Mr. John Earl
Woodward, age 77, husband of Barbara Fowler Woodward of 201 Park
Drive, Jonesville, SC went home to be with the Lord, Saturday,
February 27, 2010 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Woodward
was born in Charlotte, NC, December 26, 1932, a son of the late
John Simpson Woodward and Elizabeth Johnson Woodward. He was a
member of Jonesville Church of God, the American Legion and the
Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Woodward was a retired Veteran
of the US Navy having served as a Gunner in the Cuban Crisis,
Korean Conflict and two tours in the VietnamWar.
Surviving in
addition to his wife of thirty-one years are a daughter,
Michelle Hall and husband Edward of Lancaster; three grandsons:
Zachary Hall, Casey Hall and Jake Hall; three sisters: Libby
Pyatt of Rock Hill, Mary Nivens of Clover and Ruth Hinson of
Catawba and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at
Jonesville Church of God conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd. Burial
will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
Active
pallbearers will be Chuck Fowler, Robert Burton, Neil Burton,
Danny Pyatt and Scott Hinson.
Visitation
will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the SR Holcombe

Ralph Phillips, Jr.
Local Attorney
Mr. Ralph
Phillips, Jr., a local attorney residing at 231 Heathwood Drive,
Spartanburg, SC died Friday, February 26, 2010 at Lexington
Medical Center. Mr. Phillips was born in Union, SC June 9, 1944,
a son of the late Brigadier General Ralph Phillips, Sr., and
Margaret Betenbaugh Phillips Brown, and the step-son of George
W. Brown. He is survived by his wife, Susan Young Phillips, also
a native of Union. In addition to his wife, Mr. Phillips is
survived by seven children: Marc Phillips and Matthew Phillips
both of the home, Kyle Phillips of Hickory, NC, Randee Robertson
Keisler of Columbia, Levi Robertson of Boiling Springs, Ashley
Phillips of Tampa FL and Libba Phillips of Charleston and five
grandchildren.
Mr. Phillips
was a 1962 graduate of Union High School; a 1966 graduate of
Wofford College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a 1969
graduate of University of South Carolina School of Law with a
Juris Doctor Degree. Attorney Phillips practiced law in Union,
SC from 1969 to 1993 and in Spartanburg, SC from 1993 to 2010.
Attorney Phillips is a former City Judge for the City of Union,
a former Union County Solicitor and a former 32nd
Mason and Shriner. Attorney Phillips was a member of First
Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg.
At Union High
School, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Biology
Club, Latin Club, French Club, Junior Rotarian, and elected
"Most Scholarly Male" in the senior class. He had the lead in
the Senior Play (Turn Back the Clock) and the lead in the Junior
Play (One Foot in Heaven) and acted in the Union County Little
Theater production of Solid Gold Cadillac. At Wofford College,
Mr. Phillips was Vice President of the Student Body, President
of the Student Senate, member of the college President’s
Advisory Council, member of the Blue Key Honorary Society, and
selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Colleges and
Universities.
Funeral
services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at
Eastside Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC conducted by Rev. Mike
Royal and Rev. Curt Bradburn. Interment will be in Greenlawn
Memorial Gardens.

pallbearers will be Pee Wee Green, Rick Carlisle, Benny
Brown, William Holcombe and Johnny Fallaw.
Visitation
will be held 1:00-2:15 PM Wednesday in the church prior to the
service.

Cleo Bradburn Lipsey, age 57, wife of Roger Lipsey, Sr of 322
Spencer Road, Jonesville, SC died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at
her home.
Mrs. Lipsey
was born in Union, SC December 2, 1952, a daughter of the late
Homer Bradburn and Elizabeth Pender Bradburn. She was a graduate
of Union High School and was formerly employed with Conso
Products. Mrs. Lipsey was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
She was a faithful, loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving in
addition to her husband of thirty-nine years are a daughter,
Amanda Jill Adams and husband Jason of Jonesville; a son, Roger
Lipsey, Jr of the home; two sisters: Karen Wilson Black of Union
and Shirlean Lancaster of Buffalo; a brother, Thomas Bradburn of
Jonesville and three grandson: Jason Adams, Jr, Austin Adams and
Preston Adams.
A memorial
service will be held at a later date.
The family is

Sturgill Murray, age 85 of 210 Wexford Lane, Spartanburg, SC,
widow of Rev. Fred L. Murray went home to be with the Lord
Wednesday, February 24, 2010.
Mrs. Murray
was born in Pound, VA, October 26, 1924, a daughter of the late
Gordon Sturgill and Melissa Blanton Sturgill. She was a graduate
of Limestone College and received her Masters of Education from
Winthrop College. Mrs. Murray was a retired school teacher
having taught in Union and Spartanburg County Schools. She was a
member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.
Surviving are
two daughters: Jane Murray of Greenville and Becky M. Carlos of
Union; a grandson, Joshua M. Carlos and a brother, Ulus Sturgill
both of Union.
A memorial
service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Mt.
Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West. A committal
service will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation
will be held immediately following the graveside service.

