Mrs. Mozelle Lawson McDaniel, age 77 of 213 Perry Rd., Woodruff, SC, widow of Malcolm McDaniel died Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. McDaniel was born in Union County, SC April 7, 1932, a daughter of the late James B. Lawson and Louise Sherbert Lawson. She retired from Ace Sweater and was a member of West Springs Baptist Church where she was over the Nursery Department for many years.

Surviving are two daughters: Dianne Sumner and husband Marty of Pacolet and Dale Foster; a son, Wayne McDaniel both of Woodruff; six grandchildren: Ryan Buff and wife Scotty of Charleston, Michael Sprouse and wife Athena of Taylors, Michelle Crocker and husband Brian of Columbia, Gena Buff of Charleston, Kyle Davis and wife Brandi of Fountain Inn and Jessica McDaniel of Spartanburg and four great-grandchildren: Taylor Sprouse, Lexi Davis, Brie Crocker and Ayden Segarra.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 2, 2010 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ray Bobo, David Taylor, Sammy Cooke, Kenneth Horne, Chris Hatfield and Richard Ireland.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, 686 Jeff Davis Dr., Spartanburg, S.C. 29303.

Robert T. Martin

Mr. Robert Thomas Martin, age 77, husband of Clara Barker Martin of N. Hwy 150, Pecan St., Lot 37, Pacolet, SC, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Martin was born in Spartanburg, January 10, 1932 a son of the late Broadus Shuford Martin and Florence Gibson Martin. He was retired after 20 plus years with BASF in Spartanburg and was a former member of the SC National Guard, Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 54 years, are two daughters: Kathy A. Martin and friend Ronnie Lee Parker, Jr. and April Dawn Martin and fiancee Tyler Crow all of Pacolet; one son: Robert L. Martin and wife Beth of Union; two sisters: Thelma Powell and Geraldine Kirby both of Pacolet and one brother: Jack Martin of White Stone.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 1, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Pacolet conducted by Rev. Tommy Sparks. Burial will be in White Rose Cemetery in Pacolet.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Grace S. Dezerin
Jonesville, S.C.

Mrs. Grace Sprouse DeZern, age 86, widow of James E. DeZern, Sr., formerly of Jonesville, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at Rosecrest Nursing Center in Inman.

Mrs. DeZern was born in Camden, NJ, March 18, 1923, a daughter of the late T.D. and Mary Odom Sprouse. She was retired from Milliken Research in Spartanburg and was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church. Mrs. DeZern was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Douglas DeZern and wife Marnie of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren: Erin, Lauren, Caitlin, Hope, Maria and Grace DeZern, and Jane Capel. She was predeceased by a son: James E. DeZern, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by Dr. Jim Ivey and Rev. Scott Gilmer. Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service.

Dora G. Blackwell

Retired from Milliken

Dora Elizabeth Blackwell, widow of Charles W. Blackwell of 440 Pacolet St. Jonesville, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Blackwell was born in Pauline, Spartanburg County, December 5, 1935, a daughter of the late Herbert Gossett and Virginia Murph Gossett. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School as Salutatorian of her class and attended Cecil’s Business College. She was retired from Milliken and Co. After 38 years of service.

Mrs. Blackwell was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Jonesville, where she was an active choir member, Ladies Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women’s Circle and Administrative Board. She was also a member of the Union County Senior Citizens Club. She helped start the Cemetery Trust Fund for New Hope United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Eastern Star, Martha Chapter 769, Union, where she had served as Worthy Matron. She served as pianist of her Church, Primary Sunday School teacher, Financial Secretary of Church for 17 years, Treasurer of Ladies Sunday School Class and Secretary of the Missionary Circle.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Scott Hood and a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jodie Blackwell all of Jonesville; a sister Bobbie Jean Lawson and husband Harold of Union, a brother Albert Gossett and wife Meredith of Greenville; six grandchildren, Matthew Hood, Charles Bryson Hood, Emily Hood, Hunter Blackwell, Hagan Blackwell, and Harley Blackwell all of Jonesville.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM ,Monday, December 28, 2009 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. James Ivey, and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Gossett, Paul Montaperto, Lynn Blackwell, Oren Harvey, Jr. Harold Murph, and Robert M. Gossett.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Monday at 2:45 PM, to form the honorary escort: Members of the Lady’s and Men’s Sunday School Classes, Missionary Circle, Church Choir of New Hope Church and Nancy Garner, Shirley Kerr, Rev. & Mrs Jerry Lawson, Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Groves, Mr. & Mrs. B. F. Ledford, Mr. & Mrs. Harold Cookson, Tommy Benfield, Brad Queen, Chad Gredory, Billy Gossett, Jimmy Gossett, Lee Wayne Youngblood, Lewis White, Calvin King and Lesesne Scott.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30, PM, Sunday, December 27, 2009 and will be placed in the church at 2:00 PM, Monday to await the hour of service.

