Ruby Burgess

Miss Ruby Burgess, age 93, of 405 South Church Street, Union, SC died Friday, November 30, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Miss Burgess was born in Cherokee Co. SC October 6, 1914, a daughter of the late William Wallace Burgess and Florence Rippey Burgess. She was retired from Monarch Mill, a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and a member of the Searchers Sunday School Class.

Miss Burgess was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving is a niece: Debbie Inman and husband Bobby of Union; reared in the home; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, December 3, 2007 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tommy McManus. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Timothy Bowers, James Sisk, Robert Gilkerson, Kent Burgess, Jerry Burgess and Graig Canupp.

Members of the Searchers Sunday School Class and Dr. Robert Yanetti are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 7:00 till 9:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

George Frank Hendry
Union, SC

Mr. George Frank Hendry, age 84, of 1418 Peach Orchard Rd. Union, husband of Edith Lavern Souffrant Hendry, died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care.

Mr. Hendry was born in Lanett, Ala. November 22, 1923, a son of the late Frank and Pearl Goodwin Hendry. He was retired from Stavaggie Industries and was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters: Sheila Ramsey of Montgomery, Ala., Patrica Dugas of Slovan, Pa., Cathy Golanka of Burgettstown, Pa., and Gerogia Mariano of Wellford, SC.; one son: Lucky Metheny of Weirton, WVa.; a sister: Faye Tines, a brother: Will Hendry both of Lanett, Ala.; 16 Grandchildren and 11 Great-grand children. Mr. Hendry was pre-deceased by a son: Gary Metheny.

Visitation will be held 2:00 till 4:00 PM Monday, December 3, 2007 at the S.R Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 W. South Street, Union, SC.

Funeral services with the burial will be Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at Robinson Run Cemetery in McDonald, Pa. Directed by: Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Rd. Burgettstown, Pa. 15021.

Mable Rogers Webber
Jonesville, SC

Mrs. Mable Rogers Webber, age 93, of 111 Forest St., Jonesville, died Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vivan Rochester Craig, after a long illness.

She was the widow of Boyd W. Webber.

Mrs. Webber was born in Spartanburg county September 30, 1914, a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Rosa Foster Rogers. She was retired from Conso Products and a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Survivors are two daughters: Vivian W. Rochester Craig and husband Bill and Elaine W. Bentley both of Jonesville; two sons: Boyd W. Webber and wife Diane of Lake Murray, and Thomas E. Webber and wife Sandra of Spartanburg; a sister: Minnie R. McAbee of Pacolet; 7 grandchildren: Susan R. Haile and husband Don of Columbia, Thomas C. Rochester and wife Tamatha of Jonesville, Amy R. Roberts and husband Stephen, Michael Bentley and wife Beverly both of Boiling Springs, Allyson B. Smith and husband Jeff of Pauline, Donna Clendine of Union, and Stephen E. Webber and wife Allison of Boiling Springs, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 7 nephews. Mrs. Webber was pre-deceased by a grandson: Jamie Webber, 2 son-in-laws: Carl Rochester and Sam Bentley, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Webber Cemetery, Jonesville conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Rochester, Stephen Roberts, Don Haile, Stephen Webber, Michael Bentley, Jeff Smith, Shelton Haile, Jeffery Smith, and Brad rochester.

