Michael “Woo” Adams

Mr. Michael Lynn “Woo” Adams, age 55, husband of Julia “Beth” Queen Adams, of 670 Pea Ridge Hwy, Jonesville, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Adams was born in Union, SC December 9, 1957, a son of the late James Earl Adams and Elsie Scoog Adams. He had attended Jonesville High School. A Businessman, he was Co-Owner of Adams Brothers Logging Corporation. Mr. Adams was a member of Morningstar Baptist Church in Pacolet and was an avid coon hunter.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Chanda Falcone and husband Anthony and Christina Lynn Adams and special friend Chad Burgess all of Jonesville: two grandchildren: Mellana Falcone and Toney “Bubba” Falcone; three sisters: Jenny Adams, Lois Garner and husband Ned and Deborah Adams; two brothers: Richard Adams and wife Shirley all of Jonesville and Talmadge Adams and wife Debra of Union and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Adams was predeceased by a sister Linda Kinsey and a brother Oscar Adams.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Morningstar Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be in the Porter Cemetery.

Mr. Adam’s nephews and Employees of Adams Brothers Logging Corporation will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Wednesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Millie D. Epps
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Millie Douglass Epps, age 74, wife of Haynesworth Van Epps, III, of 108 Cherokee Ave., Union, passed away December 30, 2012 at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Epps was born March 25, 1938, a daughter of the late Floyd Samuel (Jack) Douglass and Mary Vann Kendall Douglass of Chesterfield. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and a 1960 graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, NC, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. Mrs. Epps taught school in Winston-Salem, NC and also in Union.

Mrs. Epps was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church and was actively involved in services through her church circle. She was a sustaining member of the Junior Charity League. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her many friends who also loved her. She never tired of doing for others, and her home was a center of hospitality for all who came to visit.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 50 years is a son: Haynesworth Van Epps, IV and his wife Choon Lee Ang of Spartanburg; a daughter: Kendall Epps Alexander and her husband Edward Click Alexander of Lexington; a granddaughter: Catherine Marks Alexander of Lexington; two sisters: Ann Douglass Gibson Nichols of Union and Cornelia Douglass Bittle of Camden; one brother: Floyd Samuel (Jack) Douglass, Jr. of Chesterfield; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives in a very close family.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 5, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. David Bauknight.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union, SC 29379.

Jonathan W. Eubanks
Union S.C.

Mr. Jonathan Wayne Eubanks, age 50 of 227 Munro St., Union, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, December 27, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Eubanks was born in Union, October 19, 1962, a son of the late Wayne Ronald Eubanks and Betty Jean Roberts Eubanks. He was a graduate of Union High School and employed with Jon Dillon’s Café.

Surviving are two sisters: Theresia E. Howell and husband Donald and Patricia E. Nave and friend Richard Gowan all of Union; a niece: Fran Bailey; five nephews: Talmadge Howell, Benny, Michael and Christopher Nave, and Ronald Eubanks, Jr.; a great-nephew: Hunter Bailey; and two very special nieces: Brianna and Chloe Bailey. Mr. Eubanks was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Terry Eubanks and a niece, April Eubanks Branch.

A memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The family will be be at the home of his sister, Theresia and Donald Howell, 117 Scenic, Dr., Union.

I.G. Vanderford
Union, S.C.

Union County lost a member of the community who dedicated his entire life to serving others – family, friends, community and strangers. Iverson George “I.G.” Vanderford passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 26 at Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care.

Vanderford was survived by his wife, Beth Smith Vanderford; son, Freddie Vanderford; grandson Derik Vanderford; step-son: Charlie H. Smith of Maryland; a step-granddaughter: Amanda Nadeau of Virginia; a special friend, Gwen Price of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews. Vanderford was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Inman Vanderford; daughter, Janet Vanderford Sanders; brothers Albert Vanderford and Marvin Vanderford; and sisters Pearl Crocker, Julia Wiliams and Mae Lemons.

Mr. Vanderford was born on May 13, 1928 in Lockhart, South Carolina, the son of John Posey and Georgia Sealy Vanderford. He was a 1945 graduate of Lockhart High School and grew up in Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. He sang in a quartet with his brother Marvin and Herman and Roy Taylor. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served two tours of duty in Korea, one in Europe, one in Japan, and one in Vietnam.

