Mrs. Nell Alexander Jenkins, age 71, wife of William G. Jenkins of 208 Belvue Drive, Union, SC died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Jenkins was born in Goshen Hill, SC March 7, 1937, a daughter of the late Lester L. Alexander and Frances Wilbanks Alexander. She was a graduate of Whitmire High School and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Thomas L. Jenkins of Union; a sister, Dove Plemons of Whitmire; three grandchildren: Zack Jenkins, Kurt Jenkins and Tonya Moss all of Union; two great-grandchildren: Ally Moss and Anna Moss both of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jenkins was predeceased by a daughter, Glenda Lynn Jenkins and a brother, Thomas Alexander.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Steve Young and Rev. Austin Bennett. A private burial will follow.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:30 PM Wednesday in the chapel prior to the service.

Mark F. Johnson
Union, SC

Mr. Mark F. Johnson, age 42 of 231 Bird St., Union, SC died Friday, November 28, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Johnson was born in Union, SC February 21, 1966, a son of Mary Bigham Johnson of Union and the late Cecil F. Johnson. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was employed with Dollar General. Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two brothers: Johnny Johnson of Cowpens and Kyle Hamilton of Sharon, SC; an aunt and uncle, Shirley and Charles Sanders of Union.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Guy Langston.

Memorials may be made to the Mark F. Johnson Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 293 Union, SC 29379.

Lt.Col. (Ret) William L. Boling
Veteran

Lt. Col. (Ret) William L. Boling, age 76, husband of Susan Allen Boling of 703 Marion Sims Drive, Lancaster, SC died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at his home.

Lt. Col. Boling was born in Union, SC May 7, 1932, a son of the late Grace L. Boling. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and the University of Nebraska. Lt. Col. Boling was a thirty-two year Veteran of the U.S. Army having served two tours in the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #244 of Lockhart where he was a Past Worshipful Master and was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church of Bayfield, Co. Lt. Col. Boling served a very distinguished military career as shown in the following honors: Combat Infantry Badge; Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars; National Defense Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal with 4th Oak Leaf Clusters; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Point Services Commendation Medal; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; Armed Forces Honor Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Ten Year Service.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Jefferson L. Boling of Ignacio, Co; a step-daughter, Elizabeth Garner Farinella of Wilmington, NC; two grandchildren: Margaret Casey Farinella and Catherine Elizabeth Farinella both of Wilmington, NC; an aunt, Edith Wilburn of Union and his beloved dog, Garvey. Lt. Col. Boling was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Boling.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Bill Sumner with Military and Masonic Rites.

The following are asked to assemble at the graveside at 10:45 AM to form the honorary escort: Members of Masonic Lodge #244.

Linda S. Medford
Union, SC

Ms. Linda Spencer Kirby Medford, age 52, of 146 Old Saw Mill Rd. Union died Thursday, December 4, 2008 at the home of her daughter.

Ms. Medford was born in Union County, May 13, 1956 a daughter of the late Brady Lee Spencer and Marlene Terry Spencer. She was a graduate of Union High School. Ms. Medford was of the Baptist faith and had previously worked for Conso Products.

Survivors are a daughter: Roxanne Leigh Kirby Gowan of Buffalo; two sisters: Sandra K. Spencer of Whitmire and Wanda Sue Howell of Union; a brother: Mark Scott Spencer of Union; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active Pallbearers will be Michael Scott Kendrick, Kevin Lee Kendrick, Bradley O’Neal Kendrick, William Stanley Whitmire, Terry O’Neil Howell and Dennis Owens Howell.

