Anna Marie Breuer Pharr
Union, SC

Mrs. Anna Marie Breuer Pharr, 91, wife of the late Mack E. Pharr of Union, SC was taken to reside with Our Lord on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Mrs. Pharr was born June 30, 1920 in Berlin, Germany to Heinrich and Marie Breuer. She was the oldest child and only girl of seven children. Anna met and married her husband Mack while he was stationed in Germany during his military service to our country. Mr. & Mrs. Pharr made Union, SC their home and after Mr. Pharr’s retirement from the service. Mrs. Pharr has resided with her daughter Dina Sweatt of Groveland, Florida for the past five years.

Mrs. Pharr is survived by five of her six children: Mr. Pete Pharr (wife Gail) of Kissimmee, FL, Mrs. Mary Duncan (husband Ralph) of Union, SC, Mrs. Dina Sweatt (husband Richard) of Groveland, Fl, Mr. Rainer Pharr (wife Becky) of Siler City, NC and Mrs. Doris Yarbrough (husband Bill) of Whitmire, SC., and preceded in death by daughter Mildred Ann Roark (late husband Kenneth) of Union, SC. Mrs. Pharr is also survived by one brother: Hans Breuer of Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Pharr has eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, December 2, 2011 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home. Mrs. Pharr will be buried in Union Memorial Gardens beside her late husband.

Jerry Wayne “Tootie” Moss
Union, SC

Mr. Jerry Wayne “Tootie” Moss, age 60 of 203 Gault Avenue, Union, SC passed away Sunday, November 27, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Moss was born in Union, SC June 16, 1951, a son of the late Olson Charles Moss and Louise Harvey Moss.

Surviving are two sisters: Deborah Lane and husband Tommy of Union and Shirley Moss of Blacksburg. Mr. Moss was predeceased by two sisters, Martha Fowler and Ruth Murphy and two brothers, Larry Moss and J.E. Moss.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

The family is at the home of his sister, Deborah and Tommy Lane, 733 Wilson Rd., Union, SC 29379.

Doretha Ann Shirley Goodson
Union, SC

Mrs. Doretha Ann Shirley Goodson, age 77, of Union, widow of Gay C. Goodson, went home to be with the Lord Monday, November 28, 2011 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Goodson was born in Union, SC July 14, 1934, a daughter of the late Frazier Shirley and Ruth Middlebrooks Shirley. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Mon Aetna Child Enrichment Center and had also worked at USC Union and Milliken & Co - Monarch Plant. Mrs. Goodson was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a former GA Leader, Nursery Worker, Choir Member and a member of Connie Springs Sunday School Class. She also was a former Cub Master of Troop 48.

Surviving are a daughter, Tempi Wade; a son, Clint Goodson, Jr and wife Margaret; a brother, Freddie Shirley and wife Leila; three grandchildren: Josie Wade, Kody Palmer and Gayson Palmer all of Union. Mrs. Goodson was predeceased by three sisters: Marjorie Morris, Virginia Redmon and Ethel S. Russell.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, Rev. Dr. Herb Garrett, Rev. Bill Adams and Mr. Jerry Gossett. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Goodson’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers: Dennis Russell, Phil Russell, Michael Redmon, Brian Morris, William Earl Sprouse and Harold Lawson. Members of Connie Springs Sunday School Class, Mary Inglett and Jerry and Cathy Gossett are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6:30-8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Joseph Carl Edwards, Jr.
Union, S.C.

Mr. Joseph Carl Edwards, Jr. , age 77, husband of Mary Burnett Edwards of 202 Spring St., Union, passed away at his home Thursday, November 24, 2011.

