Furman L. Fendley

UNION, SC-- Furman Lester Fendley was born May 16, 1918, in Westminster, SC. He passed peacefully on November 30, 2005, after an extended illness.

Furman served in the SC House of Representatives for eight years. He served on the State Highway Commission for eight years, and was chairman for one term. The four lane highway from Union to Spartanburg, Hwy. 176, was named the Furman L. Fendley Highway because of his dedication to this project.

Furman served on the SC Farm Bureau State Board for 30 years, and received the Distinguished Service Award. He was past Chairman of the State Land Resource Commission, past President of the SC Rural Water Commission, and was a member of the SC Beef Board. He was past President of the Union County Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Union County Carnegie Library Board, past Chairman of the Union Soil and Water Conservation District, and a member of the Provident Community Bank Board of Directors for 25 years. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church of Union, where he was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, Deacon and past Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and served on the Sanctuary Building Committee.

Furman served in the U. S. Navy on the U.S.S. Dickerson in World War II. He survived an attack from a Japanese suicide-plane that sank his ship. A number of his fellow crew members were killed and Furman and some of his fellow mates were rescued from the Pacific Ocean after being stranded in the water for more than eight hours.

Furman is survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy S. Whitney of Union, SC; a sister, Louise and husband Bill Harris of Westminister, SC; a brother, Dan and wife Wilma Fendley of Westminister, SC; a brother, Raymond Fendley of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Jimbo and wife Anita Whitney, and their children Eva, Bo, Ann and Julia of Union; a nephew, Billy and wife Patsy Whitney and their son Will of Union and daughters Emily Whitney of Greenville, SC and Louisa Whitney of Stamford, Connecticut; a niece, Dorothy Mobley Jones and her son Ronald Foster Fendley Jones of Columbia, SC; a nephew, Johnny and wife Carolyn Harris of Westminister, SC; a niece, Susan and husband Mike Head of Westminister, SC; a niece, Mary and husband Cris Watkins of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Alan Fendley of Westminister, SC; twin nieces, Karen Craig and Sharon Fendley of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Douglas and wife Linda Fendley of Westminister, SC; a niece, Sherill and husband David Callahan of Indiana; and a niece, Janet and husband Clay Greer of Westminister, SC; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Furman was predeceased by his wife and long time companion of 60 years, Sue Frances Whitney Fendley; a brother, Joe Fendley of Clarksville, VA; a brother, Henry Fendley of Westminister, SC, and half sisters, Lala Fendley Dyar of Seneca, SC, Margi Fendley Price of Westminister, SC and Veda Fendley Isbell of Westminister, SC; and a half brother, Bill Fendley of Fayetteville, NC.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the home of Mr. Fendley, 3809 Whitmire Hwy., Union, SC.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 2, 2005 at Hebron Baptist Church of Union, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers are Whitney Smith, Mike Anthony, Norris Fowler, Louis Jordan, Ed Mitchell and Barham Kennedy.

James H. Cody
Retired plumber

James H. Cody, 67, of 806 S. Pinckney St., died at his home.

Mr. Cody was born in Greenville on April 2, 1938, a son of the late James T. Cody and Lillie Mae Malone Cody. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and had been a member of the Union Jaycees and was a former Scoutmaster. Mr. Cody was a retired plumber, having worked with Mize Plumbing Contractors for a number of years and was also retired from the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit, after 42 years of service.

Surviving are five brothers, Jack Cody and David Cody, both of Union; John Cody of Alabama, Ralph Cody of Louisiana and Robert Cody of Union; and two special friends, Ethel Jolly and Linda Jolly Carlin. Mr. Cody was predeceased by a sister, Peggy Trammell and a brother, Donald Cody.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home conducted by Mr. Don Shetley and Mr. Joe Malone.

The family will be at the home of his brother, Robert Cody, 508 E. Main St., Union and will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday night from 6:30 until 8.

Edward R. Johnson
Former Lockhart resident

Edward R. Johnson, 59, of 119 Keith Lane, Union, husband of Mary K. Johnson, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Slyvia Wilkinson, Darlene Johnson and Edward R. Johnson Jr.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; seven step-children, 17 step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. at Lockhart United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lockhart United Methodist Church.

Gertrude H. Knox
Union County native

Gertrude Haney Knox, 78, of 968 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, widow of Jack Knox, died at her home Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at 8:50 p.m. after a brief illness.

