Mrs. Lucille Vaughan Littlejohn, age 90, widow of Austin F. Littlejohn of 1417 Lockhart Hwy. Union, died Sunday, August 31, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Littlejohn was born in Spartanburg Co., April 2, 1918 a daughter of the late W.T. and Ada Vaughan. She retired from the S.C. Dept of Corrections, Dutchman Facility, as secretary to the warden and had previously worked as Clerk with Union Co. Mrs. Littlejohn had also worked with Milliken Co. Monarch Plant and with Grace United Methodist Church as church secretary for a number of years. She was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Jim Smith Sunday School Class. Mrs. Littlejohn was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Andy Littlejohn and wife Kay of Union; one granddaughter: Andrea L. Hitzeman and husband Kurt of Carrollton, GA; and a step-son: Gene Littlejohn of Texas. Mrs. Littlejohn was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Gregg Walker, William Earl Sprouse, Robbie Littlejohn, Jeff Littlejohn, Wayne Springs and Richard Baldwin.

James A. "Jim" Woods, Jr.
Union, S.C.

Mr. James Arthur "Jim" Woods, Jr., age 56, husband of Maxine Poole Woods of 415 Pineland Rd., Union, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends, Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Woods was born in Florence, SC, August 25, 1952, a son of James Arthur Woods, Sr. and Frances Roark Woods of Union. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Woods was a retired maintenance mechanic with ALCOA and was a Shriner. An active member of Hebron Baptist Church, Mr. Woods was a former Deacon, Sunday School Director and teacher and a member of the choir. He was a devoted Christian dedicated to the Lord, his church and his family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are two sisters: Donna Kaye Woods of Batesburg, Lyda Cannon of Union; three brothers: Randy Woods, Harry Woods and wife Kathy, and Kerry Woods all of Union; two sisters-in-law: Alicia McKinney and husband Mac of Roebuck and Belinda Douglas of Union; a brother-in-law: Roger Douglas of Union and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Woods was especially close to his mother-in-law, Shirley Douglas Taber and step-father in-law, Charles Taber. He was predeceased by a son: Brian Woods.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Larry Padgett and Rev. Brian Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James Edmonds, Ed Littlejohn, Joe Arrowood, Don Martin, Josh Woods, Ben Jolly, Vic Mitchell and James Turner.

Member of the church choir are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Olin David Smith age 74, widower of Ruby Farrow Smith, of Subertown Lane, Whitmire, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Smith was born in Union Co., July 11, 1934, a son of the late David and Carrie Johnson Smith. He was a veteran of the US Navy and retired as a commercial painter with Longshore Painting in Newberry.

Mr. Smith was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter: Vicky Willard; a granddaughter: Nicole Wadsworth and husband Michael all of Whitmire; a grandson: Daniel Powell of Anderson; a step-daughter: Loretta Willard and husband Danny of Whitmire; 2 great-grandchildren: Kayte and Kayla Wadsworth; and two step-grandchildren: Deanna Willard and Lee Willard all of Whitmire.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by a daughter: Shirley R. Smithl, a sister: Ella Mae Smith and a brother: Perry Smith.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2008 at Whitmire Cemetery conducted by Rev. Steve Young.

Mrs. Maggie Lucille Wix Matthews, age 85, widow of Lonnie Moses Matthews, of 68 Ropp St. Gray Court, SC., died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the National Health Care in Laurens, SC.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Union, SC on October 3, 1922 a daughter of the late Oscar Wix and Jessie Franklin Wix and Lillie Harris Wix. Mrs. Matthews was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Survivors are a daughter: Judith "Judy" Head and husband Buddy of Gray Court, a brother: Carl Wix and wife Minnie of Buffalo; three grandchildren: Glenda, Dakota and Beth; six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Matthews was predeceased by two sisters: Ruby Spencer and Edna Fleming, and five brothers: Boyce Wix, Manual Wix, Clarence Wix, Forest Wix and Robert Wix..

