Theron Donald Duncan

Mr. Theron Donald Duncan, age 55, of 119 Playground Drive, Buffalo, SC died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Duncan was born in Union County, SC September 12, 1955, a son of Betty Trakas Duncan and the late Theron Wilson Duncan. He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two sons: Joseph Trakas Duncan of Prosperity and Reginald Wilson Duncan with the US Army; two sisters:

Elizabeth O’Shields and Kay Littlejohn both of Union; a brother, Ricky Duncan of Whitsett, NC and a granddaughter, Isabella Perrlyn Duncan of Prosperity.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, April 2, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the S.C. Wildlife Association.

The family is at the home of his mother, Betty Duncan, 1810 Main Street, Buffalo, SC 29321.

Clifton L. Brannon
Union, S.C.

Mr. Clifton L. Brannon, age 59, widower of Patricia Roberts Brannon, of 297 Center Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Brannon was born in Lockhart, February 7, 1952, a son of the late Grady Brannon, Sr. and Nellie Rochester Brannon. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from the school as a teacher’s aid. Mr. Brannon was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Choir Director, Youth Director, Sunday School Director and was active in various other capacities of the church.

Surviving are three sons: Clifton Lee Brannon and wife Michelle of Lockhart, Christopher Mark Brannon and wife Nikki and Jason Scott Brannon all of Union; five sisters: Nancy Hope of Union, Tincy Inman, Guynita Brannon and Carolyn Rash all of Lockhart and Brenda Petty of Louisiana; seven grandchildren: Tori Brannon, Hope Wilbanks, Olivia Brannon, Justin Brannon, Abby Brannon, Halle Brannon and Harlee Brannon; father and mother in-law: Doodlebug and Peggy Roberts of Jonesville; special niece: Tess Wilbanks and husband Lonnie; special nephew: Michael Brannon; special friends Lori Roberts and daughter Chelsea McCloud. Mr. Brannon was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Bishop, Dr. Tommy Bryson, Rev. Brad Goodale, and Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Brannon, Dexter Inman, Rodney Inman, Dale Inman, Robert Petty, Larry Roberts, Thomas Parks, and Gerald Gregory.

Members of the Youth of the church, facility and staff of Lockhart School and Mr. Wayne Brannon are all asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Joseph C. Jolly
Union, S.C.

Mr. Joseph C. "J.C." Jolly, age 85, widower of Louise Gwinn Jolly, formerly of Sardis Rd., passed away, Tuesday March 29, 2011, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Jolly was born in Union, July 27, 1925, a son of the late Walter Wilson Jolly and Grace Young Jolly. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from the US Postal Service in Union. Mr. Jolly was also a veteran of the US Marines having served during WWII.

Surviving are a son: Stan Jolly and wife Rita of Union; a niece: Linda Carlin and husband Dennis of Wellington, FL; a sister-in-law: Ethel Jolly of Union; 3 grandchildren: Stanton Jolly and wife Ashely, Amy J. Jolley and husband Jason, and Kimberly J. Adams; three great-grandchildren: Collin Adams, Brice Jolley and Reese Jolley. Mr. Jolly was predeceased by a sister, Tessie Jolly and a brother, Stanley Wilson Jolly.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held immediately following the services in the chapel.

Agnes Ruth Harris
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Agnes Ruth Willard Harris, age 89, widow of Woodrow W. Harris of Union, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Harris was born in Union, July 11, 1921, a daughter of the late Isaac and Nettie Miller Willard. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a retired bookkeeper with Union Federal Savings and Loan. Mrs. Harris was a member of Crestview Baptist Church and served at Westside Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher, a choir member, and a member of the WMU.

Mrs. Harris is survived by a sister-in-law: Lavern Willard; a brother-in-law: Randolph Whitehead both of Union and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by a sister, Doris W. Whitehead and a brother, Hazel Willard.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Crestview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Josh Freeman. Burial will be at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Former members of Westside Baptist Church choir and members of Crestview Baptist Church choir are all asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Sarah Fant Jones
Union,S.C.

Miss Sarah Fant Jones of East Main St., Union, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after complications from an extended illness.

