Ruth Willard

Mrs. Ruth Bogan Willard, age 88, wife of the late Alvin M. Willard went to be with the Lord Friday, November 27, 2009.

Mrs. Willard was born in West Springs, April 17, 1921, a daughter of the late Furman Bogan and Anna Mary Gowan Bogan. She was a graduate of West Springs High School, member of Bogansville United Methodist Church and a member of Mary Sue Keith’s Sunday School Class.

Survivors are a grandson, Alvin Len Earnhardt and wife, Marie of Jonesville; a great granddaughter, Aleeson Marie Earnhardt of West Springs; a sister, Theo Catherine Hill of Pauline; several beloved nieces and nephews; and a special dog, Magic. Mrs. Willard was predeceased by a daughter, Annie W. Earnhardt, a sister, Leila Bogan Hill and two brothers, Dupre Bogan and F.P. Bogan, Jr.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson and Rev. Mike Hill.

Members of The Mary Sue Keith’s Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held before the service from 10:00 until 11:00 AM in the Bogansville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Memorials maybe made to Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4052 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy. Jonesville, SC. 29353.

The family is at the home of her sister, Theo Catherine Hill, 117 Orin Graham Circle Pauline, SC. 29374 of the West Springs Community.


Nancy Cabaniss
Union, SC

Mrs. Nancy Cecile Hughey Cabaniss, age 64, wife of John Earl Cabaniss of 145 Adams Lake Rd. Union, died Saturday, November 28, 2009.

Mrs. Cabaniss was born in Jonesville, SC, March 18, 1945, a daughter of Doris Greene Hughey and the late Hiram Nelson Hughey. She was member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and a former Sunday School Teacher of the Adult Women Sunday School Class. Mrs. Cabaniss retired from Milliken and Company- Cedar Hill Plant.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Kim Cabaniss Petty and husband Mike of Lockhart; four sisters, Mabel Boozer of Joanna; Patty Meeks of Clinton; Judy Heflin of Newberry; Jacki Ellis of Clinton; two grandchildren, Earl Petty and Heather Petty both of Lockhart. Mrs. Cabaniss was predeceased by a sister, Martha Ann Hazel.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. John Lee. Burial will follow in the Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Members of The Adult Women Sunday School Class is asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 11:00 until 12:30 prior to the service.

Delilah Sue Fallen
Union, SC

Mrs. Delilah Sue Fallen, age 62 of 270 Oakland Rd., Lot 4, Union, SC died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at he home after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Fallen was born in Union, SC, May 20, 1947, a daughter of the late James Arthur Holt and Marion Grady Holt. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Tammy Willard and fiancee’ Garry Griffin of Union, Lisa Lindsey and husband Michael of Spartanburg and Sherry Fallen of Union; two sons: Chris Fallen of Rock Hill and Edward Fallen and wife Kirkline of Aiken; a sister, Linda Mayes of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Donald Ray Fallen, Kenndal Crawford, Ashley Willard, Kaleigh Fallen and Tiffany Ford; three great-grandchildren: Michael Crawford, Tanner Fallen and Logan Adams and her former husband and longtime companion, Edward Fallen, Sr. Mrs. Fallen was predeceased by a great-grandson, Issiah Maddox Fallen, two sisters, Barbara Holt and Patricia Corn and two brothers, James F. Walls and Bobby Walls.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ken Holcombe and Rev. Robert Cato. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Lindsey, Artie Mayes, Jake Mayes, Steve Davis, Brad Childers and Reggie Reid.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Margaret Belue Jones
Buffalo, SC

Mrs. Margaret Belue Jones, age 76 of 604 Flat Drive, Buffalo, SC went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at her home after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Jones was born in Buffalo, SC September 9, 1933, a daughter of the late Jordan Henry Belue and Sarah Allen Belue. She was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Jones was a retired registered nurse with Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Karen Jones Lawson and husband Ray and Kim Jones Walden and husband Michael all of Buffalo; three sisters: Mable Walls of Camden, Shirley Taylor of Jonesville and Eveline Gibbs of Union and three grandchildren: Sarah Beth Walden, Zachary Lawson and Delaney Lawson. Mrs. Jones was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Belue and two brothers, James Belue and J.R. Belue.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 27, 2009 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tony Rector, David Barker, Matthew Taylor, Anthony Taylor, Keith Wright and Bill Liner.

Ruth Grubbs
Union, SC

Mrs. Ruth S. Grubbs, age 80, wife of Albert Grubbs of 107 Longview Heights, Union, SC died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Restortative Care.

