     The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home at 310 W. South Street was the result of a dream of S. Ratchford Holcombe and his wife, Irene Fowler Holcombe. Their wish was to have a home-operated, home-owned funeral home in which all of Union County could be proud.
     The couple saw their dream come true on May 1, 1949 with opening of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home at the Holcombe's residence on South Mountain Street.
On Thanksgiving Day in 1953 the business was moved to its present location on W. South Street.
     The Holcombes wanted a people-oriented business. Their desire was to provide service second to none. They wanted to add to and improve their facilities so that it would always be the most modern, well equipped available and this has been done over the years. A chapel with a seating capacity of 300 was added in 1965 and another addition was completed in 1986. The Jonesville Chapel was added in 1992 to serve the people of the Jonesville community.
     Although the founders and two of their children, August Fowler Holcombe and Gladys Holcombe Genoble, are now deceased, their goals are still held by succeeding generations.

The Holcombe family continues to look for ways to better serve the people of Union County and to be worthy of the confidence and trust placed in them.