Mr. Vanderford served 26 years of active duty in the U.S. Army receiving among his distinguished military honors the Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation Award. He retired with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal four times and the Good Conduct Medal seven times. Following his military career, Vanderford was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Ga. as a disabled veterans outreach representative. After moving back to Union County, Vanderford served as Veterans Affairs Service Officer for six years.

In 1994, Mr. Vanderford was recognized by the South Carolina State Senate in recognition of dedicated and outstanding service as Union County Veterans Affairs Service Officer, as well as his loyal military service during 1950-1976. The senate also thanked him for significant contributions to Union County, the State of South Carolina and the U.S. Mr. Vanderford was known throughout the community for his willingness to serve others. He was a former member of Union County Council. He also served as Commander of the Buffalo Post 87 of the American Legion for more than 20 years and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Vanderford was a 64-year member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner. He was a past commander of the Legion of Honor and was a former member of both the Union County Council on Aging and Salvation Army boards of directors. He started a medication program for veterans in Union County by driving to Ft. Jackson to pick up medications for veterans who were unable to travel, and he would then hand deliver them. At the time of his death, Mr. Vanderford served as a member of the Union Hospital District Board of Directors, the Veterans Day Parade committee and as an adviser for the Catawba Area Council on Aging. On Nov. 10, 2010, the building in Buffalo formerly known as the Drug Store Building and later the Buffalo Senior Citizen Building was renamed and dedicated as the I.G. Vanderford Building in honor of Vanderford’s tireless efforts for the citizens of Buffalo and veterans of Union County.

Mr. Vanderford still managed to find time to host parties for family and friends, at which he enjoyed cooking barbecue and various gourmet desserts. He also enjoyed catering events, making his signature dishes and edible arrangements. While playing host to family, friends and members of the community, he enjoyed giving tours of the massive miniature village he created with Dept. 56 pieces as well as landscape scenery he built to compliment them. He also created stories to tell as he showed each scene in the village.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton, Rev. Jerry McKee and Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Phillip Lemons, Robert Crocker, Stanley Vanderford, Keith Vanderford, Buddy Vanderford, Forrest Vanderford, Craig Price and Wilbur Smith. Honorary escort will be Earl Black, Ronnie Yount, Jimmy Kingsmore, Allen Cabiness, Steve Greer, Bobby Hall, Joe Plemons, Dan Burnett, Henry Maness, Jim Maness, Jimmy Johnson, Sam Elliot, and members of the American Legion, Buffalo Post 87.

James “Bucky” Ward, Jr.

Mr. James Edwin “Bucky” Ward, Jr, age 64, husband of Jennifer Holley Abee of 126 Ashley Katie Dr., Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Ward was born in Union, August 5, 1948, a son of the late James E. Ward, Sr and Clara Bobo Ward. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Surry Community College and Gilford Technical in North Carolina. Mr. Ward was retired as Supervisor from Union County 911 and had previously served as an instructor for 911 Communications for North Carolina community colleges. He was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mr. Ward was also a member of Union Masonic Lodge #75, Union York Rites Bodies, Scottish Temple of Columbia, Hejaz Shrine Temple in Greenville and the Woodruff Shrine Club. Bucky always tried to give back to his community by serving in Law Enforcement, Fire and Rescue and with EMS for over 25 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a step-daughter, Jesse Abee; two step-sons, CJ Abee and Trey Newton and wife Amanda all of Union; two grandchildren: Delaney Newton and Colton Abee; special cousin, Cheri Harris and special friends Marshall and Gail Adams.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch. Burial will be at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jesse Juanita Thompson Prokity, age 93, of Life Care Center, Columbia died Sunday, December 23, 2012.

Mrs. Prokity was born in Union County, SC a daughter of the late Jesse and Nannie Burgess Thompson. She was a graduate of Union High School and attended Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC. Mrs. Prokity was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia and also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mrs. Prokity was predeceased by three sisters: Rubye Surrett, Wilcie Mae Farr and Dora T. Reames.

Crypt side services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

E. Wayne Osborne

Mr. E. Wayne Osborne, age 63, husband of George Anne Beard Osborne, of 103 Catawba Street, Union, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012.

