Donnie Lee Baldwin

Mr. Donnie Lee Baldwin, age 38 of 138 Short Street, Monarch Community, Union, passed away Friday, October 28, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Union, SC July 7, 1973, a son of Ricky Baldwin of Buffalo and Linda Craig Baldwin of Union. He was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Baldwin is survived by a special girlfriend, Stacey Betenbaugh and her children, Ciarra, Skyler, Cory and Cile of Union; two sisters: Linda Brock and husband Brian of Union and Crystal Baldwin and Derek of Buffalo; a maternal grandfather, Robert M. Craig of Buffalo; a niece, Ashley Brock; a nephew, Brandon Brock both of Union and special cousins, Justin LeMaster and Allen Hudson and other special friends. Mr. Baldwin is predeceased by his biological father, Donnie Willard; his grandmother, Vermell Craig; grandparents, Roy Baldwin and Bobbie Jean Pitt.

Memorial services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the home of his sister, Linda Brock, 132 Short Street, Monarch Community, Union conducted by Rev. Rick Cook. The family is also at the home of his mother, Linda Craig Baldwin, 138 Short Street, Monarch Community, Union.

Visitation will be held the homes.

Carol Healey Yutz
Union, SC

Mrs. Carol Healey Yutz, age 75 of 306 Lakeview Heights, Union, widow of Edward J. Yutz, Jr, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Yutz was born in Bergen, New Jersey February 20, 1936, a daughter of the late Joseph Healey and Helen Wahl Healey. She was formerly employed as a Nurse’s Aide with Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Oakmont of Union.

Surviving are two daughters: Diane Dehart and husband Tim and Kerry Ann Yutz all of Union; two sons: Edward Yutz, III and wife Vikena of Dallas, GA and Joseph Yutz and wife Angela of Guyton, GA; five grandchildren: Melissa Gentry, Matthew DeHart, Blake Baldwin, Chase Baldwin all of Union and George Yutz of Dallas, GA; a great-grandchild, Levi Gentry of Union and a number of family members in New Jersey and Texas. Mrs. Yutz is predeceased by a sister and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Tuesday in the church prior to the service.

Jon Wendell Littlejohn
Union, SC

Mr. Jon Wendell Littlejohn, age 54, of 310 W. Hillcrest Avenue, Union, widower of Rhonda Pettit Littlejohn, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 29, 2011.

Mr. Littlejohn was born June 27, 1957, a son of Pat Allen Littlejohn of Union and the late Donald G. Littlejohn. He served in the SC National Guards - Union Unit for ten years where he earned several honors for marksmanship. Mr. Littlejohn enjoyed fishing and playing with his great nephews.

Surviving in addition to his mother, with whom he made his home, are two sisters: Donna Sweezy of Union and Beverly Smith and husband Smitty of Jonesville; two nephews: Jason Sweezy and wife Rebecca and Taylor Smith and two great-nephews, Cade and Jake Sweezy.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, October 30, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis and Rev. Toney Pettit. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Littlejohn, Joey Littlejohn, Lee Littlejohn, Tim Hopper, Heath Haney and Seth Caldwell. The following are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers: Zach Morris, Ricky Sweezy, Eddie Sweezy, George Robertson, Johathan Shields, Mark Austin, Matthew Sweezy, Johnny Hagan and Steve Ward.

Visitation will be held 3:00-4:00 PM in the chapel prior to the service.

Mrs. Nancy Gena Matthews Wix, age 77, widow of George Wix, formerly of Union passed away, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Woodruff Manor.

Mrs. Wix was born in Dandridge, TN, June 16, 1934 a daughter of the late Ernest Elmer Matthews and Mae Fields Matthews. She was a retired textile worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter: Brenda Wix; two sons: Billy Wix and Robbie Wix; a sister: Ruth Lee of Union; a brother: Richard Matthews and a number of grandchildren. Mrs. Wix was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Ann Wix Fowler.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Whitmire Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:30 Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Roger Dale Lovings, age 61, of 1010 W. Main Street, Union, widow of Dorothy McCullough Lovings, passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Lovings was born in Union, SC February 26, 1950, a son of the late William E. Lovings and Estelle Parham Lovings.

