Juanita Phillips Wilburn

Mrs. Juanita Phillips Wilburn, age 91, of 114 Wedgewood Court, Union, SC, widow of Fred M. Wilburn died Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Wilburn was born in Union, SC February 29, 1916, a daughter of the late D.B. Phillips and Mallie Israel Phillips. She retired from Belk’s Department Store in Union and was a member of the First Baptist Church - Union.

Surviving are a daughter, Jackie W. Cody and husband Frank of Union; a son, Phillip M. "Phil" Wilburn of the home; a brother, Bobby T. Phillips and wife Barbara of Marion, SC; a grandson, Don Cody and wife Donna; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Cody all of Union and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 3, 2007 at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Emory and Rev. Wayne Cooke.

Visitation will be held immediately after the service at the graveside.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main Street, Union, SC 29379 or to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277.

Cathleen B. Carroll
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Cathleen Bailey Carroll, age 79, widow of Raymond Carroll of 125 Carroll Hollow Rd. Union, died Saturday, August 4, 2007.

Mrs. Carroll was born, October 10, 1927 a daughter of the late Sidney and Maggie Goings Bailey. She was first married to the late Layton Garner who was killed in action during WWII. Mrs. Carroll was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School, Columbia Business College and Spartanburg Junior College. She was a retired Accounting Manager with Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Atlanta GA having previouly worked for the company in Chicago, IL. She was also retired from Ace Hardware in Atlanta. Mrs. Carroll was an active member as long as her health permitted of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where she was part of the Grace Little Sunday School Class and a member of the WMU. She was very active in her community being a member of the Red Hat Society, Rambling Rose Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Marintz Order of Shriners and the William Wallace Chapter 660 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy for 25 years.

She had served as past president of the Kelton Club of the Family Community Leaders of the Clemson Ext. and was currently serving as secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Carroll served on the Union Co. FCL Excutive Board and was named 2006 member of the year. She was the Union Co. Fair Board organinzing the Baked Goods section. She was active along with her husband in his veterans group called "Hell on Wheels".

Mrs. Carroll was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a niece: Mary Ann Morrison and husband Rick of Spartanburg; a nephew: Sidney Lawson and wife Cynthia of Union; a number of great nieces and nephews, cousins and several dear friends and caregivers including; Joyce Hembree, Mary Lee Hembree, Brenda Blackwood, Sherri McCutheon, Tony and Cindy Harris and Rev. Alan West. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Margaret Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Rev. Bill Adams. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ned Bell, C.W. Garner, Wayne Garner, Tony Harris, Bill Hovis and Kevin Garner.

The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort: Matthew Carroll, Dave Clark, Mrs. Carroll’s caregivers: Pearl Inman, Christine Inman and Lorine Hovis. Member of Rambling Rose Red Hat Club, the Kelton FCL Club and the Grace Little Sunday School Class are all asked to sit in a goup.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Mt. Joy Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Mt. Joy Baptist Church Building Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Hwy., Jonesville, SC, 29353.

Norma June Smith
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Norma June Turner Smith, age 69, wife of Jimmy Smith of 1816 Whitmire Hwy., Union, died Saturday, August 4, 2007 at her home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in Duluth GA, Jan. 1, 1938, a daughter of the late Guy and Merle Davis Turner. She retired from the US Postal Service in Tampa, FL and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church, Union where she had served as the Child Enrichment Director.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter: Susan Adams and husband Don; two sons: Mark Smith, Lee Smith and wife Erica all of Union; one brother: Jerry Turner of Duluth, GA, three grandchildren, Thomas Smith, Matthew Wilson and Dianne Stebbins; two great-grandchildren: Taylor Johnson and Tristin Johnson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, August 6, 2007 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Gossett, Glover Morris, Frank Alexander, Herman Crocker, Tom Alexander, Andy Littlejohn, William Jolly and Frank Bobo.