Miss Jones was born in Union, a daughter of the late Dudley Norman Jones and Ora Fant Jones. She was a graduate of Union High School, Converse College and the Union Seminary in New York for organ study. Miss Jones had devoted her life to her music as a piano instructor and as an organist for several churches in the area including, Cane Creek Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Grace United Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church. She was the Founder and Director of the Sarah Jones Chorale, a life member and past president of the Union Music Club, a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, the Woman’s Study Club, past president and member of the Union Historical Society, founder and first president of the Preservation Society of Union Co. and a member of the American Guild of Organists.

Surviving are nephews: Norman Fant Jones, Jr. and wife Rebecca and their children, Fant and Hanna Betsill Jones of Mt. Pleasant, David W. Jones, DMD and wife Margie Ann and their sons, Hudson D. and Coleman A. Jones of Spartanburg; Robert B. Jones and wife Ann and their daughter, Sarah Jones of Santa Fe, NM and Andrew W. Jones and his sons, Matthew and Michael Jones of Richardson, TX. Miss Jones was predeceased by a brother, Norman Fant Jones, Sr.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Sanders Read. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Members of the Union Music Club and the Sarah Jones Chorale are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:45 PM Wednesday in the church parlor prior to the services.

Mr. Guy Everett Gibson, age 83, husband of Trula Valentine Gibson of 8264 Lockhart Rd., Sharon, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gibson was born in Lockhart, April 6, 1927 a son of the late Leroy and Elizabeth Gregory Gibson. He was retired from Fluor Daniel Construction and was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII. Mr. Gibson was a member of Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Elizabeth Hewitt and husband Randy of Sharon; two sons: Miles "Topper" Gibson of Lockhart and Steve Gibson and wife Donna of Spartanburg; two step-daughters: Lenora Medlin of Hodges and Nellie Sue Magaha of Honea Path; one step-son: Mike Walker of Greenwood; four sisters: Lena Mae Ramsey and Doris Inman both of Sharon, Betty Horton and Azalee Ashe both of Lockhart; three brothers: Harold and Donald Gibson both of Sharon and Marvin Gibson of Hickory Grove; and a number of grandchildren and great-grand children. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by two sons: Bobby Dean Gibson and Guy E. Gibson, Jr. ; a sister: Francis Cruce and two brothers: Pete and Robert Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, March 28, 2011 at Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Ned Worstall. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mary Varner Sox
Lexington, SC

Funeral services for Mary Varner Sox, 83, will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 26, 2011 at St. David Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM this evening at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. David Lutheran Church, 132 St. Davids Church Rd., West Columbia, SC 29170 or to the American Cancer Society, 127 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Sox was born October 18, 1927 in Union and passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011. She was a daughter of the late Mige S. And Fujie Roark Varner. Mrs. Sox graduated from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and had worked as a registered nurse. She was a member of St. David Lutheran Church. Mrs. Sox helped organize the Cub Scout program and was the leader for five years. She was a member of the Women of the ELCA, the David Sunday School Class and a volunteer for the Lowman Home. Mrs. Sox was also a volunteer for the Lexington County Blood Mobile. She was a member of the Oak Grove Homemakers’ Club and the Lexington Literary Club.

Mrs. Sox is survived by her sons, Michael Sox (Retha) of Lexington, Steve Sox (Penny) of Columbia and Randy Sox (Monette) of Lexington; six grandchildren, Stacey Sox Gross (Kevin), Stephanie Sox, Philip Sox, Joey Sox, Lauren Sox and Victoria Sox; two great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Vera Beck of North Augusta, Evelyn Brown of Union, Lillian Thompson of Aiken, Faith Edland of Greer, Lillie Kirby of Union, Linda Bishop of Union and Carol Stepp of North Augusta and one brother, Robert Varner of Jonesville. She was predeceased by her husband Herbert F. Sox and sister, Vallree Blitchington.

John Douglas Meador, Sr.

Mr. John Douglas Meador, Sr, age 86 of 739 Beltline Rd., Union, SC, widower of Gladys Rainwater Meador, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Spartanburg Hospital Restorative Care. He was first married to the late Helen Manley Meador.

