Minnie R. Lee

Mrs. Minnie Robinson Lee age 98, of 1314 Meansville Rd., Union, SC, widow of Henry S. Lee died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Lee was born in Union, SC November 29, 1908, a daughter of the late C.C. Robinson and Bessie I. Robinson. She was a graduate of Limestone College and retired Director of Union County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Lee was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was a member of Lucy Lee Shuler Circle and Clup/Wagon Sunday School Class and a former member of Bonham Homemakers Club. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Lee is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Byrd and Rev. John Stapleton. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Keith Lee Sinclair, John Henry Sinclair, Thomas G. Sinclair, Lewis B. Lee,Earl Black and John Bailes. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 10:45 PM to form the honorary escort: Dexter Inman, Greg Walker, Stoney Keith, Oscar Dawkins, Wade Howell, W.J. Frances K. Black
Union, SC

Mrs. Frances Bright Black, age 62 of 232 Lower Eison Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Black was born in Gaffney, SC June 30, 1945, a daughter of the late Travis Bright and Nellie Mae Wylie Bright. She was formerly employed with Conso Products.

Survivors are a daughter: Becky Jennings and husband David; four sons: Tim Black and wife Vonda, Toney Black, Shane Black all of Union and Bobby Black, Jr of Jonesville; a brother, Wayne Bright of Union; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 3:30 PM Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Sunset Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the graveside.

The family is at the home of her son, Tim Black, 127 Bentley Town Rd., Union, SC.

William Joe Canupp
Union, SC

Mr. William Joe Canupp, age 72, husband of Sharon Hakes Canupp of 211 Pine Street, Union, SC died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Canupp was born in Lockhart, SC July 15, 1934, a son of the late James Alton Canupp and Ruby Puckett Canupp. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Canupp was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Canupp was formerly married to the late Patricia Hewitt Canupp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: "Cindy Baldwin and husband Charles of Buffalo and Wendy Hames and husband Rodney of Union; two sons: Landy Canupp and wife Rita and Randy Canupp and wife Candy all of Union; four step-daughters: Laurie Brusseau of Union, Cheryl Rankin of Spartanburg, Janet Bellmore and Julie Adams both of Michigan; a step-son, Keith Brusseau of Michigan; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and one great-step-grandchild, a sister, Ellen Sanders of Ga., three brothers: Clark Canupp of Union, Frank Canupp of Anderson and Tommy Canupp of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 4, 2007 Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Terry Mitchell. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Sara Lorena "Ren" Lambright
Union, SC

Miss Sara Lorena "Ren" Lambright, age 87 of 305 W. Main Street, Union, SC died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Miss Lambright was born in Union, SC March 14, 1920, a daughter of the late Daniel Thomas Lambright and Irene Davis Lambright. She retired from the City of Union Utility Department and was formerly employed with the Clemson Extension Office. Miss Lambright was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was Chairperson of the Board of Stewards and was active in the Sunday School program, the United Methodist Women and was a former choir member. She was also a member of the FCL Club of Clemson Extension Office.

Surviving are a sister, Dot Smoots of Union; a niece, Nancy L. Massey of Woodstock, Ga; two nephews Thomas D. Lambright of Gaffney and Beverly C. Russell of Spartanburg and a number of great-nieces and nephews including Holley Russell Abee of the home.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be J.P. Bailes, III, J.P. Bales, Jr., W.J. Bailes, John Bailes, Jerry Bailes, John Flynn, Tommy Sherbert and Gerald Gregory. Elizabeth P. Hester
Charlotte, NC

Mrs. Elizabeth Perrin Hester, 88, died July 1, 2007 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Hester was born in Union, SC, April 24, 1919, a daughter of the late Etta McDow and Spencer Rice Perrin.