George Mitchell
Joensville, S.C.

Mr. George Mitchell, age 76, husband of Betty Dabbs Mitchell of 121 Forest St., Jonesville, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Spartanburg Restorative Care after a long illness.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Union, October 26, 1933 a son of the late Issac " Bud" and Nora Hall Mitchell. He was retired from the US Army having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Mitchell was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and VFW. A member of Jonesville Baptist Church, he was in the Ivey White Sunday School Class and a member of the Happy Hearts Club of the church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Teresa Mitchell of Jonesville; a son: Howard Mitchell and wife Debra of Union; three granddaughters: Amanda Guyton, Brittany Mitchell and Jessie Mitchell; one grandson: William Mitchell; a sister-in-law: Muriel Mitchell of Union; a special friend: Devin Black of Jonesville and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mitchell was predeceased by two brothers: Bob Mitchell and Billy Mitchell and his wife Ponese Mitchell.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Jonesville Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens with full Military Rites.

Members of the Ivey White Sunday School Class, fellow Masons, member of the VFW and Mr. Mitchell’s fishing and coffee buddies are all asked to sit in a group.

The family will receive friends 7:00 until 9:00 PM Monday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Frank D. Cody
Union, S.C.

Mr. Frank D. Cody, age 73, husband of Jackie Wilburn Cody of 312 Catawba St., Union, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Cody was born in Union, March 6, 1936 a son of the late John and Janie Nixon Cody. He was retired from Ben’s Paint Store after 30 years and was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. Mr. Cody was a veteran of the US Air Force and the US Army having served during the Korean War and was also a member of the BPO Elks and the American Legion in Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son: Don Cody and wife Donna; a granddaughter: Kayla Cody all of Union; three sisters: Mary Phillips and husband Arthur of Union, Sarah Crocker of Johnston, and Jeanette Huggins of Marietta, GA, two brothers: Dr. John Cody and B.W. Cody both of Union. Mr. Cody was predeceased by a sister: Ella Kirby and three brothers: Jeter, Thomas and Charles Cody.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

Ms. Wendy Horne Eaves, age 40 of 1051 S. Jonesville Hwy, Jonesville, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 after a sudden illness.

Ms. Eaves was born in Union, December 22, 1968, a daughter of the late Victor "Samson" Horne, Sr. and Elizabeth Knox Horne Davis. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and employed with C.R. Brands Co. in Spartanburg. Ms. Eaves was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and attended Oakbrook Community Church.

Surviving are a son: Derrek Eaves of the home; a sister: Kim Roark and husband Tommy "Sqeaky"; two brothers: Rodney Horne and wife Julie all of Jonesville and Victor "Buggy" Horne, Jr. of Pacolet; a special friend: Bo O’Dell of the home; 6 nieces and nephews: Josh, Jada, Trint, Jodie, Ethan and Cassie; a great-niece, Jayla and a great-nephew, Dalton.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess.

Ms. Eaves will be carried to the home of her sister, Kim and "Squeaky" Roark, 697 Bobby Faucette Rd., Jonesville, where the family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Barbara G. Bostic
Whitmire, S.C.

Mrs. Barbara G. Bostic, age 72, wife of Lawrence Carl "Pete" Bostic of 608 Railroad Ave., Whitmire, passed away, Friday, December 18, 2009 at the National Health Care - Clinton.

Mrs. Bostic was born in Rome, GA, July 22, 1937 a daughter of the late Harvey and Irene Beck. She retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and was a volunteer with the Whitmire Jayces.

