James F. Gilchrist

Mr. James Frazier Gilchrist beloved husband of Della Cameron Gilchrist went home to be with the Lord, October 31, 2008. Mr. Gilchrist was 79 years of age and had been married to Della 54 ½ years; they resided 2251 Thomson Qt. Rd. Sharon, SC., York County.

Mr. Gilchrist was born in Chester County January 2, 1929 a son of the late John Frazier Gilchrist and Ira McDaniel Gilchrist. He was a graduate Sharon High School and a member of Masonic Lodge 244. Mr. Gilchrist was a member Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church (PCA) where he had served as a deacon, an elder and Cemetery committeemen. He was a retired dairy farmer who continued to nurture his land and cattle.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: James Timothy Gilchrist, Sr. And wife Debbie; and John A. Gilchrist all of Sharon; a daughter: Barbara G. White and husband Earl of Lusby Maryland; one grandson: James T. Gilchrist, Jr. and wife Carla of Union; two granddaughters: Rebecca Gilchrist and Rachel Gilchrist both of Sharon; two sisters: Mary Gillham of Durham, NC, and Betty O’Dell of Sharon and one brother: Garland Gilchrist of Ashboro, NC. He was predeceased by one brother: David Gilchrist.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, November 3, 2008 at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Arnold Johnson and Rev. Ned Worstall.

Active Pallbearers will be Donald O’Dell, Rusty Thomson, Chris Stepp, Rick Sadler, Roy Parkins and Rus Thomson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church Session and Harold W. Roth.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church family life building.

Margie Moore
Jonesville, SC

Mrs. Margie Lee Camby Moore, age 86, wife of Leonard Moore of 522 Whitlock Lake Road, Jonesville died November 1, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Moore was born in Cherokee County December 22, 1921 a daughter of the late Oscar Camby and Martha Conner Camby. She was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and a former employee of J. P. Steven.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Danny Moore and Fiancée Margaret Fraser of Spartanburg, and Charles Bennett and wife Cathy of Pacolet; a daughter: Patrica Gardner of Spartanburg; two step-daughters: Vickie Neal and Phyllis Potts both of Jonesville; three sisters: Virgina Goings of Jonesville, Elsie Harvey and Doris Lamb of Pacolet; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Moore was predeceased by a daughter: Annette Duncan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown, Rev. Robert Branch, and Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Russell Goings, Robin Goings, Barry Harvey, Ned Canby, Bill Kirby and Don Camby.

Ethel Russell
Lockhart, SC

Ethel Shirley Russell, age 85, of 2501 Lockhart Highway, Union widow of Willford C. Russell died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mrs. Russell was born in Union, SC., August 17, 1923, a daughter of the late Frazier Shirley and Ruth Middlebrooks Shirley. She was a graduate of Union High School. A member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, she was a member and former teacher of the Faye Teague Sunday School Class and a member of the Fannie Stutts Circle. She was a former textile employee and was retired from Union County School District.

Mrs. Russell was the loving mother of two sons: Phillip G. Russell and wife Sybil of Charleston and Dennis C. Russell and wife Barbara of Union; five grandchildren: Phillip G. Russell, II and wife Renee, Timothy A Russell, Patrick D. Russell and wife Emily and Stephen M. Russell and wife Stephanie; five great-grandchildren: Megan Russell, Daphnie Russell, Madyson Russell, Mason Russell and Michael Russell; one brother: Freddie Shirley and wife Leila and one sister: Dorethea Goodson. Mrs Russell was predeceased by two sisters: Marjorie Morris and Virginia Redmon.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. James Crocker. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

William P. Mabry
Union, SC

Mr. William P. Mabry died on November 2, 2008, in the home at the age of 87, where he received loving care from friends and relatives. Born in Gaffney, SC on February 14, 1921, he was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas and Mabel Childers Mabry, by his beloved wife, Dorothy Willard Mabry, and brothers Edward Durant Mabry and Clarence James Mabry, and sister Ruth Mabry Atkinson.

