James W. Hollingsworth Sr.

James W. “Jim” Hollingsworth Sr., 79, widower of Ruth Louise Jackson Hollingsworth, formerly of 219 Haas St., Monarch Community, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 in the home of his son at 1547 S.C. Highway 66 in Whitmire.

Mr. Hollingsworth was born in Union Nov. 30, 1926, a son of the late Lawrence Culbreath Hollingsworth and Lillian Willard Hollingsworth. He retired from Torrington Co. and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hollingsworth was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are a son, James W. Hollingsworth Jr. of Whitmire, a brother, Henry Hollingsworth of Union; a sister, Hortense Sinclair of Union; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Hollingsworth was predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Doff Lawrence Hollingsworth, Dorothy Hollingsworth Spindler and Ester Hollingsworth Morrison; and a granddaughter, Angela Dana Hollingsworth.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 1, 2006 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tim Hollingsworth, Terry Hollingsworth, Frank Morrison, Randy Morrison, Dennis Sinclair and Lynn Sinclair.

Jerry T. Nicholson

NASHVILLE, Tenn, — Jerry T. Nicholson, 50, husband of Paulette Nicholson, of Nashville died Feb. 27, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jerry let go of hands here that loved him very much to reach out to hands that loved him more.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Matthew Nicholson; parents, Jack and Carol Nicholson of Easley; and a brother, Mark (Renee) Nicholson of Union. Mr. Nicholson was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Tammy Zelenka.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2006 at noon at Madison Church of Christ, Bixler Chapel, 106 Gallatin Road, Madison by Ronnie Gower and Tracy Moore. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

Gabrielle Wendy-Michelle Queen, infant daughter of Kelvin and Crystal “Crickett” Griffin Queen of 124 Line St., Union, died Thursday morning, March 2, 2006, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.
Gabrielle was born in Charleston on Oct. 12, 2005.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandparents, Shirley and Harvey Smith of Union; paternal grandparents, Roswitha and George Queen of Lockhart; maternal greatgrandparents, Peggy and Daniel Inman of Union; paternal great-grandparents, Johann and Marianna Frensch of Germany; maternal great-great-grandmother, Alice Bowen of Blackwater, Va.; a special cousin, A.J. Edwards of Union and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Monarch Assembly of God conducted by the Rev. Jerry Hargrove and the Rev. Roger Roof. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Jonathan Michael Walker, 23, of 140 Bert Walker Road, died early Friday morning.

Jonathan was born in Union, Dec. 25, 1982, a son of Michael Chris Walker and Jeanie Darlene Vanderford Walker. He was employed with Netmeco as an equipment operator and was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, April Walker of Union; a nephew, Landon Walker of Union; and his maternal grandmother, Jeanie Lee Vanderford of Sharon. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, James L. “Bud” Vanderford and his paternal grandparents, Bert and Mary Walker.

Thomas Earl Frost, 75, widower of Catherine Bright Frost, of 106 Teal Road, Union, died Sunday, March 5, 2006.

Mr. Frost was born in Union June 6, 1930, a son of the late Joe and Frances Frost Wilburn. He was retired from Timken Co., Union, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Frost was a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Janice Maness and husband Steve of Buffalo; a son, Scotty Frost of the home; three grandchildren, Adam Maness and wife Liza, Joseph Maness and Lindsey Maness; and three great-grandchildren, Dawson Maness, Daisie Maness and Auston Maness. Mr. Frost was predeceased by three sisters, Lizzie Petty, Effie Faylin, Quinne Bishop and five brothers, Harmon Berlie Goins, Charles E. Frost, James Roy Frost, Willie Frost and George Frost.

SPARTANBURG — Constance Sanborn Hixson, 51, wife of Terry K. Hixson of 176 1/2 E. Lanford St., Spartanburg, died Friday, March 3, 2006.