She is survived by her children: Gloria H. Anderson (Vernon), William G. "Bill" Hester (Judy Johns Hester) all of Charlotte, Mary Etta H. Benfield of Statesville, NC, Richard H. "Dick" Hester (Nancy) of Denver, CO and Perrin M. "Mac" Hester also of Charlotte. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Vern Anderson, III (Aliceon), Kathleen A. Barrett (Dan), Mary Perrin A. Vlahoplus (Chris), Emily H. Kelaher (Kevin), Amy H. Rothwell (Matt), Kathy C. Lockman (Dave), Brad Crawford (Betsy), Brian Crawford (April), Rick Hester, Michael Hester, Michelle Hester, Monique Hester, Jason Hester, Jack Hester (Ami), Kimberly Hester; twenty two great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother: the Rev. Frank M. Perrin (Marjorie)of Louisville, KY, their sons, John and Tom and her niece Dodie Perrin of Gaffney. Mrs. Hester was predeceased by a brother, Spencer R. Perrin and a granddaughter, Mary Ellen C. Purser.

Mrs. Hester moved to Charlotte in 1963 and worked at the Charlotte Pipe and Foundry. She retired from Grandmothers Inc. in 1993 and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes for several years until her health failed and she moved to Sharon Towers, the Presbyterian Home at Charlotte, where she as resided since 2005. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sharon Towers for their devoted care.

Mrs. Hester loved her family and her church, Sardis Presbyterian where she was active for many years. A memorial service will be held at Sardis Presbyterian, 11:00 AM Thursday, July 5, 2007. Visitation will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be 4:00 PM Thursday, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Union, SC.

Willard "Wishie" Hines, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. Willard Montgomery "Wishie" Hines, Sr., age 86, husband of Margaret Clark Hines of 117 Bowling Avenue, Union, SC died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Hines was born in Union, SC May 20, 1921, a son of the late J. Lewis Hines and Lois Willard Hines. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken & Company- Midway Plant and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II as a tank driver. Mr. Hines was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Union County School Board, the Union City Council, an Honorary Member of the Union Rotary Club and a member of the American Legion Post #22. Mr. Hines also wrote a column in the Union Daily Times, "Around Town with Wishie" for over twenty-five years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a grandson, Matthew Thomas Hines of Columbia, SC; a granddaughter, Anna Katherine Soto and husband Jeremy of Duncan; two brothers: J.D. Hines of Union and Johnny Hines of Greenville. Mr. Hines was predeceased by a a son, Willard Montgomery "Monty" Hines, Jr, two brothers and a sister.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. John Cribb, Rev. Tommy McManus and Mr. Al Smith.

The following are asked to assemble at the graveside at 1:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort: Joey Hines, Anna and Robert Brown, Mickey Wingo, Al Smith, Dot Holley, Dr. Paul K. Switzer, Pearl Crocker and Dianne Hendricks.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Merle Deason-Thatcher
Cheatham County, TN

Mrs. Merle M. Deason-Thatcher, age 79, of Ashland City, TN, formerly of Oceanside,CA, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents Allen P. Hopkins and Leola Babb Hopkins, her first husband Charles Raymond (Ray) Deason, a retired United States Marine, and her second husband A. Hall Thatcher, M.D., a retired physician. She was also preceded by her brothers, Montague Hopkins and Leon Elmer Hopkins. She is survived by her daughter Sharon (David) Conley of Ashland City, TN, her sons Mike, Gregg, Stan and Ron Thatcher, her sister Peninnah (Roy Lee) Smith, Devieux Vinson, Mary Jane (Carlton) Chastain, grandchildren, David L. Conley, Jr., Jamie Thatcher, Graham Thatcher and Derek Thatcher and two great-grandsons.

Mrs. Thatcher graduated from Metropolitan General Hospital in Nashville where she received her RN degree and continued her career in nursing for 50 years. She has a masters degree in computer science, a degree in In-Service Education and a life-time teaching credential from San Francisco State University and a California state certificate of instructor-trainer of CPR. Mrs. Thatcher also had a degree in fashion design.