He graduated from Union High School, was an outstanding athlete, and in later years, was elected to the Union HS Hall of Fame for football. Mr. Mabry attended Wofford College on a football scholarship, graduating in 1948. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina and Western Carolina, earning his Masters degree. His Senior year at Wofford, he was Co-Captain of the Football team, playing fullback and quarterback. The college years were interrupted by WW II, as he served in the US Army from April 1943 until November 1945. As a Staff Sergeant in the Infantry, he fought in the Sicily and Italian campaigns, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Mabry had a long career in education spanning almost 40 years. He was a teacher, coach, and principal of many schools, also serving as Head Master at Williamsburg Academy and Superintendent of Schools in Newberry. Coaching and teaching was a blessing to him, being able to give in many ways to students and players. He was a former member of the Lions Club, past President of the Rotary Club, and a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church.

"Mr. Bill" was a joy to be around, having a great sense of humor. He was always appreciative of the care he received, a gracious gentleman. Bill Mabry was one of the "Greatest Generation".

He is survived by sisters-in-law Majorie Mabry of Triangle, VA, and Kathryn Willard of Union, SC. Surviving nieces and nephews are Lynne and husband Bruce Berry of Charlotte, NC., Larry Atkinson and wife Ann of Charlotte, NC., Tommy Mabry of Greenville, SC., Tate and husband Dr. Dean Majette of Fairfax, VA., Caroline and husband Dr. Larry Smith of Bloomington, IN., Ezell Willard and wife Ann of Wilmington, NC., and Eugene Willard and wife Sherry of Morganton, NC.

The funeral for William P. Mabry of Union, SC will be conducted on November 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Grace United Methodist Church in Union, SC. Visitation will be held at 10:30 AM at the church. The Reverend David Caughman will be officiating with internment at Forest Lawn, Holcombe Funeral Home of Union in charge.

Bruce Henderson
Buffalo, SC

Mr. Bruce Arthur Henderson, age 48, husband of Cheryl Estes Henderson of 1121 Linersville Rd., Buffalo, died suddenly, Monday, November 3, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Henderson was born in Union, October 25, 1960, son of Peggy Sanders Henderson of Jonesville and the late Louis Henderson. He was a member of the Greater Union Church and a graduate of the Greater Union Church Academy. Mr. Henderson was formerly employed with Georgia Pacific for 25 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter: Meagan Garner of Buffalo; a son: Mitch Henderson of Spartanburg; two sisters: Cindy Henderson of Union and Kathy Black and husband Ricky of Jonesville; a brother: Ken Henderson and wife Jeanne of Spartanburg; three granddaughters: Natalie Garner, Emily Henderson and Adalyn Henderson all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Greater Union Church conducted by Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mary W. Nabors
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Mary Whitener Nabors, age 91, of 121 Lakeside Dr., Union, widow of Frank Nabors, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Nabors was born in Union, September 27, 1917, a daughter of the late Joseph Andrew Whitener and Rose Finger Whitener Burgess. She was a graduate of Union High School and a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was a choir member and a Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Nabors was a volunteer with Wallace Thomson Hospital as a "Pink Lady". She was a devoted and much loved wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters: Rosemary N. Shrum and husband Robert D. and Susan Elizabeth Nabors all of Rock Hill; one brother: Paul Burgess and wife Phyl of Union; 6 grandchildren: Tanner Barnes, Cole Barnes, Garrett Gregory, Brittany Gregory, Justin Gregory and Carey Walter; two great-grandchildren: Cabe and Phoenix.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral services in the Ladies Parlor of the church.

