Preston Knox

Mr. Ernest Preston Knox, 65, of 134 E. Forest Drive, Union, husband of Carol E. Casey Knox, died Friday in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Knox was born in Union on June 18, 1939, a son of the late Ernest and Evadell Harris Knox. Mr. Knox has been retired for many years, but enjoyed socializing with his friends. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mr. Knox was previously married to the late Victoria Morris Knox.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Angela K. Wyatt of Pacolet; two sons, Tim Knox and Jason Knox, all of Union; two step-sons, Chris Casey of Union and Jeff Casey of Pauline; a sister, Frankie Knox of Union; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Reuben Wallace. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

The family is at the home of his sister, Frankie Knox, 121 Mill Street, Union.

LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Donald Eugene Bayne, 69, husband of Eugenia Alexander Bayne of 1885 Clark Road, Little Mountain, died at his residence Saturday, April 2, 2005.

PAULINE — Patricia Gail Brown, 65, of 6392 Highway 56, Pauline, crossed over into Heaven on Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 11 a.m.

Miss Brown was born in Greer on Feb. 6, 1940, a daughter of the late Rev. J.D. Brown and Lucille Ward Brown. She was a faithful member and Prayer Warrior of the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Miss Brown was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College and was employed with Life Insurance of Georgia for 40 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Club of Buffalo.

Surviving are a brother, Jimmy D. Brown of the home; and a sister, Elaine B. Farmer and husband Warren of Pauline. Miss Brown was a loving aunt to Stephanie and Shaun McCormick, Gina and Danny Ponder, Candy and Dale Billings, Jordan and Jacob Billings, Jeff, Lisa, and Nicholas Farmer.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Randy Pettit. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8.

Geraldine Petty Johnson, 90, widow of Albert D. Johnson, formerly of West Main St., Union, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 4:15 p.m. in Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney after an extended illness.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Union on Nov. 19, 1914, a daughter of the late James Alexander Petty and Dora Nix Petty. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church — now Crestview Baptist Church — and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a sister, Bernice P. Chalk of Gaffney; a niece, Sandra C. Martin of Gaffney; two nephews, James W. Chalk Jr. of Centreville, Va., and Ray Petty of Hartsville. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by two brothers, Emmett Petty and James Reuben Petty.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Bobby Crocker.

The family is at the home of her niece, Sandra C. Martin, 123 Saxon Drve, Gaffney and will receive friends at Union Memorial Gardens immediately following the graveside service.

Lewis D. Watts, Sr.

Rev. Lewis D. Watts, Sr., 85, of 304 Blassingame Street, Union, husband of Elizabeth Arnold Watts, died Thursday, in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Rev. Watts was born in Chester County, on September 26, 1919, a son of the late George Levi Watts and Sara Sprouse Watts. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. Rev. Watts was a member and retired Pastor of the Blassingame Street Church of God of Prophecy and formerly employed with Milliken & Company-Monarch Plant for 40 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Martha Jane Vanderford of Buffalo, Nina Lynn Birch of Spartanburg and Olivia Fay Stuart of Lyman; two sons, Lewis D. Watts, Jr. of Lockhart and Laddie Wayne Henderson of Jonesville; a sister, Susie Green of New York; a brother, Mason Hipps of Pacolet; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, conducted by Pastor Paul E. Johnson, Rev. Kenneth Baker and Rev. William Lewis King. Burial will be in the Padgetts Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday night, at the funeral home.

SWAINSBORO — J. W. Sanderson, 67, of Swainsboro, Ga., died Wednesday, April 6, 2005. Mr. Sanderson was the brother of Jane Ledford of Union.

Vernon M. Stevens
World War II veteran

Vernon Murphy Stevens, 87, husband of Josephine Preis Stevens, formerly of Cross Keys Highway, died Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Oakmont Residential Center.

Mr. Stevens was born in Cross Keys April 27, 1917, a son of the late Frank Arthur Stevens and Josie Murphy Stevens. He worked with Union Automotive before becoming owner of Stevens’ Service Station and Grocery in Cross Keys from where he retired in 1978. Mr. Stevens was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was a member of Padgetts Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Training Union director and Sunday School director and teacher. Mr. Stevens was a graduate of Cross Anchor High School. He served as Magistrate for Cross Keys Township for 20 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Ruby S. Austin of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Ronald V. Stevens of Greenvrier, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruby S. Varner of Buffalo and Julia Corley of Lexington; two grandsons, Christopher Stevens serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and Kevin Stevens serving in the U.S. Air Force in England; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Padgetts Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Carroll Caldwell, the Rev. Dr. Joe Smith and the Rev. Melvin Hudson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Andrew Brent Addis, infant son of Brandy Garner and Matthew Brent Addis, of 273 Whitlock Lake Road, Jonesville, died Friday, April 8, 2005 at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Andrew was born on January 18, 2005 in Charleston.

