Donald Richard "Red" Garner

Donald Richard "Red" Garner, age 50 of 341 Deer Haven Road, Jonesville, SC died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. Garner was born in Kelton, SC April 19, 1958, a son of Kedrick and Rebecca Little Garner of Jonesville. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was owner-operator of Richard Garner Logging. Mr. Garner was a cattle farmer, an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. He was a loving father and devoted son.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Lindsay Garner of the home; three brothers: Bob Garner and wife Lisa of Union, Bill Garner of Jonesville and David Garner of Clemmons, NC; paternal grandmother, Mandy Lou Garner of Jonesville; aunts and uncles: Anne Adams, Allan Little, Mary E. "C" Bell, Betty Sanders, Julian Garner, Margie Hyatt, Paulette Moore, Annette Sanders and Terry Garner.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Todd Little, Paul Little Barnette, John Garner, Dusty Ivey, Dicky Fowler and Jamie Morris.

Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 PM Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of his parents, Kedrick and Rebecca Garner, 185 Deer Haven Road, Jonesville, SC 29353.

Bertha Harris McCoy
Union, SC

Mrs. Bertha Harris McCoy, age 91, wife of Earl A. McCoy of 514 Lakeview Heights, Union, SC died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Systems.

Mrs. McCoy was born in Union, SC November 15, 1917, a daughter of the late Joseph Moody Harris and Julia Palmer Harris and was a member of McCutcheon Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are five children: Earline McCoy Stewart and husband Wayne of Union, Leland Bruce McCoy and wife Randi of Spartanburg, Dwight Steven McCoy and wife Sherry, Janice M Jackson Parks and husband Ron and Gerald Lee McCoy and wife Connie all of Union; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters: Madge Belue and Lucy Stone and husband Melvin all of Union and a sister-in-law, Ruby Harris of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 3, 2009 at McCutcheon Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Friday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Juanita Blackwell
Union, SC

Miss Juanita Blackwell, age 82, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg, SC.

Miss Blackwell was born in Jonesville, SC, February 3, 1926, a daughter of the late Alberry Blackwell and Lougenia Worthy Blackwell. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was previously employed with Union Hosiery Mill and Ace Sweater Company. Miss Blackwell was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two nieces: Doris Faucett and husband Fred and Vegia Gregory and husband Fred all of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Lawton Neely.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Juanita Blackwell Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 293, Union, SC 29379.

Ray R. Millwood, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. Ray R. Millwood, Jr., age 59, husband of Nancy McSwain Millwood of 100 3rd Avenue, Union, SC died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. Millwood was born in Union, SC, September 10, 1949, a son of the late Ray R. Millwood, Sr and Bessie Austin Millwood. He was employed with Mt. Vernon Mills in Spartanburg and attended Covenant Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Brian Millwood of Roebuck and Michael Millwood of Spartanburg; a sister, Patsy Boulware and husband Donnie of Buffalo; a brother, Jody Millwood and wife Patti of Union and a granddaughter, Brianna Millwood.

Funeral services will be held 3:00Pm Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Chuck Parrott.

Mr. Millwood will be taken to the home, 100 3rd Street, Union where the family will receive friends Saturday evening and will be placed in the church Sunday 2:00 PM to await the hour of service.

Mary H. Garner
Union, SC

Mrs. Mary Harvey Garner, age 90 of 105 South Evans Street, Union, SC, widow of Robert Thurston Garner died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Garner was born in Union, SC, June 27, 1918, a daughter of the late Reuben Gilliam Harvey and Ruth Keisler Harvey. She was a 1935 graduate of Union High School and immediately went to work as a secretary for Kirby Products. During this time she was also secretary for the Union County Fair. After Kirby’s closed in 1959, she worked as an accounting secretary for Sears Roebuck for thirty years. Upon retirement she went to work as a secretary for Excel Hosiery for approximately ten years. Mrs. Kirby was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church were she served as a Sunday School Teacher for seventy-four years and was also a member of the Widow’s Club and Keenagers. Mrs. Garner was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are five nieces: Marian H. Ayers and husband Don of Rock Hill, Rachel H. Vaughn of Pickens, Laura V. Farr and husband Ned of Union, Dolly V. Mahaffey of Spartanburg and Marilyn G. Butler of Florence; a nephew, Claude Douglas Harvey and wife Mary Sue of Thomasville, NC. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a brother, Claude E. Harvey and a sister-in-law, Floride Harvey.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 5, 2009 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Herbert Garrett, Jr. and Rev. Mike Moody. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Alan Harvey, Chuck Hood, Josh Ayers, Tim Ayers, Blake Vaughn, Rhett Vaughn and George Faucet. Members of the Homemakers Sunday School Class of Tabernacle Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

