Billy S. Genoble
Union, S.C.

Mr. Billy Sparks Genoble, widower of Gladys Holcombe Genoble of 303 Birchwood Dr., Union, passed away Monday morning at the Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg after a brief illness.

Mr. Genoble was born in Pacolet, a son of the late Clyde and Bessie Genoble. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and Wofford College. Mr. Genoble retired from J.P. Stevens and the S.C. Dept. of Corrections. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a former member of the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Genoble was an active member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he was a member of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class. He was a Past Master of Rutledge Masonic Lodge # 351, a member of the American Legion Post #22 and served on the Salvation Army Board.

Surviving are two sons: Richard "Butch" Genoble and wife Janet Cash Genoble of Spartanburg; and Thomas Hayden Genoble and wife Mary Pacolette Little Genoble of Jonesville; six grandchildren: Richard Allen Genoble, Jr. and wife Caroline Brown Genoble, Blakely Cash Genoble, Elizabeth Pacolette "Liza" Genoble, Hayden Allan Genoble, Margaret Grace "Maggie" Genoble and Ella Paige Genoble. Mr. Genoble was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Genoble.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Mr. Tom Alexander. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Alexander, Donald Bobo, James Sumner, Earl Bryan, Bill Goodwin, William Earl Sprouse, Al Smith, Skee Nichols and Richard Brown.

Member of the Hardee’s Friends, members of the Senior Group and the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class of Mon Aetna Baptist Church are all asked to sit in a goup.

Visitation will be held 12:45 until 1:45 PM at the church prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mon Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, S.C., 29379.

Malcolm Eugene Riddle
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Malcolm Eugene Riddle, age 74, husband of Shirley Lawson Riddle of 4141 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, SC died Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

Mr. Riddle was born in Spartanburg County, SC July 20, 1935, a son of the late Louie Riddle and Louise Vinson Riddle. He retired from Milliken & Co. - Monarch Plant and was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Breakfast Club and Prayer Group. He volunteered for five years at Croft State Park.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Kenneth Riddle and wife Alice and Kevin Riddle all of West Springs; four grandchildren: Kim Riddle-Bailey and husband Brian, Kyle Riddle and wife Becky, Nicholas Riddle and Kolby Riddle; a great-granddaughter, Kylie M. Gregory and a great-grandson due December 2009; three sisters: Mary Durham, Virginia West and Shirley Robinson all of Spartanburg County and three brothers: J.E. Riddle, Jesse Riddle and Arden Riddle all of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson.

Active pallbearers will be Brian Bailey, Billy Lawson, Ronnie Lawson, Jeff Lawson, Ray Vinson and Steve Lawson.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM Wednesday to form the Honorary Escort: Ken Reynolds, Harold Becknell, Harold Babb, Richard and Nancy Smith, Charlie Vinson and John and Joyce Crocker. Rhonda P. Littlejohn
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Rhonda Michelle Pettit Littlejohn age 41, wife of Wendell Littlejohn of 117 Harlan St., Union, died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Littlejohn was born in Union, August 12, 1968 a daughter of David Pettit Jr. and Avanelle Eaves Pettit. She was a graduate of Union Academy and Spartanburg Technical College. Mrs. Pettit was employed with Union Co. Disabilities and Special Needs. She worked at the Park Dr. home in Jonesville where she was a special mother to four boys, Larry, Jimmy, Michael and Vernon. Mrs. Pettit was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband a parents are a sister: Crystal Rawdon and husband Bobby of York; three brothers: Andy Pettit and wife Tami of Pacolet, Tim Pettit and wife Angie of Spartanburg and Tony Pettit and wife Darlene of Union; her paternal grandmother: Mary Pettit of Union; her mother and father-in-law: Pat and Don Littlejohn of Union; two sisters-in-law: Donna Sweezy of Union and Beverly Smith of Jonesville; nieces and nephews: Amber Pittman, Jacob Pettit, Morgan and Maren Pettit, Marissa and Justin Pettit, Eli Rawdon, Jason Sweezy and Taylor Smith; two great-nephews: Cade and Jake Sweezy.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis and Rev. Tony Pettit. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Gena Smith
Union, SC

