Teresa Varner Manley

Mrs. Teresa Kaye Laverne Varner Manley, age 48, wife of William “Billy” Manley of 3100 Wood Avenue, Lot H 8, Colorado Springs, CO, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Manley was born in Union, SC September 25, 1962, a daughter of John Varner of Buffalo and the late Joyce Gibson Varner Sailors. She was a loving daughter, wife, mama and nanny; was an avid reader, loved to crochet and was her “daddy’s carpenter helper”.

Surviving in addition to her husband and father are a daughter, Tiffany Gossett and husband Jason; a son, Matthew Wayne Gregory and fiancée Brittany Knox; a step-mother, Brooks Varner; two grandchildren: Grayson Tyler Reid Gossett and Jordan Nicole Gregory all of Union; two sisters: Barbara Voiselle of Union and Penny Lynn Culp and husband Bob of Inman and a brother, Timothy Varner and wife Kathy of Union.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening a the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jack Edward Vaughn, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. Jack Edward “Jackie” Vaughn, Jr, age 55, husband of Kim Bright Vaughn, of 121 Lovers Hill Rd., Union went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 29, 2011 after a courageous battle from an extended illness.

Jackie was born in Greensboro, NC, October 1, 1955, a son of Jack E. Vaughn, Sr., and Doris Teasley Vaughn of Union. He was a 1973 graduate of Union High School and retired from Cone Mills after thirty-five years of service. Jackie was co-founder of Hometown Courier of Union and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a very loving, caring, and giving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.

Surviving in addition to his loving wife of twenty-six years and his parents are a daughter, Crystal Marie Vaughn of the home; a son, Lance Edward Vaughn and wife Amanda of Carlisle; a sister, Kathy Zemp and husband Doug of Edisto Island, SC; in-laws, Bobby and Marilyn Bright; a sister-in-law, Crystal Lewis; a brother-in-law, Danny Bright and wife Amy all of Union; two grandchildren: Brycen Christopher and Skylynn Michelle Vaughn; four nephews: Rhett Zemp, Patrick Zemp, Blake Zemp and Daniel Bright and a niece, Kacie Ingle and husband Shawn. Jackie was predeceased by a daughter, Leslie Michelle Vaughn.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Shawn Ingle. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Robinson, Jr., Dale Neal, Dr. Jeffrey Craft, Joey Allison, Cyle Coker, Kevin Smith, Patrick Russell and Roger Wade. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM to form the honorary escort: Lecil Smith, Jim Vaughan, Jackie Allison, Brandon Allison, Billy Keisler, Don Ray Shetley, Dale Wendell, Eddie Hines, Butch Starnes, James Bright, Rick Vaughn, Toney Horne, Bobby Joe Gibbs, Torrance Inman and Paul Greer.

Visitation will be held 6:00-9:00 PM this evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

William Bradley Hawkins
Union, SC

Mr. William Bradley Hawkins, age 51, of 1207 Sardis Rd., Union, SC went home to be with the Lord, Friday, January 28, 2011.

Mr. Hawkins was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 19, 1959, a son of the late George R. Childers and Dorothy Elizabeth Reynolds Dawson. He was a graduate of Broome High School and a construction worker. Mr. Hawkins was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed studying his Bible, woodworking and fishing.

Surviving are a daughter, Elisha Cooch; two sons: George Childers and Chris Childers; seventeen sisters and brothers: Archie Hawkins, Jerry Childers, George Childers, Cisco Childers, Kenny Childers, Glenn Childers, Paul Hawkins, James Hawkins, Bobby Worley, Beverly Burgess, Ruth Todd, Rose Stark, Joyce Childers, Mary Childers, Arnetta Latengeorge, Jeweldean “Sis” and Anne Gilkison.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family is at their respective homes.

Donald G. Littlejohn
Union, S.C.

