Mrs. Ruby Riddle Gregory, age 84, widow of Ladson Gregory, of 3559 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy. Buffalo, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Spartanburg Co., March 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Faber Riddle, Sr. and Millie Smith Riddle. She was a graduate of Union High School and a retired beautician having operated Ruby's Beauty Shop. Mrs. Gregory was a member of Putman Baptist Church where she served as church organist for 55 years and was a member of the Guiding Light Sunday School class.

Surviving are a daughter: Dale Smith and husband Leon of Buffalo; one son: Harold Gregory wife Elaine Gregory of Buffalo; two sisters: Braddie Rice of Bufffalo and Margaret Gowan of Union; a brother: Faber Riddle, Jr. of High Point, NC; 5 grandsons: Chris Smith, Kevin Smith, Heath Gregory, Neil Gregory and Joey Gregory; three granddaughters: Angie Horton, Donna Smith, and Monica Gregory; 9 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law: Sherry Gregory. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by a son, Joseph Franklin Gregory and a sister, Frances Kingsmore.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Putman Baptist Church cemetery conducted by Dr. Ted Hodges.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Kevin Smith, Heath Gregory, Neil Gregory, Joey Gregory and Brandon Davis.

Visitation will be held immediately following the graveside service in the Fellowship Hall of Putman Baptist Church.

Wilma F. Howell
Union, SC

Mrs. Wilma F. Howell, age 83, wife of Ned E. Howell of 245 Ponderosa Road, Union, SC died Friday, January 29, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Howell was born in Jonesville, SC, May 12, 1926, a daughter of the late James David Fowler and Amanda Jones Fowler. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mr. & Mrs. Howell were residents of Sylvania, Ga for twenty-five years where they were active members of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Howell was a member of the Bible Witness Sunday School Class and the WMU.

Surviving in addition to her husband of sixty-seven years are two sons: Stanley Howell and wife Rita of Union and David Howell and wife Linda of Bonaire, GA; a sister, Mabel Hyder; a brother, H.D. "Sonny" Fowler both of Union; five grandchildren: Crystal Almand and husband Douglas of Statesboro, GA, Angel Howell of Stockridge, GA, Ginger Bowman and husband Greg of Duncanville, TX, Jason Howell and wife Tricia of Bufford, GA and Scott Howell of Leesburg, GA; six great-grandchildren: Laci Almand, Emily Howell, Katy Howell, Brian Howell, Caleb Bowman and Savannah Bowman and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Mr. Tommy Fowler. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Boone Morris, Wayne Hutcherson, Wayne Garner, C.W. Garner, Roy Little and Bo Hamm. Members of the Men’s Sunday School Class and Ruth Farr Sunday School Class are asked to serve as the honorary escort. The staff and nurses of Hospice Care of S.C. are asked to sit in a group.

The visitation for Mrs. Howell planed for Saturday has been postponed until 1:00 PM
at Mt. Joy Baptist Church, Sunday January 31, 2009.

Tammie W. Cureton

Ms. Judith Tammison "Tammie" Willard Cureton, age 47, formerly of Union, of 634 New Hope Church Rd., Enoree, SC, died suddenly Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Cureton was born in Union, January 17, 1963 a daughter of Bob Willard and Carol McBride Sanders. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband: David Wayne Cohen, Sr.; a daughter: Brooke Woodward and friend Kim Ellis of Findlay, Ohio; a son: Brandon Taylor and wife Holly of Laurens; two sisters: Sharon Watson and husband Terry of Woodruff and Cindy Hutcherson and husband Steve of Buffalo; a granddaughter: Alissa Taylor of Laurens; two nieces: Melissa Kendrick and Danielle Watson; and a nephew: Chad Watson. Ms. Cureton was predeceased by a son: David Wayne Cohen, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the chapel.

Kellie Robinson Bevis

Mrs. Kellie Robinson Bevis, age 96, formerly of the Toney Rd., Union, SC, widow of Robert Bevis, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Bevis was born in Gaffney, SC June 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Fred Robinson and Eva Foster Robinson. She retired from United Merchants - Union Plant and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty J. Shetley; a son, Robert J. "Bobby" DeHart and wife Esther all of Union; three sisters: Josie White of Rock Hill, Dora Holiday and Frances Peck both of Charlotte; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bevis was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Burgess; a son, Robert Lee Bevis; two sisters: Ruth Crabbs and Barbara Price and four brothers: Wilson, Thomas, Samuel and David Robinson.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 29, 2010 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Spartanburg, conducted by Betty Benton, Ruth Evans and James Holt.