Mr. Edwards was born in Buffalo, April 21, 1934, a son of the late Joseph Carl Edwards, Sr. and Sarah Elvia Livesty Edwards. He was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and was a formerly a member of the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Edwards was a member of the Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Mary Jo Mathis of Union; a son: Richard Carl Edwards of Spartanburg; a step-son: Bobby Jackson, Jr. And wife Barbara of Lockhart; two sisters: Sally Epps of Blair and Judy Hagan of Union; three brothers: Gene A. Edwards and Thomas E. Edwards both of Union and Harry Douglas Edwards of Inman; four grandchildren: Adam Edwards, Aleigh Edwards, Melissa Foster, and David Sumner; two step-grandchildren: Stephanie Strong and Wendy Jackson; and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a step-daughter: Lynn Jackson, a grandson: Scottie Sumner and three sisters: Lucille Wyley, Mildred Snowden and Reva Queen; one brother: Emmett Edwards.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, November 27, 2011 at the Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers Joseph Edwards, Eddie Edwards, Joey Harris, Willie Harris, Jimmy Lawson and Gene A. Edwards, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Halon Duckett, Ronnie Dean Duckett, Shaw Johnson and Will Burnette.

Jimsie Elizabeth Bentley
Union, S.C.

Miss Jimsie Elizabeth (Vaughan) Bentley, age 59, of 121 Francis Ave. , Union, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2011 after a four year battle with cancer.

Miss Bentley was born in Union, July 25, 1952, a daughter of the late Aileen Moore Vaughan Bentley and James (Jimmy) Vaughan and later adopted by George (Buck) Bentley. She was reared in the home of her maternal grandparents, Katie and Arthur Moore. Miss Bentley was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School and the University of South Carolina.

Miss Bentley was a devoted member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she served as church secretary, membership and financial secretary, secretary of the administrative board and teacher of the Marion Conard Sunday School class.

Surviving are an aunt: Mrs. Mary Sprouse of California; a half-brother: Terry Bentley of Georgia; a nephew: Alex Jay (AJ) Bentley of Alabama; a special cousin: Mrs. Beverly Adams and husband Theron of Union; special friends: Toni Henderson, Ned and Laura Farr all of Union and her beloved pet, Sam.

Funeral services will 2:00PM Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Cato, Rev. Alan Quarles and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Marvin Montgomery, Bob Humphries, Jeff Reynolds, Wayne Grady, David Paige and Stan Eaves. Past and present members of the Wesley Chapel Administrative Board, Kathryn Eaves, Audrey and Mariah Boler and Joyce Humphries are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Gorgi Anna Price Lipsey, age 39, wife of David B. Lipsey, of 127 Rockport Way, Pacolet, passed away, Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Lipsey was born in Raleigh, NC, September 18, 1972, a daughter of Rev. Angelia Powell Price of Spartanburg and the late Rev. Clayton Z. Price. She was an English Literature teacher with Spartanburg Co. District 7, at Spartanburg High School and was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lipsey was a graduate of Jonesville High School and the University of South Carolina, Upstate Campus.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a son: Jordan David Lipsey of the home; her mother-in-law: Anne Lipsey of Jonesville; two aunts: Joan Davis and Gaynell Meredith and husband James all of Wilmington, NC; a brother-in-law: Gene “Doc” Lipsey and wife Nancy of Jonesville; and a nephew Kyle Lipsey of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 25, 2011, at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson and Rev. Doug Gilliland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Rocky Cooper, Bryan Robinson, Chip Bailey, Will Hickson, Pat Littlejohn, Mitchell Moss, Ronnie Jenkins and Mike Massey.

Former and current members of Coach Lipsey’s coaching staffs are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Mrs. Shelby Jones Barber, age 69, of 121 Lukesville Rd., Buffalo, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Barber was born in Union, August 21, 1942 a daughter of the late Casey and Carrie Black Jones. She retired as a nursing assistant, having worked at Oakmont of Union and Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Barber was of the Baptist faith and was a loving sister, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter Rachel Barber of the home; two sons: Kerry Lankford of the home and Robin Lankford and wife Susan of Buffalo; a brother: Dan Jones and wife Wanda of Hendersonville, NC; four grandchildren: Trevor Lankford, Brooke Lankford, Courtney Lankford and Kelvin Lankford; and two great-grandchildren: Jamir Tucker and Cayden Lankford.