Mr. Osborne was born in Chester, April 28, 1949, a son of the late Elijah R. Osborne, Sr. and Marilyn Melton Osborne and William Harry “Buddy” Fairfax and Zelma Bagwell Fairfax. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Rock Hill Printing and Finishing. Mr. Osborne member of Morningside Baptist Church where he was a member of the J.D. Gaines Sunday School Class. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 75, York Rite Bodies and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. Mr Osborne was a loving husband, Daddy, Papa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Michelle O. Cody and husband Blake of Union; two granddaughters, Ashton and Leah Cody both of Union; two nephews whom he thought of as sons, Michael Smith and Travis Mullis; a special niece, Teresa Smith; a special sister-in-law, Linda Beard Smith; five sisters, Janet (Mickey) Fincher of Rock Hill, Diane (Jerry) Thomas of Edgemoor, Tina (Jerry) Rollins of Chester, Susan (James) Cato of Beaufort, Sherry (Harry) Malpass of Hartsville; four brothers Johnny Osborne of Edgemoor, Terry (Vickie) Fairfax of Chester, Jeff (Kathy) Fairfax of McConnells, Keith (Pam) Fairfax of Hickory Grove. Mr. Osborne was predeceased by a brother, Roy Osborne, Jr. and a sister, Lori Fairfax Tinsley.

Mrs. Pearlene Erwin Fowler, age 76, wife of James Elliot Fowler, of 150 Park Drive, Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Fowler was born March 18, 1936 in Cherokee, SC, a daughter of the late Claude and Mattie Thompson Erwin. She was formerly employed with Her Majesty Industries. Mrs. Fowler was a member Gilead Baptist Church and helped with the Youth Group.

Surviving in addition to her husband are, two daughters Elaine M. Patrick and husband Randy L. Patrick, Sr. of Union and Tammy Greer of Buffalo; three sons, William E McAbee, Sr. and wife Sandi of McClellanville, Joe McAbee of Chesnee, and Chuck Fowler and wife Kim of Boiling Springs; one sister, Sara Heatherly and husband Ronnie of Buffalo; two brothers, Dever Erwin and wife Doris of Buffalo and Leonard Erwin and wife Frances of Union;13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fowler was predeceased by 2 brothers, Walter and Jack Erwin and 1 sister, Agnes Osment.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, December 28, 2012 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lawton Neely.

Henry Dunlap Johnson
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Henry Dunlap Johnson, age 87, husband of Patsy Kingsmore Johnson of 1679 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville passed away Monday, December 24, 2012 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg, SC.

Mr. Johnson was born in Union, SC February 20, 1925 a son of the late Frank Arthur Johnson and Dora Lee Dunlap Johnson. He retired from United Merchants-Union Mill and was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II. Mr. Johnson was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where he served as the teacher of the Men’s Bible Class for over twenty years, Trustee and Usher. He was a member of the Music Makers Quartet and Minister to shut-ins at nursing homes and senior citizens. He was also a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75, VFW and Woodmen of the World. Mr. Johnson was first married to the late Margaret Wilburn Johnson. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife Patsy are a daughter, Sandra Hawkins Page and husband Max of Woodruff; two sons: Johnny Mack Johnson and wife Judy of Buffalo and Steve Kent Johnson of Union; seven grandchildren: Angie Hines, Scott Johnson, Jennifer Hicks, Jamie Johnson, Nick Page, Brad Page and Adam Page and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Mr. Johnson’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. Mrs. Rita Jones Moore, age 79, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 25, 2012. She was formerly owner and operator of Rita Moore Upholstery and was the widow of Donald Moore, Sr.

Mrs. Moore was born in Spartanburg, May 11, 1933, a daughter of the late Jesse B. Jones and Jenetta Rhymer Jones. She had two sons who were both preachers, the late Jesse E. Moore and Donald Moore, Jr. who is pastor of The Potters House Church which she attended.

Graveside services conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg. Visitation will be held immediately following the services at the graveside.

The family will be at the home of her grandson, Noel Moore, 598 Bennett Dairy Rd., Spartanburg.