Mrs. Shirley "D.B." Boulware Fox, age 71, wife of Kenneth Wayne Fox, Sr., of 149 Tanglewood Dr., Union, died Monday, November 3, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Fox was born in Union, October 7, 1937, a daughter of the late LouisVernon and Pearl Pauline Keisler Boulware. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Sonco Products. Mrs. Fox was a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter: Arlene Gregory of Spartanburg; two sons: Kenneth Wayne Fox, Jr. of Enoree and Randy Fox and wife Amanda of Jonesville; a sister: Barbara Smith of Wellford; a brother: James Edward Boulware of Union; five grandchildren: Stephen Brewington, Chris Brewington and Garrett Fox all of Union and Amy Fox and Eric Fox of Spartanburg; 5 great-grandchildren: Rhegan Brewington and Rhylan Brewington both of Duncan, Carrigan Brewington and Halie Brewington both of Union and Jada Fox of Spartanburg; two special nieces, Kimberly Thomason and Donna Carver and several other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fox was predeceased by a sister: Gliness Austin and a brother: Louis "Buddy" Boulware.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Church Parrott and Rev. Larry Patterson. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. John F. Moore, age 79, husband of Marjorie Mullen Moore of 1097 Peach Orchard Rd. died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Moore was born in Monarch October 29, 1929 a son of the late David Hames Moore and Zettie Mae Parris. He was retired from Buffalo United Merchants Plant and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Moore an Army veteran having served in the Korean War and he loved to fish and hunt.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Tammy Haney and husband Gerald of Buffalo; two sons: Robert T. Moore and Terry Moore and wife Judy all of the home; two sisters: Ida L. Hicks and Brenda Parris both of Union; one brother: Norman D. Moore of Buffalo; eight Grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, November 8, 2008 at S.R Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the service.

Benjamin M. Whitehead
Union, S.C.

Mr. Benjamin M. Whitehead, age 83, formerly of 256 Meansville Rd., widower of Kate Smith Whitehead Union, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Whitehead was born October 31, 1925 in the Mt. Lebanon Community of Union, a son of the late Harold Whitehead and Effie Pruitt Whitehead. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Plant and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Whitehead was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are a son: James E. Whitehead and wife Marlene Eller of Buffalo; two sisters: Ruth W. Fallaw and Minnie Lawson both of Union; two brothers: Randolph Whitehead and Ed Whitehead both of Union and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Whitehead was predecease by two brothers: Frank and W.H. Whitehead.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 7, 2008 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Aulbrey Calvert and Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Garden with Military Honors.

Harry A. Orr
Union, SC

Mr. Harry A. Orr, age 73 of 2200 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Mary Black Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Orr was born in Union, SC August 26, 1935, a son of the late Arthur and Dorothy Moore Orr. He was a graduate of Union High School and Mars Hill College where he earned a Bachelor Degree. He also graduated from Newberry College with a Master Degree in English Literature and did post graduate Studies at Auburn University. Mr. Orr was a retired Educator having taught in the Manning and Rock Hill School Systems and Winthrop University. Before retirement, Mr. Orr taught at the Union County Adult Education. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where he served as organist for several years. Mr. Orr served as Past President of the South Carolina Teachers Association and was also a faithful member of the Union County Council on Aging.

Surviving are a son, Harry A. "Jay" Orr, Jr of the home; two sisters: Jackie Orr Davis and husband Bobby of Union and Trudy Orr Jolly and husband R.H. of Brandon, FL; a brother, Joe D. Orr and wife Joanne of Marathon, FL; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Orr of Union; a special niece, "Bailey Bug" and several other nieces and nephews and a loving pet companion, a Chihuahua, " Peanut".

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Sara Frances Caldwell
Union, SC

Sara F. Caldwell, age 91, of 201 E. Academy Street, Union, SC died on the 5th day of November 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union, SC.

Miss Caldwell was born in Jonesville, SC on December 22, 1916, a daughter of William Frank Caldwell and Sallie Alverson Caldwell. She graduated from Union High School in 1933, and attended USC at Columbia and Robinson Business College in Spartanburg, SC. She retired from Alman Harkleroad Insurance Agency after forty-two years of service. Miss Caldwell was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union. Miss Caldwell was a charter member of the Union High School Booster Club, and was as an avid Carolina Gamecock supporter. She was also a charter member of the Union Gamecock Club for fifty-two years.

Surviving members are two nephews, James R. Rountree, Jr of Charlotte, NC and John F. Rountree of Inman, SC and one niece, Judith A. Rountree of Union. Also surviving is a brother- in-law, James R. Rountree, Sr., also of Union.

