Wallace W. Keisler, Jr.

Mr. Wallace W. Keisler, Jr., 84, widower of Virginia W. Keisler, of 803 East Main Street, Union, died at his residence Friday, December 31, 2004, at 10:35 p.m. after an extended illness.

Mr. Keisler was born in Santuc, January 27, 1920, the son of the late Wallace Keisler, Sr. and Bernice Gregory Keisler. He was retired from Torrington Company after 21 years and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Keisler was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Terri Woods of Gaffney, and their son Jayden Woods; one sister, Sara K. Berry of the home; two special nieces, Ginger Berry and her son Kailan McWhorter of the home, and Ann Lesesne of Greenville, and her daughter Ashleigh Lesesne of Spartanburg; several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Roger Plemmons. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday night, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.

A special dedication is made to honor the last three Keislers, Mrs. Sara K. Berry, Mrs. Mary Garner, and Mrs. Frances Kelly.

Boyd Knox

Mr. Boyd Knox, 84, widower of Grace Marie Ingle Knox, of 1161 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, died Friday, December 31, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital, after a long illness.

Mr. Knox was born in Cherokee County, February 23, 1920, a son of the late John L. and Nancy Cobb Knox. He was retired from J. P. Stevens, Jonesville Plant and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Mr. Knox was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry K. and George Austin of Union; one son, Darrell Knox of Union; one brother, Olin Knox of Union; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, by Rev. Keith Sweat. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Monday night, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Rev. Otis ODell McCluney

Rev. Otis ODell (Ikie) McCluney, 84, widower of Margaret Wright McCluney of 3635 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, died Sunday, January 2, 2005, at 4:35 a.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Rev. McCluney was born in Chester, August 29, 1920, a son of the late John H. and Marie Yarbrough McCluney. He was a retired Southern Baptist minister, after 25 years in the ministry. He retired in 1982 from Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Campobello, and was currently a member of Putman Baptist Church, where he was honored as Pastor Emeritus. Rev. McCluney attended Chester High School and was a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Army. Rev. McCluney was a member of the first graduating class of the Palmetto Military Academy at Ft. Jackson. He was also a former Master Sgt. with the S. C. National Guard, Chester Unit.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Rick Bell of Chester, Joyce and Jerry Burgess and Ruth and Glenn Sherbert, all of Buffalo; one son and daughter-in-law, Otis ODell (Dale) McCluney, Jr. and wife Frances of McBee; a half-sister, Florence Moses of Greensboro, NC; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Putman Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery with military honors.

The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Monday night from 6-9:00 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to wait the hour of service.

Lonie C. Bailey

Mrs. Lonie Cudd Bailey, 103, of 1817 Jonesville Hwy., Union, widow of John D. Bailey, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at 4:30 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Bailey was born in the Mt. Tabor Community of Union County on February 5, 1901, a daughter of the late William D. Cudd and Frances Jones Cudd. She was a member of the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Bailey was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are one son, William Buster Bailey and wife Helen of Lockhart; a daughter, Muriel B. Cox and husband Leonard of Augusta, GA; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons and Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and will be placed in church at 10:00 a.m. Friday to await the hour of service.

Retired cattle farmer

JONESVILLE — Ernest A. “Shot” Kerr, 68, husband of Shirley Addis Kerr of 207 Gideon St., Jonesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at 1:15 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Kerr was born in Jonesville on July 29, 1936, a son of the late Edgar Harris Kerr and Louise Strong Kerr. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a self-employed retired cattle farmer. Mr. Kerr was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Jonesville Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Mark E. Kerr and wife, Diane, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Bernice Blackwell and Gladys Garrett, both of Spartanburg; and a brother, John Kerr of Spartanburg. Mr. Kerr was predeceased by a brother, Jim Kerr.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Alan West.

The family is at the home, 207 Gideon St., Jonesville and will receive friends at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel Friday night from 7 until 9.