Active pallbearers will be Matthew DeHart, Tim DeHart, David DeHart, Gene Lipsey, Kyle Lipsey, Brad Shetley, Joe Robinson and Mark Sanders.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday evening a the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Faye Allene White Monroe, age 77, of 116 Woodlawn Ave. Union, died Monday, January 25, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Monroe was born in Jonesville, December 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Fay Landrum and Mae Belle Vinson White. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and attended New Beginings Church of Pacolet. Mrs. Monroe retired from Milliken Company.

Surviving are two daughters: Sue Bridges of the home, and Carol Lawson and husband Robert of Union; two sisters: Hazel Feaster and husband Calvin of Columbia, and Thelma Carter and husband Jim of Greenville; two brothers: Marvin White and wife Mary Jo, and Fay White, Jr. and wife Shirley all of Pacolet; 5 grandchildren: Chad Bridges and wife Angela of the home, Michael Lawson and wife Shelley of Union, Joshua Willard of Columbia, Grace Lawson and fiancee Kenny Beaver and Matthew Lawson all of Union; three great-grandchildren: Jonathan and Christopher Lawson and Caitlyn Willard. Mrs. Monroe was predeceased by a son: Gene Monroe, three brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 28, 2010 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb and Rev. Robert Scott. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Monty Gene Smith, age 61, passed away Monday, January 25, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, June 13, 1948, a son of the late Ross and Gena Turner Smith. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of South Carolina-Columbia and Union campuses. Mr. Smith was former manager of Harry From’s Inc. in Union.

Surviving are two daughters: Annie Louise Smith and Sarah Olivia "Sally" Smith both of Greenwood; a special cousin: Evelyn Ruth Tucker of Union; two sisters: Betty S. Nave of Waycross, GA and Ann S. Hyatt and husband Wayne of West Springs; a brother: John J. Smith and wife Peggy of Union; a brother-in-law: Olin Robinson of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a sister, Romona Robinson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Unity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb and Rev. Curt Bradford. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Williams, Randy Hanvey, Allen Whitener, Tim Harrison, Hope Garner, Layton Lamb, Ben Hyatt and Roger Hyatt.

Mr. Stephen Randall Brady, age 44, of 142 Old English Rd. Union, died Saturday, January 23, 2010.

Mr Brady was born in Greensboro, NC July 23, 1965, a son of Frank and Clara Horton Treadway of Kershaw, SC. He was a graduate of Midland Valley High School and served in the US Navy. Mr. Brady was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his father and mother are three special friends: Johnny Montgomery of the home, Harold and Terry Montgomery both of Union; three sisters: Angelia Anderson and husband Andy of Jackson, Catherine Bryant and husband Bill of Kershaw, and Victoria Brady of Sacramento, CA; one brother: Kenneth Brady and wife Charlene of Sumter; his maternal grandmother: Louise Sparling of Kershaw; two special pets: Ali and Gremlin.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Dr. Anthony N. Gavalas.

Mrs. Rosinelle B."Tootsie" Stalnaker, age 82, wife of Richard "Dick" Stalnaker of 198 Frank Hill Loop Ext., Union, died Friday, January 22, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Stalnaker was born December 24, 1927, a daughter of the late Ben and Pauline McCravy Bobo. She was a graduate of Union High School and an active member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church. A beautician, Mrs. Stalnaker had worked with Mrs. Sara Allison at the Eugenia Beauty Shop.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter: Betsy Stalnaker Hobbs and husband Phil of Tocca, GA.; a son: Mike Stalnaker and wife Angie of Cumming, GA.; three grandchildren: Ashley Stalnaker, Richard Hobbs and Ben Hobbs; two sisters: Ola Cabaniss of Union, and Jennie Heuertz of Charlotte, NC.; two brothers: Bennie Bobo and Donald "Sonny" Bobo both of Union. Mrs. Stalnaker was predeceased by two sisters: Kathleen Moore and Faye Fowler, and a brother: Perry Bobo.

Herbert J. West, Jr.

Mr. Herbert J. West, Jr. age 91, formerly of 119 Hillcrest Dr., Union, widower of Autince Stevens West, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Treasure Cove Hospice House in Port St. Lucie, FL.