While living in California she published a book and taught classes on death and dying and was the Director and founder of a volunteer program called COPING. She and her second husband were co-founders of the Paramedic training program in North San Diego County, CA. After living in Oceanside, CA for 50 years, she relocated to Ashland City, TN in 2006 to be close to family.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 2:00 PM in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville. A visitation with the family was held Friday at the Cheatham County Funeral Home in Ashland City, TN.

Nelson H. Graham
Union, S.C.

Mr. Nelson H. "Nub" Graham, age 75, widower of Leila Jolly Graham, 2311 Lockhart Hwy. Union, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 5, 2007 after an extended illness.

Mr. Graham was born in West Springs, Jun 13, 1932, a son of the late Orin H. and Clara Bell Lancaster Graham. He was a graduate of West Springs High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Graham retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing as a department head after 35 years and was a Mason and Shriner for 55 years.

Surviving are two sons: Christopher Hollis Graham and wife Bonnie of Union, and Robert N. "Bob" Graham and special friend Karen Lawson of the home; a loving sister: Mildred G. Rogers of Union; 5 grandchildren: Shari and Nikki Graham of Union, Joshua Robert Graham of Oxford, NC, Jon-Christopher and Jeremy Graham of Campobello; one great-grandchild, Caleb Scott Graham. Mr. Graham was predeceased by a son David Jolly Graham and a loving sister, Cleo Graham Bennett.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Crystal Dawn "Crickett" Moore

Mrs. Crystal Dawn "Crickett" Moore, age 21, wife of Jonathan Patrick Moore, and infant daughter Amy Lynn Moore, of 240 Lamplighter Dr., Greer, both died Friday, July 6, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Moore was born in Union, August 21, 1985, a daughter of Harvey and Shirley Inman Smith of Union. She graduated Union County Schools and attended USC-U. Mrs. Moore was previously employed with Mc Donald’s in Union.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two sisters: Debbie Edwards and Courtney Blitchington; one brother: J.J. Griffin; grandparents: Daniel and Peggy Inman all of Union; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Terry and Barbara Moore of Greer; one sister-in-law: Tonya Moore of Anderson one brother-in-law: T.J. Moore of Union; one nephew and two nieces. Mrs. Moore was predeceased by a daughter, Gabrielle Queen and a sister: Tammy Lynn Inman and a brother-in-law Scott Edwards, Sr..

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Roger Roof and Rev. Jerry Hargrove. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Jones B. Cargil

Rev. Jones B. Cargill, age 78, husband of Shirley Maxine Hendrix Cargill of 252 Pineland Rd., Union, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Rev. Cargill was born in Pacolet, July 2, 1929 a son of the late Thomas Julian "Bootsie" Cargill and Lois Durham Cargill. He was a graduate of Union High School and the Southern Methodist College. Rev. Cargill had retired after 30 years with Bell South and was also a retired Southern Methodist Minister having served Bethlehem Southern Methodist Church in Holly Hill his last years. Rev. Cargill was also a veteran of the Korean War having served in the US Air Force and was also a Mason.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter: Mary Beth Bower and husband Roy A. of Montgomery AL; one son: Thomas M. Cargill of the home; one brother: Albert R. Cargill and wife Barbara of Aurora CO; 3 grandchildren: Michael L. Hinsey and wife Lori, Aaron W. Hinsey and wife Amy and Trista Bouret; 4 great-grandchildren: Amara Hinsey, Storm Hinsey, Valerie Hinsey, and Noah Hinsey. Rev. Cargill was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Foster.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. E. LeGrande Adams, Rev. Marvin Clark, and Rev. William Adams. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ernest "Twig" Adams, Jr. Don Adams, Gene Adams, Neal McDade, Ralph Greer and Matt Wiggins.