Mrs. Bostic was a member of Master’s Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 51 years are two daughters: Patricia Wilson and husband Sammy of Union and Darlene Styles of Whitmire; one son: Pete Bostic and wife Marta of Whitmire; one sister: Doris Knight of Laurens; a special nephew reared in the home, Brice "Smokey" Steele of Joanna; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bostic was predeceased by two sisters and 3 brothers.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Whitmire Cemetery conducted by Rev. Eddie Bledsoe and Rev. Bill Yon.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of her daughters: Darlene Styles, 46 McDonald St., Whitmire and Patricia Wilson, 123 Sam Wilson Rd., Union.

Nellie Knox Black
Union, SC

Mrs. Nellie Knox Black, age 81 of 1221 Arthur Blvd, Union, SC passed away peacefully at the home Wednesday, December 16, 2009 surrounded by her family, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Black was born in Chester County, SC June 12, 1928 and was a lifelong resident of Union. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Rena Henderson Knox and was of the Baptist Faith.

Mrs. Black is survived by a daughter, Sue Black of the home; sons: Tab Black and wife Pat of Spartanburg, Ronnie Black of Brunswick, GA and Terry Black of Prescott, AZ; a sister, Ollie Mae Todd of Columbia; a granddaughter, Angela Robertson, who was raised in the home and her husband Levi of Spartanburg; nine great-grandchildren including Laci and Addison Robertson who were her precious angels and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert Branch officiating.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

The family request in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Harmony Care Hospice, 700 Plaza Circle, Suite N, Clinton, SC 29325.

Mr. Charles Glenn White, age 66, husband of Zandra Tollison White of 1554 Browns Creek Church Rd. Union died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at his home.

Mr. White was born in York County, SC August 26, 1943, a son of the late Marcus and Carrie White. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and a cattle farmer.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Marcus Glenn White and Charles William White both of the home.

Graveside Services will be at held 3:00 PM Friday, December 18, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

John Douglas Smith
Formally of Union

John Douglas Smith, age 66, husband of Sharon Greer Smith, of James Island, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on the morning of December 13, 2009.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, SC, October 23, 1943 the son of the late Clarence Douglas Smith and Pauline Lane Smith. He was a member of Harbor View Presbyterian Church and was in the Charleston Men’s Chorus. Mr. Smith was retired as District Insurance Manager for Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company and was a sales representative with Brown and Williams Tobacco Company and S&M Brands. He also retired from the South Carolina National Guard where he served as a staff Sergeant. Mr. Smith was a member and past president of the St. Andrews Rotary Club, a former member of the Kiwanis Club of North Charleston, and served as president of the Life Underwriters Association. He loved to fish and golf.

Surviving besides his wife Sharon are a son, Troy Douglas Smith of Charleston, SC; one daughter, Buffie Smith Copeland and her husband Jeffrey of Charleston, SC; one sister, Mary Smith Hailman and her husband Gene of Union, SC; five grandchildren: Taylor, Douglas, and Matthew Smith, and Lane and Seth Copeland all of Charleston, SC; his mother and father-in-law, Paul and Margarette Greer of Union, SC; his brother-in-law, Paul S. Greer, II and his wife Karen of Union, SC; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Harbor View Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday evening, December 14, 2009 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, Calhoun St., Charleston, SC.

Mrs. Joy Rue Treadway Sumner, age 84, widow of Willie E. Sumner formally of 117 Sunview Road, Prosperity, SC died Sunday, December 13, 2009 after a extended illness.

Mrs Sumner was born in Union, SC September 23, 1925 a daughter of the late John Wesley and Nancy Jane Rector Treadway. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Prosperity, SC and retired Beauty shop owner/operator.

Surviving are a son: Willie E. "Billy" Sumner and wife Rita of Prosperity; a grandson: Darryl Scott Sumner and wife Susan of York; a great-granddaughter: Torrie Sumner and great-grandson: Dalton Sumner both of Rock Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews including Dot Berry of Union. Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by a son: John Wesley Sumner; two sisters: Sallie Varner, and Betty Cummings; seven brothers: Doyle, Curt, George "Lit", Andy, Clyde, Ray, and Wesley "Tee" Treadway.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Frances Arline Tidwell Wilson

Mrs. Frances Arline Tidwell Wilson, age 84, widow of Marvin Allen Wilson, formerly of 2708 Lockhart Hwy., died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Chester, SC January 1, 1925 a daughter of the late John Sexton and Frances Robertson Tidwell. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Wilson was retired from Conso Products.

