Harold Austin Sr.
Retired textile employee

David Harold Austin Sr., 56, of Elkton, Md., died at his home Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 at 12:40 a.m.

Mr. Austin was born in Union on July 14, 1948, a son of the late Norman Estes and Zena Mae Austin Estes. He was a Baptist and was a retired textile employee.

Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Christianson and Marie Austin, both of Princeton, W. Va.; a son, David H. Austin Jr. of Princeton, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Hunter Christianson, Christian Austin, Chloe Christianson and Brittany Austin; a special friend, Sue Moore of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Diane Beard of Union; and two brothers, his twin, Danny Caroll Austin and Robert Austin Sr., both of Union. Mr. Austin was predeceased by a sister, Delitha Austin Britt.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Harold Coleman and Ken Palmer. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Robert Austin, 184 Lover’s Lane Road, Union Tuesday night from 7 until 9. Alvin Meadows
Buffalo native

ROCK HILL — Alvin Gray Meadows, 62, husband of Janice Gregory Meadows, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service was held Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist by the Rev. Kevin Gorry.

A native of Buffalo, Mr. Meadows was a son of Louise Meadows of Buffalo and the late Dolman Meadows. He was employed by Camposites One of Rock Hill and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he was involved in the Boy Scout program, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and held many other offices.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Graylin Meadows of Rock Hill, a daughter, Kristy Meadows of Boiling Springs, a brother, Arlen Meadows of Union; three sisters, Nancy Culberson of Buffalo, Nell Henderson of Blairs, Va., and Sue Jones of St. Augustine, Fla; and two grandchildren.

Harold B. Murphy
Retired from Union Police Department

Harold B. Murphy, 92, widower of Reba Sanders Murphy, formerly of 109 Pine St., died at Oakmont Nursing Home Saturday evening, July 31, 2004.

Mr. Murphy was born in the Cross Keys Community of Union, June 10, 1912, a son of the late David Furman Murphy and Selma Bailey Murphy. He was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, but attended Union First Baptist Church for as long as his health allowed.

Mr. Murphy retired from the City of Union Police Department and was a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association. He later worked at Union Hardware and as a cook for the Union County Detention Center. He enjoyed cooking, especially cakes and pies to give to family and friends. He and Mrs. Murphy always enjoyed sharing and helping others.

Mr. Murphy is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law and brother-inlaw, Juanita and Marshall Comer of Union; and a special friend, Mrs. Jimmie Ruth Gibson of Lockhart. He was predeceased by brothers Roy F. Murphy, R. Dewey Murphy and sister, Virginia M. Davis.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joe Smith and the Rev. Robert Emory. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family will be at their respective homes.

LOCKHART — Tracey Shannon Mathis, 27, of 210 N. First St., fiancee of Holly Gibson Porter of the home, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 in Lockhart.

Born April 19, 1977 in G a s t o n County, N.C., he was the son of Scott Patterson and Joy Arlene Davidson Patterson of Clover. He was employed by M&M Construction.

Surviving in addition to his parents and fiancee are a daughter, Savannah Elaine Mathis and step-daughter, Summer Raye Porter, both of the home; two sons, Cody Burt Mathis and Christian Blake Mathis of Clover; a brother, Michael Scott Patterson of Clover, a sister, Carrie Michelle Miskell of Clover; and Danielle Robles of Clover, mother of sons.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at M L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Clover conducted by the Rev. Earl Combs. The family will receive friends for one hour following the service.

Mary Flowers McAlpine
Former day school director

CLINTON — Mary Flowers McAlpine, Clinton, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Kerr-Johnson Healthcare Unit, Presbyterian Home in Clinton, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McAlpine was born in Darlington County Nov. 20, 1918, a daughter of the late Harry Allen Flowers and Grace Anderson Flowers. She was a 1939 graduate of Winthrop College and taught Home Economics at New Prospect and Lockhart High Schools. After moving to Spartanburg, she was a teacher and later director of Westminister Presbyterian Day School at Westminister Presbyterian Church where she received numerous awards for program excellence. She enjoyed bridge, gardening, and her mountain retreat in Hendersonville, N.C. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. McAlpine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton.