Mr. Meador was born in Union County, SC August 12, 1924, a son of the late Leon Brown Meador and Estelle Berry Meador. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr.Meador was a former Textile worker and had also worked as Wood-yard Manager for Catawba Timber. He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he was a member of Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class; a van driver; a member of the Mon Aetna Brotherhood and also a member of the Santuc Masonic Lodge. Mr. Meador was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II.

Surviving are four daughters: Brenda Jolly of Union, Hope Deans and husband William of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Emily Jolly and husband Michael Jolly, Sr of Rock Hill and Marjory Meador of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter-in-law Kathy Meador of Spartanburg; a sister, Janie Ellen Harkins and husband Franklin of Martha Franks Retirement Home, Laurens; a sister-in-law, Florence Barnette Meador of Union; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr.

Meador was predeceased by a son, John D. Meador, Jr; a brother, Leon Berry Meador; a sister, Carolyn Meador Crenshaw; a brother-in-law, Cenus Crenshaw and a son-in-law, Samuel S. Jolly.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Bobby Maurice Crocker, Sr.
Whitmire, SC

Mr. Bobby Maurice Crocker, Sr, age 78, husband of Patricia Gist Crocker of 25609 Hwy 121, Whitmire, SC died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Crocker was born in Union County, SC, August 16, 1932, a son of the late David Artice Crocker and Thelma Garner Crocker. He was a graduate of Whitmire High School and had attended Presbyterian College. Mr. Crocker was a member of Whitmire Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He retired from Cone Mills, John Wolfe Division, and was owner and operator of The Frame Shop in Whitmire.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Beth Crocker; a son, Mickey Crocker and wife Carol all of Greenville; four grandchildren: Rett Crocker, Rebekah Crocker, Andrew Crocker and Shaw Crocker all of Greenville and an aunt, Viola O’Dell of Union.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Whitmire Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Sanders Read and Rev. Marion Boozer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

William C. Gault, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. William C. “Goat” Gault, Sr., age 77, husband of Pearl Walker Gault, of 812 Philippi Church Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 21, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Gault was born in Union County, SC April 15, 1933, a son of the late Robert Gault, Sr. and Lula Scales Gault . Mr. Gault retired from Palmetto Repair and Supply and also worked at Ottaray Mill for 20 years. He was a member of Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church; Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge # 203 and also served with the Philippi Fire Department for 40 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife Pearl W. Gault, are two daughters: Vickie Henson and husband Mike of Roebuck and Debra Horne and husband Donald of Jonesville; a son, Billy Gault and girlfriend Jodi Bagwell of Union; two sisters: Hazel Patterson and husband Cecil of Jonesville and Mary Culpepper of Augusta, Ga; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Gault was predeceased by two brothers: Robert and Donald Gault.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Frank W. Williams
West Springs, S.C.

Mr. Frank Warden Williams age 73, widower of Joyce West Williams of Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Williams was born in Laurens Co. SC, June 2, 1937 a son of the late John and Sarah Tuck Williams. He was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where he was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Club and the Frieda Fuller Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a daughter: Teresa "Teesie" West and husband Kenneth of West Springs; a son: Darryl Williams and Leann also of West Springs; two granddaughters: Kendra Horne and husband Brad and Chrystal Coffer and husband Scott; two grandsons: Coty Williams and Kyle Williams; four great-grandchildren: Gabrielle Manus, Trenton Horne, Kennedy Coffer and Karsyn Coffer; two sisters: Margaret Tuck and Geraline Wilson both of Spartanburg; one brother: Johnny Williams and wife Vivian of Georgia; special friends: Dennis Stevens, Charlie Vinson and Harrell Timmis all of West Springs and many special nieces and nephews.

Mr. Williams was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson, and Mr. William’s nephew, Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bryan West, Scott West, Eddie Lawson, Ira Lawson, Ray Vinson, and Tim Stevens.