Member of the Jimmy Smith’s Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM Monday prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Carroll Wayne Cooper, age 56, husband of Joyce Roberts Cooper of 218 Church Street, Jonesville, SC died Monday, August 6, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Cooper was born in Greenwood, SC November 28, 1950, a son of Carroll Dean Cooper and Betty Ezell Cooper of Ware Shoals, SC. He was a 1969 graduate of Ware Shoals High School and a 1976 Graduate of Lander College with a BA Degree in Art. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Emily C. Murrah and husband Brandy of Walnut Cove, NC, Carla Cooper and Kelsi Cooper both of the home; a sister, Faye C. Branyon and husband Dan; two brothers: Allen D. Cooper and Vance Cooper and wife Jane all of Ware Shoals; two grandchildren: Emma Grace Murrah and Braden Murrah; a number of nieces and nephews and best friend, Ronnie Lipsey, Jr. of Jonesville. Mr. Cooper was predeceased by a sister, Robin C. Hodges.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will follow in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Eugene Rector, Josh Cooper, Andrew Cooper, Cal Branyon, Larry Wayne Knox and Robert Hames.

Mrs. Rebecca LeMaster "Becky" Dye, age 59, husband of Stephen V. "Sonny" Dye of 207 Walker Heights, Union, SC died suddenly Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Dye was born in Union, SC August 5, 1948, the daughter of the late Horace LeMaster and Pauline Foster LeMaster. She was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with Grace Management in Spartanburg. Mrs. Dye was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Stephanie Dye Brackins and husband Roy; a son, Stephen V. Dye, Jr and fiancee Lauren Hein; two sisters: Patsy L. Eubanks and Elizabeth L. Fallaw all of Union and three grandchildren: Morgan Elizabeth Brackins, Taylor Brooke Brackins and Rebecca Dianne Brackins and a special family friend, Mary Vinson of Union. Mrs. Dye was predeceased by a sister Doris LeMaster.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 9, 2007 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Bobby Leon Knox

Mr.Bobby Leon Knox, age 75, husband of Claudette Keisler Knox of 102 4th Street, Ottaray Community, Union, SC left his home surrounded by his family and friends to be with his Lord Jesus Christ Wednesday, August 8, 2007.

Mr. Knox was born in Union, SC December 25, 1931, a son of the late Gettys Knox and Daisy Marie Davis Knox. He was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75, a former Shriner and retired from Knox Construction. Mr. Knox was a Veteran of the US Army after sixteen and one-half years of service.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Sherry K. Davis and husband Fred of Clinton, SC, Cynthia K. Valencia and husband Robert of Dallas, TX and Charlotte K. Adams of Union; a son, Bobby Leon Knox, Jr and wife Cindy of Amherst, VA; three sisters: Naomi Bates, Shirley Brannon and Brenda Shetley; two brothers: Olin D. Knox and Claudie Williams all of Union; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Knox was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers: Harold Knox, Ralph Knox, Louise Black and Willie Woods.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, August 10, 2007 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. Joe Coker. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Kathleen Kirby Earley, age 82, of 2116 East Fairmont Avenue, Spartanburg, SC, widow of Manson Solomon Earley died Thursday, August 9, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Earley was born in Pacolet, SC, a daughter of the late Robert Kirby and Ethel Fowler Kirby. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors are a daughter, Laura Earley with whom she made her home; three sons: Newton Earley and wife Joan of Moore, SC, Larry Earley and wife Debbie of Spartanburg and Henry Earley and wife Bonnie of Gaffney; two sisters: Louise Panell and Vera Richards both Pacolet; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 11, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Pacolet Cemetery.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the graveside.

Jimmy Hoover

Mr. Jimmy Hoover, age 71, husband of Mary Chandler Hoover of 213 Old Shetley Place, Union, SC died Friday, August 10, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Hoover was born in Neese, SC, January 23, 1936, a son of the late O’Dell Hoover and Lucille Chavis Hoover. He was a 1957 graduate of S.C. School for the Death and Blind, retired from Milliken & Co-Monarch Plant and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Nancy Hoover of the home; three brothers: Billy Hoover, Clyde Hoover and Dell Hoover all of Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Alvin Biggerstaff. Burial will be held 3:00 PM at the Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, SC.