Surviving are her husband, Laurens Elliott McAlpine of Clinton; two sons and daughters-in-law; Dr. Laurie Allen McAlpine and wife Pamela of Murrells Inlet, and John Matheson McAlpine and wife Mary of Odum, Ga.; four grandchildren, Katherine Elliott McAlpine of Charlotte, Anna Carter McAlpine of Arlington, Va., John Matheson McAlpine and Mary Elizabeth McAlpine, both of Odum, Ga.; and a sister; Frances Flowers Koontz of Cheraw. Mrs. McAlpine was predeceased by two brothers: Laurie Allen Flowers and Hazel Woods Flowers.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Union, conducted by Dr. Dennis Tedder and Dr. B.E. Pettit. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the graveside service.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Frampton Hall of the Presbyterian Home, Clinton. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Julia "Judy" Tippett Lawson, 68, of 1300 S. Pinckney St., Union, wife of Ralph H. "Cotton" Lawson, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at 1:06 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Lawson was born in New Bern, N.C., on April 10, 1936, a daughter of the late Junior and Julia Tippett. She was a graduate of Winthrop College School of Nursing and was a retired registered nurse at Hope Hospital in Lockhart. Mrs. Lawson was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Vonda Tsarnas of Providence, R.I., and Rhonda McAddams of Greenville; a son, Thomas Aavik of Sumter; two step-sons, Edward Lawson and Ralph Lawson Jr., both of Union; three sisters, Jan Hodge of Delta, Ala., Linda Jewell of Freemont, N.C., and Reatha Lord of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, John Aavik.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rod Smith, the Rev. Mickey Fisher and the Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

BUFFALO — Minnie Faye S. Turner, 79, wife of Roy Dean Turner of 506 Sugar Creek Road, Buffalo, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at 4:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Turner was born in Union on June 23, 1925, a daughter of the late James Boyd Smith and Fannie Harrison Smith. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Turner was an avid quilter for many years and was a hummingbird enthusiast. She was a loving and giving woman and a faithful servant of God. She exemplified her Christian faith by her love and friendship for her family and friends. Mrs. Turner was formerly employed with United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and Monarch Mill and was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Thelma "Julie" Robinson of Fair Play; a brother, Roy Lee Smith of Buffalo; nine nieces, five nephews, 13 greatnephews and 10 great-nieces. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, Hollis Smith, James Smith, Bessie Kate Crisp, Kathleen Hopkins and Mozelle Messer.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Randolph Pettit Jr. and the Rev. Melvin Shelton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be J.W. Crisp, Leon Smith, Bill Carry, Frank Vinson, George Faucett and Joey Crisp.

Members of the Adult Sunday School Class of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

BUFFALO — Linda Ford Lawson, 55, wife of J. Bruce Lawson of 362 Putman Road, Buffalo, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at 12:59 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union County on March 17, 1949, a daughter of Lena O’Shields Ford of Union and the late Hubert Wallace Ford. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired certified teacher’s assistant for Spartanburg School District 7. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are three sons and daughters-inlaw, Brian Lawson and Ivy McCall, Brady Lawson and wife Erica and the Rev. Chad Lawson and wife Stacy, all of Buffalo; a sister and brotherin-law, Elaine F. and Harold Gregory of Buffalo; a granddaughter, Blayke Lawson of the home and two nephews, Heath Gregory and wife Chapel and Neil Gregory, all of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman, the Rev. Robert Emory and the Rev. Chad Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Christine J. Gregory
Former school teacher

Christine Jeter Gregory, 97, widow of Frederick Page Gregory, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Bon Secours St. F r a n c i s H o s p i t a l , Charleston.

Born in the old L.B. Jeter Sr. home in Santuc on Dec. 28,1906, Mrs. Gregory was a daughter of the late Little Berry and Adeline Crosby Jeter. She was a graduate of Limestone College.

She taught school for 38 and a half years, beginning her career in Pickens County in 1929. For 35 years she taught in Santuc, first at the old Santuc School, and later at Carlsan Elementary School. When she retired, she was a second grade teacher at Carlsan School in Santuc. Mrs. Gregory for many years was a member of Salem Baptist Church, serving as church treasurer and church clerk as well as teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In 1968, she joined Cane Creek Presbyterian Church with her husband and was an active member there.

