Elsie Thomas Malpass, 95, of 204 Spring St., widow of Will Talley Malpass, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 in Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Malpass was born in Clifton July 18, 1910, the daughter of the late J.B. and Pearl Morrow Thomas. She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was a member of Crestview Baptist Church, formerly Westside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.

Survivors are two sons, Willie Malpass of Charleston and Larry Malpass of Union; two sisters, Lois Rice of Charlotte and Frances Allen of Columbia; a brother, Theodore Thomas of Gastonia, N.C. ; nine grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Harold Malpass.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Gerald Eaves. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The members of Mrs. Malpass’s Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the chapel at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

Frank B. Justice, 75, husband of Elizabeth Moore Justice, of 241 Justice Road, Buffalo, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005 at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Justice was born in Union, March 10, 1930, a son of the late Milas and Dolly Franklin Justice. He was the retired owner and operator of Justice Tile & Carpet and after retirement was a security guard with Security Forces. Mr. Justice was a former member of the S C. National Guard and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jackie Richardson and husband Henry of Buffalo; a granddaughter, Jackie Kirkland and husband Shane of Prosperity; two grandsons, Justun Richardson and wife Kellie of Union and Jeff Richardson and wife Melinda of Buffalo; four great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons; seven sisters, Dora Boyles of Lexington, Kathleen Ivey, Bernice Falls, Alma Justice, Alice Wilfred, Jessie McClure and Dianne Justice, all of Union; and a brother, James Burton Justice of Buffalo. Mr. Justice was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ellen Justice; two sisters, Willie Justice and Viola Williams; and two brothers, Wylie Justice and Bryant Justice.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Justice’s nephews and great-nephews and Rickie Barnes will serve as active pallbearers.

SPARTANBURG — Vera N. Goudelock, 92, of White Oak Estates, 400 Webber Road, Spartanburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005.

Ms. Goudelock was born in Buffalo, June 30, 1913, a daughter of the late John Hamlet Goudelock and May Sumner Goudelock. She was an administrative assistant to the Law Revision Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., from 1947 until her retirement in June of 1978. Ms. Goudelock became a resident of Spartanburg in 1990.

Surviving are a nephew, Michael Bartosh and wife, Joyce, of Spartanburg; a great niece, Mary Katherine Bartosh and a great nephew, Matthew Warren Bartosh. Ms. Goudelock was predeceased by her sister, Ena Goudelock Bartosh.

Graveside services will be held at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Robert Emory.

Visitation will be held tonight from 7 until 8 at Holcombe Funeral Home.

BUFFALO — Barbara Joan “Bobbie” Justice, 71, wife of James D. “Burt” Justice of 167 Riley Road, Buffalo, died unexpectedly Monday at Wallace Thompson Hospital. Mrs. Justice was born in Union, July 19, 1934, a daughter of the late Willie and Gertrude Elrod Coleman. She was a 1952 graduate of Union High School and was retired from Oakmont of Union where she served as food services manager. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Union County Senior Citizens and a volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kim Smith and husband Johnny of Boiling Springs; two sons, Scott Justice and wife Nora of Buffalo and Todd Justice of Union; three sisters, Brenda Wells and Nell Ponder, both of Buffalo and Helen Kelly of Pantego, Texas; three brothers, Maxie Coleman and Harold Coleman, both of Buffalo, and Ronald Coleman of Wellford; four granddaughters, Ashley and Amber Justice of Buffalo, Katie Justice of Union and Blair Blackstone of Roebuck; a grandson, Carson Blackstone of Boiling Springs; a special niece, Tracey Wells West of Lexington.

NEWBERRY— Victoria Moore Sherbert of 145 Sutton Lane, Newberry, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005 at the Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. Mrs. Sherbert was the widow of Sammie Austin Sherbert and was formerly of Union.

Mrs. Sherbert was born in Laurens, the daughter of the late John Melton and Flora Albert Nix Moore. She graduated Converse College in 1938 and attended Spartanburg Jr. College. Mrs. Sherbert was a retired school teacher after 40 years having taught in Union, Spartanburg and Greenville county schools. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union.

Survivors are a daughter, Susanne S. Prince of Union; a son, Terence “Terry” Sherbert of the home; a brother, John H. Moore of Falls Church, Va.; four grandchildren, Gayle Sherbert of Whitmire, Al Sherbert of Pageland, Jennifer Howell of Union and Stewart Prince of Columbia; eight great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Paula Harrison of the home.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory.

Shelia Collier Bogan, age 45 of 197 Oakland Road, Union, SC died Monday, November 7, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following a battle with cancer.

