Brenda Fowler Farr

Mrs. Brenda Fowler Farr, age 65,widow of John E. Farr, passed
away at home Thursday, December 30, 2010.
Mrs. Farr was born in Union County, SC August 13, 1945 , a
daughter of the late Hoyt Earl “Tom” Fowler and Lois Manus
Fowler. She retired from Conso Products after thirty-five years
of service. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist
Church where she served in various leadership positions
including President of the United Methodist Women.Mrs. Farr was
a member and Past President of the Union County DOES.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Burgess and husband Clarence
of Union; a son, J. Ellis Farr and wife Emily of Blythwood, SC;
a sister, Mary French of Union; two brothers: Jerry Dean Fowler
and wife Brenda and Wayne Fowler and wife Wanda all of Union.
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Kate and Anna Burgess and
Will, Carter and Catie Farr.
Mrs. Farr was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jo Gault.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 2, 2011
at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Steve
Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Toney L. Farr, Tommy Farr, Bobby
Farr, Brian Stalnaker, Harold Montgomery, Lee French, Terry
Greene and Kenny Horne.
Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 PM Saturday evening at
Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Rev. Arthur F. Smith, Sr, beloved husband of Edwina Pruitt
Smith of 6491 Hwy 56, Pauline, SC went home to be with the Lord
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at his home.
Rev. Smith was born in Valley Falls, SC July 23, 1938, a son
of the late Arthur L. Smith and Nellie K Batson Smith. He was a
graduate of Fruitland Bible Institute and was a member of Mt.
Lebanon Baptist Church. Rev. Smith was a retired Southern
Baptist Pastor and had served as Pastor of various churches in
North and South Carolina.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Anita
Knoepfle and husband Craig of Aiken; three sons: Frank Smith of
the home , Stevan Smith and wife Amanda and Rev. Clint Smith and
wife Wendy all of Aiken; two sisters: Ruby Bearden and Cara Nell
Smith; a brother, Bobby Joe Smith and wife Yvonne all of
Pauline; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 1,
2010 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin
Shelton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Smith’s
grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.
Visitation will be held in the church immediately following
the interment. Memorials may be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist

Mr. James Thomas “Jimmy” Hodge, Jr, age 56, husband of Sherry
Harris Hodge of 338 Joe Walker Rd., Union, SC died Tuesday,
December 28, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Hodge was born in Greenville County, SC November 1, 1954,
a son of the late James Thomas Hodge, Sr and Sarah Arnold Hodge.
He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Newberry
College. Mr. Hodge was owner and operator of Hodge Music Mart
and Hodge Enterprises. He was a member of Episcopal Church of
the Nativity; a Past President of the Union Rotary Club and
member of Union Elks Lodge # 1321.
Surviving are three children: Rebecca Schambach and husband
Dave of Charleston, Benjamin James Hodge and Emma Hodge Monroe
both of Union; a sister, Susan Hodge Dowd and husband Bill of
Union; three grandchildren: Kaylyn Hodge, Alayna Monroe and
Claire Monroe all of Union; a special nephew, Robert Chad Harris
of Union; several nieces; a nephew, and a special friend, Larry
Tyler.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 31,
2010 at Episcopal Church of the Nativity conducted by Father
Robert Long. The following honorary pallbearers are asked to sit
in a group: Gus Jeter, Joe McDonald, Johnny Gregory, Ronnie
Ingle, Larry Tyler, Chad Harris, Joseph Harris, Danny Harris and
members of Union Elks Club.