Mrs. Gena Turner Smith, age 97 of Union, widow of Ross Smith died Friday, August 28, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Cross Anchor, SC June 8, 1912, a daughter of the late John Thomas Turner and Mary Susan Prather Turner. She was graduate of Cross Anchor High School and retired from Excel Hosiery. Mrs. Smith was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons: John J. Smith and wife Peggy and Monty Smith all of Union; two daughters: Betty Nave of Union and Ann Hyatt and husband Wayne of West Springs; a special niece, Evelyn Ruth Tucker of Union and a number of other nieces and nephews; a son-in-law, Olin Robinson of Union; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a daughter, Ramona "MoMo" Robinson, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, August 31, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Rev. Richard Lewis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Dean Robinson, Neil Robinson, Ben Hyatt, Roger Hyatt, Dave Ward, Jr and Dennis Nix. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers: Dr. Chris McWhorter, Dr. Paul Switzer, Diane Hendricks, Pearl Crocker, Jean Crocker, Unit One’s Nurses and CNA’s of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and members of Unity United Methodist Church.

Gordon Harold Holcombe

Mr. Gordon Harold Holcombe, age 88, husband of Dorothy Trammell Holcombe of 1719 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Jonesville, SC went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Holcombe was born in Cherokee County, SC November 10, 1920, a son of the late Marvin Boyd Holcombe and Mamie Birdie Mauk Holcombe. He was a 1939 graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School and retired from Milliken & Company - Lockhart Mill after forty-five years of service. Mr. Holcombe was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church where he was a former Elder.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters: Nadean Vinson and Vivian Farr both of Spartanburg; a brother, W. Hope Holcombe and wife Carrie of Jonesville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 29, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Steve Lemons and Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Rufus "Bud" Brewington

Mr. Rufus S. "Bud" Brewington, age 78 of 604 Toney Rd., Union, SC, widower of Mary Jo Hill Brewington died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at McCall Hospice Home in Simpsonville, SC.

Mr. Brewington was born in Union, SC July 25, 1931, a son of the late James Bilby Brewington and Amy Comer Brewington. He retired from Inman Mills in Enoree and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: JoAnn Guyton and husband Steve of Gaffney, Patti Nelson of Panama City, FL and Toni DeYoung and husband Rick of Duncan; a son, Fred "Fuzz" Brewington and wife Susan of Buffalo; a sister, Carrie Vaughan of Buffalo; a brother, Lee Brewington of Cross Anchor; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Bill Duncan of Union. Mr. Brewington was predeceased by a son Steve Brewington.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 30, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Alton Stone and Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Chris Lawson, Chris Brewington, Michael Brewington, Joey Guyton, Cody DeYoung, Travis McGaha and Kevin Brewington.

Johnny "John" Moon
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Johnny "John" Moon, age 47, husband of Colleen "Kelly" Eldred Moon of 200 Hames Avenue, Jonesville, SC died Tuesday, August 25, 2009.

Mr. Moon was born in Gorman, TX November 25, 1961, a son of the late Robert E. Lee Moon, Jr and Wilma Gethra Naylor Moon. He was a graduate of Cisco High School in Texas and was employed with Able Constructors in Greenville. Mr. Moon was a member of Glendale Baptist Church in Spartanburg and Cherokee Sportsman Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a loving husband and father.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Ashley Moon of the home; two sisters: Patricia Crumbacher of Jonesville and Ethel Ferebee of Osprey, FL and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Moon was predeceased by a brother, Jesse Moon.

Funeral services will be held 7:00 PM Friday, August 28, 2009 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Visitation will be held 6:00-7:00 PM Friday evening in the chapel prior to the service.

Gladys West Coward
Formerly of Union

Mrs. Gladys West Coward, 91, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Pepper Hill Nursing Facility in Aiken, SC. She was the loving wife of the late James Marvin Coward for fifty-eight years.

Mrs. Coward was born in Union, SC, December 16, 1917, to the late Mr. And Mrs. Ed (Eva Hames) West. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sara Olean West and brother, Edward West. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Jim Lancaster of Warrenville, SC. Mrs. Coward was retired from Milliken & Company, Ottaray Plant and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Interment will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Kenneth "Pee Wee" Duncan, age 33 of 2551 Jerusalem Rd., Pacolet, SC, husband of April Gregory Duncan of Ellenboro, NC, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009.