George W. Williford
US Marine

Mr. George Washington Williford, age 87, of 137 Phillips Road, Union, SC, widower of Essie Moore Williford, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Williford was born in Union, SC February 22, 1921, a son of the late Samuel Edward Williford and Sadie Hyder Williford. He retired from Milliken & Company-Monarch Plant after forty years of service and was formerly employed at Klaypat and the U.S. Forestry Service. Mr. Williford was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where he was a member of the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class and a former usher. Mr. Williford was one of the founders and first Fire Chief of Monarch Fire Department where he served as a Board Member. He was also a member of the Union County Rescue, a State Constable, and a Mason. Mr. Williford was a Veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Jane W. Wilson and husband Charles and Elizabeth Williford all of Union; a son-in-law, Harold D. Lane, Sr of Union; six grandchildren: Sherri Lane Franklin and husband Phillip, Dean Lane and wife Lisa, Elizabeth Phillips Lancaster and husband Blane, Samuel Phillips, Elizabeth Wilson Ireton and husband Mark and Charlie Wilson, III and wife Kasi and seven great-grandchildren: Lee Franklin and wife Heather, Kaci Franklin, Courtney Franklin, Ayden Lancaster, Daniel Ireton, Mitchel Lane and Shannon Lane. Mr. Williford was predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca Williford Lane, two grandsons: James Ashley Phillips and Charles W. Wilson, IV; two brothers: Paul Williford and Jesse Williford and three sisters: Nellie Walton, Dolly Bobo and Mary Moss.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, nephews Rev. Ralph Brown and Dr. Thomas Kelly and great-grandson, Mr. Lee Franklin. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Harold Dean Lane, Jr, Sam Phillips, Charles W. Wilson, III, Mark Ireton, Phillip Franklin and Blane Lancaster. Members of the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held in the church 1:00-1:45 PM Tuesday prior to the service.

Mrs. Lucille I. Chapman, age 64, formerly of Union, widow of Charles A. Chapman, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Mcleod Regional Hospital in Florence.

Mrs. Chapman was born in Chester County, March 22, 1944, a daughter of the late Albert James Smith, Sr. and Grace Smith. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are two daughters Melissa Taylor of Marion and Emily McWaters; four sisters Gladys Teay Smith, Peggy Jo Morrison, Helen Faye McCutchinson and Becky Darby all of Chester; two brothers James Smith and Billy Smith both of Chester; two grandchildren Jimmy Chassin Taylor of Anderson and Elizabeth Ann Taylor of Marion. Mrs. Chapman was pre-deceased by a sister Catherine Smith and two brothers Albert James Smith, Jr. and Donald Smith.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 PM at the church prior to the service.

Dorothy B. Brown
Union, SC

Mrs. Dorothy Bentley Brown, age 95, widow of Jesse Brown formerly of 301 South Second St., Lockhart died Sunday, January 4, 2009.

Mrs. Brown was born January 4, 1914 at Lockhart, SC., a daughter of the late Lon W. Bentley and Jessie Lee Sweatt Bentley. She was a life long member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church where she was a teacher assistant of Primary-Preschool-Bible School for 35 years.

Survivors are two sisters: Mrs. Clyde (Geneva) Kitchen of Adamsburg and Mrs. Robert (Mable) Reynolds of Union; a special caregiver and great-niece reared in her home; Janice "Sue" Harris of Lockhart; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brown was pre-deceased by one sister Marie Bentley Turner and four brothers: Oscar Sweatt, George Bentley, Alford Bentley and Russell Bentley.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brian Bishop. Interment will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Brown’s nephews: Akin Bentley, Dean Bentley, Scott Harris, Bobby Harris, Donnie Adams, Michael Clayton, Mark Bentley, Russ Bentley and Larry Bentley.

