Mrs. Nellie Smart Henson, age 78, widow of Joseph Freeman Henson, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Henson was born in Forest City, NC, March 12, 1930, a daughter of the late Martin and Fannie Tessnear Smart. She was a homemaker and attended the Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving are one daughter: Stephanie Caldwell and husband Charles of Union; one son: Stanley Henson and wife Patricia of Forest City, NC; two sisters: Katherine Wright of Union and Poniese Shealy of Rock Hill; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, October 2 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.

Ruth Howard Greer
Lockhart, S.C.

Mrs. Ruth Howard Greer, age 85, widow of Donald E. Greer, of 313 Mill St., Lockhart, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Greer was born in Lockhart, February 18, 1923 a daughter of the late Claude and Mabel Roberts Howard. She was retired from the Lockhart Post Office and was a life-long member of Lockhart United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Donna Williams and husband John, and Martha McKinnon all of Union and Susan Greer of Lockhart; one son: Brent Greer and wife Rhonda of Buffalo; one brother: Fred "Buddy" Howard of Union; 10 grandchildren and their wives and husbands; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Greer was predeceased by a son, Larry Greer, two sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Ben Hill, Rev. Mark Truitt and Mr. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Allen, Paul Black, Larry Jenkins, Tommy McCollum, Fred Howard, Jr. and Bill Harris.

Mrs. Greer’s caregivers, Margaret Braddock, Grace Barber, Janice Allen, Louise Baldwin, Patsy Cromer and Pat Gibson are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:30 until 8:30 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Frances M. Patterson
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Frances Miller Patterson, age 66, widow of Otis Lee Patterson of 332 Sardis Rd., died Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at her home after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Patterson was born in Whitmire, March 24, 1942, a daughter of the late Roosevelt and Gertrude Elizabeth Robertson Miller. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a volunteer with Safe Home Crisis Coalition in Spartanburg and the Boogaloo Productions in Union.

Surviving are two daughters: Veronica Morgan and husband Percy, and Carol Jones all of Chesnee; four sons: Richard Burton and wife Arlene of Union, Christopher Patterson and wife Lynn of Yamasee, Bryan Patterson and wife Cyndi of Pomaria, and Kenny Patterson of MA; one step-daughter: Angela Cooper of Union; one brother: Douglass Miller of Easley; special friends, Coy O’Shields of Maysville, GA and Barbara Austin of Union; 14 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Patterson was predeceased by a sister: Myra Jones and a brother: Connie Miller.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Sumner Memorial Baptist Church.

William Isaac Jones
Jonesville, SC

Mr. William Isaac Jones, age 73, formerly of Jonesville, SC, widower of Betty Stewart Jones died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born in Union, SC, July 31, 1935, a son of the late William Tom Jones and Cleo Patricia Tessner Jones. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from Community Cash Grocery Stores as produce manager. Mr. Jones was of the Presbyterian Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Paula Renee Knox and husband Johnny of Jonesville; a son, Frankie Jones and wife Jerrie of Boiling Springs, SC; a brother, Grady Jones and wife Doris of Jonesville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 5, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in the Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Buchann, Daniel Steward, James Tessner and Sammy Jones, Jr.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday night at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Lois H. Inman

Mrs. Lois Henderson Inman, age 86, widow of Billy H. Inman, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Inman was born in Union, February 11, 1922, a daughter of Leo B. Henderson, Sr. and Viola Adams Henderson. She was retired from Conso Products and a charter member of New Life Baptist Church where she was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class.

Surviving are three brothers: Leo B. Henderson, Jr. and wife Norma and Vernon J. "Chunk" Henderson all of Union, and Bobby "Doc" Henderson and wife Juline of Jonesville; a sister-in-law: Peggy S. Henderson of Jonesville; a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Henderson was predeceased by three brothers: Floyd Henderson, Paul C. Henderson, and Lewis "Cucumber" Henderson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 4, 2008 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shep Bevis and Rev. Stephen Berry. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be nephews: Mike Henderson, Tim Henderson, Ken Henderson, Jeffrey Henderson, Ricky Black and Mitch Henderson.

Staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and members of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Willie McNeace Poole age 78, widow of Charles Earl Poole, Sr., of 508 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Poole was born in Union, April 6, 1930 a daughter of the late W.C. McNeace and Bernice Greer McNeace. She was retired from Conso Products and was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter: Kathy P. Blackwell and husband C.B.; a son: Chuck Poole and wife Christel; a brother: Albert McNeace; three grandchildren: Karen B. Petty and husband Tommy, Lauren Poole and Garrett Poole all of Union; two great-grandchildren: Katelyn and Kalli Petty. Mrs. Poole was predeceased by two brothers: Thomas S. McNeace and L.G. McNeace.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Chaplain Orlando McCarley.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Larry Charles Black, Jr., age 36 of 183 Mudbridge Rd., Buffalo, SC died Thursday, October 2, 2008.

Mr. Black was born in Union, SC, March 16, 1972, a son of Sylvia Jones Whitlock of Whitmire and Larry Charles Black, Sr of Union and was a self-employed plumber.

Surviving in addition to his parents are three daughters, Kayla Marie Black, Hayden Sierre Black and Aleya Jade Black all of Gaffney; a brother, Kenneth Black and wife Tina of Union; a sister, Linda Navarro of Las Vegas, NV; maternal grandmother, Bessie Whitlock and step-maternal grandfather Gordon Whitlock of Whimire; a step mother, Brenda Monroe of Union; a step-father Gerald Whitlock of Whitmire and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, October 6, 2008 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook and Rev. Ray Harold Belue. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens

Mr. Stanley Lyles Hulon, age 56, of 3217 Celeanese Rd. Rock Hill, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Hulon was born June 23, 1952 in Union a son of the late Harold E. Hulon, Sr. and Kathrine Callahan Hulon. He was of the Baptist faith, a graduate of Union High School and Winthrop University.

Surviving are a brother: Eddie Hulon of Union; two aunts: Lou H. Smith and Ann Hulon of Union; a niece: Jessica Allison of Union and a special friend: Carolyn Ballard of Rock Hill.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M Monday, October 13, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Grady Brannon, Jr.
Lockhart, S.C.

Mr. Grady "Junebug" Brannon, Jr., age 62, of 210 South 6th St., Lockhart, died Monday, October 6, 2008, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Brannon was born in Union, December 31, 1945, a son of the late Grady Brannon, Sr. and Nellie Rochester Brannon. He was retired from S.C. Hondros and Associates of Charlotte, NC and was a member of the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Surviving are five sisters: Nancy Hope of Union, Brenda Petty of LA, Tincy Inman, Guynita Brannon and Carolyn Rash all of Lockhart; one brother: Clifton Brannon of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Brannon was predeceased by three sisters, Sarah Gregory, Peggy Walker and Mary Cox; and three brothers: Barney "Sony" Brannon, Walter Lee Brannon and Arthur Brannon.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 9, 2008, Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Brian Bishop and Rev. Paul Childers. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Deal, Tommy Deal, Alvin Garner, Robert Petty, Lee Brannon and Dale Inman.

The body will be taken to the home, 210 W. South 6th Street, Lockhart, Wednesday where the family will receive friends after 2:00 PM and will be placed in the church 2:00 PM Thursday to await the time of service.

Doris Pearson Moore
Union, SC

Mrs. Doris Pearson Moore, age 75, of 213 Spruce Street, Union, SC, widow of Hamilton Gray Moore died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Moore was born in Greer, SC., September 17, 1933, a daughter of the late Augustus Pearson and Lillie Powell Pearson. She was a graduate of Parker High School and retired from Wallace Thompson Hospital, where she worked in the business office. Mrs. Moore was a member of Unity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two brothers: Raymond Pearson of Greer and Clyde A. Pearson of Greenville, a nephew, David Pearson of Greenville and many special friends including Sharon Rupp and Beth Weltman both of Union and her lifelong friend, Bobby Nalley and her family of the Greenville area.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Salvation Army Citadel Chapel conducted by Cpt. Jason Smith and Rev. C. Allen Senn. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, at 3:00 PM Saturday afternoon.

