Frank G. Burnett

Mr. Franklin Gene Burnett, age 66 of 227 Haywood St., Buffalo, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Burnett was born in Union, August 30, 1942, a son of the late Frank "Bunt" Burnett and Dolly Blanton Burnett. He was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and had received an Associates degree from Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Burnett was a combat veteran having served during Viet Nam and retired as Sgt. First Class from the U.S. Army. He enjoyed daily walks and visits with the many friends he made at Veteran’s Park.

Surviving are two daughters: Jeanne Willard and husband Jerry of Union and Debbie Love of Biloxi, MS; one son: Frank Burnett and wife Christie of Whitmire; two sisters: Brenda Hawkins and Patricia Jennings both of Union; 5 grandchildren: Bailey Willard, Andrew Willard, Caleb Willard, Kaylee Burrill, and Nicholas Burrill; two special nephews: Ricky O’Shields and Darrell O’Shields both of Union and several other nieces and nephews. Mr. Burnett was predeceased by a brother: Johnny Burnett.

Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. John Lee.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Michael Hendrix Roberts, Sr.
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Michael Hendrix Roberts, Sr., age 64, husband of Sandra Fowler Roberts of 254 Farrow Rd., Jonesville, SC died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Roberts was born in Mullins, SC, February 2, 1945, a son of the late Erastus Hendrix Roberts and Cora Gathings Roberts. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Roberts retired as Vice President of First Citizens Bank, Spartanburg, SC and had managed credit offices in Spartanburg. He recently retired as owner and operator of Muddy Water Trucking and was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mike was an avid racing fan, enjoyed sports, hunting and fishing with his brother, Pat at Lake Murray. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-five years are three sons: Mike Roberts of Jonesville, Stephen Roberts and wife Amy of Boiling Springs and Zane Roberts of the home; grandchildren: Caleb Roberts of Jonesville, Kegan Roberts of the home, Courtney Roberts Chesnut of Buffalo, Webber Gathings Roberts of Boiling Springs and Cole Roberts of Union; great grandchildren: Kylie Roberts and Hallie Gregory both of Union; two sisters, Jerri Sanders of Jonesville and Brenda Funk of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother, Pat Roberts and wife Elaine of Lake Murray and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

Active pallbearers will be Smitty Smith, Russell Vinson, Cam Robinson, Matt Addis, Jake Mayes and Bruce Fowler. Honorary pallbearers will be Snake Robinson, Paul Fowler, Henry Evans, Jody Waddell and Pat Buice.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Richard "Rick" Callahan
Union, SC

Mr. Richard Lynn "Rick" Callahan, age 50 of 110 Teal Road, Union, SC died Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Callahan was born in Union, SC March 3, 1959, a son of Gaynelle Hooper Callahan Wade of the home and the late J.D. Callahan. He had attended Union High School; previously worked with his father at Callahan Asphalt for twenty years and had worked for the past two years with the Department of Transportation in Union. Mr. Callahan was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Allison Brooke Callahan of Union; a son, Richie Callahan of Jonesville; a step father, Thomas Wade of Union; a sister, Luanne C. Thompson; a brother, Mike Callahan and wife Sherrie and a grandson, Jacob Meadows all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2009 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mikey Callahan, Anthony Henderson, Tommy Rector, Jackie Allison, Joey Alison, Cyle Coker, Roger Wade and Walter McKeown. The employees of the Department of Transportation in Union are asked to sit in a group.

Billy Rice

Mr. William Harold "Billy" Rice, age 54, husband of Lori Sanders Rice of 1021 Thompson Blvd., Union, SC died suddenly at his home on Thursday, March 5, 2009.