Mr. Duncan was born in Cleburne, TX January 27, 1976, a son of Lon Owens Duncan, Jr of Atlanta, Ga and Patricia Crumbacher of Pacolet. He was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Jessica Duncan, Mary Duncan and Kendra Duncan; three step-daughters: Dezarae Howell, Destiny Edwards and Megan Gregory;a special companion of eight years, Kimberly Howell; a step-daughter: Charlie Howell; a sister, Christy Duncan of Union; a brother, Dwayne Duncan of Bruce, MS and a step-father, Charles Crumbacher. Mr. Duncan was predeceased by a grandmother, Gethra Moon and a brother, Jesse Duncan.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held 1:00-3:00 PM Saturday in the chapel prior to the service.

Mrs. Geneal West Riley, age 75, widow of James Herbert Riley, Jr. of 101 Wendover Rd. Union, died Friday afternoon, August 21, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Riley was born in Union, August 5, 1934, a daughter of the late Frank Charles West and Ruby Lowe West. Mrs. Riley was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken and Co., having worked last at Milliken Research Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons; Rev. James Herbert Riley III and wife Cindi of Beaufort, SC and Dr. John Charles Riley and wife Dr. Grace Elena Mendez of Chesnee, SC; a daughter, Sarah Riley O’Shields and husband Lynn of Union; four Grandchildren, Joshua Charles Riley and wife Audrey, Caitlynn Elizabeth O’Shields, Hayden Thomas O’Shields and Christopher Samuel Mendez Riley; two sisters, Louise West Kingsmore of Rock Hill, SC and Helen West Abrams of Joanna, SC; two brothers, Charles Raymond West of Durham, NC and Jack West and wife Dee of Joanna, SC. Mrs. Riley was pre-deceased by a daughter Catherine Anne Riley, a sister, Josephine West and a brother, Woodrow West.

Wallace Erma Sprouse Blackmon, age 87, wife of Harold Shields Blackmon, Sr. of 714 Arthur Blvd. Union, SC died suddenly Saturday morning, August 22, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Blackmon was born in Union on December, 10, 1922, the daughter of the late John Wallace Sprouse and Pauline Howell Sprouse. Mrs. Blackmon was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia, SC. Mrs. Blackmon was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Jo Anne B. Lipscomb and husband Jerry of Union; a son Harold S. Blackmond, Jr.(Buddy) and wife Virginia of Union, three granddaughters; Jennifer L. McGee and husband Mike, Becca L Morrow and husband David both of Union and Melanie B. Jenkins and husband Charlie of Newberry, SC, a grandson Matthew Blackmon and wife Sara Beth of Atlanta, GA., great grandchildren; Mallory and Jake McGee and Bayla Morrow, a brother Sam Sprouse and wife Mary Ellen and a sister-in-law, Ann E. Mr. Jan W. Hagan

Mr. Jan W. Hagan, age 74, husband of Rebecca Billings Hagan of 116 Meadow Ln. Buffalo died August 22, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Hagan was born in Union, June 14, 1935 a son of the late Willie Regan Hagan and Flossie Kent Sinclair. He was employed with United Merchants – Union Mill for eighteen years. Mr. Hagan was a member of Putman Baptist Church and a Veteran of the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Beth Ann Foster of Union and Laura Graham and husband Fred of Ala.; a son: Phillip Hagan and wife Kim of Union;

a step-son: Ronnie Weathers and wife Nancy of Iowa; one sister: Betty Hickman of Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ted Hodges. Burial will be in the Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the service, in the Putman Baptist Church Social Hall.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Watson, Brandon Hagan, Jordan Hagan, Shane Adams, Mike Foster, and Allen Petty.

Ruby Wilson Smith
Buffalo, SC

Ruby Wilson Smith, age 85, of 140 Riley Rd. Buffalo, SC, went home to be with the Lord at 8:00 AM ,Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was the widow of James E. (Footsie) Smith.

Mrs. Smith was born in Tignall, GA on May 2, 1924 a daughter of the late Willie Wilson and Lucile Copeland Wilson. Mrs. Smith was retired from Lockhart Mill. Mrs Smith was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and the J. I.. Pruitt Sunday School Class and a former WMU member.

