Alma Elizabeth Whitmore

Mrs. Alma Elizabeth Whitmore, age 84 of 137 Hilltop View, Union, widow of Boyd E. Whitmore, passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg.

Mrs. Whitmore was born in Spartanburg, SC June 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Ben McAbee and Della Mae Pressley McAbee. She retired from Milliken & Company, Monarch Plant and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are two sons: Rickie Brewington and wife Nancy of Buffalo and Jimmy Brewington of Union; a brother, Darvie McAbee of Idaho; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Whitmore was predeceased by three brothers.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, March 2, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Whitmore’s care giver, Brittney.

The family is at the home, 137 Hilltop View, Union, where they will receive friends 2:00-4:00 PM Thursday.

Amanda Fields Powers
Union, SC

Mrs. Amanda Fields Powers, age 45 of 149 Martin Rd., Union, wife of Joseph Powers, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Powers was born in Union, SC October 1, 1966, a daughter of Geraldine Grant and the late Eugene Jefferson Fields. She was a graduate of Union High School; was employed with Waffle House and was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother and husband are three daughters, Victoria Alexis Powers of the home, Tabatha Fine of West Virginia and Haley Powers Parks of Boiling Springs; a son, Chris Vanderford of Lyman; two sisters: Tammie Henderson and Maryann Wright both of Spartanburg; a brother, Mike Fields of Union and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Fannie Mae Weathers
Pacolet, S.C.

Mrs. Fannie Mae Weathers, age 82, formerly of Pacolet, passed away, Sunday, February 26, 2012 the Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Weathers was born in Glenn Springs, October 4, 1929, a daughter of the late Johnny and Clara Brewington Weathers. She had retired as a home health care giver and was a member of Sulpher Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Weather was first married to the late Ernest Motts and secondly married to the late Everett Wynn.

Surviving are a daughter: Kathy Jones and husband Johnny of Buffalo; a sister: Frances Weathers of Pacolet; a grandson: Ernie Weathers of Buffalo; great-grandchildren: Cody Weathers and Jennifer Bennett both of Homer GA. Mrs. Weathers was predeceased by grandson: Frankie Weathers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Ford and Mr. Paul Maness. Burial will be in at the First Baptist Church of Pacolet.

Active pallbearers will be Lloyd Stanifer, Robert Calhoun, Harold Dean Weathers, Jack Motts, Leslie Weathers and Jerry Turner.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Kathy and Johnny Jones, 1011 Main St., Buffalo.

Charles A. "Bud" Donnels
Buffalo, S.C.

Mr. Charles Allen “Bud” Donnels, age 69, widower of Joann Thompson Donnels of 492 Putman Rd., Buffalo, passed away, Monday, February 27, 2012 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Donnels was born in Spartanburg, October 11, 1942, a son of the late George Grimm Donnels and Grace Adams Donnels. He was retired from Jeffrey Manufacturing in Woodruff and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter: Tina Donnels Babb and husband Wayne of Travelers Rest; two sisters: Margie Burgess and husband Terry of the Putman community and Lucy Matthews of Woodruff; three brothers: Frank Donnels and wife Mary of Dorchester, Roy Donnels and wife Carolyn of Woodruff and Phillip Donnels and wife Barbara of Switzer; two grandchildren: Blade and Braxton Babb; and special friends, Donald and Virginia Babb of Buffalo. Mr. Donnels was predeceased by a sister, Dona Cooper and a brother, Ray Donnels.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Henderson and Chaplain Dave Garner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Burgess, Terry Burgess, III, Donald Babb, Mike Matthews, Jerry Burgess and Danny Ray Malpass.