Mr. West was born in Sulfur Springs, SC June 22, 1918, a son of the late Herbert James West Sr. and Beatrice J. West West. He attended West Springs School and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. Mr. West was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII and a member of the American Legion. A member of Buffalo Baptist Church, he was a member of the Harold Lawson Sunday school class and had served as a Deacon and Usher.

Surviving are a son: Dean West and wife Patricia of Port St. Lucie; a brother: Donald West and wife Helen of Spartanburg; two grandsons: Troy West of Tampa, FL and Todd West and wife Barbara of Summerville; 6 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. West’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Melvin Sinclair

Mr. Melvin Sinclair, age 80 husband of Hortence Hollingsworth Sinclair, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Sinclair was born in Union, November 3, 1929 a son of the late Jefferson Davis Sinclair and Florette Smith Sinclair. He was retired as owner and operator of Sinclair Grocery and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. Mr. Sinclair was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and attended Beulah Baptist Church. He was a former Deacon of the church and was a Mason. Mr. Sinclair has served as a Union County Councilman for nine years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Melvin Lynn Sinclair of Spartanburg and Dennis Sinclair of Greenwood; two sisters: Sara Vinson and husband Jack and Dora Fleming all of Union; four grandchildren: Brandon Sinclair and wife Shaunda and Nathan Sinclair both of Greenwood, Lacy Sinclair of Columbia and Carly Sinclair of Atlanta, GA; one great-granddaughter: Mackenzie Sinclair of Greenwood. Mr. Sinclair was predeceased by a sister, Emma Mitchell and three brothers: Earl, Murl and Wilson Sinclair.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Beulah Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mark Truitt and Pastor Brandon Sinclair. Burial will be Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Sinclair’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Mr. Paul A. Barnette, age 86, of Oakmont Residental Center, widower of Gloria Little Barnette, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg..

Mr. Barnette was born in Union, SC February 19, 1923, a son of the late Horry and Virginia Davis Barnette. He was a graduate of Union High School and a retired insurance agent. A member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Barnette served as a former Deacon. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a Mason.

Survivors are a daughter: Jenny B. Crocker and husband Evans of Union; a son: Paul Little Barnette and wife Marsha of Sumter; four grandchildren: Kim B. Osborne and husband Brandon, Kacie Barnette, Mary Evans Crocker, Tyler Crocker; a special great-grandson: Caleb Osborne; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Barnette was predeceased by six brothers: George E., Earl, Clifford, Ned, Albert and Herbert Barnette.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 23, 2010 at First Baptist Church conducted by Robert Emory. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Johnnie Blackwell, age 80, of 278 Emma Cudd Rd. Spartanburg, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Blackwell was born in Cherokee County November 15, 1929 a son of the late John William and Molly Carrol Blackwell. He was a member of Light House Pentecostal Church and retired from Georgia Pacific.

Survivors are a daughter: Rhonda Sue B. Whiteside of Inman; a son: Kenneth Wayne Blackwell of Spartanburg; a daughter-in-law: Barbara Blackwell of Gaffney; a sister: Louise B. Oliver of Kings Mountain, NC., and a brother: Jimmy Blackwell of Blackburg, NC; 1 God-daughter: Brianna Tessnear; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Mr. Blackwell was predeceased by a daughter Shirley Blackwell, a son Jerry Blackwell, sisters and brothers: William, Albert, Rose Annie Mae, Victor and Viola Blackwell.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church conducted by Rev. Ray Southerland and Bishop Paul Tessnear. Burial will follow at first Baptist Church of Pacolet.

Kathryn B. Gallman
Jonesville, S.C.

Mrs. Kathryn Brown Gallman, age 87, widow of Boyd Keith Gallman of 844 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, passed away, Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Oakmont Nursing Center.

Mrs. Gallman was born in Pacolet, September 27, 1922 a daughter of the late Johnny Brown and Mary Williams Brown Byars. She was retired from Smith Jewelery in Union and was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the Agnes Rodgers Circle. Mrs. Gallman was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Mark Gallman and wife Julie of the home; 9 grandchildren: Jimmy Wayne Gallman, Jr. and wife Kathy, Dr. Tamela Keller and husband Dr. Kevin Keller, Jamie Gallman and wife DeCole, Pamela Brown and husband Palmer, Dickey Fowler and wife Kaye, Hal Fowler and wife Bridget, and Tara Farr and husband Kevin, James Sargent and Jordan Sargent; 12 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law: Gail Gallman of Jonesville; a nephew: Terry Holmes and 1 great-niece and 2 great-nephews. Mrs. Gallman was predeceased by a daughter Mary Keith Gallman Fowler and two sons: Jimmy Wayne Gallman, Sr. and Benjamin Thomas Gallman.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. James Ivey and

