Fannie L. Garrett

UNION, SC-- Mrs. Fannie Lawson Garrett, 98, widow of Thomas Tommy O. Garrett, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at 5:55 a.m. in the Laurens County Hospital.

Mrs. Garrett was born in Fountain Inn, SC, on August 28, 1906, a daughter of the late A. J. Lawson and Leona Knight Lawson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union and was retired from Abney Mills in Woodruff.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean G. Duncan and husband Harold of Union, Nellie G. Wright and husband Parke of Pageland; two sisters, Martha L. Smart of Shelby, NC, and Virginia L. Smith of Earls, NC; a brother, Russell Lawson of Shelby, NC; six grandchildren; Jimmy Duncan, Robin Duncan, Tiffany D. Black, Joseph Peace, Jackie Peace and Melvina McFarland; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Woodruff.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 7-9:00 p.m. Wednesday night and will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Tiffany D. Black, 313 Westminister Circle, Union.

Mary B. Mann
Retired from Red Cross

Mary Baker Mann, widow of Stephen W. Mann, died Thursday, Sept. 2, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mr. and Mrs. Mann were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg.

Born Oct. 11, 1911, in the Cross Keys section of Union County, Mrs. Mann worked with the Red Cross throughout the Northeast until her retirement in 1974 at which time she traveled extensively and was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Mann is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John D. and Pat Long of Union; four grandchildren, Lou Ann Parris of Spartanburg, Mary Jane Leahy of Columbia, Billy Long of Union and Steve Long of Columbia; and two great-grandchildren, Tee Farr of Union and Neely Parris of Spartanburg.

Per their request, a private family memorial service will be held for Mrs. Mann and her late husband, Stephen W. Mann, who predeceased her in March 2003. The Rev. Gideon M. Long Jr. will officiate.

LOCKHART — Azilee Brawley Askew, 97, widow of James Vernon Askew Jr., formerly of Lockhart, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Askew was born in the Kelton Community of Union County on Sept. 9, 1906, a daughter of the late Robert A. Brawley Sr. and Mary Garner Brawley. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School. Mrs. Askew retired as a postal clerk at the Lockhart Post Office after 25 yeas service where she assisted her husband who served as postmaster. She was a member of the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church where she formerly served as pianist, Sunday School Teacher and president of the Women of the church.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law. Joseph Vernon Askew and wife Betty of Aiken; a grandson, Michael Askew and wife Sharon of Aiken; two greatgrandchildren, Shayne Askew and wife Kim of Aiken and Heather Askew McFadden and husband Michael of Charlotte and two great-great grandchildren, Colin McFadden and Meredith McFadden.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be David Wilburn, Dr. William Lampley, Jack Webber, Drexell Belue, Richard Denton and Roger Thomason.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.

Virginia W. Keisler
Retired social worker

Virginia Wilson Keisler, 85, wife of Wallace Keisler Jr. of 803 E. Main St., died at her residence Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004 at 12:37 a.m. after an extended illness.

Mrs. Keisler was born in Asheville, N.C., on Feb. 14, 1919, a daughter of the late Oscar and Maude Cowan Wilson. She was a graduate of Emma High School in Asheville and Dell Mar School in Detroit, Mich. She was a retired social worker with Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Keisler was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Woods and wife Terri of Gaffney; a grandson, Jayden Woods of Gaffney; two sisters, Vernelle W. Brown of Asheville and Lois W. Wild of Brooklyn, Mich.; a brother, Joe Wilson of Hillsdale, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Sara K. Berry of Union; a special niece, Ginger Berry and her son Kailen McWhorter of Union and several other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Keisler was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor W. Johnson.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8.