Mrs. Margaret McAbee Gaines, age 83, wife of Charles "J.D."
Gaines, of 130 Gregory Street, Union, SC died Sunday, December
26, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Gaines was born in Union County, July 8, 1927 a daughter
of the late Griffin McAbee and Ella May Harris McAbee. She was
retired from United Merchants-Union Mill and was a member of
Morningside Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Mary
Payne and husband Jonathan of Greenwood and Melinda Gaines of
the home; one son: Tim Gaines and wife Tina of Union; a
granddaughter: Natalie Cloninger of Greenwood; three grandsons:
David Payne, Matthew Carter and Rielly Gaines all of Union; a
sister: Jackie Greene of Union and two brothers: Boyd McAbee and
J.W. McAbee both of Union.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, December
28, 2010 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr.
Eddie Saxon. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. William F. Bentley, age 91, widower of Faye Garner
Bentley, went to be with the Lord Saturday, December 25, 2010.
Mr. Bentley was born in Union County March 8, 1919 a son of
the late William " Bill" and Maggie Farr Bentley. He was retired
from Lockhart Power Company and was a member of Phillipi Baptist
Church. Mr. Bentley served in the US Army during WWII.
Survivors are three daughters: Delores Farr and husband
Charles of Jonesville, Kathy Stein and husband Russell of Union,
Jean Mattews and husband Jimmy of the home; a son Terry Bentley
and wife Olean of Union; seventeen grandchildren and
twenty-seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Janie Bentley and
Betty Webber both of Union; a brother Rev. Jesse Bentley and
wife Faye of Union; and a son-in-law: Frank Vanderford of
Lockhart. Mr. Bentley was predeceased by a daughter and a son:
Brenda Vanderford and Bill Bentley; two sisters: Kathleen
Hutchings and Mit McSwain.
Services will be held Tuesday, December28, 2010 at 11:00 AM
at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. The family asks that Mr.

Mr. Rowland Farr Thomas, Jr., husband of Ramona "Ronnie"
Davis Thomas of Breaux Bridge, LA, passed away in August 27,
2010.
Mr. Thomas was born in Chester Co., December 17, 1925, a son
of the late Rowland Farr Thomas, Sr. and Alma Wade Thomas. He
was a 1949 graduate of Wofford College and was retired from
Georgia Pacific. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army
having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
A graveside memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday,
December 28, 2010 at Fishdam Cemetery conducted by Rev. Richard
Spaugh.

Miss Minnie Sly Sims, age 98, went home to be with the Lord,
Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Miss Sims was a devoted Christian,
following the teachings of Christ, and led and exemplary life to
all who knew her.
Miss Sims was born in Union, March 14, 1912 a daughter of the
late Arthur David Sims and Jessie Lawson Sims. She was a
graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Co.,
Execelsor Mill after 40 years. A charter member of Philippi
Baptist Church, Miss Sims was a former choir member, Sunday
School teacher, G.A. Leader, Vacation Bible School worker and
was a member of the Women’s Sunday School Class #4.
Surviving are one sister: Lillie Esposito and husband Greg of
Rome, NY; a sister-in-law: Janie Sims of Union; nieces and
nephews: Brenda Alexander and husband Carrol , Kathy Bobo and
husband Gene and Roger Gregory and wife Kathy all of Union,
Sandra Pachecol and husband Ted and Ron Cook and wife Betty all
of Asheville, NC, Carol Craig and husband Dave of Seattle, WA,
Anita Holcombe and husband Butch of Acworth, GA, Karen Spindler
of Rome, NY, Dianne Comeaux and husband George of Jacksonville,
FL, David Esposito and wife DaLee and Greg Esposito and wife
Becky all of Coral Springs, FL,and Judy Jett and husband Bill of
Taylors; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Miss Sims was

Mr. James Frank “Jim” Shetley, age 72, husband of Betty Jo
Dehart Shetley of 228 Shetley Rd., Union, SC went home to be
with the Lord Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Shetley was born in Union County, SC April 28, 1938, a
son of the late Elijah Shetley and Viola Sanders Shetley. He
retired from Carlisle Finishing Plant after twenty-five years of
service. Mr. Shetley was a member of Morningside Baptist Church
and served in the South Carolina National Guards for fourteen
years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Kathy
Shetley of the home and Cheryl Smith and husband Randy of Union;
two sons: Allen Shetley and wife Sherry and Robby Shetley all of
Union; three sisters:Mary Ann Duckett and husband Gene of
Cowpens, Judy Cooksey and husband Fred of Union and Sue Lovelace
of Simpsonville; a brother, Ronnie Shetley and wife Lisa of
Union; two grandsons: Brad Shetley of the home and Teddy Mull of
Union; several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. Mr. Shetley was predeceased by a
sister, Grace Reece and a brother, Cecil Shetley.