Mrs. Barber was predeceased by a brother: Carol Jones.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Naomi K. Bates
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Naomi Knox Bates, age 85, formerly of 158 Ellis St., Union, passed away with her children by her side, Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Bates was born in Union, October 13, 1926, a daughter of the late Gettys Knox and Daisy Davis Knox Williams. She was retired from Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and was a member of McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Carolyn B. Watson and husband Hugh, and Wanda B. Calhoun and husband Tommy all of Union; two sons: George L. Bates, Jr. and wife Betty and Joseph Burton Bates all of Union; two sisters: Shirley Brannon and Brenda Shetley both of Union; a brother Claudie Williams of Union; four grandchildren: Mandy Kitchen, Jeff Bates and Chip Calhoun all of Union and Tiffany Berry of Cross Anchor; nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bates was predeceased by two grandsons: Burton Bates, Jr. and George Bates, III ; a grand-daughter: Shelly Calhoun; two sisters, Willie Wood and Louise Black and four brothers: Ralph Knox, Harold Knox, Bobby Knox and Olin Knox.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Eddie Saxon. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 PM prior to the service in the chapel.

Mrs. Nora Sibley Paige, age 57, widow of Jerry Dean Paige, formerly of Jonesville, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice Home in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Paige was born in Chester, August 6, 1954, a daughter of the late William and Virginia Barnett Sibley. She was employed with Blanchard Shell in Charlotte, NC and was a volunteer with the Blind Dog Rescue of Catawba.

Surviving are two daughters: Melissa Paige and Lisa Paige both of Rock Hill; a son: Wayne Paige of Jonesville; two sisters: Doris Macomson and husband William of Catawba and Christine Wright of Michigan; two brothers: David Sibley of Catawba and Billy Sibley and wife Linda of Gray, GA; a sister-in-law: Joanne Spencer of Pacolet; 2 nieces and 7 nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the S.R. Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. David Caughman. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service at the chapel.

Mr. Glenn E. Sherbert, age 63, husband of Ruth McCluney Sherbert of 3631 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, passed away, Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Hospice Home of Laurens Co.

Mr. Sherbert was born in Union, July 26, 1948, a son of the late Dansel and Gertrude Lawson Sherbert. He retired from Little Debbie Snack Cakes and was currently employed with the S.C. Dept of Corrections. Mr. Sherbert attended the University of South Carolina and was a member of Putman Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was also a Mason and a member of the Buffalo Fire Dept.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Jasmine Sherbert of the home; two sons: Chad Sherbert and wife Jessica of Buffalo and Dan Sherbert and wife Brooke of Greenville; three grandchildren: Summer, Brianna and Laine Sherbert; a sister, Ruby Freeman and a brother, Dennis Sherbert both of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Henderson, Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Steven Reagan. Burial will be in Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Vernelle S. “Nelle” Hyder
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Vernelle “Nelle” Sprouse Hyder, age 84, widow of W.E. Hyder of 213 Hyder Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Hyder was born in Union, October 30, 1927, a daughter of the late C.M. Sprouse and Mary Garner Sprouse. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School, attended Spartanburg Methodist College and received her Bachelors degree from Winthrop College. Mrs. Hyder was a school teacher with the Union Co. School System having retired as a librarian at Sims Middle School. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother: Don Sprouse and wife Mona of Chapin; three nieces: Pheobe Ann Crocker and husband Doyle, Flo Hines and husband Don all of Union, and Lisa Lee and husband Mike of Charlotte, NC; a nephew: Keith Parks and wife Carol of Union and several other great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hyder was predeceased by a sister, Phoebe Sprouse Parks and a brother, Kester Garner Sprouse.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, November 18, 2011 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Childers and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: Dennis Cooper, John Parks, Thomas Parks, Travis Crocker, Don Cody and Ralph Owings.

Robert Millwood
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Robert Millwood, age 67, of 334 Bobby Faucett Rd. Jonesville, SC., widower of Connie Neal Millwood went home to be with the Lord, Sunday afternoon, November 13, 2011.