Rev. David Clyburn. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Matthew Brent Addis

Matthew Brent Addis, age 25, of 1154 S. Jonesville Hwy., Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Matt was born in Spartanburg, August 16, 1984 a son of Douglas Brent Addis and Vicki Burgess Addis of the home. Matt was an avid hunter and fisherman who always had a BIG smile, a heart of gold and brought GREAT JOY and loyal devotion to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother: Christopher Blaine Addis and wife Amber; two nieces Tristen and Taylor Cudd all of the home; his grandparents; Hattie Addis and the late Grady "Boots" Addis, Larkin and "Toots" Burgess, and Pauline Turner all of Jonesville; an aunt: Dianne A. West and husband Rev. Alan West; a special uncle: Darrell Addis and wife Donna; two uncles: Mike Burgess and wife Gigi and Dennis Burgess; a number of cousins and a multitude of friends. Matt was predeceased by a son, Andrew Brent Addis.

A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 22, 2010 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess and Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Raymond Milne, age 67, husband of Gloria Jean Craven Milne of 206 Kelly Rd., Union, died Monday, January 18, 2010 at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Milne was born in Detroit, MI, October 12, 1942, a son of the late James and Evelyn Lovelace Milne. He a graduate of Western High School in Detroit and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Milne was formerly employed with Webb Forging.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: James C. Mr. Sailors was born in Cleveland NC April 24, 1942, a son of Ralph and Margaret Virginia Hawkins Sailors. He was the owner and operator of Sailors Roofing and attended Welcome Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Elizabeth Cribbs of Landrum, and Jeannie Parkins of Union; three sons: Thomas Sailors, Jr., John Cribbs and Peter Cribbs all of Union; six grandchildren: Dillon Cribbs reared in the home, Adam Parkins, Brandon Parkins, Devin Cribbs, Jay Cribbs and Alexis Cribbs; two sisters: Kathy Donnon of Laurens, and Joyce Arnold of Union; one brother: Caroll Sailors of Union. Mr. Sailors was predeceased by a sister: Pat Lovings and a brother: Dennis Sailors.

Mrs. Woolen was born in Union, February 19, 1919 a daughter of the late Robert and Julia Sprouse Jones. She was retired from Milliken Co, Monarch Plant and was an active member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.

Surviving are a daughter Paula W. Jackson and husband Jay with whom she made her home in Chesnee; four grandchildren: Brittney Cromer, Briana Cromer, Bethany Cromer and Brendon Cromer.

Mrs. Wages was born in Union, June 14, 1933 a daughter of the late Herman and Clara Prince Jennings. She was formerly employed with Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and with Michelin Tire in Spartanburg. Mrs. Wages was a member of the Greater Union Church and was first married to the late Johnny Carl Bevis.

Survivors include a daughter: Bessie Brown and husband Tommy; three sons: Dean Bevis and wife Beth, Dennis Bevis and wife Mary all of Union and Bruce Bevis of the home; two sisters: Bessie Duncan and Betty Jean Hawkins of Union; one brother: Billy Jennings of Pauline; 8 grandchildren; a special great-granddaughter, Brooke McDowell of Union and 17 other great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Splawn was born in Shelby, NC, January 23, 1921 a daughter of the late George Curtis Patterson and Matrona Rippy Patterson. She was a graduate of No.3 High School in Earl, NC and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church in Jonesville. Mrs. Splawn was a homemaker and worked along side her husband in farming.

Surviving are two daughters: Janice S. Hutcherson and husband Wayne and Dorothy S. Gallman and husband Everette all of Union; two granddaughters: Jennifer Wright and Audrey Robinson both of Union and a grandson: Ashley Gallman of Charleston; three great-grandchildren: Amelia Wright, Thomas Robinson, and Austin Gallman; a special friend: Margaret Willard of Union. Mrs. Splawn was predeceased by two brothers, John William Patterson and Boyd Patterson both from Shelby, NC.