On December 20, 2010 our dear mother Dorothy Gallman O’Dell,
age eighty-one, went home to be with the Lord. She was born
Dorothy Pauline Drawdy on April 9, 1929 in Great Falls, SC. She
was the daughter of Ernest and Macie Drawdy. She was married to
the late Walker C. Gallman, Sr. After his death she was married
to the late Otis K. O’Dell. She was a member of Fairforest
Baptist Church and the Ladies III Sunday School class.
Dorothy spent her entire career as a nurse caring for others.
She graduated from Lancaster School of Nursing and worked at
Chester County Hospital, Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar
Nursing Home, and Oakmont Nursing Home.
She is survived by two daughters, Crystal Tyler, Perette
Candler and husband Joel; two sons, Walker Gallman Jr. and wife
Judy, and Rodney Gallman and wife Kathy, all of Union. She is
predeceased by her son Ricky Gallman. Dorothy is survived by
eleven grandchildren, Christy Scott, Amber Kenney, Jeremy
Gallman, Travis Tyler, T.J. Tyler, Erin Bobo, Becky Worthy,
Daniel Gallman, David Candler, Zachary Candler, and Sally
Gallman. She is also predeceased by her grandson Joshua Candler.
She also has been blessed with ten great-grandchildren; Tori,
Joshua, and Jada Tyler; Emma and Anna Scott; Madelyn and Gabriel
Tyler; Caitlin and Cara Kenney; and Norah Gallman. She is
survived by one brother, Edward Drawdy of Heath Springs and one
sister, Ester West of Chester. She is predeceased by one sister
Elsie Sibielski.
Visitation will be held at Holcombe Funeral Home on Tuesday,
December 21, 2010 from 6:30-8:30pm. Funeral services will be
conducted at Fairforest Baptist Church on Wednesday, December
22, 2010 at 3:00pm. The service will be conducted by Rev. Joey
Shetley and Rev. Allen Gregory. Burial will be in Fairforest
Baptist Church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her
grandsons. Members of the Ladies III Sunday School class are

Mr. Harold Marvin Beason, age 85, husband of Annie Belle
"Teeny" Beason of 107 Spruce St., Union, passed away Saturday,
December 18, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a
brief illness.
A son of the late Harry and Neacy Brooks Beason, he was born
April 11, 1925 in Waverly, Nebraska where he and his wife made
their home until his retirement. Mr. Beason was owner of the
Beason Construction Co. for 50 years and was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy Air Corp serving as a bombardier pilot during World
War II. He was a graduate of Waverly High School and attended
Kansas State University and the University of Hawaii. He was
member and held various offices in the VFW, the Kiwanis Club and
the Home Builders Association all in Waverly. Mr. Beason was
also a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: Steven Charles
Beason of the home; a sister: Dorothy Miller of Waverly, Neb.; a
brother: Leonard Beason of Omaha, Neb; several nieces and
nephews: Shirley Huneycutt, Jackie Darnell, Marilyn Hamblin, Pam
Burnett, Paula Turner, Billy Lindler, Dan Lindler, Beth Johnson,
Janice Lang, Riley McClintock, Beverly Combs and Bob Beason. Mr.
Beason was predeceased by a brother: Elmer Beason.

World War II Veteran
Mr. Benjamin Felder Meador, age 91, widower of Martha
Williams Meador, died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Oakmont of
Union.
Mr. Meador was born in Union, SC May 8, 1919, a son of the
late Judson Felder Meador and Leannie Carter Meador . He was a
faithful member of First Baptist Church of Union where he was a
liftime Deacon and served for over fifty years in the following
capacity: a member of the Adult Choir, Church Treasurer, teacher
and officer of the Children’s Sunday School Department.
Mr. Meador retired from Smith Williams Lumber Company and
operated a locksmith service after retirement. He was a member
of the American Legion in Union. Mr. Meador was a Veteran of the
US Army having served in World War II in France and Germany.
Surviving are three sons: Judson F. Meador and wife Dena of
Union, Benjamin W. Meador and wife Katie of Mauldin and Mark F.
Meador and wife Angie of Union; eight grandchildren: David
Meador and wife Laura of Cowpens, Jennifer Meador of Columbia,
Michael Meador of Mauldin, Joshua Meador of Union, Matthew
Meador, Stephanie Meador both of Union, Ashley Meador of Union
and Daniel Meador of Mauldin; four great-grandchildren; a
sister, Evelyn Miller and husband Rev. Dr. Fred Miller of
Columbia and several nephews. Mr. Meador was predeceased by a
sister, Miss Lucille Meador and four brothers: Melvin, Morris,
MB and Judson E. Meador.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 19,
2010 at Belulah Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mark Truitt,
Rev. Dr. Allen Raines, Rev. Dr. Fred Miller, Rev. Spencer