Ms. Bogan was born in Whitmire, SC November 12, 1959, a daughter of the late Charles E. Collier and Carolyn Young Binkley and her husband Al of Woodruff, SC. She was a graduate of Union High School and York Technical College. She was retired from Whitten Center in Clinton, SC where she held many positions during her employment. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her mother and step-father are: two daughters; Amber White and Megan Mathis of the home, a sister; Gina Ballard of Woodruff, two brothers; Jeffery Collier of Woodruff and Robin Collier of Clover, SC, two aunts; Jackie Hembree of Gastonia, NC and Judy Hatchell and husband Bubba of Whitmire, four uncles; Floyd Collier, Gordon Collier, Gary Collier and Steve Collier all of Whitmire, two nieces; Julia Ballard and Kelsey Collier-Barfield, three nephews; Jamie Ivey, Robin Collier, Jr., and Curtis Collier. Also surviving are her former husband and dear friend, Doug Bogan of Union and special friends Amy and Kenneth Painter. She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Doris Davis Hogue and her paternal grandmother, Beulah Collier.

Mr. Clarence Ray Ham

Mr. Clarence Ray Ham age 71 of 320 Sunset Blvd., Clinton, SC widow of Elizabeth Colleen Allen Ham died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Hospice House Care of the Piedmont.

Mr. Ham was born in Union, SC June 17, 1934 the son of the late Jesse Ham, Sr and Anna Martin Ham. He was a 1953 graduate of Union High School and attended Alabama Christian College. Mr. Ham was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He retired from Ingle’s Grocery Store and was a member of the Church of Christ in Clinton.

Survivors are: three daughters; Lisa Measamer of Anderson, SC, Mary Jane Dilleshaw of Clinton and Anna Rogers of Laurens, two sons: Chris Ham of Prosperity and Ray Ham of Clinton, two brothers; Gary Hamm and Jesse Ham, Jr. both of Union, twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Sarah Frances Jones Gault, 79, of 1207 Brown’s Creek Church Road, Union, widow of Ernest Wendell “Bud” Gault, Jr., died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005.

Mrs. Gault was born in Gaffney, Feb. 17, 1926, a daughter of the late Albert “Sam” Jones and Naomie “Oamie” Quinn Jones. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters; Jane G. Ray of the home, Ann McKuen of Prescott, Mich., and Darlene Calander of Flint, Mich.; two sons; James R. Tesner of Union and Edward W. Gault of Prescott, Mich.; and a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

JONESVILLE — Christopher Todd Austin, 27, of 218 Proctor Road, Jonesville, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005.

Mr. Austin was born in Spartanburg, Nov. 13, 1978, the son of Bruce F. and Bonnie Austin Davis of Buffalo. He was a 1997 graduate of Union High School and was employed with Dollar General at the Jonesville distribution center. Mr. Austin was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and many sports.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his fiancee, Rhonda Harris of the home, three sisters, Crystal Clark of Woodruff, April Hogan of Union and Lisa Davis of Buffalo; one brother, Randy Davis of Buffalo; maternal grandmother, Mertice Austin, maternal great-grandmother, Violet Ivey and an adopted grandmother, Mary Harris Vinson all of Union; two special cousins, Brandy Austin of Jonesville and T.J. Gault of Union; an aunt, Kim Austin of Union and a number of other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Mr. Austin was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Franklin (F.D.) Austin, his paternal grandparents, Jesse and Ozella Davis and his maternal greatgrandfather, Colie Ivey.

Born in Bolivar, Tenn., Feb. 25, 1933, Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late John Massey Motley and Myrtle Nancy Meeks Motley. She and her husband operated an inhome day care for many years.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Bennett Justice and her husband, Tim, of Jonesville; a son, John A. Hawkins and his wife Joan of Richland, N.C.; a sister, Lois Stamey of Hornsby, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Mitchell Justice and Nathan Justice, both of Jonesville, Tina Simpson, Holly Crede and Scott Hawkins, all of North Carolina; and five greatgrandchildren, Christopher Simpson, Travis Simpson, Taylor Crede, Kyle Crede and Franki Crede, all of North Carolina.

George Chandler Chambers, 82, husband of Mary Ellen Inman Chambers, 212 Seigler Road, Union, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2005, after an extended illness.