Mr. Herbert Lee Bogan, age 81, of 4274 Buffalo West Hwy., Jonesville, SC died Monday, July 9, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Bogan was born in West Springs, SC November 27, 1925, a son of the late Issac Covington Bogan and Mamie Mae Hyatt Bogan. He was a graduate of West Springs High School, retried from the S.C. Department of Transportation, was also a Certified Public Accountant and a former member of the Woodmen of the World. Mr. Bogan was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church for sixty-six years and was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are a daughter, Dianne Burgess and husband Dennis of West Springs; a son, Lee Covington Bogan and wife Teresa Anderson Bogan of Portland, TN; a sister, Elsie Mae West and husband Bert of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Jessica Taylor, Michael Bogan, Whitney Bogan, Daniel Burgess and Michael Burgess and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Bogan was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Christopher Bogan.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson and Chaplain Jim Hager. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie Ammons Kitchens, age 74, of 196 Alexander Rd., Whitmire, SC died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Kitchens was born in Whitmire, SC November 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Sam Ammons and Alice Gibson Ammons. She retired from the U.S. Forestry Service and was formerly employed with Wal-Mart of Newberry. Mrs. Kitchens was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Anita F. Kinard of the home; a son, Ricky Silvers; three brothers: Jack Ammons, Harvey Ammons and Ray Ammons all of Whitmire; two grandchildren: Ricky ‘Gene" Silvers, Jr and Kaci Trammell and one great-grandchild, Kassidy Trammell. Mrs. Kitchens was predeceased by a son, Ernest Silvers and a sister, Katie A. Stone.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Kitchen’s Family Home, 196 Alexander Rd., Whitmire, SC conducted by Rev. Brandon Sinclair and Rev. Dewayne Phillips.

Visitation will be held immediately following the services at the graveside.

Mrs. Kathleen Bentley Hutchings, age 92 of 556 Bentley Town Rd., Union, SC died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Hutchings was born in Union, SC October 18, 1914, a daughter of the late William and Maggie Farr Bentley. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School, retired from Milliken & Co-Cotton Blossom Plant and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Janie Bentley of the home and Betty Webber of Union; two brothers: W.F. Bentley and Rev. Jesse Bentley both of Union; a son-in-law, Lawrence "Monk" Vanderford of Union; a grandson, Lemond Vanderford; two great-grandchildren: Kayla Vanderford and Caleb Vanderford all of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hutchings was predeceased by a daughter, Jacquelyn Vanderford and a sister, Mildred McSwain.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Tim Huckaby. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Bertha Elizabeth Lawson Lancaster

Mrs. Bertha Elizabeth Lawson Lancaster, age 97 of 113 College Street, Union, SC, widow of Claudy Ray Lancaster died Friday, July 13, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Lancaster was born in Union County, SC July 11, 1910, a daughter of the late James Monroe Lawson and Myra Ellen Smith Lawson. She retired from United Merchants- Union Plant and was a faithful member of Unity United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted.

Survivors are three daughters: Helen Austin of Union, Brenda Adams and husband Boyd, Jr of Jonesville, and Doris Addison and husband Raymond of Union; two sons: George Reid Lancaster and wife Mavis Collins and James Claudy Lancaster and wife Shirley all of Union; a sister, Vera Trammel of Union; a niece reared in the home, Sarah Jackson of Monks Corner, SC; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lancaster was predeceased by five sisters: Irene Adams, Thelma Adams, Evelyn Lancaster Vaughan, Willie Brewington and Bessie Vaughan; four brothers: James Vernon "Slim" Lawson, William Gettys Lawson, Woodrow Wilson Lawson and Albert "Bud" Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 15, 2007 at Unity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Rev. Robert Jarvis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Kevin Lancaster, Mike Lancaster, Derrick Lancaster, John Adams, Jason Adams, Kevin Montgomery, Tim Austin and Jeff Austin. John "Jack" Flynn
Union, SC

Mr. John Sartor "Jack" Flynn of Union, SC was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at Mary Black Hospital after an extended illness. Born on February 14, 1932, in Union County, SC.

Jack was a lifelong resident of Union County. He graduated from Union High School, the University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina School of Law. After being admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1958, he practiced law as a solo practitioner from 1958 until 1994 in Union County. He served as the City of Union Recorder, Public Defender, Assistant Solicitor, and County Attorney. He was elected to serve as Judge of the Family Court, sixteenth judicial circuit where he served until he retired in 1998.