Mrs. Daisy Birdette Bogan Sanders, age 93, widow of James Carl Sanders, Sr., of 149 Sanders Rd., Union, SC., died, March 20, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Sanders was born in West Springs, April 15, 1917, a daughter of the late A. P. Bogan and Daisy West Bogan. She was a graduate of West Springs High School and a faithful member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mrs. Sanders was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Sanders was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are three sons: James Carl "Jimmy" Sanders, Jr. and wife Janis of Greenwood, SC, William A. "Billy" Sanders and wife Marlene, and Ray S. Sanders and wife Mary all Union; five grandchildren: James C. "Jay" Sanders, III, Jennifer S. Jenkins and husband Matt, William Jefferey Sanders, Susan S. Myrick and husband Ryan and Stacie S. Boan and husband Brian; eight great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Alice Sanders of Union; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sanders was predeceased by a brother: Harry A. Bogan.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, March 21, 2011 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Reford Charles Turner, Jr.
Union, S.C.

Mr. Reford Charles Turner, Jr., age 58 of 3025 Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Turner was born in Union, December 1, 1952 a son of Betty Jo Moore Turner of the home and the late Reford Charles Turner, Sr. He was a graduate of Union High School and Carson Newman College. Mr. Turner was employed with the S.C. Dept. Of Corrections - Tyger River Facility for over 32 years. He was a devoted member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association. Mr. Turner was also a retired Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserves and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a granddaughter reared in the home, Kaylee Woody; a daughter: Chrissy Turner-Woody of Columbia and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Victory Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jackie Carrigan and Rev. John Smith. Burial will be in Brown’s Creek Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Grady, Carlton Chastain, Ben Ivey, Billy Morris, Tim Harrison, Dale Neal and Freddie Crawford.

Mrs. Allene Ford Crocker, age 85, wife of Forrest J. Crocker, Sr., of Churchill St., Union died Friday, March 18, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Crocker was born in Buffalo, April 29, 1925, a daughter of the late Ernest T. Ford and Mae Douglas Ford. She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and a graduate of Savannah State College where she received an Associates Degree in Child Development . Mrs. Crocker was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter: Elaine Brinson and husband Eddie of Savannah, GA; a daughter-in-law: Mary Crocker of Savannah, GA; one sister: Barbara Ford Puckett of Union; one sister-in-law: Billie Crocker of Atlanta, GA; four grandsons: Trey Brinson and wife Nikki, Jay Crocker and wife Stephanie, Garrett Brinson and wife Layla and Chris Crocker; two great-granddaughters, Emmalee and Leighton Brinson and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Crocker was predeceased by two sons, Jack and Randy Crocker and also three sisters: Faye Wilbanks, Wilma Mayes and Izez Sumner.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Chuck Parrott, Rev. Jack Bratton and Rev. Robert Branch.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the church.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Harmony Care Hospice and her care giver, Pam Autry for all the love and concern shown to Mrs. Crocker.

Mr. Ezra William "Jack" Helton, Jr., age 79, husband of Nell Arrington Helton, formerly of Brittany Manor, Union, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Helton was born in Cowetta Co. GA, June 23, 1931, a son of the late E.W. Helton, Sr. and Alma Johnson Helton. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Bonitz Insulation. Mr. Helton was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a special friend, Hunter Carter. Mr. Helton was predeceased by three sons.

A memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March20, 2011 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Michael Wingertsahn. The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Mrs. Mary Sinclair Stevens, age 77, widow of Gerald D. Stevens, formerly of West Springs, died Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stevens was born in Buffalo, SC November 4, 1933, a daughter of the late W.R. Sinclair and Janie Robertson Sinclair. She formerly worked thirty years for Milliken & Company Excelsior Plant and ten years for Spartan Mills. Mrs. Stevens was a faithful member of West Springs Baptist Church where she was a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class and a former Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Stevens also served as assistant church pianist, a member of the WMU and the Young At Heart Group.

