Christopher Wayne Davis

Mr. Christopher Wayne "Chris" Davis, age 37, of 151 Mudbridge Rd., Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 29, 2011.

Mr. Davis was born in Union, August 28, 1974, a son of James Thomas Roberts of Jonesville and Wanda Mae Davis Brock of the home. He loved his family, fishing, motorcycles and music.

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are a step-father, Jimmy Brock of the home; a special love Alicia Lankford of Buffalo; his two dogs, Scooby and Cujo and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 2, 2011 at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Annie Ruth Duncan Estes
Union, SC

Mrs. Annie Ruth Duncan Estes, age 62, wife of Donald Eugene Estes of 414 Prospect Corner Rd., Union, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

Mrs. Estes was born in Union, SC November 8, 1948, a daughter of the late Mack Daniel Duncan and Iva Smith Duncan. She was a graduate of Union High School and University of S.C. Union. She was formerly employed with Whitten Center and Pauline Care Center. She also had worked at Milliken & Co - Monarch Plant and Ottaray Mills. Mrs. Estes was a member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Jimmy Estes and wife Stepheny of Cross Keys; three brothers: Raymond Duncan and wife Bessie, Ralph Duncan and wife Mary and Billy Joe Duncan and wife Laura all of Union; two precious grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Blain Estes and Ansleigh Estees. Mrs. Estes was predeceased by a son, Donnie Estes, Jr and a sister, Louise Sprouse.

Funeral services wil be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 2, 2011 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carroll Caldwell and Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be John Williams, Robert Williams, Charles Estes, Billy Lawson, Kent Littlejohn, Chad Hooper, Trip Duncan, Joey Duncan, Steven Stone and Reid Stone. The staff of Harmony Care Hospice are asked to sit with the family.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday evening a the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Gladys B. Owens
Buffalo, S.C.

Mrs. Gladys Bailey Owens, age 74, widow of Harold Rufus Owens of 2344 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011.

Mrs. Owens was born in the Sedelia community of Union Co., December 4, 1936, a daughter of the late Brooks and Ettie Belue Bailey. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Her Majesty Manufacturing. Mrs. Owens was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son: Jeffrey Brooks Owens and wife Tracy of Summerville; three grandsons: Brennen Owens of Clemson, Zachery Owens of Columbia, and Spencer Owens of Summerville; five sisters: Myrtle B. Littlejohn of Buffalo, Jean B. Cathcart of Clover, Wilma B. Hindman of Santuc, Sally B. Lancaster of Laurens and Frances B. Vaughan of Union; two brothers: Norman Bailey and Charles Bailey both of Union.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the church Family Life Center after the committal services.

Bertie O. Kingsmore
Buffalo, S.C.

Mrs. Bertie O’Shields Kingsmore departed this life and entered her heavenly home on Monday, August 29, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital following a recent illness.

Born August 20, 1920, Mrs. Kingsmore was the daughter of the late Arnold and Pearl O’Shields. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She devoted her life to being a homemaker and serving her community and church. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking delicious meals.

Mrs. Kingsmore was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Carl E. Kingsmore; two brothers, Albert and Ernest O’Shields: one sister, Willie Mae LeMaster; a son-in-law, Michael Sullivan; and a daughter-in-law, Mi Tae (Kim) Kingsmore.

Surviving are 4 sons: John Kingsmore of Glendale, AZ; Kenneth Kingsmore, and wife Patricia, of Poquoson, VA; Terry Kingsmore, and wife Loretta, of Simpsonville, SC; Karmen Kingsmore, and wife Karen, of Union, SC; and one daughter, Karen Sullivan, of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Also surviving are 9 grandchildren: James Kingsmore of Las Cruces, NM; Richard Kingsmore of Gilbert, AZ; Scott Kingsmore of Lexington, SC; Lori Patterson of Duncan, SC; Ty Kingsmore of Austin, TX; Kacie Taylor of Pendleton, SC; Andrew Kingsmore of Union, SC; Michelle Sullivan, and Gregory Sullivan of Mt. Pleasant, SC: and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 PM, Thursday, September 1, at Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, where "Mama Bertie" was an active member. Dr. Ted Hodges will conduct the services. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons: Richard, Scott, Ty, and Andrew Kingsmore; grandson in-laws Noel Patterson and Stephen Taylor; and family friends Jerry Burgess and David Berry. The Guiding Light Sunday School Class is requested to assemble at the church to serve as honorary escorts.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM at Holcombe Funeral Home in Union, SC.