Valerie Conley Garner, age 82, widow of Otis C. Garner, went
home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Ellen
Sagar Nursing Home.
Mrs. Garner was born August 30, 1928, and the last surviving
child of Walter D. And Alma Conley. She was predeceased by two
sisters: Elizabeth Grant and Dorothy Wilson and two brothers,
Henry Arthur Conley and Walter M. Conley. Surviving are two
daughters: Janice Owens and husband Richard of Union and Barbara
Palmer and husband Ed also of Union. She is also survived by a
daughter-in-law, Linda Garner of Union, eight grandchildren and
fourteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons
David and Kenneth Garner formerly of Union.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening 5:00-7:00 PM
at Holcombe Funeral Home in Union, SC. Funeral services will be
conducted Friday, December 17 at 3:00 PM at Padgett’s Creek
Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be
in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jason Allen, Dean Robinson, Tony
Jones, Donavan Wells, Clay Duckett, Billy Lawson and alternate,
Stephen Stone.

Mrs. Doris Willard Whitehead, age 79, wife of Randolph H.
Whitehead, of 4476 Lockhart Hwy Union, SC went for her
reward in heaven with the Lord, Sunday, December 12, 2010 after
a sudden illness.
Mrs. Whitehead was born in Union, SC April 21, 1931, a
daughter of the late Isaac Willard and Nettie Willard. She
was a 1949 graduate of Union High School and was employed for
many years with Union Packing Company.
Mrs. Whitehead was a former music student of Mrs. Jenny
Morgan. She had served as pianist for sixty-five years at
Westside Baptist Church and was currently a member and pianist
for Crestview Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters:
Beverly W. Woods of Union and Sandra Whitehead of the home; two
sons: Charles R.Whitehead and wife Karen of Pacolet and Robert
T. Whitehead and wife Tiffany of Union; a sister, Agnes Ruth
Harris; a sister-in-law, Laverne Willard both of Union; seven
grandchildren: Holly Lawson, Harmony Greer, Ryan Whitehead, Ivy
Garner, Paige Whitehead, Jessica Woods and Jeremy Woods; eight
great-grandchildren: Will, Isacc and John David Lawson, Norah

a daughter of the late Parks Allen Moore and Mesinah Jones
Moore. She retired from United Merchants and was of the Baptist
Faith.

Union; a sister, Ruby Brewington of Clinton; grandchildren: Al

2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Shep
Bevis.Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Lee Ponder, age 77, husband of Mary Ann Weakley
Ponder of 715 Bailey Rd. Union, died at his home, Sunday,
December 12, 2010.
Mr. Ponder was born in Buffalo, SC, February 24, 1933, a son
of the late Sam Asby Ponder and Beatrice Woody Ponder. Mr.
Ponder was retired from Daniels Construction Company and
attended Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter; Donna
Champion and husband Paul of Inman, a sister; Geraldine Barber
of Union, a brother; Sam Asby Ponder of Mars Hill, NC, and a
grandson; Mason Champion. Mr. Ponder was pre-deceased by three
brothers; George Ponder, Sr., Martin Ponder, and Bruce Ponder
and a sister; Mildred Leonard.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December
14, 2010 at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev.
Kevin Dalton. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be; Paul Champion, Eddie Ponder,
Tommy Manibusan, Tim Mitchell, David Boulware and Gene Horne.
The family will receive friends following the service at the
graveside.