Mr. Millwood was born April 10, 1944, a son of the late Foster Millwood and Louise Inman Millwood. He was formerly employed with Miliken and Company and was a member of Skull Shoals Baptist Church in Cherokee County. Mr. Millwood was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is survived by his very special niece, Becky Wade with whom his made his home, a niece, Joyce Toney of Union; a nephew, Clay Millwood and wife Deloris of Chester; a special cousin, Joe Smith of Gaffney and several other nieces, nephews and cousins . Mr. Millwood was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters: Bill Millwood, Early Millwood, Fred Millwood, Clyde Millwood, Lee Millwood, Hope Millwood, Mary Henderson and Nellie Petty.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, November15, 2011 at Skull Shoals Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Phillips and the Rev. Gonzalee Childers. Burial will follow in Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Clay Millwood, Bryant Toney, Jackie Smith, Bill Wade, Ron Poston and Rusty Millwood.

The family will receive friends Monday evening 6:30 until 8:30 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Elizabeth McDaniel Hogan, age 85, widow of James Lawson Hogan, formerly of Union, SC., died Sunday, November 13, 2011.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Union, SC., she is the daughter of the late William Sims McDaniel and Julia Lenora Hord McDaniel.

Surviving are two sons: Paul William Hogan of Union and Thomas Wayne Hogan of Gaffney; a sister: Frances M. Hogan of Woodruff; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Smith and two brothers: Malcomb McDaniel and Copeland McDaniel.

Evelyn Knox
Union, SC

Mrs. Evelyn Howell Knox, age 85, widow of Baxter Knox, formerly of 436 Oakland Rd., Union, SC., passed away November 12, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.
Mrs. Knox was born July 27, 1926, a daughter of the late Henry “Babe” Howell and Emma Howell. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church and retired from the United Merchants-Union Mill.

Survivors are a son: James T. Gregory and wife Linda; five grandchildren: Jamison Gregory and wife Dana, Bradley Gregory and special friend Maryann, Brooke Baldwin and husband William, Wendi Foster and husband Mark, and Clint Hutcherson and special friend Carmen; Eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister: Wilhelmina Kirby; and one brother: James Howell and wife Joan. Mrs. Knox was predeceased by one granddaughter Rada Gregory; two brothers: Woodrow Howell and William “Bill” Howell; four sisters: Fannie West, Virginia Brown, Rosa Lee Morgan and Myrtle Wilson.

Graveside service will be held at 3:00PM Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Robert Branch.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday, November 14, 2011 at
the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Betty Jo Jamerson
Chesapeake, VA

Mrs. Betty Jo Jamerson, age 79, formerly of Union and Jonesville, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Dominion Village, Residential Assisted Living, Chesapeake, VA.

Betty Jo was born in Union County, March 13, 1932 the eldest daughter of the late Carl Victor and Annie Belle Going Vinson. She graduated from Jonesville High School as the Class of 1950 Valedictorian, attended Spartanburg Junior College and worked for Associated Petroleum Carriers in Spartanburg and Milliken Tetra Pak in Jonesville. Betty Jo attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Union where she sang in the Choir.

Betty Jo was a career U.S. Navy spouse who lovingly supported her husband during his 28-year military career with assignments to California, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and Florida before retiring in Virginia.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years: Lawrence Massie (Goo) Jamerson of Virginia Beach, VA; her son: Lawrence Carlton (Larry) Jamerson and his wife Theresa of Centreville, VA. Betty Jo was predeceased by her sister: Celestine Gregory of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the Holcombe Funeral Chapel in Union conducted by the Rev. David Coughman. Burial will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Prior to the Service.

David Youngblood
Jonesville, SC

Mr. David Youngblood, age 63, of 153 Oakland Rd.,SC, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Hospice House of Laurens County.

Mr. Youngblood was born August 6, 1948, in Union, SC., the son of Donna Jean Mease Youngblood and the late James Ralph Youngblood. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mr. Youngblood was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Vietnam War, and he retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad after twenty-six years of service.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters: Scarlett Y. Mr. Paul Lee McCoy, age 72, husband of Emma Mae Dockery McCoy, of 201 Spring St., Union, SC., passed away Friday, November 11, 2011 at Mary Black Hospital.