Survivors are a daughter, Anita Hicks and husband Bobby of Union; a son, Gene Wilson and wife Beth of Columbia; four sisters: Doris Loyd and Mary Louise Tidwell both of Union; Marcella Shirey of Irmo and, Athalee Dickerson of Elgin; one brother, John E. Tidwell of West Columbia; four grandchildren: Kim Williams and husband Johnny of Union, Melanie Fleming and husband Rodney of Southern Pine, NC, Joy Waters of Inman, and Stephanie Smith of Pacolet; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Dorsey and a son, Steven "Chigger" Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Chapel at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 15, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Wilson Doil Arthur

Mr. Wilson Doil Arthur, age 89, husband of Maria Gibbs Arthur of 305 Richard Street, Union, SC died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at his home after a period of declining health.

Mr. Arthur was born in Union, SC November 3, 1920, a son of the late Morris Lefoy Arthur and Dovie Lounette Bates Arthur. He was a graduate of Union High School; retired from Cone Mills - Carlisle Finishing and formerly worked with the South Carolina Wildlife Department. Mr. Arthur was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church; was an avid Gamecock Fan and a member of the Gamecock Club. He was an active golfer as long as his health permitted and was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-one years are two daughters: Linda Arthur of Buffalo and Paulette Arthur Goff and husband Aron of Myrtle Beach; an adopted daughter, Betty J. Randolph of Buffalo; two sisters: Betty Arthur McNease of Union and Joyce Arthur Parsons of Ohio; a granddaughter, Sallie McLaughlin and husband Thomas; a great-grandson, Thomas McLaughlin, V and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Arthur was predeceased by three sisters: Zanoma Davis, Frances Arthur and Virginia Robertson and two brothers: James M. Arthur, Sr. and William "Bill" Arthur.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Terry Mitchell and Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James M. Arthur, Jr., Woody Robertson, Tim McNeace, William Earl Sprouse, Jeff McNeace, Mac McNeace and Torrence Inman. The following are asked to sit in a group: friends from Andy’s, The Palmetto House and Fairwood Golf Course and members of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Ruby Casey Allen, age 86, formerly of Lockhart, SC died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Allen would have been married sixty-eight years this year to the late Raymond C. Allen

Mrs. Allen was born in Union County, SC September 12, 1923, a daughter of the late Luda C. Casey and Ella Porter Casey. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Virginia Sumner and husband Bill and Susan Boling all of Lancaster; three sons: Phillip Allen and wife Wanda of Villa Rica, GA, Kevin Allen and wife Debbie and Joseph "Joey" Allen and wife Denise all of Lockhart; fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by a son, Christopher "Chris" Allen and two sisters, Frances Stewart and Lucile Adams.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 13, 2009 at New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery in Chester conducted by Rev. Bill Sumner and Rev. Ben Hill.

Mrs. Mary Ann Hooper Kirby, age 60, wife of William W. "Bill" Kirby, Jr died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Union, SC September 8, 1949, a daughter of the late O’Dell Hooper and Agnes Gunning Hooper. She was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Harry From’s Department Store. Mrs. Kirby was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kayla K. Jenkins and husband Zack of Seneca; a sister, Gaynelle Wade and husband Thomas of Union; a brother Harold Dean Hooper of Columbia; a grandson, Peyton Jenkins and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 13, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. John Irby Blalock, age 86 of Woolawn Manor Apts, Apt A5, Union, SC died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Blalock was born in Union, SC January 28, 1923, a son of the late Charles D. Blalock and Pearl Betenbaugh Blalock. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Furman University. Mr. Blalock was retired from Cone Mills and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II.

Surviving are two sisters: Frances B. Bowling of Greenwood and Ruby B. Singleton of Charlotte, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, December 11, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Home Forest conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Friday prior to the service.