Nursing and staff of Heartland Hospice are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Donnels will be carried to the home of his sister, Margie and Terry Burgess, 496 Putman Rd., Tuesday afternoon where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Sandra Pelham Kirby, age 60, widow of Bobby Dean Kirby, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Union, SC., died Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Union, SC., October 1, 1951, a daughter of the late James Hubert Pelham, Jr. and Eddie Mae Horne. She attended Jonesville High School and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are two daughters: Kristy Farr and husband Andrew of Union, and Tammy Kirby of Union; four grandsons: Christopher Wyatt, Bryan Belue, Austin Williams all of Union, and Jonathan Phillips of IN, and one granddaughter: Keirstin Williams of Union; two sisters: Mary Hill and Paula Pelham both of Union; two brothers: Dexter Pelham and wife Sue of Jonesville and Steve Pelham and wife Debra of AL; brother-in-law: Charlie Ray Kirby and wife Sue of NC; a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend: Rebecca Beheler.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Church of Christ-Union conducted by Pastor Doug English. Burial will follow in Gilead Baptist Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Saturday afternoon at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home-Union.

Donald M. Warren
Union, S.C.

Mr. Donald McClure “Judo” Warren, age 79, of Union, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2012 at National Health Care in Clinton.

Mr. Warren was born in Lockhart, January 27, 1933, a son of the late Edward Grier “Slim” Warren and Leila Carver Warren. Mr. Warren was retired from Holcombe Funeral Home having worked and lived there for over 45 years. He was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and the Buffalo Redman Tribe.

Surviving are three sisters: Doris W. Whitlock of Summerville, Carol W. Mitchell of Union and Betty W. Pharr and husband Harold of Conway. He was a loving and caring uncle to several nieces and nephews that he helped raise. Mr. Warren was predeceased by a sister, Sybil W. Holcombe.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Jim Palmer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens

Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: Nick Whitlock, Gene Pharr, Roger Dale Thomason, Roger Thomason, Billy Haire and Chuck Douglass.

Family and employees of Holcombe Funeral Home are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Buford Ronald McKeown
Pacolet, SC

Mr. Buford Ronald McKeown, age 68 of 140 Quarter Round Rd., Pacolet, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McKeown was born in Union, SC June 25, 1943, a son of the late Buford Fraser McKeown and Florence Knox McKeown. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Crystal McKeown of the home; a son, Jimmy McKeown and wife Buffy of Gaffney; three grandchildren: Kayla McKeown, Caroline Clary and Leighton Clary all of Gaffney, a sister, Margaret Roark and a brother, Earl McKeown both of Union. Mr. McKeown was predeceased by a son, Billy Ray McKeown and a sister, Rita Bowers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Christopher Greene and Rev Clyde Thomas. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:45-3:00 PM Saturday in the church prior to the service.

James “Wall Socket” Roberts
Cowpens, SC

Mr. James Henry “Wall Socket” Roberts, age 83 of 445 Mt. Olive Rd., Cowpens, widower of Mildred Knox Roberts, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Upstate Medical Center, Gaffney. Mr. Roberts was formerly of Alman Street , Jonesville.

Mr. Roberts was born in Carlisle, SC December 14, 1928, a son of the late Jim “Pa Jim” Roberts and Ida Maude Sanders Roberts. Mr. Roberts retired from J.P. Stevens - Jonesville Plant and was formerly employed with United Merchants- Buffalo Plant. Mr. Roberts was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are a son, James Thomas Roberts and wife Nita of the home; a step-son, Ed Knox of Roebuck; two grandchildren: David Thomas Roberts and wife Kaci of Cowpens and Casey Roberts of Spartanburg; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Julian “Doodlebug” Roberts and wife Peggy; a sister, Polly Alexander all of Jonesville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Lawton Neely. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday in the church prior to the service.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Teresa Ann Carter
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Teresa Ann Carter, age 59, loving wife of Danny Carter of 315 Fairwood Blvd., Union, went home to be with the Lord and sing with the angels, Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Mrs. Carter was born in Union, April 21, 1952, a daughter of the late Merle Putnam Prince and step-daughter of William Prince of Buffalo. She was a graduate of Union High School and she always considered Buffalo Baptist Church to be her home church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and step-father are two daughters: Dana Marie Privette of Myrtle Beach and Kelly Ann Carter of West Columbia; a sister: Donna Jean Bumgarner and husband Glenn of Whitmire.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2012 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jimmy Skinner. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Mike Moss, Raymond Addis, Tony Ward, Billy Scott, Kevin Addis and Carrol Upton.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Martha Estes Williams

Mrs. Martha Estes Williams, age 67, wife of Robert Charles Williams, Sr., of 924 Lovers Lane Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 19, 2012 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Williams was born in Union County, SC January 25, 1945, a daughter of the late Clarence Poole Estes and Minnie Lou Ivey Estes. She was a member of Hillside Baptist Church . Mrs. Williams retired from Union County School System as a cafeteria manager at Sims Junior High School.