Rev. Joseph Stover
Union, SC

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant:... enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

Rev. Joseph H. Stover, age 79, husband of Annie Robinson Stover of 1503 Pineland Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at his home.

Rev. Stover was born in Kershaw County, September 11, 1929, a son of the late Hoyt and Bessie Williams Stover. He graduated from Baron-Dekalb High School, Furman University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. A Veteran of the Korean War, he served as a medic with the U.S. Army. Rev. Stover retired from Gilead Baptist Church as pastor after twenty plus years and also pastored six other churches in South Carolina and one in Texas. He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: Joel Anthony Stover and wife Julie of Jonesville; a daughter: Deborah Joanne Garrett and husband Craig of Jonesville; a brother: Brown Stover and wife Rena of Kershaw; a brother-in-law: James Parker of Camden; two granddaughters: Lori Ann Garrett and Emma Joyce Stover and a number of nieces and nephews. Rev. Stover was pre-deceased by a sister Evelyn Parker.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, October 11, 2008 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Joe White and Rev. Mark Truitt. Burial will follow in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM Saturday in the church prior to the service.

Sarah Lee Allison
Union, SC

Mrs. Sarah Lee Allison, age 95, formerly of Arthur Blvd., Union, SC, widow of Paul H. Allison, Sr, former Police Chief of the City of Union, died Thursday, October 9, 2008 after a brief illness at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Allison was born in Union, SC May 19, 1913, a daughter of the late Lewis Boyd Lee and Sallie Ledbetter Lee. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Asheville Teacher’s College. Mrs. Allison was the former owner and operator of Eugene’s Beauty Shop for over sixty years in Monarch. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy of Union County and was active in the community as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Allison was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, Paul H. Allison, Jr and his wife Linda of Huntersville, NC; a grandson, Paul H. Allison, III and his wife Danis of Conover, NC and their children, Holt Allison and Alexa Allison; a granddaughter, Melinda Allison Broadhurst and her husband Bo of Chesterfield, MO and their children, Allison Broadhurst and Benjamin Broadhurst.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Caughman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Allison’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 2:00-3:30 PM Sunday in the church parlor prior to the service..

Mary Manley Varner

Mrs. Mary Manley Varner, age 83 of 337 Riley Road, Buffalo, SC, widow of Paul Ray Varner, Sr went home to be with the Lord and reunited with her beloved husband Paul, Friday, October 10, 2008.

Mrs. Varner was born in Greenville, SC June 28, 1925, a daughter of the late Moody Manley and Bertha Brown Manley Rogers. She retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital as a Registered Nurse and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara V. Ramsey and her husband Steve of Buffalo; four sons: Robert W. Varner, Sr and Cathy of Buffalo, Harold R. Varner and Marlene of Union, David R. Varner and his wife Sheila and Paul R. Varner, Jr and his wife Jerri all of Buffalo; a half-brother, Charles Manley of Greenville; a special nephew, Kenneth Barnett and his wife Juanita of Greenville and a special sister-in-law, Ruth V. Lawson of Buffalo; twelve grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Varner was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

William "Bill" Williamson, Jr.

Mr. William Lewis "Bill" Williamson, Jr, age 76, husband of Alice Mae Cardwell Williamson of 132 Pineland Avenue, Union, SC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Williamson was born in Forest Park, GA September 6, 1932, a son of the late William Lewis Williamson, Sr and Mary Morris Lee Williamson. He was a graduate of Carson Newman College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Mr. Williamson was the former Minister of Music at Westside Baptist Church; a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where he had served as Music Director for sixteen years and was the teacher of Mary Keith’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Williamson was a Veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Ralph Williamson and his wife Vicki of Roanoke, Va, David Williamson and his wife Christy of Jacksonville, FL, Stephan Williamson and his wife Angie of Duncan, SC; a brother, Raymond C. Williamson of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Elizabeth Lee Harper of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren: Amy & Franklin Frye, Kary and Matt Anderson all of Lexington, KY, Allison Williamson and David Williamson, Jr both of Jacksonville, FL, Tyler and Ashley Williamson of Boiling Springs, SC, Melanee "Pete" and Josh Williams of Duncan, SC, Kevin & Jennifer Conrad of Piedmont, SC and Russell Dalton of Liberty, SC and two great-grandchildren: Connor and Sarah Williamson of Boiling Springs, SC. Mr. Williamson was predeceased by a brother, George T. Williamson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williamson’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Mr. Paul Everette Elliott, age 81, husband of Lula Rena Maness Elliott of 373 Riley Road, Buffalo, SC died Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, Spartanburg, SC.