Mrs. Montez Whitehead lovingly known as "Mrs. Merc", age 96, widow of John Daniel "Dan" Whitehead, Sr., of 4470 Buffalo West Springs Hwy. died Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Park Place Nursing Center in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Whitehead was born in West Springs, September 5, 1913, a daughter of the late Clarence and Laura West Alexander. She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Mary Sue Keith Sunday School class. Mrs. Whitehead was a graduate of West Springs High School and a graduate of Robinson Business College in Spartanburg. She worked in the auditors office in Spartanburg County and also worked along side her husband at Whitehead Mercantile. Mrs. Whitehead was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons: John Daniel "Danny" Whitehead, Jr. and wife Ginger Allen Whitehead of West Spring and their children Shelley Alexandra Whitehead and Seth Daniel Whitehead; and Dr. Thomas Alexander Whitehead of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gregory was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Jackson Gregory.

Mrs. Brawley was born in Buffalo, SC November 14, 1930, a daughter of the late Commandore Bradford Massey and Fannie Coleman Brewington. She was a retired Textile worker and was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a nephew, Van Tucker and special friend Robin; a step-son, Chris Reece all of Union and a great-nephew, Benji Tucker of Germany. Mrs. Brawley was predeceased by a son, Chris Brawley; a sister, Iva Lee Tucker; a brother, Raymond Massey and a step-father, Johnny Lee Brewington.

Mr. Ivey was born in Union County, SC October 25, 1952, a son of Kathleen Justice Ivey of Union and the late James William Ivey. He was employed with Piedmont Concrete and was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Vonda Hummell of Cranberry, PA and Vickie Hyatt and husband Roger of West Springs; a son, Gary Morgan and wife Sheila of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren: Will Morgan and wife Summer, Hunter Morgan, Erin Morgan all of Spartanburg, Catherine Hummell, Joe Hummell both of Pittsburg, PA, Avery Hyatt and Shelby Hyatt both of West Springs; one great-grandchild; three aunts, an uncle and several cousins.

Mr. LeBron Burns, age 81, husband of Billie Rae Cobb Burns, of 4925 Jonesville- Lockhart Hwy., died Friday, January 8, 2010 in Wallace Thomsom Hospital.

Mr. Burns was born in Lockhart ,June 6, 1928, a son of the late Walter L. Burns and Vera Carter Burns.

Mr. Burns was a retired supervisor with Lockhart Power Co. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and continued his education through training and seminars with his job.

Mr. Burns was very athletic in school and played minor league baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a former member of SCNG- Lockhart and a lifetime Mason. An avid Gamecock fan, he was a member of the Union County Gamecock Club.

Mr. Burns was a member and trustee of Lockhart United Methodist Church where he taught the Men’s Bible class and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family; he was a beloved husband and father.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty five years are two daughters; Adair Burns of the home and Melanie B. Brewington and husband Ray of Lockhart; several nieces and nephews and special pet companions, three kitties and two dogs. He was predeceased by a brother Walter A. Burns.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P M, Monday January 11, 2010 at the Lockhart United Methodist Church, conducted by Mr. Merritt Wentz, Rev. Rev. Gary Byrd and Rev. Phillip L. Bostrom.

Ms. Rogers was retired from United Merchants, Union Mill and was the oldest member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter; Brenda R. Pridemore and husband, Franklin of Union; a sister Jackie Cohen of Spartanburg; a sister-in-law; Faye Rogers of Union, two granddaughters; Robin Pridemore of Chesnee and Tracey Smith of Union, one grandson; Dell Pridemore and wife Ava of Duncan, four great grandchildren; Aaron and Andrew Pridemore of Duncan and Chelsey and Cole Smith of Union. Mr. Bradley was born in Tunnelton, West Va, a son of the late Ross Bradley and Artie Wolf Bradley. He worked as a Longshoreman in Baltimore, MD and was a Veteran of the Army Air Corp having served in World War II.

Surviving are three sons: Mitch and Jennifer Bradley of Chapin, Myron Bradley of Ark., and Randy Bradley of Baltimore, MD; a daughter, Cathy; two sisters: Mary Lorentze and Joan Henderson and husband Jack; a brother, Donald Bradley and wife Kay and five grandchildren: Heather, Dustin, Brittany, Randi and Abbey. Mrs. Williams was born in Jonesville, SC November 12, 1934, a daughter of the late Curtis Vinson and Alma Ivey Vinson. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School. Mrs. Williams was an active member of Gilead Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class and the WMU. She taught Bible School, was a Sunday School Teacher, Church Training Leader and Nursery Coordinator for many years. She was a loving and faithful wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband of fifty years are three sons: Douglas Williams and companion Karen Watson, Gene Williams and wife Angie and Paul Williams all of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Regina Williams, Daniel Williams, Dillon Williams, Casey Williams and a special granddaughter, Allyssa Morris; a brother, Clyde Vinson and wife Faye of Jonesville; a sister, Lucille Sizemore of Spartanburg and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Scarlett Burgess "Sister" Roberts age 44, wife of Ricky Roberts of 547 Littlejohn Rd., Jonesville, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Medical University in Charleston after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Roberts was born in Union, February 21, 1965 a daughter of Virginia Turner Burgess of Jonesville and the late L.J. Burgess. She was a 1983 graduate of Jonesville High School and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Roberts worked along with her husband as an office manager with Synergy Systems in Gastonia, NC. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and friend.