The service for Miss Caldwell will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander. Burial will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation of family members will be held at the gravesite after interment.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 672, Union, SC 29379.

John Henry Foster, Sr.

Mr. John Henry Foster, Sr, age 83, husband of Rebecca Ann Kerr Foster of 404 Hillcrest Drive, New Ellenton, SC died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Mattie C. Hall Nursing Home in Aiken, SC.

Mr. Foster was born in Buffalo, SC July 11, 1925, a son of the late Jessie Lee Foster and Lucille Austin Foster. He retired from the Savannah River Nuclear Plant.

Mr. Foster is survived in addition to his wife by a daughter, Iris Marie Frady of Shelby, NC; a son, John H. Foster, Jr and his wife Sharon of Aiken, SC; a sister, Elizabeth Black of Union; five grandchildren: Christy Foster of Aiken, Wendy Lee Foster of the United States Navy, Sandy Marie Little of Aiken, April Rosanna Parker of Bessemer City, NC and Jonathan Mitchell Frady of Shelby, NC and three great-grandchildren: Kyler Lee Foster of Jackson, SC, John Jacob Little and Linsay Ann Little both of Aiken. Mr. Foster was predeceased by a brother, Robert Lee Foster.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 8, 2008 at New Hope United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 PM Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mary Juanita Wilburn
Simpsonville, S.C.

Miss Mary Juanita Wilburn, age 89, formerly of Rock Hill and Union, died Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the home of her sister in Simpsonville.

Miss Wilburn was born in Union, February 13, 1919, a daughter of the late Charner Terry Scaife Wilburn and Mary Haseltine Meador Wilburn. She was a graduate of Union High School, Winthrop College, and received her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. Miss Wilburn retired after 47 years teaching school in the Rock Hill and Union School Districts. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rock Hill where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and was involved in the Prison Fellowship through the church. She was an avid supporter of the International Student Union at Winthrop College, Wycliffe Bible Translators and World Vision.

Surviving are one sister: Mattie Belle Wilburn Kinard of Simpsonville and 11 nieces and nephews and 24 great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church in Union, conducted by Rev. Henry Payne and Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Miss Wilburn’s nephews and great-nephews.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church.

Sarah Christine Vinson

Mrs. Sarah Christine Smith Vinson, age 67, wife of William Eugene "Bill" Vinson, Sr. of 118 Baber St., Union, reached out and took Jesus’s hand, Saturday, November 8, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Union, November 18, 1940, a daughter of the late Wilson Arthur Smith and Gladys Goddard Smith. She was retired from Wellington Leisure of Jonesville and a member of Morningside Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies # 2 Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter: Darlene Gregory and husband Gerald Gregory, Sr. of Union; three sons: Wayne Smith, William Eugene "Gene" Vinson, Jr. and his wife Melissa all of Union and Timothy Vinson and his wife Elizabeth of Jonesville; 9 grandchildren: Hope Cribbs, Brandi Vinson, William Eugene "Gene" Vinson, III, Adam Vinson, Ashley Vinson, Amber Smith, Donna Izzett, Gerald Gregory, Jr, and Megan Gregory; and 11 great-grandchildren and two special cousins, Reese and Sandy Boulware of Phoenix City, AL. Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by a granddaughter: Gena Nicole Vinson.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM, Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Louise Stewart Winslow, age 82, wife of Donald Winslow of 108 Hidden Hill Road, Union, SC died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Winslow was born in Brooklyn, NY November 20, 1925, a daughter of the late Archibald Stewart and Louise Curry Stewart. She was a graduate of Business College and retired from Torrington Co. as an administrative secretary. Mrs. Winslow was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served on the Pastor-Parrish Committee and several other committees.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Pat Nichols and husband Joe of Union; six sons: Don Winslow and wife Debbie of Cayce, Rich Winslow and wife Mabel of Greensboro, NC, David Winslow and wife C.C. of Winston Salem, NC, Bob Winslow and wife Mary of Cary, NC, Stewart Winslow and Crystal Stoudemire of Spartanburg and Bill Winslow and wife Kim of Columbia; a sister, Joan and Dr. Harry Roselle of Tenafly, NJ; fifteen grandchildren: Allison Medley, Zack Winslow, Carrie Overfield, Laura Winslow, Catie Winslow, Matt Winslow, Garret Winslow, Jon Winslow, Jenny Nichols, Whitney Winslow, Bailey Winslow, April Winslow, Joey Nichols, E.B. Winslow and Alex Winslow and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Caughman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Winslow’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. Members of David Clyburn Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Kelly was born in Newberry County, SC July 15, 1943, a son of the late Rutledge Kelly and Earleen Wicker Kelly. He was a graduate of Whitmre High School and a former courier for a law firm. Mr. Kelly was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Kenneth Kelly of Florida; a special niece and caregiver, Rosanna Siebert of the home and another niece; two nephews; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; three great-great nieces; special friends: Bernard Woods, Christopher and Shea Lavender, Thomas Davis, Brenda Webb and Wayne Martin and a special pet, Mica Kelly Woods.