Surviving are a daughter, Tami Garrett and husband Scott; a son, Brad Stevens and wife Karen all of West Springs; a sister, Jane S. Fowler and husband David of Union; three brothers: Steve Sinclair and wife Jackie of Union, Bill Sinclair of Spartanburg, Stanley Sinclair and wife Karen of Chapin; a sister-in-law, Donna Edens and husband Robert; a brother-in-law, Dennis Stevens and wife Joan all of West Springs; five grandchildren: Leslie Register and husband Jeremy of Moore, Carly S. Painter and husband Trent of Pauline, Grayson Garrett, Mary Ashton Garrett and Alex Garrett all of West Springs; two great-grandchildren: Riley Register of Moore and Ava- Reese Painter of Pauline and special caregivers: Alice Sanders, Joan Kent, Gloria Gowan and Donna Edens.

Mrs. Stevens was predeceased by a daughter, Cindy Annette Stevens; two sisters: Clara Mae Lunsford and Peggy Sinclair and a brother, W.R.Sinclair, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 19, 2011 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brent Dowis and Rev. Gorden Thorton.

Mrs. Laura Eaves Comer, age 89 of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 13, 2011. Mrs. Comer was the widow of Harry H. Comer.

Mrs. Comer was born in Union County, SC January 20, 1922, a daughter of the late Paul R. Eaves and Sibbie Morris Eaves. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and was a loving, caring person who loved her family. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Jennie C. Peay and husband Tony of Buffalo; a son, Danny Comer and wife Julie of Union; three sisters: Essie M. Vinson , Kitty Vinson both of Union and Ann Sprouse of Jonesville; a brother, Weldon Eaves of Union; six grandchildren: Marty Reardon, Michelle Brock (Junior), Peggy Gault (Ron), Lori Comer, Josh Comer (Amber) and Amy Queen (Pat); four great-grandchildren: Corey Brock, Paige Brock, Abby Queen and Elijah Comer and a great-great-grandchild, Hunter Brock. Mrs. Comer was predeceased by a sister and five brothers.

Rev. William Shepherd Whitener

Rev. William Shepherd Whitener, age 93, of Oakmont Nursing Home went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. He was married to the late Ruth Stribble Whitener for seventy-two years.

Rev. Whitener was born in Union County, SC, May 2, 1917, a son of the late William Marcus Whitener and Fannie Lambright Whitener. He was a Veteran of the US Army Air Corps having served in World War II. Rev.

Whitener was a retired Southern Baptist minister and was formerly employed with Cone Mills Carlisle Finishing Plant. He was the founder of Covenant Baptist Church in September 1980 and had a long career as a Baptist minister serving Union County. Rev. Whitener was a life member of Union Masonic Lodge # 75 and a Past Master of Rutledge Lodge # 351 A.F.M. On January 31, 2010, Rev. Whitener was presented the 60 year award by the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina.

Surviving are a son, Robert Shepherd Whitener and wife Deborah of Charlotte, NC; a daughter-in-law, Andrea Trantham Whitener of Union; five grandchildren: William Allen Whitener, Thomas Eric Whitener both of Union, David Shepherd Whitener of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Hames Whitener of Ocla, FL and Paul Thomas Whitener of Raleigh, NC; a great-granddaughter, Kristin Caroline Whitener of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Rev. Whitener was predeceased by a son, Paul William Whitener, five sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Charles Parrott. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Jimmy Lee Pierce, Sr., age 75, husband of Betty Murphy Pierce of 847 Lula Green Rd., Carlisle, SC went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 13, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Pierce was born in Ringgold, Georgia February 19, 1937, a son of the late James A. Pierce and Gladys Woody Pierce. He was a Veteran of the US Navy; formerly worked for Carlisle Finishing Company and was owner and operator of Tyger River Hunting Preserve.

Mr. Pierce was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and a former member of Salem Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. He was a member of Santuck Masonic Lodge #227 and Union Lodge #75, Scottish Rites and York Rites; Hejaz Shriners and also a member of the Archeological Society of SC. Jimmy was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his wife Betty of fifty-six years are twosons: Tony Pierce and Jimmy Pierce, Jr both of Union; a grandson, Samuel James Pierce and wife Erin of Ft. Drum, NY.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Benny Green.