Surviving are a son, James E. (Jimmy) Smith and wife Vonnie of Buffalo; a sister Jewel E. Wilson of the home; two brothers, Marvin Wilson and wife Arlene of Union and D. J. Wilson and wife Lorene of Cowpens; grandchildren, Jamie Smith and wife Dianne of Buffalo, Tracy Smith and wife Shawna of Union and Donna Harrison and husband Doug of Buffalo; great grandchildren; Cassie Smith, Emily Smith, Tyler and Mary Beth Lancaster, Tony and Elizabeth Eubanks; nieces, Anita Hicks and husband Bobby and Linda Kelly and husband Jack of Union; and a nephew Gene Wilson and wife Beth of Columbia. Mrs. Smith was pre-deceased by an infant daughter, Brenda Smith; a brother Bobby R. Wilson and a sister, Leona W. Linder.

James H. Sexton, Jr.
Jonesville, S.C.

Mr. James Hillard Sexton, Jr., age 66, of 238 Gilead St., Jonesville, died at his home Thursday, August 20, 2009.

Mr. Sexton was born in Jonesville, November 4, 1942 a son of the late James H. Sexton, Sr. and Doris Gallman Sexton. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and a retired truck driver. Mr. Sexton was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Jonesville Unit and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons: Tony Sexton and wife Christi and Carroll Sexton all of Myrtle Beach; a step-daughter: Terri Gamble of North Carolina; a sister: Abby Thomasson and husband David of Rock Hill; a sister-in-law: Jean Deaton of Columbia; 2 grandsons: Hayes and Hayden Sexton; a very special friend; Vyral Bogan of Jonesville; a special adopted family: Donnie and Vicki Vaughan and children of Jonesville; a special adopted sister: Linda Griffin of Rock Hill; 2 nephews and a great-niece. Mr. Sexton was predeceased by a brother: Carroll Sexton.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30 PM prior to the service at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Edith B. Wilburn

Mrs. Edith Boling Wilburn, age 85, widow of Harold Wilburn of 248 Wesley Chapel Rd. Union, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Wilburn was born in Lockhart, December 2, 1923, a daughter of the late Jeff and Nora Burnett Boling. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and previously employed with Quincy’s Resturant in Union. Mrs. Wilburn had formerly worked at the Community Cash and Smith’s Drugs in Lockhart. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Lockhart Senior Citizens. Mrs. Wilburn was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter: Pam Wilson and husband Eddie with whom she made her home; a son: Jack R. Riddle of Middleburg, FL; five grandchildren: Missy Musser and husband Bill, Clay Wilson and wife Holly, Scott Riddle and wife Jennifer, Mary Jacqueline Riddle and Mr. and Mrs. J. Paul Riddle; four great-grandchildren: Lexie Wilson, Mitch Wilson, Claire Musser and Madison Riddle. She was predeceased by four sisters: Ann Parris, Grace Boling, Elizabeth Templeton and Ruth Brayton; and a brother: James Boling.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Steve Lemon and Mr. Merritt Wentz.

Mr. Elihue "June Bug" Abernathy, Jr age 51, husband of Anita Stone Abernathy of 141 RTG Dr., Laurens, SC died Monday, August 17, 2009 at Ascension Hospice Home in Irmo, SC.

Mr. Abernathy was born in Rome, Georgia, May 10, 1958, a son of Doris Lee "Beck" Knight of Laurens and the late Elihue Abernathy, Sr. He was formerly employed with Wilson Recycling of Laurens.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are three daughters: Ashlee Stone of Laurens, Vidalia Abernathy of Gilbert, SC and Leslie Edgins of Enoree; a son, Eric Edgins of Enoree; two sisters: Jean Marie Grant and Tammy Beck both of Laurens; four grandchildren and an special aunt and uncle, Pete and Barbara Bostic. Mr. Abernathy was predeceased by a sister, Shelia Michelle Knight and a brother, Danny Lee Beck.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Whitmire Cemetery conducted by Rev. Eddie Bledsoe.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Charles Harvey Long, age 57, husband of Betty Jean Garner Long of 837 Lovers Lane Rd., Union, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Long was born in Virginia, March 16, 1952, a son of the late George Long and Nell Rose Patrick Long.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Heather Long of Columbia; a niece, Dena Meador of Buffalo; four sisters and one brother.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held 12:00-1:30 PM Thursday at Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

Mr. James Lee Hicks, 47, husband of April Burris Hicks of 2699 Pinckney Hwy., Chester, died Sunday, August 16, 2009 from injuries received in a motocycle accident.