Dr. Paul Kent Switzer, Jr.
Union, SC

Dr. Paul Kent Switzer, Jr., a beloved family physician from Union, South Carolina died on December 22, 2012 at the age of 95. Family, friends, colleagues and patients will miss his compassionate spirit and quick-witted humor.

Born on July 26, 1917, Dr. Switzer was the son of the late Mollie Layton Switzer and Dr. Paul Kent Switzer, Sr. of Union. He graduated from Union High School in 1934 and Clemson College in 1938 where he received the College English Medal. He studied medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, graduating with honors in 1941.

After completing an internship at Gallenger Hospital in Washington, DC, Dr. Switzer applied for a commission in the United States Army. During WWII, he served with the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion as Battalion Surgeon in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium and Germany. He received the Silver Star for his courageous actions during the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He also received the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds.

After being discharged honorably from the Army as a Major, Dr. Switzer returned to the Medical University of South Carolina for post-graduate work as a resident in internal medicine. Upon completion of his residency, he successfully passed his post-graduate board examinations and was certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Following his residency, Dr. Switzer worked as an instructor at MUSC, where he taught and did extensive original research on sickle cell anemia, rheumatic fever and alcohol abuse, publishing several papers on these subjects. Due to his clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Switzer received the distinction of becoming a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Although Dr. Switzer was well suited for the field of academic medicine, he felt duty bound to return to Union, South Carolina to join his father's medical practice. For almost 60 years, Dr. Switzer tirelessly served the residents of Union County as a primary care physician until his retirement at the age of 90.

During his career, Dr. Switzer resided as Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Board at Wallace Thomson Hospital. A follower of the Christian faith, he was a life long member of Grace United Methodist Church. In the community, he was an active member of the Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Carolina Yacht Club in Charleston and the Piedmont Club in Spartanburg. Over the years, he was a recipient of numerous awards including the Order of the Palmetto in 2011 and the Union County Centennial Cornerstone Award in 2012.

Aside from medicine, Dr. Switzer along with his brother, the late James Layton Switzer, was an owner of Cross Arrows Farm, a working dairy farm in Enoree, SC. In this capacity, he promoted the Golden Guernsey breed, producing several champions on the state, regional and national levels. For his contribution to the Guernsey Breed, the South Carolina Guernsey Cattle Club named him Honoree of the Year in 1977.

Dr. Switzer is survived by his wife, Toccoa Wise Switzer of Union and children, Paul Kent Switzer, III (Augusta) of Columbia SC; James Layton Switzer (Elizabeth) of Spartanburg, SC and Toccoa Bailey Switzer of Charlotte, NC and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 26th at Grace United Methodist Church in Union, South Carolina. A reception in the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the committal service.

Active Pallbearers will be Scott Fant, William Jeter, Carlisle Oxner, III, Norris Fowler, Dr. David Berry, Dr. David Keith and Trip Sheorn.

The Union Rotary Club, Bannie Kennedy and Dr. Stan James are asked to assembly at the Church at 10:45 AM to form the Honorary escort.

Frances Rebecca Brown
Buffalo, SC

Mrs. Frances Rebecca “Becky” Brown, age 51 of Gist Bridge Rd.. Buffalo, SC, widow of Jim Brown passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born in Union, SC May 29, 1961, a daughter of Billy Kelly and Elliotte Lancaster Kelly of Buffalo. She was previously employed with Jameson Inn in Gaffney and was a member of Putman Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Jean Kelly Smith; two nieces: Christi Smith Yeatts and husband Jason and Kim Smith and a great-niece Julianna Yeatts all of Boiling Springs.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Rick Henderson.

Visitation will be held 12:45-1:45 PM Thursday in the church prior to the service.

Mrs. Ola Rook Kirby of Pacolet , SC passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Bright was born in Union, SC July 27, 1945, a daughter of the late John Franklin Queen and Kathleen Knox Queen. She retired from United Merchants - Buffalo Plant after thirty years of service. Mrs. Bright was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School and helping with the Food Pantry as along as her health permitted.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kimberly Bright Morgan and husband Brian of Lyman; a son, Kenneth Bright and wife Angie of Union; a brother, Jackie Knox of Jonesville; four grandchildren: Briana Morgan-Shafer of Inman, William Travis Morgan and wife Jessica of Greer, Ashley Bright Anthony and husband Brett and Jordan Bright both of Union; three great-grandchildren: Darian Shafer of Lyman, Colton Anthony of Union and Jake Pee Morgan of Greer; a grandson-in-law, Timothy Shafer of Greer and a special niece, Janice Maness and husband Steve of Buffalo. Mrs. Bright was predeceased by a brother, Norman Winchester.

