Eulis J. Gibson

Mr. Eulis J. Gibson, age 73, husband of Linda Gault Gibson of 309 Monarch Hwy, Union, SC passed away Friday, August 31, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Gibson was born in Union, SC January 13, 1939, a son of the late White Gibson and Hattie Davis Gibson. He had attended Cecil Business College and retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Mr. Gibson was a thirteen year Veteran of the US Air Force having served in the Vietnam War. He was a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife Linda are three sons: Robert Gibson and wife Amy of Union, Preston Gibson and wife Annette of Pauline and Howard “Wahoo” Gibson and wife Stacey of Union; two sisters: Bessie Vinson and husband Buck of Union and Margie Goodwin and husband Bill of Jonesville and four grandchildren: Tyler, Carmen , Abby and Preston Gibson. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by a sister, Doretha Gibson and two brothers, Howard Gibson and Preston E. Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon and Rev. Dr. Tim Driggers. Burial with Military Honors will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tyler Gibson, Mike Gault, Keith Gault, Cecil Brown, Bruce Whisnant, Scott Barnette, Leon Davis, Jr. and Ted Lovelace. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM Sunday to form the Honorary Escort: Tommy Knox, Reese O’Dell, Hugh Tucker, Randy George, Vel Dee Keisler, Jim Parks and Billy Scott.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Th family would like to thank Hospice Care of S.C. for their care and concern of Mr. Gibson during his illness.

Frances Austin Scott
Charlotte, N.C.

Frances Austin Scott,97, of Charlotte, passed away on August 30th. Born on January 3,1915 in Monticello,SC, she was the only child of John Austin Scott, Jr. and Mary Hardy Scott Holbrook.

Ms.Scott was a lifelong Methodist and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church since 1972. Ms. Scott was employed with Exxon for 34 years and retired from the company in 1971. She was a former member of The Charlotte Exxon Annuitants Club.

Ms. Scott is survived by her cousin, Cynthia Henderson McGhee and her loved ones, Joan Griffin, Richard Griffin, Jan Sweeney, Ronald Griffin, Joan Champ, Jamie Groover, Doug Daniels, Patty Gordon, David Daniels and Susan Daniels.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 1, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be at Kelly's Chapel Cemetery in Carlisle.

Pallbearers will include Richard Griffin, Doug Daniels, David Daniels, David Daniels, Jr., Joey Daniels and Staff Gordon.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday prior to the services at the funeral chapel.

Bobbie Jean Brown Smith-Stewart
Spartanburg, SC

Mrs. Bobbie Jean Brown Smith-Stewart, age 67, wife of Rufus Stewart of 395 Marshall Tucker Road, Pauline, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Mrs. Smith-Stewart was born in Union , September 5, 1944 a daughter of the late Ernest and Ava Webber Brown O’Shields. She was a graduate of Union High School and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Smith-Stewart was currently employed with Pediatric Services of America and was previously employed as a Registered Nurse at Wallace Thomson Hospital and with Spartanburg Oncology. An active member of Putman Baptist Church, Mrs. Smith-Stewart was a member of the Richard Moore Sunday school class and president of Senior Citizens group. She was also a member of the Union County Senior Citizens Association.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: one daughter: Deborah Southard and friend Mike Lanford; one brother: Gary Brown of Powdersville; three grandchildren: Caden Jackson of Buffalo, Gene Smith of Greenwood, and Kristen Smith of Union; one step-daughter, Wanda Stewart of Roebuck; one step-son, Randy Stewart and wife Stacie of Pauline; a special little friend, Allie Silvers whom Jean cared for deeply. Jean was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Smith; a son Mark Smith; and a son-in-law Mike Southard.

Funeral services will be held 3 PM Friday, August 31, 2012 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Rick Henderson burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Ivey, Jason Ivey, Brad Lawson, Ray Lawson, Ray Vinson, Bruce Lawson.

Margaret “Margie” Wilkins Vaughn
Union, SC

Margaret “Margie” Wilkins Vaughn, 91, of Union passed away Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. She was born in Cherokee County, South Carolina on August 17, 1921, a daughter of the late Thomas R. and Edna B. Wilkins.