William Clyde "Junior" Knox

William Clyde "Junior" Knox, age 59 husband of Karin Flowers Knox of 1508 Pineland Road, Union SC died August 11, 2007 at 2:55 PM at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mr. Knox was born in Union, SC December 11, 1947 a son of the late Clyde Knox Sr. and Irene Murphy Knox. He was a truck driver, and a veteran of the US Army, serving in Vietnam. Mr. Knox was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, a daughter, Gena Webber and husband, Ernie of Jonesville; a son, Brian Knox and wife, Rita of Union; 4 sisters, Jean Walden, Mary Ann Fleming and husband, Arthur all of Spartanburg, SC; Kathy Fowler and husband, Ken of Union, SC; and Wanda Garner and husband Ted of Gaffney, SC; a brother, Roy Knox of Union, SC; a granddaughter, Hanna Webber and 2 grandsons, Hunter Wolfe and William C. "Will" Knox all of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a nephew, Ricky Garner.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Joe Stover. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Fred H. O’Dell, age 84 husband of Addie Jolly O’Dell of 3323 Lockhart Hwy. Union, SC died early Sunday morning, August 12, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care.

Mr. O’Dell was born in Union, SC June 9, 1923 a son of the late Fred H. O’Dell Sr. and Nora Dotson O’Dell. He attended Union High School and was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Army in Italy. He retired as plant manager with Klapat Textiles. Following his retirement he worked with his brother, Jack O’Dell at Midway Barbeque. Mr. O’Dell was a faithful member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church were he had served as a Deacon and was Church Treasurer for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, a daughter, Joan O’Dell Craig and a son, Ronald B. O’Dell both of Greenville, SC; one brother, Jack O’Dell of Union; 4 granddaughters and their hubands, Angela and Greg Wilkerson, Susan and David Fromknecht, Deanna and Ed Blackburn, and Ronda and David Edmonds and 5 great-grandchildren. Mr. O’Dell was pre-deceased by 4 brothers; Howard O’Dell, Cecil O’Dell, Clyde O’Dell, and Bill O’Dell and 2 sisters; Ethel Holden Kemple, and Doris Howell.

Services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will following in Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:15 until 2:45 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church prior to the service.

Mr. Francis Kent Webber, age 61, husband of Thelma K. Crawford died Monday, August 13, 2007 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Webber was born in Union County, SC November 29, 1945, a son of the late Charles C. Webber, Sr and Pearl Keith Webber. He was employed with the South Carolina Department of Transportation in Union and was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Webber was an avid hunter and fisherman. "Kent" especially enjoyed rabbit hunting with his dogs.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a special son, Dennis Kirby and wife Jo Ann of Union; a brother, Charles "Sonny" Webber, Jr and wife Rita of Jonesville; a sister, Judy Blackwell and husband Johnny of Gaffney; a special niece, Tammy Webber Burgess and husband Neal and son Cole of Jonesville; two grandchildren: Tansy Ham and husband Shannon of Jonesville and Lacy Kirby and finance Lee Shropshire of Union; a great-grandson Gavin Ham; three additional nieces, Charlene, Dolly and Sonya and a special companion "Buffie".

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 16, 2007 at the Webber Cemetery in Jonesville conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Rob Vernon.

