Dr. Bobby Gene Rippy
Union, SC

Dr. Bobby Gene Rippy, age 82, husband of Barbara Harter Rippy of 126 Heritage Way, Union, went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 29, 2012.

Dr. Rippy was born in Blacksburg, SC February 10, 1930, a son of the late Mason Rippy and Bessie Driskell Rippy. He was a Veteran of the US Navy; a graduate of Blacksburg High School and a 1963 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Pharmacy. For thirty-four years, Dr. and Mrs. Rippy were the owners and operators of Smith’s Drug Store in downtown Union. After his retirement, he continued working for CVS Drug Stores in Union and Spartanburg. Prior to coming to Union in 1969, the Rippy’s worked for Stone Drug Store in Cowpens where Dr. Rippy was member and Past President of the Cowpens Lions Club. Always community minded, the Rippy’s had sponsored a Dixie Youth Baseball Team for the past fourty-three years and are members of the Union Chamber of Commerce. While in business, the Rippy’s were also active in the Downtown Union Merchants Association. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his devoted wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara H. Rippy are a sister, Doris Glass of Lancaster, SC; a brother, Guy L. Rippy of Boone, NC; two nieces, Prissy Allan and husband Joe of Spartanburg and Leslie Campbell of Clemmons, NC; four nephews: Jimmy Glass of Lancaster, Darrell Rippy of Greensboro, NC, Brian Rippy of Boone, NC and Sam J. Harter of Spartanburg; two special great-nieces and one special great-nephew: Angie Allen and Jeanie Farrell both of Spartanburg and Tom Allen of Charlotte, NC; several other great-nieces and great-nephews; numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and one great-great-great-niece.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Allen, Travis Selby, C.J. Ligon, Gary Lindner, John Fallaw and Freddie Gault.The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM Thursday to form the Honorary Escort: Tim Justice, Merrie and Bobby Bailey, John Flynn, Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Fielder, Joan and Robert Sprouse, Dianne and Earl Coleman, Mickey and Jane Adkins, Roger and Sara Wade, Bruce McCoy, Bill and Chippie Graham, Linda and Bruce Betenbaugh, Joanne and Mark Haney and former employees of Smith’s Drug Store.

Frances C. Austin
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Frances Cooper Austin, age 86, widow of David Woodrow “Woody” Austin, formerly of 3590 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., passed away Monday, October 29, 2012 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Austin was born in Union, October 4, 1926, a daughter of the late Walter Ervin Cooper and Lois Tucker Cooper. She was retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital as nurse’s assistant after 25 years of services and was a member of Hillside Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Joyce Vaughan of NC, Glynnette Scott and husband Ricky and Sherree Malpass and husband Danny Ray all of Buffalo; five sisters: Mable Benton, Melinda Benfield, Margie Caldwell and Betty Richards all of NC and Martha Winchester of Union; 9 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Austin was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Elliott, three sisters: Virginia Cooper, Louise Williams and Juanita Inman and two brothers: Walter Cooper and Johnny Cooper.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Dewayne Rueter. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 Thursday prior to the services at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be Joe Vaughan, Tyson Vaughan, Derek Scott, Hunter Jordan, Blake Jordan, Geramie Lewis, Jake Lewis, Cole Rector and Corey Malpass.

Mrs. Mary Bright Hitt, age 83, widow of William Gordon Hitt of Brittany Manor Apt., Union, passed away Monday, October 29, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Hitt was born in Union, June 18, 1929, a daughter of the late James Dolphus Bright, Sr., and Lois Cartee Bright. She was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two daughters: Miriam Shockley and husband Don of North Augusta, and Debra Robertson and husband George of Union; one son: Tommy Hitt and wife Joyce of Jonesville; a brother: J.D. Bright and wife Judy of Union; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hitt was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Jo Parker; three brothers: Paul Bright, Theo Bright and Albert Bright.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Winnie Rice Gore
Jonesville, S.C.