Louise Olive Floyd
Union, SC

Louise Olive Floyd, widow of Robert Lee Floyd, Jr., passed away on August 29, 2011. Mrs. Floyd was born on January 12, 1917 in Bascom, Florida. She was a daughter of the late Annie Boone and Hosea Daniel Olive. Mrs. Floyd was a graduate of Troy State Teachers College in Troy, Alabama. She taught school for 28 years in Union, SC. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Floyd was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union, the Criterion Book Club of Union, a past board member of the Carnegie Library of Union, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher honor sorority.

Mrs. Floyd is survived by two daughters, Caroline Floyd Buxton (John) of Awendaw, SC and Olivia Floyd Smith of Union, SC; and two sons, Colonel (Ret.) Robert Lee Floyd III (Christine) of Dothan, Alabama, and Samuel Steven Floyd of Estero, Florida; Twelve grandchildren, Lynda Floyd Fouquette (Kevin), Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Robert Lee Floyd IV, Caroline Buxton Avinger (Mauldin), Angela Floyd Hynds (Jeff), John Snowden Wilson Buxton, Jr. (Kristy), Heathley Buxton Cassels (Warren), Samuel Steven Floyd, Jr. (Jaime), Robert Edward Thomas Buxton (Angie), Kristen Floyd Browning (Rob), Sarah Lilian Preot Buxton, Annie Smith Houston (Howie), and Sarah Olivia Smith; and 15 great-grandchildren. Her greatest love was her family.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Reverend Robert Emory. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.

Mrs. Euniva Whaley Heatherly, age 78, widow of Harley Dewey Healtherly, Jr., formerly of Buffalo, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Heatherly was born in Sevierville, TN, February 19, 1933 a daughter of the late Dallas and Mertie Parton Whaley. She retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant after 35 years and was a member of West Springs Baptist Church where she was a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter: Charlene Bridges and husband Marshall of Pendleton; a son: Steve Heatherly and wife Johnnie with whom she made her home in Buffalo; a sister: Lida Heatherly of Buffalo; 9 grandchildren and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Heatherly was predeceased by two sisters: Litha Long and Marthia Whaley and four brothers: Clyde, Lamon, Mermon and Delmar Whaley.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at West Springs Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Neil Keasler.

The family will be at the home of her son, Steve and Johnnie Heatherly, 121 Harley Dr., Buffalo where they will receive friends after the graveside services.

Laurens E. McAlpine
Clinton, S.C.

Mr. Laurens Elliott "Buck" McAlpine, age 92, of the Presbyterian Home in Clinton, widower of Mary Olivia Flowers McAlpine, passed away, Saturday, August 27, 2011.

Mr. McAlpine was born in Union, October 2, 1918, a son of the late Laurens E. and Joe Ketchin McAlpine. He graduated from Union High School as Valedictorian in 1935 and graduated Clemson University in 1939 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. Mr. McAlpine retired in 1983 as a Department Manager with Milliken Co., having worked in both Union and Spartanburg. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving with the 37th Infantry Division in the Pacific and European Theatres. and retired from the US Army Reserves in 1978 with the grade of Major.

Over the years and on into retirement, Buck’s hobbies were many and varied. First was his church, he having been a life-long Presbyterian. Gardening, hunting, and fishing provided his outdoor recreation. He kept his hands active with woodworking and chair caning, and his mind sharp with bridge, chess, jigsaw and crossword puzzles. And through it all, he and Mary, who married in 1946, raised their family.

Surviving are two sons: the Rev. Laurie A. McAlpine and wife Dianne of Conway and John M. McAlpine and wife Mary of Ponte Vedra, FL; a sister: Jodie McAlpine White of Longmont, CO; a brother: Robert C. McAlpine of Gainesville, FL; a daughter-in-law: Pamela McAlpine of Murrells Inlet; four grandchildren: Katherine Mooring and husband Flynn of Charlotte, NC, Anna Bentson and husband Tommy of Lynchburg, VA, Jack McAlpine and Betsy McAlpine both of Ponte Vedra, FL. Mr. McAlpine was predeceased by a sister: Tirzah McAlpine Manley and two brothers: John M. McAlpine and Dr. James C. McAlpine.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Union conducted by Rev. Bob Pettit. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM also Wednesday at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton.

Hazel E. Gregory
Clinton, SC

Miss Hazel Elizabeth Gregory, age 93, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton.