Mr. McCoy was born August 27, 1939, in Union, SC., the son of the late Charlie McCoy and Margaret Baldwin McCoy. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church and was formerly employed with the Torrington Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Kathy McCoy Davis and Boyfriend, Michael Woods of Blacksburg; and Janet Lee McCoy and friend: Barbie Newton of Union; a sister: Frances Moss and husband, Harold of Union.

He was predeceased by a brother: Charles K. McCoy.

Graveside services will be held, Sunday, November 13, 2011at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. David Lewis.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Ratcliffe, Michael Woods, Mike Pearson, Ralph Lancaster, Lynn Moss and Brent Moss.

Mrs. Lula “Mert” Palmer Briggs, age 83 of 128 Country Rd., Lexington, SC, widow of Jerry Eugene Briggs, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Briggs was born in Union, SC December 29, 1927, a daughter of the late Joe P. Palmer and Sallie Blakely Palmer. She attended Mon Aetna Baptist Church and was a loving wife and mother.

Surviving are two daughters: Carol Kiparisus and husband George of the home and Debra Briggs of Columbia; three sons: Donald Briggs and wife Sue of Blythewood, Jerry Briggs and wife Pebbles and Todd Briggs all of Columbia; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by a grandson, John Charles Gregory, Jr.; three sisters: Opal P. Neely, Frances Morris and Mozelle Morris and three brothers, James Earl Palmer, J.P. Palmer and Harold Palmer.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Richard H. “Red” Sanders, Sr.
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Richard H. “Red” Sanders, Sr., age 73, husband of Shelby Reynolds Sanders of 1662 S. Jonesville Hwy., Jonesville, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Sanders was born in Union, SC March 22, 1938, a son of the late Preston Eugene Sanders, Sr and Mae Ola Ivey Sanders. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and had attended Cecils Business College. Mr. Sanders retired from S.C. Department of Corrections and was previously employed with Kohler & Co. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and also served in the South Carolina National Guard - Jonesville Unit.

Mr. Sanders was a faithful lifelong member of Gilead Baptist Church where he served as Trustee, Finance Committee, Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, Usher and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Sanders was owner and operator of Big Sandy Farms since 1972. He was also a member of the Union County Cattleman’s Association where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was named Outstanding District Cooperator by Union Soil and Conservation in April 2000. Mr. Sanders was a loving and faithful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was an avid cattleman.

Surviving in addition to his loving wife of fifty years are two daughters: Sherry Sanders McKie and husband Felix of North Augusta, SC and Sara Ann Sanders Roark and husband Kenneth of Union; two sons: Jimmy E. Sanders and wife Keilah of Jonesville and Richard H. Sanders, Jr. and wife Deborah of Boiling Springs; three grandchildren: Jessica Sanders Henderson and husband Leif of Myrtle Beach, David E. Roark of Spartanburg and Kasie Lynn Roark of Union; two brothers: Lewis T. Sanders and wife Hazel of North Port, AL and Henry Sanders and wife Patsy of Charleston; a sister-in-law, Pauline Sanders of Union and a godson, Chad Gault of Pauline. Mr. Sanders was predeceased by a brother, Preston Eugene “Slim” Sanders, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2011 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Kicidis Leventis, widow of Pete Nicholas Leventis of 314 Glendale Rd., passed away, Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Leventis was born in Union, June 23, 1921, a daughter of the late Mitchell Dimitros Kicidis and Lillie Gregory Kicidis. She was a graduate of Union High School and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Mrs. Leventis was a very loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family.

Surviving are two daughters: Diane Leventis Douglass of Union, and Patricia Leventis Kicidis and husband Mike of Charlotte, NC; two brothers: Nicholas Kicidis and wife Grace of Myrtle Beach and Paul Mitchell Kicidis of Union; three grandchildren: Michelle K. Thomas of Charlotte, NC, Chuck Douglass and wife Audrea of Union and Chris Kicidis and wife Kim of Greenville; four great-granddaughters, Lillie, Mary Margaret, Claire and Avery; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Leventis was predeceased by a brother, James M. Kicidis.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum conducted by Rev. David Caughman. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.