Mrs. Vaughn is survived by her husband of fifty-four years Garland A. Vaughn of the home, and a son G. Thomas Vaughn of Myrtle Beach. Other survivors include a brother Francis B. Wilkins and family of Gaffney, as well as, a number of nieces and nephews and their families. Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by sisters Annie P. Vaughan, Violet Sims, Faye Jolly, and a brother George Wilkins.

A graduate of Jonesville High School, Mrs. Vaughn began her early career in Wilmington, North Carolina at the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company during World War II. She moved to Union County where she was employed by Milliken & Co. at the Excelsior Plant and later retired from the Union County Schools. Mrs. Vaughn was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and served in a number of other capacities. Upon retirement, Mrs. Vaughn volunteered with the American Red Cross.

A memorial service will be held 2PM, Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tommy McManus and Dr. G. Thomas Vaughn. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the church. A private graveside service will be held with the family.

Active pallbearers will be Ben M. Jolly, Lynn Wilkins, Rick Wilkins, Casey Wilkins, Darryl Gist, and Sam White.

William Carroll Burgess, Jr.
Union, SC

Mr. William Carroll “Luke” Burgess, Jr., age 52 of 315 Williford Rd., Union, SC passed away suddenly Monday, August 27, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Burgess was born in Union, SC August 23, 1960, a son of Elaine Williford Burgess and the late William Carroll Burgess, Sr. He received a degree in Welding from Spartanburg Technical College and was employed with Standard Textiles. Mr. Burgess was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman, farmer and loved horses.

Surviving in addition to his mother is his wife, Tammy Davis of the home; a daughter, Katie Elizabeth Johnson and husband Eric; a son, Billy Burgess and friend Nikki Turner; a sister, Melody Ann Carter and husband Perry Dean; a brother, Clarence Lee Burgess and wife Kathy all of Union; four grandchildren: Lit’l Luke Johnson, Trace Johnson, Haleigh “Bug” Burgess and Morgan Leigh Chesnut.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the families private cemetery beside his home, 315 Williford Rd., Union conducted by Rev. Guy Langston and Rev. David Lewis.

Active pallbearers will be Rickey Lyles, Ronnie Moore, Rickey Wilson, Jeff Brockman, George Hodge, Mike McClain, Donnie Robinson and Tim Patterson. The following are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbeares: Dennis Wix, Rickey Paul White and Brent Phillips.

Mr. Burgess will be taken to the Williford family home, 1608 Santuck-Carlisle Hwy, Union where the family will receive friends Tuesday.

Joan Henderson Guyton
Jonesville, SC

Mrs. Joan Henderson Guyton, age 60, of 414 C Street, Jonesville, widow of Danny Guyton, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at her mother’s home.

Mrs. Guyton was born in Union on July 16, 1952, a daughter of Peggy Lipsey Henderson of Jonesville and the late Dennis Charles Henderson. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and attended USC Union. Mrs. Guyton was previously employed with Sonoco Products and Label Corporation. She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and was first married to Mr. James Lee.

Surviving in addition to her mother are: a son; Kenneth Lee and wife Sandy of Union; three granddaughters; Kendra Lee, Amanda Lee, and Katherine Lee all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lawton Neely burial will follow at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Lipsey, Jimmy Sanders, Roger Lipsey, Jr., Jason Adams, and James Lee Sr.

Mr. Jesse Carroll Roller, age 71, husband of Sandra Lawson Roller, of 711 ½ Broom St. Ext., Whitmire, SC., died Saturday, August 25, 2012.

Mr. Roller was born in Scott, Virginia, June 7, 1941, a son of the late Emmett Roller and Randy Bledsoe Roller. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church since 1962 where he was an active Deacon, Sunday School teacher and was part of many capacities of the church. Mr. Roller was a veteran of the US Army and retired from Torrington Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 49 years are two sons: Johnny C. Roller and wife Penny of Whitmire and Michael E. Roller of Clinton; grandchildren: Jesse Logan and Brooklyn Rose Roller of Whitmire; a sister: Elsie Roller of Churchill TN., three brothers: Harold Roller of Blackwater, VA., Gene Roller of Mechanicsville, VA., and Donald Roller of Churchhill VA. Mr. Roller was predeceased by 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Friendship Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. J.E. Maulk, Rev Toney Pettit and Rev. Horace Weathers. Burial will follow at Whitmire Cemetery with Military Honors.