Survivors include a daughter, Elly W. Smith and friend Kent Littlejohn; two sons: Robert C. Williams, Jr and wife Laura and John W. Williams and wife Shannon all of Union; five grandchildren: Rob Williams, Brittany Williams, Caitlin Smith, Abby Williams and Maddie Williams; three sisters: Marian Estes, Ruby Whitmire and Mary Pridemore; two brothers: JW Estes and Donald Estes. Mrs Williams was predeceased by five brothers: DJ, Clarence Jr, George, Leroy and Bruce Estes.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Dwayne Rueter. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Estes, Charles Estes, Bud Whitmire, Roger Sumner, Ed Sealy, George Allan Pridemore, Robert W Williams and Rocky Green. The following are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers: David Pridemore, Joey Estes, Chuck White and Wayne Smith. The nurses and staff of Gentiva are asked to sit in a group.

Jerry Lebron Gibson
Union, SC

Mr. Jerry Lebron Gibson, age 58 of 761 Bentley Town Rd., Union, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012. Mr. Gibson was the widow of Carolyn McKnight Gibson.

Mr. Gibson was born in Lockhart, SC July 12, 1953, a son of the late Robert Lee Gibson and Rosa Lee Owens Gibson. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was employed with Duke Energy for thirty-eight years. Mr. Gibson was a Veteran of the US Army and was of the Christian Faith.

Surviving are a fiancé Christi Bell; two sons: Jamie Gibson and wife Amanda and Jason Gibson and wife Nikki; a sister, Sheila McCorkle and husband John all of Union; six grandchildren: Christian, Shelby, Shyann, Daphne, Blue and Sunny Gibson and three dogs, Peapot, Sissy and Tinker.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, February 20, 2012 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev Stephen Williams.

Visitation will be held 1:30-3:00 PM in the chapel prior to the service.

Karen “Kay Kee” Walker Wilson
Buffalo, SC

Ms. Karen “Kay Kee” Walker Wilson, age 62 of 202 South Street, Buffalo, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Wilson was born in Union, SC June 6, 1949, a daughter of the late Clarence “CD” Walker and Geneall Vinson Walker. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the SC Department of Corrections. Ms. Wilson was of the Christian Faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Hill of Buffalo; a son, Jeffrey Nance of Atlanta; three grandchildren: Kayla Williford of Gaffney, Janna Jordon of Lockhart and Keith Justice of Polk County, NC; two great-grandchildren: Layla Williford and Jayla Williford both of Union; a sister, Lynn Sullivan of Buffalo; a niece, Chasity Ferrell; a nephew, Joshua Sullivan; a great-niece, Adelynn Ferrell all of Union. Ms. Wilson was predeceased by a special friend, Norma Nance.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 6:30 PM Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Aubrey Parks.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service.

The family is at the home, 202 South Street, Buffalo.

Catherine West Finch
Formerly of Buffalo

Mrs. Catherine West Wells Finch, age 93, widow of John Finch, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Finch was born in Union, SC January 16, 1919, a daughter of the late Joseph Lee West and Ella Brown West. She was a 1939 graduate of Union High School and was a retired cosmetologist. Mrs. Finch was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was formerly a Sunday School Teacher of the Junior Department, a member of the WMU, a choir member and a member of the Esther Scarboro Sunday School Class. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Finch was first married to the late Cecil Wells.

Surviving are two sons: Kent Wells and wife Jan, Stanley Wells and wife Brenda; a daughter, Linda Betenbaugh and husband Bruce all of Buffalo; grandchildren: Candy Flynn and husband Jimmy, Paul Wells, Sadie Hallman and husband Todd, Tracey West and husband Don, Scott Farmer and wife Donna and Kevin Farmer and wife Jamie; fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Finch was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kelli Wells; five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 20, 2012 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Michael Wingertsahn. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Finch’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Monday in the church prior to the service.