Mrs. Knox was born in Union on April 19, 1927, a daughter of the late Horace G. Haney and Clara Bell James Haney. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School. Mrs. Knox was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are a daughter, Frances K. Burton of Anderson, three sons, Kenneth “Cooter” Knox and wife Marie, Jack David Knox and wife Mary and Dennis “Sput” Knox, all of Union; a brother, Hoyt Haney of Union; eight grandchildren, Justin Knox, Chris Knox, Teresa Knox, Tim Knox, Rhonda Johnson, Ashley Knox, Brittany Knox and Daniel Knox; four greatgrandchildren, Hagan Johnson, Austin Knox, Alexis Knox, and Brooke Johnson; and three special care givers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Keith Sweatt and the Rev. Larry Hyder. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Tim Knox, Justin Knox, Warren Johnson, Dan Hogsed, David Becknell and William Scales.

Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Vera Arrowood Lawson, 85, formerly of 113 Terrace Drive, Union, widow of Woodrow Lawson, did at Oakmont Nursing Home Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at 4:12 p.m. after an extended illness.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Cherokee County on Dec. 7, 1919, a daughter of the late James Richard Arrowood and Ida Howell Arrowood. She was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Lawson attended USC-Union and was a retired licensed practical nurse having worked with long term care with DHEC. Mrs. Lawson was first married to the late Paul White. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, James E. White and wife Tommie of Rutherfordton, N.C.; two daughters, Joyce W. Ivey and husband James of Spartanburg and Betty W. Austin of Chester; six grandchildren, Thom White of Rutherfordton, N.C., Heather Davis and husband Alan of Cane Creek, N.C., Billy Austin of Rock Hill, Mike Robinson of Columbia and Jody Robinson of Calabash, NC. and Jim Ivey of Jonesville; six great-grandchildren; and a special friend and neighbor, Sandy Montgomery. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a grandson, Jim Robinson.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Reuben Wallace.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Luke H. Wyatt
World War II veteran

SFC (Retired) Luke H. Wyatt, 82, formerly of 519 Hemlock Drive, Boiling Springs, widower of Ruth Brown Wyatt died at Oakmont Nursing Home Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005 after an extended illness.

Mr. Wyatt was born in Buffalo, Aug. 6, 1923, a son of the late Arthur and Eunice Millwood Wyatt. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in World War II. Mr. Wyatt reentered the military and served in the Vietnam conflict with the U.S. Army, retiring from the Army with over 20 years of active duty service. Mr. Wyatt later retired from Southern Wood Piedmont and was a member of the Care Baptist Church in Duncan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors are four sons, Bob Wyatt of Chuluota, Fla., Mike Wyatt and Steve Wyatt, both of Spartanburg, and Scott Wyatt of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Shirley Jones of Martinez, Ga., and Judy Jordan of Lockhart; a sister-in-law, Helen Rector of Columbia; 17 grandchildren, 15 greatgrandchildren and two greatgreat-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Mike Cooke. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with military honors. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Retired textile worker

Agnes Rebecca Sinclair Fuller, 77, of 721 Lakeside Drive, Union, widow of Samuel Earl Fuller, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 5, 2005 at her home.

Mrs. Fuller was born July 20, 1928 in Greenwood, a daughter of the late Jeff and Eva Marie Maness Sinclair. She attended Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. Mrs. Fuller attended Greenwood area schools and retired from textiles where she worked in Union Mill and later in Newberry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Mowdy and husband Thomas with whom she made her home and Wanda Fowler and husband Wayne of Jonesville; four sons, Thomas Earl Fuller and wife Trish of Pelzer, Larry O’Dell Fuller of Honea Path, Robert Earl Fuller of Ridgeway and Samuel Eugene Fuller and wife Martha of Cordele, Ga.; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons.

Visitation will be held 6 until 9 Wednesday evening at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church, 557 Kelly Road, Union.

Union native

Fred Eugene Owenby, 68, of 102-B Cogdil Plaza, Union, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Owenby was born in Union May 15, 1937, a son of the late Grady and Flora Cope Owenby.

Survivors are: a brother, Johnnie Owenby of Union; four sisters, Florence Gist of Greenville, Alice Harris of Union, Dorothy Crocker of Buffalo and Mary Sue Bailey of Union.