Surviving are a son, Richard Lovings and wife Laura of Union; a step-daughter, Myra Dameron of Jonesville; two step-sons: Greg Sanford of Jonesville and Boyd “Bubba” Sanford of Spartanburg; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Brenda L. Stone of Union, Gwinn Lovings of Henderson, KY and Ann Hall of Panna, IL; two brothers: William V. Lovings of Panama City, FL and David Ross Lovings of Lawton, OK and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Lovings is predeceased by two brothers, Bruce Lovings and Kenneth Lovings.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Edwin Lee Wilson, Sr.
Union, SC

Mr. Edwin Lee Wilson, Sr., age 93, husband of Lettie Mitchell Wilson of 4723 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy., Union, went home to be with Lord Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Wilson was born in Campobello, SC December 1, 1917, a son of the late Thomas Adam Wilson and Mamie Denton Wilson. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and earned a BS in Accounting from the University of NC, Charlotte, NC.. He retired as owner and operator of Wilson Sales Company in Lockhart and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. Mr. Wilson was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Lockhart Masonic Lodge # 244. He also was a member of the Senior Citizens of Lockhart; a member of the Union County Country Club where he was a two time Club Championship winner and a member of the Men’s Coffee Club of Lockhart.

Surviving in addition to his wife Lettie of sixty-six years are a daughter, Sharon Wilson Bickett and companion David Brown of Chester; two sons: Edwin L. Wilson, Jr and wife Pam of Mt. Tabor and John Barry Wilson, Sr and wife Elizabeth of Chester; four grandchildren: Missy Musser and husband Bill of Columbia, Mitchell Clay Wilson and wife Holly of Pauline, Amy Wilson Bishop and husband Chad of Easley and John Barry Wilson, Jr of Chester; four great-grandchildren: Lexi Wilson, Mitch Wilson both of Pauline, Marguerite Bishop of Easley and Claire Musser of Columbia. Mr. Wilson was predeceased by a grandson, John Brian Wilson; two sisters: Nellie Wilson Liner and Evelyn Wilson Fletcher and a brother, Joe Ray Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Lockhart Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merrit Wentz. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Tommy Denton, David Denton, Chad Bishop, John Barry Wilson, Clay Wilson, David Brown and Robert Carter. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort: Members of the Lockhart Methodist Men’s Sunday School Class, Bobby Harris, Pete Poulus, Gus Poulus, Mike Smith, Richard Denton and Pete Denton.

Melvin Theodore Stafford
Spartanburg, SC

Mr. Melvin Theodore Stafford, age 57 of 1298 Hammetts Grove Rd., Spartanburg, passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at his home

Mr. Stafford was born in Asheville, NC, April 4, 1954, a son of the late Forrest Jackson Stafford and Barbara Annette Stafford Weathers.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Whitting of the home; two sons: Chris Stafford and Jack Stafford; two sisters: Gail Cobb and Jamie Smith; two brothers: Gene Stafford and Larry Stafford all of Pacolet; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Stafford was predeceased by a grandson, Bradley Aaron Stafford.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the home of his sister, Janie Smith, 341 Sutton Rd., Pacolet.

Doris K. Morris
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Doris Knox Morris, age 89, widow of Virgil Morris of 111 Hillcrest Dr., Union, passed away, Monday, October 24, 2011 at her home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Morris was born in Union, January 1, 1922 a daughter of the late James S. Knox and Florence McKeown Webb Knox. Mrs. Morris was retired from Her Majesty of Union and was formerly employed with Milliken Co., Ottaray Plant. She was a lifelong member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she attended the Barbara Alexander Sunday School class. Mrs. Morris was a former member of the Lioness Club and enjoyed doing ceramics and other crafts. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: Jimmy Morris and wife Lori of Myrtle Beach; a son-in-law: John Middlebrook of Lexington; a sister-in-law: Lib Morris Smith and husband Al of Union; a granddaughter: Leslie Middlebrook Shealy of Lexington; three grandsons: David Middlebrook and wife Robin of Lexington, Andy Morris and Matt Morris both of Myrtle Beach; great-grandchildren: Jonas and Ragan Middlebrook of Lexington and Cheyenne Lawson of Buffalo; special nieces: Sylvia Morris of Clarksville, GA, Diane Hill of Union, Starr Bradford of Arden, NC, Clorice Mayo of Union and Brenda Alexander and husband Carroll of Union and several other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Morris was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Morris Middlebrook; four sisters: Myrtle Mayo, Iva Blakely, Willie Hart and Jeanette Queen; and a brother, Toby Webb.