Donnie Lee Willard
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Donnie Lee Willard, age 62, of 620 S. Main Street, Jonesville, SC died Thursday, December 4, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Willard was born in Cowpens, SC November 11, 1946, a son of the late Floyd Lee Willard and Margaret Kingsmore Willard. He was a former construction worker and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Linda "Mel" Brock and husband Brian and Wanda K. Robinson and husband Larry; three sons: Terry Lee Willard and wife Angie, Donnie Lee Baldwin and Roger Dale Willard all of Union; two step-children: Teresa Young and husband John and Tommy Millwood and wife Nancy all of Jonesville; seven grandchildren: Kirsten Willard, Ashley Brock, Brandon Brock, Roger Willard, Ashley Robinson, Donald Larry Robinson, II and Jonathan Willard; one great-grandchild; six step-grandchildren; three sisters: Barbara McKinney and husband A.C. of Jonesville, Brenda Groves and husband Joe and Kim Knox all of Buffalo; two brothers: Tommy Willard and wife Dottie and Kenny Willard all of Buffalo; a special niece, Rhonda Hudson and special nephews, Jamie and Larry LeMaster and a number of other nieces and nephews. Mr. Willard was predeceased by a sister, Carol Harrison.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Willard’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Lottie Smith Blakely
Formerly of Union

Mrs. Lottie Smith Blakely, age 100, formerly of Union, widow of Alexander Ross Blakely died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Lowman Home, White Rock, SC.

Mrs. Blakely was born in Union, SC, September 13, 1908, daughter of the late John D. Smith and Fannie Hancock Smith. She was a graduate of Union High School and a member of Union United Methodist Church, Irmo, SC where she was a member of Pauline Younginer Sunday School Class. Mrs. Blakely was also formerly of Greenwood and Irmo and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. As a loving mother, grandmother and mother-in-law who cherished her family, Mrs. Blakely was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Blakely Sheely and husband J.W. "Skip" Sheely of Irmo; three grandchildren: Blakely Elliott Sheely of Irmo, Elizabeth Sheely Lindermann and husband John of Rock Hill and Anna Ross Sheely of Irmo and four nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 8, 2008 at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

William Murray Parkins
Sharon, SC

Mr. William Murray Parkins, age 80, husband of Eunice Parker Parkins, of 3543 Turkey Creek Drive, Sharon, SC went home to be with the Lord, Monday, December 8, 2008.

Mr. Parkins was born in Lockhart, SC, November 4, 1928, a son of the late Claude William Parkins and Neeley Frances Clack Parkins. He retired from Duke Power-Catawba Plant; had previously worked as a brick mason for twenty-two years with Daniel Construction and was a member of Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon, an Elder of the Church and Superintendent of Sunday School. Mr. Parkins was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Parkins loved farming and working with his cattle.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-five years are two sons: William LaDon "Donnie" Parkins and wife Lynn and James Ronald "Ronnie" Parkins; a daughter, Elaine Parkins Dantzler and husband Buddy all of Lockhart; five grandchildren: Destiney Pigman and husband Eric, Jondavid Parkins and wife Jessica, Jared Parkins, Jordan Parkins and Justin Parkins and one great-grandchild, Cole Harrison Pigman; a sister, Carolyn Scott of Sharon; three brothers: Roy Parkins of Sharon, Jimmy Parkins of Jonesville and Jeff Parkins of Sharon. Mr. Parkins was predeceased by four brothers: Tommy, Jack, Frank and Ervin Parkins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Harold Roth and Rev. Ned Warstall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:00-1:45 PM Wednesday in the church prior to the service.

Nicky Dewayne Roark
Buffalo, SC

Mr. Nicky Dewayne Roark, age 53, of 125 Dana Tara Lane, Buffalo, SC died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg, SC.

Mr. Roark was born in Union, SC January 27, 1955, a son of Geraldine Liner Roark of Union and the late George William Roark. He was owner and operator of Hometown Exterminating Company and was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts. Mr. Roark was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Steve Roark and wife Betty of Buffalo; a niece, Tara Shetley and husband David of Union; a nephew, Adam Roark of Spartanburg; three great-nieces and two great-nephews; special friends, Freddie Vanderford and Debra Hyatt and a special pet, Harley Roark.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 12, 2008 at Sunset Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Roger Estes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service and also at the home of his brother, Steve and Betty Roark, 499 Gist Bridge Rd., Buffalo, SC 29321.