Paul W. Nelson
World War II veteran

Paul W. Nelson, 87, of 354 Beltline Road, Union, widower of Margaret Stroud Nelson, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at 4:30 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital from injuries received in an accident.

Mr. Nelson was born in Union on March 26, 1917, a son of the late Paul Franklin Nelson and Elosie Brock Nelson. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church and was a retired automobile mechanic with Roper Chevrolet of Union. Mr. Nelson was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are two daughters Rita W. Hammond of Lowell, N.C., and Linda N. Hendrix of Little Mountain; two sons, Kenneth A. Nelson of Lexington and Ronald Wesley Nelson of Chapin; 11 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. Mr. Nelson was predeceased by two sons, Gene Paul Nelson and Michael E. Nelson.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at New Life Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clarence Adkins and the Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Howard Cohen, Jerry Cohen, Mike Lockaby, Eddie Stone, Roy Puckett, and Bill Hennesse Members of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class of New Life Baptist Church formed the honorary escort. Charles W. Wilson Sr.
World War II veteran

Charles W. Wilson Sr., 81, of 1385 Sardis Road, Union, husband of Nina Greer Wilson, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Wilson was born in Union on July 31, 1923, a son of the late Calvin Hazekiah Wilson and Pearl Rochester Wilson. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and a member of the Union County Cattleman’s Association and the VFW. Mr. Wilson was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was retired from the U,S. Army Reserve, Company M. Mr. Wilson was retired from Milliken & Co., Sycamore Plant in Clinton.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Beth Wilson Wells and husband Donald L. Wells of Union; two sons, Charles W. Wilson Jr. and wife Jane Wilson and James G. Wilson, all of Union; a sister, Ruth W. Hart of Newberry; and eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Wilson, Charles Wilson III, Beth P. Lancaster, Sam Phillips, Clint Wells, Paul Wells, Catherine Wilson and Jennie Wilson. Mr. Wilson was predeceased by a grandson, Donald L. “Donnie” Wells III.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price.

Grandchildren served as active pallbearers.

Jerry Servern Johnson, 68, of 109 State St., High Shoals, N.C., formerly of Lockhart, died at his residence Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005.

Mr. Johnson was born in Lockhart on Jan. 5, 1937, a son of the late Julius Marion Johnson and Mable Harris Johnson. He was a Baptist. Mr. Johnson attended Lockhart High School and was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member-at-large of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Monica Sue J. Crowe of Cumberland, R.I.; a son, Jerry Steven Johnson of Oakley, Calif..; two sisters, June J. Parrott of Midland, N.C., and Carol J. Shockley of Chester; a bother, James M. Johnson of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Jessica Crowe, John Paul Silva, Christopher Shallies, Jessica Nicole Johnson and Jerry S. Johnson Jr.; and six greatgrandchildren. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by a sister, Helen J. Helms.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill, the Rev. Calvin Smith and the Rev. Robert E. Harris. Burial will be in the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

Active pallbearers will be John Paul Silva, Jerry S. Johnson Jr., Jerry Greenwood, Scott Parrott, Steve Parrott and Joe Shockley.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 1 until 2:45 p.m.

MANNING — Daisy Thompson, 94, died Jan. 11, 2005. Funeral services will be held at Stevens’ Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Thursday in Manning with burial at the Brewington Cemetery.

Mrs. Thompson was born to the late Hampton and Sally Brunson in Clarendon County; she was the widow of Lester Cain Thompson Sr.. She was a life long member of Jordan Methodist Church.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by a son, Lester Thompson Jr. and wife Shirley of Manning; a daughter, Rose Chewning of Union and a sister, Sybil Asaro of Charleston. There are three grandchildren, Tommy Thompson and wife Kathy of Manning, Cathy Thompson of Columbia and Kenneth Chewning of Augusta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Les Thompson of Manning and Brandi Thompson of Clemson.

Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by a grandson, Reggie Chewning and a son-in-law, Reginald Chewning. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Roy, Joe, Scott and Lester Brunson; sisters, Sara Johnson, Alice Brunson and Mattie Thompson.