Mrs. Hixson was born in the Boston, Mass., area, April 5, 1954, a daughter of Phillip A. Sanborn and the late Katherine Mayo Sanborn. She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and was a registered cosmetologist. Mrs. Hixson served her country in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter, Stephanie Hixson-Moss and husband Brent of Union; four sons, Frank Hixson and wife Mary of Union, Mark Hixson and wife Nikki of Cross Keys, Ralph Hixson and Jason Hixson, both of Germany; a sister, Leigh Caston of Spartanburg; a brother, Richard Sanborn of Ohio; five grandchildren, Carrie Hixson, Tyler Hixson, Cody Hixson, Payton Moss and Nicholas Hixson.

Mrs. Evelyn V. Garner, age 83, of 2805 Fair Avenue, Newberry, SC, widow of Wallace Garner died Thursday, March 9, 2006.

Mrs. Garner was born in Ninety Six, South Carolina July 23, 1922 a daughter of the late Douglas Edward Medlock and Margaret Trussel Midget. She was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of the 700 Club and Dove Broadcasting. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors are: two daughters; Brenda Henderson and husband Jessie and Freddie Garner Foster both of Union, two sons; Wayne Garner and wife Sue of Smyrna, Ga. and Ronald "Goober" Garner and wife Sandy of Buffalo, fourteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a daughter Patricia Garner.

James Murphy Lemmon, 69, husband of 46 years of Patricia Ann Derrick Lemmon, of 104 Hidden Hill Road, died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Lemmon was born in Conway, March 28, 1936, a son of the late Samuel Lindsey Lemmon and Myrtle Murphy Lemmon. Mr. Lemmon was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in business and was honored with an athletic scholarship in baseball. He and his wife were former owners of Derrick Motor Co. of Union. Mr. Lemmon served on the S.C. Automobile Dealer’s Association. He was an avid member and active contributor to the S.C. Gamecock Club and was a dedicated USC alumni. Mr. Lemmon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder of the church. Upon his retirement, Mr. Lemmon’s most enjoyable hobby was working in his yard.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, J. Murphy Lemmon Jr. and wife Molly of Hilton Head, R. Derrick Lemmon and wife Michele of Daniel Island, Kevin Lemmon and wife Tiffany of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren, Jordan Andrew Lemmon, Collin Ray Lemmon, Madeline Michele Lemmon, Caroline Rebecca Lemmon, Matthew Welton Lemmon, and his beloved dog, Peaches. Mr. Lemmon was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Lindsey Lemmon Jr.

MONCKS CORNER — Funeral services for James William Scott Sr., 85, husband of Kathleen J. Brunson-Scott, were held Monday, March 13, 2006 at Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Burial was in Burnson/Causey Cemetery, Jamestown.

Mr. Scott was a retired Ship’s Progressman with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and a retired ENC with the U.S. Navy. He was born Jan. 29, 1921 in Union, a son of Charles M. Scott Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Turner Scott. He was aboard the USS Oklahoma during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1960. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, American Defense-1 Star, Asiatic Pacific, 5 Stars, American Area Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation, 1 Star; Good Conduct Medal, 5 Stars and Expert Pistol Shot. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9509, the American Legion Post #126, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was a member of the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Penny S. Metts of Moncks Corner; a son, James W. Scott Jr. of San Diego, Calif., two step-daughters, Dr. Gloria B. Pipkin of Jamestown and Jackie B. Lucas of Moncks Corner; a step-son, Thomas H. Burnson of Jamestown; sisters, Jeanelle S. Wingo, Carol S. Rector and Kathryn S. Bishop, all of Union; and Helen S. Miss Edna Crosby, age 81, native of Union and former resident of Columbia, SC died Wednesday, March 21, 2006 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C.

Miss Crosby was born in Union County, SC July 7, 1924, the daughter of the late W.H. and Alliene Cornwell Crosby. Miss Crosby spent most of her life in Columbia, SC where she and her deceased twin sister Edith were employed by Southern Bell Telephone. She had recently moved to Raleigh, NC to be near her sole surviving sister, Dorothy C. Meador.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 24, 2006 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Amy E. Meador. Burial will follow at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.

