Louise Fowler Bogan

WEST SPRINGS, SC--Mrs. Louise Fowler Bogan, 77, widow of Harry Bogan, of 4321 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, died Friday, December 3, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Bogan was born in Spartanburg County, August 4, 1927, a daughter of the late Luther Fowler and Eunice Cothran Fowler Heatherly. She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church, and the Mary Sue Keiths Sunday School Class. Mrs. Bogan was a homemaker and a beloved Mother.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Brewington; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randall and Kathy Bogan, and Marshall Bogan and April Hines, all of the West Springs Community; three sisters, Frances Sherfield, Joyces Moss, and Shirley Heatherly, all of Buffalo; three grandchildren, Lisa Bogan, Lance Brewington, and Mark Brewington; two step-grandchildren, Daniel Crocker, and Stacie Bobo; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Brewington, Rachel Brewington, Riley Brewington, and Dixie Crocker. Mrs. Bogan was predeceased by an infant sister, Doris Fowler.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 6, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at Bogansville United Methodist Church, by Rev. Gary Peterson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., and will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Monday to await the hour of service.

Nelson Eddy Fowler, Sr.

UNION, SC-- Mr. Nelson Eddy Fowler, Sr., 57, husband of Windy Webb Fowler of 576 River Road, Union, died at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Fowler was born in Union, June 23, 1947, a son of the late Leroy and Sudie Montgomery Fowler. He was employed with Lil Cricket Stores for fifteen years in maintenance. Mr. Fowler was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Nelson Eddy Fowler, Jr. of Union, and Monte S. Fowler who is currently serving with the U. S. Army in Iraq; two sisters, Gail Guinn of Union, and Gaye F. Broome of Boiling Springs; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Monday night from 7-8:30 p.m.

Nancy Wylie Duckett

UNION, SC-- Mrs. Nancy Wylie Duckett, 59, wife of Halon McArthur Duckett of 2028 Jonesville Highway, Union, died at her home on Sunday, December 5, 2004, after a long illness.

Mrs. Duckett was born in Gaffney, May 14, 1945, a daughter of Gene and Gladys Searcy Wiley of Union. Mrs. Duckett was a graduate of Union High School and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two daughters, June Carol Davis and husband Larry, and Julie Duckett Horne and friend David Ritz, all of Union; two sons, Danny Halon Duckett of the home, and Richard Keith Duckett and wife Claudia of Gaffney; one sister, Linda Blanton of Gaffney; one brother, Tom Boyle of Union; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Warren Jones and Rev. Clarence Crocker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Monday night from 7-9:00 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 2028 Jonesville Highway, Union.

James Earl Howell

UNION, SC-- Mr. James Earl Howell, 84, husband of Nanalene Fowler Howell, formerly of 201 Highland Drive, Union, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Howell was born in Kelton, July 20, 1920, a son of the late Willie and Bridgie McCullough Howell. He was retired from Milliken Company Excelsior Plant and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Howell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22 of Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Jerry Howell of Orlando, FL; two sisters, Sara Ann Farr of Jonesville and Callie Clark of Union; eight brothers, William Howell of Union, Howard Howell of Spartanburg, Ned Howell of Sylvania, GA, Charles Howell of Charleston, Billy Howell of Laurens, Russell Howell of San Antonio, TX, Eugene Howell and Donald Hope Howell, both of Union; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a brother, Ervin Lee Howell.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Roger Plemmons. Burial will be at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Monday night from 7-9:00 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Mabel E. Lawson

BUFFALO, SC-- Mrs. Mabel Evans Lawson, 84, of 1307 Linersville Road, Buffalo, widow of Martin E. Lawson, died Monday, December 6, 2004, at 4:40 a.m. in Wallace-Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Buffalo on June 2, 1920, a daughter of the late Lawrence Evans and Annie Willard Evans. She was a graduate of Union High School and was former owner and operator of the Nixie Beauty Shop. Mrs. Lawson was a life-long member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Margaret E. West of Decatur, GA, and Barbara E. Land of Glenn Springs. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a sister and four brothers, Drucie E. Robinson, William Evans, Robert Charles Evans, Ray E. Evans and Billy R. Evans.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Buffalo Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 1307 Linersville Road, Buffalo, and will receive friends at Buffalo Baptist Church, Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

JONESVILLE — Horace Franklin “Jake” Horne Jr., 75, widower of Betty Carol Foster Horne of 1103 S. Jonesville Highway, Jonesville, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at 2:35 p.m. after a period of declining health.