Surviving in addition to her mother and husband are two sons: Chaz Lee Robert and Michael Vanderford both of the home; her step-father: Frank L. Roberts; her step-mother: Kay Burgess both of Jonesville; a sister: Angela B. Jones and husband Danny and their daughter, Jada of Buffalo; a brother: Troy Burgess and wife Candie and their daughter, Shelly of Jonesville; a step-sister: Cindy Roberts and her fiancee Jimmy Smith of Jonesville; a step-brother: Shane Duckett and wife Kelly and their daughters, Morgan and Delaney Duckett of Union; a sister-in-law: Lillie Roberts and her children, Kenneth H. Roberts, Jr and Summer Roberts of Union. Mrs. Roberts was predceased by a brother-in-law: Kenny Roberts, her mother-in-law: Georgia Roberts and her maternal grandparents: George "Shorty" and Bertha Turner.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Wayne Parker, John Young, Danny Jones, Jimmy Smith, Tommy Millwood and Terry Heatherly.

Joseph Eugene "Gene" Edwards, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. Joseph Eugene "Gene" Edwards, Jr, age 89, husband of Frances Ferguson Edwards of Union was taken peacefully by the angels to his heavenly home on January 7, 2010 after a brief illness. He was a faithful and active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and very family oriented.

Gene was the son of Joseph Eugene Edwards, Sr and Mattie Lake Edwards. He is survived by three daughters: Jean Edwards Byrd (Jerry), Martha Ellen Edwards (David Block), Susan Edwards Logan (Jeff) and daughter-in-law, Susie Gilliland Edwards; and two: and his two sisters: Frances E. Outz and husband Marett and Martie E. Buerkle and Dr. Jack Buerkle. His only son, Robert Michael Edwards predeceased him in August 2009. He, also, is survived by seven grandchildren: Jennifer Gault Brown, Tamara Gault Yates, Christy Byrd Todd, Melissa Byrd Yates, Zachary Byrd, Tray Duncan and Reggie Duncan and thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was a World War II Veteran, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the 513th Parachute Regiment of the 17th Airborne Division. He made his first jump across the Rhine River into Germany on March 24, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart and European Service Ribbon with three battle stars.

Returning home, Gene worked one year for the Postal Service and retired in 1984 from Milliken & Co. after thirty-five years of service. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Clemson University.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 7:00-8:30 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Family Life Center. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Tommy McManess. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Chaplain Major Kelvin Todd with Military Honors.

Mr. Roy C. McSwain, age 88, formerly of 309 Maple Street, Union, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Oakmont of Union Residential.

Mr. McSwain was born in Lockhart, SC December 26, 1921, a son of the late Victor Lee McSwain and Maude Vanderford McSwain. He retired from Milliken & Co - Lockhart Plant and was a Veteran of the US Army, having served during World War II. Mr. McSwain was a member of the Union Church of God and the American Legion Post 22. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. McSwain was twice married; first to the late Julia Margaret Meeks McSwain and second to the late Mildred McSwain.

Surviving are a daughter, Dianne M. Andrews and husband Rev. Kenneth Andrews of Tuscaloosa, AL; three grandchildren: Micah Ryan Andrews and wife Karie, Joel O’Neal Andrews and Bethany Dianne Jones and husband Jason; two great-grandchildren: Katherine Olivia Andrews and Ella Kate Andrews; numerous nieces and nephews and a special care-giver, Evelyn Alman. Mr. McSwain was predeceased by five sisters: Myrtle Bentley, Pauline Swanger, Guynita Sink, Helen Childers and Loretta Steen and four brothers: Buford, Arville, Otis McSwain and Lee McSwain, Jr.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bill Vanderford, Rev. Micah Andrews and Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Miss Taylor was born in Holly Springs, SC, April 25, 1922, a daughter of the late Liam and Nellie Horton Taylor. She was a member of the Salvation Army Church in Union and formerly employed with United Merchants-Union Plant.

