Samuel "Rick" Howell

Mr. Samuel Reid "Rick" Howell, age 55, of 713 Linersville Rd., Buffalo, SC went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Howell was born in Union, SC March 30, 1954, a son of William H. "Bill"Howell of Jonesville and Marcella Burgess Smith of Jonesville. He was employed with Dollar General Distribution Center and was an avid racing fan. Rick was a loving son, father and brother who will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Jennifer Howell Owens; a grandson, Tyler Owens both of Hendersonville, NC; a sister, Teresa "Tes" Upton and husband Marshall of Jonesville; a brother, Gerald Howell and wife Angie of Union; a step-mother, Ruby Howell; a step-father, Ike Smith both of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a sister, Tammy Franklin.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 3, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Earl Howell, Dennis Burgess, Tony Burgess, Larry Dean Lemons, Dean Howell and Shawn Upton. Nurses and staff of Hospice Care of SC - Union Unit and the employees of Dollar General Distribution Center are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 7:00-8:30 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family is at the home of his mother, Marcella and Ike Smith, 186 Wedgewood Rd., Jonesville.

Mavis Thompson Landrum
Jonesville, SC

Mrs. Mavis Thompson Landrum, age 47 of 1427 West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, SC, widow of Richard W. Landrum died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs Landrum was born in Spartanburg, SC, November 27, 1961, a daughter of the late Carl Thompson and Roselle Thompson. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons: Dwayne Thompson and wife April and Bobby Gunter all of Jonesville; two sisters: Kay Waters of Duncan and Vicky Turner of Jonesville; two brothers: Gary Thompson and Billy Thompson both of Inman; three grandchildren: Tyler, Brandon and Madison Thompson; special nieces: Charity and Jessica Thompson, Rita Knox and several other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by a sister, Norma Ravan and two brothers, Tommy and Calvin Thompson.

Funeral services will be held 5:00 PM Friday evening at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held 4:00-5:00 PM Friday prior to the service in the chapel.

The family is at the home, 1427 West Springs Hwy., Jonesville.

Gary N. Foster
Buffalo, S.C.

Mr. Gary Newton Foster, age 63, of 543 Riley Rd., Buffalo, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Foster was born in the Pea Ridge community of Jonesville, April 5, 1946 a son of the late William Oscar Foster and Laura Eloise Wix Foster. He was employed with Milliken Co., Monarch Plant for over 45 years and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Foster was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving are a brother: Robert William Foster of Pelzer; five nieces and nephews that were reared in the home: Robin Boulware Underhill and husband Stacy of Buffalo, Lynn B. Knox of Jonesville, Mary Ann Boulware Ramsey and husband Lewis Daniel of Gaffney, Amos W. Boulware and wife Debbie of Union and Jackie Boulware of the home; three other nieces and nephews: Steven Foster and Mike Foster of Pelzer, Melissa Foster of Graniteville; and 9 great-nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews. Mr. Foster was predeceased by two sisters: Magdalene Matthews and Angela Dianne McKinney and one brother, Jackie Leland Foster.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Friday, October 2, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ray Harold Belue. Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Stacy Underhill, Lewis Daniel Ramsey, Jason Millwood, Jonathan McAbee, Terry Haney and Steven Foster.

Michael Shane Bledsoe

Mr. Michael Shane Bledsoe, age 34, of 3231 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy. Buffalo, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, September 26, 2009.

Mr. Bledsoe was born in Union, August 31, 1975 a son of Davie Gaston Bledsoe, Jr and Thelma Davis Bledsoe of the home. He was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with Henderson Plumbing. Mr. Bledsoe had recently given his testimony and was planning to be baptized at Philippi Baptist Church on Sunday where he had been attending.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons: Nicholas Gaston Bledsoe and Issac Shane Bledsoe both of Union; a step-daughter: Katelin Palmer of Union; three sisters: Linda Brown and husband David of Pacolet, Debra Robinson and husband Charles of Buffalo and Lisa White of Pauline; one brother: David Wayne Bledsoe of Buffalo; a special friend: Mary Ann King and her children, Regan and Riley all of Union; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 2, 2009 a Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Cannon Cohen, Mickey Chestnut, Neal Edmonds, Jesse Robinson, George Hodge and Robert Grant.