Surviving in addition to his parents, are his maternal grandmother, Jane Garner of Jonesville; paternal grandparents, Brent and Vickie Addis of Jonesville; maternal great-grandmother, Rachel Garner of Jonesville; paternal great-grandparents, Larkin and Toots Burgess and Hattie Addis, all of Jonesville; uncle, Blaine Addis of Jonesville.

Robert E. Mull

Robert E. Mull, 67, widower of Faye Wilson Mull, of 220 Eaves Road, Whitmire, died Friday, April 8, 2005, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Mull was born in Union, Jan. 28, 1938, a son of the late Lawrence Mull and Katherine Marie Mull Hardin. He was retired from Renfro Corp. in Whitmire and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Mull was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Whitmire Unit.

Surviving are two sons, Marshall Mull and Bruce Mull, and his wife, Christina, all of Whitmire; two sisters, Lois Scott of Union and Louise Cool of Laurens; and three grandchildren, Justin Mull, Cassie Mull and Teddy Mull.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Edgar Foster. Burial was in Whitmire Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Joey Wessinger, Kenny Scott, Freddie Mull, Mike Willard, Chris Peay, Mike Matthews and Larry Smith.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night.

Mary Boughman

Mary Boughman, 69, of 922 Hawkins Road, Union, died at her home on Monday, April 11, 2005 after a sudden illness.

Ms. Boughman was born in Union on Oct. 3, 1935, a daughter of the late Guthrie and Lizzie Thomas Boughman. She was a lifetime member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was the treasurer and played the organ each Sabbath. Ms. Boughman was retired from Piedmont Concrete Co. in Union.

Ms. Boughman was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Boughman and Phillip Boughman.

She is survived by three nieces, Sherri Starin of Columbia, Brenda Hopson and Mitzi Boughman, both of Knoxville, Tenn., four greatnieces, Amy Starin and Molly Starin, both of Columbia, Regan Boughman and Drew Hopson, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a great nephew, Devin Hopson of Knoxville, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by Pastor Marvin Hunt. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

Clarence Earl Greer
World War II veteran

Clarence Earl Greer, 80, widower of Athaleen Ivey Greer, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Oakmont Nursing Home after a long illness.

Mr. Greer was born in Union, May 5, 1924, a son of the late James and Sally Edwards Greer. Mr. Greer was a retired owner and operator of Greer’s Exxon and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jimmy Greer and his wife, Kim, of Union; two sisters, Nina G. Wilson and Margaret Moore, both of Union; three brothers, Paul Greer, John Greer and Hubert Greer, all of Union; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Greer was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Garret, a sister, Lena Ivey; and two brothers, Manley Greer and Ed Greer.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Allen Senn and the Rev. Roger Plemmons.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

BUFFALO — Robert Donald (Donnie) Moore Jr., 49, husband of Edelyn Little Moore of 2157 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, April 12, 2005 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Moore was born in Union, Aug. 28, 1955, a son of Robert Donald (Don) Moore Sr. and Ann Lawson Moore of Buffalo. He was a graduate of Union High School Class of 1973 and a graduate of the University of South Carolina-Upstate. Mr. Moore had been employed with the Sherwin-Williams Co. for 33 years and was current manager at the Sherwin-Williams store in Laurens. He began his career with his father at the Sherwin-Williams store in Union. Mr. Moore was owner of the competitive barbecue team “Team Buffalo” and was a licensed Kansas City Competitive Barbecue Judge. Mr. Moore was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon of the church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Carrie Montgomery Moore of the home; a brother, Thomas Lawson (Tommy) Moore of Spartanburg; his mother-in-law and father-inlaw, Warren and Florence Little of Jonesville; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Eugenia and Bruce Taylor of Fort Mill and Susan and Mike Scales of Jonesville; two nieces, Stacy Taylor and Emily Scales; and a nephew, Matthew Scales.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Jonesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Parham was born in Spartanburg on March 13, 1942, a daughter of the late Leonard Ezelle Bradburn and Lucille Taylor Bradburn. She was a member of The S a l vat i o n Army Citadel.

William Eugene
“Bill” Greene Sr.
Retired from Milliken

William Eugene “Bill” Greene Sr., 77, beloved husband of Meredith Roberson Greene of 400 Wilson St., died at their home on Friday, April 15, 2005, at 1:37 a.m.

