JONESVILLE — Johnnie Sue Smith Gowan, 85, widow of Stewart Gowan Jr.,
formerly of 570 Rogerstown Road, Jonesville, died Thursday, June 30, 2005
at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Gowan was born Feb. 2, 1920, a daughter of the late Jesse and
Rosie Sentel Smith. She was a member of Jonesville Church of God and the
Women Auxiliary of the church. Mrs. Gowan was the last surviving member of
her immediate family.
Surviving are:two daughters, Kay G. Vaughan and husband Buddy of
Jonesville and Julie Hatfield of Midland, Texas; a son, Bobby Gowan of
Conyers, Ga.; a daughter-inlaw, Margaret Gowan of Clover; six
grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren and a special friend, Winnie Gore of Jonesville.
Mrs. Gown was predeceased by a son, Jesse Gowan.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jonesville
Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Roger Byrd.
The family will receive friends at the Jonesville Church of God
reception hall immediately following the graveside services.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Kay and Buddy Vaughan, 570
Rogerstown Road, Jonesville, S.C. 29353.

Wanda Faye Rollins McGuire, 52, of 872 Shaw Road, Woodruff, died
Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at her home after a brief illness.
Mrs. McGuire was born in Newberry, Oct. 13, 1952, a daughter of the
late Reuben B. and Flossie Lee Kendrick Rollins. She was formerly employed
with the Medway Residential Care Center in Moore and attended the Poplar
Spring Full Gospel Church.
Surviving are three sisters, Elsie Sutcliffe of Lexington, Diane
Edwards of Gray Court and Connie Simmons of Woodruff; a brother, Tommy
Rollins of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. McGuire was
predeceased by two brothers and a twin sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe
Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Todd Black. Burial will be in Union
Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Stanley Robinson, Daniel Robinson, Jody
Simmons, Jason Yarborough, D.J. Collier and Brad Simmons.
Visitation will be held tonight from 7 until 9 at the S.R. Holcombe
Funeral Home.

Mr. Gibson was born August 17, 1955, son of the late Ernest Elijah and Ester Craft Gibson. He was an electrician with J & B Electrical and was formerly employed with Daniel Construction Company. He had attended Union High School.
Surviving are a son, Michael Wayne Gibson of Union; two brothers, Bennie Gibson and Johnnie Gibson, both of Union; a niece, Amanda Pettit and husband Michael of Jonesville; along with a number of other nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Audrey Sherbert of Union.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at Ottaray Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9:00 p.m. Monday at the Holcombe Funeral Home.

World War II veteran
Gene David Glass Sr., 77, of Union, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at
Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Glass was born in Union on Sept. 28, 1927, the son of the late
Francis Satterfield and Lenora Howell Glass.
He graduated Union High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy
having served in World War II. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist
Church of Union, a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, The
American Legion and The Elks Club. Mr. Glass was retired from Cone Mills
in Carlisle and a former postal worker after retirement.
Surviving are children Julie Glass Rutledge and husband John of
Spartanburg, Gene “Buster” Glass and wife Renee of Seneca, Linda Stone
Warshell and husband Bill of Oklahoma City, Okla., Laura Burgess Willard
and husband Steve of Union, Joey Burgess and wife Lynn of Manning, Jimmy
Burgess of Louisville, Ky, Becky Burgess Williams of Union; a special
friend Mary Del Eubanks of Union; 11 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Bethel United
Methodist Church. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active
pallbearers will be David Glass, Casey Glass, Steve Willard, Joey Burgess,
Ralph Edwards and David Turner. Honorary pallbearers are members of the
Senior Adult Sunday School Class, Al Plemmons and Mark Glass.

Mary Ruth Garner Vanderford, 96, of 100 Churchill St., Union,
widow of Guy W. Vanderford, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Wallace Thomson
Hospital after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Vanderford was born in Cherokee County, June 12, 1909, a daughter
of the late Ellison R. and Belle Vaughan Garner. She was active in her
community and church where her advice and counsel was sought by her peers.
Mrs. Vanderford was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church
where she taught Sunday School for many years; helped organize the first
youth group; and formed the UMW where she served as president for many
years. She also helped organize many fund raisers and special projects to
assist in the building programs of the church. She was a member of the
Marian Conard Sunday School Class. To honor her faithfulness, the church
named a class, the Mary Ruth Vanderford Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Vanderford is survived by two daughters, Laura V. Farr and
husband Ned of Union and their family, Donald Farr and wife Pam, along
with their children Matthew Guy Farr and Lauren F. Daggetts and husband
Brett and their son, Aiden, all of Lakeland, Fla..; daughter, Dolly V.
Mahaffey of Spartanburg and her two daughters, Lindy M. Kloskey and her
three children, Erin K. Couchell and husband Chris, Mark Kloskey, all of
Spartanburg and Richard Kloskey and wife Kalen of Columbia and Rose Mary
M. Still and husband Bow and their three children, Bowman, Lawson and
Jack, all of Spartanburg. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mary H.
Garner of Union and Leda Mace Garner of Florence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Chapel
United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Donald Farr, Richard Kloskey, Mark Kloskey,
Bow Still, Bowman Still and Lawson Still.