LeRoy R. Ivey

LeRoy R. Ivey, 87, beloved and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. He and his wife Aileen Vaughan Ivey lived at 137 Frank Hill Loop Extension, Union.

Mr. Ivey was born in Union, Feb. 12, 1919, a son of the late Ben Clifford Ivey Sr. and Anna Harris Ivey. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, chairman of Deacons, a former Training Union Director, former superintendent of Sunday School and a former member of the choir. Following Mr. Ivey’s retirement from Milliken & Co. Excelsior Plant he co-founded Ivey’s Furniture Co. in August of 1977. Mr. Ivey was active in community service, he was elected a member of the board of directors of Brown’s Creek Water Co. in 1972. In January 1980 he became president of the board of directors and served in that capacity until 2004. He was a former president of the Union County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Union County Cattleman’s Association. Mr. Ivey was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Glenn R. Ivey and wife Emily of Union; a granddaughter, Ashley Emily Ivey of Union; four sisters, Rudelle I. Morris, Anna I. Tipton, both of Union, Goldie I. Jordan of Titusville, Fla., and Barbara I. Summer of Greenville; two brothers, Ben Clifford Ivey Jr. of Union and Ned Ivey of Buffalo; a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Ivey was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Etrulia I. Moore, Arthur Ivey, Jack Ivey and Willindsey Ivey.

Mr. Gay Clinton Goodson, Sr., age 75, husband of Doretha Shirley Goodson of 137 Lawson Rd., Union, SC died Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Goodson was born in Canton, NC February 12, 1931 a son of the late Reubin Lee and Zonie Hawkins Goodson. He graduated Bethel School in Canton, NC and the U.S. Forestry School. He later retired as a technician with the U. S. Forestry Service. Mr. Goodson was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church and a member of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class. He was a former Cub Scout Master of Pack 48, an Assistant Boy Scout Master Troop 48 of the Monarch Community and portrayed Smoky the Bear for the school children and other activities in Union County. Mr. Goodson received two Certificates of Merit Award, a 25 Year Award and Conservation Award all from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also received an Appreciation Plaque for Dedicated Service from the U.S. Forestry Service. Mr. Goodson was rewarded by having the Gay Goodson Road named in his honor for services rendered in Chester County, SC.

Mrs. Ravan was born in Spartanburg, SC April 28, 1956 a daughter of the late Carl Eugene Thompson and Rosella Elizabeth Fowler Thompson. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith.

Miss Vanderford was born in Lockhart, SC April 13, 1928, a daughter of the late Pete and Jennie Candler Vanderford. She was a member of Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Wesley’s Chapel Senior Citizens. She also was a member of Lockhart Senior Citizens Group. Miss Vanderford was formerly employed with Union Services.

Survivors are: two sisters; Kathleen Revels of Taylors, SC and Sally Palmer of Union, two brothers; Clarence Vanderford of Lockhart and Mack Vanderford of Union and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Bailey, Tracey Gene Rash, Ronnie Crocker, Travis Crocker, Jonathan Vanderford, Ralph Crocker and Casey Watkins. Members of Mary Ruth Vanderford Sunday School Class are asked to form the Honorary Escort.

The family will receive friends 1:00 - 1:45 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service.

Ruby Pierce

Mrs. Ruby Foster Pierce, age 82, widow of M.B. Pierce, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Fountain Inn Nursing Home in Fountain Inn, SC.

Mrs. Pierce was born in Union, SC October 25, 1923 a daughter of the late William and Nannie Grubbs Foster. She was a graduate of Union High School and later retired from Milliken & Company. Mrs. Pierce was a long time member of Westside Baptist Church.