Mr. Calvin Maddox Gillian Sr., age 63 of 221 East Main St. Union, formerly of Buffalo, SC husband Judy Knox Gillian died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Gillian was born in Union County, SC. October 26, 1943, a son of the late James Henry Gillian, Sr. and Bonnie Lovelace Gillian. He was a retired Textile Worker and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. Mr. Gillian enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Carolyn Ford and husband, Lewis of Buffalo, SC; a son, James Gillian of Spartanburg, SC; 3 step daughters, Grace Covington, Lynn Fox, April Inman of Union, SC; a step son, Neal Burris of Buffalo, SC; 10 grandchildren, 3 sisters, Shirley Michaud and husband, Gerald of Norfolk, NY; Deloris Lowe and husband, John and Brenda Ballard and husband, Wayne both of Union, SC; 2 brothers, J.H. Gillian and wife Marie of Ninety Six, SC; and Alvin Gillian and wife Lois of Buffalo, SC. Mr. Gillian was pre-ceased by a son, Calvin Maddox Gillian, Jr.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Larry Padgett and Rev. Ricky Cook.

Mr. Lloyd Whitmore, age 80 formerly of Buffalo, SC, husband of Betty M. Whitmore of Buffalo died Thursday, August 16 2007 after an extended illness.

Mr. Lloyd Whitmore was the son of the late Ruth W. Prince. He was retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and was employed with the Waterloo Recycling Center.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Renae Whitmore and DeeAnn Boulware; a son, Lee Whitmore all of Buffalo; three grandsons, a granddaughter; a great-grandson and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Whitmore’s close friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 12:30-2:00 PM Saturday in the parlor of the church.

Robert Dale Gregory

Mr. Robert Dale "PI" Gregory, age 66, formerly of N. Boyce Street, Union, SC, widow of Elizabeth Hutto Gregory died August 16, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gregory was born in Union, SC May 23, 1941, a son of the late Wallace A. Gregory and Annie Mae Crowe Gregory. He was a retired auto mechanic and sheet metal craftsman. Mr. Gregory was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a sister, Martha Willard and husband Barth of Union; two step-daughters: Cynthia Miller of Columbia and Wanda Anderson of Newberry; two nephews: Scott Willard and wife Teresa of Chester and Steve Willard and wife Laura of Union and three great nieces: Melia Willard, Meghan Willard and Annie Willard.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Saturday, August 18, 2007 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson. Private burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Lyle Lean Martin, age 89 widower of Rose Ann Krolczyk Martin died August 16, 2007 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Martin was born Franklin County, NY April 8, 1918, a son of the late Angus and Marion Gardner Martin. He was retired from Ray Vogtli and Sons Inc.

Survivors are: 3 daughters and son in-laws, Nancy and James Phillips of Conroe, TX; Jean and Charles Moehring of Cattaraugus, NY; and Cheryl and Michael Woodward of Altas, OK; 8 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday August 20, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Dorothy Thrift Sprouse

Mrs. Dorothy Thrift Sprouse, age 77, of 3127 Mt. Lebanon Rd. Buffalo, SC., wife of Robert G. Sprouse died Saturday, August 18, 2007 after a brief illness.

Mrs. Sprouse was born in Huntsville, Ala June 7, 1930 a daughter of the late Clyde and Alma Smith Thrift. She was retired from United Merchants-Union Plant and a very active member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband is 3 sons and daughter in-laws, Robert G. Sprouse, Jr.and wife Joan of Union, SC.; Terry Sprouse, and wife Gwenn, and Scott Sprouse all of Buffalo SC.; a brother Clyde Thrift, Jr. 10 grand children and 13 great-grand children. Mrs. Sprouse was pre-deceased by a son, Ricky Sprouse, a sister, Helen Painter, a step mother, Pauline Thrift, and a step brother, Clyde Modlin.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, August 20, 2007 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ted Hodges and Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Ann Groves Stephens, age 40 of 196 Jennings Circle, Buffalo, SC died Sunday, August 19, 2007.