Mr. Thomas Eugene "Tuck" McCall, age 53, husband of Sharon Vinson McCall died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. McCall was born in Union, SC, October 29, 1955, a son of Thomas J. McCall and Jeanette Lawson McCall of Union. He was employed with the City of Union Utility Department and was of the Methodist Faith. Mr. McCall was a member of Union Masonic Lodge #75; an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Jennifer Ashley McCall of Spartanburg; a son, Josh Tabbot McCall; a stepson, Michael Lee Duncan and wife Brooke; a brother, Timothy A. McCall and wife Joanne all of Union; five grandchildren: Rabecka McCall, Evan McCall, Alexis Duncan, Ashely Duncan and Araina Duncan and a Pug grand-dog, "Louie".

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Terry Mitchell. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Mrs. Millie Luvene Eubanks Parks, age 90 of Union, widow of Bailey Monroe Parks died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Parks was born in Monarch Community, Union, SC, April 1, 1918, a daughter of the late Robert R. Eubanks and Ruth Brown Eubanks. She was a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Parks had formerly worked for Union Dry Cleaning and Steam Laundry and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Parks McCown and Husband Hugh of Easley; a son, Ken Parks and wife Pamela Wilson Parks of Lexington, SC; four grandchildren: Bill McCown of Florence, Katherine Mote and husband Donnie of Easley, Erica Parks and Chase Parks both of Lexington; three great-grandchildren: Austin, Landon and Connor Mote and a sister, Rena Eubanks Ammons. Mrs. Parks was predeceased by three sisters: Wilma Cunningham, Lunette Ferrell and Mae Frances "Butch" Clark and a brother, Robert Eubanks.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Friday, January 9, 2009 at the S.R Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Terry Mitchell. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Jean Rector Franklin, age 57, of 369 Vaughn Rd. Union, SC, died Sunday morning January 11, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.


Ms. Franklin was born in Union, May 3, 1951, a daughter of the late Charles Rector and Ila Mae Vaughn Rector.

Ms. Rector attended Jonesville High School and was formerly employed with Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.


Surviving are a son Charles “Jeff” Rector of Union, 2 sisters; Jo Anne Kelley of Union and Jamie Gilliland of Pacolet, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday January 14, 2009, at Gilead Baptist Church , Jonesville, SC, conducted by Dr. Lawton Neeley.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service.

Barbara Jean Poole, age 42, of 103 Fairmont St. Union, wife of Tommy Poole, died at her home on Saturday January 10, 2008.

Mrs. Poole was born in Union, December 4, 1966, a daughter of James W. Hollingsworth, Jr. of Whitmire and the late Rosella Henderson Bevis. Mrs Poole was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Tommy Poole, are 3 daughters; Heather Lawter of the home, Kayla Poole and Amber Poole of Buffalo, a son; Shane Vanderford , a sister; Leslie Nicole Smith, a brother ; Wesley Waldrop; a grandson; Gabriel Lawter and a granddaughter; Kyla Lawter all of Union. Mrs. Poole was predeceased by a sister; Angela Danny Hollingworth and 2 brothers; Roger Owenby and Kevin Owenby.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, January 14, 2008 at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon.

Mr. Robert Earl Morris, age 52, husband Teresa Suttles Morris of 6357 Greenfield Drive, Spartanburg, SC died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Mr. Morris was born in Augusta, Ga, July 24, 1956, a son of Louise Murphy Morris of Union and the late Robert B. Morris. He was a graduate of Union High School and Nashville Auto Diesel College, Nashville, TN. Mr. Morris was the owner and operator of Robert’s Auto and Diesel Services in Spartanburg and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Tara Morris Schuback and husband Chris of Woodruff; a son, Robert Earl Morris, Jr of the home; a brother, Randall Morris and wife Rebecca of Asheboro, NC; three grandsons: Austin, Stetson and Carter Schuback and a granddaughter Kendyll Morris.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 17, 2009 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Glenn Rusher and Dr. Russell Dean.

US Air Force Staff Sgt. Kenneth Jason Wilburn
Jonesville, SC

US Air Force Staff Sgt. Kenneth Jason Wilburn of Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Ga passed away unexpectedly at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX on Monday, January 12, 2009. Staff Sgt. Wilburn was born in Union, SC, July 28, 1978 and was a graduate of Union High School.