Mrs. Harrison was born in Union, SC June 10, 1923, a daughter of the late Gist Smith and Jane Smith Smith. She retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and attended Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Warren Harrison and wife Carla of Gaffney; two grandchildren: April Moore and husband Jerry and Josh Harrison all of Gaffney; two great-grandchildren, Jerry Moore, III and Jakob Moore.

Mr. William Tillman "Billy" Dixon, Jr, age 48 of 1874 Tinker Creek Rd., Union, SC died Monday, November 11, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Dixon was born in Union, SC October 7, 1960, a son of Mary Parr Dixon of the home and the late William Tillman Dixon, Sr. He was a 1978 graduate of Union Academy; attended Francis Marion University and Florence Darlington Technical College. Mr. Dixon was a self employed woodworking craftsman and was previously employed with Marion Memorial Hospital. He was an avid car enthusiast , gardener and collector of antiques.

Mr. Dixon had a special interest in the research and cure of the disease of Neuropathy.

Surviving in addition to his mother with whom he shared a home are a sister, Amy Dixon and husband Randy Green of Union; a special niece, Jill Babb and companion Richard James Crocker of Union; two great-nieces, Haleigh Miranda and Mary Elizabeth Babb and a special aunt, Virginia Whitlock of Columbia.

Mr. Fletcher was born in Union, SC November 10, 1934, a son of the late Robert Eugene Boulware and Bessie Lawson Boulware. He retired from United Merchants-Union Mill and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Fletcher was a member of Rutledge Masonic Lodge #75 and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Tommy Boulware and wife Amy; two grandsons: Dustin Brook Boulware and Joshua Kaylan Boulware; a sister, Evelyn Tucker all of Union and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Boulware was predeceased by two brothers, Lewis and Luther Boulware and a great-grandson, Justin Nathaniel Boulware.

Mrs. Harvey was born in Spartanburg County, SC August 3, 1940, a daughter of the late Charlie Philbeck and Colleen Foster Philbeck Jackson and was a homemaker.

Mr. Julius Archie Cato, age 96, widower of Lillian Brunson Cato passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008 at National Health Care in Sumter, SC.

Mr. Cato was born in Sumter, February 10, 1912, and was the oldest member and deacon of Second Baptist Church in Manning, SC. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Cato is survived by a son, Rev. Bob Cato and wife Erma of Laurens; a daughter, Jean Corbett and husband Woody of Manning; grandchildren: Robert Cato and wife Jennifer, Amy Austin and husband Kendall all of Union, Perry, Gary and Jason Corbett and their wives of Clarendon County and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Varnadoe was born in Orangeburg, SC, May 22, 1957 a son of the late Rev. Lionel Varnadoe and Eva Roebuck Varnadoe. He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Piedmont Concrete. Mr. Varnadoe was a member of Monarch Assembly of God Church; a former Monarch Fireman; Rescue Squad Member; EMS Member; Reserve Office with City of Union Police; Youth Coach for eighteen years and an avid guitar and bass player.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Amanda Shirley Davis and husband Jason and Melissa Marie Murphy and husband Stefan all of Union; a son, Marcus David Varnadoe, Jr. of the home; three sisters: Ardith Thomas of Fl, Kathryn and Rev. Mrs. Shirley Button McInzale, age 69, wife of George Thomas McInzale of 231 Country Road, Union, SC died Friday, November 14, 2008 at her home after a sudden illness.