Mrs. Lou Hulon Ward Smith, age 91, widow of (Ret.) Lt. Col. Rev. Jasper J. Smith, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Oakmont Assisted Living.

Mrs. Smith was born in Newberry, September 20, 1921, a daughter of the late Rufus Armstead Hulon and Fannie Lyles Hulon. She was first married to the late Arthur Earl Ward.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was a retired from Milliken and Company. She was a very active member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and previously at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. She did much volunteer work with the Literacy Council, Meals on Wheels, and served 24 years with the Wallace Thomson Hospital volunteers. Mrs. Smith loved people and was an avid reader and traveled extensively.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law: Hilda Ward Bailey and Bobbie Willard Ward both of Union; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters: Lizzie Hulon Mayo, Nettie Hulon Maika, and Beatrice Hulon Fore; and two brothers: Harold Edwin Hulon and Joseph Burrell Hulon.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Augsburg Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Carroll Robinson. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Mr. Parris was born in Star, SC, a son of the late William Henry Parris and Minnie Parnell Parris. He was retired from DHEC as County Health Inspector and was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. Mr. Parris served as the first President of the Union Co. Fireman’s Association and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lockhart Fire Dept. when it was first established. A longtime member of Lockhart First Baptist Church, Mr. Parris also served as president of the Men’s Sunday School class. He was also a Mason and a Shriner.

Ms. Black was first married to the late Johnny “Hooker” Gregory and secondly married to the late James Mitchell.

Mrs. Ponder was born in Lockhart, January 18, 1945 a daughter of the late George Porter and Willie Vanderford Porter Sweatt. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from Clover Knit. Mrs. Ponder attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son: George “ Tim” Ponder and wife Amie of Union; a niece: Amanda Sweatt of Lockhart; a granddaughter: Alisha Cash of Chester; a grandson: Dalton Vinson of Lockhart; and a great-grandson: Cayden Thomas Cash. Mrs. Ponder was predeceased by a sister: Bobbie Joyce Young.

Miss Ada Lee Pittman, age 100, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Cathedral Towers, Gerontology Center in Jacksonville, FL.