Mr. Greene, the youngest son of William Robert and Georgia Anna Gosey Greene, was born in Rutherford County, N.C., on May 14, 1927. Educated in the Rutherford County School System, he served in the United States Navy from 1945-46; four years in the Naval Reserves and achieved the rank of captain (search and rescue pilot) as a member of the United States Civil Air Patrol.

On March 19, 1947, Mr. Greene was employed with Milliken & Company. As a truly dedicated and highly capable employee, he quickly rose from an entry level job to ascending upper-level managerial positions, including those at Excelsior, Ottaray and Lockhart plants in Union County as well as ones in Tryon, N.C.; Lisbon Falls, Maine; Golden Valley, N.C.; and Toccoa, Ga. During his last eight years of Milliken employment he worked as a consultant to customers with technical problems and on new fabric designs at the Milliken Center in Spartanburg. He was recognized by Mr. Roger Milliken at the Milliken Special Awards Banquet on Jan. 30, 1996 for 58 years of continuous service.

Other honors included being president of The Southern Woolen and Worsted Textile Association for three terms, a recipient of one of the South Carolina Governor’s highest and most prestigious awards, “The Order of the Palmetto,” during the Richard W. Riley administration; a recipient of the Service to Mankind Award (1992-93) presented by the Union Sertoma Club; and the first Lifetime Ex-officio member of the Union County Airport Commission of which he had served as chairman.

Mr. Greene was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to those in need. Other memberships include the following: The auxiliary of the United States Air Force, American Legion Post 22; Master Mason/Life Member of Union Masonic Lodge #75; the Union Shrine Club; the Hejaz Shrine Temple in Greenville (charter member); the South Carolina Sheriff ’s Association (life member); Union Elks Lodge #1321 where he served on a variety of committees. For over 30 years he was actively involved in local, state and national Elks committees, leadership roles and projects. Locally he served as Esteemed Leading Knight (1972-74); Exalted Ruler (1974-76); Trustee Union Lodge (1976-2003); Grand Lodge Advisor to the Union Elks Lodge; and President of the Union Elks Lodge Past Exalted Rulers Association. State positions included District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Western South Carolina (1976-77); Vice-President Western District (1978-80); State President of South Carolina Elks Association (1980-81); Director of the South Carolina Elks Executive Committee (1994-95) and South Carolina Elks Scholarship Committee. He also served as chairman of the Elks National Foundation, local and state levels. Even during his declining years and final battle with lung, brain and spinal cancer, he remained adamant that local students apply for and receive Elks scholarships on the state or local level. He was very honored and proud to be of service to his community, his state and his country. Awarding scholarships was one of the ways that he accomplished his personal goals and achieved his dreams of being of service to mankind. Another was his active participation in the local, state and national projects to support efforts to find a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Four phrases defined his life: His church, his family, his country and his contribution to the betterment of mankind.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Deborah Greene of Union; two sons and a daughter-inlaw, William Eugene Greene Jr. of Chapin and David Alton Greene and his wife, Suzette of Waterloo; a granddaughter, Heather Webb Greene of Spartanburg; four grandsons, Patrick Corey Greene of Hodges, Tyler Casey Greene of Greenville, N.C.; Sean Michael Greene of Waterloo and William Eugene “Trey” Greene III of Chapin; a greatgranddaughter, Summer Leigh Greene of Greenwood; a great-grandson, Cameron Anthony Greene of Hodges; a sister, Jessie Greene Crawford of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Dennis Alton Greene of Rutherfordton, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews; a “third” son and loving caregiver, Eric Bruce Walker of Union; a “fifth” grandson, Christopher Mark Shook; and a special friend, Pamela Trussell of Chapin . Mr. Greene was predeceased by a son, Norris Franklin Greene; two sisters, Alda Greene Bowen and Louise Greene Rash; and two brothers, George Tew Greene and Robert Clyde Greene; all of Rutherford County, N.C.

Funeral services for Greene will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Active pallbearers will be grandson Tyler Casey Greene; nephews Dennis Michael Greene and William Charles Greene; Christopher Mark Shook, James Lancaster, Gary Lindler, Michael Swofford and Ronald Wade.

Mr. Raymond Henry Brock, 79, of 714 Linersville Road, Buffalo, widower of Alberta Wright Brock, died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 8:30 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Brock was born in Buffalo on February 19, 1926, a son of the late Thomas and Mae Barnett Brock. He was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church. Mr. was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired building contractor. He was a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are two sons, Kevin Wright Brock and wife Donna Todd Brock of Waynesville, NC and Anthony Wayne Brock and wife Karen Whitehead Brock of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Kip Brock, Rachel Brock, Ginny B. Brock and Phillip Brock; a sister, Juanita B. Nance of Buffalo; and four brothers, Buddy Brock of New Ellington, Wallace Brock of Aiken, Donald Brock of Buffalo, and Hampton Brock of Jonesville.