Sgt. Wilburn is survived by his wife, Rebecca, daughter Megan, expected daughter Ella and a dearly loved pet, Sascha all of Valdosta, Ga. Also surviving are his mother, Lisa Ivester Bell and step-father, Michael Bell; father, Wayne Wilburn; a brother, Tim Wilburn and wife Christie; nephews, Josh and Lee Wilburn; Grandparents, William R. And Elizabeth Ivester; an uncle, Mark Ivester and wife Vicki; ; nephew Dakota Ivester all of Union County; a special cousin, Shannon Nix, niece Madison and nephew Matthew of Kentucky; parents-in-law, Avril and Monte Johnson, special sister-in-law, Elizabeth Johnson all of England, UK and a great number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00-5:00 PM Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel. A Remembrance Ceremony will also be held at Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Ga and interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.

The family is at the home of his mother, Lisa and Mike Bell, 1028 S. Jonesville Highway, Jonesville, SC 29353 where they will receive friends immediately following the service.

Mrs. Cathy Sue "Susie" Hartley Inman, age 56, wife of Harvey F. "Butch" Inman of 1405 Peach Orchard Road, Union, SC died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Inman was born in Union, SC, February 11, 1951, a daughter of the late Elizabeth Mull Morris. She was a graduate of Union High School, manager of Burger King and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Harvey Wally Wallace Inman and finance Amy Bowser of the home, Chris Hicks of Union and Curtis Wix of Tennessee; two sisters: Tammy Eaves and husband Gerald of Lancaster and Judy Zatarain and husband Manual of Dade City, Fl; five brothers: Dennis Morris and Darlene of Hollywood, FL, Gary Morris and wife JoAnne of Lockhart, Tony Self of Spartanburg, Albert "Billy" Morris, Jr of Union and James Hartley of Lexington. Mrs. Inman was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Inman; a grandson, Braeden Andrew Albert Inman and a brother, Michael Ray Morris.

A Memorial Service will be held 6:00 PM Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Gerald Eaves.

Hervey H. Robinson
Green Cove Springs, Florida

Mr. Hervey H. Robinson, age 89 of Green Cove Springs, Florida, died Thursday, November 27, 2008. He was the widower of Dorothy Robinson.

A native of Union county, Mr. Robinson was born October 22, 1919, a son of the late Charlie D. and Vera Bishop Robinson. He was a 1937 graduate of Union High School and a 1941 graduate of Clemson College. A World War II Veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Robinson was a German prisoner of war for two years. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1969 as Lieutenant Colonel after twenty-eight years of service. Mr. Robinson moved to the Green Cove Springs area in 1952 from Burlington, NC and was former owner of Clay Building Supply from 1960-1975. He also worked as a teacher at Orange Park High School from 1975–1986. He had been a Mason for sixty years and was a member of the Cabul Lodge #116 F & AM in Green Cove Springs. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Green Cove Springs, he was actively involved in many phases of church work. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.

Mr. Robinson is survived by his children, Edward L. Robinson and wife Diane of Orlando, FL, Katherine Stevenson and husband John of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Nora E. Mrs. McMillan was born in Old Fort, N.C. September 1, 1930 a daughter of the late Alonzo Jordan and Annie Eller Jordan. Mrs. McMillan was a member of Buffalo Methodist Church and retired from Riley Sally Restaurant.

Survivors are a daughter; Tonya Hope McMillan, a son; Jeffrey Wayne McMillan both of Union; 3 sisters Bonnie Autrey, Sue Moore, Ruby Davis and husband Charles all of Old Fort, N.C. 4 brothers; Raymond Jordan and wife Sandra of Candler, N.C., Homer Jordan and wife Gladys of Spruce Pine, N.C., James Jordan of Morganton, N.C., and Arthur Jordan and wife Dianne of Union; 3 brothers-in-law; Jerry Mcmillan and wife Pat of Whitmire, Doc Mcmillan and wife Tina of Greenwood, Shugg McMillan wife Boot of Buffalo; a special friend; Gwen Ivey of Union. Mrs. McMillan was predeceased by a brother; John Stanley Jordan; 2 sisters; Francis J. Lowe and Winnie Jordan.