Mrs. Gregory was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a son, Malcolm Chapin Gregory of Santuc; a daughter and son-in-law, Paige Gregory Rumph and Robert Raymond Rumph of Charleston; two step-granddaughters, Wendi Lynn Rumph of Lake Ridge, Va., and Betsy Rumph Cullen and her husband, Matthew Howard Cullen of Portland, Oregon; two step-great-granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters, Joseph Hamilton Jeter, John Mobley Jeter, Little Berry Jeter Jr., Robert Parham Jeter, Frank Hamilton Jeter, Malcolm Crosby Jeter, Ethel Jeter O’Keeffe, Mildred Jeter Strock, Kate Jeter Strother, Flournoy Belle Jeter, Louise J. Jeter and Nancy Jeter Bishop.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cane Creek Presbyterian Church in Santuc conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Gant. Burial will be in the Jeter Cemetery following the church service.

Eugene Hance
World War II veteran

Elmer Eugene Hance, 82, husband of Claira Nelle G. Hance of 302 Glendale Road, Union, died at his home Friday, Aug. 6, 2004.

Mr. Hance was born in Stark City, Mo., Jan. 25, 1922, a son of the late James Lawrence and Mabel Geller Hance. He was a graduate of Furman College with a BS degree in chemistry and was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Marine Corps 3 rd Marine Air Wing.

He was retired from Milliken & Co. as quality control director for the knitted outwear division and had served in several managerial positions at Kingstree Manufacturing, Pendleton Finishing, Excelsior and Midway plants. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where he had served as a Sunday School teacher and member of the personnel and finance committees.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Hole in One Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Elmer Eugene Hance Jr. and James Marion Hance, both of Union and Neill Moss Hance and wife Deborah of Greenville; a daughter, Claira H. Cassell and husband, Samuel of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Teagan Hance, Ian Hance, Nolan Hance Ashley James Cassell, Jessica Cassell, Pace Davis Cassell and Tanner Cassell; three brothers, Eison Hance of Lancaster, Texas, Lawrence Hance of Spring, Texas and George Hance of Joplin, Mo.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory.

The family will receive friends in the vestibule of the church from 2 until 2:45 Sunday.

Retired from Lockhart Mill

Mable Wortman Parker, 93, widow of Robert Amos Parker, formerly of 8435 Lockhart Highway, Sharon, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at 12 noon in White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Parker was born in Rutherford County, N. C. on November 3, 1910, a daughter of the late Calvin and Nancy Crane Wortman. She was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant and attended the Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Eunice P. Parkins of Chester, Betty P. Spencer and Cornelia P. Ertzberger, both of York; two sons, Jimmy Parker of York and Robert Lee Parker of Union; five sisters, Mildred Rochester of Greer, Mavis Eledge of Lyman, Pat Peterson of Martin’s Ferry, Ohio; Enthie Robinson of Greer and Iree Wilson; 17 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Parker was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Parker; two sons, Frank Parker and Oscar Parker, and two grandsons, Bobby and Steven Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ned Worstall and Mr. Oscar Saddler. Burial will be in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherokee County.

LOCKHART — Brenda G. Vanderford, 61, wife of Frank "Cricket" Vanderford of 135 S. Main St., Lockhart, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at 3:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Vanderford was born in Union on Feb. 9, 1943, a daughter of W. F. Bentley of Union and the late Faye Garner Bentley. She was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church. Mrs. Vanderford was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Conso Products.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter, Cindy Cromer of Lockhart; a son and daughterin-law, Gary and Beth Cromer of Lockhart; a special son-inlaw, Mike Vanderford of Lockhart; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Cromer of Lockhart; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Charles Farr of Jonesville, Kathy and Russell Steen and Joan and Jimmy Matthews, all of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Olean Bentley of Union; a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Vanderford was predeceased by a brother, Bill Bentley.

Marion Montjoy Moncavage, 88, of 219 Belvue Drive, Union, widow of Johnny Moncavage, died at her residence Wednesday, Aug., 11, 2004 at 5:45 p.m.

Mrs. Moncavage was born in Laurens on March 13, 1916, a daughter of the late Ernest Eugene Montjoy and Octavia Burch Montjoy. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Before her retirement she was a caterer.