Mrs. Katie Lee Palmer Garner, age 86, wife of Walter M.
Garner, of 1746 Browns Creek Church Rd. went home to be with the
Lord , at her home on Saturday, December 11, 2010.
Mrs. Garner was born in Union, a daughter of the late Charlie
Palmer and Sally Gault
Palmer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate
family.
Mrs. Garner was retired from United Merchants Plant, Union.
She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church and the Grace Little
Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to her husband are 3 daughters; Brenda
G. Latham and husband Jack of Greenwood, Jennie Lemons and
husband Steve and Shirley G. Harris and husband P.D. both of
Union, a son; Paul Kent Garner and wife Doris of Union,
grandchildren; Amy Meredith and Christi Mobley of Greenwood,
David Garner, Kim Peace of Buffalo, Kevin Garner of Union, Kelly
Heatherly of Buffalo, and Scott Lemons of Union and 11 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, December
14, 2010 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Allen West
and Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery. The body will be taken to the home at 11:00 AM Tuesday
to await the our of service.
The family will receive friends after the service in the
church sanctuary.

Formerly of Lockhart
Mrs. Mildred C. "Mit" Black, age 84, widow of Carl Jeff Black
formerly of Lockhart, died Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Ellen
Sagar Nursing Home.
Mrs. Black was born in Lockhart, SC January 8, 1926, a
daughter of the late W. H. Cabaniss and Daisy Gregory Cabaniss.
She retired from Milliken & Co, Lockhart Plant and was a member
of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Sue Deal and husband Gary; a
granddaughter, Judy Turner and husband Gary; a grandson, Kenneth
"Bo" Belue; two great-grandsons: Jeffrey and Brandon Turner; a
son-in-law, Curtis Belue all of Lockhart; four sisters: Doris
Ann Gainey of Cheraw, Peggy Thomas of Gray Court, Alice Sanders
and Elaine Gaston both of Union; two brothers: Larry Gene
Cabaniss of Lockhart and Earl Cabaniss of Union; and a
sister-in-law, Inez Cabaniss of Georgia. Mrs. Black was
predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Black Belue, five brothers:
Harold, Buddy, Jack, Alvin and Flip Cabaniss and a
great-grandson, Travis Turner.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 11,
2010 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev.
Brian Bishop and Rev. Bill Vanderford. Burial will be in Mt.
Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 12:30-2:00 PM Saturday in the church
prior to the service.

Mr. Glenn A. “Snuffy” Smith, age 66, husband of Janice Bell
Smith of 133 Baber Street, Union, SC, died Monday, December 6,
2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was born in Union County, SC November 21, 1944, a
son of the late Marion Smith and Minnie Lou Sinclair Smith. He
retired from Torrington & Company and was a member of
Morningside Baptist Church. Mr.Smith was a Mason, a Shriner and
was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Crystal
Boulware of Union; a son, Todd Smith and wife Harriett all of
Union; grandchildren:Jeffery Smith and wife Katie of Charleston,
Casie Smith, Kevin Smith, Taylor Brooke Boulware and Gracie
Boulware. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a sister, Anne Smith
Austin and a brother, Donnie Smith.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, December 9,
2010 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie
Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Bruce Whisnet, Eulis Gibson,
Jonathan Bryson, Jay Ford, Dave Proctor and Josh Price. The

Mr. William Rion Boulware, age 78, husband of Thelma Tucker
Boulware of 255 Gin Circle, Buffalo, SC died Tuesday, November
30, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Mr. Boulware was born in Bogansville Township, SC August 25,
1932, a son of the late Urban Boulware and Annie Fee Boulware.
He retired from Clover Yarns in Clifton; was a former Mason of
the Buffalo Lodge; a former volunteer with the Buffalo Fire
Department; a former member of the Redmon Tribe and a CB
operator. Mr. Boulware was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist
Church where he served as an usher.
Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-eight years, are
twodaughters: Vicki Denise Boulware of the home and Vanessa
Quinn and husband Dennis of Union; a granddaughter, Hannah
Wright of Union; a brother, Grady Boulware of Buffalo and three
special pets, Sam, Thomas and Addie.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, December 3,
2010 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carroll
Caldwell and Rev.Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial
Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Stephen Stone, Rod Hewitt, Bobby
Hyatt, Joey Duncan, Chris Boulware and Kenny Proctor. The
following are asked to serve as honorary pallbeares: George
Reynolds, Ernest Crocker, John E.Duncan, Marvin McCullough and