Mr. Rice was born in Mannheim, Germany, January 3, 1955, a son of James "Jim" McDowell Rice of Union and the late Renate Nicklaus Rice. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a maintenance manager for AMBAC International in Columbia. Mr. Rice was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are a daughter: Lacie Rice Yarbrough and her husband Justin; a very, very, special grandson: Wyatt Blake Yarbrough all of Union; four sisters: Anita Rice of Columbia, Susan Rice Barnes and her husband Mark and their daughter, Lauren Barnes all of Florence, Elsie Rice Decker and her husband Brett and their children, Jenna Malpass Vaughan and Jamie Malpass, Connie Rice Vinson and her husband Ray; mother-in-law: Norma Dean Sanders; brothers-in-law: Timmy Dean Sanders and his wife Rita and their daughters, Nikki and Cassie Sanders, Monty Sanders and his daughters, Kirsty and Autumn Sanders all of Union.

Memorial Services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, March 7, 2009 at S.R Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carroll Caldwell.

Visitation will be held 2:00- 4:00 PM Saturday in the chapel prior to the service.

Virginia McDaniel Haney
Buffalo, SC

Mrs. Virginia McDaniel Haney, age 68, wife of Jackie Haney, of 905 Linersville Rd. Buffalo, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday March 7, 2009, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

Mrs. Haney was born in Union on July 31, 1940, the daughter of the late George McDaniel and Frances Ammons McDaniel Begley. She had previously worked in the Personnel Department of United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and presently was a carrier for the Union Daily Times. Mrs. Haney was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1958 and was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, is a grandson, Scott Moore of Buffalo. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa H. Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM, Wednesday March 11, 2009 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Hugh Sanders, Jimmy Maness, Mike Johnson, Ned Owings, Lynn Phillips and Felston Ridings. Employees of the Union Daily Times are asked to sit in a group.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Barbara Etta Brock West

Mrs. Barbara Etta Brock West age 72, of 247 Putman Rd. Buffalo, wife of Elbert West, died Saturday March 7, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. West was born March 3, 1937 a daughter of the late Robert Brock and Jennie V. Ford Brock Byrd. She was a lifelong member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mary Lee Judy and husband James "Pete" of the home, 2 sons; Robert West of Union and Harold West of Buffalo, a special niece reared in the home, Terrie Elaine Filer and husband Gary of Forest City, NC, a brother, John A. Brock and wife Ollie Mae of Buffalo, a sister- in- law, Nellie Brock of Columbia, SC, a special brother- in- law, Oscar Dawkins, a special niece, Janet Krpata, both of Union, 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and special friends, the Wade Howell Family. Mrs. West was predeceased by a brother, Charles W. Brock.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 PM Monday March 9, 2009 at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev Robert Branch.

The family received friends from 7:00 until 9:00 Sunday evening March 8, 2009 at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jennifer Prescott Trammell Satterfield, age 32 of 109 Trammell Dr., Union, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Satterfield was born March 30, 1976 a daughter of Debbie Satterfield of Spartanburg and William Prescott of New Hampshire. She was a very loving and caring person to her family and all who knew her.

Surviving are a son: Jerry D. "Jay" Trammell, III of the home; two step-daughters: Jennie Ashley Trammell of Union and Ashley Satterfield of Spartanburg; a step-son: Brandon Satterfield of Spartanburg; one sister: Christine Prescott Kelly and one brother: Billy Prescott both of Spartanburg; a grandson: Xavier Lee Barrett of Union.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 13, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery, Union, SC.

Mrs. Jerry Farner, age 81, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at her home in Woodlawn Manor Apartments in Union, SC..

Mrs. Farner was born in Union, September 09, 1927, a daughter of the late Clarence and Margaret Lowery Edwards. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a past member of First Baptist Church. In recent years, Mrs. Farner attended Sardis United Methodist Church where she had been very active.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter: Terry Farner and wife Kay of St. Petersburg, FL, Robin Farner and wife Kay of Fayetteville, GA and Lori Farner Dykes and husband Danny of Douglasville, GA; three grandchildren: Ryan and Kevin Farner of St. Petersburg, FL and April Farner Hawkinson of Atlanta, GA.; one brother: Jack Edwards of PA. Mrs Farner was married to the late W T (Bill) Farner of Union, SC, and had previously lived in Marion, SC and Swainsboro, GA.