Mrs. Grubbs was born in Barnwell, SC March 1, 1929, a daughter of the late Levy Still and Ida Elkin Davis. She retired from Sonoco Products; was a member of Church of the Nazarene and attended Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Tony Allen Groves of Union and Ronnie Joe Groves of Buffalo; three daughters: Donna Fenton of St. George, SC, Sharen Ware of Ladson, SC and Karen Ward of New Hope, SC; two sisers: Betty Dycus of Hamlett, NC and JoAnn Sanders of Elko, SC; two brothers: Merice Still of Barnwell, SC and Obie Still of Hilda, SC; fourteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs. Grubbs was predeceased by a son, Jackie Groves, two brothers: Elbert Still and Lowman Still and a sister, Myrtle Still.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David R. Lewis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Grubbs’ grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Irving E. Billings
Buffalo, S.C.

Mr. Irving Ernest Billings, formerly of Buffalo-West Springs Hwy. Buffalo, died Saturday, November 20, 2009 at the St. Francis Hospital, Eastside, Greenville SC. For the past 7 years, he was a resident of National Health Care of Greenville.

Born May 10, 1919, Mr. Billings was the son of the late Mac and Maggie Sherbert Billings and was the last surviving member of his immediate family and the oldest surviving member of Mt Lebanon Baptist Church. Until his health declined, he was a faithful member of the church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He was a former supervisor with Buffalo Manufacturing Plant and was retired from Beverage Air in Spartanburg. Mr. Billings was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Beatrice Tucker Billings, two sisters: Mattie Fincher and Christine Lawson; and three brothers: Howard, Fincher and Jim Billings.

Surviving are three daughters and their husbands: Peggy and Richard Kulper of Seneca, Elaine and Roger Bishop of Union, and Loretta and Terry Kingsmore of Simpsonville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Lori Patterson and husband Noel and children Logan and Lauren of Simpsonville; Jay Gibson of Atlanta, GA; and Ty Kingsmore and wife Britta and daughter Keira of Austin, TX.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jimmie Farmer and Mr. Ken Bogan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday prior to the service at the church.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the nursing staff at National Health Care of Greenville for the love and care given to their father and to St. Francis Hospice for their kindness during his last hours.

Betty Black Thompson
Chester, SC

Mrs. Betty Black Thompson, age 74, formerly of 730 Spirit Circle, Chester, SC, widow of Donald L. Thompson, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Chester Regional Nursing Center.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Union County, SC, July 20, 1935, a daughter of the late Sam R. Black and Bell Knox Black. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was formerly employed with the hospitals in Union and Chester. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Donna Jean Thompson and Deanne Marie Thompson both of Chester; four sisters: Susie Palmer of Union, Nancy Black, Helen Meredith and Elizabeth Black all of Chester and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tim Driggers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 3:00-5:00 PM Saturday afternoon at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Clyde Rutledge, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. Clyde Rutledge, Jr., formerly of Union, SC passed away Friday, November 13, 2009 at the Brain Center in Hendersonville, NC. Mr. Rutledge was the widower of Margaret Windsor Rutledge.

Mr. Rutledge was born August 14, 1929 in Polk County, GA to the late Clyde Rutledge, Sr. and Fay Morgan Rutledge.

Mr. Rutledge was retired from textile management and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Michael Rutledge and wife Karen of Stokesdale, NC and Charles Rutledge of Columbia, SC; three step-children: Perry Haney and wife Vicki, Jo Frieda Good and Lynn Bobo all of Union; a sister: Peggy Clark of Union and a number of grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery in Union, conducted by Rev. Robert Cato.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

Susie Gibson Bridges
Union, SC

Ms. Susie Gibson Bridges, age 60, of 203A Gage Avenue, Union, SC died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Ms. Bridges was born in Spartanburg County, SC November 18, 1948, a daughter of the late Sam Gibson and Beatrice Wines Gibson. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church were she was a member of Sara Wade Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter, Windy Fowler of the home; two sisters: Catherine Ernandez of Lancaster and Edith Poteat of Spartanburg. Ms. Bridges was predeceased by two brothers, Brady Gibson and Sammy Gibson.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman.

Active pallbearers will be Sam White, Larry Robinson, Tom Alexander, Joel Wood, Billy Parker and Bruce Hammett.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Walter "Jack" Robinson
Union, SC

Mr. Walter Jackson "Jack" Robinson, age 76, husband of Annie Shetley Robinson of 134 Ben Black Rd., Union, SC died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Robinson was born in Union, SC November 9, 1933, a son of the late Ellis "Cordwood" Robinson and Annie Bryant Robinson. He was a retired textile worker and was of the Church of God faith. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Michael D. Robinson and wife Janice of West Columbia; a sister, Ruth Anderson and husband Cliff of Union; a brother, Paul Robinson and wife Shirley of Buffalo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four step-sons: Pete Shetley, Gene Shetley, Earl Shetley and wife Kelly and Dennis Shetley all of Union. Mr. Robinson was predeceased by two sons: Jimmy Robinson and Joe Robinson and a step-son, Walter Shetley.