Miss Gregory was born in Santuc, September 10, 1917, a daughter of the late Perleaser J. Gregory and Mary Jenkins Gregory. She retired in 1979 as Director of Nurses from Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A veteran of the US Army, Miss Gregory was a 1st Lieutenant with the Army Nurses Corps having served in both the Pacific and European Theatres. She was a 1935 graduate of Union High School, a graduate of Newberry College and a 1941 graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. After serving her country, Miss Gregory continued her education and graduated from Queens College in 1947 with her Bachelor of Science degree. She was an active member of Cane Creek Presbyterian Church in Santuc.

Surviving are several cousins and was predeceased by a sister, Ruth G. Murray.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Cane Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Gant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of the church following the committal service.

Active pallbearers will be Brian Vaughan, Kevin Vanderford, Gene Jenkins, Travis Jenkins, Ricky Willis and Tyler Crocker.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim Hollingsworth, Dr. Tim Woodall, Evans Crocker and Malcolm Gregory.

Julious E. Clayton

Mr. Julious Eugene "Gene" Clayton, age 62, formerly of Webber Lake Rd., passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Clayton was born in Chester, June 30, 1949, a son of the late John David Clayton and Thelma Mae Ferguson Clayton. He was formerly employed with Milliken Co. and was also a self employed carpenter. Mr. Clayton was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Vietnam War.

Surviving are two daughters: Vickie Lynn Lipsey and husband Chad,, Melinda Ann Richardson and husband Jeff all of Union; one son: Danny E. Clayton of Union; three sisters: Frances Bobo of Union, Patricia Ann Mincey and Rachel Lee Parham both of Columbia; one brother: John Clayton of Union; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

Active pallbearers will be Tyler Traxler, Garrett Traxler, Kendall Summer, Pete Parham, Kevin Parham and Tim Greene.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.

Bobby Ray Gambrell
Roebuck, S.C.

Mr. Bobby Ray Gambrell, age 56 of 200 Gambrell Dr., Roebuck, passed away, Monday, August 22, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mr. Gambrell was born in Anderson, February 6, 1955 a son of the late Bobby Larry Gambrell and Betty Jean Tallent Gambrell. He was owner of the Heatherwood Mobile Home Park in Roebuck.

Surviving are a daughter Rindi G. Whitlock and husband Walter Whitlock, Jr.; a sister: Beverly G. Smith of Jonesville; a grandsons: Bryant Whitlock of Jonesville; a niece: Brandy S. Howell and husband Johnny of Union; a nephew: Joshua Brett Smith of Jonesville and a great-niece Brylie Howell of Union.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, at the Eastview Cemetery in Honea Path.

The family will receive friends 7:00 until 9:00 Pm Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jack Thomas Wilburn
Union, S.C.

Jack Thomas Wilburn, 87, died Aug. 20, 2011. He was the husband of Nancy Lewis Wilburn. Mr. Wilburn was born on May 30, 1924, in Union, and grew up in the Cedar Hill Community, a son of the late Bertis Johnson and Charles Manley Wilburn. He and his family were faithful members of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church throughout his formative years.

The Family Life Center at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church was given by Mr. Wilburn and his family and dedicated to his father’s memory. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1942. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 54th General Hospital as a surgical technician in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. His working career included a number of years with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He also owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Orangeburg. He retired from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and spent 27 years as a consumer specialist.

Mr. Wilburn was a former member of the Jaycees, the Elks Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Union Country Club. He was a Master Tree Farmer and a former cattle farmer. He built the first pizza restaurant in Union County, Pizza Hut, and managed his real estate holdings until his death. He was a member of the Piedmont Girl Scouts Board of Union, Spartanburg and Cherokee counties and developed Camp Drew for Girl Scouts of Union. He was a founder, former member and first chairman of the board of Union Academy. His generosity provided two locations for Habitat for Humanity Homes in Union County. Mr. Wilburn was an active member of First Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.

Survivors are his wife of nearly 60 years; two daughters, Nancy Wilburn Kennedy and her husband, Leroy Kennedy III of Carrollton, Texas and Linda Wilburn Weber and her husband, William Henry Weber of Summerville; three grandchildren, Patrick Wilburn Kennedy and Matthew McLawhorn Kennedy of Carrollton, Texas, and Carolina Koran Weber of Summerville; a sister, Ruby Wilburn Cook and her husband, Lee H. Cook of Greenville; one brother, Charles Manley Wilburn Jr. and his wife, Jo Ellen Wilburn of Tucker, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Delores Wilburn of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Edward Wilburn.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Wilson Smith and the Rev. Ricky Pendleton officiating. Interment will follow in Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8:30 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Martha Hajek-Tesar (Hixson)
Formerly of Union

Mrs. Martha Hajek-Tesar (Hixson), age 68, of Germany, widow of Henry Tesar, died Saturday, August 20, 2011 in Germany. Martha was formerly of Buffalo and was first married to Terry Hixson of Spartanburg.