Graveside services will be held 11:30 AM Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Cribb. The family will receive friends 10:00 until 11:00 AM Saturday morning at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Arlen Braxton "Blue Eyes" Meadows, age 69, husband of Ruby Lee Adams Meadows of 1106 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, SC died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Meadows was born in Buffalo, SC, January 8, 1940, a son of the late Dolman Meadows and Louise Garner Meadows. He was formerly employed in textiles and was previously employed as a cross country truck driver. Mr. Meadows enjoyed C.B. Radio Communications and C.B. Club Membership.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Joey Meadows; a daughter, Lori Harrison and husband Tommy all of Union; a step-daughter, Sandra Howell and husband Mike of Spartanburg; three sisters: Sue Jones of St. Augustine, FL, Nell Henderson of Blairs, VA and Nancy Culberson of Buffalo; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Mr. Meadows was predeceased by a son, Ritchie Meadows; a brother, Alvin Meadows and a step-daughter, Marilyn Matthews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Alan West.

Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Ronald "Ron" Earl Johnson, II, age 17 of 232 Mudbridge Rd., Buffalo, SC died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at his home.

Ron was born in Union, SC, March 14, 1991 and was a student at Excelsior Middle School.

Surviving are his mother, Sandy Lipsey Johnson and her fiancee Lance Delaney of the home and his father Ronald Earl Johnson of Woodruff; a brother, Cody Allen Johnson of the home; maternal grandparents, Carrol and Mary Upton of Buffalo; paternal grandmother, Juanita Johnson of Union; maternal great-grandparents, James and Ruby Upton of Pacolet; aunts and uncles: Jason Lipsey and wife Christy, Angie Boulware, Dennis Johnson all of Buffalo, Harold Johnson and Michael Johnson both of Spartanburg and numerous cousins. Ron was predeceased by paternal grandfather, Ray Johnson and maternal great-grandparents, Harold and Millie Carter.

Mr. Jerry Charles "Niki" Atkinson, age 67 of 1300 S. Pinckney St., Union, died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Atkinson was born in Union, Jan. 17, 2009 a son of the late Herbert "Red" and Bertha Eaves Atkinson. He was formerly employed with Flora Daniels Construction Co.

Surviving are two daughters: Angela Eubanks and Kim Knighten both of Union; two sons: Todd Atkinson and wife Lisa of Conn. and Scott Atkinson of Pendleton; two sisters: Shirley Atkinson of Pensacola, FL and Frances Bunch of Summerville; two sisters-in-law: Betty Atkinson and Marie Atkinson both of Union; one brother-in-law: Jack Hogan of Anderson; 8 grandchildren: Jared Atkinson, Amanda Atkinson, Matthew Atkinson, Randall Eubanks, Brandon Eubanks, Heather Knighten, Brandi Knighten and Jessica Black. Mr. Atkinson was predeceased by a sister: Edna Hogan and two brothers: Donald Atkinson and Earl Atkinson.

Paul A. Caldwell
Union, S.C.

Mr. Paul A. Caldwell, age 88, went home, Friday, March 13, 2009, to join those he loved who had gone before him to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 69 years, Grace Sumner Caldwell who preceded him in death in 2007. Mr. Caldwell was born in Spartanburg, January 26, 2009 a son of the late Burnett E. Caldwell and Stella Parham Caldwell Cole. He retired from Torrington Co. and coached Little League baseball. Mr. Caldwell was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Crestview Baptist Church. He was a beloved son and "big brother" to his siblings and a hard working father who was very much a part of his children’s lives and was always willing to help however he could. As a grandfather he was a blessing to all his grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters: Frances Davis and husband Charles, Vickie Henderson and husband Ronnie all of Union; three sons: James C. Caldwell and wife Brenda , Larry Caldwell and wife Nancy all of Jonesville and Charlie Caldwell and wife Stephanie of Union; two sisters: Peggy Coynn and Grace Rose both of Columbus, OH; two brothers: Olin D. Cole of Columbus, OH and Maynard Cole of Roebuck; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. Mr. Caldwell was predeceased by a son, Billy Dean Caldwell.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, March 16, 2009 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be great-grandsons: Justin Caldwell, Jeremy Ivey, Brent Shetley, Nicholas Shetley, Jordan Ivey and Jonnah Ivey.