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tony Crouch and the Rev. Steve Christopher. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Marie Fowler Kurtz, age 51 of 302 Stutts Ave., Union, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at the Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

Ms. Kurtz was born in Union, July 13, 1957, a daughter of the late Wallace "Dehorn" and Jeanette Carter Fowler. She was a graduate of Union High School and Limestone College, Cum Laude with degrees in Studio Art and Art Education. She received her Masters Degree in Art Education at the University of South Carolina and continued post-graduate studies at other institutions through out the state. Ms. Kurtz was a National Board Certified teacher having taught in the Union Co. School System and also at USC-Union. During her career, she was recognized on both the local and state level for her contributions to art education. She was named a Union Co. Teacher of the Year, recognized as a STAR Teacher and received the S.C. Middle School Art Educator of the Year award. Spartanburg Community College named her "Woman of Distinction" for her work as an artist and educator. A practicing artist, she exhibited her art in both North and South Carolina. Ms. Kurtz was a member of the Artist Guild of Spartanburg, the S.C. Art Education Association, and was a former board member of the Union Co. Arts Council.

Surviving are a daughter: Melissa Fowler and a granddaughter: Mackenzie Palmer both of the home; a brother: Kenneth Fowler of Greer and several other relatives.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Jack Ray, formerly of 817 Flat Dr. Buffalo, husband of Elsie Ray, died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at White Oak Manor of Spartanburg.

Mr. Ray was born in Buffalo, a son of the late Jesse Ray and Thelma Millwood Ray Martin. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mr. Ray was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Melanie Ray of Spartanburg; a son: Stephen Ray and wife Regina of Pacolet; a brother: Billy Ray of Myrtle Beach; 4 grandchildren: Heather Bobo, Nicklaus Bevis, Wil Ray, and Jesse Ray; 3 great-grandchildren; Hayley, Chase and Madelyne.

Mrs. Liesbeth Kienast Bowie, age 74, widow of Robert Augustus Bowie formerly of Deer Run Rd. Union died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Camp Care in Inman, SC.

Mrs. Bowie was born September 17, 1933 in Peisterwitz, Silesia before moving to West Germany with her family. She was the daughter of the late Hermann and Elfriede Spate Kienast and was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are a daughter: Patricia Moss and husband David of Inman; a son: Alfred Bowie and wife Gail of Union; two sisters: Irmgard Acuna and Ann Maiden and husband Jimmie all of California; 6 grandchildren: David Moss, Jr., Jeremy Moss, Nina Bagwell, Patricia Cook, Mitchell Trammell and Kimberly Whitlock; 8 great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Bowie was predeceased by two brothers: Walter and Werner Kienast.

Mrs. West was born in Union, July 25, 1941 a daughter of the late Carey and Ella Farmer Kingsmore. She was retired from the United Merchants-Buffalo Mill and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son: Lynn West and wife Nancy L. of Buffalo; two sisters: Edna Davis and Charlotte Ochiltree both of Buffalo; two brothers: Glenn Kingsmore and Charles Kingsmore both of Greenwood; one granddaughter: Brittany L. West and friend Jamie Sumner both of Buffalo and a special friend: Larry Baldwin. Mrs. West was predeceased by four sisters: Frances Burgess, Peggy Moore, Ella Mae Dallas and Margaret Willard; two brothers: Earl Kingsmore and Bobby Kingsmore.

Mr. Ray was born in Clinton, SC April 9, 1932, a son of the late Jesse E. Ray and Thelma Millwood Martin. Mr. Ray was the director of tours at Bennett’s Calabash Seafood at Myrtle Beach, SC and the founder and former owner operator of Andy’s of Buffalo. Mrs. Ruth Snyder Thornton, age 90, widow of J.T. Thornton, formerly of Buffalo, died Thursday, September 18, 2008 at her home in Chapin, SC.