Mr. Hicks was born in Union, March 11, 1962 a son of Lemoa Moore Hicks of Union and the late Frank James Hicks. He was formerly employed with Greenleaf and attended Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters: Wendy Lee Hicks of Union and Sabrina Guynelle Inman of the home; four sons: Christopher Matthew Hicks, Hunter Alexander Inman and Braxton David Lee Hicks all of the home and Joshua Kyle Hicks of Union; a sister: Kay Vaughan; a brother Larry Wayne Hicks both of Union; three grandchildren: Nathaniel, Isaiah, and Jaheim Hall; and several neices and nephews. Mr. Hicks was predeceased by a brother, Roger Dale Hicks.

A memorial services will be held 6:00 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Roy Lowe, Jr. and Rev. Ricky Cook. The family will received friends immediately following the service at the chapel.

Mrs. Rebecca Ann Canupp Cromer, age 59 of 268 Askew Circle, Union, SC, widow of Gary C.Cromer, Sr died Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

Mrs. Cromer was born in the Bullocks Creek Community of York County on February 28, 1950, a daughter of the late Marion Canupp and Martha Inman Canupp. She was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School nad a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Randy Johnson and wife Kaye of Union; a daughter, Christy Locklear and husband Kerry of Gaffney; a step-son, Gary Cromer and wife Beth of Union; a step-daughter, Cindy Cromer of Lockhart; two sisters: Betty Blackwell and husband Jerry of Blacksburg and Shirley McDaniel and husband Floyd of Hickory Grove; two brothers: Jim Canupp and wife Marie of Bullocks Creek and John Canupp of Columbia; four grandsons; one granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cromer was predeceased by a brother, Frazier Canupp.

Mrs. Dorothy Cudd Conley, age 87, of 287 Red Oak Rd., Barnwell, SC, formerly of Adamsburg, widow of Walter M. Conley died Monday, August 10, 2009 at Barnwell County Hospital.

Mrs. Conley was born in Lockhart, SC, November 13, 1921, a daughter of the late Nick Cudd and Donie Bailey Cudd. She and her husband were former Residential Building Contractors. Mrs. Conley was a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons: Henry D. Conley with whom she made her home and Charles R. Conley and wife Pat of Clinton; a son-in-law, Johnny Epps of Blair; a daughter-in-law, Dianne Conley Stephenson; a sister-in-law, Valerie Conley Garner both of Union; an aunt, Pearline Adams of Jonesvile; two special nieces: Donna C. Brown and husband Tom of Mt. Pleasant and Tootsie Sumner and husband Charles of Abbeville; six grandchildren: James Bradford "Barry" Epps and wife Dianne, June Hanna and husband Lee, Lou Cunningham and husband Bo, Jason Wayne Conley, Heather Loftis and husband Brandon and Becky Vaughn and husband Robert; nine great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Travis Benton, Megan and Katelyn Conley, Charlie and Kimberly Vaughn, Brett Loftis and Makya and MaKayla Cunningham and a number of other nieces and nephews. Mr. Charles Randall "Randy" McMurray, age 47 of 2258 SC Hwy 72, Whitmire died Friday, August 7, 2009 at the home of his parents.

Mr. McMurray was born in Newberry, November 30, 1961, a son of Charles E. and Carolyn O’Shields McMurray of Whitmire. He was a graduate of Whitmire High School and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons: Dustin and Jacob Brown both of Newberry; a sister: Jodi Huntsinger; a brother: Reggie McMurray both of Whitmire; aunts and uncles; Jackie and Allen Frazier of Newberry, Charles and Ann O’Shields of Irmo and Marion and Uncle Dick of New York; two nieces: Leslie and Nicole McMurray; two nephews: John and Charles McCarley.