Mrs.
Wilhelmenia Bogan Adams, age 85, widow of Ralph W. Adams, died
Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at White Oak Estates in Spartanburg.
Mrs. Adams was a nine year resident of White Oak Estates and was
formerly of Harwood Heights, Union, SC.
Mrs. Adams was
born in Union County, SC, July 24, 1924, a daughter of the late
Caswell Pell Bogan and Inez Lawson Bogan. She was a graduate of
Union High School and owned and operated her own beauty shop in
Union for many years. Mrs. Adams was a member of Morningside
Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher,
former member of the WMU and was formerly active with many youth
programs. Mrs. Adams was the last surviving member of her
immediate family.
Surviving are
two sons: Gene Adams and wife Wilma of Union and Don Adams and
wife Susan of Clinton; three grandchildren: Regina Moss, Donald
Ralph Adams and Cassie Gregory and two great-grandchildren:
Blaine Moss and Dillon Caldwell. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by a
sister, Martha Sanders; two brothers: William "Bill" Bogan and
C.P. Bogan, Jr and a grandson, Kevin Adams.
A Celebration
of Life Service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, February 26, 2010
at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon and
Rev. Bill Adams. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active

graduate of Concordia College and was a former school teacher.

Louise Smith Gault, age 93, of 359 Beltline Rd., passed away

Mrs. Gault was
born in Union, SC, November 7, 1916 a daughter of the late Henry
Wilson Smith and Julia Scales Smith. She was an active member of
Fairview Baptist Church where she participated in the Sunday
School and WMU ministries as long as her heath permitted.
Mrs. Gault
retired from the United Merchants-Union Plant.
Survivors are
two sons: Bobby Gault and wife Elaine and Doyle Gault and wife
Rebecca both of Union; a sister: Ruby Morris of Union; a
daughter-in-law: Margaret Gault of Laurens; eight grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Gault was predeceased by two sons: Ray Gault and Raymond
Gault; three brothers: and two sisters.
Funeral
services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at
Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Cato. Burial
will be Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.

was born in Jonesville, SC, August 7, 1927, a son of the late
Haskell T. Rochester and Ollie Hutcherson Rochester. He retired
from Felters Company in Roebuck and was a Veteran of the US Navy
having served in World War II. Mr. Rochester was a member of
Jonesville Baptist Church which he loved and served for many
years.
Surviving in
addition to his wife of sixty-one years are two daughters: Becky
Quinn and husband Vance and Donna Gaye Rochester all of
Jonesville; two sons: Don Rochester and wife Fran of
Hendersonville, NC and Stan Rochester and wife Laurie of Moore;
two sisters: Martha Sherfield of Buffalo and Doris Erwin of
Union; seven grandchildren: Jaime Williamson, Jessica Thompson,
Joseph Greene, Daniel Rochester, Joshua Rochester, Jennifer
Calhoun and David Hall and six great-grandchildren. Mr.
Rochester was predeceased by two sisters: Frances Moore and
LaVerne Smith, a brother, Carl Rochester and a
great-granddaughter, Maggie Williamson.

Setzler Whitney, "Dot", of Union, SC, passed away peacefully on
February 18, 2010 at her home surrounded by family.
Dot was born
on October 2, 1922 in Carlisle, SC. She was predeceased by her
husband, William E. Whitney, Sr. and her parents Arthur Bowles
Setzler and Eva Gregory Setzler. She is survived by her sons
William E. Whitney, Jr., "Billy" and his wife Patsy, and James
F.B. Whitney, "Jimbo" and his wife Anita; and her seven
grandchildren, who were very dear to her, Emily Tinsley Whitney,
Louisa Stanfill Whitney, William E. Whitney, III, "Will", Eva
Marie Whitney, James F.B. Whitney, Jr., "Bo", Dorothy Ann
Frances Whitney and Julia Elizabeth Elmeta Whitney. She is also
survived by her sister, Louise Setzler Mobley; her niece, The
Honorable Dorothy Mobley Jones; and her great nephew, R. Findley
Foster Jones.
She graduated
from Union High School and Wingate College. She was a member of
Hebron Baptist Church. Previously, while living in Florence, SC,
she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She had a
strong Christian faith, and lived humbly by always putting
others first.
Services will
be held at Hebron Baptist Church in Union, SC at 2:00 PM on
Saturday, February 20, 2010.The Adult Ladies Class is asked to
sit together.