The family would like thank all of Mrs. Morris special caregivers: staff and nurses of Medi Home Hospice, her primary caregiver and special companion, Lori Morris; nieces, Clorice Mayo and Brenda Alexander and husband Carroll all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Herb Garrett. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Carroll Alexander, Jr., Ricky Todd Harris, Joe Smith, Terry Wade, Mark Wade and Eddie Harris.

Members of the Barbara Alexander Sunday School class are asked to sit in a group.

Harold Dean Birch
Buffalo, S.C.

Mr. Harold Dean Birch, age 77, husband of Marion Olson Birch of 131 Dana Tara Lane, Buffalo, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Thursday October 20, 2011.

Mr. Birch was born in Union, May 30, 1934, a son of the late Carl and Lillian Willard Birch. Mr. Birch was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant after 51 years. He was a member of the Union Church of God where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Mr. Birch had also served in the S.C National Guard, was a musician and singer with the Bob Birch Singers and a member of the National Steel Guitar Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Louann McAbee and husband Donnie of Union; two sons: Darrell Birch of Buffalo and Ronald Birch and wife Teresa of McConnells; three sisters: Shelby Matthews and husband John L. Of Lexington, Cyndi Birch of Jacksonville, FL and Margaret Birchfield and husband Clyde of Union; two brothers: Bobby Birch and wife Honey and Donald Birch and wife Barbara all of Union; grandchildren: Wesley Birch, Todd birch Keitha Birch, Jason McAbee, Shannon Williams, Brandi Gutierrez, Samantha Birch, Brandon Sinclair and Nathan Sinclair; great-grandchildren: Brittany, Maddie, and Abby Williams, Mackenzie and Maci Grace Sinclair, Jackson and Joseph Gutierrez, Arron and Taylor Birch, Jayden Birch, Noah Birch and Joshua Mc Abee and his special pets, Angel, Sally and Eddie. Mr. Birch was predeceased by a daughter: Rhonda Birch, and a sister: Janell Birch.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown, Rev. Brandon Sinclair, Rev. Milton Hannah and Rev. Alton Stone. Entombment will be at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Mrs. Ella Mae Smith Wilson, age 72, of 118 Brooke Dr., Union, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Gaffney, April 25, 1939 a daughter of the late Jack and Mallie Inman Smith. She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters: Marcia Davis and husband Ronald of the home, Ann Bledsoe and husband Mike and Mary Stanford all of Union; a son: Rick Wilson and wife Darlene of Union; five sisters: Shirley Martin, Betty Jo Millwood, Joyce Stephens all of Gaffney, Sue Quinn of Jonesville and Cindy Hendrix of Woodruff; a granddaughter: Jessica Davis Mount and husband Chase of Columbia; a grandson: Chris Foster and wife Cindy of Greenville. Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by a sister, Judy Millwood and two brothers: Jerry Smith and Ricky Smith

Betty Heatherly Scales
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Betty Heatherly “Nan” Scales, age 75, wife of William T. Scales, Sr. of 126 Newport Dr., Union, went home to be with her Lord in the presence of her family on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

Mrs. Scales was born in Union, a daughter of Rubye Gist Howell and William H. “Bill” Howell of Jonesville and the late James Burton Heatherly. She was a graduate of Union High School and an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she was formerly a UMYF leader, a Sunday School teacher and was awarded Mother of the Year. She along with her husband were very influential in the organization and growth of Union Academy by their participation in the sports activities, fund raising and leadership rolls. Mrs. Scales had formerly been a Girl Scout Leader and remained an avid Gamecock Fan, even though her health had not permitted her to attend the games. She was a loving and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and a second mother and “Nan” to many.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a daughter: Carol S. Whitener and husband Allen; a son: William T. “Billy” Scales, Jr. and wife Michelle; two brothers: Floyd “Stump” Heatherly and wife Linda and Jim Heatherly and friend Marlene Proctor; two granddaughters: Kristin Caroline Whitener and Savannah Marie Scales; a special caregiver, Kim Jennings. Mrs. Scales was predeceased by a niece: Melinda Kaye Heatherly.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1622 Kelly Rd., Union, SC, 29379, conducted by Pastor Christopher Greene and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Scales, Stanley Gallman, Paul Hennessey, Robbie Littlejohn, Wayne Harmon, Benji Brown, Gerald “Junebug” Alman.