Miss Pittman was born in Los Angeles, CA, May 26, 1912, a daughter of the late John Roland Pittman and Ada Lee Graham Pittman. She had received a degree from the Walsh School of Business in Miami, FL and had retired from City Hall in Jacksonville. Ms. Pittman was a world traveler having visited Europe, Japan, China, Cuba and South America. She was a 30 year member of the Jacksonville Cummer Art Museum and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Miss Pittman was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by several cousins including: Carolyn Reedy (John), Sharon Brown (Terry), Carolyn Marie and Ronnie Brown, Reba Pitts (Wesley), Mac Pitts (Sarah), Brooks Pitts (Cathy), Melissa Robinson, Nicki and Danielle Robinson, Leigh Anne Poole (Jason), Samantha and Ava Poole, Albert Hough (Angela), Cailyn and Rebecca Hough, George Hough, Joel Hough, Mary Louise Robinson (Heyward), Eric, Paul, and Nathan Robinson, Richard Hough (Olga), Pegi Lopez, John Pressley and Paul Pressley. Miss Pittman was predeceased by a sister: Margaret Pittman Dry, four aunts: Annibelle Pittman, Elizabeth Pittman Pitts, Margaret Pittman Pressley, Pearl Pittman and cousins: Wesley M. Pitts, E. Mrs. Holcombe was born in Union, SC September 21, 1944, a daughter of the late Charles Lamon Littlejohn and Cleo Sanders Littlejohn. She retired from Oakmont Nursing Home and attended Faith Baptist as long as her health permitted.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Angie Matthews and husband James, Mandy Adams and husband Kenny; a son, Willie Holcombe all of Union; a sister, Elaine L. Mr. William Bruce Bobo, age 53, loving husband of Sandra Bobo of 624 Brown’s Creek Rd., Union, went to Heaven Saturday, December 8, 2012 after a brief illness.
Mr. Bobo was born in Union April 17, 1959, a son of the late William James “Bill” Bobo and Juanita “Dolly” Johnson Bobo Revels. He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed with Milliken & Company - Gillespie Plant. He was a member of Browns Creek Baptist Church and attended Philippi Baptist Church where he was a Vacation Bible School worker and a member of the Cooking Committee. Mr. Bobo enjoyed cooking and catering with Bruce’s Catering. He also enjoyed being outdoors on fishing trips with his fishing buddies and cruising through the neighborhood with his wife on his golf cart. Mr. Bobo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Mrs. Betty Jean Brawley Hawkins, age 67, wife of Stanley H. Hawkins of 409 Sims Ave., Union, passed away Friday, December 7, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Hawkins was born in Union, February 21, 1945 a daughter of the late Herman and Clara Prince Jennings. She was a hair-stylist having worked at Rachel’s Beauty Shop and was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Amanda B. Holt of Anderson and Sherry White and husband Roddney of Spartanburg; a son: Rickey Brawley of Edgefield; a sister: Bessie Duncan; a brother: Billy Jennings both of Union; seven grandchildren: Kevin White, Nicholas Pearson, Willie Brawley, Rickie Brawley, Dustin White, Brad Matthews, and Michael Matthews; a step-daughter: Jill Hawkins and a step-son: Brett Hawkins both of Lancaster and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Green. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Herman Blalock, Tony Groves, Lewis Alexander, Jeff Littlejohn, Joe Blalock and Rickey Matthews.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Beth Ann “Bessie” Holcombe, age 60, wife of Walter Eugene Holcombe of 1349 Meansville Rd., Union passed away quietly Friday, December 7, 2012 at her home surrounded by her friends and family after a long illness.

Mrs. Holcombe was born in Union, December 7, 1952 a daughter of Clifford Eugene Reynolds and Mildred Mae “Milly” Lawson Reynolds of Union. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter: Sarah Beth Stevenson and husband Wade Linus Stevenson of Union; a son: David Eugene Holcombe and wife Donna Gayle Holcombe of Union; two sisters: Terri Jean Moore and husband John and Debra Jane Boulware and husband Amos all of Union; a brother: James Michael “Jim” Reynolds and wife Debbie of Newland, NC; two grandchildren: Britney Nicole Holcombe and Dylan Kyle Holcombe; five nieces: Melanie Harris, April and Clay Palmer, Amber and John Crocker, Christie Reynolds Lyles and Becky Boulware; two nephews: Johnny Boulware and Dennis Reynolds. Mrs. Holcombe was predeceased by five children who passed away in child birth and also a grandson: Jeremy Christopher Holcombe and her grandparents: Edward E. Lawson, Edith Ailene Lawson, Hattie May Lawson and John Manier.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith, Rev. Jimmy Moore and Brother Joe Ballard.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Alexander, John Moore, John Crocker, Bobby Horne, Robert Murphy and Mike McGowan.

Mr. Donald Lee Beard, age 69, husband of Diane Austin Beard of 105 N. Boyce Street, Union, SC passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Beard was born in Union, SC April 24, 1943, a son of the late James Morgan Beard and Helen Morris Beard. He retired from Cone Mill-Carlisle Finishing. Mr. Beard was a member of the Union Church of God where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and he sang with the “Sounds of Praise” in the church and visiting area nursing homes. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served his country while stationed in Italy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Shari Owens Dale of Cross Anchor and Lisa Owens Ochiltree of Greer; a sister, Cora Revis of Union; a brother, Harold Beard and wife Fran of Clyde, NC; three grandchildren: Brad Ochiltree, Payne Corbin and Summer Owens; two great-grandchildren: Maura Ochiltree and Lillie Ochiltree and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Beard was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Taylor.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown and Rev. Alton Stone. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Ed Norman, Gene LeMaster, Jackie Gaston, Allen Mitchell, Brad Ochiltree and Roy Briggs. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:15 PM to form the Honorary Escort: Billy Keisler, Dennis Millwood, Gene Gregory, Colon Duckett, Marion McAbee and Dr. John Cody.

