Ada Hames Long

Ada Hames Long, age 97, formerly of Jonesville, passed away, Monday, May 31, 2010.

Ms. Long was born in Jonesville, December 8, 1912, a daughter of the late Edward and Fannie Sharpe Long. A graduate of Jonesville High School and Winthrop College, Ms. Long was a retired school teacher and a life long member of Gilead Baptist Church where she formerly served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Choir.

Ms. Long was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Lawton Neely. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 3:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

Cathy B. Boulware
Buffalo, S.C.

Cathy Barbarann Boulware, age 59 of 208 Gin Circle, Buffalo, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at her home after a sudden illness.

Ms. Boulware was born in Buffalo, October 29, 1950 a daughter of the late Fannie Ruth Schooner Boulware. She was of the Baptist faith and loved to crochet and knit.

Surviving are two uncles: Rion Boulware and wife Thelma of Buffalo and Grady Boulware of the home; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: David Boulware, Jerry Boulware, Bobby Boulware, Matthew Boulware and Brian Vinson.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ginger Craig Garner, age 58, wife of Ed Garner of 146 Farrow Rd., Jonesville, SC died Friday, May 28, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Garner was the daughter of Arthur William “Bill Craig, Jr. and the late Vivian Reynolds Craig. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a Registered Nurse having worked at Mary Black Memorial Hospital and Magnolia Place. Mrs. Garner was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a son, John Craig Wilkins and wife Chrissy; a brother, Patrick O'Neal Craig and wife Pam; a step-mother, Vivian Rochester Craig; a mother-in-law,

Louise Gregory Sanders all of Jonesville; sisters-in-law: Sonja Echeverri and husband Omar and children, Christopher and Mary Beth of Roebuck and Judean Cohen and husband Michael of Spartanburg; niece, Heather Bailey; two nephews, Zach Bailey and wife Tonya Craig all of Rock Hill and James Edward Wilkins, II and wife Jennifer and their children RJ and AJ and loving animals Reilly, Katie Craig Garner and Polly. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a sister, Jill Craig Prince.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM, Sunday May 30, 2010 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown.

Mrs. Maggie K. Dickerson, age 91, wife of James F. Dickerson of 296 Meansville Rd., Brittany Manor Apartments, Union, SC died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Dickerson was born in Union County, SC Febuary 5, 1919, a daughter of the late Rufus Mabry and Minnie Henley Mabry. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School; was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Dickerson was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Jim Dickerson and wife Amelia of Moore. Mrs. Dickerson was predeceased by a brother, J.G. Mabry.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Josh Freeman and Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Les Singleton, Jimmy Mabry, Ricky Mode, Noah Greene, Gene Gilbert and Ken Clark. The nurses and staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held in the church 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service.

Mrs. Frances L. Chambers, age 81 of 629 Rice Avenue Ext.,West End Manor Apartments, Apt. 4B, Union, SC died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Chambers was born in Buffalo, SC January 23, 1929, a daughter of the late James Normen Chambers and Anna Mitchell Chambers. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Sylvia Reynolds and friend Ricky Sprouse, Sara Jane Parks and husband Mike all of Union and Gwendolyn Fisher and husband Charles of Buffalo; a son, Phillip Fisher and wife Lyndia of Buffalo; a sister, Beuna Inman and husband James of Union; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Chambers; five grandchildren: Sherry Johnson, Johnny Fisher both of Buffalo, Stacy Gibson, Shane Parks and Maxie Reynolds all of Union and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chambers was predeceased by two daughters, Paula and Dorothy Chambers; a grandson, Christopher Fisher; a sister, Betty Rose and six brothers: Loyd Chambers, John Chambers, James Norman Chambers, Jr, George C. Chambers, Walter M. Chambers and Joe D. Chambers.

Barbara Allen “Bobbie” Foster

Mrs. Barbara Allen “Bobbie”Foster, age 79, formerly of Jonesville, widow of Walter E. Foster, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Valley Falls Terrace.