Fred S. Gregory

Fred S. Gregory, age 88,widower of Elizabeth Rhinehart Gregory, formerly of Buffalo, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mr. Gregory was born January 1, 1921, in Union County, a son of the late Berry William Gregory and Ellen Sumner Gregory . He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, retired from United Merchants – Buffalo Plant. Mr. Gregory was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Barnett and her husband, Kenneth, of Greenwood, and a grandson, Zachary Michael Barnett, of Knoxville, TN. He was predeceased by two sisters: Agatha Burgess and Mable Byars; and three brothers: Alvin Gregory, Franklin Gregory and Carlton Gregory.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Steve Lemons and Rev. Jimmy Tucker.

The family will receive friends immediately following to service at the graveside.

Mr. Larry Wayne "King Snake" Keasler, Sr., age 53 of 203 C St. Jonesville, died Sunday March 15, 2009 at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Keasler was born in Union Co., August 13, 1955 a son of Gladys Austin Henderson of Union and the late Luther Alfred Keasler. He was a graduate of Union High School and formerly employed with GSP in Spartanburg. Mr. Keasler was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are his fiancee’: Janet Bogan of the home; two daughters: Denise "Bit" Howell and Marie "Sissy" Cipriano both of Union; one son: Larry Wayne Keasler, Jr. of Travelers Rest; two god-daughters: Heather Keisler of Union and Tina Bradburn of Jonesville; one sister: Cathy Keasler of FL; five brothers: Ricky Keasler, Sr., Harold Dean Keasler, Dennis Keisler and Devon Henderson all of Union and Dennis Henderson of Columbia; seven granddaughters: Audrey and Lea Howell, Destiny and Denise Cipriano, Kacie and Lacie Dawkins, and Sophi Keisler; one grandson: C.J. Keisler; a number of nieces, nephews and special friends and three loveable pets: "Baby", "Boo" and "Pedee".

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Keisler, Scott Bogan, Mike Cooper, Jason Bradburn, Wayne Paige and Calvin Dimsdale.

Mrs. Connie McAbee Carter, age 70 of 144 Peakeville Rd., Buffalo, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Wallace Thompson Hospital.

Mrs. Carter was born in Union, September 11, 1938 a daughter of the late Ezekiel and Eva Lee McAbee. She was formerly married to Albert Carter of Jonesville. Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Research in Spartanburg. She was also a former beautician and attended New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: LaRhonda Moss of Spartanburg and Linda Hull of the home; one son: Vance Carter and wife Maria of Spartanburg; two sisters:Betty Blackley of GA and Frances Giddens of Union; two brothers: Marion McAbee and Freddie McAbee both of Union; 7 grandchildren: Gina Eubanks, Michael Boulware, Miranda Deal, Chris Godfrey, Ricki Escalante; Tony Gregory and William Carter; 6 great-grandchildren: Baylie, Zakary, Jacob, Sophie, Bryson, and Maleigha. Mrs. Carter was predeceased by a brother: James McAbee and a grandson: C.J. Escalante.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 until 2:00 PM Thursday prior to the service at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mrs. Ann Gallman "Tootie" Wiggins of 501 Blassingame St., Union, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Wiggins was born in Union, a daughter of the late Manard Dean and Lillie Mae Coleman Gallman. She was formerly employed with Greenleaf and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter: Stacie Sorrow and husband Andy of Buffalo; one son: Chris Wiggins and wife Jennifer of Jonesville; a brother: Jim Gallman of Union; her life long friend: Belinda Jett of Union; four grandchildren: Teil Sorrow, Christopher Wiggins, Ellie Wiggins and Amanda Sorrow. Mrs. Wiggins was predeceased by a brother: Dean Edward Gallman, Sr. and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Blanche Gossett White, age 82 widow of Leroy White, Sr. of 629 Rice Ave. Ext. Apt. 2-A Union, died Wednesday March 18, 2009 at her home after a long illness.

