Wallace Earl Robinson

Mr. Wallace Earl Robinson, age 74, husband of Ferol Kelly Robinson of Flagler Beach, FL, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Florida Hospital Flagler. Natives of Union, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson have made their home in Flagler Beach since 1973.

Mr. Robinson was born in Union, March 3, 1935, a son of the late Wallace Thomas Robinson and Annie Fowler Robinson. He was retired in construction work and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Flagler Beach where he had been a volunteer with other Baptist men going to Kigoma, Tanzania, East Africa to build a medical clinic for a missionary doctor. He enjoyed gardening, growing tomatoes, and especially loved his two dogs, Peaches and Laddie.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 35 years are two sisters: Sadie Boulware of Union and Azalee Blackmon of York and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Robinson was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Ivey.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, November 1, 2009 at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Dr. Jim Ivey.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mae Chalk Adams
Union, SC

Mrs. Mae Chalk Adams, age 85, formerly of Eison Rd., Union, SC died Monday, October 26, 2009 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Adams was born in Union, SC, September 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Clarence Chalk and Bessie Baine Chalk. She retired from Wallace Thompson Hospital as a greeter. Mrs. Adams was a dedicated member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a former member of Louise Garner Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two daughters: Janice Adams Bain of Whitmire and Carolyn Adams Lindler and husband Reggie of Union; four grandchildren: Jennifer W. Kimbrell, Jan Wright Ivey both of Union, Rae Bain of Whitmire and Kendall Austin of Union; four great-grandchildren: Cam and Cade Kimbrell, Chandler and Taylor Austin all of Union and two sisters: Grace C. Greene of Union and Evelyn Armstrong of Spindale, NC. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Adams Austin, a son, Richard W. Adams and a grandson, Jeffrey Wright.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday in the church prior to the service.

Active pallbearers will be Kendall Austin, Michael Sinclair, Jimmy Kimbrell, Cam Kimbrell, Jamie Ivey and Fant Austin.

David Ray Phillips

Mr. David Ray Phillips, age 47, of 2236 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Phillips was born in Union, SC, December 12, 1961, a son of the late Harry Ray "Abie" Phillips and Gayle Crawford Phillips. He was a 1980 graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Phillips was formerly employed with AT&T and a member of Community Works of America and the AFLCIO, CLC Local 3716. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Young Adults Sunday School Class. Mr. Phillips was also a member of the BPOE #1321 Elks Lodge.

Surviving are a daughter, Reanna Starr Phillips; a son, Casey Ryan Philliips both of the home; a brother, Michael Wayne Phillips and wife Michelle of Greenville; a number of cousins, aunts and uncles; special friends, Randy "Chump" and Susan Hanvey of Union and numerous other close friends.

Funeral arrangements will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Terry Mitchell. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 1:30-3:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service.

Richard O. Dudley
Union, S.C.

Mr. Richard O. Dudley, age 78, of 305 N. Church St., Union, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Dudley was born in Pennsylvania, Jan. 19, 1931 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII. He was retired from the S.C. National Guard and the Union Co. Sherriff’s Dept., Town of Jonesville. Mr. Dudley was a member of the Union Church of Christ.

Surviving are a daughter: Patricia Dudley of the home; a son: William Dudley of Union; two grandsons: David Dudley and friend Bonnie Taylor, and Chris Dudley; two granddaughters: Brittany Dudley and Cricket Dudley and two great-grandsons.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Richard Carlson.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside services.

Willie Lee Hogan

Mr. Willie Lee Hogan, age 77, husband of Frances McDaniel Hogan of 101 Culbreath Heights, Union, SC died Friday, October 23, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hogan was born in Arcadia, SC September 1, 1932, a son of the late John Lee Hogan and Pearl Dawson Hogan. He retried from United Merchants - Union Mill and was a former member of the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Hogan attended Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-nine years are three daughters: Geraldine Hogan Burnette of Greer, Cynthia Hogan Cooke and husband Sammy and Angela Gail Hogan all of Union; a sister, Mamie Bodenheimer of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Daniel Jefferson Hogan of Anderson; two grandchildren: Monty Cooke and wife Tabithia and Jeffrey Cooke and wife Laura; four grandsons: Hunter, Holden, Devan and Jeremy Cooke and a great-granddaughter, Katie Cooke. Mr. Hogan was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Franklin and two brothers, Clyde Nash Hogan and James Lawson Hogan.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 25, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conduced by Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Laura T. Fant
Murrells Inlet, S.C.