John Fred Gault

Mr. John Fred Shorty Gault, 85, widower of Rosa Sams Gault, formerly of Brittany Manor Apts., a resident of Oakmont Nursing Center, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Wallace Thomson Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Mr. Gault was born in Kelton, November 3, 1919, a son of the late Douglas Lester and Alma Gault Gault. He was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and a retired manager with Leventis Enterprises. Mr. Gault was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon, a member of the Senior Adult Mens Sunday School class and a member of the Golden Agers Club of the Church. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant.

Surviving are one daughter, Delores G. Wade of Union; two sons, Keith Gault of Union, and Freddie Gault of Union; two sisters, Lennah E. Farr and Bernice G. Lawson, both of Union; five grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, at Morningside Baptist Church, by Rev. Eddie Saxon, Rev. Larry Plyler, and Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

PAULINE — Frances Rena Smith Adams, 51, of 6187 Highway 56, Pauline, died Wednesday Jan. 12, 2005, at 4:45 a.m. in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mrs. Adams was born in Spartanburg on Sept. 22, 1953, a daughter of Cara Nell Smith Smith of Pauline and the late Engelsby Thomas Smith Jr. She was a graduate of Dorman High School and USC-Spartanburg. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and was formerly employed as a nursing assistant with Spartanburg Regional Medial Center.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a sister, Lea Ann S. Sprinkle and husband Jason of Pauline; and one niece.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Friendship Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jack Weaver. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Cousins will serve as active pallbearers.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service.

Pearl Bailey Gault, 86, widow of Walter B. Gault, former residents of Union, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 in Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mrs. Gault was born in Abbington, Va., on Sept. 5, 1918, a daughter of the late Floyd Preston Bailey and Ida Price Bailey. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a son, Donald K. Gault and wife Elizabeth of Winston Salem, N.C.; three grandchildren, Mark Anthony O'Shields, Donna Elizabeth Nelson and Joan Elain Kimmel; and three great-grandchildren, Chase Kimmel, Lain Kimmel and Lee Kimmel. Mrs. Gault was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Ann Gault O’Shields; five brothers, Frank, Clarence, Charlie, Preston and Albert Bailey; and three sisters, Bess B. Brown, Virginia B. Alexander and Lula B. Clark.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Roger Plemmons.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 until 8 at the Hayworth -Miller Funeral Home in Winston Salem and on Sunday from 7 until 8 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vernie Odessa Horne Humphries, 95, widow of W. L. Humphries of 1332 Peach Orchard Road, Union, died at her home on Saturday, January 15, 2005.

Mrs. Humphries was born in Spartanburg, SC, September 21, 1909, a daughter of the late Simon William (Bill) and Ora Blanche Dickson Horne. She was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church and a former member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. Humphries was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member.

Surviving are four daughters, Carolyn McAbee, Melva Lawson, Patricia McAbee and Grace Parkins, all of Union; four sons, Dennis Humphires, Tommy Humphires and wife Dot, Jimmy Humphries, Doug Humphries and wife Mamie Lou, all of Union; two sisters, Lula Raye Hawkins of Union, and Betty Belue of Jonesville; a special niece, Lorena McMurray of Shelby, NC; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Mary Lee McKeown Gault, 86, formerly of North Church St., widow of John Henry Gault, Jr., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at 5:18 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Gault was born in Lockhart April 17, 1918, a daughter of the late Gyden Fraiser McKeown and Fannie Buice McKeown. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken & Co.-Monarch Plant after 41 years.

Surviving are a son, Walter McKeown and wife Mary of Union; two brothers, Paul McKeown of San Diego, Calif., and James McKeown of Wheaton, Md.; three grandchildren, Niel McKeown and wife Wendy of Union, Kelly Siltzer and husband Jay of Fletcher, N.C., and Elizabeth Kingsmore and husband Vic of Union; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gault was predeceased by a sister and brother, Myrtle Crocker and Buford McKeown.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dean Poteat. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7-8:30.