Vonzie Beatrice Hamilton
Formerly of Buffalo

Ms. Vonzie Beatrice Hamilton, age 80, formerly of Buffalo, SC died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Oakmont of Union.

Ms. Hamilton was born in Lancaster, SC, April 3, 1928, a daughter of the late Varnell Lee Caldwell and Fannie Outten Caldwell. She was previously employed with United Merchants - Buffalo Plant and Wambell. Ms. Hamilton was a member of the Greater Union Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Rose B. Johnson and husband Buddy of Myrtle Beach and Ann Turner and husband William of Buffalo; a son, David Leroy Hamilton and wife Ramonda of Buffalo; five grandchildren: Stephanie, Cecilla, Anthony, Daniel and Luke. Ms. Hamilton was predeceased by a sister and a brother.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, December 12, 2008 at Great Union Church conducted by Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Sinclair, Jason Yarborough, Harold Coleman, James Fleming, David Leroy Hamilton and Ray Lee.

Mrs. Beckey Veal Petty, age 50, of 313 Beauregard St., Clinton, widow of Timothy D. Petty, Sr., died Thursday December 11, 2008 at the Laurens County Hospital.

Mrs. Petty was born in Commerce, GA, January 17, 1958 a daughter of the late Jack Veal, Sr. and Pearl Price Veal Rose. She was a member of New Vision Tabernacle of Clinton.

Surviving are a daughter: Laura Petty; a son: Timothy d. Petty Jr.; a granddaughter: Gracian Petty all of the home; one brother Jack Veal, Jr. of Irmo and serveral nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 14, 2008 at New Vision Tabernacle of Clinton conducted by Rev. Bob Tate and Rev. Tom Padgett. Burial will be in Rosmont Cemetery in Clinton.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church.

Gladys W. Pierce

Mrs. Gladys Mae Woody Pierce, age 91, widow of James Anderson Pierce died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Pierce was born in Catoosa, GA, July 19, 1917 a daughter of the late Oliver Watt Woody and Minnie Lee Smith Woody. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son: Jimmy Lee Pierce, Sr. and wife Betty of Carlisle; one sister: Virginia Pierce of Chattanooga, TN; two grandsons: Jimmy Lee Pierce, Jr. of Santuck and Tony Pierce of Union. Mrs. Pierce was predeceased by three sisters and one brother.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Georgia.

Phyllis F. Youngblood
Joensville, S.C.

Mrs. Phyllis Elaine Fleming "Doodle" Youngblood, age 74, widow of Roy M. Youngblood of 122 Park Dr., Jonesville, SC, died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Youngblood was born in Pacolet, January 31, 1934 a daughter of the late Vernon and Bertha Parker Fleming. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. in Jonesville and an active volunteer in community events. Mrs. Youngblood was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Debbie Youngblood and friend Steve Ayers of Jonesville and Lisa Youngblood and friend William Moss of West Springs; two sons: Gene "Bean" Youngblood and wife Donna of Union and Ray Youngblood and wife Phyllis of Jonesville; two sisters: Geraldine Mitchell and Peggy Padgett both of Pacolet; one brother: Sam Fleming of Florida; six grandchildren: Jim Greer and wife Nicole, Chad Maness and friend Jennifer Keisler; Rocky Maness, Brooke Youngblood and friend Jason Garrett, Donna Youngblood and Brian Youngblood all of Jonesville; 8 great-grandchildren: Trey Maness, Madison Maness, Mason Greer, Cody Youngblood, Chance Youngblood, Destinie Davis, Kaylee Davis and Austin Marlow. Mrs. Youngblood was predeceased by two brothers, Willie and Bud Fleming and a great-granddaughter: Harley Maness.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 14, 2008 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd and Rev. Shep Bevis. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jim Gault, Robbie Faucett, Mitch Trammell, Josh Addis, Clint Goings and Steve Fleming.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the chapel.