Charles Harold Hawkins, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. Charles Harold Hawkins, Sr., age 86, husband of Raye Horn Hawkins of 712 Arthur Blvd., Union, S.C. died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Hawkins was born in the Monarch Community, Union, S.C., November 16, 1923, a son of the late William Wallace Hawkins and Ora Davis Hawkins. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from USC-Union as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where he served as former treasurer of the Tom Alexander Sunday School Class; was co-founder of Cub Scout Pack 33 at Foster Park and was a fifty year member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hawkins was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served in World War II.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Adams Cabaniss and husband Allen of Union; a son, Charles Harold Hawkins, Jr and fiancee’ Carrie of Winchester, TN; three grandchildren: Laura Bailey of Charleston, Joe Adams of Santuck and Tonya Foster and husband Richard of Pauline; two great-grandchildren: Hunter and Peyton Foster; two sisters: Lena Hawkins Bosco of Winter Garden, FL and Jean Liudquist of Chicago, IL. Mr. Hawkins was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers: Lois Owenby, Mae Kitchens, Grace Hawkins, Terry Hawkins, Ruby Adkins and Oren Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Lois Johnson Murphy, age 84 of 723 Clayhill Rd., Pelion, SC, formerly of Lockhart died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Murphy was born in Georgia, May 14, 1925, a daughter of the late A.B. and Mammie Johnson and was a graduate of Union High School. She was retired from textiles and was formerly employed with Family Dollar. Mrs. Murphy was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are three daughters: Becky Crocker of Pelion, Deborah Bradburn and husband Montie of Jonesville and Michelle Wilhoit of Pelion; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Murphy was predeceased by two sons, Marshall Ray and Junior Murphy.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, December 12, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Mike McGowan and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Lou Price Mallett, age 77, wife of Vincent Mallett of 801 South Boyce St. Union, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Care surrounded by her family after a long illness.

Mrs. Mallett was born in Union, April 18, 1932 a daughter of the late Frank and Lillie Waldrop Price. She was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church and retired from Conso Products. Mrs. Mallett was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter: Cynthia Mallett of Union; a son: Rick V. Mallett and wife Debbie of Union; four sisters: Margie Cope, Marie Atkinson, Minnie McCraw and husband Kenneth, and Lillie Garner and husband Julian all of Union; one brother: Lawrence Price and wife Shirley of Union; four grandchildren: Donny Bobo and wife Debra, Vonda Inglett and husband Russ, Rick Mallett II and wife Gen, and Rocky Mallett; three great-grandchildren: Caleb and Zoie Inglett and Clayton Bobo. Mrs. Mallett was predeceased by a daughter: Vickie Darlene Mallett, a sister: Frances Henderson, and three brothers: Arthur, Earl and George Price.

Mrs. Henderson was born in Union, May 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Marion E. and Viola Mabry Crocker. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church and a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Henderson was retired from the Belk Department Store.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son Anthony F. Henderson, I and wife, Teresa of Union; a sister, Virginia (Jent) Foster of Lockhart; a brother, Marion E. Crocker and wife Nancy of Union; three grandchildren: Anthony F. Henderson, II and wife Katy, Morgan H. Rholetter and husband Allen and Gordon A. Henderson and fiancee’, Nicole Howell; three great grandchildren: Sarah Hope Henderson, Dakota Hunter Rholetter, Kavelin Gage Rholetter and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Henderson was predeceased by a son, Lester Gene Henderson and two sisters, Hazel C. Puckett and Linda C. Busbee.

Mrs. Irene Vinson Poole, age 89, widow of John P. Poole, Sr., of 128 Riley Rd., Buffalo, passed away Monday December 7, 2009 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Mrs. Poole was born in Buffalo, May 9, 1920, a daughter of the late George Boyd Vinson and Bedie Price Vinson Allen. She was retired after 25 years with Belk’s Dept. Store in Union and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was a member of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class. Mrs. Poole was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Denise I. Magaha and husband Richard of Anderson; a grandson: Brian H. Isbell; a granddaughter: Kimberly P. Shepherd and husband Michael of Carson City, NV; 6 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Melissa, Ki-rin, Axis, Matthew, and Andrew; nieces: Joann A. Huskey, Dianne and Jimmy Johnson, Karen Wilson, Lynn Sullivan and nephew, Phillip Poole; a daughter-in-law: Dr. Victoria L. Moore of Birmingham, AL; and other cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Poole was predeceased by a daughter: Sherri P. Isbell, a son: John P. Poole, Jr. and a sister: Geneal V. Walker.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Gideon Long.