Mrs. Sybil Warren Holcombe, age 72 of Kelly Road, Union, SC passed away peacefully Friday, January 16, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mrs. Holcombe was born in Lockhart, SC, September 29, 1936, a daughter of the late Grier "Slim" and Lelia Carver Warren. A proud graduate of Lockahrt High School, she was a member of the Ladies Basketball Team and has always remained a fan of the school and the game. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Mrs. Holcombe was predeceased by her husband of forty-two years, August F. Holcombe with whom she worked along with his family in the daily operations of Holcombe Funeral Home. For many years, Mrs. Holcombe shared in the opportunity to help families through her care, support and compassion in their difficult times. A loving mother and grandmother, she has always been a major part in the lives of her daughters and their families.

Mrs. Holcombe is survived by two daughters, Audrea Holcombe Douglass and husband Chuck and Sammie Holcombe Haire and husband Billy; six grandchildren: Stephen Kurtz and wife Beverly, Ashley K. Owens and husband Jason, Justin Kurtz and wife Brandy, Dillon Haire, Claire Douglass and Natalie Haire; four great-grandchildren: Daniel Kurtz, Elijah Owens, Lillianna Kurtz and Aeden Owens all of Union; three sisters: Doris W. Whitlock of Summerville, Carol W. Mitchell of Union and Betty W. Parr of Conway and a brother, Donald M."Judo" Warren of Union and several loving nieces, nephews and long time friends.

Mrs. Waldrop was born in Union, SC, August 16, 1966, a daughter of Jackie Kitchens of Statesville, NC and the late Delitha Austin. She was formerly employed with Reeves Brothers in Woodruff.

Mrs. Paul Ruth Stribble Whitener, age 89 , wife of Rev. William Shepherd Whitener died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Whitener was born in Newberry, SC April 19, 1919 a daughter of the late Paul Washington Stribble and Martha Lavenia Bundrick Stribble. She was a graduate of Newberry High School and Beauty School of Spartanburg, Mrs. Whitener was retired owner and operator of the Beauty Nook which she opened in 1947. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women Club of Union, a former member and President of the Busy Bee Garden Club.

Mrs. Whitener was a dedicated Christian and lay leader, having been a member, Sunday School Teacher and office holder at Green Street United Methodist Church, now, Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. She was a certified lay speaker, having completed the required course of study at Wofford College. Mrs. Whitener was inspirational and served in numerous capacities in the founding of Covenant Baptist Church. She and her husband , Rev. Shep Whitener, led this church from its humble beginnings and through many building stages. Following their retirement from Covenant, they were members of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and circle member. After their health declined, the Whiteners returned to Covenant Baptist Church as members and inspirational leaders.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Robert Shepherd and wife Deborah Whitener of Charlotte; a sister, Marie Longshore of Kinards, SC; five grandsons: William Allen Whitener, Thomas Eric Whitener both of Union, David Shepherd Whitener of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Hames Whitener of Manila, Phillippines and Paul Thomas Whitener of Ocracoke, NC; a great-granddaughter, Kristin Caroline Whitener of Union; a daughter-in-law, Andrea Allen Whitener of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whitener was predeceased by a son, Paul William Whitener, four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Charles Parrott. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Harold Dean "Dirt Dobber" Palmer, Sr., age 73, husband of Joyce Trammell Palmer of 415 C Street, Jonesville, SC died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, Spartanburg, SC.

Mr. Palmer was born in Union County, SC October 27, 1935, a son of the late Sidney M. Palmer and Inez Childers Palmer. He retired from Milliken & Co- Monarch Mill after twenty-five years of service and also was employed for fifteen years with Milliken & Co-Cedar Hill Plant. Mr. Palmer was a "proud" retiree of South Carolina National Guards-Jonesville Unit after forty years of service and was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mr. Palmer also enjoyed traveling and working on lawn mowers and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-five years are four sons: Gene Palmer, Dean Palmer and wife Annette all of Jonesville, Ronnie Palmer and wife Janice of Pacolet and Donnie Palmer of Jonesville; a sister, Margaret P. Scarborough of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Kelly Harris and husband Brent of Cowpens, Jason Palmer and wife Ashley of Greer, Nikki Palmer of Rock Hill, Brooks Palmer of Jonesville and Trey Palmer; five great-grandchildren: Bradley Harris, Chase Palmer, Landen Palmer, Wesley Palmer and Kendrah Rhoden.