Leonard A. Lowe Sr.
Retired construction firm owner

CARLISLE — Leonard Alexander Lowe Sr.,. 81, husband of Dania Z. Lowe of 2815 Southwest 8 th Drive, Gainesville, Fla., died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lowe was born in Miami, Fla., April 6, 1923, a son of the late Harry Swift and Minnie Ann Lawrence Lowe. He was a retired co-owner of Lowe’s Construction Co. in Miami and Lowe’s Marina of Key Largo, Fla. Mr. Lowe was a contributing founder of the Key Largo Ambulance Service and a longtime member of various unions. He was a superb hunter and fisherman traveling in Central America, Canada and across the United States. He proudly financed the education of two physicians within his family and contributed to many personal charities. Mr. Lowe attended St. Augustine Catholic Church in Union.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife area daughter, Roberta L. Vick of Raleigh, N. C.; a son, Leonard A. Lowe Jr. MD, of Gainseville, Fla.; a granddaughter, Deanne Ashley Vick and one grandson, M. Grey Vick, both of Raleigh, N C.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that the memorials be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Robert C. Seymore
World War II veteran

WHITMIRE — Robert Coley Seymore, 77, of the C.M. Tucker Nursing Center, Columbia, formerly of 1127 Reed Ave., Whitmire, widower of Annie Wilbanks Seymore, died at 9:35 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Mr. Seymore was born in Whitmire on Jan. 24, 1927, a son of the late Robert Lee Seymore and Bernice Willard Seymore. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with J.P. Stevens Co., Whitmire Plant. Mr. Seymore was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving are a daughter, Anne S. McMurry of Orangeburg; a son, Jimmie Seymore of Whitmire; two sisters, Rose S. Hise of Buffalo and Hattie Mae S. Moss of Columbia; three grandchildren, Jennifer Turner, Jeffery McMurry and David Seymore and two great-grandchildren, Riley and Mason Turner. Mr. Seymore was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Seymore.

Graveside services were held Monday at the Whitmire Cemetery conducted by the Rev. L.E. Goude and the Rev. Chris Johnson.

The family received friends at the graveside and was at the home of Sandra and Clyde Seymore Jr. , 917 Lovers Lane Road, Union.

Judy Elaine Hamm Cabaniss, 57, wife of Allen Cabaniss of 4455 Lockhart Highway, Union, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at 10:35 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Cabaniss was born in Lockhart on Oct. 25, 1946, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Jessie Love Hamm. She was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with John Wolfe Industries. Mrs. Cabaniss was a member of the Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Tonya Marie Foster and husband Richard of Spartanburg; a grandson, Hunter Hayes Foster of Spartanburg; four sisters, Myrtle H. Adams, Ruth H. Dabbs and Margie H. Canupp, all of Lockhart and Brenda H. Tiller of Chester; a brother, Lewis Hamm of Lockhart; and her mother-in-law, Lillian L. Cabaniss of Lockhart. Mrs. Cabaniss was predeceased by two brothers, Leon Hamm and Grady Hamm.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Union Church of God conducted by the Rev. Alton Stone and the Rev. Russell Miles. Burial will be in the New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery in Chester County.

Active pallbearers will be Donnie Adams, Eddie Canupp, Darryl Sumner, Dennis Dabbs, Gary Hamm, Randy Hamm and Ricky Hamm.

Mr. Kenneth Ray "Kenny" Gibson, 47, of 8082 Lockhart Highway, Sharon, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Gibson was born in Sharon, Oct. 29, 1956, a son of Donald Gibson of Lockhart and the late Carolyn Mahan Gibson. He was formerly employed with Premier Color in Union and was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Kay Ervin Gibson of Charlotte; two daughters, Holly G. Porter of Lockhart and Brooke Orr of Chester; one sister, Sandra G. Austin of Sharon; one brother, Tim and his wife Rhonda Gibson of Smyrna; and four grandchildren, Summer Raye Porter, Savannah Elaine Mathis, Thomas Maverick Orr and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Orr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Alan Quarles and Mr. Stan Eaves. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery.

Marie Lula Bradley Blackwell, 84, widow of Boyce Hartwell Blackwell, formerly of Sardis Road, Union, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 at 4:45 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Blackwell was born in Spartanburg on Feb. 22, 1920, a daughter of the late William Baxter and Milbrey Harmon Bradley. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and the John L. Greer Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Blackwell was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy B. Martin. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sybil B. Russell and husband Phil of Charleston; two sons and daughters-in-law, C.B. Blackwell and wife Kathy and Bruce Blackwell and wife Diane, all of Union; a son-inlaw, Franklin Martin of Union; two sisters, Effie Whiteman of Decatur, Ill., and Lillie Evans of Abbeville; two brothers, Bud Bradley and Bob Bradley, both of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

JONESVILLE — Vera Edith Blackwell Sprouse, 81, widow of Leonard Lee Sprouse, formerly of South Jonesville Highway, Jonesville, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in the McDowell Nursing Center in Nebo, N.C., after an extended illness.