Mrs. McInzale was born in Wayland, MI, April 22, 1939, a daughter of the late Robert Button and Beatrice Myers Button. Mrs. McInzale was a graduate of Wayland High School and had formerly worked for WBCU Radio, Jones Eastern Radio Station and Paradise Home Center.

Mrs. McInzale was a member of Padgetts Creek Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Director, a member of the WMU and the Building & Finance Committee. She also was a volunteer for the Baptist Association and the Habitat for Humanity.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Debby Duncan and husband Joey of Union and Cynthia Price of Spartanburg; a sister, Linda Robinson of Ocala, Fl; two brothers: Robert Button of Ashland, KY and William Button of Plantation, FL; four grandchildren: Shelley Price of Columbus, OH, Jamica Duncan and Russell Price, Jr both of Spartanburg and Drew Duncan of Union.

Ann H. Murchison

Born November 25, 1923, Dorothy Ann Holloway Murchison passed gracefully to heaven on November 15, 2008, in Union, SC. She was welcomed there by her parents, George Rast Holloway and Della Morgan Holloway, and her son, George Holloway Murchison. She is survived by her husband Clyde Anthony Murchison, Jr., and her children, Clyde Anthony Murchison, III, Margaret Murchison Fitz and Thomas Edmunds Fitz, Jr. Among the lives she has touched the most are her surviving grandchildren, Morgan Fitz McDonald and Brent Alan McDonald, Leslie Claire Murchison, Anne Roddey Fitz Templeton and William Shane Templeton, Lauren Holloway Murchison, Sarah Margaret "Meg" Fitz, and her great-grandson Thomas Whitaker McDonald.

Mrs. Murchison excelled academically and was an honor graduate of Greenwood High School in 1941. She graduated cum laude with an A.B. Degree from Coker College in 1945, and she earned a Masters of Social Work from Tulane University in 1947.

She worked as a counselor at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, SC, and later became Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. She was awarded with the Children’s Home Service Award. She served as a case worker for The Children’s Center in Greenville, SC, and continued her advocacy work with the SC Department of Social Services. Her leadership led to restructuring of the current child adoption laws.

Mrs. Murchison was appointed by the Governor of South Carolina to the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Board of Trustees and was honored with their service award. She was later instrumental in founding the Union County Mental Health Association. She was on the Board of Visitors at Coker College and was selected Coker College Alumna of the Year in 2004. Mrs. Murchison was a 20 year survivor of breast cancer, and she devoted much of her time to the encouragement of others suffering with the disease. She also supported the Union County chapter of Girl Scouts of America, Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, the DAR, and the Union Cotillion.

Her life was lived to the glory of her Father in heaven. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Union, SC, she discipled many as the WMU president, Sunday School teacher, and Bible study leader. She was a founding member of Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Mr. and Mrs. Murchison also coordinated several domestic and foreign Lay Renewal activities of the SC Baptist Convention.

Her heart loved us, her hands served us, her mind shaped us, and her memory inspires us. A service in celebration of her life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Union, SC, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18. The family will receive friends following the service. Mrs. Ruth Gregory Cohen, age 89 of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, widow of Earl Cohen died Monday, November 17, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Cohen was born in Union, SC November 3, 1919, a daughter of the late Starks Gregory and Annie Lee Gregory. She retired from Community Cash Grocery Stores and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Corteville of Woodruff; a sister, Deanie Blackwood of Union; a brother, Gene A. Gregory of Santuc; a granddaughter, Renita Seelye and three great grandchildren: Garth, Autumn Seelye and Michael Horvath all of Woodruff. Mrs. Cohen was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, SC, January 6, 1953, a son of the late John E. Smith and Sara Gault Smith. He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed in Professional Security for Sam Boyd of Boyd Gaming in Las Vegas, NE. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist Faith and was an avid racing fan.