Graveside memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Donald Glenn Hyder, SR
Union, SC

Mr. Donald Glenn Hyder, Sr, age 73 of 524 Hawkins Rd., Union, SC, widower of Nancy Rebecca LeMaster Hyder went home to be with the Lord after a five year battle with cancer, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the home of his daughter.

Mr. Hyder was born in Union, SC, September 16, 1936, a son of the late Ed Hyder and Lillian Greene Hyder. He was a 1955 graduate of Union High School and retired from Cone Mills- Carlisle Finishing after thirty-seven years of service. Mr. Hyder was a member of Machine Printers & Engravers Association and an avid gospel music lover. He was a Veteran of the US Army and a member of Hebron Baptist Church where he was a member of the Jim Woods Sunday School Class. Mr. Hyder was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Beth Hyder Timer and husband Daniel; a son, Don G. Hyder, Jr and wife Christy; three sisters: Vivian Jolly, Cornelia Owings and Lorena Gregory; a brother, Maurice Hyder all of Union; three grandsons: David Medford of Akron, OH, Nicholas Bledsoe and Issac Bledsoe and a granddaughter, Kateline Palmer and a companion Yorkie-Poo, Angel.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 13, 2009 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Larry Padgett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Hyder, Jeff Hyder, Robin Owings, Stacey Pearson, Eddie Jolly and Benji McDade. Members of the Jim Woods Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Thomas "Tommy" Mathis
Union, SC

Mr. Thomas Carey "Tommy" Mathis, age 52 of 1305 Jonesville Hwy., Union, SC died Monday, November 9, 2009 at Spartanburg Restorative Care.

Mr. Mathis was born in Union, SC, December 29, 1956, a son of the late Louie Mose Mathis and Mary Virginia Mobley Mathis. He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Carlisle Finishing Company. Mr. Mathis was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters: Martha Yarbourgh and husband David of Union and Suzette Northern, with whom he made his home and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, Novembr 12, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Scott and Rev. Chuck Parrott. Burial will be in Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The following nephews will serve as active pallbearers: Joey Northern, Matthew Northern, Blake Northern, Dustin Weltman, Jason Yarbrough and Todd Weltman.

Visitation will be held 2:00-3:00 PM Thursday in the chapel prior to the service.

Paul "Butch" Lawson
Union, SC

Mr. Paul Irvin "Butch" Lawson, age 60 of 973 Jones Ford Road, Union, SC died Monday, November 9, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lawson was born in Union, SC September 22, 1949, a son of the late Paul Irvin "Tobby" Lawson and Mettie Smith Lawson. He was formerly employed with Central Trucking and was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Lawson was also a Mason.

Surviving are a daughter, Tammi Lawson and friend David Cannon; a sister, Kitty L. Compton; a fiancee, Tina Ruby and her daughters, Michel Ruby and Heather Ruby all of Union; a granddaughter, Kimberly D. Lawson; a niece, Wendy C. Sumner and husband Beau; a nephew, Richie Compton and wife Lisa; three great-nieces: Kacie Taylor and husband Bobby, Ashli Sumner and Marah Hart; a great-nephew, Joshua Sumner and a great-great-nephew, Evan Sumner. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly F. Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 6:00 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell.

Visitation will be held in the chapel immediately following the service.

Walter Donald Palmer
Union, SC

Mr. Walter Donald Palmer, age 84, husband of Sally Vanderford Palmer of 271 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union, SC died Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Palmer was born in Union, SC, April 30, 1925, a son of the late William Palmer and Rosa Brown Palmer. He was owner and operator of Palmer’s Service Station and retired from Torrington & Company. Mr. Palmer was a member of First Baptist Church of Lockhart where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Adult Department Director. He was also a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244, in good standing for sixty years. Mr. Palmer was a Veteran of the US Navy having served during World War II. He was dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Ryan Palmer and wife Rhoda of Franklin, TN and Barry Palmer and wife Dale of Union; three grandchildren: Jennifer Crocker, Joni Crocker and Lindsay Palmer; three great-grandchildren: Gracie Crocker, Reese Crocker and Callie Crocker and a brother, Don Palmer of Hendersonville, NC. Mr. Palmer was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers: Martha Porter, Addie Estes, Helen Ivey, Will Palmer and Fred Palmer.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, November 9, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Lockhart conducted by Rev. Ben Hill and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Allen, Ronnie Crocker, Jeff Bailey, Dale Inman, Jim Palmer and Merritt "Tuie" Wentz. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM Monday to form the Honorary Escort: Mack Rash, Don McSwain, Thomas "Buck" Latham, Pete Stachler, Rick McCloud, Dennis Revis and current and former Deacons of First Baptist Church of Lockhart.