Mr. Donald G. Littlejohn, age 83, husband of Patsy Allen Littlejohn, 310 W. Hillcrest Ave., Union, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Littlejohn was born in Union, June 29, 1927, a son of the late Thomas W. and Lillian M. Smith Littlejohn. He was retired from Milliken, Co., and was a veteran of the US Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Littlejohn was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church where he was instrumental in the building of the church and had served as a Deacon. Mr. Littlejohn was also a Mason.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Donna L. Sweezy of Union and Beverly L. Smith and husband Smitty of Jonesville; one son: Wendell Littlejohn of the home; two brothers: Darrell Brent Littlejohn and wife Ann of Union and Joe Ed Littlejohn and wife Linda of Buffalo; two grandchildren: Jason Sweezy and wife Rebecca and Taylor Smith; two great-grandchildren: Cade and Jake Sweezy. Mr. Littlejohn was predeceased by a brother: Bill Littlejohn.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 28, 2011, at Ottarary Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Littlejohn, Lee Littlejohn, Michael Littlejohn, Tommy Littlejohn, Joey Littlejohn, Mason Caldwell, T.J. Hopper and Jeff Gault.

The following are asked to assemble at the church to form the honorary escort: Roger Wade, Fred Shirley, Harold Lawson, Ermy Wilson, Mike Carter, Ron Ellis, Francis Ellis, and Johnny Hagan.

Mr. Fred Dufford Foster, age 80, husband of Martha Gilbert Foster of 3311 Jonesville- Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Foster was born and raised in Polk Co., NC, October 24, 1930, a son of the late Britt and Alma Dill Foster. He retired from Milliken Co., Hatch Mill after 29 years and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Deborah Hall and husband Donnie of Woodruff; three sons: Ricky Foster and wife Judy and Alfred Kirk Foster all of Green Creek, NC and Dennis Foster and wife Allison of Union; two sisters: Christine Brookey of Greenville and Jessie Nodine of Greer; three grandchildren: Scott Thompson and wife Amanda of Greer, Kimberly Wiseman and husband Charlie of Green Creek, NC and Samatha Greer and husband Dale of Hendersonville, NC; two great-grandchildren: Alexandria Wiseman and Camrie Greer and a lot more loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Saturday prior to the service.

Burial will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, January 30, 2010 at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, NC, conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Brian Wilson.

Bertie Mae Lawson

Mrs. Bertie Mae Nance Lawson, age 91 of 108 Sugar Creek Rd., Buffalo, SC, widow of William L. Lawson died Monday, January 24, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Union, SC, a daughter of the late Roy Nance and Mamie Eubanks Nance Northern. She was a homemaker, former textile worker and was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Doris Garner and husband Kent and Ann Ketterman and husband Stan all of Union; two sons: Thomas W. Lawson and wife Mary of Buffalo and John W. Lawson and wife Lennis of Santuck; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by a son, James L. Lawson; foursisters: Irene Sprouse, Sadie Wicks, Ruby Stephenson and Ida Williams and three brothers: Martin Nance, Roy Nance and Ray Northern.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lawson’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Catherine "Roberta" Deal

Mrs. Catherine "Roberta" Carter Deal, age 81, widow of Sam Deal, of 133 Bailey Town Road, Union, SC died Sunday, January 23, 2011.

Mrs. Deal was born in Union, SC, July 24, 1929, a daughter of the late Butler Carter and Stella Bentley Carter. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School, a former employee of Milliken Industries, a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Deal was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 79, and a member of the Red Hats Society.

Surviving are a daughter: Rhonda Bailey and very close companion, Howard Joe West of Union; a son: Wayne Deal of Union; two sisters: Peggy Crocker of Hartsville and Minnie Ruth Taylor of Union; a special friend: Betty Webber of Union; Grandchildren: Nikki Valentine and husband Jerry; a great-grandson: Brandon Valentine all of Bullocks Creek; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Deal was predeceased by a son: Jimmy L. Deal; two brothers: A. G. Carter and William "Bill" Carter.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Haney Cemetery conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Steve Williams.