Clarence Hope Dabbs
Lockhart, SC

Mr. Clarence Hope Dabbs, age 88, of 119 South 5th St. Lockhart, widower of Nellie Gibson Dabbs, died Saturday , December 13, 2008 in Spartanburg Regional Health Care System after a time of declining health.

Mr. Dabbs was born in Lockhart, a son of the late James Dabbs and Rhoda Millwood Dabbs. He was retired from Milliken Lockhart Plant as a supervisor. He was a veteran of WWII and served with the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church and was a volunteer at Oakmont Nursing Home. He spent his lifetime helping and caring for others. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are 2 daughters; Gayle Garner and husband Wendell of Lockhart and Vangie Eaddy and husband E. J. of Olanta, SC., Grandchildren; Rodney H. Gibson of Lockhart and special friend Dee Rusnak of New Jersey, Duane Gibson and wife Amanda of Union, Dean Gibson and wife Kelly of Union, Kelvin Vause and wife Darlene of Columbia; a grandaughter; Tonya Jordan and husband Michael of Columbia; great grandchildren; Malachi Gibson, Kelly Ulmer, Kacie Vause, Devan Jordan and Alyssa Jordan; special friends, Darrell and Roseann Jones of Shelby and his beloved dog Sissy, also a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday December 16, 2008 at the Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop and Rev. Frank Cantrell. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active Pallbearers will be Jack Hanna, Jeff Roberts, Eddie Gibson, Steve Gibson, Howard Kerr and Olin Dabbs. Honorary Pallbearers will be Staff of Metro Care and Darrell Jones, Nurses and Staff of 5 West Spartanburg Regional and Union Dialysis Center.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 9:00.

Ralph P. Woodward, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. Ralph P. Woodward, Jr, age 60, husband of Shirley S. Woodward of 221 Glendale Road, Union, SC died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Woodward was born in Union, SC May 21, 1948, a son of the late Ralph P. Woodward, Sr and Miriam Vinson Woodward. He was a 1966 graduate of Union High School and was employed as a sales consultant with Olan Mills, Inc.-Church Directory Division. He was a former manager of Life of Virginia in Union. Mr. Woodward was a member of First Baptist Church, Hejaz Shrine Temple, Union Shrine Club, Union Masonic Lodge #75 and served as Commissioner on City of Union Housing Authority. He was a Past Director of Union County Chamber of Commerce and Past President of Union Association of Life Underwriters.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Meg Woodward Bruce and husband Tradd and a granddaughter Caroline Bruce all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sara Jane Davis McAbee, age 83 of 301 Bruce O. Wilson Road, Union, SC, widow of James Arthur McAbee, Sr died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. McAbee was born in Union County, SC August 5, 1925, a daughter of the late William P. Davis and Delphia Mae Hooper Davis. She was a retired textile worker and was a member of Union Church of Christ. Mrs. McAbee was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters: Pamela Gossett of N. Augusta, SC, Marsha Royster and husband Kenneth of Union and Debra Lawrence and husband Jim of Atlanta, Ga; a son, James A. "Sonny" McAbee, Jr and wife Nancy of Greenville; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. McAbee was predeceased by a sister, Flora Crosby and four brothers, Leroy, Dewey, Clyde and Jim Davis.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Minister Richard Carlson and Rev. Jamie McAbee. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Dustan Gregory, Chris Gossett, Chase Lawrence, Adrian Lawrence and Justin McAbee.

Billy G. Morris
Formerly of Union

Billy G. Morris, Sr. husband of Sylvia Fleming Morris of 442 Barron Drive, Clarkesville, GA entered into eternal peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 17th, 2008 at his home during his sleep. As a grateful multiple organ recipient, Mr. Morris fought a long and courageous battle for many years. An unexpected cancer, however, ended his brave fight only twelve days after diagnosis.

