Regina Ann Jennings, 25, of 214 Pickle Springs Road, Cowpens, died Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Jennings was born in Union Dec. 7, 1979. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving are: a son, Dustin Keith Cromer of Cowpens; her parents, Jack Jennings Jr. and Janet Warren Jennings of Union and Donna Davis Byers and Jerry Lee Byers of Cowpens; seven sisters, Angela J. Mattox of Chesnee, Katie Byers of Cowpens, Christie Byers of Florida, Misty Byers of Texas, Denise Woody of North Carolina, Shelley Lawson and Shanna Bailey, both of Union; and three brothers, Stacey Byers of Ellenboro, N.C., Timmy Byers of North Carolina and Brian Byers of Union; and her paternal step-grandmother, Betty B. Warren of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at New Life Baptist Church in Union conducted by the Rev. Clarence Adkins. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Jennings, Sidney Lawson, Michael Sanford, Joe McGeady, Trey Blackwell and Barry Atkins.

Members of the Dean Brown Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

Mr. David Clarence Garner, age 56, husband of Linda Callahan Garner of 735 Old Buncombe Road, Union, SC died Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Garner was born July 24, 1949, the son of Valerie Conley Garner of Union, SC and the late Otis C. "Bob" Garner. Mr. Garner attended Union County Schools and retired from the Draper Corporation. He was a member of a special group of hunting and fishing friends around his home and was a member of Padgetts Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are: two daughters; Tammy G. Jones and husband Tony and April G. Wells and husband Donavan, two sisters; Barbara S. Palmer and husband Ed and Janice G. Owens and husband Ricky, five grandchildren; Danielle Jones, Dylan Sellers, Dustin Wells, Dalton Wells and Dakota Wells all of Union. Mr. Garner was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth "Cotton" Garner.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 7, 2005 at Padgetts Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wofford Carlisle Henderson
Union, SC

Mr. Wofford Carlisle Henderson, age 82, husband of Georgia Raines Henderson of 400 West Hillcrest Avenue, Union, SC died early Sunday morning, October 9, 2005 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Carlisle was well known by most as "The Coffee Sipper".

Mr. Henderson was born in Whitney, SC May 4, 1923, a son of the late Cora Foster Henderson and Tom Henderson. He was a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and served as choir director for churches in Gulf Port, Mississippi, Caroleen, N.C., Victor Baptist Church, Greer, SC, Buffalo Baptist Church, Buffalo, SC, Salem Baptist Church and Covenant Baptist Church both in Union, SC. While serving at Buffalo Baptist Church, Carlisle began working in the Human Resource Department for Buffalo Plant of United Merchants and Manufacturing.

Following his career in textiles, Carlisle began full time association with Radio Station WBCU as an announcer and salesman. As the station’s morning announcer he affectionately became known as "The Coffee Sipper". Mr. Henderson was also well known to the Union and Spartanburg communities as a licensed funeral director having worked for Floyd Mortuaries in Spartanburg and Union and also Edgar, Brown, Bailey Funeral Home and Brown Bolton Jolly Mortuary in Union.

Mr. Henderson was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Union and served on the Boards of Union Services, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and was a Mason. For many years he taught CPR and First Aide for the Red Cross. For his years of service to mankind and particularly his ability to raise money for many different charities, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by former Governor Jim Hodges March 23, 2001.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: a son; Thomas W. Henderson and wife Susan of the home, two grandchildren; Jennifer M. Henderson of James Island, SC and Jonathan Wofford Henderson and wife Betsy of Union, a sister; Cora Russo of Boston, Mass. and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Henderson was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters; T.F, Horace, Albert, Billy, Jim and Charles Henderson, Adelaide Henderson, Louise Washburn and Hazle Cook.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at First Baptist Church, Union, SC conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Mr. James William "Jay" Howell age 83, husband of Inez Knox Morris Howell of 206 Third Street, Ottaray Community, Union, SC died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 in Laurens County Healthcare in Clinton, SC.

Mr. Howell was born in Union, SC November 15, 1921, the son of the late Lawrence and Arrie Howell Blakely and was reared in the home of his aunt, Mamie Howell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in WWII. Mr. Howell was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and Wal-Mart in Union. Mr. Howell was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and served an an usher. He was a member of the Union County Amateur Ham Radio Club and a member of the Union County CB Club where his handle was "Hammy". He was also an avid photographer and steel guitar player having played with many well know artist throughout his career.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: a daughter; Patricia Prather of Union, two sons; Larry Morris and Wayne Morris both of Union, two sisters; Elizabeth Belue and Doris Jennings both of Union, four grandchildren; Beverly Morris, Melanie Walker both of Union, Zane Morris of Lexington, SC and Jason Prather of Boston, Ma., a number of great-grandchildren, neices and nephews.