Mr. Hyatt was born in Union, September 15, 1938, a son of Fannie Ruth Gist Hyatt and the late Sidney S. Hyatt. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and attended Spartanburg Junior College. Mr. Hyatt retired from Milliken Company after 42 years of service. He was a

member of the Bogansville United Methodist Church and the church’s Men’s Club. A Mason, he was a member of Prudence Masonic Lodge # 139 in Jonesville.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Linda Youngblood and husband Brent of Putman; two sons, Roger W. Hyatt and wife, Vickie and Ben S. Mrs. Mireille Timotio “Mimi” Belue, age 85 of 9200 Glen Water Drive, Charlotte, NC, widow of Richard “Mickey” Belue, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at University Nursing & Rehab in Charlotte, NC.

Mrs. Belue was born in Auboue, France, February 3, 1926, a daughter of the late Joachim Timotio and Marie-Louise Altemarie Timotio. She immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island after meeting and falling in love with Richard Belue of Union, SC, who was stationed in Paris at the end of World War II. Mimi and Richard married in Union, SC and lived together in Rock Hill, Lancaster and Sumter, SC. She later in life relocated to Garden City, SC to be close to her daughter, Cindy Finney. She finally moved to the Charlotte, NC area to live near her daughter, Vivian Moody of Charlotte, NC and her son, Mark Belue of Harrisburg, NC.

Surviving are two daughters: Vivian B. Moody of Charlotte, NC and Cindy B. Finney of Surfside Beach, SC; a son, Mark O. Belue of Harrisburg, NC; five grandchildren: Chrystal Petro, Joe Moody, Jr.both of Charlotte, NC, Anthony Finney of Murrells Inlet, SC, Philip Belue and Michele Belue both of Harrisburg, NC; four great-grandchildren: Cheyenne Petro, Gabriel Petro, Justus Petro all of Charlotte, NC and Rowan Finney of Murrells Inlet, SC.

Ms. Sprouse was born in Buffalo, September 21, 1929, a daughter of the late Robert and Hazel Lankford Sprouse. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from United Merchants having worked in both Union and Buffalo Plants. Ms. Sprouse was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Wade was born in Union, SC, December 20, 1925, a daughter of the late George Smith and Luna Dixon Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Westside Baptist Church of Chester.

Surviving are a son, Lynn and wife Louise of Chester; two granddaughters: Amanda Kimble of York and Christel Roberts of Gaffney; a grandson, Scott Gibson of Union; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Billy Franklin Abee, age 68, of 517 Toluca St., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 4, 2011.

Mr. Abee was born in Florence, SC, March 20, 1942 a son of the late Vernon VesterAbee and Irene Decker Abee Childers. He was retired from Cone Mill and was an avid gardner and wood carver, having co-founded the Union Carving Group which he hosted every week at his home for the past several years. He played the guitar for the gospel group the Pathlighters, also was the guitarist at his church, Victory Baptist Church, and enjoyed playing guitar with his friends.

Mr. Abee was listed in the fourth volume of "Who’s Who in Indian Relics" as a member of the Piedmont Archaeology Society which includes SC, NC, VA and Tenn. He was also a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75, the Historical Society of Union Co. and the Romeo Club. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His children were the apple of his eye, his grandchildren are grand, but the great-grandchildren are great he always said.

Mr. Abee was the husband of Carolyn Holcombe Abee for fifty years and they would have celebrated their anniversary on March 11, 2011. He was also survived by a son: Johnny Abee and wife Cynthia, and a daughter: Tammie Brewington and husband David all of Union; grandchildren: Heather Gregory and husband Dean, Ashley Harrold and husband Brandon, Jennifer Arrington and husband Trey, Daniel Abee and fiancée Sarah Kate Dees, Matthew Abee and wife Betsy; great-grandchildren: Michael Dean Gregory, Jr. and Jonah Trey Arrington; a sister: Ellen Duckett of Whitmire ; a brother: Vernon Abee of Union ; special friend Fred (Bubba) Howard who was like a son. Mr. Abee was predeceased by a sister: Mary Alice Cranford and a brother, Robert Lee Abee.