The family will be at the home of his parents, Charles and Carolyn McMurray, 2242 SC Hwy. 72, Whitmire, where a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Cynthia H. Ireland

Mrs. Cynthia Hutcherson Ireland, age 57 of 2680 Buffalo-West Spring Hwy. Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg after a long illness.

Mrs. Ireland was born in Charlotte, NC, June 14, 1952, a daughter of Nina Pearl Spillers Cook of the home and the late Oscar Hutcherson. She was formerly employed with Milliken Co. Gillespie Plant and was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband: Gary Ireland; two daughters: Beth Bagwell of Rincon, GA and Patricia Cooke of Chesnee; six brothers: Bobby Hutcherson of GA, Billy Cook and wife Arlene, Ricky Cook and wife Sheila, Randy Cook and wife Cindy, Timmy Cook, and Ronnie Cook and wife Teresa all of Buffalo; six grandchildren: Justin Bowie, Stephanie Bagwell, Kayla Bagwell, Timothy Cooke, Jr., Stephen Bagwell and Christopher Cooke; and one great-granddaughter: Edyn Caldwell. Mrs. Ireland was predeceased by a sister, Martha Dougherty and a brother: Marty Cook.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Timothy Cooke, Jr., Stephen Bagwell, Justin Bowie, Ronnie Cook, Timmy Cook, Randy Cook, Wayne Coker and J.T. Vinson.

Mr. James Manley "Jimmy" Adams, age 69, husband of Dana Rogers Adams of 116 Tucker Rd., Spartanburg, SC died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Adams was born in Union, SC August 11, 1939, a son of the late Allison M. Adams and Reola Mitchell Adams. He was a graduate of Union High School and Clemson University. Mr. Adams was a retired project engineer having formerly worked with J.E. Sirrine Company in Greenville. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard - Lockhart Unit.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lisa Adams Allen of Spartanburg; two sons: Mark Adams and wife Susie of Simpsonville and Steve Adams of Spartanburg; two grandchildren: Elleson Allen of Spartanburg and Alex Dye of Ft. Mill, SC.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mrs. Jennie Smith Liner, age 81, widow of James E. "Chick" Liner of 208 Birchwood Dr. died Monday, August 3, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Liner was born in Union, October 17, 1927, a daughter of the late Talmadge Dewitt Smith and Emma Nichols Smith. She was a graduate of Union High School and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Anne Rampey and husband John W. and Jane Petty and husband Dewey all of Union; a special niece: Felicia Bennett and husband Jim of Lexington; five granddaughters: Rebecca Schambach and husband Dave of Charleston; Margaret Goodson and husband Clint, Emma Monroe, Catherine Wilson and Jennie Louise Wilson all of Union; two grandsons: Benjamin Hodge of Union and John W. Rampey, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA; three great-granddaughters: Alayna Monroe, Kaylyn Hodge and Claire Monroe all of Union; two brothers: Dewitt Smith and wife Jean of Greenville and Harold Smith and wife Margaret of Union. Mrs. Liner was predeceased by a daughter: Jamie Liner and a sister: Annabel Alverson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Franklin D. "Buddy" Morris. A private burial will be held at Rosemont Cemetery.

Carl P. Campbell, Jr.
Jonesville, SC

God has called a very special person home. A loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, Carl P. Campbell, Jr went home to be with his Lord on Friday, July 31, 2009, surrounded by his family. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Lydia Wix Campbell of Jonesville; two sons: Richard Campbell of Moore and Larry Campbell of Anderson; a daughter, Teena Campbell Heym of Jonesville; four grandchildren: Jeff Campbell of Anderson, Candice Campbell of Lake Lure, Lindsey Steigerwalt of Union and Lauren Campbell McGaha of Sumter; two great grandchildren: Kyle and Kendall of Spartanburg; a sister, Virginia Matthews of Newberry and a brother, Walter Archie Campbell of Wellford. Mr. Campbell was predeceased by a sister,Cleo Cooper formerly of Whitmire.