Mrs. Trammell was born in Union, SC , August 30, 1945, a daughter of the late Ernest Eugene Whitehead, Sr and Mason Louise Greer Whitehead. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. Mrs. Trammell was predeceased by a grandson and five brothers.

Surviving are: two daughters, Melody Trammell and Melissa Trammell both of Union; two sons: Thomas "Gobber" Trammell, Jr and wife Kasey and Dennis "Bunt" Trammell and wife Jami all of Union; two brothers: Paul Jerry Whitehead, Sr and wife Judy and Howard D. Mrs. Akers was born in Johnson Co., NC, January 6, 1920 a daughter of the late J. Edgar and Hattie Allen. She and her husband were long time residents of Union Co. and members of the Union Church of Christ. Mrs. Akers enjoyed excellent health and died of advanced age.

Surviving are one daughter: Brenda Evan of Gaffney; three grandchildren: Coley Evens, Daniel Evans and Linda Goins; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thornton was born in Chester, January 14, 1945 a daughter of the late J.T. and Grace Barefoot Threatte. She was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College. Mrs. Thornton was formerly employed with Spartan Mills, Rosemont Plant in Jonesville and was a member of West Springs Baptist Church. She was a member of the Colen West Circle , the Pastor’s Sunday School class and also served on the Library Committee of West Spring Baptist.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Kathy T. Berry and husband Steve of Union and Gaye T. Henry of Ringgold, GA; two sons: Ricky Thornton and wife Emelie of Union and Jeff Thornton of Scottsdale, AZ; three sisters: Reba Nelson of Simpsonville, Sybil Klaeui of Powdersville, and Martha Rogers of Myrtle Beach; one brother: Larry Threatte of Greenville; 5 grandchildren: Willa Hucks, Lee Thornton, Lt. Mrs. Maness was born in Haywood Co., NC, April 10, 1914, a daughter of the late James Henry Justice and Allie Wines Justice. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Plant in Jonesville and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Maness was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Fannie Bell M. Bright and husband Albert, and Christine M. Lambert widow of Bill Lambert all of Union; two sons: James W. Maness widower of Pat Maness of Union and Charles R. Maness and wife Frances of Myrtle Beach; and 5 generations of numerous grandchildren. Mrs. Maness was predeceased by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Revels was born in Lockhart, March 17, 1923 a daughter of the late Pete and Jennie Candler Vanderford. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Owens was born in Union, SC, May 18, 1923, a daughter of the late Ben Austin and Sadie Austin Austin. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Exel Hosiery Mill. Mrs. Owens was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son, David "Tubo" Owens and friend, Joyce Greene of Union; special grandchildren: Jackie Rector and Terry Greene; special great-grandchildren: Trey Greene and Katylyn Greene and a number of close friends and neighbors. Mrs. Owens was predeceased by a daughter, Marjorie Gregory.

Mr. Vinson was born in Buffalo, SC June 10, 1928, a son of the late Benjamin F. Vinson and Lillian Justice Vinson. He was a retired construction worker; a Veteran of the US Navy and was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Tammy Haney and husband Stanley; a sister, Mable Brock and husband Donald all of Buffalo; two brothers: Jack Vinson and wife Alberta of Williston, SC and Paul Vinson and wife Faye of Lincoln, CA; two grandchildren: Amanda Bobo and Kevin Haney; a great-grandson, R.J. Bobo; a number of nieces and nephews and a beloved pet and companion, "Spanky". Mr. Vinson was predeceased by two brothers, Jesse Vinson and Robert Vinson.

Mrs. Haney was born in Blackwater, Virginia June 20, 1912, a daughter of the late Floyd Burton Bledsoe, Sr and Caressa Robinette Bledsoe. She retired from Milliken & Co - Monarch Plant after forty-three years of service and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are three daughters: Marguerite Swanson of Buffalo, Doris Dover and finance Harry Burgess of Union and Diane Panther and husband Joe of Laurens; two sons: Dean Haney of Buffalo and Larry Haney and wife Virginia of Monarch; a sister, Margaret Hogan of Rockingham, NC; twenty-three grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Haney was predeceased by four sons and two daughters.

Mr. Freddie Eugene "Rudie Pottie" Brown, age 52 of 508 Hart Street, Union, SC died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Heathcare System from injuries received in a roofing accident.