Mr. Horne was born in Jonesville on Aug. 23, 1929, a son of the late Horace Franklin Horne and Nanny Fowler Horne and stepson of the late Bertha Mabry Horne. He was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and was formerly employed with the Pepsi Cola Co.

Surviving are a son, Horace Eugene “Gene” Horne and wife Cindy of Jonesville; three sisters, Katherine (Cat) Proctor, Frances (Sis) Fowler and Evelyn (Cotton) Fowler, all of Jonesville; two grandchildren, Robbie Eugene Horne and wife Melanie of Jonesville and Tonya Horne Smith and husband Scott of Lockhart; two great-grandchildren, Emily Horne of Jonesville and Tayla Smith of Lockhart; two nephews, Gary Evans Proctor and Tommy Demsey Fowler, both of Jonesville. Mr. Horne was predeceased by a sister and brother, Lena Horne Lee and Carl Eugene Horne.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Lawton Neeley, the Rev. Jerry Lawson, the Rev. Alan Quarles, Chaplain Jim Hager and Stan Eaves.

The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery Saturday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Tom Ponder, Paul Boyd, Frank Roberts, Roger Wynn, John Young, Bobby Atkins and Justin Addis.

The family is at the home of his son, Gene and Cindy Horne, 1101 S. Jonesville Highway, Jonesville and will receive friends at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel Friday night from 7 until 9.

Donnie Ray Babb

Donnie Ray Nance Babb, 41, of 116 Francis Ave., Union, widower of Patricia Denise Nance, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Providence Hospital N.E. in Columbia after a sudden illness.

Mr. Babb was born in Union on May 14, 1963, a son of Nellie Lunsford Babb Cartee of Union and the late Jesse Thomas Babb. He was a Baptist and was employed with Union Tree Service.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his stepfather, Willie Cartee of Union; two sisters, Debbie Davis and husband Randy of Buffalo and Tonya Sulton and husband Rufus of Union; three stepdaughters, Altie Howell, Marie Ciprano and Audrey Glover, all of Union; a stepson, Jim Paul Watts of Union; six grandchildren, Audrey Gail Howell, Leah Howell, Destiny Ciprano, Denise Ciprano, Sarah Glover, all of Union and Kasey Watts of Pennsylvania; a special niece, Sandy Babb of Union; and special friends, Brenda Keith and Patricia Dallassandro of Union. Mr. Babb was predeceased by a brother, Ricky Babb and a nephew, Chris Babb.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Ottaray Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Bobby Crocker and the Rev. Frank Cartee. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Rovella O. Loyd

UNION, SCMrs. Rovella Ann Ochiltree (Rose) Loyd, 62, of 1216 Old Buncombe Road, Union, passed away at her residence, at 11:13 p.m., on December 9, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Loyd was born in Union on November 30, 1942, a daughter of Beaulah Scales Ochiltree of Union and the late Woodrow (Woody) Ochiltree. She attended Union High School and was an active member of the basketball team throughout high school. She attended college for five years in Orange County, California. She was an Author and Writer of personalized childrens books. She was a member of Padgetts Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving other than her mother, are the love of her life and soul mate, Ronnie S. Loyd of the home; four children, Cheryl Ann Inman of Union, David Roach of Union, Chris Roach and wife Tammy of Union, and Rhonda Lee of the home; a sister, Brenda O. Thompson of Union; a brother, Albert Ochiltree and wife Brenda of Union; two step-daughters, Kim Hamilton and Kelly Bell Loyd of Mobile, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Brandi Northern of Union, Jason Erwin and wife Jessica of Greenville, Josh and Jennifer Inman of Union, Laura R. Meador and Casey Roach of Union, Cassie R. Fox and Karrie A. Roach of Union; two step-grandchildren, Tyler and Ashley Hamilton of Mobile, Alabama; eight great-grandchildren, Davin Keasler, BeKah Fox, Christian, Logan and Chloe Meador, Kiya LeKay Hughes, all of Union, Jalynn and Tristin Erwin of Greenville; and one great-grandchild will be born in April 2005. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and special friends, Rubie Zorrero of Hemet, California, Debbie Estes of Lake Wylie, Mike Palmer of Mobile, Alabama, Wanda Carter of Texas and Donna McElrath of Cross Anchor.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, at Padgetts Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Joe Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Fox, Kevin Owenby, Alex Harkins, Lester Duncan, David Meador, and Heath Haney.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Holcombe Funeral Home. The body will be placed in church at 1:00 p.m. Monday, to await the hour of service.