Mr. Alan Dean Taylor, age 50 of 506 Old Union Rd., Lockhart, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Taylor was born in Union, SC October 6, 1961, a son of Sue Bradley Taylor of the home and the late Paul Dean Taylor. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and had attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Taylor was formerly employed with Dollar General Distribution Center in Jonesville and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother David Taylor and wife Julie of Gaffney, a niece, April Taylor Mabry; a nephew, Cory Daniel Taylor and a great-niece Taylor Rae Mabry.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Lockhart Cemetery conducted by Rev. Cecil Johnson and Rev. Charles Terry.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mrs. Jo Carter Jeter Bailey, age 82, widow of James Ryan Jeter and Charles Edwin Bailey, formerly of Santuc-Carlisle Hwy., Union, SC died Friday, October 14, 2011 at the home of her daughter, Donna in Charleston, SC.

Mrs. Bailey was born in Union County, August 28, 1929, the daughter of the late Tommie Silas Carter and Mary Juanita Smith Carter. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and a member of Cane Creek Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Bailey was employed with Sears and Roebuck Catalog in Charleston, SC and Arthur State Bank.

Survivors are two daughters: Donna Jeter Gelwicks and husband, Thomas D Gelwicks, Jr. of James Island and Elizabeth Jeter Bean and husband William James Bean, III of Mt. Pleasant ; three grandchildren: Elizabeth Gelwicks Fallaw and husband, Jeremy B. Fallaw, Katherine Lauren Bean and William Ryan Bean and wife Caroline Gawrych Bean. She is survived two sisters-in-law: Patricia O. Carter of Jacksonville, FL; and June Jeter Smith and husband Wilbur F. Smith, Jr. of Santuc; and a brother-in-law: D.L. Brown of Spartanburg; several first cousins and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by a brother, Donald Hope Carter.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Jeter Family Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Robert Gant.

The family will receive friends Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R Holcombe Funeral Home.

Herbert Lee McClure
Pacolet, SC

Mr. Herbert Lee McClure, age 83, of 100 Stone Crest Court, Pacolet, SC Passed away Friday, October 14, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McClure was born in Lincoln, West Virginia, March 30, 1929, a son of the late Charles McClure and Nora McAlister McClure. He was a member of Winfield Baptist Church in Winfield, West Virginia. Mr. McClure was a Mason for more than fifty years and served as Past Master nine times at the Buffalo Lodge in Buffalo, West Virginia. He coached numerous candidates and a member of the Scottish Rite.

Surviving are three daughters: Lisa Sanders and husband Chris of Pacolet, Kim Gregory and husband Brian of Union, and Tammy McClure Young of West Virginia; three sons: Richard L. McClure and wife Carolyn of NC., Michael McClure and wife Christy of West Virginia and Ted McClure and wife, Treva of FL; a brother Clifford McClure of West Virginia; eighteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Mr. McClure was predeceased by eleven siblings.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 17, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale with Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the cemetery.

Mary Childers Lanier

Mrs. Mary Childers Lanier, age 57, wife of Gerald Lanier of 211 North 1st St., Lockhart, SC. passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Lanier was born in Union County, SC, September 7, 1954, a daughter of the late Vernon Lewis Childers and Helen McSwain Childers. She was a member of Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church and a graduate of Lockhart High School. Mrs. Lanier worked a Lockhart Mill for 24 years.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son Jackie Lanier of the home; a brother Daniel Childers of Union; and a nephew: Daniel Childers, Jr. of Union.

Mrs. Lanier was predeceased by 2 sisters: Melinda Childers and Martha Nichols.
Graveside Services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, October 17, 2011 at Lockhart Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Frank Cantrell.

Mr. James Andrew "Andy" Jones of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the age of 93.

Andy was born in Laurens County, SC on May 12, 1918, the son of the late Andy Young Jones and Fannie Bobo Jones. He grew up in Sedalia in Union County, SC and graduated from Cross Anchor High School.

Andy was a World War II Veteran who was a medic in the US Army. He served in the European Theater in three major campaigns: Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. He was awarded three bronze stars for his service to the nation. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Andy worked as a staff manager for the Life Insurance Company of Georgia until his retirement.

Andy is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Janie Margaret Jones of the home, his daughter Margaret Jones Heinlein and close friend Steve Ragan of Columbia, SC, and his daughter Rebecca Jones Cudd of Moore, SC. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Robert C. Cudd (Shey) of Waxahachie, TX, Rebecca C. Eller of Asheville, NC, and Charlotte Heinlein Mawson (Richard) of Southampton, England. He leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Stuart, Matthew, and Ian Mawson, Jade Eller, and Elliott and Natalie Cudd. Andy was predeceased by his siblings Ida Henerey, Frances Pitts, Ola Blakeley, Hugh Jones, and Claude Jones.