Mr. Brown was born in Union, SC, July 1, 1956, a son of the late James C. Brown and Virginia Howell Brown. He worked alongside his brothers at Brown’s Roofing and was a member of Elks Lodge #1321 of Union. Mr. Brown was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a fiancee, Bertha Cash of the home; three daughters: Ashley Brown Boulware, Amy Elizabeth Brown and Erica Harley Brown; two sons: Jamie Eugene Brown and financee, Whitney Groves and Benji Nix and wife Coleen; two sisters: Elaine Brown Horne and financee Stewart Black and Teresa Brown Humphries; four brothers: Clifford Brown and wife Betty, Dean Brown and wife Linda, Jerry Brown and wife Sherry and Billy Brown and wife Becky all of Union; five grandchildren: Kasidy Ann Rhinehart, Nathan Blake Brown, Lucas Allen Haney, Chelsey Nix and Autumn Nix and a special friend, Dennis Davis of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Larry Padgett. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Davis, Danny Cavander, L.J. Chaney, Billy Brown, Jr., Jamie Johnson, Eddie Harris, Joe Smith and Butch Benton. Members of Union Elks Lodge are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Brown will be carried to the home, 508 Hart Street Union where the family will receive friends after 4:00 PM Saturday. Mr. Brown will be placed in the church 1:00 PM Sunday, to await the hour of service.

Shirley Rose Pearson

Mrs. Shirley Rose Williams Pearson, age 73 of 617 Bailey Rd., Union, SC, widow of Franklin Pearson died Friday, January 30, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Pearson was born in Union County, SC, February 27, 1935, a daughter of the late John Baxter Williams and Mary Inez Murphy Williams. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters: Wanda Strugill of Union and Cynthia Crocker and husband Ernest of Buffalo with whom she made her home; a step-son, Michael Pearson of Union; two sisters: Frances Green of Union and Ruby Eubanks of Spartanburg; two brothers: Rev. Boyd Williams of Union and Larry Williams of Buffalo; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pearson was predeceased by three sisters: Christine McNeace, Ruth McNeace and Mary Nell Black and a brother, Donald Williams.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, February 1, 2009 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shep Bevis and Rev. Steve Berry. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Williams, Michael Crocker, Brian Gardin, Kevin Williams, Dennis Teague and Francis Ramsey. The Nurses and C.N.A.’s of C-Wing Unit of Oakmont Nursing Home are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 2:00-3:30 PM Sunday in the church prior to the service.

Juanita Lorene Padgett
Union, SC

Mrs. Juanita Lorene Wall Padgett, age 83 of 209 Mill Street, Union, SC, widow of Billy Padgett died Friday, January 30, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Padgett was born in Tillman, OK, February 15, 1925, a daughter of the late Cora Ethel Wilson Cole and step-father, Arthur Moeller. Mrs. Padgett retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC. Mrs. Padgett was first married to the late Dewey Wall.

Surviving are a daughter, Carroll W. Robinson and husband Donald "Snake" of Monarch; three sons: Roger Lynn Wall of Clover, Donnie Wall and wife Annette of Pauline and Michael Everette of Woodruff; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Padgett was predeceased by a grandson, Travis Wall and a great-grandchild, Brandi Nicole Nelson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 2, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Benny Green.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the graveside.

Peggy Kirby Wilson
Columbia, SC

Mrs. Peggy Kirby Wilson, age 78, of Lowman Home, Columbia, SC died Friday, January 30, 2009 at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Mrs Wilson was born in Greensboro, NC, January 7, 1931, a daughter of the late James Lee Kirby and Josephine Walden Kirby. She was retired from Milliken & Company - Monarch Plant after forty-eight years of service and was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. Mrs. Wilson was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Glenn of Irmo; a son, Lynn Wilson of Seneca, SC; a brother, Everette Kirby of Mauldin; five grandchildren: Jennifer Strom, Amy Lea, Ashlyn Glenn, Hayden Wilson and Sarah Beth Wilson; a great-great-grandchild, Anna Louise Strom and a great-great-grandson on the way.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Hayden Wilson, Jerry Kirby, Glenn Kirby, Mike Wilson, Sammy Wilson, Ricky Wilson, Donnie Crawford and Frank Bobo, Jr.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeal Home.