Mrs. White was born in Union, April 24, 1926, a daughter of the late John Reid Gossett and Lillie Bell Lavendar Gossett. She was retired from Monsanto Electronics in Moore and was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. Mrs. White was of member of the Mary Lybrand Sunday school class.

Surviving are a daughter: Brenda White Foster and husband Allen of Union; a brother: Donald W. Gossett of Union; five grandchildren: Gwen Ivey and husband Ronnie, Allen Foster, Jr, Rodney White and wife Sherry, Wanda Carter and husband Eddie, Margaret Ann Perlich and husband Dominick; 10 great-grandchildren: Candi, Whitney, Dusty, Brittany, R.J., Paige, Brooke, Phillip, Kevin and Dusty and 1 great-great grandchild: Aliyah. Mrs. White was predeceased by a son, Leroy White, Jr.

Judge David Norman Wilburn
Union, S.C.

The Honorable David Norman Wilburn, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather died peacefully Thursday morning, March 19, 2009, at Wallace Thomson Hospital following a brief illness.

Judge Wilburn was born in Union, SC., July 15, 1929, the son of the late David Norman and Elizabeth Askew Wilburn. He was a graduate of Union High School, Furman University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Captain and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, where he served as Senior Warden and Lay Reader.

Judge Wilburn practiced law in Union for many years, until his election by the South Carolina General Assembly to the court system. He served as the family court Judge for South Carolina’s 16th Judicial Circuit which encompasses Union and York Counties. Following his retirement, "Sonny," as he was known to his friends and family, served his community not only through his church, but also as a member of the Board of the Salvation Army and actively participated in Meals on Wheels as a driver, fund raiser and advocate. Sonny and his wife Lou were avid golfers and gave their talents, support and leadership abilities to keep the Union Country Club viable as long as possible.

Judge Wilburn is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Mary Lou Ellis Wilburn of the home, 218 Glendale Road, Union; two sons: David Norman Wilburn, III and wife Teresa of Moore, and Timothy Ellis Wilburn and wife Susan of Floral City, FL.; one daughter: Lynn Wilburn Franken of Florence, SC.; one sister: Mary Elizabeth Wilburn Hooker of Richmond, VA.; one brother-in-law: the Rev. Dr. E. Earle Ellis of Fort Worth, TX. six grandchildren: John David Franken, Lindsey Franken, Chris Cranford, Timothy Wilburn, Kirby Wilburn and David Wilburn, IV; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity conducted by Father Robert H. Long. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery.

Mr. Joe Montgomery, age 80, widower of Gladys Reardon Montgomery of 780 Phillippi Church Road, Union died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Montgomery was born in York County September 24, 1928, a son of the late Robert E. Montgomery and Ida Mae Howe Montgomery. He was a graduate of Union High School and worked for Dorchers Red and White grocery store in Charleston, SC. Mr. Montgomery was a member of Phillippi Baptist Church.

Survivors are a sister: Bette Stone of Abbeville, SC. and a brother: Harold Montgomery and wife Terrie of Union. Mr. Montgomery was predeceased by a brother: Robert Fred Montgomery.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 23, 2009 at Phillippi Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale.

Miss Virginia Adair Farr, age 92, of Oakmont Nursing Home, died March 22, 2009.