Judge Flynn was very involved in his community and had taught part-time for the University of South Carolina in Union for ten years in the fields of Accounting and Economics. He served two years in the U.S. Army and three years in the 412th Military Government Group Active Reserve Unit. He was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, the Union County Bar Association, and served as president of the Union County Bar. He was also a member of Union County Chamber of Commerce and served as its president. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he had served as a member of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and a Sunday School Teacher for the Men’s Class. He was a member of the Union Rotary Club where he had served as a Director and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Masons, Shrine Club, Elks Club, Union County Country Club, and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years Nora Alston "Nonie" Flynn, daughters Alston Flynn Lippert and Anne Macon Flynn both of Columbia, SC; granddaughters Alston Lee and Catherine Lippert; sister Frances Flynn Mims of Anderson, SC; and brother Ned Flynn and wife Sherry of Kennesaw, Georgia; nieces and nephews James Butler of Spring Texas; Linda and Mike Mims of Anderson, SC; Phillip Flynn and wife Karen of Barnwell, SC; Nancy Flynn Hope and husband Robert Hope of Union, SC; Ned Flynn of Atlanta, Ga; Paul Flynn and wife Karen of Arizona; and Ann Flynn Jacobs of Kennesaw, Georgia. He was predeceased by his parents Phillip Dunne and Edith Smith Flynn; sister Edith Flynn Butler and brother Phil Flynn.

Judge Flynn and family are especially grateful to his wonderful and loving care givers: Judy Guyton, Kim Knox, Donna Rice, Wallace Rice and Ann Sprouse.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Grace United Methodist Church; the Flynn Family Scholarship Fund of the University of South Carolina School of Law, or the Jack and Nonie Flynn Scholarship Fund of the University of South Carolina Union.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 3:00 PM at Grace United Methodist Church in Union conducted by Rev. Gary Byrd and Rev. Tony Gavalas. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will he held at the church immediately following the interment

Opal Vaughan Stines

Mrs. Opal Vaughan Stines, age 86, widow of Paul Stines formally of Brittany Manor went to be with the Lord July 13, 2007 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stines was born in Union County January 4, 1921, a daughter of the late William Smith Vaughan Jr. and Maude Palmer Vaughan Stines. A graduate of Kelly Pinckney School, she was of the Christian faith and a faithful worker for God.

Survivors are two daughters: Donnis Henderson and husband Mike, and Cynthia Stines Winter, of Union; two sisters: Mildred Vaughan Jolly and Lucille Vaughan Harris of Union; seven nieces: Karen V. Whitehead and husband Charles of Pacolet, Beverly J Funderburk of Saluda, Ruth Quinn, Wanda J. Wells and husband Howard, Betty H Pridemore and husband Earl, and Peggy H. Branch and husband Rev. Robert Branch all of Union, Judy M. Zatarain and husband Manuel of Tampa, Fla.; eight nephews: Francis (Buddy) Vaughan and wife Kay, Stanley Vaughan and wife Gay of Jonesville; William Jolly and wife Martha, and James Harris of Union, Donald Rogers and wife Marilyn, Ronald Rogers and wife Rosa of Spartanburg Gary Morris and wife Joann of Chester, Dennis Morris and wife of Fla. and several grand-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Stines was predeceased by four brothers: Willie Vaughan, Arthur Vaughan, Earl Vaughan, and Isaac Vaughan.

A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be William Jolly, Buddy Vaughan, Stanley Vaughan, Jonathan Vaughan, and James Harris.