William "Bill" Richbourg

Mr. William "Bill" Wyman Richbourg, age 83, husband of Evelyn D. Richbourg of 208 Spruce Street, Union, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Richbourg was born in Spartanburg, SC January 22, 1928, a son of the late Edward Brunson and Inez Moore Richbourg. He attended Union County Schools and graduated from Clemson University. Mr. Richbourg was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict and co-owner of Richbourg Furniture Store. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Union Elks Club and the American Legion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Jean R. Guess of Columbia and Ann R. Palmer and husband Jerry of Buffalo; four grandchildren: Julia Chandler Guess of Montreat, NC, Ann Cullen Guess of Spartanburg, William Clayton Palmer and wife April of Hartsville and Daniel Wayne Palmer and Stephanie of Jonesville; three great-grandchildren: Lily Kathleen Palmer of Union, Emma Grace Palmer of Hartsville, and Nicholas Aiden Palmer of Jonesville; one brother: Jack Richbourg and wife Jeanette of Union.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 24, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Spencer Ledford and Mrs. Janet Ledford.

The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Griffin T. Willard, husband of Shelvia "Shelby Jean" Crocker Willard, of 2001 Bellamy Rd., Conway, SC, died Wednesday, January 19.

Mr. Willard was born in Union, SC, September 20, 1934, a son of the late John William Willard and Hoyt Henderson Willard. He was a veteran of the US Navy, having served on the USS Lake Champlain in the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters: Kathy Ryan and husband Tom of Waxaw, NC, and Sheena James of the home; two sons: Griffin Ray Willard and wife Jeannie of Fountain Inn and Dennis Willard and wife Sally of Myrtle Beach; two sisters: Patricia Frost and husband Joel of Buffalo, and Shirley Maglachi of Los Angeles, CA; and a twin brother, Gillford Willard of Pasadena, CA; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Willard was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Brown.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22, at Mon Aetna Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held today from 6-8 p.m. at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Carolyn Adams Lindler

Mrs. Carolyn Adams Lindler, age 65, wife of Floyd Reggie Lindler of 165 Eison Rd., Union, SC died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at her home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Lindler was born in Union, SC February 4, 1945, a daughter of the late Jesse Willard Adams and Mae Chalk Adams. She was a graduate of Union High School; retired from Conso Products and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Jennifer Wright Kimbrell and Jan Wright Ivey and husband Jamie all of Union; three step-children: Blake Lindler and wife Sandy Paige Corley and Daniel Lindler and wife Cindy all of Whitmire; a sister, Janice A. Bain of Whitmire and twelve grandchildren. Mrs. Lindler was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Bruce Wright; a sister, Jean Adams Austin and a brother, Richard W. Adams.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, January 22, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Reid Bowyer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Fant Austin, Kendall Austin, Cam Kimbrell, Cade Kimbrell, Tristen Bohms and Leon Smith.

Annie Hewitt Lybrand

Mrs. Annie Hewitt Lybrand, age 78, widow of John William Lybrand, Jr., of 506 Wilson Street, Union, SC, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011.

Mrs. Lybrand was born in Union, SC February 25, 1932 a daughter of the late Walter L. Hewitt and Lillian Harris Hewitt. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and the Eugenie Smith Circle. Mrs. Lybrand formally worked in textiles and served in the church as a daycare worker.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors are three sons: Larry Lybrand and wife Patti of LaGrange, GA, John W. "Bill" Lybrand, III and wife Thomasine of Greenwood and Rev. Frank Lybrand and wife Sherry of Spartanburg; a special friend: Dan Vaughan of Union; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lybrand was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz and her son, Rev. Frank Lybrand. Burial will be Union Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Lybrand, Robbie Lybrand, Billy Lybrand, Bryce Lybrand, Taylor Lybrand, Randy Canupp and Landy Canupp. The following are asked to sit in a group, members of her Sunday school class and members of the Eugenie Smith Circle.

Mr. Randall Johnson, husband of Sandra Johnson went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, January 17, 2011. He was an avid horseman and farmer.

Mr. Johnson is also survived by the lights of his life, hischildren: Rheagan and Tsali Johnson and Donna and Rhonda Johnson; two sisters: Jessie Brown and Neil Johnson; a brother, Henry Johnson; many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, January 21, 2011 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Elsie Bogan West
Jonesville, S.C.

Mrs. Elsie Bogan West went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Saturday evening, January 15, 2011 with her son, daughter-in-law and niece by her bedside.