Katie Callicutt
Retired from J.P. Stevens


Katie R. Callicutt, 85, widow of Abner Callicutt, of 3985 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, died Sunday Dec. 19, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a lingering Illness.

Mrs. Callicutt was born in the Dutchman community of Spartanburg County, Dec. 25, 1917, a daughter of the late John and Florence Smith Riddle. She was retired from JP. Stevens Jonesville Plant and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Spartanburg Co. Mrs. Callicutt was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law Lillie Mae and James D. Brewington of Jonesville; a grandson and his wife, Scott and Angie Brewington of Union; and three great-grandchildren, Melanie Brewington, Madison Brewington, and Matthew Brewington. Mrs. Callicutt was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church in Pauline by the Rev. Johnny Burgess, the Rev. James Gaunce and the Rev. Jeff Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Callicutt’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Oliver M. Charles
World War II veteran


Oliver Manning Charles, 89, of 101 Crawford St., Union, widower of Verne Glass Charles, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at 2 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mr. Charles was born in Union June 7, 1915 in a log cabin on the site of the present Union High School, a son of the late James S. Charles and Pearl Wood Charles. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Allan Charles of Union; a daughter, Jo Carolyn Anzalone of Pittsburgh, Pa., a brother, Stuart Charles of Jacksonville, Fla., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date at the family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Gussie Mae Farr Comer
Kelton native


Gussie Mae Farr Comer, 93, widow of Emerson Comer, formerly of Kelton, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Oakmont Nursing Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Comer was born in Kelton, April 28, 1911, a daughter of the late Richard C. and Ethel Pauline Inman Farr. She was retired from Milliken & Co., Excelsior Plant, and was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy C. and L.D. Gallman of North Charleston and Mary F. and Ellic Prince of Whitmire; two sisters, Virginia Farr of Union and Grace Lown of Lexington; seven grandchildren and a number of great and great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Comer was predeceased by a daughter, Natalie C. Youngblood; a sister, Norma Alman; and a brother, Archie Farr.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Larry Lancaster, Richie Lancaster, Phillip Gallman, Terry Youngblood, Carroll Thompson and Wayne Comer.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 3:15 p.m. today to form the honorary escort, John Earl Alman, Buddy Alman, Bo Ham, Hubert Farr, Harold Holcombe, Hope Holcombe, Mike Vaughan, Danny Comer and Toney Farr.

James Bobby Gault, 68, husband of Shirley Morris Gault, 225 Deepwater Road, Union, died at his residence Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at 8:15 p.m.

Mr. Gault was born in Union July 17, 1936, a son of the late Lloyd Thomas Gault and Mary Louise Bailey Gault. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. Mr. Gault was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Cone Mills-Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Bonnie Louise Gault of the home; a sister, Rebecca G. Bishop and husband Mont of Union; a brother-in-law, Joe W. Estes of Lexington; three grandchildren, Christine H. Cribbs and husband John of Spartanburg, Brandi A. Vinson and William “Gene” Vinson III both of the home; two great-grandchildren, Brianna Alexis Cribbs of Spartanburg and Nicholas O’Ryan Vinson of the home. Mr. Gault was predeceased by a granddaughter, Gena Nichole Vinson and a sister, Mable G. Estes.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Abraham Lincoln Moss, 79, husband of Dorris Thomas Moss of 219 Westview Drive, Union, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Moss was born in Valley Falls, Dec. 18, 1925, a son of the late Thomas Bates Moss and Gaston Defoix Cook Moss. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. He was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. Mr. Moss was a member of the Rutledge Lodge 351 where he had served as a past master. He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies, a Shriner and an Ambassador of the Hejaz Shrine Temple.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Ray and Becky Moss of Union, a sister, Mary Denney of Seneca; three grandchildren, Tracy Owens and husband Jeff of Buffalo, Tami Gilbert and husband David of Rogersville, Tenn., and Tiffany Smith and husband David of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren, Brennen, Zachery and Spencer Owens, Whitney, Austin, Devin and Erin Gilbert and Savannah Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tommy Bailey and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Helen G. Vanderford
Retired from Conso Products