Retired from Army National Guard

Guy W. Stewart, 75, husband of Dot Prince Stewart of 205 Maid Marion Drive, Union, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Stewart was born in Sedalia, Aug. 7, 1930, a son of the late Daulton F. and Eloise Estes Stewart. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Jim Palmer Sunday School Class. Mr. Stewart was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union unit, and retired as a Food Service Specialist with ARNG at Fort Jackson.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Debbie Stewart Richardson of Conway; a granddaughter, Kelly Elizabeth Stewart of Buffalo; a grandson, Stewart Richardson of Conway; three sisters, Nannie Lou Nance of Union, Jumelle Estes of Easley and Sara Belue of Rock Hill; a brother, Paul Stewart of Union; a stepdaughter, Mary Jo Sanders, three stepsons, Jack Burnett III, Jim Burnett and John Burnett, all of Union. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Reece Stewart, a sister, Myrtle Palmer Ferguson and a bother, Fred Stewart.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with military honors. JoAnn Collins, 69, formerly of Union, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005 in the Heritage Health Center in Hendersonville, N.C., after an extended illness.

Ms. Collins was born in Union on Jan. 16, 1936, a daughter of the late Thomas Swinton Collins and Eva Viola Johnson Collins. She was a member of the Union Church of God. Ms. Collins was formerly employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna H. Gooch of Greenville, Terri J. Howze of Florence and Lori A. Crocker of Spartanburg; a son, George L. “Len” Henderson of Lockhart; a sister, Peggy O. Collins of Union; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Walter Parham. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Samuel R. Cain Jr.
Retired educator

Samuel Ramsey Cain Jr., 96, widower of Marie Morris Cain, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Oakmont Nursing Home in Union.

Mr. Cain was born in Laurens June 30, 1909, a son of the late Samuel R. Cain Sr. and Ester Ramsey Cain. He was a graduate of Furman University and a retired teacher with Union High School. Mr. Cain was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union where he was a lifetime deacon and taught the Sam Cain Sunday School Class for more than 40 years. Mr. Cain was first married to the late Mildred Tharin Cain.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly C. Gregory and husband Jerry of Columbus, N.C.; a son, Sam R. Cain III and wife Merilyn of Clover; two brothers, Moffitt Cain of Laurens and Roy Cain of Hickory Grove; a sister, Juanita Goodyear of Greenville; two grandsons, Samuel Bryan Cain of Greenville and Jonathan Goldfinch Cain of Clover. Mr. Cain was predeceased by two sisters, Margarite Langston and Helen Thomason, and three brothers, Clifton Cain, James Cain and Hall Cain.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conduced by the Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Joanne H. Gregory
Retired educator

Joanne Frances Hartle Gregory, 70, a native of Drifting, Pa., widow of John W. Gregory, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 in St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Mrs. Gregory was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church of Union. She received her Masters in Education degree from Mansfield University in Maryland and was a retired Secondary Special Education teacher.

Surviving are a son, John R. Gregory of Union; a brother, Maurice Hartle of New Mexico and two sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Gregory and Nita Sanders, both of Union. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by five siblings.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Committal will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

World War II veteran

Esther Hollingsworth Morrison, 82, of 129 Jeter Cemetery Road, Union, widow of Henry Frank Morrison Jr. died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Morrison was born July 15, 1923, a daughter of the late Lawrence Cuspert and Lillian Willard Hollingsworth. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Mrs. Morrison served in the U S. Army as a WAC during World War II. She retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant, and later from Her Majesty.

Survivors are two sons, Henry F. Morrison III and Randall Morrison and wife Wanda, all of Union; two brothers, James Hollingsworth and Henry Hollingsworth, both of Union; a sister, Hortense Sinclair of Union; three granddaughters, Stacie E. Morrison of Spartanburg, Tracie E. Morrison of Atlanta, Ga., and Laurin N. Morrison of Union and a great-grandaughter, Autumn Wilson of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005 at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Miriam V. Woodward
Retired from Excelsior Mill

Miriam Vinson Woodward, 82, of Oakmont Nursing Home, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Woodward was born in Union, Aug. 31, 1923, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Annie Bell Sumner Vinson. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Excelsior Mill as the payroll clerk after 28 years of service. Mrs. Woodward was a member of Sumner Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Ralph P. Woodward Jr. of Union; a granddaughter, Meg W. Bruce of Union; a great-grandaughter, Caroline Bruce of Union; a sister, Doris V. Wetherington of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Woodward was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Lacey Garner.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Robert Emory and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Georgia M. “Rita” Bowers, 64, of 1300 S. Pinckney St., Apt. 208, Union, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 at her home.

Ms. Bowers was born in Union Dec. 15, 1940, a daughter of the late Buford and Florence Knox McKeown. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church and retired from Cone Mills, Carlisle Plant.