Mrs. Thornton was born in Spartanburg Co., April 2, 1918 a daughter of the late Elsie and Pearl Smith Snyder. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter: Elaine Bittinger and husband Don of Chapin, with whom Mrs. Thornton made her home; two granddaughters: Lisa Kincaid and husband Don of Ashburn, VA and Lori Lloyd and husband Rocky of Rockwall, TX; three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thornton was predeceased by a brother: Bill Snyder.

Mr. Fowler was born in Union, November 14, 1939 a son of the late Mark and Irene Mitchell Fowler. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from ABCO Industries in Roebuck. A veteran of the US Navy, he finished his career as a 2nd Class Machinist Mate. Mr. Fowler was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Tommie F. Fowler, Jr. and wife Trish, William Floyd Fowler and fiancee Stacey Tucker, and Richard Scott Fowler and wife Keena all of Union; a step-daughter: Michelle Robinson and fiancee George Geter of Spartanburg; a step-son: Jeff Parker and fiancee Stacey Suttle of Gaffney; one sister: Paulette Sealy and husband Edward of Union; numerous special nieces and nephews. Mr. Fowler was predeceased by two sisters: Kathaleen Osment and Janie Tucker and two brothers: William Fowler and J.G. Fowler.

Mrs. Smith was born in Canton, N.C., December 27, 1926 a daughter of the late Henry and Ethel Puckett Bumgarner. She was retired from J.P. Stevens in Jonesville and was a member of Sulpher Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mr. Duncan was born in Pelham, SC, January 12, 1929, a son of the late T.J. Duncan and Willie Mae Harris Duncan. He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Community College. He was retired from the US Air Force having 20 plus years of service and the SC Department of Corrections. Mr. Duncan was a member of Putnam Baptist Church.

Kenneth George McKenzie
Union, S.C.

Mr. Kenneth George McKenzie, age 86, husband of Jane McKenzie died Sunday September 28, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. McKenzie was born in Holyoke, MA, a son of the late George and Victoria McKenzie. He lived in Ware, MA until he was nine years old and his family moved to Norwich, CT. A graduate of Norwich Free Academy in 1941, Mr. McKenzie was captain of the rifle team and a member of the football team. He was attending Brown University when he joined the US Navy and graduated Midshipman School from Notre Dame University. He served aboard LST 1063 in the Pacific Theater until the end of World War II and attained the rank of Lieutenant.

In 1948, Mr. McKenzie graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Textile Chemistry. He was employed as a chemist for U.S. Finishing Co. in Norwich, CT and as a Chief Chemist in Hartsville, SC and with Cone Mills, Carlisle Finishing Plant until his retirement. Mr. McKenzie was a charter member of the Norwich Junior Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Union Country Club, the Elks Club and the Lions Club. He was of the protestant faith but attended the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Union with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-five years, are two sons: Keith McKenzie and wife Margaret of York, and Matthew McKenzie and wife Sara of Pacolet; a sister: Marilyn Hackenberg and husband Robert of East Lyme, CT; a special cousin: Helen MacKenzie of Norwich, CT; a granddaughter: Maranda McKenzie; two step-granddaughters: Madeline and Hannah Norton; a step-grandson: Justin Hyatt; and his beloved pet dog, Dash. Mr. McKenzie was predeceased by a son, Kenneth George McKenzie, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church conducted by Rev. Mr. Harry Pecko, Deacon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Don Martin, Johnny Turner, Don Hyder, Douglas Lawing, Thomas Coffey and Hamp Jeter.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 11:15 AM Wednesday to form the honorary escort: Don Winslow, Horace Corbett, Marian Byrd, Keath Bailey, John Brown, Hugh Dillard, Jack Rash, Jim Cunningham, Leo Hines, and Harold Simmons.

The family will receive friends Tuesday 7:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home and a reception will be held Wednesday following the interment at the cemetery.