Mrs. Foster was born in Jonesville, SC April 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Charles Dixon and Margaret Ester Pruitt Dixon. She was a member of Truth Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are four daughters; Loree Johnson (Harold) of Roebuck, Jean Childers (Randy) of Greenwood, Pamela Duncan (Donnie) of Roebuck and Cindy Harris (Tony) of Union; a son, Lee Foster (Debbie) of Cowpens; a sister, Dorothy Jackson of Spartanburg; a brother, Charles L. Dixon of Blacksburg; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Foster was predeceased by a son, Bobby Allen;a grandson, Chris Gossett and a brother, Grover Dixon.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Joey Turner. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bobby J. Bishop, age 75, husband of Reba Grady Bishop of 4660 Lassister Mill Rd., Asheboro, NC, 27205, passed away, Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Mr. Bishop was born in Union Co., September 2, 1934 a son of the late Victor D. Bishop and Kathryn Crook Bishop. He was a retired supervisor for Metals Inc. in Rocky Mount, NC and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Bishop was a Baptist and attended Oakhurst Baptist Church in Asheboro.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a nephew: Vic Bishop and wife Donna of Enoree and several other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carroll Caldwell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Robert Ray Biggerstaff, age 54, husband of Mary Ann Millwood Biggerstaff of 193 Oakland Rd., Union, SC died suddenly Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Biggerstaff was born in Union, SC April 13, 1956, a son of John Alvin Biggerstaff, Sr and Frances Thomas Biggerstaff of Union. He was employed with Sonoco Products for twenty-four years and was a veteran of the US Navy having served in the Vietnam War. Mr. Biggerstaff was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are two sons: Grady Daniel Biggerstaff and wife Jessica of Union and William Ray Biggerstaff who is currently serving in the US Army in Germany; a sister, Evelyn B. King of Easley; a brother, John A. Biggerstaff, Jr of Richburg, SC; a grandson, Daniel Gage Biggerstaff of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Betty Jean Randolph, age 60 of 305 Richards St., Union, formerly of Cross Hill, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Ms. Randolph was born in Massillon, OH, April 19, 1950, a daughter of the late Beede "Bud" W. Randolph and Faye Kathleen Lyons Randolph. She was a 20 year retiree from the US Navy having worked in communications and served as a company commander. During her military career, she served on bases in Maryland, Chicago, Florida, Iceland, Bermuda, Hawaii and Diego Garcia. Afterwards, she was an employee with Timken in Clinton. Ms. Randolph was and avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.

Surviving are four sisters: Sandy Fink and husband Dick of Prescott Valley, AZ, Gail Janaiak and husband Richie of Massillon, OH, Lynn Miller of Cross Hill, and Kathy Gognat of Indianapolis, IN; three brothers: Bruce Randolph of Camden, AK, Greg Randolph of Massillon OH and Ron Randolph and wife Sharon of Chicago, IL; a special friend of 17 years Linda Arthur of Union; her "adopted parents": Maria Arthur and the late Doil Arthur of Union; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members, the Arthur family and the Gibbs family, her beloved pets; and many other special friends. Ms. Randolph was predeceased by three brothers, Gerald, Donnie, and Keith Randolph, and one sister, Meeda Faye White.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, May 21, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Tommy McManess. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery will Full Military Honors.

Mrs. Peggy Lee Bettis, wife of C. Marvin Bettis of 202 Glendale Rd., Union, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 at Spartanburg Restorative Care following a prolonged illness.

Mrs. Bettis was born in Union, July 3, 1928, a daughter of the late William Minter Lee and Ada Adams Lee. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Limestone College. Mrs. Bettis was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Union for over fifty-six years and served as Executive Director of United Way of Union County for over fifteen years. Mrs. Bettis was predeceased by her brother, Robert E. Lee.

Surviving in addition to her husband Charles Marvin Bettis are a daughter, Mary Lee Cantey of Spartanburg and her two children, Field Cantey of Charlotte, NC and Lee Cantey of Spartanburg; a son, Charles M. Bettis, Jr. of Columbia; three sisters-in-law: Patty Osborne Lee of Columbia, Catherine Bettis Flenniken and Louise Bettis Piazza and husband of Kingsport, TN; two nieces: Anne Lee of Charleston and Cathy Piazza Liley of Kingsport, TN and three nephews: Louis Lee of Newport News, VA, Andy Piazza of Atlanta, GA and Matthew Piazza of Herndon, VA.

Ora Dean Varner Sanders, age 87, formerly of Union, widow of Hurbert Sanders died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at White Oak Manor in Tryon, NC.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Union, October 14, 1922, a daughter of the late Smith and Nina McAbee Varner. She was retired from Excelsior Mill. Mrs. Sanders was first married to the late Durwood J. Maness.

Surviving are a daughter Frances Maness, of Spartanburg; a son: Ronald Maness and his wife Sandy of Landrum; a half-brother: Melvin "Buck" Lancaster of Union; 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Leonard O’Shields, Sr.

Mr. Leonard F. O’Shields, Sr., age 92, widower of Lillie Moore O’Shields of 123 Phillips Rd., Union, SC, died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. O’Shields was born April 15, 1918, in Union, SC., a son of the late Newton P. O’Shields and Eliza Lewis O’Shields. He was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. O’Shields retired from the maintenance department of the Milliken Company- Monarch Plant after many years of service.