Andy will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The family wishes to thank Andy's care-givers at Eden Terrace of Spartanburg and United Hospice of Simpsonville for their loving care and kindness.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

In addition to her parents, Jordyn is survived by her grandparents: Glenn and Norma Davis, Steve Judy, Debra Leonard, Warren and Nancy Keisler all of Union; great-grandparents: Ollie Mae Brock of Putman, Paul Davis, Peggy Judy and Joan Cradhock all of Union; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Jordyan is predeceased by great-great-grandparents: William and Peral Bolin, Norman and Bessie Keisler, Roy Fisher and Sandra Davis.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Smith Eubanks, age 84, widow of James Thomas Eubanks, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Eubanks was born in Union County, SC March 8, 1927, a daughter of the late Beulah West Smith and Mack Smith. She retired from Milliken & Co - Monarch Plant and was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the Singles Again Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Eubanks is survived by a sister, Evelyn S. Ford of Union; a niece, Frances F. Bryson and husband Don of Union; several other nieces and nephews: Rosa Rogers (Ronald), Nancy Smith (Monroe), Dianne Lipsey and Mark Austin (Cathy); several great-nieces and great- nephews: Christopher Rogers, Ronnie Carter (Debbie), Beverly Carter, Wendy Lawson (David), Beth Jolly (Danny), Jonathan Bryson, and a special great-nephew, Ford Jolly. Mrs. Eubanks was predeceased by a sister, Juanita Thompson and three brothers, Boyd Smith, Marion Smith and George Smith.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 14, 2011 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bennie Ray Bobo, Sr., age 85 of 100 Jenkins Street, Union, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Spartanburg Hospital Restorative Care. Mr. Bobo was the widower of Ann Marie Lawson Bobo.

Mr. Bobo was born in Union, SC November 2, 1925, a son of the late Bennie Hix Bobo and Eva Pauline McCravey Bobo. He was a graduate of Union High
School and retired from Cone Mills- Carlisle Finishing Plant. Mr. Bobo was an outstanding basketball and baseball player in the textile league. He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Ann Bobo of Union; three sons: Bennie Ray Bobo, Jr. and wife Peggy of West Springs, Barry L. Bobo of the home and companion Stephanie West and her son Hunter West of Boiling Springs, SC and Brian H. Bobo of the home; two grandsons: Benjamin Ray Bobo of West Springs and Kody Davis of Greenville; two sisters: Ola Cabaniss of Union and Jenny Heuertz and husband Sam of Charlotte, NC and a brother, Donald "Sonny" Bobo and wife Patsy of Union. Ms. Pettigrew was born in Spartanburg, October 3, 1946, a daughter of the late John Ray and Minnie Lee Sprouse Osteen. She was a native of Pacolet and a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Greer.

Surviving are two daughters: Sandra Grizzle and Christy Henderson; two sons: Timmy Pettigrew and Allen Pettigrew; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister and six brothers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Morning Star Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.

Mr Johnathan Frank "Lum" Edwards, Sr., age 85, husband of Frances Orr Edwards of 354 Eison Rd., Union, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Edwards was born in Union, November of 1925 a son of the late Douglas and Lillie Adams Edwards. He retired from Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant and had formerly worked with United Merchants, Union and Buffalo Plants. Mr. Edwards was a graduate of Union High School and attended both Wofford and North Greenville Colleges. He was a US Army veteran of WWII having served with the 66th Panther Division in the European Theater.

An avid gardener, Mr. Edwards loved to share his produce and flowers with his many friends and was also known to voluntarily deliver newspapers to those at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Edwards was a member of the First Baptist Church and also attended Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Dr. Lillie "Ping" Edwards Bates and husband Raymond of Lexington; a son; Rev. John Edwards and fiancee, Dana Reynolds of Pauley's Island; a sister: Mannie Lee E. Mabry of Union; and three special grandchildren: Peter Bates, Daniel Bates and Betsy Kaye Edwards. Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a brother-in-law: Leon Mabry and a nephew: Bobby Mabry.

A memorial graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be at the cemetery immediately following the service.