Mary Lee Garner
Union, SC

Mrs. Mary Lee Blackwood Garner, age 99 of Union, widow of Emmett Garner, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Valley Falls Terrace, Spartanburg, SC.

Mrs. Garner was born in Lockhart, SC, a daughter of the late John Belton Blackwood and Effie Luella Embler Blackwood. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School; had attended Columbia College and was a Librarian. Mrs. Garner was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where she had served as President of Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where she had served as pianist, Sunday School Teacher, President of WMU and BTU Director. She shared her talent by playing the piano for the nursing homes, senior groups and church groups. Mrs. Garner was former President of Union County Council of Farm Women and a former member of Union Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by two brothers, Charles V. Blackwood and Conrad Blackwood and four sisters: Willie B. Cobb, Myrtle B. Meggs, Kathleen Blackwood and Ruth B. Ensley. Mrs. Garner was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are three daughters: Patsy G. Housholder and husband William R. of Johnson City, TN, Gayle G. Parks and husband James R. of Union and Mary G. Anderson and husband Thomas G. of Spartanburg; a grandson, J. Steve Parks of Columbia and a special friend, Barbara Johnson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, February 20, 2012 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by her niece, Rev. Joyce G. Murphy.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Monday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main Street, Union, SC 29379 or to Mt. Joy Baptist Church, 657 Pearidge Hwy, Jonesville, SC 29353.

Michael J. Ward
Jonesville, S.C.

Mr. Michael James Ward, age 61, husband of Linda Glover Ward of 3530 Furman Fendley Hwy., Lot 2, Jonesville, passed away, Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Ward was born in Union, May 19, 1950 a son of the late Clyde Daniel Ward and Dorothy “Dot” Cook Ward. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of the Patriot Guard. Mr. Ward was self-employed as a computer technician and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Christopher James Ward of Kansas, Daniel “Danny” Michael Ward of NC, and Stephen Michael Ward of the home; two sisters: Wanda Jean Ward of Union and Kathy Ward Cothran and husband Clarence of Pacolet; brothers: Timothy Clyde Ward and wife Susan of Campobello and half-brother, Michael Daniels of Greenville.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Julie Ann Barnes.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the service in the chapel.

Carlisle E. Fowler
Jonesville, S.C.

Mr. Carlisle Elliott Fowler, age 95, widower of Bertha Proctor Fowler of 136 T Bishop Rd., Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 after an extended illness.

Mr. Fowler was born in Jonesville, July 12, 1916, a son of the late Coleman Carlisle Fowler and Nannie Pacolet Carter Fowler. He was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mr. Fowler was an avid cattle farmer and loved to work his land. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was first married to the late Doris Fowler Hyatt.

Surviving are a daughter: Barbara F. Woodward; a son: James Elliott Fowler and wife Pearlene; a son-in-law: Robert Burton all of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Michelle Hall, Tammy Greer, Chuck Fowler, Amy Eaves and Neil Burton; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Fowler was predeceased by a daughter, Doris Elaine Burton and a grandson, James Elliott Fowler, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 13, 2012 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. James Ivey and Rev. Roger Byrd.

Active pallbearers will be Chuck Fowler, Edward Hall, Eugene “Butterbean” Sprouse, Wallace Russell, Bobby Lipsey and Clarence Cook.

Mr. Fowler’s caregivers, Elaine, Holly and Lacey, along with Chris Cook, Matt Cook, Bruce Cook, Mr. Warren Little and Frances Joseph McKenna, III will serve as the honorary escort.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home in Union.