Survivors are two daughters, Jackie Barber and husband Perry of Union and Stephanie Bobo of Florida; three grandchildren, Jenna Barber, Javan Bobo and Eleni Bobo, all of Union; a sister, Margaret Roark and husband Albert of Union; and two brothers, Earl McKeown of Union and Ronnie McKeown of Pacolet.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clarence Adkins. Mrs. Nellie Carter Middlebrooks, age 85 formerly of Union, widow of Luther Middlebrooks, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005.

Mrs. Middlebrooks was born February 29, 1920, in Chester County, SC, a daughter of the late William and Sarah Elizabeth Dickens McCoy Carter. She was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II as a WAC-Nurse.

Surviving are a son, Phillip Middlebrooks and wife Laura of Moore; two grandsons, David Middlebrooks and Richard Middlebrooks both of Moore; a sister, Edna C. Sinclair of Columbia; two brothers, Horace Thomas Carter and Earl McCoy, both of Union.

Etta Mae Jones
Retired educator

RADFORD, Va. — Etta Mae “Sister” Jones, 97, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 at her home in Radford. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church in Union and attended Grove United Methodist Church in Radford for the past 10 years.

She was a retired public school teacher with 46 years of service and also worked at Belk’s in Union for 30 years. She was born May 5, 1908, in Union, the daughter of the late Walker and Jessie Caldwell Jones.

Survivors include a special cousin and her husband, Judith Rebecca Jenkins and James Durham of Radford, special grandchildren, David Durham and his wife Melissa of Radford, and Mary Kathryn Durham of Little Rock, Ark., special greatgrandchldren, Jessica and Ryan Durham of Radford; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church in Union with the Rev. Tommy Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.

He is survived by a sister, Ansleigh Reign Erwin of the home; maternal grandparents, Joe and Nancy Blalock of Union; paternal grandmother, Sandy and Ronald Garner of Buffalo; paternal grandfather, David and Teresa Erwin of Ottaray; great-grandparents,, Kenneth and Betty Silvers, Jack and Lillie Mae Blalock, Dever and Doris Erwin and the late Jimmy and Faye Haile.

Glanna Norman Kingsmore, 76, widow of Earl F. Kingsmore, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 in Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Kingsmore was born in Union, July 6, 1929, a daughter of the late Fred and Della Penland Norman. She was a member of the Union Church of Christ and was retired from Oakmont Nursing Center.
Survivors are: two daughters, Jo Anne K. Haney and husband Mark of Buffalo and Trina Dunning and husband Tom of Louisburg, N.C.; a grandson, Evan Mark Haney of Buffalo; three step-grandchildren, Tiffany Dunning, Tommy Dunning and Katie Dunning, all of Maryland; a number of nieces and nephews; a brother-in -law, Russell Eugene Kingsmore of Winston Salem, N.C.; a sisterin-law, Dorothy Norman of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two special care givers, Marissa Hudson and Mary Hudson. Mrs. Kingsmore was predeceased by a brother, Sam Norman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Union Church of Christ by Minister Curtis Gilbert. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Ms. Reno was born May 1, 1927, in Buffalo, SC, a daughter of the late George Harvey Lucas Robinson and Maggie Davis Robinson. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, retired from Milliken & Company, Midway Plant, after 25 years of service, and later worked at Roebuck Family Skate Center.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Echols of Buffalo, and Donna Webber and husband Mike of Duncan; a son, Ronnie Reno and wife Debby of Hendersonville, TN; two brothers, Davis Robinson of Spartanburg, Monore Robinson of Landrum; a sister, Mary Erwin of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, George Robinson.

The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday evening, December 19, 2005 at the funeral home.

John Thomas “Tommy” Boyle, 68, of 142 Mitchell Road, Union, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Boyle was born in Gaffney, Aug. 3, 1937, a son of Gladys Searey Wylie and Eugene Wylie of Union and the late Ted Boyle. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit. Mr. Boyle was retired from Timken Company.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Donna Ray of Union; two sons, Ronnie Boyle and wife Nancy of Aiken and Stanley Boyle and wife Debbie of Union; a sister, Linda Blanton and husband Arnold of Gaffney; a special friend, Hazel Swanson of Union; and two grandchildren, Amanda Boyle and Ronald Boyle. Mr. Boyle was predeceased by a son, Brad Boyle.,

Mrs. Gallman was born in Inman on May 14, 1935, a daughter of Lois Condrey Coleman Gulley of Spartanburg and the late Gene Coleman. She was a member of the Union Church of Christ. Mrs. Gallman was a homemaker having retired from textile work.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a son, Thomas Richard (Ricky) Gallman and wife Connie of Forest City, N.C.; three grandchildren, Holly V. Gallman Brockman of Simpsonville, Daniel L. Jenkins and Samantha M. Jenkins, both of Forest City; a great-grandson, Curtis Shane Gilliam of Forest City and a number of sisters and brothers-in-law.