Miss Farr was born in the Kelton Community, April 26, 1916 a daughter of the late Richard Farr and Ethel Inman Farr. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church and was retired from the Cato Corporation in Charlotte, NC.

Survivors are a sister: Grace Lown of Lexington and numerous nieces and nephews. Miss Farr was predeceased by two sisters: Norma F. Alman and Gussie Mae Comer; and one brother: Archie Farr.

Mrs. Betty Zimmerman Braxton, age 79 of 108 Flat Alley, Buffalo, SC, widow of L.A. Braxton, Jr. died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at her home after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Braxton was born in Buffalo, SC April 10, 1929, a daughter of the late James P. Zimmerman and Essie Mae Zimmerman. She was retired from Her Majesty and was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Cathy Dean of Texas and Dianne Brooks of the home; a son, James A. Braxton of Irmo; a sister, Lillian Holcombe of Buffalo; a brother, Ralph Zimmerman of LA.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Thad Scott Strange, age 94 of Oakmont Assisted Living, Union, SC, widow of Sadie Sanders Strange, died Saturday, March 21, 2009.

Mr. Strange was born in Union County, SC July 30, 1914, a son of the late Thadeus Barlow Strange and Lillian V. Goforth Strange. He was a graduate of Union High School and a 1935 graduate of Clemson University. Mr. Strange had served as a County Extension Agent prior to World War II. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the infantry during World War II. and later joined the US Army Air Corps which became the United States Air Force. Mr. Strange retired as an officer from the Air Force. Following retirement, Mr. Strange taught at the high school and community college level. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church; the Union Rotary Club and the Union County Historical Society.

Surviving are two sons: Thad Scott Strange, Jr and wife Pat of Sierra Vista, Arizona and George S. Strange of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, March 26, 2009 at S.R Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. CY Rogers. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Asbury C. "AC" McKinney, age 88, husband of Barbara Willard LeMaster McKinney of 620 S. Main Street, Jonesville, SC died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. McKinney was born in Jonesville, SC October 7, 1920, a son of the late Clyde McKinney and Gladys Farmer McKinney. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he was a member of the Fairview Men’s Sunday School Class and a dedicated member of the choir. Mr. McKinney was a former Magistrate of Jonesville and was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II. He first married to the late Katie Ruth McKinney.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-daughter, Rhonda L. Hudson and husband Arvie; two step-sons: Larry E. LeMaster and wife Rhonda and Jamie LeMaster all of Union; a brother, Clyde E. "Huck" McKinney and wife Anna of Roebuck; three granddaughters: Tami Black and husband Ken, Amy Kingsmore and husband David and Jill Nichols and husband Skee all of Union; four great-grandchildren; a number of step-grandchildren; two loving nephews: Ricky McKinney and wife Jeannine of Jonesville and Billy McKinney and wife Hazel of Union and a special daughter, Rebecca Reasoner of Union. Mr. McKinney was predeceased by a daughter, Jean M. Lawson; a son, Richard Lee McKinney and a brother, Wallace McKinney.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Lewis. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Crocker Creasman, age 100 of 104 Bermuda Drive, Union, SC, widow of H.D. Creasman, beloved mother and grandmother, went to be with her Lord, Thursday, March 26, 2009.

Mrs. Creasman was born in Union, SC, October 20, 1908, a daughter of the late William A. and Mattie Pearl Crocker. She was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church where she had formerly served as church treasurer and a member of the Ladies Bible Class. Mrs. Creasman retired from United Merchants in Union. She was predeceased by a son, Donald Creasman and was loved by all who met her.

Surviving are two daughters: Pearl (Judson) Gregory and Ruby White; grandchildren: Terry (Alice) Gregory, Jean (Robert) Capps, Sherry (Fred) Davis, Mike White, Bobby (Cindy) Knox, Teresa Bollinger and Mary Frances Creasman; a number of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret Morris of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 28, 2009 at McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Rebun Wallace and Rev. Jerry McKee.