Mr. Dean Gossett, age 80, husband of Betty Gossett, of Pacolet, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at his home after complications from pneumonia.

Mr. Gossett was born in Spartanburg, July 15, 1932 and was a retired textile worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: Gene “Stroke” Gossett: two daughters: Wanda Harris and Carol Wells both of Pacolet; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchilden.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 Pm Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Pacolet Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jimmy Powell.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mrs. Ginger Loree Sinclair Henderson, age 62, wife of Eugene Wayne Henderson of 123 Seigler Rd., Union, SC. passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Henderson was born in Union, SC., October 12, 1949, a daughter of the late Murl Sinclair and Mary Trammell Sinclair. Mrs. Henderson was a graduate of Union High School and formerly worked at Oakmont Nursing Home where she was a devoted a beautician. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 44 years are a son: Chad Henderson and wife Amy of Spartanburg and a daughter: Selenna H. Hyatt and husband Billy of Buffalo; two grandchildren: Sierra Roark and Reagan Henderson; a sister: Nadie Gault and husband Keith; brothers: Floyd Sinclair and wife Joyce, Larry Sinclair and wife Elaine and Olin Sinclair all of Union; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale.

Mr. Danny Thomas “Plug” Prather, age 61, husband of Sheila Allen Prather of 1478 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, passed away Friday, August 25, 2012.

Mr. Prather was born in Union, October 14, 1950, a son of Wilhelmina Howell “Willie” Kirby of Union and the late Stead Emerson Prather. He was a retired roofer and loved working on cars. Mr. Prather was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son: Patrick Shane Thompson of the home and a daughter: Brittany Thompson of Gaffney; other sons and daughters: Sandy Gilikison of Union, Adrien Fawn Taylor of Winston Salem; Daniel Emerson Prather and Michael Shane Prather both of Charlotte; two sisters: Sara Manis and Shirley Pauline Heinz and husband Steven all of Union; a brother: Michael Kirby of Polk Co., NC; two grandchildren: Katelyn Thompson and Emily Marie Leann Bryant both reared in the home and three other grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a special nephew: Fletcher Roberts of Alma, MI; special friends: Vickie Briggs and Reuben Greene both of Union. Mr. Prather was predeceased by a brother: Ernest Kent “Kenny” Kirby.

Mr. Jesse Blair Marshall, Jr., age 75, of 142 Antioch Drive, Buffalo, widower of “Pete” Fox Fowler Marshall, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Mr. Marshall was born in Gaston Co., NC on August 21, 1937 a son of the late Jesse B. Marshall and Virginia Stowe Marshall. He was retired from the United States Army where he served two tours in the Vietnam War and was awarded two the Purple Hearts.

Surviving are four daughters: Terri West and husband Don, Shana Wheatley and husband Randy, all of Buffalo, Faye Fowler and husband Bruce Benjamin of Myrtle Beach, Melody Davis and husband Bruce of Forest City, NC; five sons: Gerald Fowler and wife Mary, Dennis Fowler and wife Angie, all of Union, Bobby Fowler and wife Billie of Annville, PA, Joe Fowler of Spartanburg, and James Fowler of Washington State; one son-in-law Roger Hostetler; 18 grandchildren, Cristen Wheatley, Branda Davis, Ingrid Malone and husband, Robbie, April Gregory, Hollis Fowler, Erica Fowler, Morgan Fowler, Leesa Fowler, Windy Kinsman, Karmen Kinsman, Laura King, Billy West and wife Charlene, Jamie Gregory, Aaron West, Doyle Wheatley, Bruce Kinsman, Logan Fowler and Dale Marlow; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mr. Marshall was predeceased by a daughter, Mikki Hostetler.