Darrell Altas Waters
Union, SC

Mr. Darrell Altas Waters, age 75, husband of Dorcas Lorraine Tyre Waters of 124 Fairway Drive, Union, SC died Monday, September 28, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Waters was born in Waycross, Ga, March 17, 1934, a son of the late Ocen Waters and Queen Elizabeth Brannen Waters. He was retired owner and operator of Country Chrysler Dodge which was located on the Jonesville Highway for a number of years. Mr. Waters was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Harriet Alvarez and husband Benny of Kingsland, Ga and Marla Phillips and husband Brent of Union; two grandsons: Jarrod Knight and wife Michelle and Dalton Knight; seven great-grandchildren: Jaidyn Knight, John B. Alvarez, III, Palmer, Hagan and Libby Alvarez, Ryley and Avery Parkin; a sister, Vilma Hendrix of Waycross, Ga; two brothers: D.C. Waters and wife Sheila of Waycross, Ga and Denver Waters and wife Joyce of Brunswick, Ga and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the home, 124 Fairway Drive, Union.

Alva Sutton
Whitmire, SC

Mr. Alva Sutton, age 78 of 1092 SC Hwy 66, Whitmire, SC died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Levine-Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.

Mr. Sutton was born in Bonny Blue, VA May 2, 1931, a son of the late Grant Sutton and Eva Morrison Sutton. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in Whitmire. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Rocky Sutton and fiancee Billie Propst of Sherrills Ford, NC and Johnny Sutton of Cornelius, NC; a companion of ten years, Elsie Vicars of the home; a sister, Dorothy Conner of Newberry; three brothers: Willie Ray Sutton, Melvin Sutton both of Whitmire and Paul Sutton of Newberry; five grandchildren: Graham, Kenzie, Natalie, Jenny and Amanda and a great-granddaughter, Jordyn. Mr. Sutton was predeceased by four sisters: Meda Bouknight, Opal Jennings, Edith Rupp and Billie Gribble.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Friendship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ray Harold Belue, Rev. Wayne Tobias and Chaplain Ronald Clifford Vicars. Burial will be in the Whitmire Cemetery with Military Honors.

Mr. Sutton will be taken to the home, 1092 SC Hwy 66, Whitmire, Tuesday and carried to the church Wednesday, where the family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM.

Louise Sparks
Union, SC

Mrs. Janie Louise Sparks, age 96, wife of sixty-three years of William Robert Sparks of 130 Hightower Lake Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Sparks was a two-time cancer survivor.

Mrs. Sparks was born in Pacolet, SC March 21, 1913, a daughter of the late Dess McBride and Maggie Harvey McBride. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Sparks was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Janice Babb and husband Walker of Buffalo; a son, Robert Glenn Sparks and fiancee Connie Sinclair of Union and a number of grandchildren and friends. Mrs. Sparks was predeceased by six brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon.

Nurses and staff of Hospice Care of South Carolina are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

The family is at the home, 130 Hightower Lake Rd., Union where they will also receive friends.

Ms. Donna Moore Lawson, age 53, of 1105 W. Main St., Union, died Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg after a brief illness.

Ms. Lawson was born in Union, March 26, 1956, a daughter of Patricia Edwards Jackson of Greenwood, IN and the late Bobby Moore, Sr. She was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her step-father: Wayne Jackson of Greenwood, IN; a son: Chad Russell and wife Wendy of Union; a daughter: Jessica Taylor and husband Michael of Laurens; two brothers: Robbie Moore and Tim Brissey and wife Jeana all of Greenwood, IN; five grandchildren: Alexis, Jacob, Hailey, Josie, and John Gavin; and her beloved pet dog, Lacy.