Calvin H. Lovelace
Union, SC

Mr. Calvin H. "Petticoat" Lovelace, age 84, husband of Betty Sumner Lovelace of 117 Lovelace Circle, Union, SC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Mr. Lovelace was born in Rutherford County, N.C. March 27, 1923, a son of the late Benjamin Lovelace and Ola Bowen Lovelace. He retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant after forty years of service and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served with the 5th Aircraft Replacement Unit during World War II.. Mr. Lovelace was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, was a former Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Training Union Director. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and all around friend who was loved by all who knew him. Mr. Lovelace was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife Betty of sixty years are a daughter, Barbara L. Bowman and husband Jack; a son, Ted Lovelace and wife Tammie all of Monarch; two grandchildren reared in the home: Angie Millwood Hines of Union and Stacy Millwood Allen and husband Monty of Nashville, TN; seven additional grandchildren: Darren Canupp and wife Teri of Spartanburg, Chad Canupp of Lyman and Jennifer Canupp Turner and husband Chuck of Roebuck, Roman Walker and wife Emily of Union, Andy Bowman of Catawba, NC, Brenda Lambert and husband Michael, Barbara Baker and husband Steve all of Caldwell, NC; twelve great-grandchildren: Mackenzie Allen, Grayson Allen, Chandler Turner, Chase Turner, Brennan Canupp, Amanda Canupp, Josh Canupp, Logan Baker, Amber Lambert, Megan Lambert, Kayla Lambert and Alexis Bowman. Mr. Lovelace was predeceased by a son Bennie Ray Lovelace, four sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon, Monday, December 10, 2007 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Mrs. Joyce May White Addis, age 90, widow of W. S. Addis of 476 Bruce O. Wilson Rd., Union, died Monday, December 10, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Addis was born in Brisbane, Australia, Jan. 15, 1916, a daughter of the late Robert Henry White and Stella Metyard White. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons: Raymond Addis and wife JoEllen of Union and Robin Addis also of Union; one sister, Doris of Brisbane Australia; one brother: Doug White of Carlisle; four grandchildren: Kevin Addis and wife Leigh of Greenwood, Daniela Peagler and husband Daniel of Columbia, Jennifer Brannon and husband Tim and Samantha Lee and husband Shannon all of Union; two great-grandchildren: Caroline and Cameron Addis both of Greenwood. Mrs. Addis was predceased by a daughter, Patricia Ann Cook.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Sunset Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Active pallbearers will be Tim Brannon, Shannon Lee, Terry Bobo, Ermy Wilson, Ricky Eaves and Larry Lawson.

Robert E. Lee, Sr.
Lockhart, SC

Mr. Robert E. Lee, Sr., age 82, husband of Irene Conard "Tug" Lee of Lockhart, SC died Monday, December 10, 2007 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a brief illness

Mr. Lee was born in Spartanburg County, SC August 5, 1925, a son of the late Russell Lee and Oda Bell Cook Lee. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lockhart. Mr. Lee was a life member of the Masons and was a former Shriner. He retired from Torrington Company-Tyger River Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: Robert Lee, Jr and wife Kathy of Irmo; two brothers: Mack Lee and Olin Lee both of Union; two grandsons: Robby Lee of Colorado Springs, CO and Britton Lee and wife Wendy of Irmo and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Lee of Irmo. Mr. Lee was predeceased by two sisters, Juanita Elwood and Hazel Lee and a brother Frank Lee.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Alan Quarles and Rev. Brad Goodale.

Active pallbearers will be Mack Rash, Ronnie Lee, Johnny McKnight, Homer Elwood, Thomas Conard and Dale Lee.

Mr. Elmer Rector, age 81, husband of Deanie Gregory Rector of 404 S. Boyce Street, Union, SC died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Rector was born in Union, SC April 28, 1926, a son of the late Jerry Rector and Elva Adams Rector. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War. Mr. Rector retired from Cone Mills-Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as a former Deacon, member of the Adult Choir and worked with Team Kids. He was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a twin sister, Alma R. Burgess of Wagener, SC; a brother, Billy Davis of Cherry Grove, SC and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Rector was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Rector and Ruby Farr; two brothers, Jimmy Rector and Norman Rector and a step-mother, Molly Lunsford Rector.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Chad Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Charles Patrick "Chuck" Gleason
Union, SC

Mr. Charles Patrick "Chuck" Gleason age 79, husband of Carole Chalk Gleason of Desplains, IL died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.