Beth Summer-Strait
Jonesville, S.C.

Mrs. Beth Summer-Strait, age 49, wife of Robert Strait of 1234 West Springs Hwy., Jonesville, passed away August 22, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Beth was born in Buffalo, April 21, 1963, a daughter of the late Ollie Orestus Summer and Bertha Brock Summer. Mrs. Summer valedictorian of her graduating class at Union Academy where she was also named a Furman Scholar. She received her undergraduate degree from the USC-Union and Lander University and received a master degree in Community and Occupational Education from USC-Upstate.

Beth was employed as a court liaison the Domestic Abuse Center for the Upstate area of South Carolina. She was previously had served as Executive Director of the Pace Center and had also served as Director of the Spartanburg Mental Health Association. Beth had also worked with the Union County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and the Union Carnegie Library. She was currently serving on the Upstate Workforce Investment Board and had also served on the Union County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board. Beth loved being a advocate for mental health and for other concerns in her community. She had participated in the development of legislature to support mental health services and was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by former Gov. Mark Sanford.

An avid traveler with her husband, Beth was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, “Mama” and aunt. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son: Daniel Orestus Strait of the home; three sisters: Margie and Gearline Summer and Brooks Varner; one brother: Frank Summer; a special niece: Shannon “Molly Roe” Smith; other nieces and nephews: Dianne Anthony, Dale Summer, Christy Casey, Dee Anthony, Billy Anthony, Jonathan Culp, Caitlyn Culp, Dillon Smith, Faith “Peaches” Smith, Kalyn Casey, Jacob Casey, D.J. Anthony, Emily Anthony, Storm Anthony, Dakota Anthony, Corey Johnson and Zachary Young. Beth was predeceased by a sister: Roberta Summer and two brothers: Charles and Forrest Earl Summer.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 26, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the chapel.

Lillie Mae Crocker

Mrs. Lillie Mae Boulware Crocker, age 80, wife of Henry Earl Crocker, of 828 Meansville Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Crocker was born in Union, January 3, 1932, a daughter of the late Floyd and Corrie Smith Boulware. She was retired from Milliken and Co., Monarch Mill, and was a faithful member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter: Marilyn C. Inman of the home; two sons: James Douglas Crocker and wife Lynn of Buffalo and Paul Leslie Crocker and wife Joan of Jonesville; a sister: Barbara Osborne and husband Richard of Buffalo; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Crocker was predeceased by a granddaughter, Michelle Crocker and a son-in-law, James H.F. Inman.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Lisa Gaye Barber Manibusan, age 52, wife of Tommy C. Manibusan of 166 Camelot Dr. Union, passed away at the home of her parents, 2247 Jonesville Hwy., Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

Mrs. Manibusan was born in Union, March 31, 1960 a daughter of Charles Larry “Butch” Barber and Bobbie Trantham Barber. She was a 1978 graduate of Union High School and was employed as a dental assistant with the office of Dr. Talmadge D. Wilkins, III.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two sons: Drew Thomas Manibusan and Zachary Paul Manibusan both of the home; two brothers: Charles O. “Chuck” Barber and Paul D. Barber both of Union; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and families. She was predeceased by a very special aunt, Rebecca “Becky” DeBruhl.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 24, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Claude James “Jabo” Steen
Lockhart, SC

Mr. Claude James “Jabo” Steen, age 85, husband of Betty Ashe Steen of 314 South Sixth Street, Lockhart, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Steen was born December 29, 1926 a son of the late Ben and Clara Meggs Steen. He was retired from Lockhart Power and was a member of Lockhart Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. Mr. Steen was Veteran of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy and was also a member of the Shriners and the Masonic Lodge of Lockhart.