Surviving are a sister: Janie Taylor of the home; six nephews: Leonard Bradburn and wife Sherry of the home, Wayne Taylor and wife Ann of Pauline, David Bradburn and wife Gail of Gaffney, Jerry Bradburn and wife Laura, Ricky Taylor and wife Julie all of Union, and Toney Taylor and wife Jessica of Greenville; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Miss Taylor was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Bradburn.

Mrs. Wilma Ford Mayes, age 89, widow of Charles f. Mayes, formerly of Union, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 5, 2010.

Mrs. Mayes was born in Buffalo, February 7, 1920 a daughter of the late Ernest T. and Lula Mae Douglas Ford. A veteran of the US Army, Mrs. Mayes served during WWII and received the American Theater Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina having earned an Associate Degree and Bachlors Degree. Mrs. Mayes was listed in Who’s Who’s Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, a recipient of the Internal Sports Award and was on the Dean’s List, President’s Honor Roll and Student of the Month while attending USC.

She was a retired educator having taught in Union Co. Public Schools, Union Academy and the University of South Carolina, Union. Mrs. Mayes was a member of Joneville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and was a MYF Leader.

Surviving are two daughters: Gilda Branch and husband Jerry of Raleigh, NC and Caroline Gossett and husband Rick of Boiling Springs with whom she made her home; one son: Charles Mayes, Jr. and wife Rhonda of Jonesville; a son-in-law; Andy Anderson of Hillsboro, NC; two sisters: Aileen Crocker and husband Forest and Barbara Puckett and husband Robert all of Union; three grandchildren: Carie Anderson of Hillsboro, NC, Chaz Mayes of Spartanburg and Nicholas Mayes of Jonesville; two great-grandchildren: Kyara Leigh Anderson and Jordin Anderson both of Hillsboro, NC; and special caregivers: Lillian Rodger, Lisa Hipp, Tina Byrd, and Virginia Aspy of Boiling Springs. Mrs. Mayes was predeceased by two sisters, Inez Sumner and Jessie Wilbanks.

Mr. Jimmy Wayne Gallman, age 70, husband of Gail Vaughan Gallman, of 140 Spencer Rd. Jonesville, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, January 5, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Gallman was born in Jonesville, September 4, 1939, a son of Kathryn Brown Gallman of Jonesville and the late Boyd Keith Gallman. He was member Jonesville United Methodist Church, a mason with the Gaffney Masonic Lodge, and was a retired from B and G Chrysler- Plymouth in Gaffney. Mr. Gallman was a 1957 graduate of Jonesville High School and earned an Associate Degree from Spartanburg Methodist College.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter: Dr. Tamela G. Keller and husband Dr. Kevin Keller of Greenville; two sons: Wayne Gallman,.Jr. and wife Kathy of Jonesville; and James Keith Gallman and wife DeCole of Union; one brother; D.Mark Gallman and wife Julie of Jonesville; 7 grandchildren: Garrett and Kathryn Elise Keller, Rachel and Jeb Gallman, Makayla Thompson and Chris and Danielle Moore; two great-grandchildren: Layla Moore and Trevor James Clark; two god-children: Brandy Gutierrez and Samantha Birch; and a very special friend, Lonnie Gist

Mrs. Bolick was born in Renno, SC, a daughter of the late Johnny Franklin Etters and Judy Revis Etters and was a former textiles worker.

Surviving are two sons: Martin D. Bolick of Joanna and Michael S. Bolic of Clinton; three sisters: Patricia Cates of Clinton, Dianne F. Wooten of Laurens and Pamela Sue Maples of TN; one brother: Johnny Travis Etters of Tampa FL.

John Timothy Howard

Mr. John Timothy Howard, age 52 of 105 Windy Rush Road, Spartanburg SC, widower of June Fuller Howard, died suddenly at his home.