Survivors are: three daughters; Judy Robbins and husband J.D. of Rocky Mt., N.C., Sharon Whitfield and husband Eddie of Ridgeway, SC and Carolyn Malpass and husband Donald of Union, one sister; Vera Millwood Chasey of Whitmire, eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell and Chaplin Glenda Bumgarner. Burial will follow in Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery, Draytonville, SC.

Active Pallbearers will be Kenny Sherbert, Billy Joe Duncan, Jr., Bobby Prestwood, Charles Estes, Jr., Donald Malpass, Jr. and Jeff Gilfillan. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donald Malpass, Grady Beard and Gene Pierce.

The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnny Denver Roberts, age 73, husband of Bobbie Fowler Roberts of 206 Bailey Town Rd., Union, died Sunday March 26, 2006 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Roberts was born in Union, June 23, 1932, a son of the late Elmer Brownlow Roberts and Ollie Foster Roberts. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and Robinsons Business College in Spartanburg. Mr. Roberts was retired from Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant. He was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge and a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Lockhart Unit and was of the Free Will Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son and daughter-in-law: Phil and Teresa Roberts of Spartanburg; two grandchildren: Casey Elizabeth Roberts and John Conner Roberts both of Spartanburg; one sister: Betty R. Burns of Lockhart; two brothers: Harold Roberts of Chester and Eddie Roberts of Hendersonville, NC. Mr. Roberts was predeceased by a brother, Charles Roberts.

Graveside services with Masonic Rites will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 31, 2006, at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mr. William Ray Sims
Union, S.C.

Mr. William Ray Sims, age 83, husband of 50 years to Betty Bumgarner Sims of 2910 Whitmire Hwy., Union, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Sims was born in Sedalia, SC, Dec. 14, 1922 a son of the late Joseph Ernest Sims and Anna Lee Bailey Sims. Mr. Sims was a combat veteran of WWII with the 78th Infantry Division for 2 years. He received the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Legion of Merit, the U.S. Meritorious Award and many other awards and decorations. Mr. Sims retired from the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit after 30 years of service and was inducted into the S.C. National Guard Hall of Fame, Feb. 25, 2006. He retired in 1984 after working 45 years with Union Dry Cleaning and Steam Laundry Co. Mr. Sims was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder of the church. Mr. Sims taught Sunday School for over 40 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son Barry R. Sims of Tampa, FL; two sisters: Mary Arthur Powers and husband Don of Union and Ruth Smith and husband Rudy of Maybinton; one brother: H. Lewis Sims and wife Helen of North Augusta; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Sims was predeceased by one sister, Margaret King and 3 brothers, Gordon H. Sims, Joe B. Sims, and Marion E. Sims.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 31, 2006 at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joel Burke, Rev. Fred Manning and Rev. Reuben Wallace. Burial will be at Whitmire Cemetery with full Military Rites.

Active pallbearers will be Bill Clowney, John J. Smith, Dennis Dunigan, Kenny Ivey, Terry Lawing and Dean Brown.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 1:45 PM to form the honorary escort: Billy Gonce, Paul Stewart, Henry Sanders, Al Smith, Bobby Vaughan, Belton Lawson and Earl Bryan.

Visitation will be held 6:30 until 8:00 PM Thursday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Preston F. Bailey, Jr., age 77, husband of Mary Sue Owenby Bailey of 105 Pinedale Avenue, Union, SC died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Bailey was born in Union, SC June 12, 1928, the son of the late Preston F. Bailey, Sr. And Virginia Farr Bailey. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was retired from Inman Mills-Enoree Plant. Mr. Bailey was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: two daughters; Judy Bailey Davis and husband Bob of Leesburg, Va. and Cindy Bailey Robbins and husband Rex M. of Taylors, SC, a son; Preston F. Bailey, III of Boiling Springs, six grandchildren; Maura Bailey, Chris Davis, Dan Davis, Jonathan Robbins, Matthew Robbins and Timothy Robbins.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon.

The family will receive friends 2:30-3:30 P.M. Saturday afternoon at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the service.