Visitation will be held Monday night July 16, 2007 from 6 till 8 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Susie Mae Vanderford Lemons, age 87, widow of Rev. Allen Lemons of 497 Summit Drive, Lockhart, SC went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 18, 2007 after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Lemons was born in Lockhart, SC, December 19, 1919, a daughter of the late Posey Vanderford and Georgia Sealey Vanderford. She was the former owner and operator of the Lockhart Café during the 1940's. Mrs. Lemons was a devoted and loving mother and a faithful wife who actively shared in the ministry with her husband in several South Carolina churches. She was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Edna Sue McKee and husband Jerry of Buffalo; two sons: Rev. Stephen Lemons and wife Jennie of Union and Phillip Lemons and wife Anna of Lockhart; a brother, I.G. Vanderford of Buffalo; five grandchildren: Susan Gilstrap, Brian Harris, Scott Lemons, Jason Lemons and Kimberly Eubanks and ten great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dorothy Lanier Tiner, age 66, wife of Kenneth Tiner of 1124 Blackstock Rd., Pauline, SC died Monday, July 23, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Tiner was born in Union, SC May 20, 1941, a daughter of the late Ansel and Marie Knox Lanier. She retired from textiles and was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Rose Lipsey and Debra Atkins; four sons: Herbert Lipsey, Jr and wife Debbie, John Lipsey and wife Trudy, Jerry Lipsey and wife Janie and Chuck Lipsey and wife Pam; a grandson, Charles Coty Roberts reared in the home; eighteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs.Tiner was predeceased by a son, Michael Lipsey; a grandson, Roscoe Lipsey; a sister and four brothers: Frances Lanier, Bobby Lanier, J.C. Lanier, Frankie Lanier and Tommy Lanier.

Mr. Todd Lewis Purkey, age 44, of 921 Gaffney Hwy, Jonesville, SC died Sunday, July 22, 2007 at the Medical University of S.C. in Charleston, SC after a brief illness.

Mr. Purkey was born in Union, SC, August 11, 1962, a son of Ronnie T. Purkey and Gayle Petty Purkey of Jonesville. He was employed with the S.C. School for the Deaf & Blind as a residential advisor and a member of Oakbrook Community Church. Mr. Purkey was very active in his church and community all his life.

Surviving in addition to his parents with whom he made his home are his paternal grandparents, Agnes and Lewis Purkey of Jonesville, two aunts and one uncle and numerous cousins. Mr. Purkey was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Claude and Katie Buice Petty.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess.

Visitation will be held immediately after the services at the graveside.

Mrs. Dorothy Finney Wilbanks of Whitmire, SC, widow of Oliver G. Wilbanks, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Wilbanks was born May 1, 1929, a daughter of the late John Finney and Loraine Fulmer Finney. She retired from J.P. Stevens, Whitmire Plant and was a member of the Church of God of Whitmire.

Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Ammons and husband Johnny Ray of Whitmire; a brother, Thomas Finney of Columbia; two grandchildren: Tammy Clayton and husband William and Jonathan Ammons all of Whitmire; three grandchildren: David Clayton, Michael Clayton and Jonathan Ammons, Jr.

Funeral services were held 4:00 PM Monday, July 23, 2007 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Kenny Weaver. Burial was in the Whitmire Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Kent Prather, Todd Frye, John Bullard, Roger Davis, Charles Griffith and Ronnie Garner. Honorary Pallbearer was Melvin Hipp.

Mr. Faye Jackson "Bud" Inman, age 77, of 1020 Barnado Rd., Union, SC, widower of Ruth Adams Inman died Monday, July 23, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Inman was born in Union, SC September 6, 1929, a son of the late Will and Mae Hamm Inman. He was a retired farmer and of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Inman was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Tommy Inman and wife Frances of Chester, SC; a granddaughter, Susan Henson of Sharon, SC and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Inman was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers: Evadell Brewington, Lucille Gregory, John Inman, Jake Inman and Billy Inman.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

Active pallbearers will be Allen Wilson, Steve Berry, Glenn Berry, Carl " Knocker" Inman, Daman Vess and Jason Darby.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 PM at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

States Rights Aycock
Jonesville native

States Rights Aycock, 73, of Wickliffe, KY, passed away on July 25, 2007 at his home.

Born in Jonesville, he was the son of the late Edmund E. and Lula Fowler Aycock.