Surviving are three sisters, Mildred McNinch of Rock Hill, Frances Elsmore of Whitmire and Jane Callaway of Wetumpka, Ala.; three brothers, James Montjoy of Anderson, Claude Montjoy of Joanna and Edgar Montjoy of Laurens and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 until 8 p.m.
Services and burial will be at a later date in Hackettstown, N.J.

Norma Jackson O’Shields, 71, of 257 Vernon Foster Road, Union, widow of Gus Smith O’Shields, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after an extended illness.

Mrs. O’Shields was born in Bradford, Ala., on June 25, 1933, a daughter of the late Fred Lee Jackson and Dixie Cole Jackson. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church. Mrs. O’Shields was a graduate of Corner High School and was a retired bookkeeper.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Tavia O. Rigdon and her husband, Steve, of Moore; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold Jackson and his wife, Ann, of Dora, Ala. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BUFFALO — Lois Lawson Linderman, 93, of 1044 Main St., Buffalo, widow of Benjamin Joley Linderman, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004.

A native of Union County, she was born Feb. 28, 1911, a daughter of the late Samuel Andrew Lawson and Minnie O’Shields Lawson. She was a life long member of Putman Baptist Church. Mrs. Linderman was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include a niece, Mildred "Mimi" Keys of Spartanburg; two nephews, Dennis and Glenn Sherbert of Buffalo; a great-niece, Paulette Cathcart of Spartanburg and a number of great-great-nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Paul Malpass of Union. Mrs. Linderman was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude L. Sherbert and Lillie L. Garner.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Putman Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman.

Visitation will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9.

LOCKHART — Naomi Lee Hampton Williams, 63, wife of Ronald Williams of 329 North 1 st St., Lockhart, died at her residence Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at 2 p.m., after an extended illness.

Mrs. Williams was born in Chester on Jan. 8, 1941, a daughter of the late James Garvin Hampton and Nora Elizabeth Hampton Hampton. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Chester and was retired from Springs Industries, Katherine Plant.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Jewel Kay Haeussler of Manchester, Mich.; Diane Turner of Lockhart and Amanda Allison of Union; four sisters, Iris H. Bostic of Greenville, Miss., Hazel H.
Wilkes and Melba H. Thomas, both of Chester, and Norma Jean Morrison of Richburg; a brother, Wayne Hampton of Rocksville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Carson Allison, Bittany Turner, Ashley Turner, Matthew Talbert and Adriene Talbert. Mrs. Williams was predeceased by two brothers, Don Hampton and Gordan Hampton, and a grandson, Robbie Gearhart.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Pastor John Porter. Burial will be in the Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

James H. DuPree
World War II veteran

JONESVILLE — James H. DuPree, 76, husband of Dorothy Burgess DuPree of 304 Harris St., Jonesville, went to Heaven to be with his Lord on the 13 th day of August, 2004 after a brief illness.

Mr. DuPree was born in Pacolet Mills on Sept. 21, 1927, a son of the late Herbert DuPree and Ila Worthy DuPree. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U S. Army. He attended New Life Baptist Church where he was a member of the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He was retired from Kohler Company in Spartanburg and had formerly worked at the recycling center on Highway 18.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons and daughters-in-law, James R. "Rick" DuPree and wife Sherry of Union, Brent W. DuPree and wife Gayle of Georgia and Chris E. DuPree and wife Diane of Spartanburg; a brother, Fred W. DuPree of Norfolk, Va.; eight grandchildren, Lance C. DuPree, Anitra D. DuPree, Robin DuPree, Courtney DuPree, Kieran DuPree, Ashlee DuPree, Justin Chmielewski and Connor Chmielewski; and a greatgrandchild, Carson DuPree. Mr. DuPree was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Bailey and Louis Robertson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Life Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clarence Adkins and the Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Glenn Blum, Bruce Blum, Stanley Burgess, Bobby Bailey, Brian Robertson, Greg Murray and Brett Murray.