Mrs. Winnie Rice Gore, age 84, widow of John Gore of 236 Hames Ave., Jonesville, passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Gore was born in Statesville, NC, September 20, 1928, a daughter of the late Wilmer Houston Rice and Rita McCrary Rice. She a member of the Jonesville Church of God.

Surviving are a daughter: Sherry Foster and husband Danny; a grandson: Jeremy Gore and wife Joy all of Jonesville; two great-grandchildren: Matthew Roberts of Jonesville and Miranda Emler of Blacksburg; a sister: Lula Mae Guy and husband George of Statesville, NC.

Mrs. Gore was predeceased by a daughter, Sally West.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at the Jonesville Church of God conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

The family will be at the home of her grandson, Jeremy Gore, 236 Hames Ave., Jonesville and at the home her daughter, Sherry Foster, 346 Fairview St. Jonesville.

Mr. Carol E. Green, age 84, husband of Shirley Lawson Green of 115 Arthur St., Union, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Green was born in Dallas, NC, January 25, 1928, a son of the late Rufus and Angeline Gunter Green. He was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was a member of Welcome Baptist Church. Mr. Green was the last surviving of ten children.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter: Ginger G. Crisp of Union; two sons: Randy Green of Enoree and Everette Green of Union; five grandchildren: Heather Crawford and husband Jeff, Jill Crocker and husband Jamie, Jeffrey Wright, Amanda Green and John Green; six great-grandchildren: Jay Crawford, Jenna Crawford, Haleigh Babb, Mary Beth Babb, Jayci Wright and John Thomas Wright.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Jarvis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jay Crawford, Terry Green, Ronnie Green, Jeff Crawford, Jamie Crocker and Michael Adams.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brenda Lee Dover Duncan, age 69, wife of John Edward Duncan, Sr., formerly of Buffalo, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012 at her home, 119 Keith Lane, Union, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Duncan was born in Union, September 30, 1943, a daughter of the late Leroy and Irene Gault Dover. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and attended New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Joni D. Wilson and husband Joey of Clinton and Lisa D. Davis and husband Charlie of Cross Hill; a son: John E. Duncan, III and wife Suzanne of Jonesville; two step-sons: John E. Duncan, Jr. and wife Katie and Joey Duncan and wife Debbie all of Lake Greenwood; a sister: Ann Peigler and husband Kenneth; a brother: Gene W. Dover; special friends: Teal and Graham Gault and a special nephew: Kenny Peigler all of Union; 11 grandchildren: Jayci Wright, J.T. Wright, Whitney Duncan, Amanda Davis, Brook Davis, Shannon Davis, Michael Duncan, Logan Duncan, Terry Smith, Jamie Duncan and Drew Duncan; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Duncan was predeceased by two brothers: Kenny Dover and James “Bud” Dover.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services and also at the home of her sister, Ann and Kenneth Peigler, 114 Cedar St., Union.

Evelyn B. Tucker

Mrs. Evelyn Boulware Tucker, age 92, widow of James W. Tucker, formerly of Brittany Manor, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Tucker was born in Fairfield Co., August 20, 1920, a daughter of the late Eugene and Minnie Dickerson Boulware. Mrs. Tucker was a graduate of West Springs High School and had retired from Springs Industries in Chester.

Surviving are a daughter: Ruby Lunsford and husband Fred of Fountain Inn; two sons: Roy Tucker of Columbia and Eugene Tucker and wife Hannelore of Chester; four grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tucker was predeceased by four brothers: Gene Boulware of Chester, Lewis Boulware, Luther Boulware and Fletcher Boulware of Union.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 7:30 Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family will be at their respective home.