Graveside services will be held 12:00 noon Monday, September 28, 2009 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Hazel Smith Caldwell
Union, SC

Mrs. Hazel Smith Caldwell, age 85, wife of Glenn Caldwell of 1440 Robertson Lane, Buffalo, SC died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Caldwell was born in Union, SC January 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Amos Smith and Mae Lawson Smith. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the S.C. Employment Security Commission after thirty-one years of service. Mrs. Caldwell was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church where she was a longtime member of the Chancel Choir, Pat Flood Circle and a former church treasurer. Mrs. Caldwell was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Amy Caldwell Crisp; a grandson, David Crisp and wife Laura all of Buffalo; a sister, Waunet Petty of Union; a sister-in-law, Ruth Lancaster of Buffalo; a brother-in-law, Don Caldwell and wife Bobbie of Ahoskie, NC and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Caldwell was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Robertson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton and Rev. Mickey Fisher. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The nurses and staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and the staff of Sunshine Day Care are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:30 PM Sunday in the church parlor prior to the service.

William C. Peahuff

Mr. William C. Peahuff, age 92 of 1239 Pineland Rd., Union, SC, widower of Beulah Knox Peahuff died Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Peahuff was born in Spartanburg County, SC December 5, 1916, a son of the late John Peahuff and Monnie Brannon Peahuff. Mr. Peahuff was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Mary L. Peterson of Gaffney and Mary E. Lee of Union; a son, Paul J. Peahuff and wife Judy of Union and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Peahuff was predeceased by a son, Ernest Peahuff and a grandson, Dale Peahuff.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Cook.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the graveside.

Mr. Grady Lewis Purkey, age 91, husband of Agnes Ruth McKinney Purkey of 211 Fairbanks St., Jonesville, passed away at his home Wednesday, September 23, 2009.

Mr. Purkey was born in Gaston Co., NC, March 8, 1918, a son of the late William Daniel Purkey and Mary Elizabeth Biddy Purkey. He was retired from J.P. Stevens and was an active member of Jonesville Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. Mr. Purkey was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 75 years are a son: Ron Purkey and wife Gail; a niece: Ruth Addis all of Jonesville. Mr. Purkey was predeceased by a grandson, Todd Purkey.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 25, 2009 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

The members of the Lewis Purkey Sunday School Class of Jonesville Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Nina Spillers Cook, age 78, of 2860 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy. Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 19, 2009 at her home.

Mrs Cook was a homemaker and was a member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church of Buffalo.

Surviving are her former husband, Billy Joe Cook, Sr. of Florida; six sons: Bobby Hutcherson of GA, Billy J. Cook, Jr. and wife Alene, Ricky D. Cook and wife Sheila of Buffalo, Randy R. Cook and wife Cindy, Timothy W. Cook and special friend Sherry of Union and Ronnie D. Cook and wife Teresa of Buffalo; eighteen grandchildren; twenty nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Cook was pre-deceased by two daughters: Martha Dougherty and Cynthia Ireland and an infant son Marty Cook.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Myrtle Lawson Weaver, age 77, formerly of West End Manor, Union, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Mary Black Hospital. Mrs. Weaver was the widow of Ray Stewart Weaver.

Born in Union, June 29, 1932, Mrs. Weaver was a daughter of the late Roy T. Lawson, Sr. and Pearl Mae Lawson Lawson. Mrs. Weaver was retired from Conso Products of Union and

was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter: Sheila Wright and husband Doug of Lyman, SC; a granddaughter: Emily Wright of Lyman; step-children: Linda Rogers, Wendy Glenn, Patti Jenkins, Sara Wallace, Mike Weaver, and Kenny Weaver; numerous step- grandchildren and step- great-grandchildren; three sisters: Hazel Bobo and husband Sam, Martha Copeland and husband Guy, and Carol Cookson and husband Bud and one brother: Harold Lawson and wife Bobbie Jean all of Union. Mrs. Weaver was pre-deceased by a granddaughter: Rebecca Wright;

sisters: Lizzie Mae Crawford, Lena Bobo, Gladys Boulware and an infant Mildred Lawson; brothers: States Lawson and R. T. Lawson, Jr.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Benny Green.

Rachel Gallman Houser
Union, SC

Mrs. Rachel Gallman Houser, age 84, formerly of St. George, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, September 18, 2009 at Brookview Health Care Center of Gaffney SC.