Mrs. Frances Howell Candler, age 78, wife of Howard Candler of 1317 Meansville Rd., Union, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Candler was born in Union, July 15, 1934, a daughter of the late Herbert and Onie Johnson Howell. She was a 1954 graduate of Union High School and was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant. Mrs. Candler was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies #3 Sunday School class.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 56 years are a daughter: Janet Bradburn of Spartanburg; three sons: Joel Candler and wife Perette, and George Candler all of Union and Rev. Terry Candler and wife Denise of Pullman, WA; nine grandchildren: Becky Worthy and husband Jason, David Candler, Zachary Candler, Chastity Crawford and husband Jerry, Trey Palmer, Nikki Palmer, Sydney Candler, Sophey Candler, and Simon Candler; three great-grandchildren: Ryley Palmer, Kara Palmer and Elijah Crawford. Mrs. Candler was predeceased by a grandson: Joshua Candler; two sisters: Geraldine Bridges and Doris Palmer; and three brothers: Donald Howell, Maurice Howell and Wade Howell.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ella Faye Robinson

Ella Faye Stalsworth Robinson, 86, widow of Raymond Leonard Robinson of 2251 Lockhart Hwy, Union, passed gently into God's care on December 2, 2012.

Mrs. Robinson was born on May 22, 1926, in Knoxville, TN, the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Stalsworth and Lucy Viola Chadwick Stalsworth. She served as a courier for the United States Government at Oak Ridge during World War II. While visiting her aunt in Delane, FL, she met her husband who was stationed in the Navy.

Mrs. Robinson worked at Excelsior Mill where she was the switchboard operator and receptionist, and she greeted all visitors with her lovely smile. She later worked in the lab at Milliken Research Facility in Spartanburg from which she retired. She was a devout church member of Philippi Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She sang in a trio with Ed Gibson and Ronnie Crocker sharing God's love with her beautiful voice. Mrs. Robinson was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother

She is survived by four devoted and loving children: Sherry Connell and husband John of Central, Cathy Robinson, Tim Robinson and wife Kathy, and Melanie Rabb and husband Bo all of Union. Her grandchildren are Katie Connell of Seneca, John Connell of Salt Lake City, UT, Laura Connell of Greenville, Reah Robinson of Union, and Raven Sumner and husband Chris of Colorado Springs,CO. Her great-grandchildren are DeAndre, Jaida, Tatiana, Carmen, Maddox, Hayden, and Spenser. She is also survived by her sister Eula Hale of Knoxville, TN. She has many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Robinson’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Members of the Philippi Baptist Church Choir, past and present, and caregivers with Harmony Care Hospice are asked to form the honorary escort.

Mr. Dallas Ronald Fisher, age 69, widower of Linda Gail Berry Fisher of 408 Meansville Rd., Lot 13, Union, SC died Saturday, December 1, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Fisher was born in Union, SC., January 21, 1943, a son of the late James Dallas Fisher and Kathleen Bouleware Fisher Eller. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and retired from the Union Housing Authority after 22 years. Mr. Fisher was an avid fisherman, baseball player and coached Dixie Youth Baseball for many years.

Surviving are two daughters: Stacy Fisher Massad of Summerville and Jessica Kathleen Fisher and Fiancé Charles Craig of Buffalo; a son: Kevin O’Neil Fisher and wife Carol Ann of the home; three sisters: Virgie Fisher Horne of Summerville, Marlene Eller Whitehead and husband James of Buffalo and Teresa Eller Boiter and husband David of Inman; a brother: Arley Eller and wife Brenda of Buffalo; grandchildren: Dallas Massad, Devin Fisher and Bethany Henderson; a special friend: Barbara Gallman of Union and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Fisher was predeceased by a son: Rodney Dallas Fisher, a brother: Curtis Maze Eller and his step-father: Garland Eller.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Kevin Dalton, Rev. Johnny Burgess and life long friend: Jimmy Maness. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Massey, Danny McGlocklin, Jimmy Maness, James Whitehead, Walker Smith and Philip Fisher. Honorary pallbearers will be Employees of Harmony Hospice.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