George Maurice Kerr, Sr.

Mr. George Maurice Kerr, Sr., age 76, husband of Deborah Nixon Kerr of 133 Hummingbird Lane, Union, SC went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 5, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Kerr was born in Union, SC May 3, 1933, a son of the late Truesdale Kerr and Thelma Yelton Kerr. He retired as owner-operator of Presto Door Service. Mr. Kerr was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in the Korean War. He was a member of Oakbrook Community Church, the Lions Club and a former Boy Scout Leader.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Cheryl Ann Watson and Shannon Murice Lopez both of Union; two sons: George "Ricey" Kerr, Jr of Enoree and daughter-in-law Ann Frances of Union and Eric Scott Kerr and wife Susan of Union; a sister, Dale LaJuan Tallo and husband Richard of Missippi; a brother, Andre Fielding Kerr and wife Susan of Gaffney; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and special friends, Christy Duncan, Josh Robbins and Jesse Robbins. Mr. Kerr was predeceased by a brother, Bennie Stowe Kerr, sister-in-law, Margaret S. Kerr and a nephew, Keith Yelton Kerr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with Military Honors.

Paul "Dudley" Johnson
Union, SC

Mr. Paul E. "Dudley" Johnson, age 90 of 112 Jeffries Street, Union, SC, widower of Mary Lee Mitchel Johnson, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Johnson was born in Buffalo, SC January 5, 1919, a son of the late John Henry Johnson and Sallie Sims Johnson. He retired from Milliken & Company - Monarch Mill and was a Veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. Mr. Johnson also retired from South Carolina National Guard.

Surviving are a son, Wesley L. Johnson and wife Shirley and a granddaughter, Starsha Johnson all of the home.

At the request of Mr. Johnson, no funeral services will be held.

Mr. Rowlen H. Chavis, Sr, age 66 of Campobello, SC died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Restorative Care in Spartanburg.

Mr. Chavis was born in Hamlet, NC February 2, 1943, a son of the late Rowlen Alex Chavis and Lillian Goins Chavis. He was a retired Barber and was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving are a daughter, Tonya Holmes and husband Terry of Jonesville; three sons: Rowlen H. Chavis, Jr of Jonesville, Joseph Henry Chavis of Spartanburg and Charlie Chavis, Jr and wife Tonya of Campobello; two step-children: Dorothy Lawter of Chesnee and Debra Mathis of Spartanburg; former wives and very special friends: Sandra Chavis Fowler of Jonesville and Caroline Cash of Spartanburg; ten grandchildren: Jordan, Conley and Bryce Holmes, Joseph Chavis, Jr.,Olivia, Brittney, Jacob, Joshua and Chara Chavis and Trent Large ; nine sisters: Mary Henry of West VA, Myrtle Chislom of CA, Lillian Ostrum, Annie Ruth Alexander, Martha Rosman all of Inman, Queenie Martindale, Dorothy Byrd both of Columbia, Elvie Wilson of Irmo, and Jeanette Foster of Campobello; two brothers: Jimmy Chavis of Inman and Johnny Chavis of Campobello and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Chavis was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 6, 2009 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Dr. Jim Ivey and Rev. Mark Williams.

Active pallbearers will be Rowlen Chavis, Jr., Joseph Chavis, Johnny Chavis, Charlie Chavis, Terry Holmes and Conley Holmes.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:45 PM Friday at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel prior to the service.

The family is at the home of his daughter, Tonya and Terry Holmes, 856 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, SC 29353.

Jesse Warren Vinson
Buffalo, SC

Mr. Jesse Warren Vinson, age 54, of 1062 Main St. Buffalo, SC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at his home after declining health.

Mr. Vinson was born in Union, SC, April 17, 1955, a son of the late Jesse Vinson and Nina Pearl Scott Shetley. He was a graduate of Union High School and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vinson was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Brian Vinson of Buffalo and Dalton Vinson of Lockhart; a brother, Ernest Vinson; two half brothers, Mark Shetley and Gene Shetley all of Buffalo; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Mr. Vinson was predeceased by a brother, Sammy Lynn Vinson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 1, 2009 at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess.

The family will receive friends tonight, Saturday October 31, 2009 at the home of Gene Shetley of 136 Fairforest Heights, Buffalo, SC.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ricky Malpass, Darrel Fisher, Buddy Fisher, Charles Fisher, Charles Whitaker, Bob Wilkins and Barry Haney.