Mr. Chambers was born in Buffalo, July 15, 1923, a son of the late James Norman Chambers, Sr. and Anna Mitchell Chambers. He graduated from Union High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the European Theater during World War II, and later with the National Guard Union Unit. He was retired from Cone Mills Carlisle Finishing Plant, and was a member of Woodmen of the World and Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kathy Jo Chambers Lancaster and her husband Mark, of Buffalo; four sisters, Beuna Chambers Inman and husband James Hay Fant Inman Sr., and Frances Chambers both of Union, Gwendolyn Chambers Fisher and husband Charles Fisher and Sylvia Chambers Reynolds both of Buffalo, two stepgrandchildren, Eliotte Kelly Lancaster and Matthew Adam Lancaster both of Union. Mr. Chambers was predeceased by a sister and four brothers, Betty Chambers Rose, Loyd Chambers, Walter Chambers, John Chambers and James N. Chambers, Jr.

Virginia Edwards Smith, 79, 138 Pine St., Buffalo, widow of Boyd Smith, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Born in Jonesville, Va., Nov. 13, 1926, she was a daughter of the late William N. and Maude Duncan Edwards. She attended schools in Virginia and retired from Ottaray Mill. Mrs. Smith was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Rosa Rogers and husband Ronald of Roebuck; a grandson, Christopher Scott of Robuck; a brother, George Edwards and wife Eddis of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Ethel Thompson and husband Loyd of Union; two sisters-in-law, Lillie May Eubanks and Evelyn Ford, both of Union, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by two sisters, Rosa Hodges and Myrtle DePew.

Mrs. Suttles was born in Union, Dec. 10, 1916, a daughter of the late George W. and Alice Willard Henderson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Union Church of Christ.

Surviving are a sister, Paulette H. Johnson of Trinity, N.C., and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Suttles was predeceased by a sister and four brothers: Betty H. Eubanks, G. W. Henderson, Jr., Otis Henderson, Ralph Henderson and Robert Henderson.

Theodosia “Theo” Wilson Dunbar, 89, 200 Veterans Drive, Union, widow of Means Curtis Dunbar, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Dunbar was born in Union, Nov. 11, 1916, a daughter of the late Robert Jefferson Wilson, Sr. and Leatha Gregory Wilson. She graduated Union High School and retired from the Union County School system after 43 years of service. Mrs. Dunbar was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Busy Bee Garden Club, the Union County Retired Teachers Association and was an avid bridge player. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Sally D. Atwater of Washington, D.C.; a son, Curtis Means Dunbar and his wife, Sonja, of Union; six grandchildren, Sara Lee Atwater of Washington, D.C., Ashley Paige Atwater of Boston, Mass., Sally Theodosia “T” Atwater of Washington, D.C., Susan Ellen Dunbar of Union, Benjamin Means Dunbar of Union and Daniel Curtis Dunbar of Kingsport, N.Y.; and a brother-in-law, John English Heath of Union. Mrs. Dunbar was predeceased by a sister and brother, Sara Martha Wilson Heath and Robert Jefferson Wilson Jr.

JONESVILLE — Frances Floyd Martin, 85, 109 Gault Street, Apt. 123, Jonesville, widow of John Paul Martin, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at her home.

Mrs. Martin was born in Union, June 6, 1920, a daughter of the late Jack and Essie Lipsey Floyd. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from J.P. Stevens, Jonesville and also Milliken & Co. Mrs. Martin was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Lottie Moon Circle. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters, Jackie Martin and Susan Martin and a granddaughter, Ashley Martin all of Jonesville, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Willie, Herbert and Johnny Floyd.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and the Rev. Joe Stover. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews.

Bruce Hix Lawson, 58, formerly of the Putman Community of Buffalo, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Lawson was born in Union, Feb. 11, 1947, a son of Pearl Mitchell Lawson of Buffalo and the late Foster Hix Lawson. He was a graduate of Union High School and had attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Lawson retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Louise James Smith, 91, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, widow of R. Wallace Smith, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union, March 31, 1914, a daughter of the late Joseph and Hannah Faucett James. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Homemaker’s Sunday School Class and a former Sunday School teacher. She retired from Harry From’s Store after 40-plus years of service. Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter Ann Smith Kimbrell of Union; two granddaughters, Cindy Fore and husband Steve and Lou Kimbrell, both of Union, two great-grandchildren, Jamie Fore of Spartanburg and Jenna Lea Fore of Union.

JONESVILLE — Mary Ann Floyd Smith, 69, 109 Gault Ave., Apt. 113, C Building, Jonesville, died at her home at an extended illness. Mrs. Smith was the widow of Haywood Turner.

Mrs. Smith was born in Union on Feb. 2, 1936, a daughter of the late William and Gwendolyn Martin Floyd. She was a member of the Church of God and was a homemaker.