Mrs. West was the daughter of the late Isaac and Mamie Hyatt Bogan. She was born, May 9, 1934 in the Bogansville community of Union and was a 1952 graduate of West Springs High School. A member of Bogansville United Methodist Church, she served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School and was a lay speaker as long as her health permitted.

Mrs. West worked 20 years with Winn-Dixie of Union and then retired after 26 years of service from Drs. Fleming and Fulmer of Spartanburg. She was the devoted wife of the late Hugh Nelson West and a beloved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, and will be remembered for her loving, caring heart and service to others.

Survivors include her son: Alan West and wife Dianne; two grandsons: Bryan West and wife Alana and Scott West; a great-grandson: Cooper West; a special niece: Diane Burgess and husband Dennis and their sons: Daniel and Michael Burgess; and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by two brothers: Christopher and Herbert Lee Bogan.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, January 17, 2011 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson and her son, Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Eddie Lawson, Ira Lawson, Joey Lawson, Kenneth West, Darryl Williams and Darrell Kendrick. Members of the Mary Sue Keith Sunday School class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held in the church social hall immediately following the services.

Mrs. Lillian M. Fowler Fowler, age 92 of 385 Poplar Rd., Jonesville, SC, widow of Lewis Manning Fowler died Thursday, January 13,2011 at her home.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Jonesville, SC November 23, 1918, a daughter of the late George Fowler and Bessie Carter Fowler. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Dolores Fowler of the home and Janice Patton and husband Robert of Gaffney; a son, George Fowler of the home:four grandchildren: Adrian Patton and wife Jennifer of Spartanburg, Kevin Patton, Megan Patton both of Gaffney and Melissa Dunnaway of Spartanburg and two great-grandchildren: Christopher and Ethan Patton both of Spartanburg.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 17, 2011 at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Elizabeth Seay Knox, age 65, of 828 Flat Drive, Buffalo, SC, died Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Knox was born in Union, SC May 31, 1945, a daughter of the late Herman Seay and Ollie Ruth Queen Seay. She was retired from Conso Products and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are three sons: James L. Knox, Jr. and wife Deanna of Buffalo, Ernest A. Knox of Cross Keys and John W. Knox of the home; a sister, Catherine Seay; a brother, Donnie Seay both of Buffalo, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ms. Knox was predeceased by a brother, Gene Seay.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Pastor Linda Padgett.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Patricia Palmer Johnson

Mrs. Patricia Palmer Johnson, age 76 of 115 Wedgewood Court, Union, widow of James T. Johnson died Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Essex, England, May 7, 1934, a daughter of the late William and Amy Palmer. She was a very active member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

Surviving are four daughters: Liz West, Linda Johnson, Lisa Trammell and Heather Johnson; a son, James William Johnson all of Union; a sister, Jean Watts of London, England; a brother Alex Palmer of Yorkshire, England; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by a sister, Marian Lock.

Memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses conducted by Brother Joe Adams and Brother James Rogers.

Mr. Albert W. Kingsmore, age 80 of 103 Kingsmore Place, Union, SC, widow of Betty H. Kingsmore died suddenly Monday, January 10, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr Kingsmore was born in Bogansville Community, SC, December 4, 1930, a son of the late Ray Kingsmore and Leatha Kingsmore. He was the former owner of Al’s Clean Up and was also a former member of the South Carolina National Guard- Union Unit. Mr. Kingsmore was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and a former member of the Buffalo Redman Tribe.

Surviving are a son, Donald Ray Kingsmore; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Kingsmore; three grandchildren: David and Danielle Adams and Donnie Fallen all of Union and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kingsmore was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Mills and a brother, Lawrence Kingsmore.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Friday, January 14, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Michael Wingertsahn.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:30 PM Friday prior to the service. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Kingsmore, Jerry Ivey, Guy Hollar, Danny Ray Brown, Stanley Haney and David Haug. Members of the Buffalo Redman Tribe are asked to sit in a group.

Raymond Dewey Dimsdale, Jr.