Martha is survived by a daughter, Stefanie Moss and husband Brent; five sons: Frank Hixson and wife Mary, Mark Hixson and wife Nikki all of Union, Ralph Hixson, Jason Hixson both of Germany and Chuck Laverster and wife Kira of Chester and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 28, 2011 at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Johnny Burgess.

Visitation will be held in the church immediately following the service.

Rosemary Elaine Warren Holt, age 64, of Newton went to her eternal home Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Carillon Assisted Living in Newton. Born May 21, 1947 in York Co., SC, she was the daughter of the late Harley and Bertie Warren. Rosemary worked for C.R. Laine Furniture for 26 years. She was a member of Oxford Baptist Church in Conover. She was preceded in death by her birth mother, Josie Moss Warren, in addition to her parents.

She is survived by: 3 Daughters: Wendy Barger Thomas and husband Frank of Conover, Kimberly Dawn Barger of MO, Angie Elkins and husband Kevin of Ashland City, TN;

Son: Master Sgt. Randy Ly and wife Jennifer of Catawba; 3 Brothers: Donald Warren and wife Mary Jo, Randy Warren and wife Monica, Henry Warren and wife Betty; 2 Sisters: Terry Erwin and husband David, Peggy Baldwin and husband Wayne; 4 Grandsons: Caleb Thomas, Joey Elkins, Jessie Elkins, Dexter Ly.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at Oxford Baptist Church in Conover with Rev. Joel Frye officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00-4:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

A Graveside Service will be on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Lockhart Cemetery, Lockhart, SC conducted by Dr. Eddie Saxon and Rev. Scott Cobb.

Mr. Williams was born in Union, SC November 6, 1962, a son of Thomas N. Williams and the late Carol Vaughan Williams. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was an active member of Beulah Baptist Church. Mr. Williams was employed with Pizza Hut of Union.

Surviving in addition to his father, Thomas Williams is his step-mother: Inez Williams of Union; a sister: Kellie Bennett and husband Brian of Jonesville; a special friend: Jennifer McFalls of Lockhart; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Beulah Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mark Truitt. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Phillip “Pee Wee” Gough
Union, SC

Mr. Phillip “Pee Wee” Gough, age 75, husband of Betty Bryant Gough of 102 Brookside Drive, Union, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Regional Hospice Home of Spartanburg.

Mr. Gough was born in Surry County, NC July 12, 1936, a son of Elonzo Montgomery Gough and Etta Beatrice Boyd Gough. He was a graduate of Mt. Airy High School, Mt. Airy, NC and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Gough retired from Cone Mills- Carlisle Finishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife Betty are two daughters: Sherry Jackson and husband Mike, Dawn Childers and husband Jay; two sons: Phil Gough and wife Kathryn and Michael Gough and wife Ashley; seven grandchildren: Ashley Jackson, Brooke Jackson, Dayne Jackson, Alex Childers, Sydney Childers, Ethan Gough and Eli Gough all of Union; a sister, Jo Ann Parris and husband Autrey of Winston Salem.

Mr. Dillon Luke Millwood, age 17 of 215 Park Drive, Jonesville and also 120 Youngblood Street, Jonesville, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at his home.

Luke was born in Spartanburg, SC January 21, 1994, a son of Roger Earl Millwood of Union and Amy Burton Eaves of Jonesville. He was a former student at Union County Adult Education and had attended Jonesville High School. Luke was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a grandfather, Robert Burton of Jonesville; an uncle, Robert Neil Burton of Spartanburg and his girlfriend, Marie Lipsey of the home. Luke was predeceased by a sister, Hillary Millwood and maternal grandmother, Doris Elaine Burton.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 19, 2011 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Lawton Neely. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday evening at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Gertrue McCulloch Cudd
Union, SC

Mrs. Gertrue McCulloch Cudd, age 92 of 126 Pineview Rd., Union, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Cudd was the widow of Robert Harold Cudd, Sr. Mrs. Cudd was born in Kelton April 22, 1919, a daughter of the late Stead and Kate Garner McCulloch. She was co owner with her husband of Cudd’s Metal Works for a number of years. Mrs. Cudd served her Lord at Fairforest Baptist Church where she volunteered as church treasurer for fifty-two years.