Survivors in addition to his wife are a daughter: Linda O. Carter and husband Floyd of Union; two sons: Frank O’Shields and wife Ramoth and Larry K. O’Shields and wife Jerry all of Union; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mr. O’Shields was predeceased by a two brothers: Lewis O’Shields and Landrum O’Shields; two sisters: Mary O. Davis and Lois O. Crocker; two granddaughters: Jennifer Fowler and Jan Hines; and a son-in-law: James "Jimbo" Fowler.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM today at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Lee and Rev. Brad Goodale. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

Mrs. Elsie Ward Jordan, age 89, formerly of Farm Hill Rd., Jonesville, passed away, Friday, May 14, 2010 at NHC-Mauldin.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Jonesville, September 20, 1920, a daughter of the late James W. and Mae Storey Ward. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Pacolet United Methodist Church. Mrs. Jordan was an artist who loved painting nature and the outdoors.

Surviving are three sons: Jimmy Jordan and wife Linda of Pacolet, Bill Jordan and wife Rosie of Dacusville and Dan Jordan and wife Micki of Powdersville; two sisters: Margaret Hyatt of Greenville and Sybil Ward of Spartanburg; one brother: Albert Ward of Rock Hill; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Jordan was predeceased by four brothers: James I. Ward, Robert W. Ward, Clyde D. Ward and Wallace Ward and one sister: Grace Ward.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel. Burial will be in Pacolet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Marion Eugene Bailey
Jonesville, SC

Marion Eugene Bailey, 79, of 618 New Hope Church Road, husband of Mae Gossett Bailey, died Sunday, May 9 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Bailey was born on Sept. 19, 1930 in the Goshen Hill Community of Union County, a son of the late Charles Preston Bolts Bailey and Mattie Louise Willard Bailey. He was a graduate of Union High School and Cecil’s Business College and returned to his beloved Union County to work at United Merchants and Manufacturers, Union Plant. He retired as plant manager and after the fire that destroyed Union Mill he served as chairman of the reunion committee and oversaw the planning and development of the memorial site that overlooks the old mill property. He loved the people of the Union Mill family and thought of them as his own family.

Mr. Bailey was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative committee and was chairman for many years. As long as his health permitted he taught the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class and was church lay leader. He was a member of the Rocky Creek Water Company Board from its inception and served for many years as its president. He loved working on his family farm and raising cattle as long as his health permitted. He as an avid fan of Clemson University football and was a member of the IPTAY Club. Mr. Bailey was a member of the SC National Guards-Union Unit serving for fourteen years, rising to the rank of Supply Sargent. He loved the people of Union County and was always proud to call Union County his home.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife of 48 years are a daughter, Donna Bailey Long and her husband, James of Jonesville; four grandchildren: Charlie, Will, Patrick and Bailey Long; a sister-in-law, Marianne Hoagland (Polly) Bailey of Knoxville, Tenn.; a nephew, Bobby Bailey and his wife, Merrie, of Union; and a niece, Karen Bailey Cobb and husband, Frank of Knoxville. Mr. Bailey was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Bailey; and three brothers: Charles Bolt Bailey, Paul Willard Bailey and Morris Sanders Bailey.

Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Ivey, Rev. David Caughman and Rev. David Clyburn. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Robert F. "Scot" McClellan
Union, S.C.

Mr. Robert F. "Scot" McClellan, age 62, of 143 Wilson Rd., husband of Susan Marie McClellan, passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010 at his home

A native of Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Hatch McClellan and had made his home in Union for the past five years. Mr. McClellan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and had continued his studies toward his Master’s Degree. He was retired from the US Army after 32 years having served a tour of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, the VFW and Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. He served as adjutant of the American Legion Post #22 of Union. Before coming to Union, McClellan was owner of his own business in PA called McClellan’s Pallet Recyclers.

Mr. McClellan was very active with the Boy Scouts of America. He had earned his Eagle Scout badge and was leader of Troop # 120 in Union. He also was program director for the Cub Scout Day Camp. He was and avid animal lover and owned horses, dogs and cats that he and his wife had rescued. Mr. McClellan made friends easily with whom ever he met no matter where he was.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Nicole Elizabeth McClellan of the home and Heather Ivey and husband John of Altoona, PA; a sister: Vera Downs of Altoona, PA; a grandson: Jarrett Ivey of the home and 11 other grandchildren; a nephew: Jason Downs and wife Valerie and their son, Alex all of Altoona.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Wednesday evening, May 12, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Charlie Mae Knox Kelly, age 86, widow of the late J.E. Kelly, Jr. of 156 Woodwinds Trail died Sunday, May 9, 2010.