Mr. William Wallace "Bill" Hodge, Jr., age 76, husband of Mary Tillery Hodge of 311 Glendale Rd, Union, passed away, October 5, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Hodge was born in Lumberton, NC, a son of the late William W. Hodge, Sr. and Willie Powell James and step-son of the late Doane Epps James, Sr. He retired from Milliken and Co., in Spartanburg, SC. His career spanned various manufacturing locations and included duties in the areas of manufacturing, planning and management information services. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Mr. Hodge had previously attended Wofford College prior to serving his country in the US Marines.

Mr. Hodge was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where he had served as Chairman on the Pastor-Parrish Relations Committee and had served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was a member of the David Clyburn and the New Beginnings Sunday school classes, a member of the Men's Club, and was very active in the Youth programs serving as a chaperone on choir tours. He also had served as Chairman of the Board for the Union Carnegie Library.

After retirement, Mr. Hodge enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader. He attended with great interest the monthly Alumni gatherings of the 1953 graduating class of Dreher High School in Columbia. A proud grandfather, he was uniquely involved with the activities of all his grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Leigh Hodge Sterrett of Raleigh, NC and Betsy Hodge Hall and husband Robin of Summerville; two sons: John Arrington Hodge and wife Laura of Spartanburg and William Wallace "Billy" Hodge, III of Union; two step-brothers: Marion James of Florence and the Rev. Jerry James and wife Tisha of Simpsonville; eight grandchildren: John Hampton Hodge, Benjamin Arrington Hodge, Virginia Claire Hodge, Cody Hodge Sterrett, Jordan Todd Sterrett, Sydney Reaves Sterrett, Rebekah Grace Hall and Logan Campbell Hall. He was predeceased by a step-brother; Doane Epps James, Jr.

Eugene "Gene" Palmer

Mr. Eugene "Gene" Palmer, age 63, husband of Sally Alexander Palmer of 102 Newport Drive, Union, died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Palmer was born in Union, SC December 1, 1947, a son of the late Francis Ralph Palmer and Doris Grace Howell Palmer. He was a 1966 graduate of Union High School and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mr. Palmer received his Masters Degree in Education Administration from Winthrop University. He served twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve.

Mr. Palmer was a retired educator with the Union County Schools and Spartanburg County School District #2. He served as Principal at Buffalo Elementary, Foster Park Elementary, Lockhart Elementary-Middle School and Boiling Springs Middle School. Mr. Palmer was devoted to Athletics, serving in many capacities including Head Basketball Coach at Union High School. He was currently an Assistant Football Coach at Union County High School, having coached on several Regional, Upper State, and State Championship football teams.

Mr Palmer was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was on the Board of Directors of Grace United Methodist Church Child Enrichment Program. He also served on the Church Council, Finance Committee; was treasurer and a teacher of the Upper Room Sunday School Class. Mr. Palmer was treasurer of the Secret Santa Program of Grace Church and involved in the Salkehatchie Summer Projects which serves Union County.

Mr. Palmer held membership and was actively affiliated with the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, the Gamecock Club, the Scotsman Club- Presbyterian College, UCHS Yellow Jacket Booster Club and the Union Elks Lodge # 1321.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Neely P. Swygert and husband Barrett of Lexington; a son, Thad Palmer of Clinton; two sisters, Freada P. Jackson of Union and Reada P. Joyce and husband Lon of Spartanburg; a brother, Michael Ralph Palmer of Union; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Caughman and Mr. Shell Dula. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Stephen Scott Lemons, age 34 of 2010 Browns' Creek Church Rd., Union, SC passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Lemons was born June 28, 1977, a son of Stephen Allen Lemons and Jennie Garner Lemons. He was a graduate of Conway High School and had attended USC of Spartanburg. He was formerly employed in management with Carrabba's Italian Grill. Mr. Lemons was a member of North Conway Baptist Church. Scott was a very passionate lover of life, music, people and animals.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a very special friend, Amanda Pettit of Union; maternal grandfather Walter M. Garner of Union; several aunts, uncles, cousins and his pitbull, JaCoby. Mr. Lemons was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Rev. Allen Lemons and Mae Vanderford Lemons and maternal grandmother, Katie L. Garner.

Mrs. Alma Ruth "Mama Ruth" McGowan age 92, passed away on September 21, 2011 at Golden Hill Health Care Facility.

Mrs. McGowan was born in Union, SC, a daughter of the late James Thomas and Thaddie Horne Morris. She moved to New York in 1960.