LOCKHART — William C. “Buster” Bailey, 84, of 409 North 2nd St., Lockhart, husband of Helen Ruth Gault Bailey, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 5:05 p.m. in Wallace T h o m s o n Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Bailey was born in Mt. Tabor on Nov. 4, 1920, a son of the late John D. and Lonie Cudd Bailey. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years service, having served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Mr. Bailey was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Patricia B. Llamas of Tuscon, Ariz.; two sons, Patrick Bailey and Carl Bailey, both of California; three step-daughters, Dale Cabaniss of Lockhart, Gale Douglas and Phoebe Massey, both of Union; a sister, Muriel B. Cox of Augusta, Ga.; a godson, Adam Harris of Union; five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial with full military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Walter F. Mitros Jr.
World War II veteran

Walter F. Mitros Jr., 79, husband of Kathryn Reynolds Mitros of 324 River Hills Road, Union, died at his home Wednesday, April 20, 2005 after a long illness.

Mr. Mitros was born in Grand Rapids, Mich.,, June 24, 1925 a son of the late Walter F. Mitros Sr. and Kathrine Wrobleski Mitros. He was first married to the late Mary Ruth Fowler Mitros. Mr. Mitros was a graduate of Union High School of Grand Rapids and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. Mr. Mitros was formerly employed with Milliken & Co. at the Monarch and Ottaray plants in Union and the Seminole Plant in Clearwater. He retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mr. Mitros was initiated into the Union Elks Lodge $1321 on Jan. 2, 1961 and became a life member on Jan. 2, 1991 as he had served in all offices of the lodge. Mr. Mitros was Exalted Ruler for two terms, 1964-65 and 1965-66. He was District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler from 1969-1970 and served as vice president of the South Carolina State Elks Association from 1970-1972 and as the State President from 1972-1973. Mr. Mitros was also a mason and a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Anne Mitros of Seneca; two daughters, Pamela Susan Stanfield of Towanda, Pa., and Kathryn Ruth Hardin and husband Charles K. of Blythwood,; three step-daughters, and their husband, Kathryn Elizabeth Smith and Roger of Huntsville, Ala., Linda Faye Taylor and Harold of Greenville and Brenda Kaye Nottingham and Allen of Dallas, Texas; a step-son, Robert K. Sullivan of Greenville; a brother, Robert J. Mitros of Union; four grandchildren, William Ashley Mitros and wife Kristi of Simpsonville, Katy Kingsmore and husband Mike of Prosperity, Matthew Browder and fiance Shauna of Little Mountain and Kristy Keen of Tacoma, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Mitros and Cameron Mitros of Simpsonville, Lee Kingsmore of Prosperity and Katalina Browder of Little Mountain; five step-grandchildren, Johnny Nalley, Daniel Nalley and David Taylor, all of Greenville; Jacob Smith and Jesse Smith of Huntsville, Ala., and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gary Byrd.

The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 until 8 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Brian Robert Foster Woods, 28, of 415 Pineland Road, Union, died Wednesday afternoon from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mr. Woods was born in Spartanburg on July 27, 1976, a son of Jim Woods Jr. and Maxine Poole Woods of the home. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. Mr. Woods was a graduate of Dorman High School.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his paternalgrandparents, Jim and Frances Woods of Union; his m at e r n a l - g r a n d p a re n t s, Charles and Shirley Taber of Union; his maternal-greatgrandmother, Nannie Mae Sprouse of Union; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Don Lancaster

BUFFALO —Donald Robert “Don” Lancaster, 71, of 2222 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, husband of Priscilla Shuler Lancaster, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at 9:30 p.m. in Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg. The family is at the home, 2222 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo.

Mr. Lancaster was born in the Parham Community of Union County on January 26, 1934, a son of the late Robert Theodore Lancaster and Willie Mae Lamb Lancaster. He was a graduate of West Springs High School and was retired Maintenance Supervisor with Torrington Company-Tyger River Plant. Mr. Lancaster was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, where he had served as Trustee and Board Member and was a former member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church Mens Chorus. He was a life-member of Experimental Aircraft Association and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was a charter member of the Buffalo Hunt Club and was a carrier for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal for over 12 years.