Mr. Raymond Dewey Dimsdale, Jr, age 60 of Leland Street, Spartanburg, SC died Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Dimsdale was born in Spartanburg, SC April 20, 1950, a son of Guynell Burrell Dimsdale of Pacolet and the late Raymond Dimsdale, Sr.He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a special friend, Margie Sizemore of the home; a daughter, Marie Dimsdale; two sons: Dewayne Dimsdale and Dewey Ray Dimsdale; a sister, Mary Edwards and husband Phillip all of Pacolet; two brothers: Bobby Dean Dimsdale and wife Jodi and Calvin Dimsdale and wife Charlene all of Jonesville; two step-sons:David Sizemore and wife Anna and Charles Sizemore all of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Dimsdale was predeceased by a sister, Nancy D. Knighten.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Whiteplains Baptist Church in Gaffney conducted by Rev. John Brooks.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM at the graveside prior to the service.

Mrs. Edna Chalk Parks, age 91, widow of Harold H. Parks, formerly of Pinckney Place, Union, went home to be with Lord, January 10, 2011.

Mrs. Parks was born in Union, May 16, 1919, a daughter of the late Charles Chalk and Lottie Melton Chalk Sinclair. She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was a former member of West Side Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Juanita White and husband Franklin, Jo Wood and husband Alvin all of Union; two sons: Mike Parks and wife Sara Jane of Union and Fred Parks of Millon, GA; a sister: Tootsie Lipsey of Statesboro, GA; a brother: Bud Chalk of California; 12 grandchildren: Melody Lancaster, Robin Wood, Roxanne Ridings, Tommy Fowler, Billy Fowler, Richie Fowler, Jill Crocker, Christy Moss, Dawn Spencer, Stacy Gibson, Shane Parks and David White; and numerous great and great- great-grandchildren. Mrs. Parks was predeceased by two daughters: Joyce Lipsey and Brenda Ochiltree; two sisters: Helen Gregory and Kathleen Coleman and three brothers: Harold Dean Sinclair, Poppy Sinclair and William Chalk.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, January 13, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Parks grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 2:00 until 3:30 PM Thursday prior to the funeral in the chapel.

Mr. John Grey Addison, Jr. age 65, husband of Janet Keasler Addison of 427 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, died unexpectedly at his home Monday morning, January 10, 2011.

Mr. Addison, the son Frances Tucker Addison of Union and the late John Grey Addison, Sr., was born in Union, August 15, 1945. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of the US Navy having served four and one-half years. Mr. Addison was a mechanical engineer and was employed with Torrington Co. and also with Manchester Tools. He was a child of God, a loving husband to Janet for 45 years; a loving father and grandfather, who possessed great knowledge of the Bible.

Surviving in addition to his wife Janet and his mother Frances are a daughter: Tracey Addison Fowler and husband Mike; a son Greg Addison all of Union; two sisters: Janice Wilson of Lexington SC, and Kathy Derrick and husband Rev. Randy Derrick of Little Mountain SC; three grandchildren: John Tyler Addison, Nick Fowler and Madison Fowler all of Union.

Mr. Addison was predeceased by a sister: Dale Addison.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon.

Mr. Marvin Rast White, age 76, husband of Mary Jo Rochester White of 187 Farm Hill Rd. Jonesville, passed away, Sunday January 9, 2011 at his home.

Mr. White was born in Jonesville, August 23, 1934 a son of the late Fay L. White, Sr. and Mae Belle Vinson White.

Mr. White was retired from Bell South after 37 years and was a former member of the Army National Guard. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, the Pacolet Lions Club, the Bell South Pioneers Club and was an avid gardener.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 53 years are 2 daughters; Joy White Gray and husband Ray and Sherry White Gray and husband Jim, 2 sons; Marty White of Jonesville and Mark D. White and wife Camille of Spartanburg, grandchildren; Will, Ginny, Ivy, and Kinsley Gray, 2 sisters; Hazel Feaster of West Columbia and Thelma Carter of Greenville, and a twin brother; Fay White, Jr. of Pacolet and a sister-in-law; Josie Robinson White of Rock Hill. Mr. White was pre-deceased by 6 sisters and 3 brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dr. James Ivey, Pastor Randy Burgess and Rev. Robert Wofford.

Mrs. Iris Mills Broadbent , age 58, wife of Steve Broadbent of 159Ashley Acres, has gone home to be with the Lord. She died peacefully at her home with her husband by her side on Friday evening January 7, 2011.