Mrs. Susan Putnam Justice, age 48, wife of Darrell Eugene Justice of 602 S. Boyce St., Union, passed away Friday, October 19, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Justice was born in Union, December 13, 1963, a daughter of Lucy Morris Putnam of Union and the late Richard Arlen Putnam, Sr. She was formerly employed as a CNA at Oakmont Nursing Home and had also worked as a private health caregiver. Mrs. Justice was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a sister: Beth P. “Sissy” Sprouse and husband Phillip of Union; two brothers: Richard Arlen Putnam, Jr. and friend Debra of Spartanburg, and Michael Putnam and friend Angie Horne of Jonesville; a niece: Tara Putnam; 4 nephews: Eric and Justin Sprouse and Mitchell and Nathan Justice; and one great-nephew: Brayden Sprouse.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Greg Barefoot and Rev. Robert Jarvis.

The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

The family will be at the home of her sister, Beth and Phillip Sprouse, 500 Hart St., Union.

Rebecca C. Rector
Union S.C.

On Friday, October 19, 2012, after an extended illness, Ms. Rebecca Crompton Rector, age 74, joined her heavenly Father.

Ms. Rector was born in Union, January 6, 1938, a daughter of the late Felix “F.A.” Crompton and Lillian Arrowwood Crompton. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing after 20 years service. Ms. Rector attended the Union Church of God and was a devout Christian lady, an avid reader and well known for her exceptional kindness and sweet nature. She was previously married to the late Norman Rector.

Surviving is Delano “Speedy” Thomas, father of her children, who are a daughter: Cindy Head and husband Robert of Union; three sons: Ricky Rector and wife Candy of Woodruff, Scott Rector of the home and John David Rector; nine grandchildren: Christina and Noelle Head, Joshua Hall, Jody, Amy and Vicky Rector, Tosha Pack, Christopher and Thomas Rector; and six great-grandchildren. Ms. Rector was predeceased by three brothers: James Greenway, Curtis and Kenneth Crompton; and infant grandson, Logan Mitchell Rector.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 until 4:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Mr. Thomas Leroy “Tommy” Northern, age 62, husband of Janet McGowan Northern of 308 Sardis Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Northern was born in Union, SC April 22, 1951, a son of Gloria Lowe Northern of Union and the late Beauford Ray Northern. He was a graduate of Union High and had attended USC Union and Greenville Technical College. Mr Northern was a local businessman. He was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and was devoted to his family and friends. Mr. Northern was also an avid fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are three daughters: Beth Weltman and husband Todd, Misty Rhinehart and husband Jimmy Ray and Brandi Clayton and husband Danny; three sons: Joey Northern and wife Rita, Chad Hooper and wife Dawn and Matthew Northern and wife Joy; a sister, Marisa N. Walker and husband Brian; a special granddaughter, Mikayla Mashburn , reared in the home, and thirteen other grandchildren: Lee Moss, Dustin Weltman, Blake Northern, Maleah Adams, Jayna Rhinehart, Kadence Clayton, Davin Keasler, Jordan Hooper, Garrison Hooper, Parker Northern, Chandler Northern, Richie Mashburn and Austin Mashburn; a great-grandchild, Bentley Weltman and a nephew, Heath Walker.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 19, 2012 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wayne Cooke, Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Jane Gibbs Arthur
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Gibbs Arthur, age 85, widow of James M. Arthur of 207 S. Boyce St., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Monday October 15, 2012.

Mrs. Arthur was born in Union, November 1, 1926, a daughter of the late Luther N. Gibbs and Bessie M. Noland Gibbs. She was a 1943 graduate of Union High School and began work at Excelsior Woolen Mill until 1962. In 1962, she started working full time with her husband in his law firm until his death on January 21, 1996. After the death of Mr. Arthur, she began working in Bill All’s law firm and continued to work with All & Frost, LLC until February, 2012.

Mrs. Arthur was very active at Tabernacle Baptist Church where she loved her church and its people. An avid Gamecock fan, she had been a member of the Gamecock Club for 44 years and regularly attended the Carolina football games for over 42 years.