Vernon W. Boulware, 80, of 251 Gin Circle, Buffalo, died Sunday,
July 10, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. He was the widower of Eva Nell
Boulware.
Mr. Boulware was born Feb. 14, 1925, the son of the late Belton and
Lula Fee Boulware.
Mr. Boulware was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was
a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Buffalo.
Surviving are two daughters, Irene B. Abrams and Lorene B. Vinson,
both of Buffalo; a grandson, James Eric Vinson of Buffalo; two
great-grandchildren, Kayla Vinson and Kaitlyn Vinson, both of Union; a
brother, Thomas Boulware and wife Frances of Buffalo; a sister, Nellie
Lawson of Buffalo; a number of nieces and nephews and a special pet,
Jellybean. Mr. Boulware was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Boulware.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at

NEWBERRY — Susie Irene Nabors Cool, 87, widow of Daniel J. Cool, of
the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry, died Saturday, July 9, 2005.
Mrs. Cool was born in Buffalo, Nov. 3, 1917, a daughter of the late Brooks
Patton Nabors and Sally Lois Gregory Nabors. She was retired form United
Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a member of the Enoree Baptist Church in
Newberry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Cool is survived by a number of cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., today, July 11, 2005, at
Putman Baptist Church Cemetery. conducted by Mr. Steven Ragan.

Ralph Harold Young, 79, of 148 Sardis School House Road, Union died
Sunday, July 10, 2005, at the home of his niece, Brenda Mobley.
Mr. Young was born in Union, April 24, 1926, the son of the late Inez
Young Blankenship. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church for
over 64 years. Mr. Young retired from United Merchants, Union Mill.
Mr. Young is survived by two nieces, Brenda Mobley and Dale Horne and
her husband John, all of Union; one great-nephew, Jason Mobley, two
great-nieces, Penney Deaton and Wendy Horne, all of Union; one
half-sister, Ann Elliott and two half-brothers, Jimmy Blankenship and
Junior Blankenship of Granite Falls, N.C. Mr. Young was predeceased by his
beloved sister, Dorothy Young.
Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. today, July 11, at Sardis
United Methodist Church Cemetery by Dr. Anita Bozardt, the Rev. Randy
Smith and Mr. Mobley’s cousins, Bill Gallman and his wife Jan.
Active pallbearers will be Terry Young, Jason Mobley, Douglas Horne,
Jerry McDonald, Bill Gallman and John Horne.

JONESVILLE — Godfrey Bee Fowler Jr., 66, of 1348 Gaffney Highway,
Jonesville, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 in Spartanburg Regional Medical
Center.
Mr. Fowler was born Oct. 31, 1938, a son of Mary Ruth Hayes Clark of
Fayetteville, N.C., and the late Godfrey Bee Fowler Sr. He was a retired
respiratory Therapist having worked at hospitals in Yadkinville and
Kernsville in North Carolina. Mr. Fowler was a veteran of the U.S. Air
Force and was of the Baptist faith. Since moving to Jonesville he attended
Jonesville United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two sisters, Patricia Ann
Fowler Lawrence and Peggy Clark Trogdon, both of Fayetteville; a niece,
Melanie Pate Norton of Wilmington; a nephew, Kevin Russell Pate of
Fayetteville; two cousins, States Rights Aycock of Wickliffe, Ky., and
Nancy Aycock Garner of Jonesville; and a number of other cousins and close
friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Clarence E. Horne, 88, widower of Mable Taylor Horne, of 302
Spring St., Union, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at his home after a
sudden illness.
Mr. Horne was born in Union July 11, 1917, a son of the late George T.
Horne and Ester Sinclair Horne Henderson. He was retired from Joanna Mills
and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II. Mr.
Horne attended Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church.
Mr. Horne is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are a daughter, Erlene Sparks Gore of Union; two sons,
Harold E. Horne and Donnie S. Horne and wife, Kim, all of Union; 10
grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mr. Horne was
predeceased by a daughter, Frances Spencer Pittman.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe
Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial
Gardens.