Mrs. Laura Tomlin Fant, age 93, widow of David Bothwell Fant, formerly of Beechwood Place , Union, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Fant was born in Statesville, NC, December 26, 1915, a daughter of the late William Herbert Tomlin and Lucille Pitts Tomlin Query. She attended Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC. During WWII, Mrs. Fant served in administration with the American Red Cross and traveled on duty to Germany, France and Switzerland. She retired from the S.C. Dept of Social Services in Union Co. as a social worker. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she was a Deacon and a member of the Women’s Circle #1. Mrs. Fant was active in many clubs and organizations including the Union Cottilion Club and the Junior Charity League. She was also a member of the Converse College Concert Series for many years and was a member of various bridge clubs. Mrs. Fant was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters: Josie Ranalli of Murrells Inlet with whom she had made her home, Linn Baum and husband Jerry of Lawrenceville, GA and Jennie Holton Fant of Durham, NC; three grandchildren: Leigh Tomlin Kight and husband Lee, Elizabeth Mason Morris and Gabby Ranalli; one great-grandson: Gavin Chambley.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Thursday, October 22, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:30 AM prior to the services at the church.

Gladys Horner Revis
Union, SC

Mrs. Gladys Horne Revis, age 75, of 147 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, SC, widow of Lawrence Dewey Revis died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Revis was born in Lockhart, SC September 14, 1934, a daughter of the late Lewis Edward Horne and Estelle Dabbs Horne. She was a 1952 graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from Oakmont Nursing Home as a nurse’s aid. Mrs. Revis was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the "Mama Ruby’s" Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter, Kendra Owens; a son, Larry Revis both of Union; a sister, Carol McMakin and husband Jerry of Taylors, SC; two brothers: Grady Horne and wife Brenda and Harold Horne all of Union; special grandsons: Jake Wilburn of Union and Shannon McMakin of Taylors and a special niece, Susan Horne of Union. Mrs. Revis was predeceased by a sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev John Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Horne, Kenneth Horne, Chris Horne, Craig Horne, Derrick Horne and Jake Wilburn. Members of the "Mama Ruby’s" Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 12:00-1:45 PM Thursday in the church prior to the service.

Mr. Donald Ray Wilkins, age 62, husband of Sybil Broome Wilkins of 280 Haney Cemetery Rd., Union, SC died Friday, October 16. 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Wilkins was born in Union, SC May 4, 1947, a son of the late Jimmy Wilkins and Grace Eubanks Wilkins. He is a retired construction worker and attended Lockhart Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Stacie O’Shields of Lockhart; two sisters: Linda Jean Parker and Millie Barber both of Raleigh, NC; a grandson reared in the home, Blake O’Shields; a granddaughter, Morgan O’Shields; special brothers and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wilkins was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy C. Wilkins.

Graveside services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Wayne Tyler, Rev. Glandon Broome and Rev. Terry Broome.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mrs. Carolyn Hawkins Steagall, age 62, wife of Gerald D. Steagall of 114 Harlan Street, Union, SC died Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Steagall was born in Union, SC July 2, 1947, a daughter of the late Henry Alvin Hawkins and Elizabeth Enlow Hawkins. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended USC - Union. Mrs. Steagall was formerly employed with Ace Sweater and was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of forty-three years are three sisters: Ada Royster and husband Red, Barbara Robinson both of Chester and Grace Silvers of Union; a brother, Burley Hawkins and wife Margie; her mother-in-law Nellie Steagall all of Union; a number of nieces, nephews; a very special friend, June Hicks of Columbia and a special kitty "Pebbles". Mrs. Steagall was predeceased by brothers, Henry, Jr, Harold, Williams and Johnny Hawkins and sisters, Estelle Cody, Lillie Mae Bright and infant Glory Jean Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 17, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Charles Richard Grafton
Lawrenceville, GA

Charles Richard Grafton, age 39, husband of Margaret Preston Grafton and father of Caleb and Nate, passed quietly from this life on Monday, October 12, 2009 in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Charles was born April 29, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio. A graduate of the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, he was a project manager for AT&T in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his parents Susan and Don Nelson of Belmont, NC, and Frank and Alice Grafton of Columbus, Ohio, his brother Andrew Grafton, step-sisters and their husbands Nicole and Wilbur Williams, Adrielle and Clint Goodwin, Carol and Bill Swisher, parents-in-law Jim and Peggy Blazek of New Orleans, LA, brother-in-law and wife Lt. Jonathan and Lt. Jessica Blazek, grandmother-in-law, Margaret Hames Maadden as well as nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 17th at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Jonesville, 222 Pacolet Street, Jonesville, SC 29353. Burial will be at the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville.