Mr. Adams was born in Union, SC, August 31, 1924, a son of the late Clyde Columbus Adams and Ruby Smith Adams. He was a retired truck driver for Concrete Supply of Charlotte and was a member of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. Mr. Adams was a member of the American Legion Post #180 in Charlotte and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.

Surviving are a son, Francis M. Mrs. Mason was born in Pacolet Mills, SC, April 28, 1921, a daughter of the late Thad Wells and Bertha Sutton Wells. She retired from Torrington Company; was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church and was a former member of Clarion Chapter "Sweet Adelines" singing group. Mrs. Mason was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Charles "Sonny" Mason, Jr and wife Sandy of Jonesville; two grandsons: Jeff Mason and wife Tracy of Jonesville and Jon Mason and wife Nicole of Roebuck; a great-granddaughter, Avery Browning Mason of Roebuck and two special little girls, Kensley and Hannah Hill. Mrs. Inez Knox Howell formerly of the Ottaray Community, Union, widow of James William "Jay" Howell went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Howell was born in Union, SC August 17, 1922, a daughter of the late Alonzo and Emma Bentley Knox. She was a retired textile employee, having worked at both the Monarch and Union Mill Plants of Milliken and Company. Mrs. Howell was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church where she was a former member of Hazel Wright Sunday School Class and a former choir member. Mrs. Howell was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was first married to the late Boyce Morris.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Prather Catoe and husband Jerry of Inman; two sons: Wayne Morris and Larry Morris both of Union; four grandchildren: Beverly Morris and Melanie Walker both of Union, Zane Morris of Lexington and Jason Prather of Durham, NC; six great-grandchildren: Matraca Morris of California, Savannah Morris and Chloe Morris both of Lexington, SC, Shon Morris, Chelsea and Joshua Walker all of Union; two step-grandsons: Charles A. Fox of Spartanburg and Troy Price of Union and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Howell was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Carol Ann Wilson Bryson, age 50 of 1005 Delta Road, Whitmire, SC, widow of Mark Bryson died Monday, November 24, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Bryson was born in Union, SC, April 5, 1958, a daughter of the late Sam Wilson, Sr and Carolyn Alverson Wilson. She was a graduate of Union High School and graduated from beautician school. Mrs. Bryson was a former employee of ARA Services at Carlisle Finishing Plant of Cone Mills and was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Sam Wilson, Jr and wife Patricia of Union; an uncle, Tommy Alverson of Whitmire; a niece, Mandy Wilson and nephew, Sammy Wilson both of Union; a very special companion, Kenneth Blizzard with whom she made her home in Whimire; a great niece, Amber Wilson of Jonesville; special friend, Donna Mitchel of Carlisle and her loving cat, "J.R.".

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Kenneth Weaver.

Visitation will be held 2:00-3:00 PM Wednesday in the chapel prior to the service.

The family will be at the home, 1005 Delta Road, Whitmire, SC 29378 and at the home of her brother, Sam and Patricia Wilson, 123 Sam Wilson Road, Union, SC 29379.

Evelyn Sparks Wilburn
Formerly of Union

Mrs. Evelyn Sparks Wilburn, age 82, formerly of Union, widow of Hiram Arthur Wilburn died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at White Oak Manor, Newberry, SC.

Mrs. Wilburn was born in Union, SC November 3, 1926, a daughter of the late Fred Sparks and Cora Epps Sparks. She was the former owner-operator of Wilburn Sporting Goods and was of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Wilburn was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Tammy Wilburn Warr and husband Jimmy of Union; two grandsons: Colby Bright and J.R. Warr and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wilburn was predeceased by two sisters.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

The family is at the home of his daughter, Tammy and Jimmy Warr, 2068 Jonesville Hwy., Union, SC 29379.