Mr Gleason was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, November 25, 1928, a son of the late William Herbert Gleason and Francis Elizabeth Gleason. He was a graduate of Northwestern University and was retired from Record Copy Services in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Catholic Faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a sister, Jean Marsicano of Tampa, FL; two sisters-in-law: Ginger Chalk of Union and Rebecca Lipford and husband Lee of Moore and ten nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Father Michael McCafferty.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

George T. Holcombe

Mr. George T. Holcombe, age 82, of 1817 Jonesville Hwy, Ellen Sager Nursing Home, Union, formerly of Buffalo, SC, died Saturday Dec. 15, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Holcombe was born in Union, on Dec. 26, 1924, a son of the late Thomas Perry and Lala Ethel Hand Holcombe. He retired from United Merchants and Manufacturing, Buffalo Plant. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Buffalo Redmen Tribe and Buffalo Senior Citizens. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Holcombe is survived by a sister-in-law, Wanda Holcombe, widow of Lindbergh Holcombe,of Buffalo, with whom he made his home for many years. Other survivors include 3 nieces reared in the home; Cheryl Holcombe Moss and husband Mike; Jo Ellen Holcombe Addis and husband Raymond and Anita Holcombe Ward and husband Tony all of Union and many other nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by 8 brothers and 3 sisters.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday Dec. 17, 2007 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Union, SC, conducted by Rev. Tim Anderson and Rev. Johnny Burgess. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

Mrs. Lucille Wade Baber, age 77, widow of John Baber, Jr., formerly of 755 Webber Lake Rd., Union, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Baber was born in Union, August 16, 1930, a daughter of the late Linder Lee Wade and Gertrude Bryant Wade. She was retired from J.P. Stevens, Whitmire Plant and was a charter member of New Life Baptist Church where she was a member of the "Young at Heart" Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter: Debra Adams and husband Talmadge of Union; two sisters: Muriel W. Mitchell and Virginia Smith both of Union; two granddaughters: Jennifer A. Brown and husband Richard and Jan Adams all of Union; one grandson: Jonathan T. Adams and wife Katie of Union; a special great-grandson: Andrew Adams Brown of Union. Mrs. Baber was predeceased by two sisters, Thelma W. Wix and Eva W. Moody and two brothers: Roy P. Wade and Linder W. Wade.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 20, 2007 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory and Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Essie Moore Williford, age 86, wife of George W. Williford, formerly of 137 Phillips Rd., Union, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, December 22, 2007.

Mrs. Williford was born in Union, May 9, 1921, a daughter of the late Charlie and Inez Foster Moore. She was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a life long member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Jimmy Smith Sunday School class.

Surviving are two daughters: Lib Williford and Jane Wilson and husband Charlie all of Union; one sister: Ola Jean Kelly of Union; one brother: Bill Moore of Union; 6 grandchildren: Sherri Franklin and husband Phillip, Deanie Lane and wife Lisa, Elizabeth Ireton and husband Mark, Beth Lancaster and husband Blane, Charlie Wilson III and wife Kasi and Sam Phillips; 6 great-grandchildren: Lee, Kacie, and Courtney Franklin, Mitchel and Shannon Lane, and Ayden Lancaster. Mrs. Williford was predeceased by a daughter: Rebecca Lane; one sister: Lillie Mae O’Shields; two brothers: Rev. Charles Moore, Jr.and Edward Moore; a grandson: James Ashley Phillips; and a great-grandson: Charles W. Wilson, IV (Chas).

Funeral services were held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, Rev. Ralph Brown and Mr. Lee Franklin. Burial was at Union Memorial Gardens

Hubert Holmes Sprouse Jr.

Educator/Journalist

Memorial services for Hubert Holmes Sprouse, Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at the Jeter Family Chapel in Santuc. The family will receive friends at the chapel following the service.

Mr. Sprouse 64, died Nov. 18, 2007, in Costa Rica. Born in Union, he was the son of the late Hubert Holmes and Laura Pratt Henderson Sprouse. He was a 1965 graduate of Wofford College and received his masters at Tulane University. Mr. Sprouse taught at Loyola and Dillard Universities in New Orleans after which he worked as a newspaper and magazine writer and editor in the Northeast. He served as headmaster of Union Academy for three years before moving back to New Orleans. Prior to retiring in Costa Rica, he worked with ReMax Realty in the Crescent City.