Surviving addition to his wife, are a daughter, Lisa L. Parham and husband Patrick of Mandeville, IA; two sons, Mark E. Lancaster and fiancé Kathy Jo Chambers of Buffalo, Lynn A. Lancaster and wife Tracy of Ashboro, NC; two sisters, Melba L. Rogers and Ferol L. Youngblood and husband Ray, all of Buffalo; two brothers, William A. Thelma B. Smith

Mrs. Thelma Mae Beard Smith, 83, of 209 Hillcrest Drive, Union, widow of Roger Owen Smith, died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 10:27 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Smith was born in Florence, SC on March 11, 1922, a daughter of the late George Frank Beard and May Bell Crews Beard. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union.

Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are four daughters, Peggy S. and Curt Ridgeway of Columbia, Genie S. and Pat Hightower of Chapin, Pam S. Cool and Lonnie English of Lawrenceville, GA and Debby S. and Tom Giesen of Lyman; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory and Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.

The body will be placed in the chapel of the First Baptist Church Sunday at 1:30 p.m., where the family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m.

Lena Marie Burgess Board, 85, formerly of Tiger Court, Union, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. She was the widow of Herman Board of Chester.
Mrs. Board was born in Lockhart, June 9, 1919, a daughter of the late Frank H. and Josephine Fowler Burgess. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Mauldene of North Carolina; a grandson, Jason Grainger and wife Nickie of Inman; a great-grandson, Garet Grainger; a sister-inlaw, Eva Jane Burgess of Lockhart; two nephews, Donald Burgess and wife Sharon and their children, Richard and Jack Burgess, all of Lockhart; Paul “Buddy”: Burgess, wife Norma and their children, Trey and Brooke Burgess, all of Lockhart; and a niece, Pat Bentley and husband Akin and their children, Janet Crocker, Mark Bentley and Michael Bentley, all of Lockhart.

Retired from Buffalo Mill

Ruby Irene West Lawson, 97, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Oakmont Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Lee West and Ella Marie Brown West. She was the widow of Harold A. Lawson who died in 1986.

Mrs. Lawson retired from United Merchants & Manufacturing, Buffalo Plant and was a life-long member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was very active in the choir. She was over the intermediate department of the church for 30 years. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a son, Donald Russell Lawson Sr. and his wife, Joan Bishop Lawson, of Rockport in Pacolet; three grandsons, Donald Russell Lawson Jr. and wife Kathy of Spartanburg, William Barry Lawson and fiancee Kristen Nebesky of Greenville and Eric Lee Lawson and wife Sophia of Spartanburg; two great-granddaughters, Nancy Calloway (Calli) Lawson and Mallori Joan Lawson of Spartanburg; and a sister, Catherine West Finch. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by four sisters, Louise West Dupree, Ethel West Padgett, Sadie West Lamb and Nell West Jones. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Joseph Lee West, William C. West and James Douglas West. Mrs. Lawson is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Anderson and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Evans was born in Pacolet on May 8, 1926, a daughter of the late Homer Eugene and Nannie Moss Kirby. She was a graduate of West Springs High School. Mrs. Evans was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and a member of the Happy Hearts of the church.

Surviving are two daughters, Rhonda Ingle and husband Rickey of Union and Reba Vinson and husband Russell of Jonesville; a granddaughter, Ashleigh Johnson of Union; a grandson and his friend, Danny Cannon and Tammy Tucker of Union; three sisters, Thelma Crawford and friend Kent Webber, Pat Turner and Brenda Parkins and husband Jimmy, all of Jonesville; three brothers, Paul “Bo” Kirby and wife Maudie, Grady Kirby and wife Teri , all of Jonesville and Bob Kirby and wife Wanda of Murrell’s Inlet. Mrs. Evans was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Ruby Davis, Homer “Junebug” Kirby Jr. and Carl Kirby.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Horace T. O’Shields, 90, of Panama City, Fla., died at his residence Saturday, April 23, 2005. He was the widower of Pearl Lancaster O’Shields.

Mr. O’Shields was born in Spartanburg, Jan. 6, 1915, a son of the late J.W. O’Shields and Helen Smith O’Shields. He was a retired banker and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in World War II. Mr. O’Shields was a former member of West Springs Baptist Church and a member of the First Baptist Church in Panama City, Fla.

Surviving are a son, John L. O’Shields of Buffalo; two sisters, Hazel O. Babb and husband, Bill of Buffalo and Matrel O. Stribling and husband Bob of Saluda, N.C.; and a special friend, Nadine Boles of Panama City, Fla..

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at West Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Henry Johnson, the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Everett Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