Ruth was the beloved wife of the late Clifton "Tip" McGowan; loving mother of two daughters Pat Escoe and husband John of Belton and Judy Aidala of Kingston, NY and son, the late Billy Morris who died in 2008. She is also survived by a sister: Lib Smith and husband Al of Union and was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence and Virgil Morris and a sister, Annie Mae Bradley. She has six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dale Lynch.

Mr. Gault was born in Union Co., March 13, 1939, a son of the late Harold Ray Gault and Louise Smith Gault. He was employed with United Merchants having worked in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. He was previously employed with S and J Wood and Adrian Metals both of Conway. Mr. Gault attended Union High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Cathy Medford; a brother: Bobby Gault and wife Elaine ; a granddaughter: Katie Medford and her fiancee Tyler Lee Lawson all of Union; a special sister-in-law reared in the home: Louise Frost of Joanna; a special “adopted” daughter: Mena Kershaw and her family of Union; a sister-in-law: Delores Neal and husband Tim of Buffalo; two brothers-in-law: Dennis Frost and wife Leesa of Union and Kenny Jennings and wife Lisa of Gaffney; special friends, Jerry and Betty Hardwick of Conway; numerous nieces and nephews; a great niece: Miss Emily Rae Canupp of Lockhart who brighten his final days with her big eyes and beautiful smile; and his special pets, Zoey and Sug. Miss Worthy was born in York, SC on December 20, 1951, a daughter of the late James and Mary Frances Trammell Rhinehart.

She is survived by three daughters; Diane Henry, of Moore, Michelle Whitehead, of the home, and Tobby Davis of Buffalo; four sons: Jamie Whitehead and Toney Whitehead both of Boiling Springs, Rickey Whitehead and Thomas Whitehead both of Roebuck; two brothers: Paul Rhinehart of Union and Floyd Rhinehart of Gaffney; sixteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Miss Worthy was pre-deceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Little was born in Union County, SC September 1, 1939, a son of Daisy Procter Little of Jonesville and the late William Little. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was member of Glory Baptist Church. Mr. Little was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Snapp (Richey) of Pacolet; a step-daughter, Jessica LeVister of Union; a son, Robert P. Mr. Rountree was born in Buffalo, SC January 2, 1917, a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Rountree and Rosa Riley Rountree. He was a graduate of Union High School and a 1939 graduate of Wofford College, where he played football. Mr. Rountree was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army. He later retired from the Army having earned the rank of Captain. Mr. Rountree was retired from the United States Postal Service and was an avid golfer. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted where he taught the David Clyburn Sunday School Class for twenty-three years.

Surviving are two sons: James R. Rountree, Jr of Charlotte, NC and John F. Rountree of Union; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a sister, Marguerite Rountree of Union. Mr. Rountree was predeceased by a daughter, Judith A. Rountree.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM at the graveside, Friday, October 7, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev David Caughman.

The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Clifford F. Proctor
Union, SC

Mr. Clifford F. Proctor, age 93, of Oakmont Residential, formerly of River Rd., Union, died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Regional Hospice Home. He was the widow of Catherine Vanderford Proctor.

Mr. Proctor was born in Cherokee County, SC October 2, 1917, a son of the late Roy Proctor and Viola Farr Proctor. He was a graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School and retired from Milliken Company-Lockhart Plant after forty-three years of service. Mr. Proctor was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Proctor took part in the beach landings of allied forces in North Africa, Sicily and the D Day Invasion of Normandy. He landed on Omaha Beach with the Red Zone invaiders.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen P. Stevens (Brad) of West Springs; two granddaughters: Leslie Register (Jeremy) of Moore and Carly Painter (Trent) of Pauline; three great-grandchildren: Riley and Reid Register and Ava Reese Painter; three sisters: Daisy Little, Wilhamenia Littlejohn (Bill) all of Jonesville, Katie Lee Williams (Bob) of Hilton Head, and Annie Belle Carpenter of Asheville, NC. Mr. Proctor was predeceased by two sisters: Vera Ruth Samples and Bertha Fowler and a brother, Arthur Miller Proctor.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Tommy Mann. Bural will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Roy Little, John Carpenter, Bobby Vaughan, Michael Vanderford, Ronnie Crocker, Bill All, Eddie Gibson and James D. Gregory.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45 PM Sunday in the church prior to the service.

The family is at the home of her granddaughter, Carly and Trent Painter, 160 Fincher Rd., Pauline, SC 29374.