Hilma S. Stonstrom
Retired teacher

Hilma Louise Smith Stonstrom, 90, of 872 Singleton Ridge Road, Conway, formerly of Union, widow of Adolph B. Stonstrom, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at 1:15 a.m. in Conway Medical Center.

Mrs. Stonstrom was born in Mobile, Ala. on Oct. 18, 1914, a daughter of the late Wallace E. Smith and Minnie Lawshee Smith. She was a 1936 graduate of Winthrop College where she earned a BS degree and was a retired teacher with the Union County School System. Mrs. Stonstrom was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen S. Stonstrom of Conway and Kenneth B. Stonstrom of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Stephen S. Stonstrom II of Myrtle Beach, Stacy Stonstrom of Myrtle Beach and Jennifer Edens of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Ethan Stonstrom and Riley Edens; and a loving nephew, Johm M. Alford of Dillon.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Augsburg Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Carroll Robinson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Claude Theodore White, 89, of 602 Brevard Rd., Kings Mountain, NC, widower of Ethel Shirlen Beaty White, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at 9:06 a.m. in Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C. after an extended illness.

Mr. White was born in Union on Oct. 2, 1915, a son of the late Grover White and Lelia Callahan White. He was first married to the late Eula Russell White. Mr. White retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a son, W. W. (Bill) White and wife Annie R. White of Union; a sister, Pearl W. Rebenaker of Spartanburg; three grandsons, Billy Ray White and wife Denise White of Georgia, Kenneth Wayne White and wife Jennifer of Union and Donald White of Flint, Mich.; nine greatgrandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ken Holcombe.

Catherine M. Wright

Mrs. Catherine McAbee Wright, 73, widow of Robert J. Wright, of 108 Lakeview Heights, Union, died Thursday.

Mrs. Wright was born in Union on May 12, 1931, a daughter of the late Griffen McAbee and Ella Mae Harris McAbee. She was a member of the Ottaray Baptist Church and was retired from Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Jo W. Allen, Gayle W. Burris and Lisa W. Peigler, all of Union; two sisters, Jackie M. Green and Margaret M. Gaines, both of Union; two brothers, J. W. McAbee and Boyd McAbee, both of Union; four grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, at Ottaray Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Crocker and Rev. Jerry McKee. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home, 108 Lakeview Heights, Union and will receive friends at the Ottaray Baptist Church Sunday, from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m.

Betty F. Martin

Mrs. Betty Fowler Martin, 79, wife of Daniel Boyce Martin, of 181 Harvey Street, Pacolet, died Thursday, January 20, 2005, at 4:40 p.m. in White Oak Estates in Spartanburg, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Martin was born in Jonesville on November 29, 1925, a daughter of the late Ross Fowler and Lois Mabry Fowler. She was a member of the Pacolet Mills Baptist Church and was formerly employed in the Lunch Room of the Pacolet Middle School.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Melissa M. Lee and husband Darren of Spartanburg; a grandson, Garrison Lee of Spartanburg; three brothers, Benny Fowler, John Fowler and Jimmy Fowler, all of Jonesville; a special niece reared in the home, Vicky Edwards of Pacolet. Mrs. Martin was predeceased by a sister and three brothers.

Mrs. Ruth Wright Woolen, 88, widow of W. Elvin Woolen, formerly of 119 Paula Circle, Union, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 12:50 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Woolen was born in Pacolet, SC on June 29, 1916, a daughter of the late B. B. Wright and Sally Gossett Wright. She was a member of the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, the Winnie Couch Circle and the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class. Mrs. Woolen was a retired Clerk for Milliken & Company, having served for 42 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty W. Harmon and husband Wayne Harmon of Union; a granddaughter, Betsy H. Leach and husband Wey of Greenville; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Fowler of Greenville.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Clayton Price. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Sunday, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.