JONESVILLE — Larry Darrell Knox, 51, husband of Donna Roberts Knox
of 325 Fairview St., Jonesville, died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at
Spartanburg Restorative Care after an extended illness.
Mr. Knox was born Dec., 17, 1953, the son of the late Wilbur and Annie
Boulware Knox. Mr. Knox was previously employed as a foreman with Kohler
Co. and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of various Bass Fishing
Clubs in South Carolina.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Chasity K. Hames and
husband Robbie of Jonesville; a son, Larry Wayne Knox of the home; a
sister, Vivian Brewington of Buffalo; and three grandchildren, Austin Cole
Tinsdale, Colin Reese Hames and Bethany Cadance Hames. Mr. Knox was
predeceased by a brother, Harold Knox.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2005 at
Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial
will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joseph William Shick, 6-year-old son of Thomas Michael and Cynthia
Dawn Fowler Shick of 144 Greenway Drive, Union, died Friday, July 15,
2005, from injuries sustained in an a u t o m o b i l e accident.
Joseph was born in Spar tanburg on March 7, 1999. He was a rising
firstgrader at Foster Park Elementary School, where he had completed
kindergarten. He attended Mon-Aetna Baptist Church with his family.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Jeffrey Thomas
Shick and Jonathan Ryan Shick, both of the home; a sister, Caroline
Elizabeth Shick of the home; his maternal grandparents, Don and Rickie
Fowler of Union; his paternal grandparents, Roland and Joan Shick of
Columbia; three aunts and uncles, Kathy and Charles Price of Florence;
Lisa and Keith Wilson of Florida and Robert and Dianne Shick of Columbia.
Joseph was predeceased by a sister, Amara Dawn Shick; and an uncle,
Jeffrey Roland Shick.

Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and the Rev. Robert Emory. Burial

Kingsmore of Travelers Rest and Kenny Kingsmore of Bel Air, Md.

great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Knox was born in Union, June 10, 1926, a daughter of the late
Clarence and Virginia Bailey Alexander. She was retired from
Lockheed-Martin in Orlando, Fla., and was a member of Crestview Baptist
Church, formerly Westside Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Terri Knox Haire of Union; two sons, Donald
Ray Knox of Charleston and Ralph Michael Knox of Columbia; a sister, Betty
Jean Garrett of DeBerry, Fla.; a brother, Charles Alexander of
Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Billy Haire, Todd Haire, Amy

Former Welcome Grill owner
Mae Fore Sherbert, 87, widow of Thomas D. Sherbert Sr., died
Thursday, July 21, 2005 in Oakmont Nursing Home in Greenville.
Mrs. Sherbert and her husband owned and operated the Welcome Grill
Restaurant in Union for 32 years. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist
Church and a devoted citizen of Union.

Imogene Robbs Plexico, 47, wife of Wayne Plexico, of 1207 West
Main St., Union, died Friday, July 22, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional
Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Plexico was born in Laurens, July 25, 1957, a daughter of the
late William Thomas and Lessie Kiker Robbs.
Surviving are two daughters, Kim Plexico of the home and Regina Aste
and husband Joey of Spartanburg; four sisters, Sherry Wix of Enoree, Ann
Robbs of Gray Court, Tammie Robbs of Spartanburg and Debra Scott of Union;
and one grandson, Jacob Aste of Spartanburg.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe
Funeral Chapel by Rev. Ken Owens. Burial will be in Union Memorial
Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Gene Revis, Max Revis, Eric Edgins, Michael
Littlejohn, Jeff Satterfield and Anthony Kiker.

Myrtle Howell Wilson, 84, widow of James
Clifford “J.C.” Wilson of 200 Hicks St., Union, died at Wallace Thomson
Hospital Sunday, July 24, 2005 after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Wilson was born in Union on July 31, 1920, a daughter of the late
William “Babe” Howell and Emma Lavonia Gregory Howell. She was a member of
Westside Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda W. Simmons of Enoree and Teresa Ann
Hicks of Pacolet; three sons, Jimmy Wilson and wife Frances and Michael
Wilson and wife Connie, all of Union and Eddie Wayne Wilson and wife
Barbara of Jonesville; a sonin-law and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Karen
Wilson Black of Union and Ella Mae Wilson; two sisters, Wilhelmina
“Willie” Kirby and Evelyn Knox, both of Union; a brother, James Howell and
wife Joan of Buffalo; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by a son, Donald Bruce
Wilson and a grandson, Donald Lloyd Wilson and two brothers and three
sisters.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rosemont
Cemetery by the Rev. Neil Keisler and the Rev. Jerry Lawson.
Active pallbearers will be Bruce Wayne Wilson, Jeff Wilson, Ricky
Wilson, Mike Bledsoe, Paul Hughes and J.T. Gregory.