Mr. Broadus Able, age 91, widower of Mary Fowler Able, formerly of N. Church St., Union, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Mr. Able was born in Wagner, SC, April 12, 1919 a son of the late Newton and Nora Ward Able. He was retired from Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. and was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. Mr. Able was a member of the Union Masonic Lodge # 75, the Union York Rites Bodies, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the Greenville Masonic Lodge of Perfection and was a Shriner International. He was also a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter: Delores A. Whitehead and husband Bryon of Easley; a son: William T. Mr. Able was predeceased by a great-grandson, Jack Whitehead; two sisters: Vallie Scott, Vera Mundy and one brother, Newton H. Able.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Members of the Lynn Eaves Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 3:45 PM Sunday prior to the service at the church.

Betty D. Shetley

Mrs. Betty Jo Dehart Shetley, age 69, widow of James Frank Shetley of 228 Shetley Rd., Union, passed away, Thursday, March 3, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Shetley was born in Union, May 27, 1941, a daughter of the late Robert and Kellie Robinson Bevis. She was retired from Her Majesty and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mr. Shetley was a past president of the Open Hand CB Club. She was a loving wife mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters: Cheryl Smith and husband Randy and Kathy Shetley all of Union; two sons: Allen "Tank" Shetley and wife Sherry and Robby Shetley all of Union; two grandsons: Brad Shetley and Teddy Mull both of Union; three sisters-in-law: Susan Lovelace of Simpsonville, Judy Cooksey and husband Fred of Union and Mary Ann Duckett and husband Gene of Cowpens; one brother-in-law: Ronnie Shetley and wife Lisa of Union; and several step grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Mrs. Shetley was predeceased by a sister, Joan Burgess.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Duckett, Ricky Duckett, David Duckett, David Putnam, Derrick Duckett and Neil Shetley.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the service.

Minnie Sly Sims

A Celebration of Life service for Miss Minnie Sly Sims, who passed away in December, will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 5, 2010 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Miss Sims was born in Union, March 14, 1912 a daughter of the late Arthur David Sims and Jessie Lawson Sims. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Co., Execelsor Mill after 40 years. A charter member of Philippi Baptist Church, Miss Sims was a former choir member, Sunday School teacher, G.A. Leader, Vacation Bible School worker and was a member of the Women’s Sunday School Class #4. Miss Sims was a devoted Christian, following the teachings of Christ, and led and exemplary life to all who knew her.

Surviving are one sister: Lillie Esposito and husband Greg of Rome, NY; a sister-in-law: Janie Sims of Union; nieces and nephews: Brenda Alexander and husband Carrol , Kathy Bobo and husband Gene and Roger Gregory and wife Kathy and Lynn Gregory all of Union, Sandra Pachecol and husband Ted and Ron Cook and wife Betty all of Asheville, NC, Carol Craig and husband Dave of Seattle, WA, Anita Holcombe and husband Butch of Acworth, GA, Karen Spindler of Rome, NY, Dianne Comeaux and husband George of Jacksonville, FL, David Esposito and wife DaLee and Greg Esposito and wife Becky all of Coral Springs, FL,and Judy Jett and husband Bill of Taylors; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Miss Sims was predeceased by a sister: Jessie Sims Cook and three brothers: Fred Sims, A.D. Sims, Jr. and Marion "Peck" LeGrand Sims.

Gladys Meador

Mrs. Gladys Mae Meador, age 83, wife of John D. Meador, Sr. of 739 Beltline Rd., Union, passed away Monday, February 28, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Meador was born in Hephzibah, GA, May 12, 1927 and was a high school graduate. She formerly worked for Conso Products and was a homemaker. Mrs. Meador was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was active in the Peggy Williams Sunday School class and the Winnie Couch Circle having served as treasurer for both.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four step-daughters: Hope Deans and Marjory Meador both of Mt. Pleasant, Brenda Jolly of Union and Emily Jolly of Rock Hill; a daughter-in-law: Kathy Meador of Union; 9 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs. Meador was predeceased by a step-son, John D. Meador, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Jolly, Jim Smith, Frank Bobo, Brad Jolly, John Kingsmore and Butch Dill.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Thursday prior to the services at the church.

Memorials may be made to Mon Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC, 29379.