Helen Gamble Vanderford, 80, widow of Coley B. Vanderford, formerly of 207 Wilbur St., Union, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a priod of declining health.

Mrs. Vanderford was born in Hickory Grove, June 2, 1924, a daughter of the late James R. and Wilma Harrill Gamble. She was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School and was retired from Conso Products. Mrs. Vanderfod was a member of the former Westside Baptit Church, now Cretview Baptist Church, and was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother. To many she was known as “Nana.” She loved to cook, sew and do for others. Mrs. Vanderford was the last survivor of 10 children in her immediate famiy.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne V. and John Glenn of Union; a son, and daughter-in-law Johnny R. and Dianne Vanderford of Santuc; an adopted daughter, Sherry Summer Chapman of Joneville; four grandchildren, John H. and wife April Glenn, Richard Vanderford, Shane Vanderford and Wendie Paige; and two greatgrandchildren, Ryan Riddle and Jordan Riddle.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens.

Acive pallbearers were Alex Chapman, Tim Pridemore, Benny Gibson Ronnie Cooper, Monte Stanford and Gerone Brooks.

Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Gibson and Roger Sumner.

The family received friends Sunday night at the funeral home.

Marvin Hope “Shorty” Montgomery, 78, of 3521 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at 9:45 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Montgomery was born in Cherokee County on Aug. 18, 1926, a son of the late W.F. Montgomery and Mary Burns Montgomery. He was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and was retired from Conso Products. Mr. Montgomery was a Methodist.

Surviving are a sister, Nettie Faye M. Bentley and her husband, the Rev. Jesse Bentley of Union; two brothers, Clifton Montgomery and wife Reba of Union and William Keaton Montgomery of Spartanburg and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Montgomery was predeceased by three sisters and a brother, Nora Montgomery, Ruby Goforth, Sudie M. Fowler and D.B. Montgomery.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles, Mr. Bob Humphries and the Rev. Brad Goodale.
Mr. Montgomery’s nephews are asked to assemble at the cemetery Friday at 1:45 p.m. to serve as honorary escorts.

Former Union merchant


Stella Cooper Allen, 96, of 300 Bird St., Union, widow of Ernest “Dick” Allen, died at her residence Saturday morning, Dec. 25, 2004.

Mrs. Allen was born in Wise County, Va., on May 12, 1908, a daughter of the late James William Cooper and Susan Caldwell Cooper. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Seiver Junior High Schools in Kingsport Tenn., and was a former textile employee and former owner and operator with her husband of the original Duncan Road Produce. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Allen Wilson of the home; four grandchildren, Brandon Hagan, reared in the home, Phillip Hagan and wife Kim and Beth Foster, all of Union and Laura Graham and husband Fred of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; five greatgrandchildren, Shane Adams, Sarah Foster, Jordan Hagan, Ashley Hagan, and Hagan Graham; and a great-grandson, Jonathan Adams. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by a brother, Cecil A. Cooper Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Tuesday at Unity United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Clayton Price and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at the Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery in Spartanburg County.

Active pallbearers will be Phillip Hagan, Brandon Hagan, Jordan Hagan, Fred Graham, Michael Foster and Shane Adams.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Lee Brock, Jan Hagan, Clark Canupp, Michael Cohen, Jimmy Allen, Paul Allen Jr., David Cohen, Mickey Gist, Leroy Harris Sr., and James Lane. Katherine Hollifield Conard, 63, of 707 Old Ferry Road, Union, widow of Edward “Pose” Conard, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at 6:20 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Conard was born in Asheville, N.C., on Oct. 15, 1941, a daughter of the late Oscar and Eloise Wallen Hollifield. She was a graduate of Chester High School and was formerly employed with Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a daughter, Roxanne Lee and husband Randy of Union; a son, Joey Conard and wife Debra of Lockhart; two sisters, Irma H. Chitwood and Juanita H. Abercrombie, both of Chester; two brothers, Johnnie Hollifield of Fort Lawn and Tommy Hollifield of Chester; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Abercrombie, Jamie Abercrombie, Ken Dallas, Jimmy Strait, David Gentry and Robbie Gentry.