Mr. Morris was born in Union, SC, October 30, 1938, son of Ruth M. McGowan of Kingston, New York and the late Clifton L. McGowan. He was reared in the loving home of his grandparents, the late Thomas and Thaddie Morris of Union, South Carolina. A graduate of Union High School, he later received a degree from Massey Business College in Atlanta, GA. Mr. Morris retired as manager of Database Administration for the Georgia Department of Revenue. He also taught Computer Programming at Atlanta College and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarkesville, GA. Mr. Morris was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Major James W. Morris of the U.S. Army and Billy G. Morris, Jr. and his wife Melissa of Lawrenceville, GA and their three children: Jeff, Daniel and Jennifer Morris. He is also survived by two sisters; Pat Escoe (husband John) of Belton, SC and Judy Aidala of Kingston, NY. Aunts; Annie Mae Bradley of Rock Hill, SC; Doris Morris of Union, SC; and Lib Smith (Mrs. Al Smith) also of Union, SC who is truly a sister of his heart.

Billy was a quiet and loving person who will always be loved and cherished by his wife, sons, and family. He loved the outdoors, was a gifted craftsman and a loving husband and father. He will remain in our hearts forever.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Bill Cashion of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Clarkesville, GA. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening, Dec 19th at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home in Union, SC. Pallbearers will be Mr. Morris’s sons Billy G. Morris Jr. and Major James W. Morris; Grandsons Jeffrey and Daniel Morris; Childhood friends William "Junior" Vaughn Jr. and James Lancaster, both of Union, SC.

Luther Virgil Frost
Formerly of Union

Mr. Luther Virgil Frost, age 71, husband of Aleene Gilmer Self Frost of 8220 Sixth Street, Boiling Springs, SC died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Frost was born in Union, SC July 7, 1937, a son of the late Luther Franklin Frost and Ora Lucile Parham Frost. He retired as Lieutenant with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Frost was a member of First Baptist Church of Valley Falls and was a former member of Westside Baptist Church in Union. He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed. Mr. Frost was first married to the late Ann Conlon Frost.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Darrell Frost and wife Dee Dee of Woodruff and Gary T. Frost and wife Dede of Spartanburg; three step-children: Chris Self and wife Kandi of Dayton, TN, Cindy Hardin and husband Mark of Boiling Springs and Jody Self and wife Jan of Greer; four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; three brothers: Joel, Ronnie and Lewis Frost all of Union. Mr. Frost was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Thompson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 21, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Valley Falls conducted by Dr. John Lancaster, Jr and Rev. Phil Welchel. Interment will be held 3:45 PM at Union Memorial Gardens, Union, SC with Military Honors.

The following grandsons and nephews will serve as active pallbearers: Aaron Frost, Rhett Hardin, Mason Sanders, Ethan Hardin, Cody Self, Paul Frost, Joel Frost, Jr. and Ray Williamson.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Clarence Douglas "Doug" Smith, age 91, of 1453 Sardis Road, Union, SC, widower of Pauline Lane Smith died Monday, December 22, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, SC May 30, 1917, a son of the late Clarence Smith and Lizzie Greer Smith. He retired from Milliken & Company - Excelsior Plant and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Smith was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Keenagers Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Smith Hailman and husband Gene of Charleston; a son, John Douglas Smith and wife Sharon of Charleston; a sister, Thelma Smith Lane of Union; five grandchildren: Holly Hailman Robertson and husband Rick, Troy Douglas Smith, Buffie Greer Smith Copeland and husband Jeff, LaPaula Hailman Williams and husband Brad and Carrie Hailman O’Brian and husband Kevin and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Carol Smith; two sisters: Myrtle Smith Cudd and Gladys Smith Byrd and a brother, William Smith.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Herbert C. Garrett, Jr. and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

Mr. Gerald Walter Greene, age 74, husband of Sarah Faulks Greene of 207 Arthur Street, Union died December 26, 2008 at Golden Living Center in Hendersonville, NC.