Virginia Lell Lewis

Mrs. Virginia Lell Lewis, age 72 of 1049 Erskine Rd., Anderson, widow of Richard Franklin Lewis, Sr., passed away Sunday, February 12, 2012.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Clinton, SC June 21, 1939, a daughter of the late Virgil J. Lell and Lissie Dover Bullman.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by seven children: Debra Roberts of Piedmont, Patricia Lell of Anderson, Louise Lewis of Whitmire, Danny Lewis of Piedmont, Daniel Lewis of Iva, Vince Lell of Florence and Havert Young of Clinton; four sisters: Elizabeth Ann Boggs of Princeton, Gail Chestain, Faye Baker both of Greenville and Pearl Holmes of Clinton; a brother-in-law, Larry Gordon Lewis of Whitmire; two brothers: Bobby Ray Lell of Laurens and Virgil Eugene Lee of Hickory Tavern; fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lewis was predeceased by a son, Richard F. Lewis, Jr; a daughter, Rosa Lee Roper; three sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Hilda Miller Kitchin, age 94, widow of David Jackson Kitchin, II, formerly of Sunset Dr., Union, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Oakleaf Village Assisted Living in Greer.

Mrs. Kitchin was born in Hanover, PA, May 16, 1917 a daughter of the late Annie Virginia Hamm Fickes and Roy Miller. She was a graduate of the Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD and was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters: Sally Kitchin Renuart of Miami, FL and Constance Kitchin Camunas of Greenville; a son: David Jackson Kitchin, III of Sun Lakes, AZ; eight grandchildren: Hollye Berry Gomez, Heather Berry, David Jackson Kitchin, IV, Kyle Kitchin, Craig Kitchin, JoAnna Marie Langdon, Jean-Paul Renuart, and Joseph A. Camunas, Jr. (Jac); and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Joseph Clayton Gilbert, age 71, husband of Brenda Quinn Gilbert of 1164 Sardis Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Gilbert was born in Bunnlevel, NC, a son of the late Arlene Gilbert and Helen Holloman Gilbert. He was retired from Bahnson Heating and Air in Winston-Salem, NC, and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Gilbert was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: JoAnna G. Jordan; a son: Eddie Gilbert and fiancee Shannon Revels all of Union; three granddaughters: Lindsay Danielle Jordan, Emily Kay Jordan and Shelby Nicole Gilbert; five sisters: Jerry G. Palmer, Gaynelle G. Holder, Roxie G. McIntyer, Pansey G. Jones and Judy G. Griffin; and two brothers: Jarvis Gilbert and Tommy Gilbert all of North Carolina. Mr. Gilbert was predeceased by a sister, Patsy G. Rowe and a brother, Randall Gilbert.

Mr. Thomas Wilkins Weathers, age 86, husband of Dorothy Holley Weathers of 124 Bowling Ave., Union, passed away Friday, February 10, 2012 at Oakmont Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Mr. Weathers was born in Shelby, NC, July 13, 1925 a son of the late Rufus Lee Weathers and Susan Elliott Weathers. He was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after 25 years of services. Mr. Weathers was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII.

In 1949, he was the first chief engineer with WBCU Radio. Mr. Weathers was first married to the late Francenia Miller Weathers.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Cindy W. Wofford and husband Lorn of Union, and Beth W. Page of Atlanta, GA; two sons: Danny Weathers of Union, and Michael Weathers and wife Teala of Boiling Springs, SC; two sisters: Pantha Parks of Taylors, and Ola Bowman of Julian, NC; special extended family: Gail Adams, Judy Peahuff, Bobby Holley, Penny Thomas, Brenda Weathers, Jim Page and Teresa Bognar; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mr. Weathers was predeceased by a son, Tommy Weathers, a grandson, Benny Collier, a brother, Rufus Y. Weathers and a sister, Marcie Woods.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Union, November 26, 1921, a daughter of the late John H Fowler and Molly Brown Fowler. She was retired from Milliken Co., and was a charter member of Covenant Baptist Church where she served on several church committees.

Surviving are a son: Ronnie Vinson of Union; two grandsons: Russell Vinson and wife Reba of Jonesville and Patrick Vinson of Union; three sisters: Mary Kate Bobo and husband Bill Laurens, Dorothy Fowler and Marlene Proctor and friend Jim Heatherly all of Union. Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by a brother, James H. “Lefty” Fowler.

Mrs. Edwards was born in the Santuc Community of Union County, SC August 12, 1934, a daughter of the late James Thomas “JT” Dawkins and Mary Johnson Dawkins. She retired from United Merchants Union Plant and was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Mathis of the home; a son, Richard Carl Edwards and wife Amanda of Spartanburg; two sisters: Margaret Willford and husband Paul Dean of the Monarch Community and Ann D. Jones of Summerville; a brother, Richard Paul Dawkins and wife Katie of Goose Creek; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Edwards is predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Dill and a grandson, Christopher Scott Sumner Ist.