Ms. Stephens was born in Union, SC February 24, 1967, a daughter of Ronnie Joe Groves, Sr and Brenda Willard Groves of Buffalo. She was formerly employed with United Merchants- Buffalo Plant and attended New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a Fiancee, Kevin Fisher of the home; three daughters Kimberly Groves, Elizabeth Stephens and Crystal Stephens all of the home; three sons: Joshua Stephens, Neal Stephens and Devin Fisher all of the home; two sisters: Stacey Malpass and husband Dennis and Julia Stephens all of Union; a brother, Ronnie Joe Groves, Jr. and wife Paige of Buffalo; paternal grandparents, Albert and Ruth Grubbs of Union; a granddaughter, Alysha Clark and a grandson, Kayden Clark both of the home and a number of nieces and nephews. Ms. Stephens was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Floyd LeeWillard and Margaret Kay Willard and a brother, Floyd Lee Willard.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM today at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Gene LeMaster, Justin LeMaster, Billy Livingston, Brent Phillips, Tyler Hudson, Alan Hudson, Jonathan Sousa and Jamie LeMaster. The following special friends are asked to sit in a group: Amy Livingston, Patty Whitlock, Sissy Bailey, Shannon West, Shelia Varner, Edna Davis, Rhonda Miller and Charlotte Ochiltree.

Fannie "Katie" Vaughan

Mrs. Fannie Lois V. "Katie" Vaughan, age 88, of 700 Brown’s Creek Rd., Union, SC, widow of S. Frank Vaughan died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Vaughan was born in Union, SC, October 2, 1918, a daughter of the late James Policer Vaughan and Belle Nance Vaughan. She was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Kim Greer and husband Jimmy of Union and Gail Gallman and husband Jimmy Wayne of Jonesville; a son, Bruce Vaughan and wife Paulette of Union; a daughter-in-law, Betty Vaughan of Union; seven grandchildren: Jimmy Wayne Gallman, Jr. and wife Kathy, Jamie Gallman and wife Cole, Dr. Tamila Keller and husband Kevin, Jim Greer and wife Nicole, Jeffrey Greer, Beth Belue and Steven Vaughan; two step-grandchildren: Tammy Hill and Katrina Hewitt and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Vaughan was predeceased by a son, Franklin Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Jimmy Gallman, Jr, Jamie Gallman, Steven Vaughan, Jeffrey Greer, Jim Greer and Chris Moore.

William H. Jenkins
Lockhart, SC

Mr. William H. "Bill" Jenkins of North First Street, Lockhart, SC, age 81 passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 .

Mr. Jenkins was born on October 15, 1925 in Union, County, SC. He was a son of the late Norman H. And Carrie B. Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II, Korea, Okinawa and the Philippines. Afterwards he began a longtime, dedicated career in textiles. Mr. Jenkins loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Lockhart Presbyterian Church were he served as an elder. He will always be remembered an humble gentleman who cared for his family and the needs of others.

Mr. Jenkins leaves behind his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Cora G. Jenkins; a son, David N. Jenkins and daughter-in-law Cathy P. Jenkins of Newberry. Also, his cherished grandchildren, Chase and Kelly J. Folk of Prosperity, Amy Louise Jenkins of Newberry and a great- grandson, William Hamilton Folk. He is survived by one brother, Hoyt Jenkins and sisters, Sara Agnes Willis, Dot Peters, Faye Tillotson, Mary Ruth Sanderson and Grace Peters. He was predeceased by one brother, Norman Jr. Mr. Jenkins’ extended family included dear brothers and sisters- in-law and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at Lockhart Presbyterian Church Friday, August 24, 2007 at 4:00 PM. Interment will follow in Union Memorial Gardens. Officiating pastors will be Rev. Steve Lemons, Rev. Robert Branch and Dr. Kenneth Harmon.

Nephews of Mr. Jenkins will serve as active pallbearers. Men of the church, William Vinson, Mike Allen and Hospice Caregivers are asked to assemble at the church at 3:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort.

Visitation will be held at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home on Thursday, August 23, 2007 from 7:00-9:00 PM.