Mr. Greene was born in Union, March 3, 1935 a son of the late Walter Francis Greene and Gladys Sullivan Greene. He worked for Greer Exxon and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Greene was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, December 29, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Arthur F. Cooksey, Jr.

August 22, 1940 – December 26, 2008

Arthur (Art) Francis Cooksey, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home at 404 Wilson Avenue, Union, S.C. on Friday, December 26, 2008. Mr. Cooksey is the loving son of Catherine Brooks Cooksey and the late Arthur Francis Cooksey, Sr. He is survived by his only child Arthur Francis Cooksey, III, his loving brother James Judson Cooksey, Sr. and sister-in-law Elizabeth Johnson Cooksey, and two nephews James Cooksey Jr., and John A. Cooksey, paternal aunt Hazel Rector as well as many loving cousins.

Arthur Cooksey was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He served his country in the United States Air Force after university. Mr. Cooksey was a lifetime member of Grace Methodist Church in Union. He left Union in the early sixties and went on to a highly successful career in sales and sales management with companies such as The Suzuki Motor Corporation, Kawasaki and Universal Underwriters. Mr. Cooksey embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and owned and operated his own company, Spring Green, for sixteen years in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

Upon retirement in 2006 Mr. Cooksey moved back to Union, South Carolina to be closer to his beloved mother, Catherine Cooksey. He was a member and then vice-president of the Union Lions Club, volunteered his time to Meals on Wheels, and thoroughly enjoyed his participation in the Boogaloo Folklife Productions Playhouse.

Funeral services will be held at Grace Methodist Church, 201 West South Street on Wednesday, December 31 at 11:00 o’clock am. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, December 30, at Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 W. South Street from five pm until seven pm. Funeral Services will be conducted by Reverends David Kaufman and Dr. Tony Gavalas.

Josie Fowler
Jonesville, SC

Mrs. Josie Belk Porter Fowler, age 92, of 507 North Main Street Jonesville, SC. went to be with the Lord after years of declining health, on December 27, 2008. She was the wife of the late William Roy Porter and the late Ernest Fowler.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Union July 11, 1916, a daughter of the late Javis Monroe Belk and Lilly Ann Smith Belk. She retired from Lockhart Mill and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church of Jonesville.

Mrs. Fowler was the last survivor of her immediate family. Survivors are three daughters: Betty P. Dabbs of the home, Hazel P. Horne of Union, and Nancy P. Clayton and husband: Bobby of Jonesville; Ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fowler was pre-deceased by a son: Joe David "Bud" Porter; six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday December 30, 2008 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Jim Ivey and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will follow at Porter Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Fowler’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The following are asked to assembly at the Chapel at 2:45 PM Tuesday to form the honorary escort: Mr. And Mrs. Warren Little, Mr. And Mrs. Nig Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Moore, Rev. Mrs. Martha Foster Queen, age 81, wife of Milford Queen of 129 Hames Avenue, Jonesville, SC died Monday, December 29, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Queen was born in Salisbury, NC, April 5, 1927, a daughter of the late J.V. "Shorty" Foster and Lenna Kerr Foster. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was previously employed with the Children’s Clinic in Spartanburg. Mrs. Queen was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to her husband of sixty-two years are a daughter, Tami Queen Fowler of Woodruff; two sons: Earl Queen and wife Ann of Jonesville and Doug Queen of Buffalo; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Jo Ann Cordell and husband Maurice of Union; a brother, William C. "Bud" Foster of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law, Keith Robinson of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Queen was predeceased by a sister, Betty Robinson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

Mr. Charles Babb, age 64 formerly of Union, SC died Monday, December 29, 2008 at The Brian Center, Hendersonville, NC.

Mr. Babb was born in Union, SC September 8, 1944, a son of the late Jessie Babb and Clara Treadway Babb.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Nellie Babb Cartee; three nieces: Tonya Amin, Debbie Davis and Sandy Davis all of Union.

Graveside services 2:00 PM Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held 1:00-1:45 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.