Mr. Harmon was born in Union, SC December 3, 1964, a son of Rita Laxton Mason of Spartanburg and the late Carroll Harmon. He was a graduate of Union High School and was employed with Kohler Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Jerry W. Harmon, Jr. of Spartanburg, Stephen Harmon and wife Amie of Campobello and John Harmon of Wellford; a step-daughter, Lacy Goodwin of Wellford; a brother, Randy Harmon of Pacolet and a nephew, Brent Harmon of Spartanburg. Mr. Harmon was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Dean Harmon.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Kelton, April 20, 1934, a daughter of the late Johnny Inman and Eva Gault Inman. She was formerly employed with Mine and Judy’s Restaurant for seventeen years. Mrs. Gregory was retired from Milliken and Co.-Monarch Plant and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, that was known for her southern home cooking and a devoted sister and friend to all who knew her.

Survivors are four daughters: Georgia Queen and husband Rick of Woodruff, Pam Gowan and husband Alan, Linda Wilson and husband Ermy and Patty Berry and fiancee James Knox all of Union; three sons: Eddie Price and wife Lisa, Glenn Berry and friend Rosa Helton and Steve Berry and wife Kathy all of Union; three sisters: Janice Kilpatrick and husband Tom of TX, Mary Wilburn of Union, and Sara Killian and husband Lee of TN.: two brothers: Clarence “Bo” Inman and wife Barbara of Union and Gerald Inman and wife Tootie of TX.; seventeen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grand children. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by two brothers: Herbert Inman and Dean Inman.

Mrs. Comer was born in Rock Hill, January 6, 1930, a daughter of Ruth Hollis Rawls of Rock Hill and the late D.B. Rawls. She was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and was a retired loan officer with Wachovia Bank. Mrs. Comer was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two sons: E. Randall Comer and wife LuAnne of Aiken and F. Keith Comer and wife April of Spartanburg; a sister: Martha R. Oates of Rock Hill; a brother: Bobby G. Rawls of Augusta, GA; seven grandchildren: Sara Comer and Thomas Frazer Comer both of Aiken, Kristtany Danielle Comer, Kayle Madison Comer, Zachry Mason Comer and Veronica Olivia Erwin all of Spartanburg; one great-granddaughter: Aubrey Layla Gaffney also of Spartanburg. Ruth Wix Gregory

Ruth Wix Gregory, 96, widow of George Carlton Gregory, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Buffalo, October 21, 1915, a daughter of the late John Wix and Maude Ingle Wix. She was a 1933 graduate of Union High School, retired from Buffalo Mill United Merchants where she worked in the Supply Room, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, WBCU Mother of the Year 1996, and an active participant in the Senior Citizens Center in Buffalo.

Mrs. Gregory was an active and lifelong member of Buffalo Baptist Church. She served as teacher of the Esther Scarborough Sunday School Class until the age of 93.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Farmer Gregory of Buffalo, and her granddaughter Amy Gregory Young and husband John of Greenwood. Her only child, a son, George Carlton Gregory, Jr. preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gregory was also preceded in death by all of her siblings: Annie Mae Wix Taylor, Daisy Wix Turner, Nellie Wix, Sarah Wix Poole, Sam Wix, Fred Wix, and Joe Wix. A number of nieces and nephews survive her.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home from 6:00 until 7:30 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Buffalo Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hulon was born in Union, February 2, 1933, a daughter of the late Effie Lee Barber. She was formerly employed with Milliken Co. and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hulon was a 1952 graduate of Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her daughter-in-law/special friend/caregiver, Cindy V. Hulon and special sister-in-law: Lou H. Smith are five sisters: Debra Beck of Conway, Donna Kitchens, Linda Ward, Trudy Billings all of Union, and Sylvia Lawson of Spartanburg; three brothers: Bruce Barber of Conway, David Barber, Charles Barber all of Union; one granddaughter: Nicole Sinclair of Union; two great-grandchildren: Kayleigh and Caden both of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. She left behind very special friends: Shirley, Charlie and Kitty Vaughan, and Mary Jo Rogers all of Union, and a very special friend and caregiver: Patty Jackson of Union.