Mrs. Kelly was born in Union, SC., February 20, 1924, a daughter of the late Charley Knox and Ada Hodge Knox. She was an active member of Bethlehem Methodist Church and attended the Senior Citizens Center at Lockhart. Mrs. Kelly was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Survivors are three daughters: Peggy Osment and husband James, Mary Mullinax and husband Jimmy all of Gaffney; and Shirley Ford and husband Bob of Boiling Springs; one son: Eddie Kelly and wife Betty of Union; one brother: Rev. Sam Knox of Kentucky; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Christopher Greene and Rev. Sam Knox. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Catoe, Ray Upchurch, Lee Sanders, Dean Upchurch, Robby Ford and Tony Pettit. Honorary pallbearers will be the A.G. Carter Sunday School Class.

Visitation will held Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Judy Burris Gillian age 61, widow of Calvin Gillian, of Spartanburg, passed away Sunday May 9, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Mrs. Gillian was born in Union, December 14, 1948, a daughter of Minnie Austin Knox of Union and the late Lloyd Calvin Knox, Sr. She was a certified nursing assistant and a member of Hebron Baptist Church. Mrs. Gillian was a previous patient of DCI in Union and Spartanburg and was a very strong woman through her illness.

Surviving are three daughters: Grace Burris and fiancee Robert Jeter with whom Mrs. Gillian made her home, Judy Lynn Fox and husband Jerry of Buffalo and April Hicks and fiancee Michael Beaty of Chester; one son: Neal Burris and fiancee Kimberly Voiselle; one brother: Nim Knox of Union; a special niece: Laura Knox Parris of Union; grandchildren: Brandon Turner, Brittany Turner, Amanda Fox, Janet Fox, Jerry Fox, Jr., Torie Painter, Joseph Langston, Americus Covington, Jaded Jeter, Sabrina Inman, Hunter Inman, Braxton Hicks, Noah Voiselle, Abby Voiselle and Myah Voiselle, and numerous great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gillian was predeceased by brother, Lloyd Calvin Knox, Jr and an infant brother, Larry Knox.

Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Roy Lowe and Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Neal Burris, Michael Beaty, Brandon Turner, Jerry Fox, Jr., Eddie Hutchinson, Robert Jeter, Brandon Moore and Michael Trantham.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 4:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dorsey "Dot" Comer Farr, age 93, of 307 W. South St., Union died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Oakmont Nursing Home after a long illness.

Mrs. Farr was born in Kelton, August 22, 1916 a daughter of the late Claude M. and Nannie Gault Comer. She was retired from Duncan Acres United Methodist Church Child Care and was a life long member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Dot will surely be missed by her family and loved ones, but they take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her beloved son Dan Phagan Farr who preceded her in death.

Surviving are a brother: Joe Rodney Comer of Fayetteville, NC ; a very special friend: Jim Huffstickler of Charlotte, NC and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Farr was predeceased by one sister, Mozelle C. McGrady and four brothers: Emerson, Harry, Gilbert and Bill Comer.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, May 10, 2010 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Farr’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.

The family wishes to thank Dr. David Keith and the staff and nurses of Oakmont Nursing Home for their care and concern for Mrs. Farr during her illness.

Mr. Buck H. Butler, Jr, age 79 of 1722 Union Blvd., Union, SC, widower of Betty Haithcock Butler, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Butler was born in Greensboro, NC June 28, 1930, a son of the late Buck H. Butler, Sr and Pat Butler. He retired from Cone Mill - Carlisle Finishing after forty-two years of service and was a member of Carlisle Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Butler was a member of Masonic Lodge #75 in Santuck; a Shriner; an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a Master Sargent of the US Army having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Butler was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Buck H. Buter, III and wife Kathy of Buffalo; a companion of eleven years, Ann Mitchell of Union; five grandchildren: Angie Rodney and husband Scott, Jason Butler and wife Melinda, Bucky Butler and wife Andrea, Jamie McAbee and wife Misty and Justin McAbee and wife Randi and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Butler was predeceased by a daughter, Belinda Hope Butler McAbee.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 8, 2010 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. Jamie McAbee. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Paul Sarratt Greer
Union, SC

Mr. Paul Sarratt Greer, Union businessman, patriot, Christian, and family patriarch died Monday, May 3, 2010 at his home, 505 Springdale Drive, Union. He was 93 years old and was the loving and devoted husband, of Margarette Crawford Greer for sixty-three years.