Doris P. Gallagher
Retired teacher

JONESVILLE — Doris Parks Gallagher, 83, widow of Nelson W. Gallagher, of 310 Parks Farm Road, Jonesville, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Gallagher was born in Jonesville, June 26, 1921, a daughter of the late Monroe L. and Annie Lybrand Parks. She was a graduate of Winthrop University with majors in home economics, chemistry and general science receiving her bachelor of science degree. She continued her graduate studies at the University of Tennessee, the University of South Carolina and Winthrop University. Mrs. Gallagher taught school for over 35 years in North and South Carolina. While teaching home economics in Jonesville she had charge of organizing the first Christmas parade and Jonesville High homecoming. She also served as F.H.A. advisor and had charge of the homemakers organization.

Mrs. Gallagher served for many yeas as the historian for the United Daughters of the Confederacy and helped organize the Jonesville American Legion Auxiliary and served as president for many years. Mrs. Gallagher was an active member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church where she taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class and served as historian, trustee and on other committees of the church.

Mrs. Gallagher is survived by many cousins in the Lybrand and Parks families, also by two chosen daughters, Mrs. Irene Moss and Mrs. Majorie Robinson, both of Jonesville.

Graveside services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Larry Hyder, the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Scott Gilmer.

The family received friends following the graveside service at the Jonesville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Dana G. Rogers
World War II veteran

BUFFALO — Dana G. Rogers, 92, husband of Martha Carter Rogers of 392 Riley Road, Buffalo, died Friday, Aug.13, 2004, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Rogers was born in Lee Valley, Tenn., on Dec. 3, 1911, a son of the late Henry and Maggie Neely and was raised in Blackwater, Va., prior to moving to Union.

Mr. Rogers was a clerk and butcher at DuPree’s Gregory for over 30 years and was retired from Torrington Co Tyger River Plant. He was veteran of World War II, hav ing served in the U.S. Army He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was a life time Mason.

Mr. Rogers was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: two daughters and sons-inlaw, Sue R. and Evans Wilson of Union and Dana Kaye and Jimmy Adams of Spartanburg; a son and daughter-in-law. David B. and June Rogers of Gaffney; five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren; and special friends Ronald and Agnes Inabinett of Buffalo.

Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Tim Anderson and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Active pallbearers were James Inabinett, Gerald Inabinett, Mark Adams, Kent Wells, Stanley Wells and Stanley Elliott.

The family received friends Sunday night at the funeral home.

Theodore Maddox Plexico Jr., 38, of 620 Lover’s Lane Road, Union, husband of Amy Henderson Plexico, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at 9:27 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Plexico was born in Union on Jan. 27, 1966, a son of Edna Plexico of Union and the late Theodore Plexico Sr. He was a member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle and was formerly employed with United Merchants, Buffalo Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Nicholas Plexico of the home; two sisters, Wendy Saulter of Union and Joyce Burgess of Jacksonville, Fla. Mr. Plexico was predeceased by a sister, Molly Grossl.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Fannon was born in Jonesville on Aug. 2, 1921, a daughter of the late John Boyd Smith Sr. and Nanny Tweed Smith. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant. Mrs. Fannon was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Pat Baldwin of Duncan, a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Fannon and wife Mary Jane Fannon of Forest City, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jeff Fannon, Susan Goings, Stephanie Antkowiak and Kenny Baldwin; two greatgrandchildren, a brother, Ervin (Red) Smith of Jonesville; a sister, Dorothy Smith Williams of Jonesville; a step-sister, Daisy Jordan of Florida; and a special friend, Joe Hawkins of Landrum. Mrs. Fannon was predeceased by three brothers, Wallace Smith, Herbert (Pete) Smith and John Boyd Smith Jr., and a sister, Carrie Smith Bogan.

Mrs. Crawford was born in Dover, Delaware on April 9, 1960, a daughter of the late Fred W. Mull Sr. and Beverly Kay Calvert Mull. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Davis and her husband Rodney Davis of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Crawford and wife Samantha and Philip Crawford and wife Brooke, all of Union; four sisters, Vicky M. Mrs. Cranford was born in Carlisle on Dec. 14, 1943, a daughter of the late Vernon Vester Abee and Irene Decker Abee. She was of the Presbyterian Faith but attended Unity United Methodist Church where she was active in Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Cranford was employed with Sonoco Products Co.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony Scott Cranford and wife Rhonda of Spartanburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Cranford Grady and husband Scott of Lexington; four grandchildren, Erinn Katelyn Grady, Benjamin Dallas Grady, Sarah Catherine Cranford and Hannah Elizabeth Cranford; two brothers, Vernon V. Abee Jr. and William Franklin (Billy) Abee, both of Union; and a sister, Ellen A. Duckett of Whitmire. Mrs. Cranford was predeceased by a brother, Robert Lee Abee.