Mrs. Broadbent was born in Georgia July 21, 1952 a daughter of the late John Mills and Elizabeth Leonard Mills.

Mrs. Broadbent was a graduate of Roswell High School and held a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia. She worked as a caseworker with the Department of Children and Family Services in Illinois before retiring in Union.

Mrs. Broadbent was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Union, where she was a member of the church choir, a member of Circle #1 and assisted in various community ministries.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters; Meg Pfister and husband Rick and Kathryn Keenan and husband Chris both of Chicago, Illinois, a brother; Tom Mills and wife Teresa of Atlanta, Georgia and a granddaughter; Natalie Iris Pfister of Chicago.

A memorial service at First Presbyterian Church will be held at a later date.

Mr. Robert Stanley Jenkins, age 63, husband of Patty Valentine Jenkins, of 228 Belvue Dr., Union, went home to be with the Lord, January 5, 2011.

Mr. Jenkins was born in Union, October 31, 1947, a son of Edna Stone Jenkins of Buffalo and the late Robert "Bob" Jenkins, Jr. He was a graduate of Union High School and Midlands Technical College. Mr. Jenkins retired from Timken Co. and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was also an avid automobile fan. He was first married to the late Martha Elliott Jenkins.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons: Mark Stanley Jenkins and wife Amy Poston Jenkins of Thomson, GA and Matthew Elliott Jenkins and wife Jennifer Sanders Jenkins of Charleston; a step-daughter: Jennifer Lancaster and husband David of Jonesville; one sister: Katie Jenkins of Buffalo; six grandchildren: Martha Kate Jenkins, Mary Tinsley Jenkins, Lansing James Jenkins, Evelyn Paige Jenkins, Michael Lancaster and Abby Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Shep Bevis, Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Jim Palmer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Queen was born in Buffalo, SC September 19, 1931, a daughter of the late Joseph Edwards and Elva Livesay Edwards. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons: Lecil Howard Smith, Jr and wife Sara of Union, Phillip Queen and wife Lisa of York, Col Christopher Queen and wife DeAnn of Colorado Springs and Patrick Queen and wife Carla of Union; two sisters: Sally Epps and husband John of Fairfield and Judy Hagen of Lockhart; four brothers: Gene Edwards and wife Loretta, Thomas Edwards and wife Joretta, Joseph Carl Edwards, Jr and wife Mary all of Union and Douglas Edwards and wife Betty of Inman; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Queen was predeceased by a son, Donald Ray Smith; two sisters: Lucille Wylie and Mildred Snowden and a brother, Emmett Edwards.

Vivian Hughes Spears Whitlock

Mrs. Vivian Hughes Spears Whitlock, age 85, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Ashlan Village in Lyman, SC after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Whitlock was born in Santuc, SC, September 1, 1925 a daughter of the late C.K. Hughes and Elizabeth McDaniel Hughes. She was a lifelong resident of this area except for a residency in Orange Park, FL from 1971 to 1974. Her love in life was family, friends, and community. Her most rewarding occupation was teaching; inspiring and being inspired by the promise of youth. Mrs. Whitlock had three children with the late Ernest Spears and was subsequently married to the late Dudley Whitlock who also had three children.

Mrs. Whitlock asked to be remembered by the following: Help someone you meet who is down and lift them up with hope and love without judging them. Do it quietly. Give refuge to those in life’s storms, with grace and compassion so it is comfortable and natural to accept with dignity. Take a moment to be inspired by the wonder of creation, and know as she did that the Creator lives in the creation, and worship is love and wonder of both.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charitable organization of one’s choice.

John T. Nichols, Sr.
Union, S.C.