Lois B. LeMaster

Mrs. Lois Burris LeMaster, formerly of 1200 West Main Street, Union, passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 10:45 p.m. at the Skylyn Wellness Center in Spartanburg, SC, after an extended illness of Alzheimers disease.

She was born in Concord, NC, on August 24, 1921, but was a life-long resident of Union. She was a daughter of the late William Jackson and Sally Florence Huffman Burris. Mrs. LeMaster was the widow of Earle Paul LeMaster of Union.

She is survived by a son, Harley S. LeMaster and his wife Linda of Florence; and a daughter, Linda LeMaster Blackwood and her husband James of Spartanburg. She had four grandchildren, Leigh Thornley and her husband Andrew of Vandenburg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara CA, David LeMaster and his wife Kara, Robert LeMaster and his wife Julie of Florence, and Travis Blackwood and his wife Christy of Spartanburg. She also had six great-grandchildren, Sarah, Abigail and Rachel Thornley of Santa Barbara, CA, Derrick LeMaster of Florence, Zachary and Caleb Blackwood of Spartanburg; and a sister, Florence Brazell and husband Otis of Sylvania, GA. Mrs. LeMaster was predeceased by three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Willie Mae Burris, Adam and Eula Burris and Walter and Claudia Burris.

Mrs. LeMaster was a retired employee of Excelsion Mill, a division of Milliken, for 34 years and also was employed by Duncan Acres Day Care for several years. She was a faithful member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, the Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class and the Louise Brooks Circle.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Tuesday in the parlor of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

The celebration of her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Bailey and Rev. James Blackwood.

The pallbearers will be David LeMaster, Robert LeMaster, Travis Blackwood, Harold LeMaster, Ben Ivey and Larry Brazell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Alzheimers Disease Association, Inc., 110 South Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; and also to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, 417 Rice Avenue, Union, SC 29379.

Mary K. Fowler

Mrs. Mary Keith Gallman Fowler, 61, wife of Julian Harold Fowler of 1425 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at 7:45 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Pacolet, SC, on July 12, 1943, a daughter of Kathryn Brown Gallman of Jonesville, and the late Keith Gallman. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Cecils Business College and was formerly employed as an executive secretary with Kohler Company. Mrs. Fowler was a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Pamela Brown and husband Palmer of Gainesville, FL, and Taramaria Fowler of the home; two sons, Dicky Fowler and wife Kaye, and Hal Fowler and wife Bridget, all of Jonesville; two brothers, Jimmy Wayne Gallman and Mark Gallman, both of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Fowler Brown of Gainesville, FL, Madison Fowler and Bobby Ce Fowler, both of Jonesville; her mother-in-law, Gene Brown Fowler of Jonesville; and a special caregiver, Lee Jefferies of Jonesville.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer and Rev. David Clyburn. Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Lonnie Elmer Ike McMillian, 78, husband of Alice Jordan McMillian, formerly of Buffalo, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, after a brief illness.

Mr. McMillian was born in Buffalo, August 9, 1926, a son of the late Walter Frank and Rebecca Walker McMillian.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Tonya McMillian of Union; one son, Jeffery W. McMillian of Buffalo; three brothers, James Shug McMillian of Buffalo, Edward McMillian of Greenwood, and Jerry McMillian of Whitmire; one sister, Gertrude Caudle of Union.

Mrs. Gladys Grant Jolly, 83, wife of Bobby Joe Jolly, of 121 Grant Road, Union, died at her residence Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at 4:25 p.m., after an extended illness.

Mrs. Jolly was born in Franklin County, Georgia on June 3, 1921, a daughter of the late Joseph G. Grant, Sr. and Virgie Greer Grant.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Geraldine Grant and Jenni Davis, both of Union; a son, Allen David Walters of Union; a sister, Hattie G. Seymore of Union; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. David W. Bogan Sr.

Mr. David William Bogan, Sr., 75, husband of Vyral R. Bogan, of 1059 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, died Thursday morning, in Mary Black Hospital.