Mrs. Houser was born in Kelton, October 4, 1924 the daughter of the late Eugene Gallman and Marie Garner Gallman.

Mrs. Gallman was an educator for 49 years and was principal of Kelly Pinckney School for many years. She also taught at Lambs Elementary School in Chalreston. Mrs. Houser was a member of Cokesberry United Methodist Church of North Charleston.

Surviving are a brother L. D. Gallman and wife Nancy of Union; a grandson: John Houser of Rhode Island; a niece Elaine Thompson of Union; two great-nieces: Amber Gibson and Alyssa Kellett and a great- nephew: Brandon Kellett, all of Goose Creek, SC. She was pre-deceased by a son; Gene Houser.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 21, 2009 at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. John Cribb.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 Sunday evening at the S R Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mary Margaret Cabiness Gault

Mrs. Mary Margaret Cabiness Gault, age 76, of 105 Vision Drive, Union, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 19,2009 at her home. She was the widow of William J.(Jep) Gault.

Mrs. Gault was born in Spartanburg, April 11, 1933 a daughter of the late Lloyd Cabiness and Evelina Maynor Cabiness. Mrs. Gault was a graduate of Gaffney High School and was a home health care provider. Mrs. Gault was a member of Covenent Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Michael Gault and wife Bernice of Alexandria, Virginia and Timothy Gault, Sr. and wife Cherie of the home, a step-daughter: Paulretta Rutledge of Union, a grand son Timothy (TJ) Gault, Jr. of Hawaii, a special granddaughter: Nicole Pavlicek and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters: Diane Willimon and Rebecca Vohrer and a special pet Baby Love. Mrs. Gault was pre-deceased by a daughter: Tina Hart, a sister: Nancy Morris and a brother: Lloyd Cabiness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Covenant Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Chuck Parrott and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Marion Eugene Bishop, age 68, husband of Rebecca "Becky" Gault Bishop of 664 Lovers Lane Rd., Union, SC died suddenly Thursday, September 17, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Bishop was born in Union, SC, July 12, 1941, a son of the late Eugene Bishop and Lucille Humphries Bishop. He was a graduate of Union High School; retired from Milliken & Company - Excelsior Plant and was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Bishop was a member of Southside Fire Department and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Tommy Bishop and wife Sharon of Union; five grandchildren: Hannah Bishop, Becka Bishop, Jonathan Dow, Thomas Dow and Michael Dow; a brother-in-law, J.W. Estes of Union; a cousin, Geraldine Adams of Pauline and a close family friend, Mark Spencer of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham and Rev. Jim Ivey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Evelyn West Elliott, age 84, widow of Carl Sumter Elliott, went home to be with her heavenly Father, Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Elliott was born in West Springs Community of Union County, SC March 12, 1925, a daughter of the late Herbert James West, Sr and Beatrice West West. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. She retired from United Merchants - Buffalo Plant. Mrs. Elliott was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.3

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Elliott Lawson and husband Holland of Greer; three brothers: Herbert James West, Jr of FL, Donald West of Spartanburg and Robert West of Harrisville, PA; three grandchildren: Hollie Lawson Kutz of Greenville, Mark Jenkins and wife Amy of Thomson, Ga and Matthew Jenkins and wife Jennifer of Charleston; five great-grandchildren: Martha Ellen Kutz of Greer, Lansing James Jenkins, Martha Kate Jenkins, Mary Tinsley Jenkins all of Thomson, Ga and Evelyn Paige Jenkins of Charleston. Mrs. Elliott was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Elliott Jenkins and four sisters: Jenny Cunningham, Ruby Lawson. Vivian Lawson and Mary Kirby.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mark West, Mike West, Bobby West, Vic Elliott, Neal Elliott and Stanley Elliott. Members of T.E.L. Sunday School Class of Buffalo Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday evening at SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Robert Glenn Pridemore, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. Robert Glenn Pridemore, Sr., age 69, is celebrating his victory with his heavenly family following a valiant battle with cancer which he defeated late Thursday evening, September 10, 2009 at his home. He was the husband of Barbara Silvers Pridemore of 3008 Whitmire Hwy, Union.