Mr. John Thomas Nichols, Sr., age 93, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2011 at his home. Mr. Nichols was born in Spartanburg Co., a son of the late Jesse Herman Nichols and Addie Sams Nichols, natives of Union. He was married 52 years to the late Margaret Parris Nichols who predeceased him in 1998 and he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Nichols served 37 months in the US Army Air Corp stationed in the North Pacific Theater. Upon his return to Union he went into business for himself. He was founder and owner of Nichols Insurance Agency and Nichols Construction Co. of Union; co-founder, secretary and treasurer of Piedmont Concrete Products, Inc. of Union, Spartanburg and Duncan. Mr. Nichols was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving is his loving wife of 10 years, Ann Douglass Gibson Nichols of the home; three children from his first marriage: John T. Nichols, Jr. MD and wife Carol of Spartanburg, Michael P. Nichols and wife Rosa of Union, and Elizabeth Nichols Anderson and husband Dick of Greenville; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two step-sons: Benjamin T. Gibson III and wife Patricia of Greenville and Preston D. Gibson and wife Julie of Cape May Courthouse, NJ; and six step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Caughman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Joe Nichols, James Johannes, Dan Henderson, John Richard Anderson, Charles Habisreutinger, Jacob Robinson, and Marty Robinson.

Mary Estes Farr

Mrs. Mary Electa Farr of Union, widow of Ralph Edward Farr, Sr., died Saturday, January 1, 2011 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. She was born October 18, 1918 in Union County, S.C., the daughter of the late Mary Sartor Estes McHugh and Clanton Gould Estes. She was a graduate of Union High School and Winthrop College.

Mrs. Farr was retired from the United States Forest Service, Tyger River District, Union, South Carolina and was formerly Union County Deputy Clerk of Court. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Louise Willard Circle.

Mrs. Farr is survived by a son, Edward Farr (June) of Prosperity; a daughter, Rebecca Farr Stone of Ludington, Michigan; four grandchildren: Rock Stone (Jennifer) of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina, Chris Farr (Brynley) of Chapin, Andy Farr of Union and Cameron Farr of Prosperity; two great-grandchildren: Luke and Banks Stone and a dear friend, Mrs. Bernestine Gregory of Jonesville.

Graveside service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery, Union on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Mr. Vernon G. "Chunk" Henderson, age 87, passed away Friday December 31, 2010 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a long illness.

Mr. Henderson was born in Union, November 3, 1923, a son of the late Leo B. Henderson, Sr. and Viola Adams Henderson. He was retired from United Merchants, Union Mill and attended the Church on God on Ravenscroft Street.

Surviving are two brothers: Leo B. Henderson, Jr. and wife Norma of Union and Bobby G. "Doc" Henderson, Sr. and wife Juline of Jonesville; and a niece: Kathy Black and husband Rick of Jonesville and several other nieces and nephews. Mr. Henderson was predeceased by a sister: Lois Inman and three brothers: Floyd, Paul and Louis Henderson.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 3, 2011 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Roger Estes.

Visitation will follow the graveside service at the cemetery.

The family is at the home of his niece, Kathy and Rick Black, 717 Pea Ridge Hwy., Jonesville.

Charles Gill, Jr.
Garden City, SC

Mr. Charles Gill, Jr. age 75, formerly of Union, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at his home in Garden City.

Mr. Gill was born in Savannah, GA, April 21, 1935, a son of the late Charles Gill, Sr. and Doris Langford Gill West. He was retired from Kroger Grocery Co. and was the first to conceive the idea to sell rotisserie chickens in retail grocery stores. Mr. Gill was also the former owner and operator of Charlie’s Kitchen in Union. A veteran of the US Coast Guard and the US Army, Mr. Gill was a member of the 82nd Airborne and was also very proud to be a Mason and a Shriner.

Surviving are three daughters: Carmen Gill and special friend Clint Hutcherson of the home, Jessica Gill Henderson and husband Shane of Murrells Inlet, and Debra Gill Barefoot and husband William of Fayetville, NC; one son: Charlie Gill and wife Judy of Lockhart; two step-daughters: Shannon Gordon and husband Wayne of Murrells Inlet and Pamela Hawkins Tinsley and husband Mark of Spartanburg; two sisters: Millie Ramsey and husband Curt of Cincinnati, OH and Charlotte Langford of Chapel Hill, NC; nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Active pallbearers will be Billy West, John West, Wayne Gordon, Dennis Frost, Brian Castle and Johnny West.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a Hospice organization of one’s choice.

The family is at the home of his son: Charlie Gill, 104 Longview Dr., Lockhart and at the home of Linda Chaney, 103 Scenic Dr. Union.