Mrs. Dantzler was born in Union on Aug. 10, 1955, a daughter of Douglas and Dorethea Walton White of Carlisle. She was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with American Services at National Starch and Chemical. Mrs. Dantzler was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a son, Lance E. Vaughan of the home; a sister, Debra White of Carlisle; a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas R. White Jr. and wife Pam of Carlisle; and a niece, Micki Sumner of Carlisle. Mrs. Dantzler was predeceased by a daughter, Leslie M. Vaughan.

Bessie Blakely Keisler, 101, formerly of 102 4 th St., Union, widow of John Norman Keisler Sr., died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at 12:54 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Keisler was born in Union on March 19, 1903, a daughter of the late James Stewart Blakely and Victoria Burgess Blakely. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken & Co., Ottaray Plant after 58 years service.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys K. Vaughan, Lillie K. Gregory and husband William, Claudette K. Knox and husband Bobby, and Vera K. Henderson and husband Harold, all of Union; a granddaughter reared in the home, Cynthia K. Valencia and husband Bob of Dallas, Texas; two sons and a daughter-inlaw, James L. Keisler and Warren V. (Vel Dee) Keisler and wife Nancy, all of Union; grandchildren, Pamela V. Gilstrap, Rebecca V. Long, Mary Lee Buttner, Beverly L. Tucker, William Michael Hawkins, Charlotte K. Adams, Joseph D. Henderson, Linda K. Wages, Terresa K. Cook, Beth K. Comer and Norma K. Gagle; 23 greatgrandchildren and 8 greatgreat-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Bobby Blakely and wife Joyce of Columbia. Mrs. Keisler was predeceased by two daughters and a son, Annie Belle Keisler, Mary K. Laws and John Norman Keisler Jr.

Justice C. Price, 79, of 308 Catawba St., Union, husband of Louise Smith Price, died at his residence Sunday, Aug.22, 2004 at 6:15 a.m. after an extended illness.

Mr. Price was born in Newberry on June 11, 1925, a son of the late George R. and Ruth Harmon Price. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict having serviced in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was retired from Milliken & Co. after 43 years service. Mr. Price was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Becky Wade of Union and Michele Price Clardy of Greenville; a sister, Tina Nichols of Newnan, Ga., three grandchildren, Jay Hembree of Columbia, David Hembree of Union and Rhett Price of Greenville and a great-granddaughter, Kate Price of Greenville.

Cynthia Marlow Groves, 49, wife of Jackie Groves of 237 Old Buncombe Road, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Groves was born in Inman on May 6, 1955, a daughter of Glen Marlow and Mary Pope Marlow of Inman. She was a graduate of Dorman High School, Cecil’s Business College and attended Clemson University, She was employed with Springs Industries in Lyman and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a son, Chris Marlow of Boiling Springs; two stepdaughters, Angie Smith and Jackie Price, both of Union; two brothers, Phillip Marlow and David Marlow, both of Inman; and six grandchildren.

Sallie Elizabeth Treadway Varner, 92, of 309 West Hillcrest Ave., Union, widow of Lewis Joseph Varner, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at 4 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Varner was born in Madison County, N.C., on June 1, 1912, a daughter of the late John Wesley Treadway and Nancy Jane Rector Treadway. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Varner was a retired beautician.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy V. Hagan Berry of the home; two grandchildren, Lynn Hagan Meador and husband Gene of Summerville and John David Hagan III and wife Judy of Union; four great-grandchildren, Sandra Birchfield, Joseph C. Harris, Willie Harris and Beth Bishop; seven great-greatgrandchildren, a sister, Joy Rue Sumner of Newberry; and a number of nieces and nephews and special friends, Pat Littlejohn, Donna Sweezy and Sue Haney. Mrs. Varner was predeceased by seven brothers and a sister, Doyle Treadway, George W. (Lit) Treadway, Curt Treadway, Clyde Treadway, Andy Treadway, Ray Treadway, W.T. (Tee) Treadway and Betty Cummings.