Born in Whitmire, SC, April 24, 1940, a son of the late Ezra Pridemore and Margaret Osborne Pridemore. He was a 1960 graduate of Union High School, attended Spartanburg Technical College and was retired from Cone Mills-Carlisle Finishing Company. Mr. Pridemore was an active member of Hebron Baptist Church for the past 52 years. Having served as a Deacon, Usher and Sunday School Secretary, he also worked with the church on the Building and Grounds Committee, served on the Pulpit Committee and the Bus Committee. He was active in the Brotherhood, Adult Men’s Bible Class and the Jack Moore Bible Study Group. He was a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75 and worked with Relay For Life-American Cancer Society.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Robert Glenn Pridemore, Jr and wife Lesley of Union and Todd Elliott Pridemore and wife Dawn of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Brittany, Joshua, Marla, Alex and Cassidy; six sisters: Alma P. Faucette, Rosa Lee Clowney and husband Bill all of Union, Shirley Sturkie and husband Brice, Mildred Williamson all of Lexington, Bonnie Tippey and husband Wayne of Myrtle Beach and Essie Fechter and husband Mel of Sarasota, FL; three brothers: Bill Pridemore and wife Irina of Greer, Carl Pridemore and wife Jo Ann of Summerville and Earl Pridemore and wife Betty of Union; a god child, Dawn Thompson and special friends, Levi Longshore of "The Little Country Store", Tiffany Smith, Jamie Ivey and Adam Vinson. He was predeceased by a brother, Carson Pridemore.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Larry Padgett, Rev. Jerry Ford and Rev. Guy Langston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with a special prayer by Rev. David Williamson, his nephew. Masonic Rites will follow.

Active pallbeares will be Donald "Ducky" Lawson, Larry Evans, Bill Abee, David Dawkins, Dudley Adams and Leonard Green. Members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Hebron Baptist Church and fellow Masons are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Loyd Maness, age 94, of 119 Buffalo Street, Buffalo, SC, widower of Daisy O’Shields Maness died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Maness was born in Inman, VA, August 30, 1915, a son of the late Sterling Smith Maness and Charity Minor Maness. He was a Veteran of the US Army and also the US Navy having served in World War II. Mr. Maness was a member of Putman Baptist Church, American Legion Post 78, Duncan Lodge 256 and Past Great Sachem Redmen of SC. Mr. Maness retired from Textiles and was first married to the late Edna Miller Maness.

Surviving are two daughters: Sue Ridings and husband Felston and Brenda Sumner and husband Tommy all of Buffalo; a son, James H. Maness and wife Stella of Buffalo; two sisters: Valice Maness and Ruby Ford and husband J.W. all of Buffalo; two brothers: William H. Maness and wife Elizabeth and James L. Maness and wife Mary all of Union; two step-sons: Eddie Simmons and wife Betty Jo and Tommy Simmons and wife Suzette all of Buffalo; seven grandchildren: David Ridings and wife Roxanne, Gregg Maness, Lori Dochterman and husband Doug, Michele Lee and husband Lonnie, Elizabeth Gordon and husband Jon, Tommy Sumner, Jr and wife Donya and Lesley Robbins and husband Matthew; seven great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Kenneth Warren Lawson

Mr. Kenneth Warren Lawson, age 69, husband of Nancy Thomas Lawson of 815 Webber Lake Rd., Union, SC died Friday, September 11, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Lawson was born in Union, SC August 19, 1940, a son of the late Willie E. Lawson and Carrie Lucille Bates Lawson. He retired from Milliken & Co and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. Mr. Lawson was a Mason, a Shriner and formerly coached Little League Baseball and stinger football.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Donna Smith and special friend Rusty Ramsey; three sons: Kenny Lawson and wife Rhonda, Mark Lawson and Shane Lawson and special friend Melanie Wygant all of Union; a sister, Shirley Green; two brothers: Bobby Lawson and Wayne Lawson and wife Linda all of Union; a grandson reared in the home, Alan Lawson and eight other grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a number of special nieces and nephews. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by a great-grandson, Chase Bagwell.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb and Mr. David Berry. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Judith Ann Rountree

Ms. Judith Ann Rountree, age 69 of 102 Wimbleton Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness.