Mr. Campbell was born in Woodson, Virginia, March 25, 1927, a son of the late Carl P. Campbell, Sr and Mattie Lindsey Campbell. The family moved to South Carolina in 1933. Both Carl and his brother Archie enlisted in the Navy during World War II. Carl served on a Destroyer in the Atlantic and his brother served on a Battle Ship in the Pacific. Mr. Campbell’s proud military heritage continued with both his sons serving in the military during the later years of the Vietnam era and a granddaughter who is currently serving in the Air Force. While still in the Navy, Mr. Campbell met his wife of 61 years, Lydia, and they were married on December 4, 1947. After being released from the service, he went to work in the textile industry. He joined Spartan Mills in 1957 ;and worked at the Startex Plant until 1980, when he took a position at the Spartan Mills, Jonesville Plant of Rosemont as Plant Manager. He was very active in the community and served on the Union Rotary Club and the Union County Chamber of Commerce. He retired in 1994. Carl was a very compassionate person. He always carried in his car an extra coat or two and would give one to anyone he saw in need of a little warmth and care. He spent all of his retirement years caring for his family. His children and grandchildren will miss him greatly. His last request was, "Take care of my beautiful wife." We will Dad. See you soon.

Family visitation will be held Wednesday evening, August 5, 2009 from 6:30-8:30 PM at Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 W. South Street, Union, SC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday at Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Andy Parker of Unity Baptist Church, Roebuck, SC. Final honors will follow in Jonesville Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Campbell, Cary Cooper, Gerald Eaves, Mike George, Jim Hill and Mark Reynolds.

John Donald Quinn, Jr.
Jonesville, SC

Mr. John Donald Quinn, Jr, age 82, husband of Stella Shetley Quinn of 305 Elford Grove Rd., Jonesville, SC went home to be with the Lord Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Quinn was born in Greer, SC July 29, 1927, a son of the late John D. Quinn, Sr and Nellie Mae Watson Quinn. He was retired from the City of Las Vegas after nineteen years of service. Mr. Quinn was a faithful member of Browns’ Creek Baptist Church and a Retired Veteran of the US Navy Sea Bees; a member of the American Legion Jonesville Post, the Fleet Reserve and a Lifetime member of the VFW in Spartanburg. Mr.Quinn was a loving and devoted husband, father, "Papa John", a friend to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife of twenty years are three sons: Malcombe Donald Quinn and wife Lupe of Eugene, OR, Ronnie Stevens of AL, and Mickey Stevens and wife Doreen, of MD; a daughter: Darlene Anderson of AL; a stepson, Earl Nelson Barrier,Jr and wife Nona of Batesburg, SC; a step-daughter, Teresa B. Gillian and husband Bobby of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren: Dominic Quinn, Travis Barrier, April Gillian, Robert Gillian and wife Brandie, Cynthia Burt and the children of Mickey Stevens; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Billy Ray Quinn and wife Gail; eight sisters: Dorothy King, Betty Sanders and husband Kenneth, Aileen Knighton and husband Marvin, Geraldine Wright, Shirley Wilson and husband Bill, Patricia Scott, Mary Humphries and husband Ronnie and Glenda Gilbert and scores of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Browns Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial will be Union Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors.

Marion David Nelson, Sr.
Whitmire, SC

Mr. Marion David Nelson, Sr age 79, husband of Jewell Baker Nelson of 110 Duncan Street, Whitmire, SC died Monday, August 3,2009 at his home.

Mr. Nelson was born in Whitmire, SC September 1, 1929, a son of the late Robert Andersen Nelson and Annie Wilson Nelson. He was a graduate of Whitmire High School and a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church. Mr Nelson was a Veteran of the US Air Force and retired from the Army National Guard - Union Unit.

Surviving are two daughters and two sons: David Nelson, Jr. of Taylors, Kay Nelson Dillard of Whitmire, Debbie Nelson Everhart and husband Tony of Pacolet and Rusty Nelson of Whitmire; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Elanor N. Evans of Johnston, SC; step-children: Donna C. Lathrop and husband Roger of Pomaria, Bridgett C. Fain and husband Mike of Whitmire and Sunday C. Powers of Eastover; ten step-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Nelson was predeceased by a step-son, Billy G. Cudd.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Whitmire Cemetery conducted by Pastor Kenny Weaver.

Active pallbearers will be Matthew Fain, Kevin Fain, Daniel Powers, Heath Ginn, John Nobler and Harold Whicker. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Bullard, Donnie Henry and Devon Henry.