Mrs. Calvert was born in the Goucher Community of Cherokee County, Sept. 21, 1907, a daughter of the late Jonathan Cleveland and Eugenia Burgess Brown. She was the oldest member of Jonesville Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are a daughter, Jean Calvert “Teeny” Collins and husband Jim of the home; five grandsons, Jim Collins Jr., and wife Karen of Birmingham, Ala., Sam Collins of San Lorenzo, Calif., Dr. Jeff Collins and wife Mitzi of Anniston, Ala., Jonathan Calvert and Jesse L. Calvert IV, all of Hartselle, AL.; six great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Gene Brown Fowler of Jonesville and Chaplain J.C. Brown Jr. of Greenville. Mrs. Calvert was predeceased by a son, Jesse L. Calvert III.

Mr. Greene was born in Union County, May 20, 1932, a son of the late Rufus and Lottie Gunter Greene. He was retired from Cudd’s Sheet Metal of Union. Mr. Greene was an active member of Ottaray Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Vickie Sherbet and husband Richie of Union; two sons, Terry Greene and Ronnie Greene and his wife Tammy, all of Union; a daughter-inlaw, Joyce Greene of Union; a brother, Carrol Greene and wife Shirley of Union; seven grandchildren, Derek E. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tony R. Medford, 63, formerly of Union, husband of Helen Medford, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 in Palms of Pasadena Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mr. Medford was born in Buffalo on June 2, 1942, a son of the late Alvin and Lady Lee Medford. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion and was past governor of the Moose Lodge, all in St. Petersburg. Mr. Medford attended Union High School and was a retired truck driver and selfemployed mechanic.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Kathy Medford and Buffy M. Jennings, both of Union; a son, Todd Medford of St. Petersburg; a sister, Betty Whitmore of Buffalo; a brother, Billy Medford of Union; six grandchildren, Carria Williams and Carson Medford, both of St. Petersburg, Lacey Medford, Katie Medford, Cody Harris and Dylan Rogers, all of Union; a great-grandson, Jordan Williams of St. Petersburg. Mr. Medford was predeceased by a sister, Peggy M. Walker.

Mrs. Garner was born July 12 1931, a daughter of the late James and Ora Worley Miller. She was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant and was a member of the Lockhart Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are two sons, Samuel Ervin Garner of Lockhart, and Bobby R. Garner and wife Debra of Calhoun Falls; a sister, Bernice Love of Chester, Three brothers, Fred Miller of Clermont, Fla., Henry Lee Miller and Phillip Miller, both of Lockhart; two grandson, Larry Eugene Garner and wife Melissa of Donalds and Robert Eric Garner of Calhoun Falls; a great-grandson, Zachary Seth Garner of Donalds. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a son, Willie Emmanuel Garner.

PAULINE — Jennifer Denise Jones Dowd, 22, of 121 Oren Graham Circle, wife of Thomas Dowd, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005. Mrs. Dowd was born in Edmond, Okla., on July 22, 1983, a daughter of Michael Jones of Florida and Vickie Wood Curtis of Pauline and step-daughter of Roland Curtis of Pauline.

She was a homemaker and a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, parents and step- father are a son, Michael Dowd of the home; two sisters, Brittni Curtis of the home and Kaylee Curtis of Union; three brothers, Jason Jones of Florida, Jeremy Curtis of Union and Brad Curtis of Minnesota; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin D. Wood of Texas and her paternalgrandmother, Suzanne Jones of Texas. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Jimmy Jones of Texas.

LEESVILLE —Stephen Eugene Godshall, 58, of 152 Harbour Watch Blvd., Leesville, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Godshall was a native of Washington, D.C., retired and relocated to South Carolina in October 2003 after a 30-year career with The Washington Post.

He was a 1966 graduate of Surrattsville High School, Clinton, Md., and received a bachelor of science degree from Frostburg University in 1974. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country from 1974 to 1976. He was a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Godshall was predeceased by his father, Leslie Eugene Godshall. Surviving are his mother, Lucille Gregory Godshall of Aiken; two sisters, Lauren Alexander and husband Eugene, of Leesville; and Sheree Pertile and husband Charles of Chicago, Ill.; three nephews, Gregory ad Michael Alexander and Michael Pertile; and a niece, Michelle Pertile.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the St. Augustine Catholic Church by Father Francisco Cruz.