"Shorty" Ramsey, 81, of 111 Springdale Drive, Union, widower of
Annie Ruth Johnson Ramsey, went home to be with his Lord, and be
reunited with his wife of 59 years, on Sunday February 14, 2010,
at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Ramsey was
born in Spartanburg County, October 10, 1928, a son of the late
Otis B. and Ruby Steadings Ramsey. He was the owner and former
operator of Ramsey’s Garage on West Main Street, Union. Mr.
Ramsey was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, a member of
the Fellowship Sunday School Class. and was a lifetime member of
Duncan Masonic Lodge # 75.
Surviving are
three daughters: Sue R. Davis and husband Butch of Union, Joan
R. Christopher and husband Gary of Pulaski, Tennessee, and
Melissa R. Johnson and husband Ronnie of Woodruff; two sons:
Steven E. Ramsey and wife Barbara of Buffalo and Mark A. Ramsey

Dorothy Young of Union and three step-grandchildren. Mrs. Ivey
was predeceased by a son,, James Bryant Ivey; four sisters:

Mrs. Johnson
was born in Del Rio, TN, June 13, 1932 a daughter of the late
Lester and Ada Ellis Shetley. She was retired as a nurse’s
assistant from Wallace Thomson Hospital and was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in
addition to her husband are two daughters: Vicki J. Strother and
husband Bob and Sandra J. Johnson all of Greenville; three sons:
Herbert F. Johnson, Jr. and wife Jeanette of Ballwin, MO, David
K. Johnson and wife Angie of Ferrum, VA, and Glenn E. Johnson of
Union; three sisters: Stella S. Quinn and Linda S. Williams both
of Jonesville and Ruth S. Crayne of Union; a brother: Buddy
Shetley of Jonesville; four grandchildren: Susan Daulton, David
Paul Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson and Ashley Johnson; and one
great-grandson: Brody Daulton. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by a

at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.
Mr. Johnson
was born in Whitmire, SC, a son of the late William McKinley
Johnson and Lelia Robinson Johnson. He grew up in Buffalo and
later retired from Excel Hoisery Mill. Mr. Johnson was a Veteran
of the US Navy having served in World War II. He later joined
the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. Mr.
Johnson was of the Baptist Faith and was the last surviving
member of his immediate family.
Surviving in
addition to his wife are two daughters: Carmen Jeter and husband
Hugh and Donna Palmer and husband Darryl all of Union; two
grandsons: Jason Palmer and Collin Palmer and seven
great-grandchildren. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by a sister,
Mae Johnson and four brothers: Albert, John, Fred and Bobby
Johnson.
Graveside
services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 11, 2010 at
Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Mr. Darryl Palmer.

Methodist Church.

Francis Lancaster, Sr., age 83 of 1815 Mudbridge Rd.,
Jonesville, SC, died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at his home. He
was married for fifty-six years to the late Joyce L. Lancaster.
Mr. Lancaster
was born in West Springs, SC, August 21, 1926, a son of the late
Roy Lancaster and Carrie Lee Lamb Lancaster. He was a retired
truck driver with Cone Mills and was a Veteran of the US Navy
having served in World War II. Mr. Lancaster was a member of
West Springs Baptist Church, Duncan Masonic Lodge and the Hejaz
Shriners. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and
great-grandfather who will be greatly missed.

a daughter, Linda Tucker and husband Jerry of Pauline; two sons:
Charles Lancaster, Jr of the home and Frank L. Lancaster and
wife LuJuan of Jonesville; a sister, Agnes Bogan and husband

Mayfield, age 37, daughter of Phillip and Donna Elliott Mayfield
of Union, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 31,2010 at
Wallace Thomson Hospital.

born in Anthony, Kansas, August 17, 1972 and grew up in Wakita,
Oklahoma. After attending Central Oklahoma State University, she
joined her family is Union and graduated from the University of
South Carolina- Spartanburg. She was an active member of the
Episcopal Church of the Nativity as long as her health permitted
and had worked at the Inn at Merridun. Donita had been a
resident at Oakmont of Union for the past ten years.
Surviving in
addition to her parents are a sister: Misty M. Babic and husband
Dario and their son, Ivan Elliott Babic of Atlanta GA; a
brother: Phillip Dean "PD" Mayfield, II and wife Kelli of St.
Louis, MO; her paternal grandmother: Mrs. Velma Keck Mayfield of
Edmond, OK; two uncles: Kenneth G. Mayfield and wife Connie and
Jerry L. Mayfield and wife Kayle; and cousins and their
families. Donita was predeceased by her maternal grandparents,