Mrs. Hulon was predeceased by her husband, Joseph B. Hulon and her son: Joseph Michael Hulon.

Mannie Lee Edwards Mabry, age 99, widow of Leon Lawson Mabry, passed away February 3, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was predeceased by her only child, a son, Bobby Lee Mabry and her brother, Johnathan Franklin “Lum” Edwards, Sr.

She is survived by her sister in law: Frances Orr Edwards, one nephew: Rev. John Edwards and wife Dana Reynolds, one niece: Dr. Lillie Bates and husband Ray, two great nephews: Peter and Daniel Bates, one great niece: Betsy Kaye Edwards, two cousins-in-law who were like daughters and many other cousins.

Graveside services will be held Monday, February 6, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Union, and her nephew, Rev. John Edwards. Visitation will follow at the graveside.

Mrs. Mabry, born March 13, 1912, in Union. She was the only daughter of George Douglas Edwards and Lillie Adams Edwards. She attended Union City Schools, graduating from Union High School in 1928. She received a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Winthrop College 1932 with majors in Math, Latin, and French. With no teaching positions available, she began her career as a WPA teacher of adults at Monarch Mill followed by various positions in the business world: Chief Clerk with Agricultural Adjustment Administration; Postal Clerk at Union Post Office during World War II; Teller at Arthur State Bank, Union; Supervisor of Accounting Department, Monarch Mills; Deputy Sheriff, Lee County, FL; Supervisor of Accounting Department, Lee County Bank, Fort Myers, FL retiring after twenty years of service. Through the years, she took night classes in Banking, Accounting, and Spanish.

As a child she joined First Baptist Church, Union, making her membership to local churches as she moved, serving as Sunday School teacher in class and on television, Sunday School Superintendent, being active in the Baptist Training Union and the Woman’s Missionary Union, and serving as Girl’s Auxiliary Leader, Church Historian, and Church Treasurer. Upon retirement, she returned to Union and became active again at First Baptist, Union.

Her hobbies, genealogy and travel, took her to each of the lower 48 states, Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas. In 1981, she served with the committee which published the book, UNION COUNTY HERITAGE. She was an active member of William Wallace Chapter UDC; Fairforest Chapter DAR; Union County Historical Society; and Friends of Union Carneigie Library.

She was a graduate of Spartanburg Technical College and was employed with the US Postal Service at the Pauline post office.

Mrs. Geneva Bentley Kitchen, age 96, widow of Clyde C. Kitchen, of 1003 Philippi Church Rd., Union, passed away, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Kitchen was born in Lockhart, October 24, 1915, a daughter of the late Lon W. Bentley and Jessie Lee Sweatt Bentley. Mrs. Kitchen was formerly employed as a nurse with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Flint, MI.

Mrs. Kitchen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters: Marie B. Turner, Dorothy Bentley, and Mable S. Reynolds, and by four brothers: Alfred Bentley, George Bentley, Russell Bentley and Oscar Sweatt.

Mrs. Jolly was born in Santuck, July 4, 1918, a daughter of the late James and Orrie Sanders Robinson. She was retired from the Union Co. School System having worked in the cafeteria at Monarch Elementary and was a life long member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jolly was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are nieces and nephews: Nancy J. O’Dell, Jim Jolly, Wendell Jolly, Mary Tatum, George Robinson, Pat McAbee, Mary Jo Ramsey, John Robinson, Vivian Jolly, Eddie, Janet and Jeri, and special friends: Carole Ivey, Fred Howard and Dickie Boyd. Mrs. Jolly was predeceased by three sisters: Ruth R. Jolly, Mary Robinson, Ollie Mae R. Jolly and four brothers: J. T. Robinson, Lewis Robinson, Joe Robinson, and Arthur Robinson.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bill Adams.

The family will receive friends in the chapel immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to Mon Aetna Baptist Church, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC 29379.

The family will be at their respective homes.