Mrs. Juanita Virginia Sanders Comer, age 88, of 134 Highland Dr. Union, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 6, 2009 after a brief illness. She was the widow of W. Marshall Comer to whom she was married for 61 years. Mrs. Comer was born August 26, 1921 the daughter of the late William Thomas Sanders and Cleora Gallman Sanders. She graduated from Union High School, and recently attended her 70th class reunion. Mrs. Comer was a licensed beautician and cosmetologist. She formerly worked at the "Fabric House" and at Nationwide Insurance Agency. An active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, she was a member of the Mary Garner Sunday School Class, and The Keenagers. Mrs. Comer was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Joe Lawson of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, William (Billy) M. Comer, Jr. and Nancy Rash Comer of San Diego, CA; a granddaughter, Erin Comer of San Diego, CA; five grandsons, Greg Lawson and wife Kim of Laurens, Lynn Lawson and wife Kelly of Union, David Lawson and wife Holly of Union, Jason Lawson and wife Marni of Chapin, and Brett Comer of San Diego, CA; and eight great-grandchildren, Leah, Will, Isaac, John David, Joseph, Harrison, Parker and Patten and two life long family friends, Hazel Vinson Lawson and Margaret Gault. Mrs. Comer was the last surviving member of her immediate family; she was predeceased by four brothers, Edwin Sanders, Curtis Sanders, Manning Sanders and Carol Sanders and two sisters, Reba Murphy and Will Lena Kirby. She was also predeceased by a brother-in-law, Rev. A. Heyward Comer of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman, Rev. Tommy Comer, Rev. Mike Moody and Mr. Rick Jeffcoat. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Howell was born in Pea Ridge, SC August 10, 1922, a daughter of the late James David Fowler and Amanda Jones Fowler. She attended Kelly Pinckney School and was a Personal Care Health Care Provider. Mrs. Howell was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jerry Earl Howell of Maitland, FL; two sisters: Wilma F. Howell and husband Ned and Mable F. Hyder; a brother, Harrison "Sonny" Fowler and wife Hazel all of Union; 2 grandchildren; Tracey H. Kawczak and husband Robert of Fleming Island, FL and Jerry E. Howell, Jr. and wife Kim of Lithia, FL;6 great-grandchildren: Peyton and Karissa Kawczak, Carter and Gabrielle Howell and Bethany and Dustin Fletcher; and a number of neices and nephews. Mr. Wade Herman Howell, age 80 widow of Bobbie Wilbanks Howell of 1297 Meansville Rd., Union, died Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Howell was born in Buffalo, April 14, 1929 a son of the late Herbert and Onie Johnson Howell. He was retired from United Merchants Buffalo Plant and was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Mary New and husband Leroy and Teresa Waldrop all of Jonesville; one son: James Howell and wife Perri of Spartanburg; one sister: Frances Candler and husband Harold of Union; one step-daughter: Sandra Bobo of Union; two step-son: Clyde Seymore of Union and Billy Seymore of Joanna; 14 grandchildren and 3 very special great-grandchildren: Paul Heatherly Raine York, and Alayna Becknell. Mr. Howell was predeased by a daughter: Paula Heatherly, two sister: Doris Palmer and Geraldine Bridges, two brothers: Donald and Maurice Howell and a son-in-law: Wayne Waldrop.

Mrs. Ann Stevens Gist Sumner, age 78, formerly of Main Street, Buffalo, SC, widow of James Clyde "J.C." Sumner died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at White Oak Manor in York, SC.

Mrs. Sumner was born in the West Springs Community of Union County, SC, October 26, 1931, a daughter of the late James Stevens and Myrtle West Stevens. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and was formerly employed with the Excelsior Plant and Jerry’s Express in Santuc. Mrs. Sumner was a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Patti G. McNease and husband Tim of Union; a son, Richard C. Gist and wife Pam of Brandon, FL; two grandchildren: Jonathan "JR" Gist of Brandon, FL and Leslie Blackwell of Spartanburg.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 5, 2009 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Visitation will be held in the church immediately following the service.