Mr. James Edward Duckett, age 57, formerly of Union, passed away, Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Mr. Duckett was born in Union, December 2, 1953 a son of the late Olin and Lucille Wilson Duckett. Mr. Duckett was a graduate of Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

A life member of the Masonic Lodge # 75, Mr. Duckett was a member of the Hejaz Shriners, the Union York Rite Bodies, Scottish Rite Bodies, present Grand Royal Patron of the Grand Court of the Amaranth of South Carolina, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America and other appendant Masonic Bodies.

Surviving are his wife: Shirby Gentry Duckett; a daughter: Cathy Wood and husband Joel of Union; a granddaughter: Ashton Ward; two grandsons: Levi Wood and Gentry Wood; a great-grandson: Tycen Ward. Mr. Duckett was predeceased by a son, James W. Gentry and a brother, Horace Duckett.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The Masons will serve as active pallbearers.

Mr. William Curtis Brewington, age 52, formerly of Union, passed away, Friday, November 4, 2011 at his home in Mooresboro, N.C

Mr. Brewington was born in Union, October 19, 1959 a son of Bobby Gene and Carolyn Tingle Brewington of Union. He was a 1978 graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing. Mr. Brewington enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid sports fan.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter: Crystal Brewington; a son: Steven Brewington and wife Brooke all of Union; a sister; Angela Bright and husband Melvin of Union; three grandchildren: Joshua and Jada Tyler and McKenzie Brewington. Mr. Brewington was predeceased by a brother, Timothy Eugene Brewington.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hazel Betty Cooksey Rector, age 94, of Union passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Rector, widow of the late George Henry Rector, Jr. was born in Union October 14, 1917 to the late John Judson and Bessie Belle Burgess Cooksey. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Rector was a loving mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family. Her children and grandchildren will remember her as having “ the patience of an angel, the wisdom of a philosopher, the beauty of a queen and the love that shone on everyone.”
She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. William (Tomi) Vaughn, Jr., Mrs. Tony (Betsy) Trakas, Mrs. Paul (Jane) Wilkes III, and Mrs. Donald (Harriet) Cohen; nine grandchildren; Richard Owen, Charles Anthony Owen, Laura Williams, Cannon Cohen, Julie Bailey, Caroline Lawson, Clay Cohen, Derik Vanderford, and Paul Wilkes IV; sixteen great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and a special sister-in-law, Catherine Cooksey. She was predeceased by a son Richard Arthur Owen, two grandsons, Darrell Jay Owen and John Benjamin Owen, and three brothers, Charles, Fred, and Arthur Cooksey.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 3:00 PM at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. David Caughman. Burial will follow in the Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and the Grace United Methodist Church Care Group are asked to sit in a group.

The family will receive friends before the service at 2:00 PM today in the church parlor.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Bailey, 522 E. Main St. Union, SC 29379.

Mr. Jefferson Frazier “Jack” Keith, Jr., age 87, widower of Grace Silvers Keith, of 122 Sardis School House Rd., Union, SC., passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Landrum Hospice Home.

Mr. Keith was born in Union County, October 6, 1924, a son of the late Jefferson Frazier Keith, Sr. and Myrtle Garner Keith. He was a US veteran of WWII having served US Army and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. Mr. Keith was formerly employed with General Motors in New Jersey. He retired Bonson Construction in Winston Salem, NC. After retirement he worked on the cattle farm of his brother, Martin and Mary Sue Keith. He was an active member of The Woodman Lodge # 0323.

Surviving are a daughter: Brenda K. Frazier of Cross Keys; a son: Michael Ray Keith and wife Nancy of Jonesville; a son-in-law: Gerald Graham of Union. He was predeceased by a daughter: Jackie K. Graham. Four sisters and a brother survive Mr. Keith: Bertha Fowler, Nellie Jo Knox, Janie Ballinger, Marguerite Bushnel and Stonie Keith. He was predeceased by one sister: Ruth Free, four brothers: William Tanner, Martin, Robert and Conley Keith. Nine grandchildren survive Mr. Keith: Dana Grady, David Grady, David Byrd, Sherry Sizemore, Crystal Adams, Tammy Phillips, Chris Keith, John Keith and Lisa Nixon; sixteen great-grandchildren: Danny, Dustin, Devin, Makayla and Makenzie Grady, Whitney Smith, Jordan Sizemore, Aaron and Jacqueline Adams, Olivia Phillips, Wesley and Mackenzie Keith, Noah Nixon, Abigail Keith, Kenzlee and Hunter Keith.