Surviving are a daughter, Janice Zabarac and husband Michael of Lilburn, GA; two sons: Robert Harold Cudd, Jr of Spartanburg and Robbie Cudd and wife Leann of Union; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 19, 2011 at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory.

Active pallbearers will be Robbie Cudd, Bobby Dehart, Dickie Fowler, Tony Zabarac, Joey Zabarac and Larry Millstead.

Ms. Susan Vinson Thomason, age 57 of 445 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union, SC died Sunday, August 14, 2011 at her home.

Ms. Thomason was born in Union, SC October 19, 1953, a daughter of Julia Eaves Vinson of Union and the late Elzie Eugene Vinson. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was formerly employed with Duraco, Klapat and Winn Dixie. Ms. Thomason was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Katie T. Adams and husband Jonathan; a sister, Cathy Smith and husband Jerry; a special nephew, Scott Smith and wife Tonya; two great-nieces: Tayla Smith and Raina Smith all of Union and three special cousins: Jennie Peay of Buffalo, Audrey Boler and Sybil Allen both of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Steve Williams and Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Frances Elizabeth McAbee West, age 92 of 226 Oak Grove Rd., Union, SC went home to be with the Lord Friday, August 12, 2011 at her home. She was the widow of Warren O. West.

Mrs. West was born in Union, SC August 1, 1919, a daughter of the late David T. McAbee and Bertha Burdett McAbee. She was a former Textile worker and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mrs. West was a loving grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Kitty Freeman and husband Shane of Utah; three grandsons: Mike Lawson of Buffalo, Jeff and Eric Ranstad of Nashville, TN; great-grandchildren: Heather M. Pfau of Union and Daniel R. Harris of TN; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John McAbee and wife Uki of Hawaii and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. West was predeceased by a daughter, Louise W. Champion and a brother, James McAbee.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory and Rev. Wayne Cooke. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Fred Webb Mull, Jr. age 52, of 450 Boy’s Home Rd., Pauline, formerly of Union, passed away, Sunday, August 7, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Mull was born in Dover, DE, April 8, 1959 a son of the late Fred W. Mull, Sr. and Beverly Calvert Mull and was a former truck driver.

Surviving are a daughter: Dana Mull of Pauline; four sisters: Heide M. Synder of Fayetville, NC, Vicky Layton of Boiling Springs, Sandra Mull and Donna Smith both of Pauline; and four grandchildren. Mr. Mull was predeceased by a son, Duston Mull and a sister: Becky Crawford.

Mrs. Nettie Mae Allison Kirby, age 95, widow of Paul Kirby, went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday, August 10, 2011.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Spartanburg Co., March 17, 1916, a daughter of the late William and Annie Henderson Allison. She was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church of Pacolet and was a homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters: Gail Rochester and Lynn Mosier both of Pacolet; two sisters: Rosa McCraw and Faye O’Shields both of Spartanburg; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Mrs. Kirby was predeceased by two daughters, Carolyn Smith and Ann Kirby and one son, Ricky Smith.

Graveside services will be held 11:30 AM Friday, August 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pacolet conducted by Rev. Keith Stott.

Active pallbearers will be Daniel Yeargin, Aaron Mosier, Bubba Mosier, Brian Rochester, Buddy Peterson and David Miller.

Allen Michael Smith
Lockhart, S.C.

Mr. Allen Michael Smith, age 28, son of Mike and Shirley Black Smith of 142 Woodside Dr., Union (Lockhart community) passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Wallace Thompson Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, March 1, 1983, and was a 2001 graduate of Lockhart High School. He received his Associate’s Degree from the University of South Carolina, Union campus. Mr. Smith served with the US Army, Special Forces, 101st Airborne, 3rd Battalion, 5th Group out of Fort Campbell, KY and served three tours of duty in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. He earned his Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge # 244.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother: Brad Smith and wife Stephanie of Moncks Corner; his grandparents: Rev. John Smith and wife Gladys of Spartanburg and a special friend: Autumn Fowler of Union. Allen was known as "Uncle Goob" to his niece and nephew, Natalie and Nicholas Smith.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 12, 2011 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by his grandfather, Rev. John Smith and Rev. Brian Bishop. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Mr. Jack Martin, age 76, of 710 Whitestone Rd., Whitestone, SC, passed away, Monday August 8, 2011 at the Medical University of SC in Charleston after a brief illness.