Miss Mary Robinson of 209 Haas Street, Union, SC died Monday, October 10, 2005 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Miss Robinson was the daughter of the late James and Orrie Sanders Robinson. She was a lifelong member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Jim Smith Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Janie Kathleen "Kit" Alexander Ward age 78, widow of John L. Ward, Sr., of 2653 Lockhart Highway, Union, SC died Monday, October 10, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Ward was born in Union, SC May 20, 1927 the daughter of the late Bryson and Ollie Moore Alexander. She graduated Union High School, retired from Milliken & Company and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Dot Crocker Sunday School Class. Mrs. Ward was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors are: a daugher; Cheryl George and husband Randy, two sons; Ronald D. Ward and wife Brenda and John L. Ward, Jr. and wife Susan all of Union, three grandchildren; Lauren Ward of Union, Rhonda Waddle and husband Ben of Simpsonville, and Denise Vanderford and great-grandchildren Kayla and Caleb Vanderford of Union. Mrs. Ward was predeceased by a granddaughter Casi Kathleen George.

Myrtle Lucille Inman Gregory, 86, widow of Colie L. Gregory, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Union, March 12, 1919, a daughter of the late Will and Mae Ham Inman. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Gregory was first married to the late Wilson Estes and then to the late W.A. Mitchell.

Surviving are a daughter, Marie E. Duncan of Jonesville; a sister, Evadell Brewington of Union; a brother, Faye “Bud” Inman of Union; a step-daughter, Mary Del Eubanks of Union; three step-sons, Bobby Mitchell of Mt. Pleasant, Jimmy Mitchell of Aiken and Wylie Mitchell of Elberton, Ga.; a son-in-law, Harold D. Hooper Sr., of West Columbia; five grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a daughter, Gladys E. Hooper.

Jimmie L. Carter Sr., 75, widower of Joyce M. Carter, of 306 W. Main St.,, Union, formerly of Lockhart, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005 in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Carter was born in Lockhart, the son of the late Camak and Dakota Wilson Carter. He graduated Lockhart School and was retired from Ratex Mills in Marion. Mr. Carter was a member of the Lockhart United Methodist Church and was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda C. Rumsey and husband James “Butch” of Surfside Beach; Mary Huffman and husband Shannon of Buffalo and Sylvia Jean Carter of Clinton; a son, Jimmie L. “Butch” Carter Jr. and wife Sheila of Lockhart; a sister, Peggy C. Elliott Fuller “Freight Train” Smith, 84, husband of Virginia Holcombe Smith, of 113 Broad St., Union, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, July 6, 1921, the son of the late Henry B. and Pauline Bailey Smith. He was retired as a deputy sheriff of Union County after 30 years service. A veteran of the US. Army and the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II. He was a life time member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75 and American Legion Post #22. Mr. Smith was also a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to his wife are a daughter, Susan S. Ledford and husband Billy of Union; a son, Eddie M. Smith and wife Andrea of Union; a brother, James E. Smith of Union; two granddaughters, Jennifer Ledford and Hillary Smith, both of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. World War II veteran

Clyde Huber Ijames of 296 Meansville Road, Union, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Ijames was born in Mocksville, N,C., Aug. 8, 1917, the son of the late Clyde H. Ijames Sr. and Ruth Stenhouse Ijames. Mr. Ijames was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served in World War II. He was retired from Milliken & Co. Trucking Division. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Union Elks Club. Mr. Ijames was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and had been a carrier with The Union Daily Times for a number of years.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Peggy) Walker of Union and Mrs. Bruce (Pat) McDade of Columbia; two brothers, William Ijames of Vista, Calif., and Robert Ijames of Florida; five grandchildren, Terry Walker and wife Laura of Ridge Springs, Robin Walker and wife Meg of Moore, Chris Walker and wife Sandy of Asheville, Dale Farmer and wife Sharon of Burlington, Conn. and Mack McDade and wife, Shelley, of Anderson; a granddaughter, Lisa McDade of Mt. Pleasant; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Walker, Adam Walker and Walker McDade. Mr. Ijames was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and Grady Farmer and a grandson, David Farmer.

Donna Beth Moss, 46, wife of Randall Gregory of 662 Strother Road, Union, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Ms. Moss was born in Union, April 25, 1959, a daughter of the late Wilsie and Elizabeth Grady Moss. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Ms. Moss was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a niece, Avagail Hendrix of Union; a nephew, Darrell Moss of Stockton, Calif.; two aunts, Betty Roberts and husband Billy of Union and Willie Mae Patterson and husband Charles of Columbia; two uncles, Lewis Grady and Jack Moss, both of Union; mother and father in-law, Daisy and Ralph Gregory of Union; two great nieces and two great nephews.

Fletcher J. Rhymer, 97, of 1011 Monarch Highway., Union, widower of Mary Breakfield Rhymer, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005.

Mr. Rhymer was born in Alexander, N.C., July 6, 1908, the son of the late Z.H. and Ella Alexander Rhymer. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, after 52 years service in the Preventative Maintenance Department and was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.

Survivors are a daughter, Geraldine Bybee of Parkton, N.C.; a son, James Fletcher Rhymer of Charleston; two brothers, Ray Rhymer and Gay Rhymer, both of Union; a sister, Lois Middlebrook of Union; five grandchildren, Drew Bybee of Hope Mills, N.C,. Danny Morgan of Pawley’s Island, Kristi Kicklighter of Hendersonville, Jessica Rhymer of Charleston and Robbie Holsclaw of Charleston; and five greatgrandchildren.