Mr. Greer was born in Excelsior community of Union October 23, 1916 a son of the late James Greer and Sallie Edwards Greer. When he was a small child, his family moved to the Sardis community where they owned and operated a farm. Having attended the Sardis schools, he worked with the SC State Hwy. Department, and played textile league baseball with Excelsior prior to WWII. The first of five brothers to answer the call of his country, (September 16, 1940), he left Union with the National Guard Unit and rose to the rank of Sargent with Company L 253rd Infantry. He served in Iceland, Scotland, England and France and he was awarded OSEAMET Campaign medal with two bronze service stars and the American Defense Service Medal.

Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to Union County and worked with A.M. Adams at his Esso station. On July 1, 1946, Mr. Greer opened Greer’s Shell #1 on North Pinckney Street. On October 15 of that same year he married Miss Margarette. An entrepreneur at heart Mr. Greer expanded his business to include Greer’s Wrecker Service in 1948 and Greer’s Oil Company in 1951. Prior to the formal opening of the Duncan Bypass, Greer’s Shell #2 opened in July 1956 on the west corner of West Main and Duncan Bypass. In 1993 Mr. Greer consolidated his three businesses into one, which became Greer’s Exxon Station at 101 North Duncan Bypass. On January 4, 2000 after 53 years operating a gas and oil company, Mr. Paul, as he was affectionately known, retired and relocated Greer’s Wrecker Service across the road next to Greer’s Car Wash, which he and his son still operate.

Mr. Greer was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church for 82 years where he was active as a member, teacher, leader, contributor and faithful servant of God. The Church honored him by naming him Father of the Year and lifetime member of the United Methodist Men’s Club. Having grown-up on a farm, Mr. Paul established Big G Farms, a cattle farm located on the Sardis Road near his beloved family home. While farming he was named Conservationist of the Year by the Union County Soil Water Conservation District. A member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, he was awarded a sixty year membership pen by American Legion Post 22 in April of 2010.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Sharon Greer Smith of Charleston; a son: Paul S. Greer, II and wife Karen of Union; a brother: Hubert D. Greer and wife Linda of Union; sister-in-law: Julia Greer of Union;4 grandchildren: Troy Douglas Smith and Buffie Smith Copeland and husband Jeff all of Charleston, Paul S. Greer, III and Patrick S. Greer both of Union; 5 great-grandchildren: Taylor and Douglas Smith, Lane Greer Copeland, Seth Crawford Copeland and Matthew Smith all of Charleston and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Greer was predeceased by a son-in-law: John Douglas Smith; three sisters: Margaret G.Moore, Lena G. Ivey and Nina G. Wilson; five brothers: John Lewis Greer, C. Manley Greer, W. Edward Greer, Earl Greer and Russell Greer.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb, Rev. Robert Chapman, and Rev. Angelia Price. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Carroll "Heavy" Burgess, Sr., age 75, husband of Elaine Williford Burgess of 124 Williford Rd., Union, SC died Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Burgess was born in Gaffney, SC, September 5, 1934, a son of the late James William "Bill" Burgess and Julia Hammett Burgess. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School and retired from Tietex in Spartanburg. Mr. Burgess a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class where he had perfect attendance for forty-seven years. He was a veteran of the US Army and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard- Gaffney Unit. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Burgess was also a friend to all who met him.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Melody Ann Burgess Carter and husband Perry Dean; two sons: William Carroll Burgess, Jr and wife Tammie and Clarence Lee Burgess and wife Kathy Farr Burgess all of Union; a sister, Patsy Burgess Poole and husband Ray of Gaffney; six grandchildren: Billy Burgess, Katie Burgess, Andew Carter and wife Jinalee, Logan Carter, Kaitlyn Burgess and Anna Burgess and two great-grandchildren: Haleigh Burgess and Mason Carter. Mr. Burgess was predeceased by a sister, Betty Burgess Martin.

Mr. Hal Waldo Pendleton, age 77, formerly of Pineland Rd. Union, died Saturday May 1, 2010 in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Pendleton was born in Clover, SC , a son of the late Mack Pendleton and Hattie Griffin Pendleton. Mr. Pendleton was retired for Norfolk Southern Rail Road , was a veteran of the U S. Air Force and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two daughters; Sherrie Callahn ( Mike) and Debbie Rector(Tommy) both of Union, a son; Rev Ricky Pendleton (Donna) of Virginia;.three sisters; Margaret Turner and Adora Howell both of Clover and Eloise Pickwell of Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Pendleton was pre-deceased by twin brothers Ted and Fred Pendleton.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Pendleton.