Mrs. Sprouse was born in Union on April 28, 1923, a daughter of the late A.B. Blackwell and Lougenia Worthy Blackwell. Mrs. Sprouse was a graduate of Robinson Business College
and was formerly employed with Gregory’s Clothing Store, Gordan’s Shoe Store and Palmetto Drugs. Mrs. Sprouse was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight (Butch) Sprouse and wife Leila (Bunny) Sprouse of Penrose, N.C.; a daughter, Donna S. Payne of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; five great-grandsons; two greatgranddaughters; a sister, Juanita Blackwell of Jonesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mark Edward Bryson, 39, husband of Carol Ann Wilson Bryson of 1000 Delta Road, Whitmire, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004 in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Bryson was born in Sylva, N.C. on Feb. 2, 1965, a son of the late L. Roy Bryson and Jessie Bryson Bryson Ammons. He was a Baptist. Mr. Bryson was manager of Delta Farms in Whitmire.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a sister, Hilda Onita Sellars of Cowpens; a brother, James Levon Bryson of Fayetteville, N.C. Mr. Bryson was predeceased by a brother, Virgil D. Bryson.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Kenny Weaver and Mr. T. Walt Brashier. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Robert Augustus Bowie, 71, husband of Liesbeth Kienast Bowie of 111 Deer Run Road, Union, died at his residence Monday, Sept. 20, 2004.
Mr. Bowie was born in Honea Path, S.C. on June 21, 1933, a son of the late Henry Eugene and Janie Davis Bowie. He was a Baptist. Mr. Bowie was retired from the U. S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Moss and husband David of Inman; a son and daughter-in-law, Alfred Bowie and wife Gail of Union; a brother, Henry E. Bowie of Laurens; six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Graveside services with full military rites will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook.
Visitation will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9 p.m.

Mr. Charles David Tollison Sr., 67, husband of Thesis Ivey Tollison of 761 Barnado Road, Union, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 at 2:40 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Tollison was born in Greenville on July 11, 1937, a son of the late Roy William and Ruth Mae Ledford Tollison. He was a member of the Welcome Baptist Church. Mr. Tollison was retired from Milliken & Co. as a truck driver after 19 years of service and formerly worked with Holcombe Funeral Home. Mr. Tollison was retired from the S. C. National Guard, Union Unit.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Julie T. Gregory of Union; a son, Charles David Tollison Jr. of the home; two sisters, Mary Lee Caldwell of Lexington and Marcelle Douglas of Union and three grandchildren, Ivey W. Gregory, Charles M. Gregory and Kayla Nan Gregory, all of Union.

YORK — Betty McKnight Adkins, 76, of Spartanburg, widow of Roy "Blondie" Dean Adkins, formerly of York, died Sept. 21, 2004 at Eden Terrace Assisted Living Community in Spartanburg.

She was born in York County Aug. 8, 1928 a daughter of the late Star K. McKnight and Cleo Wallace McKnight. She was a member of York A.R.P. Church in York and was a retired secretary with Homelight Textron of Gastonia, N.C. She was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School and attended Winthrop College.

Surviving are a daughter, Patty A. Farris of York; a son, Mickey Adkins of Union; a brother, Walter McKnight of Gaffney; four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Bratton Funeral Home tonight from 6 until 8 and at other times at the home of her daughter, Patty, 2003 Creekword Dr. in York.

Mrs. Peggy Howell Davis, 71, of 1618 Peach Orchard Road, Union, widow of Eugene Z. Davis, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004 at 12:10 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Davis was born in Union on May 23, 1933, a daughter of the late James Samuel (Sam) Howell and Marie Shipman Howell. She was a member of the Westside Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis was formerly employed with Catoe Stores and Tab’s Flea Market in Greer.

Surviving are a brother, Tommy Howell of Union; two nieces, Billie Joe Taylor of Laurens and Trina Vinson of Union; two nephews, Lamar Ivey of Wisconsin and Boyd Ivey of Union; four greatnieces and two greatnephews. Mrs. Davis was predeceased by a sister, Gail Ivey.