Surviving are his sister, Jeannie S. (Paul) Jeter of Columbia; nephews, Paul (Catherine) Jeter, and Joseph (Damita) Jeter, both of Lexington, and Bryan (Kelly) Jeter of Reidville; seven great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hubert Holmes and Laura Pratt Sprouse Memorial Endowment Fund, S.C. Methodist Foundation, P.O. Box 5087, Columbia, S.C. 29250-5087. Funds from this endowment serve Grace United Methodist Church, Union.

Ralph H. Robinson

World War II veteran

GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Dec. 20, 2007, Mr. Ralph H. Robinson of Greensboro, widower of Hazel Betenbaugh Robinson, a daughter of Morris D. and Lola Betenbaugh of Union, died peacefully at home in his chair reading his Bible. He would have been 91 in July 2008.

Mr. Robinson served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He was promoted six times and earned four medals. He saw service in the Far East. After the war, he and Hazel moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the U.S. Printing Office until his retirement in 1973. This marriage produced two children.

After Hazel's death he married Margaret Betenbaugh of Union. That marriage ended after four years. In 1976, he married Dorothy Credeur, a marriage that lasted till her death in 2004.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Levine of Baltimore, Md., a son, Ralph Robinson of Falls Church, Va., and a grandson, James, and many family and friends who will miss him always.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Larry Padgett. A lunch will be served after the service at the home of Frances Vaughan of 114 Plantation Drive, Union.

Harry Ray Taylor
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Harry Ray Taylor, age 95, widower of Frances Kelly Taylor, of 127 South Fork Road, Jonesville, passed away Friday, December 28, 2007, at National Health Care of Lexington in West Columbia.

Mr. Taylor was born in Laurens, August 8, 1912, a son of the late Albert Jefferson Taylor and Bessie Humphries Taylor. He retired as store manager from A&P Tea Company in Monroe, NC, having previously worked at A&P in Union. Mr. Taylor was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church were he served on numerous committees and served as Trustee Emeritus. He was a former board member of the Rocky Creek Water Co. for 15 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Sara T. LaFountain and husband Keene of Columbia, and Kaye T. House and husband Don of Advance, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth T. Smarr of Laurens, Frances T. Garrett of Woodruff and Mary T. Wilson of Greenville; one brother, W. Marion Taylor of Liberty; grandchildren, Andy and Christine House, Jeff and Robin House, Leigh and Thad Loftin, Amie and Roger Price, Marc and Francisca LaFountain and Kevin LaFountain; seven great-grandchildren, Caroline, Cate and Ellen House, Tate and Kailey House, Georgia and Juliette Loftin; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Taylor was predeceased by two sisters, Martha T. Stackhouse of Sedelia and Doris T. Henderson of Greer.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 31, 2007 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Scott Gilmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Don House, Keene LaFountain, Andy House, Jeff House, Marc LaFountain, Kevin LaFountain, Thad Loftin and Roger Price.

Clara Morgan
Union, SC

Mrs. Clara F. Morgan, age 81, of Union, SC, widow of William P. "Bill" Morgan died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Morgan was born in Cedartown, Ga, August 8, 1926, a daughter of the late Harrison Ford and Emma McInvail Ford. She was an active member of Lakeside Church of Christ. Mrs. Morgan and her husband were former owners of Modern Cleaners for over fifty years. Later she operated Clara’s Alterations.

Mrs. Morgan is survived by three sons: Blake Morgan and fiancee, Sandy Kelly of Greenville, Union Mayor E. Bruce Morgan and wife Vicki of Union and Brian Morgan and wife Kim of Greenville; two sisters: Hazel Faegan of Columbus, NC and Frances McCullough of Corpus Christi, TX; a brother, Howard Ford of Cedartown, GA; nine grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Minister Ronnie Tripp.

Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Morgan’s grandsons: Milan Morgan, Jamie Morgan, Casey Morgan, Travis Morgan, James Harris and Denver Harris.

The family is at her home. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday night, January 1, 2008 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