Ms. Rountree was born in Union, August 6, 1940, a daughter of James R. Rountree, Sr. of the home and the late Margaret Caldwell Rountree. She was a 1958 graduate of Union High School and a 1962 graduate of the University of South Carolina. Ms. Rountree was employed with Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC for over 43 years. She was a life long member of Grace United Methodist Church and was an avid Gamecock fan.

Surviving in addition to her father are two brothers: James R. Rountree, Jr. and wife Donna of Charlotte, John F. Rountree and wife Debra of Inman; cousins: Patty Russell, Chris Bridger and Steve Rountree; two nieces: Meredith Tarbell and Frances Vaughan; two nephews: Wes Rountree and Reay Rountree; and a very dear friend; Ned Owings.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, September 14, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Caughman. The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service at the church cemetery.

Mr. James "Wayne" Waldrop, age 57, husband of Teresa Howell Waldrop of 1297 Meansville Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Waldrop was born in Cherokee County, SC October 5, 1949, a son of the late James Waldrop and Ruth Amy Ervin Waldrop. He was formerly employed with Southern Fine Blanking in Cowpens. Mr. Waldrop was a loving husband, father, brother and friend with enjoyed fishing and was an avid Gamecock fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two step-children: Jessica Rector of the home and Kristy (Wani) Meranda of Humble, Texas; a special niece, Jodi Heatherly; a great-nephew, Paul Heatherly both of the home; three sisters: Bessie Whittle of Converse, Susie (Jerry) Kennan of Cowpens and Lynn (Larry) Hutchings of Gaffney; two brothers: Danny Ray (Vickie) Waldrop of Spartanburg and Kenneth (Jackie) Waldrop of Cowpens; a sister-in-law, Mary (Leroy) New of Jonesville; a brother-in-law, James (Perri) Howell of Spartanburg; a father-in-law, Wade Howell of the home; a special friend, Darlene Skilinski of Pacolet and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conduced by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Miss Janet Lynn Hines, age 47, of Meansville Rd., Union, SC died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Miss Hines was born in Union, SC February 15, 1962, a daughter of Frank and Ramoth O’Shields and Don and Flo Hines all of Union. She was a 1980 graduate of Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two brothers, Don Scott Hines and Alan Arthur Hines both of Union; a special sister and friend, Christy O’Shields Hyder and a sister Donise Hines Eubanks both of Union; two special people in her life, Laura O’Shields Crisp and Farrah Marie Wyatt and Alexis and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Lee.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Marvin Allen Wilson, age 88, husband of Frances Arline Tidwell Wilson formerly of 2708 Lockhart Hwy, Union, SC died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Wilson was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, May 13, 1921, a son of the late Willie M. Wilson and Lucille Copeland Wilson. He retired from Milliken & Co-Midway Finishing Plant and was formerly employed with Belk’s Department Store for a number of years. Mr. Wilson was a Veteran of the US Navy having served during World War II.. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of Sam Cain Sunday School Class and a former Sunday School Teacher.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Anita Hicks and husband Bobby of Union; a son, Gene Wilson and wife Beth of Columbia; a sister, Jewel Wilson of Buffalo; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Wilson of Jonesville; seven grandchildren: a granddaughter reared in the home, Kim Williams and husband Johnny, Melanie Fleming and husband Rodney, Joy Waters, Stephanie Smith, Alison Quaranta and husband Sean, Leigh Abee and Jeff Abee; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter, Analeigh Greer Hart. Mr. Wilson was predeceased by a daugher, Sondra Dorsey; a son, Steven "Chigger" Wilson; a sister, Ruby Wilson Smith and a brother, Bob Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, September 4, 2009 at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Emory. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Rodney Fleming, Johnny Williams, Sandy Loyd, Jeff Abee, Jamie Smith and Woody Robertson.