Mr. Elliott was born in Union County, SC February 5, 1927, a son of the late Columbus "C.S." Elliott and Bertha Vess Elliott. He retired from Conso Products and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mr. Elliott was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Stanley Elliott and his wife Pam of Union; a sister, Zeelon McSwain of Georgia; two brothers: Sam Elliott and his wife Jeannine of Buffalo and Mack Elliott and his wife June Carol of Union; three grandchildren: Kevin and his wife Kayte of Wake Forest, NC, Melanie and Lauren of Union; two great-great grandchildren: Blake and Jaydon both of Union; a number of nieces and nephews and a special family friend, Jimmy Johnson. Mr. Elliott was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers: Mildred Snyder, Mabel Kingsmore, Carl Elliott and Rudy Elliott.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Tim Anderson, Rev. Shep Bevis, Rev. Johnny Burgess and Rev. Stephen Berry. Mr. Elliott’s special caregivers were Dr. Robert Yannetti, Dr. Clyde Woolen and Dr. Patricia Giffin.

Mrs. Margaret Powell, age 80, wife of Edward C. Powell of 105 Byron Terrace, Spartanburg, SC. went to be with the Lord October 16, 2008 after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Powell was born in Union on May 5, 1928 a daughter of the late Fred Wallace Sparks and Cora Epps Sparks. She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and worked as a secretary for several industries and churches throughout Union and Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Marlene Kelly Carter and husband Joe of Duncan; Phyllis Kelly Burgess and husband Paul of Union; one sister: Evelyn Sparks Wilburn of Newberry; four grandchildren: Kelsey Carter and Kit Carter of Spartanburg, Paul Burgess, III and Elizabeth Burgess of Union; two great-grandchildren: Jessica Burgess and Alysa Burgess Lee of Spartanburg; and one great-great-grandchild: Kagen Taylor of Spartanburg. Mrs. Powell was predeceased by a sister: Elizabeth Sparks Shealy.

Graveside services will be held 11:30 AM Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to the service at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home in Union, SC.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Johnson Ramsey, age 75, loving wife of fifty nine years of Thurman E. "Shorty" Ramsey died Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Ramsey was born in Spartanburg County, SC May 20, 1933, a daughter of the late Charlie H. Johnson and Annie Morrow Johnson. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Tommie Vaughn Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters: Sue R. Davis and husband Butch of Union, Joan R. Christopher and husband Gary of Pulaski, TN and Melissa R. Johnson and husband Ronnie of Woodruff; two sons: Steven E. Ramsey and wife Barbara of Buffalo and Mark A. Ramsey of the home; two sisters: Margaret J. Stepp of Spartanburg and Sherry J. Simmons of Georgia; a brother, Thurman "Hap" Johnson of Wellford; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ramsey was predeceased by seven brothers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Ramsey’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. Members of the Tommie Vaughn Sunday School Class; the Jimmy Smith Friday Night Jamboree; the Buffalo Opry and Rick McKinney’s Pickers are all asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 7:00-8:30 PM Saturday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Audrey Place Smith, age 83, widow of Albert S. Smith formerly of Brittany Manor Apts., died Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Golden Living Center in Hendersonville, N.C.

Mrs. Smith was born in Inman, SC, July 11, 1925, a daughter of the late Herbert J. and Mae Bryson Place. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three sons: Jimmy Smith and wife Judy of Whitmire, Roy Dean Smith of Atlanta, GA, and Wayne Smith of Lyman, and a number of grand and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.