Mrs. Doris Culbertson Gregory, age 84, widow of Ernest E. "Peck" Gregory, formerly of 3539 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Lockhart, April 24, 1925 a daughter of the late Clyde Culbertson and Alice Mitchell Culbertson. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and a graduate of the Nursing Program at Chester Vocational School. Mrs. Gregory worked with Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant for 27 years and retired from Hope Hospital after 20 years as a LPN. She was a 50 year member of the #79 Martha Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. A member of Lockhart United Methodist Church, Mrs. Gregory was formerly a member of the choir and a Sunday School Teacher.

Surviving are two daughters: Jean Belue and husband Pete of Mt. Tabor and Ann Holcombe and husband Bruce of Easley; one brother: Harold Culbertson and wife Margaret of Union; three grandchildren: Joel Belue, Wendy Callahan and husband Mark, and Steven Belue and wife Kandy ; eight great-grandchildren: Dylan Lawson, Brittany, Cody, Tyler, and Faith Belue, Ethan, Peyton and Jensen Callahan. Mr. Gregory was predeceased by a sister: Katherine Brucker.

Graveside services will be held 4:30 PM Thursday, October 15, 2009, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Mr. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Ricky Cook.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.

Mr. Ray Rhymer, age 89, husband of Wilma Chalk Rhymer of 1707 Whitmire Hwy., Union, SC died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Rhymer was born in Asheville, NC, May 1, 1920, a son of the late Zebual Hardy Rhymer and Ella Alexander Rhymer. He retired from Rhymer and Littlejohn in Spartanburg and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-eight years are two daughters: Brenda Rhymer Smith of Wilson, NC and Jean Hansson and husband Dick of Greenville, NC; a sister, Lois Middlebrooks; a twin brother, Gay Rhymer both of Union; four grandchildren: Melanie Smith Young and husband Hal of Smithfield, NC, Edward Smith and wife Stepheni of Shanghai, China, Eric Hansson and Richard Hansson both of Greenville, NC; nine great-grandchildren: John, Caleb, Matthew, Samuel, Seth, David, Susannah and Katherine Young all of Smithfield, NC and Rachel Smith of Shanghai, China. Mr. Rhymer was predeceased by five sisters and three brothers.

Graveside services will be held 2:30 PM Friday, October 16, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Benny Green. IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, services will be held 2:30 PM Friday at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:15 PM Friday at SR Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

Clyde McSwain

Mr. Clyde McSwain, age 83, of 114 Happy Valley Rd., Union, SC, widower of Audrey Haney McSwain went home to be with his Heavenly Father and family, Monday, October 12, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McSwain was born March 8, 1926, a son of the late Ruby Fulmer. He was a retired textile worker and a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Patsy (Steve) Freeman with whom he made his home, Nancy Millwood of Union and Faye (David) Martin of Buffalo; eight grandchildren: Lena Freeman, Brian Millwood, Michael Millwood, Joey Martin, Amanda Wix, Richard Wicks, Amanda Black and Josh Freeman and a number of great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mr. McSwain was predeceased by a son, Edward McSwain and a sister, Louise Ridings.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton, Rev. Guy Langston and Rev. Joshua Freeman. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Edward Hudson

Mr. Edward Hudson, age 81, husband of Olivia Hoppes Hudson of 289 New Hope Church Rd., Jonesville, SC, died Monday, October 12, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Hudson was born in Great Fall, SC May 31, 1928, a son of the late Herbert Page Hudson and Iva Powers Hudson. He was a member of Oakland Road Baptist Church and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Hudson was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Michelle H. Holley of Hillsboro, OR; two sons: Michael Hudson and Ronald Hudson both of Houston, TX; a step-son, R.D. Motts of Pacolet; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Hudson was predeceased by a brother, Donald Hudson and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Hudson.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Cedar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale.