Mr. Bogan was born in West Springs Community of Union County on January 5, 1930, a son of the late Fred T. Bogan and Pearl Lawson Bogan. He was a member of the Bogansville United Methodist Church and was owner of The Car Lot in Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Wanda R. Lemons and husband Ray, and Cheryl R. Henderson and husband Rick, all of Jonesville, and Lisa B. Tidey of Union; a son, David William Bogan, Jr. of Spartanburg; a sister, Myrtle Fleming of Jonesville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.

Mary Alice Williams Cannon, 61, widow of Claude “Jack” Cannon of 251 Old English Road, Union, died at her residence Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at 10:30 p.m.

Mrs. Cannon was born in Sevierville, Tenn., on Nov. 11, 1943, a daughter of Bessie Sutton Canupp of Union and the late Dallas Williams. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School, having perfect attendance for her entire school career. She was a member of Calvary Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Patty Gregg and husband Bobby of Spartanburg and Teresa Moss and husband Rocky of Hickory Grove; two sons, Jackie Cannon and Lindsey Cannon and wife Debra, all of Union; a sister, Edna W. Porter of Chester; and a brother, Ronald Williams of Lockhart. Mrs. Cannon was pre-deceased by two brothers, Jimmy Williams and Eugene Williams. She is survived by 12 grandchildren: Travis and Kayla Sullivan, Holli Lewis, Brad and Brandi Moss, Jackie Cannon Jr., Danny Cannon, Christie Wilburn, Kelly Heatherly, Jeff Cannon, Joseph Cannon and Blake Harris; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Retired from Union Motors

BUFFALO — Emmie Allison Brooks, 89, formerly of Buffalo, widow of Edmond H. Brooks, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at 10 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mr. Brooks was born in Cherokee County on March 31, 1915, a daughter of the late C.Y. Allison and Viola Byars Allison. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired office manager of Union Motors and was formerly employed with United Merchants-Buffalo Plant. Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church, a former member of the church choir, and advisor for the Girl’s Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Brooks was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Chris E. Brooks and wife Katherine of Aiken; three grandchildren, Brandon Brooks and wife Kimberly of Nashville, Tenn., Gwendolyn B. Howell and husband John of Savannah, Ga., and Bert Barrett Jr. and wife Michelle of Savannah, Ga.; six greatgrandchildren and one greatgreat-granddaughter. Mrs. Brooks was predeceased by a daughter, Connie B. Daughtey, four brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Annie Ashford Hicks, 91, of 200 Highland Drive, widow of Carl E. Hicks Sr., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005 at 9:50 p.m. in Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Hicks was born in Union on March 16, 1913, a daughter of the late Elliott R. Ashford and Eunice Mae Scott Ashford. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class, also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Hicks was formerly employed with United Merchants Union and Buffalo plants and had been a beautician at A&M Beauty Shop.

Surviving are a son, Carl Errol Hicks Jr., and wife, Sammie of Irmo; a brother, Jimmy Ashford of Greenville and a sister-in-law, with whom she made her home, Margaret Ashford of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Duncan Acre United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Bailey. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Katherine S. Lawson
County’s first female deputy sheriff

Katherine Sanders Lawson, 96, widow of Fred Oliver Lawson Sr., formerly of 513 Thompson Blvd., Union, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at 11:05 p.m. in White Oak Manor in Newberry.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union County on Aug. 22, 1908, a daughter of the late Edgar Eugene Sanders and Julia Alverson Sanders. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Union. She was retired from the Union County Sheriff ’s Office after 38 years service. Mrs. Lawson was appointed in 1962 as the first female deputy sheriff in Union County. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a grandson, Steve Brooks Jeter of Union; a special nephew, Dr. E.M. Hughes of Newberry and other nieces and nephews; two great-granddaughters and very special friends, Linda Tucker, Clydie Linder, Linda Jenkins, Judy Bobo, Susan Weeden and Mollie Taylor. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Fred O. Lawson Jr. and a sister, Jean Elizabeth Hughes.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory.