Surviving in addition to his wife are; two daughters: Esther Starnes and husband Butch of Whitmire and Angie Patrick and husband Roy of York; two sons: Freeman Reardon and wife Betty of Whitmire and Lee Steen and wife Allie of York; a sister: Betty Johnson of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren: Jason Reardon and wife Mary of Spartanburg, Eric Reardon and wife Tammy of Gray Court, Mike Senn and wife Jessica of Union, Jonathan Patrick and wife Michelle of McConnells, Michelle Knight and husband Jason of Silverstreet, T.J Starnes of Whitmire and Lee-Bo Steen of York; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by 5 brothers, 1 sister, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday, August 24, 2012 at Lockhart Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons and Rev. Kenny Weaver burial will follow at Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Mr. Steen’s grandsons and a special friend Troy Vaughan. The adult Sunday School Class of Lockhart Presbyterian Church is asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held 6 PM until 8 PM Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Caillin is also survived by her sister, Lexi; brothers: Zack, Gavyn and Mason; maternal grandmother: Rhonda A. Keisler and husband Chris; maternal grandfather: Donald Kingsmore; paternal grandparents: Wendy and Paul Gregory all of Union.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Fairforest Baptist Church cemetery conducted by Rev. Alan Gregory. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 4:00 PM in the church prior to the services.

Mrs. Nettie Mae Jolley Creech, age 92, widow of Earl M. Creech of 611 Stagecoach Rd., Pauline, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 19, 2012.

Mrs. Creech was born in Spartanburg Co., November 21, 1919, a daughter of the late Virgil V. Jolley and Alma Martin Jolley. She was a graduate of Chesnee High School and retired from Michelin Tire. Mrs. Creech was a faithful member of West Springs Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter: Sylvia Knox of the home; two grandchildren: Shannon Splawn and wife Sharon and Sherri Rich and husband Patrick; nine great-grandchildren: Jessica and husband James Shannon, Jimmy, Joshua, Jordan and Jada Splawn, Stephanie Stafford, Emily and Caleb Rollins and Stella Rose Rich; and one great-great-grandchild: Casey Shannon. Mrs. Creech was predeceased by a daughter: Merinda Henderson, a granddaughter: Danyelle Stafford and a great-granddaughter: Angel Danyelle Stafford.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Henry Johnson and Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be: Jimmy Splawn, Joshua Splawn, Robby Woody, Joe Forrest, Mike Gault and Paul Woody.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church Wednesday prior to the services.

Mr. Timothy L. Howell, age 54, of Pacolet, SC., died Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Howell was born in Cherokee County SC., December 16, 1957, a son of Doris Harris Howell and the late Tom Howell. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Howell was a member of Pacolet First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a long time companion: Ann Blanton of Spartanburg; a daughter: Jennifer Wells and husband Jonathan of Spartanburg; three sons: Justin Howell, Jordan Howell both of Spartanburg and Jeremy Howell and wife Kim of Ohio; two step-sons: Jason Blanton and Seth Blanton both of Spartanburg; a sister Michelle Hembree of Enoree; two brothers: Dugar Howell and wife Amy of Chesnee and Britt Howell of Pacolet; seven granddaughters: Kaitlin, Hailey, McKenzie, Taylor, Adina, Alina and Maranda and two step-granddaughters: Makalya and Michelle. Mr. Howell was predeceased by a daughter: Jessica Howell.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Pacolet First Baptist Church cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dennis Tessnier.

Mr. Carl Eugene Varner, age 76 of 379 Pinehaven Street, Laurens, SC., died Wednesday, August 8, 2012.

Mr. Varner was born in Union, SC., June 11, 1936, a son of the late Owen Farr Varner and Dorothy Quinn Varner. He was a graduate of Union High School and served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are a sister: Shirley Whitmire and husband Henry of Bethel, Connecticut; a nephew: Charlie Gill of Union; a niece: Pam Hawkins Tinsely of Spartanburg.

Mr. Varner was predeceased by a sister Mary Ann Gill.

William Jefferson Scales, Sr.