Sara Elizabeth Bobo
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Wilson Bobo, age 82, wife of Frank Bobo of 1212 Arthur Blvd. Union, died Sunday evening October 11, 2009 at her home.

Mrs. Bobo was born in Union, April 21, 1927, a daughter of the late Wallace and Sara Koon Wilson. She was a 1945 graduate of Union High School and attended Cecil’s Business School in Spartanburg. Mrs. Bobo was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and a former member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was active in many church activities including serving as Church Secretary, Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School director. She was a member of the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class at Mon Aetna Baptist Church. Mrs. Bobo was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter: Loraine Mellette and husband John of Blythewood; two sons: Frank Bobo, Jr and wife Linda of Union and Steve Bobo and wife Vicki of Greer; two sisters: Edith Faucett of Aiken and Ann Crawford of Union; three brothers: Evans Wilson of Union, George Wilson of Moore and Charles Wilson of Greenwood; six grandchildren: Charlie Bobo, III and wife Eileen, Angela Varner and husband Tad, Jonathan Bobo and wife Mary Beth, Matt Bobo and wife Brooke, Beth Mellette and Melissa Mellette; four great-grandchildren: Charlie Bobo, IV, George Bobo, Kayley Bobo and Philip Bobo. Mrs. Bobo was predeceased by a sister, Jane Bobo and three brothers, Wallace Wilson, Jr., Sam Wilson and Ernest Wilson.

Edith C. Rhodes

Mrs. Edith Cunningham Rhodes, age 93, widow of Charles C. Rhodes, formerly of Union, died at the home of her daughter in Papillion, NE, Friday, October 2, 2009 after a brief illness.

Mrs. Rhodes was born in Union, April 11, 1916, a daughter of the late Charles and Roxanne Mehaffey Cunningham. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Spartanburg High School as an administrative assistant. Mrs. Rhodes was a member of Unity Methodist Church and a member of the Union Garden Club. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Mary Ann Mustain and husband Robert of Lodi, CA and Sally Elizabeth Morales and husband Joe of Papillion, NE; three granddaughters: Elizabeth Pott and husband Mike of Elk Grove, CA, Keri Vogt and husband Steve of Byron, IL and Kelly Morales of LaVista, NE; one grandson: Charles Mustain and wife Stephanie of Tucson, AZ; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rhodes was predeceased by 8 sisters and 3 brothers.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Rev. Richard Lewis.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Saturday, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside service.

The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 2:45 PM Saturday to form the honorary escort: Joe Morales, Robert Mustain, Charles Mustain, David Johnson, Michael Kitchens, Steve Vogt, Harry D. Huskey and Tom Gladstone.

Elizabeth W. Rampey
Union, SC

Mrs. Elizabeth Walker Rampey, age 91, formerly of Brookside Drive, Union, widow of Clyde Thomas Rampey died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Rampey was born in Greenwood, SC September 27, 1918, a daughter of the late John Thomas Walker and Lois Cashion Walker. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander College. Mrs. Rampey was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons: Clyde Thomas "Tom" Rampey, Jr and wife Alice Wingo Rampey of Greer, SC and John Walker Rampey and wife Anne Liner Rampey of Union; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander and Rev. Thomas Griffith.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Altie Floyd
Union, SC

Mrs. Altie Pridemore Floyd, age 74, wife of James E. Floyd of 100 Francis Avenue, Union, SC died Friday, October 2, 2009 at Hospice of Laurens in Clinton, SC.

Mrs. Floyd was born in Union, SC March 8, 1935, a daughter of the late Grady Pridemore and Flora Hoglen Pridemore. She was formerly employed with Greenleaf; was a graduate of Bob Jones University and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters: Mae Tindall of Union and Margaret Sumner of Buffalo; a brother, Franklin Pridemore and wife Brenda of Union; special nieces: Destiny Cipriano and Angel Cagle both of Union and a number of other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Floyd was predeceased by a sister, Agnes Cagle and two brothers, E.K. Pridemore, Sr and Newton Pridemore.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Lee, Mickey McFalls, Ricky McFalls, Keith Thompson, Dell Pridemore and Jim Paul Watts. The ladies of Union Church of God are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home, 100 Francis Avenue, Union.