SPARTANBURG — Coy L. Jones, 79, husband of Katherine Gregory Jones of 624 Avon Drive, Spartanburg, died at his residence Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 at 10:15 a.m. after an extended illness.

Mr. Jones was born in Union on March 23, 1925, a son of the late James Albert "Sam" Jones and Naomi Quinn Jones. He was a veteran of W.W. II, having served in the U. S. Navy and was a retired painter with Furman Babb Paint Contractors. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Brenda Jones of the home and Patricia Heaton of Clinton; a sister, Sara Gault of Union; five brothers, Colon Duckett of Union, Dennis Duckett and Gene Duckett, both of Cowpens, James Austin, Ralph "Doc" Austin, both of Union and a sister, Marian English of Union; eight grandchildren, Bridget McCullough, Glenda Guy, Pamela Melton, Michelle Thomason, Jeffrey Heaton, Freddie Heaton, Darren Jones and Michael Jones; 18 greatgrandchildren and six greatgreat-grandchildren. Mr. Jones was predeceased y a son, Coy Franklin Jones.

JONESVILLE — Mrs. Carrie Lee Lancaster, 95, widow of Roy Layton Lancaster of 213 Bogan Road, West Springs Community, Jonesville died Tuesday evening, Sept. 21, 2004.

Mrs. Lancaster was born in Union April 23, 1909, a daughter of the late Layton and Ellen Lee Lamb. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mrs. Lancaster was a member of West Springs Baptist Church and the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class where she served as secretary of the class for many years.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Agnes L. and Johnny Bogan of West Springs; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Martha Lancaster of Spartanburg, Wayne and Shirley Lancaster and Charles Sr. and Joyce Lancaster, all of West Springs. She was predeceased by a son, Joe Lancaster and survived by his wife, Jean Lancaster of Peckville, Penn.; two sisters, Ruth Lamb Gregory of Union, Hazel Lamb Bennett of Spartanburg; a brother, Ralph Lamb of Spartanburg; 16 grandchildren and a number of great and great-greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Lancaster was predeceased by two sisters, Willie Mae Lamb Lancaster and Kathleen Lamb Pruitt; two brothers, Wilson Lamb and Harold Lamb.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. today at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Henry Johnson and the Rev. Austin Bennett. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Andy Bogan, Frank Hart, Michael Lancaster, Jeff Lancaster, Craig Lancaster and Leon Lancaster.

Members of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class of West Springs Baptist Church and Unit 1 Staff at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home sat in a group along with Dr. David Keith.

The family received friends at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Agnes Bogan at 219 Bogan Road, West Springs Community, Jonesville, and following the committal service at West Springs Baptist Church.

Wallace M. Lancaster Jr.
Union County native

Mr. Wallace "Waddy" Morgan Lancaster Jr., 88, died Sept. 20, 2004 in a hospital in South Carolina.

Born in Union County, he was a son of the late Wallace Morgan Lancaster Sr. and Carrie Julia Gallman Lancaster. Mr. Lancaster was a member of the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynda Lancaster of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a brother, Max Lancaster of Palrump, Nevada; a granddaughter, Alexandra Lancaster King of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Lancaster was predeceased by a son, Gary Morgan Lancaster, a sister, Carolyn Jean Lancaster and two brothers, Paul Lancaster and Dwight Lancaster.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Wofford officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 until 9.

Paul J. Malone
Retired from Life Insurance of Virginia

Mr. Paul James Malone, 81, of 709 Rice Ave. Union, formerly of Main Street, Buffalo, widower of Mildred Scott Malone, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 22, 2004 at Oakmont Residential Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Malone was born in Buffalo on June 28, 1923, a son of the late Harley Lee Malone and Janie Davis Malone. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Life Insurance Company of Virginia. Mr. Malone was a veteran of WW II having served in the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church where he had served as church treasurer and was selected Father of the Year and was a volunteer with Union County Meals on Wheels and was selected as Volunteer of the Year. He was a former member of the Union County Council, a member and past Master of the Buffalo Masonic Lodge and a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula Malone of Camden; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott Malone and wife Linda of Ridgeway and Chuck Malone and wife Jeanie of Union; four grandchildren, Trey David, Jessica David Hill, Kevin Malone and Anna Malone and three greatgrandchildren. Mr. Malone was predeceased by a brother, Jack Malone.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Kevin Dalton, the Rev. Herb Stevens and the Rev. Phillip Chandler. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Active pallbearers will be Trey David, Kevin Malone, Bill O’Dell, Donnie Crisp, Danny Marvin, Gene Crisp, Tommy Robertson, Terry Robertson and Dale Hill.