Mr. Rhymer was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Dallas was born in Buffalo on Nov. 1, 1937, a daughter of the late Carry Kingsmore and Ella Farmer Kingsmore. She was retired from Buffalo Mill after 25 years service.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy Gault of the home; two sons, Ricky Dallas of Columbia, and Kenny Dallas of Greenville, Tenn.; three brothers, Earl Kingsmore of Union, Charles and Glenn Kingsmore, both of Greenwood; three sisters, Beverly West, Edna Davis and Charlotte Ochiltree, all of Buffalo; two grandchildren, Dennis Gault and Kimberly Dallas; and two great-grandchildren, Macy Gault and Cody Dallas. Retired from S.C. Highway Dept.

BUFFALO — Rufus O. Lawson Jr., 79, husband of Elizabeth L. Lawson of 142 Putman Road, Buffalo, died early Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Lawson was born in West Springs July 22, 1926, the son of the late Rufus O. Lawson Sr. and Betrice Gowan Lawson. He graduated West Springs High School and completed engineering courses through the S.C. Highway Department. He retired from the S.C. Highway Department as a resident engineer after 40 plus years service. Mr. Lawson was a member of the Union County Horseman’s Association and a lifelong member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Bogansville Men’s Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Belinda L. Sturgill and husband Terry of Pacolet; a grandson, Erich Sturgill and wife Julie of Spartanburg; a great-grandson, Bennett Sturgill of Spartanburg; nephew Steve Lawson and wife Brenda of Buffalo and their children, Clay Lawson of Spartanburg and Sgt. Nick Lawson of Camp LeJeune, N.C.; two “adopted” sons, Jeff Lawson and Mark Lawson and their children, Sam Lawson, Madison Lawson and Macey Lawson; and an “adopted granddaughter, Megan Lancaster, all of Putman. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Gowan Lawson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson, the Rev. Clayton Price and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service.

Active pallbearers will be Clay Lawson, Sgt. Nick Lawson, Ronnie Lawson, Bill Lawson, Kenneth Riddle, Jack Jennings, Bill Inman and Chris Smith.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Freida Fuller Sunday School Class, past and present members of the Union County Horseman’s Association, Ruth and Otzel Lancaster, Becky and Hugh Sanders, Kenneth Puckett, Billy and Elliot Kelly, Ashley Sherbert, Jeff and Tyler Queen, Malcolm, Shirley and Kevin Riddle.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.Thursday at the funeral home.

Pauline M. Palmer
Retired from Carlisle Finishing Co.

Pauline M. Palmer, 83, of 308 Johns St., Union, widow of Joe P. Palmer, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005.

Mrs. Palmer was born April 3, 1922, the daughter of the late Joe and Ophelia Lawson Mosley. She was retired from Carlisle Finishing Co. and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mrs. Palmer was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon. The family will receive friends 6:30 until 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

JONESVILLE — George Kenneth “Kenny” Gardin Sr., 53, of 500 S. Main St., Jonesville, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Gardin was born in Gaffney April 2, 1952, the son of the late George Alfred and Daisy Gardin. He was of the Baptist faith. He was formerly employed with Belue Trucking.

Surviving are his wife, Ramonda Barrs Gardin of Buffalo; two daughters, Silver Dawn Gardin and Angela Christine Gardin,; two sons, George K. Garden Jr. and Dakota Mountain Gardin; two grandchildren, Trinidy Ravan Gardin and Michael Montana Gardin, all of Buffalo; five sisters, Judy Mitchell of Jonesville, Sandra Gibson of Union, Karen Holt and Charlene Dimsdale, both of Jonesville and Annette Gresham of Clinton; two brothers, George Gardin of Jonesville and Charlie Gardin of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at Holcombe Jonesville Chapel conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in the Gardin Family Cemetery.

Lewis Edward Whitehead, 68, of 507 Hart St., Union, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Whitehead was born in Union, the son of the late Ernest Eugene and Mason Greer Whitehead. He was formerly employed with Butte Knitting Mill.

Survivors are a sister, Bertha W. Trammell of Union; two brothers, Paul J. Whitehead and Howard Whitehead, of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Whitehead was predeceased by four brothers, Jesse Whitehead, Eugene Whitehead Jr., Wallace Whitehead and Robert Whitehead.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The family will receive friends 7 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Elsie Thomas Malpass

Mrs. Elsie Thomas Malpass, age 95, of 204 Springs Street, Union, SC widow of Will Talley Malpass died Sunday, October 30, 2005 in Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Malpass was born in Clifton, SC July 18, 1910, the daughter of the late J.B. and Pearl Morrow Thomas. She was retired from United Merchants- Union Mills and was a member of Crestview Baptist Church, formerly Westside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.

Survivors are: two sons; Willie Malpass of Charleston, SC and Larry Malpass of Union, two sisters; Lois Rice of Charlotte, NC and Frances Allen of Columbia, SC, a brother; Theodore Thomas of Gastonia, NC, nine grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Harold Malpass.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Gerald Eaves. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The members of Mrs. Malpass’s Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the chapel at 1:45PM to form the Honorary Escort. The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