Mr. Martin was born in Spartanburg Co., June 20, 1935 a son of the late Broadus and Florence Gibson Martin. He retired from Randolph Trucking after 35 years and was a former member of the US Coast Guard. Mr. Martin was an avid NASCAR fan.

Surviving are a daughter: Andria Picone of OK; two step-sons: David Sanders of Whitestone with whom Mr. Martin made his home and Nick Martin of Pacolet; two sisters: Thelma Powell and Geraldine Kirby both of Pacolet; his best friend, Sue Nutt; 6 grandchildren: Jessica Quinn, Len Lansdell, Paige Sanders, Nick Martin, Dominick Martin, and Jax Martin. Mr. Martin was predeceased by three brothers: Broadus, John Paul, and Robert Martin and one sister: Mavis Martin.

A visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

The family will be at the home of his niece, Diane Osteen, 1610 W. Main St., Pacolet.

Virginia W. Adams
Seneca, S.C.

Mrs. Virginia West Adams, of 710 Oak Shore Court in Seneca, widow of W.H. "Sam" Adams, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at the Oconee Hospice House of the Foothills in Seneca after an extended illness.

Mrs. Adams was born in Union Co., a daughter of the late Claude and Anniebelle Gist West. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Union but attended Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church during the time she lived at Lake Hartwell with her daughter and son-in-law.

Mama Jenny, as she was so lovingly called by so many, was devoted to her family and got great joy out of cooking and caring for them at every opportunity. She had a passion for her yard and all of her flowers. She took much pride in keeping her yard looking like it came right out of Southern Living!

Surviving are a daughter Anne Mitros and husband Pat of Seneca; a grandson: Ashley Mitros and wife Kristi; two great-granddaughters: Olivia and Cammie all of Simpsonville; a brother Herbert West of Bamberg and her devoted caregiver, Lisa Hughes, who lovingly cared for her at home for the past three years. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Wright and Mabel Fowler.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Julian Ford, a close friend of the family.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bradley was born in Greer, May 13, 1928, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Norris Skipper. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Union.

Surviving are a sister: Mrs. J.B. Greene, Jr. (Betty Sue) of Spartanburg and a niece: Patti Greene Willingham and husband Randy of Chesnee.

Mr. Eugene Bergin Howell, age 76, husband of Virginia Ogle Howell of 8868 Lockhart Hwy., Sharon, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Howell was born in Union, February 1, 1935 a son of the late Samuel Reid Howell and Avie Vaughan Howell. He was self-employed in automobile sales and was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters: Diane Belk, Kathy Rumfelt and Cristy Edwards and husband Harry all of Sharon and Denise Moore and husband Fred of Inman; three sons: Donald Howell and wife Amy of Batesburg, Dean Howell and wife Kim of Buffalo and Earl Howell and wife Tracy of Sharon; one brother: William Howell of Union; a granddaughter Sandra Freeman reared in the home and 8 other grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a brother, Miles Howell.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 5, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop. Burial will be in Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Charles Edward "Ed" Gibson

Mr. Charles Edward "Ed" Gibson, age 84 of 225 Wesley Chapel Church Rd., Union, SC went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 31, 2011. Mr. Gibson was the widower of Lillie Ruth "Boose" Palmer Gibson.

Mr. Gibson was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from Neely’s Lumber Company in Spartanburg. He also worked for many years for Berry Builder Mart. Mr. Gibson was a Veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and also sang with the Riverside Boys for forty plus years.

Surviving are three daughters: Becky G. Hyatt and husband Bobby of Buffalo, Pam G. Shetley of Inman and Cindy G. Kendrick and husband Bruce of Buffalo; two sons: Steve Gibson and wife Rhonda and Eddie Gibson and wife Bonnie; a sister, Fran Belk; two brothers Billy Dean Gibson and David Gibson all of Union; ten grandchildren: Bob Hyatt, Thad Hyatt, Matt Hyatt, Donya Sumner, Garrett Gibson, Nathan Gibson, Adam Gibson, Nicole Gibson, Heidi Hodge and Tabitha Kendrick and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by two sisters, Nellie Mae Dabbs and Alpha Woods and four brothers, Buck, Carl, Glen and Grady Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Tim Huckaby and Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Wesley Belk, Tommy Sumner, Garrett Gibson, Rick McCloud, Jerry Parks and Todd Palmer. Members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and members of the Riverside Boys are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