Mr. William Jefferson Scales, Sr., age 86, husband of Mary Stepp Scales of 1132 Meansville Rd., Union, SC passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Scales was born in Kelton, SC September 21, 1925, a son of the late Clyde Scales and Josie Elizabeth Faucett Scales. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Smith Lumber Company after forty plus years of service. Mr. Scales was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the DDE Destroyer- US Mansfield. Mr. Scales was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was an avid farmer.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary Stepp Scales of sixty-one and one-half years are a daughter, Linda Scales Pardue and husband Gene; a son, Jeff Scales and wife Eva; a sister, Mary Scales Murphy and husband Maxie all of Union; two grandchildren: Lee Jefferson Scales and Terry Lane Scales and a great-grandson, Caden Lane Scales.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Harris was born in Union, SC November 14, 1964, a son of Donald Fred Harris, Sr. of Union and Judy Stephenson Harris of Buffalo. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are a daughter, Kendell Lawson of Buffalo; a step-mother, Marie Harris of Union; two sisters: Anna LaDuck (Albert) of Woodruff and Shanna Sanders (Jamie Chambers) of Union; a brother, Freddie Harris of Buffalo; a step-brother, Brandon Harris of Union; paternal grandmother, Anna Harris of Union; special nephews, Devon Puckett and Dale “DJ” Puckett, Jr, both of Buffalo, a niece and five other nephews; a step-grandson, Trey Fowler of Union and a special friend, Donna Harrison of Buffalo. Mr. Harris was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Fred Harris and maternal grandparents, Arley and Pauline Stephenson.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Michael Wingertsahn.

Mr. Delmar “Leroy” Kinney, age 76, husband of Martha Kerstetter Chamberlin, of 207 Gibert Street, Union, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Kinney was born September 11, 1935 in Montgomery, PA, a son of the late Lloyd and Florence Bennet Kinney. He was employed with Conso for 49 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Julie Marie Eckard, Kerin Joe Lukens, and Susan Beth Risenger all of Duncanon, PA; eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Mr. Roy Everett Latty, age 70, of 210 Fowler Street, Roebuck, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Latty was the husband of Wilma Lee Latty.

Mr. Latty was born in Madison, NC March 3, 1942, a son of the late Hoyt Allen Latty and Lucille Ledford Latty. He was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are two sons: Michael Latty and Wayne Latty; a sister, Edna Moore and husband Jack of Union; a half-brother, Dewey Butler of Rutherford, NC and a host of other family members.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook.

Visitation will be held in the church immediately following the service.

Harold Robert Brown
Union, SC

Mr. Harold Robert Brown, age 77, husband of Evelyn Modora Varner Brown of 293 Varner Rd., Union, SC went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 while a patient at Ellen Sager Nursing Home.

Mr. Brown was born in Charleston, SC June 12, 1935, a son of the late Paul David Brown and the late Hilda Byrd LeGrand. He was retired from the United States Air Force with twenty-two years of service. Following his military career, he had worked for Milliken & Co, Wallace Thomson Hospital and Carlisle Finishing Company. He later retired from the Union County School System, PERC Center. “Papa Brown” as he was affectionately known by his family, friends and community, was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he served many years as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and was church Treasurer for over twenty years. “Papa Brown’s” family was the pride of his life.

Surviving in addition to his wife of fifty-six years, Evelyn Modora Varner Brown, are two daughters: Robin B. Bennett and husband Mike of Union and Christal B. Gossett and husband Ronnie of Jonesville; a son, Rev. Robert Tony Brown and wife Carol of Whitesburg, KY; six grandchildren: Chris Bennett and wife Danielle, Tina Gossett Owenby and husband David, Robert Brown, Emily Bennett, Bethany Brown and Jordan Bennett; and one great-grandchild, Papa Brown’s popsicle buddy, Mason Bennett, who is expecting to welcome the birth of a sister, Loralie Bennett in the next few weeks; two sisters: Patsy Fuggett of Lexington and Judy Rowland of Columbia; a brother, Bill Kirshner of Sunset, UT and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Service Celebrating the Life of Papa Brown, will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. David Lewis and the Rev. Neil Keisler. Burial will follown in the church cemetery with full Military Honors.

Members of the James Patterson Sunday School Class, Deacons of Fairview Baptist Church and Billy Medford are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM Saturday to form the Honorary Escort.

The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service at Fairview Baptist Church.