JONESVILLE — Frank D. Lipsey, 96, of 301 Forest St., Jonesville, widower of Bernice P. Lipsey, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at 7:40 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Lipsey was born in Cherokee County on Feb. 28, 1908, a son of the late Bunyan and Enzie Harris Lipsey. He was a member of the Jonesville Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, former director of the Brotherhood and director of Training Union. Mr. Lipsey was retired from J.P. Stevens Co., Jonesville Plant, and was also a retired municipal judge for the Town of Jonesville.

Surviving are two daughters: Jane Addis and Sherry Gregory, both of Jonesville; a sister, Violet Ivey of Union; and 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Lipsey was predeceased by two daughters, and a son, Dorothy Moss, Frances Holt and Harold (Bud) Lipsey, three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Dr. Jim Spencer. Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

SPARTANBURG — Lenna White Meek, 96, of 225 Mohawk Drive, Spartanburg, widow of Franklin B. Meek, died Sunday, December 26, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Meek was born in Jonesville on April 1, 1908, a daughter of the late Daniel C. White and Vienna Willard White. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was retired from Lourie’s Clothing Store in Columbia.

Surviving are two sisters, Vera W. Gault of Spartanburg and Irene W. Gregory of Union; a brother, Robert A. White of Spartanburg and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm. Tuesday at New Hope United Methodist Church conduced by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CHESTER — Martha Childers Nichols, 55, of 99 Deaver St., Chester, widow of Grady Henry Nichols, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at 4:23 a.m. in Piedmont Medial Center in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Nichols was born in Union County on Aug. 31, 1949, a daughter of Vernon L. Childers of Union and the late Helen McSwain Childers. She was a former member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father are two sisters, Melinda Ann Childers of Union and Mary C. Lanier of Lockhart; a brother, Tommy Childers of Union; three nephews and two special care-givers, Doris Beam and Patti Stewart.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Lockhart Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Frank Cantrell.

Paul Henry Smith, 76, of 627 Sardis Road, Union, widower of Rachel Sanders Smith, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at 3:14 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Union on July 6, 1928, a son of the late Henry Belton Smith and Pauline Bailey Smith. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, Union Masonic Lodge #75 and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. Mr. Smith was retired from Cone Mills Finishing Plant.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda S. Parks and husband Jackie of Lockhart and Brenda K. Gallo and friend Gene Crocker of Union; a son, Hayward Smith and wife Sandy of Sumter; two brothers, Elliott “Freight Train” Smith and Jimmy Smith, both of Union; three grandchildren, Jay Parks, Eric Parker and Haley Williams; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Joe Brown and the Rev. Angelia Price.

John Wesley Gregory Jr., 78, of 3067 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, husband of Lorena Hyder Gregory, died at his residence Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at 5:15 p.m. after an extended illness.

Mr. Gregory was born in Adamsburg on April 20, 1926, a son of the late John Wesley Gregory Sr., and Eura Burgess Gregory. He was a graduate of Clemson University Class of 1951 and had been a member of IPTAY for 42 years. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and a member of the Spartanburg Cattleman’s Association and was formerly employed with Carolina Eastern. Mr. Gregory was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to is wife are two daughters, Glynda Karabinos and husband Jerry of Spartanburg and Betsy Stone and husband Bobby of Belmont, N.C.; a son, John Wesley Gregory III and wife Linda of Simpsonville, six grandchildren, Meredith Karabinos and Allison Karabinos, both of Spartanburg, Charlie Stone of Belmont, and Lindsay Gregory, Abigale Gregory and Wesley Gregory, all of Simpsonville. Mr. Gregory was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret G. Boyd and Nancy G. Hinson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Glen Rusher. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