Mr. Aycock retired from the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Wickliffe Masonic Lodge 625, the Scottish Rite; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5409 in Bardwell; American Legion 0422 in Winchester, IL; the Disabled American Veteran of Puducah; and the Shriners in Madisonville.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Bridgman Grimmitt Aycock; one daughter Ann M. Bates of Calvert City, KY; two sons, States Rights Aycock III of Lovelaceville, KY and Scott Aycock of Reidland, KY; one sister Nancy A. Morris Garner of Jonesville; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are four stepchildren.

Mr. Aycock was predeceased by his first wife, Beverly K. Kinsey Aycock; one sister, Deda A. Ruscitto; and one brother Albert H. Aycock.

Private graveside services will be held. Expressions of sympathy may be made through a charity of ones choice.

Mrs. Frances Lovelace Prince Wilbanks, age 88, widow of Jim Wilbanks formerly of McClure Street, Union, SC died Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Wilbanks was born in Rutherfordton, NC October 30, 1918. She retired from Milliken & Co-Monarch Plant and also operated a Beauty Salon in her home. Mrs. Wilbanks was a member of Westside Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher for over sixty years. Mrs. Wilbanks was first married to the late Gordon Prince.

Surviving are a son, Jamie Vaughn and wife Amanda; a brother, Calvin Lovelace; a granddaughter, Jordan Vaughn all of Union and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, July 27, 2007 at Westside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Walter Bishop Alverson

Mr. Walter Bishop Alverson, age 80, husband of Elsie Lee Gregory Alverson of 2698 Carlisle -Santuc Hwy., Union, SC died Saturday morning July 28, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Alverson was born in Biltmore, NC, Nov. 20, 1926 a son of the late William Giles Alverson , Sr and Colleen Bishop Alverson. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army infantry. He was retired as a supervisor with United Merchants, Union Plant. Mr. Alverson was an Eagle Scout and Past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #42; he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where he served as a Deacon and was member of the Sam Cain Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter Reba A. Turner and husband, David of Union, 3 grandsons;

David Turner, Jr. And wife Patti of Union, Andy Turner and wife Connie of Irmo, SC, and Richard Turner and wife Tracey of Charleston, SC; 3 grandchildren, Nick Turner, Bryson Turner and Sullivan Turner; 2 Nephews, William G. Alverson,III and wife Peggy of York, Pennsylvania and Ben Alverson and wife Becky of Union.

Mr. Hugh Warren Moore, age 57, of 1201 Old Buncombe Rd., Union, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Moore was born in Birmingham, AL, August 21, 1949, a son of the late Wiley Roy Moore and Margaret Beatrice Franks Moore. He was a retired residential painter.

Surviving are two daughters: Shannon Moore with whom he made his home, and Sharon Moore also of the home; three sons: Gene Moore, Dewayne Moore and Thomas Moore all of Alabama; his mother-in-law: Joe Anne Holladay of Union, and a number of grand and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 7:00 PM Thursday, August 2, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carroll Caldwell.

Cecile Lee Hill
Union, SC

Mr. Cecile Lee Hill, age 61, husband of Mary Pelham Hill of 1934 Santuck-Carlisle Hwy, Union, SC died Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hill was born in Buffalo, SC, May 6, 1946, a son of the late Fred Hill and Dorothy Cooper Hill. He retired from Union County Sheriff’s Department and attended Grace Baptist Church in Whitmire. Mr. Hill was an avid motorcyclist having ridden in many poker runs for various charities.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jennifer Coker and husband Mark of Buffalo; a step-daughter, Amy Fowler and husband Jimmy of Union; a step-son, James Clark of Jonesville; a sister, Rita Prince; two grandchildren: Kelsey Coker and T.J. Coker both of Buffalo; two step-grandchildren: Dillon Fowler of Union and Jakob Clark of the home.

A celebration of life service will be held 7:00 PM Friday, July 27, 2007 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Travis King. Visitation will be held immediately following the service in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials received by the family, in memory of Cecile Lee Hill, will be donated to a local charity of his family’s choice. The family is at the home, 1934 Santuck-Carlisle Hwy., Union, SC, 29379.