Brenda Varner West, 59, wife of Bobby M. West of 1506 Mt. Lebanon
Road, Pauline, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional
Medical Center after years of declining health.
Mrs. West was born in Union, Feb. 18, 1946, a daughter of the late
Ernest and Bessie Trammell Varner. She was formerly employed with Arrow
Automotive and was a former beautician. Mrs. West was a member of Mt.
Lebanon Baptist Church where she volunteered with the Home-Bound Program.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sisters, Janice West of
Union and Virginia Cousino of North Augusta; a granddaughter, Brenda Ann
“Bre” Spry. Mrs. West was predeceased by a daughter, Sherry West Spry and
a grandson, Jeffrey Paul Spry.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist
Church by the Rev. Dr. Randy Pettit. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday night from 6:30 until 8:30 at the Holcombe
Funeral Home.

JONESVILLE — Mrs. Doris Elaine Fowler
Burton, 65, wife of Robert C. Burton of 215 Park Drive, Jonesville, died
Thursday, July 28, 2005 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Burton was born May 1, 1940, a daughter of Carlisle Fowler of
Jonesville and the late Doris Brown Fowler Hyatt. She was retired from
Union County Schools after 22 years and was a member of Gilead Baptist
Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter, Amy B.
Eaves of Jonesville; a son, Robert Neil Burton and wife Tina of Cowpens; a
sister and brother, Barbara Woodward and Elliott Fowler, both of
Jonesville; four grandchildren, Luke Millwood, Kayce Campbell, Karlee
Campbell and Cliff Campbell.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005 at
Gilead Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lawton Neely. Burial will be
in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Etha Leora Bevis Greer, 94, widow of John Monroe Greer, of
Oakmont Nursing Center, died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Wallace Thomson
Hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Greer was born Oct. 26, 1910 in Jonesville, a daughter of the
late Joseph Crawford Bevis and Sally Sanders Bevis. Mrs. Greer was a
homemaker and was formerly employed for over 10 years at Spartanburg
General Hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Union.
Surviving are two daughters, Sally Greer Hart of West Springs and
Marjorie Greer Marcello of Glenn Springs; a sister, Jessie B. Clary of
Columbia; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Greer was
predeceased by two sons, John B. Greer and Franklin D. Greer.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lower
Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Joe Wilson Smith.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church
fellowship hall.

Beulah Scales Ochiltree, 81, widow of Albert Woodrow Ochiltree Sr.,
formerly of 311 Blassengame St., Union, died at the Aiken Regional Medical
Center Wednesday, July 27, 2005 after a long illness.
Mrs. Ochiltree was born in Kelton Jan. 21, 1924, a daughter of the
late Lonnie C. and Nettie Palmer Scales. She was retired from F&K Textiles
and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: a daughter, Brenda Thompson of Union; a son, Albert
Ochiltree Jr. and wife Brenda of Union; a sister, Lenora Childress of
Mauldin; a brother, Guy Scales of Jonesville; eight grandchildren, Cheryl
Inman, Rhonda Lee, David Roach, Chris Roach, Lesa Nichols, Jill Crocker,
Kristi Moss and Dawn Spencer and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ochiltree was predeceased by a daughter, Rovella Ann Ochiltree.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005 at Bethlehem
United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Sweat and the Rev.
Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Scruggs of 2302 Union Highway, Gaffney, died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at
her home after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Scruggs was born in Union July 6, 1927, a daughter of the late
Wylie Drayton Smith and Lois West Smith. She was a homemaker and was of
the Methodist faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Vicki Queen and husband Dale of Shelby, NC;
a son, George Scruggs and wife Brenda of Gaffney; two sisters and a
brother, Mary Lee Allen, Alien Smith and William Smith, all of Union; six
grandchildren, Anita Jones, Drayton Scruggs, Kimberly Martin, Joshua
Brown, Michael Brown, Wendy Vippermin; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs.
Scruggs was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Juanita Scruggs,
Clara Wright and Jim Ray Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005 at Kirby
Memorial Baptist Church in Gaffney conducted by the Rev. Richard Lancaster
and the Rev. Mike Proctor. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery in Union.