BUFFALO — Mrs. Alberta Wright Brock, 77, wife of Raymond Henry Brock of 714 Linersville Road, Buffalo, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Brock was born in Buffalo on Aug. 18, 1927, a daughter of the late Homer and Elizabeth Justice Wright. She was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed in the office of the Union County Auditor. She was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church and was a former Sunday School teacher.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin Wright Brock and wife Donna Todd Brock of Waynesville, N.C. and Anthony Wayne Brock and wife Karen Whitehead Brock of Buffalo; a sister, Mrs. Grady (Zora) O’Dell of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Rachel Brock and Phillip Brock, both of Waynesville, N.C., Kip Brock and Ginny Beth Brock, both of Buffalo. Mrs. Brock was predeceased by a sister and brother, Beatrice Marvin and Wayne Wright.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Helen Bentley Harris, 78, wife of Manual Grady "Preach" Harris of 208 Pasture Dr., Union, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Harris was born in Union, Dec. 5, 1925, a daughter of the late George and Josie Palmer Bentley. She was retired from Cone Mills’ Carlisle Finishing Plant. Mrs. Harris was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she was a member of the A.G. Carter Sunday School Class, a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women..

Mrs. Harris is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jean and Bo Inman of Union; three sons, and their wives, Kenneth Wayne and Betty Harris of Lyman, Verlyn Eugene "Buddy" and Kathy Harris of Union and James Wallace Harris of the home; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Dean McKeown, Crystal Diane McKeown, Kristy Michelle Harris, Brian Bradburn, Miranda Kay Harris, Misty Michelle Wright, Amber Nicole Harris and Ashley Brooke Harris; and five greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by a grandson, Billy Ray McKeown.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Keith Sweat and the Rev. Carl Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BUFFALO — Luther M. Boulware, 72, of 3596 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, husband of Donna Franklin Boulware, died at his residence Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at 8:50 p.m.

Mr. Boulware was born in Union County on Sept. 18, 1932, a son of the late Eugene and Bessie Mae Lawson Boulware. He was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College. Mr. Boulware was a member of Putman Baptist Church and was founder and life-time member of the U. S. Sportsman’s Club. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Marlene Waldrop of Union and Robin Turner of the home; a son, Bobby Boulware of Buffalo; a sister, Evelyn Tucker of Union; two brothers, Lewis Boulware of Buffalo and Fletcher Boulware of Union; six grandchildren, Christopher Boulware and Cameron Boulware, both of the home; Jennifer Boulware of Union, Kelly Frye, Erica Boulware and Philip Boulware, all of Buffalo and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

J. L. Lawson, Jr.
World War II veteran

John Lewis "J. L." Lawson, 82, husband of Mary Margaret Bailey Lawson of 167 Haney Cemetery Road, Union, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at 3:05 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Lawson was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Lawson was born in Union County on April 25, 1922, a son of the late John Lewis Lawson Sr. and Minnie Scales Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a faithful member of Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church where he served on many committees. He was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and the National Radio Institute. He served in World War II with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations in Germany, France and Austria. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the European/African, Middle East Medal. Mr. Lawson was employed by Lockhart Power Co. for 49 and a half years and served as supervisor for the switchboard technicians. He was a member of the American Legion for 51 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Rick Morrison of Spartanburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Cynthia Lawson of Union; two grandsons, John Morrison of Columbia and Michael Morrison and his wife Debbie of Greer; a brother, James W. Lawson of Union; and a sister, Elizabeth Lawson of Union. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Margaret Lawson and Sara L. Sprouse and Perrin Lawson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Sweat, the Rev. Richard Lewis and Mr. Oscar Saddler. Burial will be in the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites.