Interment will be at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery at Buffalo on Dec. 27, 2005.

Aileen Vinson Lawson, 90, widower of James H. Lawson, formerly of Bishop Place, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Jonesville, Aug. 4, 1912, a daughter of the late James Edward and Mary Ellen Vinson. Mrs. Lawson was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church and was active in the church until her health declined. She was also a 50-year member of the Martha Chapter #79 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Lawson was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from the Union County School System. Mrs. Lawson and her late husband were known for opening their hearts and home to anyone, especially those in need. To have known them is to love them.
Mrs. Lawson was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are:a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jim Maness of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Janet Lawson of Union, and many nieces and nephews who considered her a second mother. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a sister, Sally Vinson and brothers Russell, Willie, George, Ernest, Lloyd, Hayes, Walter (Hoss) and H.H. (Doc) Vinson and a grandson, Ricky Maness.

Wilson H. “Bill” Moyer, 82, widower of Frances Vinson Moyer of 321 Haney Cemetery Road, Union, died at his home Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 after a long illness.

Mr. Moyer was born in Scranton, Pa., Jan. 1, 1923, a son of the late Wilson H. Moyer Sr. and Esther Webb Moyer. Mr. Moyer was a graduate of Easton High School class of 1940 and Churchman Business College in Easton, Pa. He was a retired computer specialist and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Moyer was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Jacqueline M. Adams and husband John S. Adams of the home; a grandson, Tyler John Adams of the home; and a brother, Robert Allan Moyer of Concord, Calif.

Mr. Atkinson was born in Union, Jan. 23, 1936, a son of the late George Herbert “Red” Atkinson and Bertha Mae Eaves Atkinson. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He retired from the Savannah River Site.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Melanie A. Hodge of Ridgeland and Donna A. Mays of Kannapolis, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley Atkinson of Pensacola, Fla., and Frances Bunch of Summerville; two brothers, Earl Atkinson and Jerry C. “Nickey” Atkinson, both of Union; three grandchildren, Eric Davis and Allyson Bradley, both reared in the home, and Dyllan Mays; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. John D. Long III

UNION, SC-- Mr. John D. Long, III, 75, husband of Pat W. Long, of 204 Park Drive, Union, SC, died at his home Tuesday afternoon, December 27, 2005.

Mr. Long was born in Union, SC, February 20, 1930, a son of the late John D. Long and the late Mary Baker Mann and the late Stephen W. Mann, Jr., his step-father. He was a 1947 graduate of Union High School and graduated from University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951. In 1953 Mr. Long received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law and returned to Union, where he practiced law. He served as Union County Solicitor from 1961 to 1964. Mr. Long served in the South Carolina State Senate from 1967 to 1980. He received the Order of the Palmetto in 1978 from then Governor James B. Edwards.

Mr. Long served his country for two years in the 101st Airborne Division and retired as a Lt. Col. Judge Advocate General Corp. U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of the Union Elks Lodge #1321, 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Lou Ann L. Parris of Spartanburg and Mary Jane L. Farr of Union; two sons, Billy Long of Union and Stephen Long of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Toney "Tee" Farr and his wife Stacy of Jonesville and Neely Parris of Spartanburg; two great-grandchildren, Kylee Wallace of Spartanburg and Will Farr of Jonesville; a brother, Mack Long and his wife Nancy of Buffalo; two nephews, Michael Long and Matthew Long, both of Buffalo; and one aunt, Connie Parks of Tucson, AZ.

Mrs. Keasler was born in Waynesville, N.C., Aug. 25, 1932, a daughter of the late Malcolm Robert Johnson and Ida Evans Johnson. She was of the Methodist faith and retired from the Rosemont Plant in Jonesville.

Sanders and husband Charles of Union; five grandchildren, Christopher Hucks, Michael Sanford, Willia Hucks Mull, Hedi Dietz and Trey Hucks; and great-grandchildren, Dillon Cribbs, Blaine Therrell, Blaire Therrell and Ally Sanford. She was predeceased by a son, Tommy Ray Hucks, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held aty 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, in the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brandon Bailey and the Rev. Rob Vernon. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Eddie Ponder, Donald Cohen, Lee Crocker, Chris Brewington, Brad Palmer and Jeff Allison.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