Mr. Howard was born in Union, SC August 20, 1957, a son of the late Ralph H. and Faye Eubanks Howard. He was a graduate of Union High School and University of South Carolina. Mr. Howard was employed with Spartanburg Technical College and an avid Gamecock fan. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors are two brothers: Michael R. Howard of Columbia; and Roger H. Howard and wife Carolyn of Lockhart; a close friend of the family, Joe Bell of Columbia and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Holler was born in Sylvia., NC, October 15, 1925, a daughter of the late James and Ida May Ashe Payne. She was a graduate of Webster High School in Jackson Co. and was a caregiver with Hospice in Union. Mrs. Holler was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are one son: Guy Holler of Buffalo; three nieces: Tammy Turner of Quincy, FL, Linda Rivenbark of Charlotte, NC, and Kathleen O’Rourke Matthews of Atlanta, GA; and one nephew: Michael Turner of Vale, NC. Mrs. Holler was predeceased by a daughter: Sandra Holler, a son: James Wall and a grandson: Jamie O’Rourke.

Mrs. Bertha Rebecca Patterson Turner, age 95 of 108 Knitting Mill Street, Jonesville, SC, widow of George Washington Turner, Sr., died Monday, January 4, 2010.

Mrs. Turner was born in Union County, SC, September 1, 1914, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Patterson and Maude Franklin Patterson. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Pacolet. Mrs. Turner was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters: Hazel Millwood of the home and a special friend Michael Horne and Virginia Burgess and a special friend Buddy Roberts of Jonesville; three sons: Noah Sonny Turner and wife Rebecca of Union, George Washington "GW" Turner, Jr and wife Joyce and Lloyd "Nig" Turner and wife Thelma all of Jonesville; daughters-in law: Jeanette Turner and Peggy Turner both of Jonesville; three sisters-in-law: Pauline Turner, Dot Gossett both of Jonesville and Sybil Bobo and brother-in-law, Claude both of Union; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Margaret Ann Steen, age 80, formerly of Lockhart SC, widow of Fleetwood Leonard Steen died of natural causes at Agape Senior in Rock Hill on Monday, January 4, 2010.

Mrs. Steen was born in Lockhart, SC November 11, 1929, a daughter of the late Ransom L. Brank and Idella Smith Brank. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School; a long-time member of Lockhart Methodist Church, a founding member of the rejuvenated Baptist Church of Cheshire, CT, and most recently attended Eastview Baptist Church in Rock Hill. She was an active and inspired leader and helper in the church and community--a volunteer in countless charitable activities. She sang in many choirs and taught Sunday School her entire life. Professionally, she was a successful office manager at numerous companies in both Connecticut and South Carolina.

Surviving are two daughters, two sons, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren: daughter Beth Walker and husband Brian of Rock Hill; daughter Ann Evans and husband Stu of Oregon City, OR; son David Steen of Wallingford, CT; and son Robert Steen and wife Eaddie of Honolulu, HI; grandchildren are Maggie, Sarah Lynn and Grace Walker of Rock Hill, and Sarah Loftis and husband Erin, Jessa and Bekah Evans, all from Oregon; great grandchildren are Rocco and Ryder Loftis from Oregon. Mrs. Steen was the last survivor of twelve Brank siblings born and raised in a simple home off Hiway 9 at Mt Tabor. She will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Lockhart Methodist Church conducted by Mr. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Blackwell was born in Union County, SC July 2, 1919, a daughter of the late Lewis Parker and Jennie Addis Parker. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from the Label Corporation in Jonesville. Mrs. Blackwell was an active member of Gilead Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class as long as her health permitted.

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie McNeace and husband Terry of Jonesville; a sister, Jenelle Ivey of Winston Salem, NC; a very special little boy, Isaac Thomas Lawson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Lawton Neely and Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Curtis S. "Sammy" Scott, Jr, age 53, of 3391 Buffalo West Springs Hwy, Buffalo, SC died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Scott was born in Union, SC May 7, 1956, a son of Eleanor Miller Youngblood of Buffalo and the late Curtis S. Scott, Sr. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a construction worker. Mr. Scott was a member of Putman Baptist Church and the U.S. Sportsman’s Hunt Club.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Ricky Scott and wife Glynnette of Buffalo; a sister, Pam Gilliam of Spartanburg; a step-father, Harold Youngblood of Buffalo; a step-sister, Deanna Arnold and husband Dan of Union; a step-brother, Terry Youngblood and wife Diane of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Freeman, Curtis Gregory, Scott Childers, Leon Smith, Kevin Smith and Kevin Youngblood.

Visitation will be held in the social hall of the church immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3692 Buffalo West Springs Hwy, Buffalo, SC 29321.

The family is at the home of his mother, Eleanor and Harold Youngblood, 3387 West Springs Hwy, Buffalo.