John Wilson Harris
Union, SC

John Wilson Harris, Jr., 79, lovingly known as "Daddy" by his children, "Papa" by his grandchildren and "Willie" by everyone else, quietly slipped away at his home on August 23, 2007. A life-long Union resident, he was born on April 6, 1928 to the late John Wilson Harris, Sr. and Bell Gallman Harris.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, "Honey" Mayo Harris, and his oldest son, Michael Thomas Harris. He is survived by his three children, Jan Harris-Fahr and husband Dave, of Greenville, S.C., Sherry Sutton and husband Oscar, of Charlotte, N.C., Ricky Todd Harris and wife Jean, of Union, S.C. and grandchildren Jonathan Bobo, Matthew Bobo and wife Brooke, Michael Todd Harris and close friend, Kathryn "Kat" Jolly.

He was the founder and owner of Harris Electrical Contractor, Inc. in Union which celebrated 50 years of service this year and to which he passed to his son Ricky Todd in 1997. He served in the U. S. Navy and was a member of Grace Methodist Church. He loved sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves baseball teams. On Sunday afternoons, he could be found in front of his TV watching NASCAR Races.

Active pallbearers will be Terry and Mark Wade, Eddie Mayo, Sammy Smith, Chris Sanders, and Frank Humphries.

The following special friends are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers: Paul Sanders, Paul Peahuff, Jim McCormick, Donald Howell, William "Dub" Scales and Bud Young.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Interim Hospice and the 8th floor nursing staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospital for their care and kindness to our Daddy during his illness.

The children will be at the home 121 Toney Road, Union. Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, August 24th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Holcombe Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 25th at 11:00 AM at Union Memorial Gardens.

Carol S. Nicholson

Carol Smith Nicholson, 71, of 200 Powers Drive, went to be with the Lord Saturday August 25, 2007 at her home. A native of Easley, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Georgia Smith.

Mrs. Nicholson was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jack Nicholson, of the home; a son, Mark W. Nicholson and his wife, Rene, of Union; two brothers, Jimmy Smith and his wife, Bertie and Billy Smith, all of Easley; a sister, Betty Anders and her husband, John, of Easley; two grandchildren, Heather Nicholson, of Union and Matthew Nicholson, of Nashville, Tennessee; and a daughter-in-law, Paulette Nicholson, of Nashville, Tennessee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Nicholson and a sister-in-law, Montez Smith.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 pm at Calvary Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Paul Turner and the Reverend Bobby Caldwell.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family is at the home and will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Robinson Funeral Home - Downtown.

Mr. Marl Sylvan Ponder, age 73, husband of Sybil Cathcart Ponder of 150 Ponder Road, Buffalo, SC died Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Ponder was born in Spartanburg County, SC March 11, 1934, a son of the late George W. Ponder and Mary Lou Littlefield Ponder. He retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and was a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Ponder was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist

Church were he organized and played with the Praise Team. He was an accomplished musician since age fourteen having played Gospel Music and Country Music with numerous groups, the last being Gospel America.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-four years are a son, Danny C. Ponder and wife Gina of Pauline; three sisters: Lamatrel Haney of Buffalo, Sylvia Rush and Wanda Snyder both of Spartanburg; four grandchildren: Danny R. Ponder and wife Heather of Spartanburg, Berry J. Ponder and wife Amy Vaughn of Simpsonsville, April Parker and husband Jason of Spartanburg and Justin Ponder of Buffalo; six great-grandchildren: Anthony Evans, Michael Dean Evans, Hayden Ponder, Mya Ponder, Jacob Ponder and Grayson Ponder; a aunt, Lucille Kuykendal of Gaffney; a special friend, Larry LeMaster of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Ponder was predeceased by a son, Marl Dean Ponder and two brothers: Levon Ponder and Ricky Ponder.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Randy Pettit and Rev.Guy Langston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Rocky Lancaster, Raymond Clubb, Jason Parker, Larry LeMaster, Dean Tucker, Steve Freeman, Eric Haney and Mike Haney. Former Supervisors of Buffalo Mill are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort.

Visitation will be held at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the committal service.