Services were held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. John Cribb. Interment followed at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Dana Grady, David Grady, Chris Keith, Tim Sizemore, Steven Adams and Gerald Graham.

The family received friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Cornelia Smith Lawter

Mrs. Cornelia Smith “Neely” Lawter, age 87, formerly of 1115 West Main Street Union, died Tuesday evening at Oakmont of Union. She was the widow of James H. “Harry” Lawter.

Mrs. Lawter was born in Union, March 11, 1924, a daughter of the late Frank Smith and Bessie Edwards Smith. She was member of the Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and the Eugenia Smith Circle. She had formerly served as a board member of Union County Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Lawter was retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services and Milliken and Company.

Mrs. Lawter is survived by two daughters; Debbie Eaves and husband Lynn and Jane Valentine and husband Neil, all of Union; five sister: Ruth Parks, Louise Price, Sara White and husband Keith, and Joanne Sweatt, all of Union, and Betty Groce of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Kelly and Lynn Lawson, Brad and Brooke Valentine, Amy and Todd Davis, and Greg Eaves; six great-grandchildren, Harrison Lawson, Joseph Lawson, Carson Valentine, Abbie Valentine, Luke Davis, and Caroline Davis, and a very close friend, Lou Smith, of Union. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Smith.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Merritt Wentz. Interment will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Franklin Pridemore, Don Cohen, James Coffer, Wilbur Smith III, M. Brown Fant, Jr., and Wayne Lawson. Employees and Staff of Oakmont of Union and Harmony Care Hospice are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. George Tearl Ledford, age 84, husband of Mary Wofford Ledford of 396 Wofford Rd., Gaffney, SC, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home in Union.

Mr. Ledford was born in Chesnee, SC April 15, 1927, a son of the late Simpson and Guyneta Feagan Ledford. He was the retired owner, operator of Duncan Road Produce in Union and Mr. Produce in Spartanburg. Mr. Ledford was a Veteran of the US Navy, having served in World War II.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Jean Knox (Walter) of Union and Becky Roark (Patrick) of Spartanburg; three sons: Billy T. Ledford (Susan), Randy Ledford (Linda) all of Union and Mark Ledford (Cheryl) of Spartanburg; six grandchildren: Jennifer Ledford of Spartanburg, Brittany Ledford of Union, Andrea Thompson of Union, Elizabeth Birch (Kevin) of Greenwood, Jameson Knox of Spartanburg and Carol Brunson (William) of Spartanburg; a step-grandson, Rodney Hill of Spartanburg and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Ledford is predeceased by two brothers, Carlisle Ledford and Arthur Ledford and a sister, Madeline Broderick.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook.

George “Half-Pint” Adams, Sr.

Mr. George K. “Half-Pint” Adams, Sr., age 70, husband of Judy Heatherly Adams, of 191 Pasture Drive, Union, passed away suddenly Monday, October 31, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Adams was born in Union, SC July 17, 1941, a son of the late Bunyan “Bunt” Adams and Annie Mae Bentley Adams. He was employed for nineteen years with Dearbury Oil Company in Spartanburg and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Mr. Adams served in the S.C. National Guards for sixteen years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Gail Adams Williford and husband Hunter; three sons: Kenny Adams and wife Mandy; Johnny Adams and close friend Wendy Duncan and Joey Adams and wife Amanda; a sister, Linda Adams Tucker and husband Tommy; a brother, J.T. Adams and wife Delores all of Union; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Adams was predeceased by a daughter, Tina Marie Frost and a great-granddauther, Kyley Grace Smith.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday,, November 3, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ray Harold Belue. Burial will be in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Mobley, Shawn Haney, Aaron Heatherly, Bradley Heatherly, Rick Howard and Tommy Haney. The staff of Dearbury Oil Company are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