Survivor are a daughter, Wendy Smith of the home; a son, Douglas Turner of Florida; two sisters, Rebecca Garrett of Pacolet and Jean Floyd of Jonesville; six brothers, Tommy Floyd of Gaffney, Charles Floyd of Jonesville, Bobby Floyd of Kershaw, J.C. Floyd of Greenville, Billy Floyd of Pacolet and Robert Floyd of Union; six grandchildren, Chad Booker, Joshua Turner, Cody Turner, Cortney Smith, Kallie Turner and Jessica Cartwright; and two great-grandchildren, Zack Booker and Haley Booker. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a son, Michael Turner.

OCALA, Fla. — James C. “Jay” Wallace Jr., 13, of Ocala, Fla., died Nov. 4, 2005 in Ocala.

Jay was born in Seneca on Feb. 25, 1991, the son of James “Jim” Wallace Sr. and Bobbie Kelly Wallace of Ocala.

Jay was a student at West Port Middle School. He played the alto saxophone for the West Port Middle School Band. His enjoyments included skate boarding, basketball, football, fishing, computer games, cooking and grilling. He wrote poetry and was an excellent artist.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Gwendolyn Page Wallace of Ocala; his paternal grandparents, David and Marion Wallace of Mountain Rest, S.C. and his maternal grandparents, Joe and Claudia Kelly of Union.

Robert A. “Coot” Horne, 85, of 2624 Lockhart Highway, Union, widower of Eva Jones Horne, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Horne was born in Kelton, Feb. 16, 1920, a son of the late Frank and Nannie Vanderford Horne. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mr. Horne was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

Surviving are: three sisters, Juanita Reynolds and Sara Rogers, both of Union, and Margaret Knox of Jonesville; two brothers, Lewis Horne of Union and Franklin D. Horne of Summerville; a granddaughter, Darby Horne Gann of Union; and two grandsons, Lance Barron Gann and Logan Evin Gann, both of Union. Mr. Horne was predeceased by two sons, Barron Ray Horne and Wayne Horne, three sisters, Pearl Thompson, Annie Mae Thompson and Nellie Farr; and four brothers, Forest Horne, Johnny Harold Horne, Woodrow Horne and Pete Horne.

Myrtle E. Webber, 96, formerly of Spruce St., Union, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005 in Lexington Medical Center Extended Care Facility.

Miss Webber was born in Sedalia, Aug. 24, 1909, a daughter of the late Lowry and Maggie Estes Webber. She was retired from the U.S. Army Materials Command in Washington, D.C. Miss Webber was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and the Pearl Johnson Women of Missions where she taught a Bible study class for 15 years.

Surviving are a sister, Christine W. Childress of Lexington; a brother, Lewis W. Webber of Gilbert and a number of nieces and nephews.

Harold Edward Eubanks Sr., 76, of 728 Hawkins Road, Union, widower of Betty Sutton Eubanks, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Eubanks was born in Union on Dec. 6, 1928, a son of the late Fred T. and Mary Lou Cabaniss Eubanks. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, a former deacon and Sunday School teacher, and was retired from Torrington & Co.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Monroe of the home and Deborah Haney of Union; a son, Harold E. Eubanks Jr. and wife Janet of Union; three sisters, Gloria Eubanks Pierce of Charleston, Patricia Eubanks Hollingsworth and husband Henry of Union and Sylvia Eubanks Robinson and husband Alvin of Union; seven grandchildren, Monica Quinn and husband Walter, Christie Parker and husband Allen, Chad Monroe and wife Emma Curtis Eubanks, Ed Eubanks and wife Kim, Tina Eubanks and Mike Eubanks; and 12 great-grandchildren, Mallerie Quinn, Bailey Quinn, Dustin Ochiltree, Brett Ochiltree, Gabriel Parker, Alayna Monroe, Claire Monroe, Derrian Vaughan, Hunter Vaughan, Corbin Eubanks, Isaac Eubanks and Morgan Eubanks.. Otis Albert “Buck” Gault, 91, formerly of 101 Halden St., Union, widower of Mary Nell Godshall Gault, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Gault was born in Union on March 31, 1914, a son of the late James Oliver and Fannie Mae Crosby Gault. He was a 1933 graduate of Union High School and was owner and operator of Gault’s Grocery. Mr. Gault was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are: a daughter, Susan Gault Ashmore of Ridgeway; a son, Ned A. Gault of South Carolina; a brother, Harold R. Gault of Spartanburg; and a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Mr. Gault was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers, Annie “Biddie” G. Chick, Edith Gault, James “Jimmy” W, Gault, Ernest Gault and Leo Gault.

DECATUR,, Ga. — Dorothy Fredrick Brown Bailey, 85, of Decatur, Ga., passed away at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005 at Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Decatur.