Donald Eugene Estes, Jr.

Mr. Donald Eugene “Donnie” Estes, Jr, age 33 of 405 Prospect Corners Rd., Sedalia Community, Union, SC died Thursday morning, March 26, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Donnie was born in Union, SC, September 28, 1975, a son of Donald Eugene Estes, Sr and Annie Ruth Duncan Estes of 414 Prospect Corners, Union. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1993 and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Currently, Donnie was enrolled in The Bible Institute of Gaffney where he was pursuing a degree to become an ordained minister. An active member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, Donnie was serving his church as Youth Minister/Pastor and Youth Choir Director. He taught a class for Young Adults on Wednesday nights and was a Sunday School Teacher.

Donnie was formerly employed with the S.C. Department of Transportation and later with the Union County Detention Center. Involved in many civic and community activities, he served as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Cross Keys Fire District and was a member of the Emergency Preparedness Team of Union County. Donnie was appointed by the S.C. Legislature to represent Union County in the S.C. Forestry Commission. He was an avid sportsman and a member of the Union Coon Hunt Club.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his finance, Melody Martin of Rock Hill; a brother, Jimmy Estes and wife Stepheny of Union; a nephew, Blaine Estes; a niece, Ansleigh Estes both of Union; four special cousins: Steven Lipsey, David and George Pridemore and Elly Smith all of Union; a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. He was predeceased by both his maternal and paternal grandparents: Mack and Iva Duncan and Minnie Lou and Clarence Poole Estes.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carroll Caldwell, Rev. Larry Padgett and Rev. Shep Bevis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Larry Moss, age 49, husband of Jill Lawson Moss of 1184 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, SC died Friday, March 27, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Moss was born in Union, SC , January 31, 1960, a son of Laura Joyce Alman Moss of the home and the late Harrison Moss. He was employed with Adams Brothers Logging and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons: Jamison Larry Moss and wife Beth and Matthew Moss all of Union; two grandchildren: Madison Lea Frost Moss of Jonesville and Jay Levi Moss of Union and two step-sons: Brad Smith of Pelzer and Lee Smith of Jonesville. Mr. Moss was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Willie Lee and Norma Farr Gallman; paternal grandparents, Rufus and Myrtle Palmer Moss and a step-grandmother, Annie Stevens Alman.

Mrs. Laura Howell Kirby, age 89, widow of Roland Dudley Kirby died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Greenwood, SC, September 9, 1919, a daughter of the late William Miles Howell, Sr and Bertha Palmer Howell. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from Belk’s Department Store in Spartanburg. Mrs. Kirby was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Kirby Jobe and husband John of Minnola, Texas; two sons: Christopher Miles Kirby and wife Adrianna of New York and Mike Kirby of Burnsville, NC; a sister, Mrs. H. H. Willard, Jr.; a brother, William Miles Howell and wife Harriett all of Union; three granddaughters: Laura Ann Jobe and Lynn Morgan Jobe both of Texas and Sally Kirby Turner and husband Jake of Shelby, NC. Mrs. Kirby was predeceased by a son, Lynn Dudley Kirby.

Mr. Thomas Leroy Davis, age 62, of 1470 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, SC died Monday, March 30, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Davis was born in Union, SC, February 13, 1947, a son of Grace Moss Davis of Union and the late Leroy Davis. He was formerly employed with United Merchants having worked at the Buffalo and Union Plants and attended Lakeside Baptist Church.

Surviving are three brothers: Wayne Martin and wife Rosanna with whom he made his home, Marvin Davis and wife Lessie of Columbia and Ecker Davis and wife of Louisiana; two sisters: Brenda Webb of the home and Patricia Davis of Gray Court; a number of nieces, nephews and three special great-nieces: Jessica Lynn, Katie Robertson and Bayleigh Robertson. Mr. Davis was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Ann Davis.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.