A native of Pacolet, Mrs. Bailey was a daughter of the late B. Fred and Ruth White Brown. She was a graduate of Pacolet High School and Limestone College. She had taught school at Pacolet Mills, Pacolet and Decatur. She had been director of the kindergarten at First Baptist Church of Decatur. Mrs. Bailey's husband of 61 years, J.C. Bailey died in June, 2005 at Beverly Manor Nursing Home.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Freddy and Linda Bailey of Decatur; a sister, Carolyn Brown of Pacolet; two brothers, Pete Brown and wife Barbara of Pacolet and Bobby Brown and wife Eugenia of Union; several nieces and nephews.

Her body was donated to Emory University Medical College as was her husband’s.

Memorial services will be held at Decatur First Baptist Church at a later date.

Faye F. Mitchell

Faye Farr Mitchell, 81, of 478 Hawkins Road, widow of Edward Mitchell died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005 in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Union on March 3, 1924, a daughter of the late J.W. Farr and Bessie Broome Farr. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church where she remained active as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Mitchell was retired from Conso Products.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia M. Lawson and husband Larry of Union; two sons, Vick Mitchell and wife Carol of Union and Roger Mitchell and wife Lois of Greenwood; a sister, Joyce Rector of Union; six grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by a grandson, two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Larry Padgett and the Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Steve Hyder, Maurice Hyder, Ralph Owings, Robert Pridemore, J.B. Lane, Eddie Rector, Bill Stoner and Mike Farr.

BUFFALO — Donnie Joe Reynolds, 67, of 2705 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Reynolds was born in Buffalo on April 26, 1938, a son of the late Otis and Pauline Wiley Reynolds. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mr. Reynolds was a dedicated member of the AA where he served as treasurer and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Lynn Reynolds Thornton of Inman and Lora Reynolds of Union; a son, Lonnie A. Reynolds of Union; a sister, Emma Ruth Lopez of Spartanburg; and three grandchildren, Brittany Thornton, Kyleigh Lamb and McKenzie Thornton. Mr. Reynolds was predeceased by two brothers, Billy Reynolds and Jack Sumner.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at Pacolet Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook with military honors. Active pallbearers will be Benji Sorrells, George Parks, Terry O’Brian, William Hovis, Michael Sorrells and Eddie Burkholder.

Furman L. Fendley

UNION, SC-- Furman Lester Fendley was born May 16, 1918, in Westminster, SC. He passed peacefully on November 30, 2005, after an extended illness.

Furman served in the SC House of Representatives for eight years. He served on the State Highway Commission for eight years, and was chairman for one term. The four lane highway from Union to Spartanburg, Hwy. 176, was named the Furman L. Fendley Highway because of his dedication to this project.

Furman served on the SC Farm Bureau State Board for 30 years, and received the Distinguished Service Award. He was past Chairman of the State Land Resource Commission, past President of the SC Rural Water Commission, and was a member of the SC Beef Board. He was past President of the Union County Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Union County Carnegie Library Board, past Chairman of the Union Soil and Water Conservation District, and a member of the Provident Community Bank Board of Directors for 25 years. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church of Union, where he was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years, Deacon and past Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and served on the Sanctuary Building Committee.

Furman served in the U. S. Navy on the U.S.S. Dickerson in World War II. He survived an attack from a Japanese suicide-plane that sank his ship. A number of his fellow crew members were killed and Furman and some of his fellow mates were rescued from the Pacific Ocean after being stranded in the water for more than eight hours.

Furman is survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy S. Whitney of Union, SC; a sister, Louise and husband Bill Harris of Westminister, SC; a brother, Dan and wife Wilma Fendley of Westminister, SC; a brother, Raymond Fendley of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Jimbo and wife Anita Whitney, and their children Eva, Bo, Ann and Julia of Union; a nephew, Billy and wife Patsy Whitney and their son Will of Union and daughters Emily Whitney of Greenville, SC and Louisa Whitney of Stamford, Connecticut; a niece, Dorothy Mobley Jones and her son Ronald Foster Fendley Jones of Columbia, SC; a nephew, Johnny and wife Carolyn Harris of Westminister, SC; a niece, Susan and husband Mike Head of Westminister, SC; a niece, Mary and husband Cris Watkins of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Alan Fendley of Westminister, SC; twin nieces, Karen Craig and Sharon Fendley of Westminister, SC; a nephew, Douglas and wife Linda Fendley of Westminister, SC; a niece, Sherill and husband David Callahan of Indiana; and a niece, Janet and husband Clay Greer of Westminister, SC; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the home of Mr. Fendley, 3809 Whitmire Hwy., Union, SC.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 2, 2005 at Hebron Baptist Church of Union, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