Surviving are four children: James M. “Jimmy” Arthur, Jr. and wife Penny Hecht Arthur, Luther G. “Gib” Arthur and wife Jane Parks Arthur all of Union; Robert J. Arthur and wife Heather Cordell Arthur of Franklin, TN and Amy A. Kosanovic and husband Richard A. Kosanovic of Thailand ; four sisters: Maria G. Arthur, Annie Mae Gibbs, Ella Faye Gibbs, and Barbara G. Smith and husband Ralph all of Union; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Arthur was predeceased by two sisters Betty G. Burgess and Sara Catherine Gibbs.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 19, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Edith Kirby Howell, age 98, wife of William T. Howell, Sr., of 205 Spruce St., Union passed away, Tuesday, October 15, 2012 in Tuomey Healthcare Center in Sumter after a long illness.

Mrs. Howell was born in Jonesville, December 27, 1913, a daughter of the late Josh and Pearl Fowler Kirby. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Union.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: William T. “Tommy” Howell, Jr., and wife Sandra Yount Howell and Richard S. “Steve” Howell and wife Tammi K. Howell all of Sumter; a sister Dorcas K. Waldrop of Spartanburg; five grandchildren: Trey Howell, Stephanie Barrineau, Grayson Howell, Marcus Howell and Mallissia White; and 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Howell was predeceased by two brothers: J.C. Kirby and Bill Kirby.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Dewayne “Buddy” Allen
Lockhart, S.C.

Mr. Dewayne “Buddy” Allen, age 77, husband of Murrell “Butchie” Allen of 302 S. 6th St., Lockhart, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 14, 2012.

Mr. Allen was born in Lockhart, March 14, 1935, a son of the late Fred and Annie Crocker Allen. Mr. Allen was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a veteran of the US Army. He was retired from Chester Telephone Co., and had previously worked with Lockhart Power for 25 years. He was a Mason and was a member of First Baptist Church of Lockhart. Mr. Allen was the last surviving member of the original Riverside Boys.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years, Butchie, are a daughter: Kellie Allen of Lockhart; two sons: Monty Allen and wife Stacy of Nashville, TN and Mike Allen and wife Sylvia of Union; a sister: Virginia Bailey of Abbeville; a sister-in-law: Janice Allen of Lockhart; and four granchildren: Lucas Kyle Allen, Catherine Leigh Allen, MacKenzie Greer Allen, and Grayson Lane Allen. Mr. Allen was predeceased by a brother, Elderidge “Tiny” Allen.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Donald Curtis “Duck” Sanders
Buffalo, SC

Mr. Donald Curtis “Duck” Sanders, age 67, husband of Jancie Toney Sanders of 2038 Main Street, Buffalo, SC, passed way Sunday, evening, October14, 2012 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital..

Mr. Sanders was born in Jonesville, SC, on June 3, 1945, a son of the late Curtis F. Sanders and Eva Mae Vinson Sanders. He was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church and was retired from Cone Mills –Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: a granddaughter Casey Woodard ; a god- child Tyler Paige , both of Union; his very special companion “Girl” of the home; a sister, Betty Jean Eskew of Greenville; two brothers Hugh Sanders and wife Becky of Buffalo and Hubert Sanders and wife Loretta of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Sanders was pre-deceased by a brother, Harold Dean Sanders and a special aunt, Hazel Sanders Lawson.

Mary Crocker Arthur
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Mary Crocker Arthur, age 85, widow of William L. “Bill” Arthur of 115 Harris Dr., Union, passed away suddenly Friday, October 12, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Arthur was born in Union, SC., September 25, 1927, a daughter of the late William J. Crocker and Annie Shirley Crocker. She was a 1945 graduate of Union High School and worked for 22 years with Sears and Roebuck Company in Union. After 25 years, Mrs Arthur retired from the Jeter Agency as a real estate agent. Mrs. Arthur was a lifelong member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and a former Sunday School Teacher. In 1977, she served on the building committee charged with overseeing construction of the present sanctuary. She was a member of the Union Civitan Club.

Surviving are a son: William Earl Sprouse of the home; a brother: Rev. Dr. James W. Crocker, Sr. and wife Jerre S. Crocker of Boiling Springs; two nephews: James W. Crocker, Jr. and wife Nancy of Inman and Harold G. Crocker, Jr. and wife Diane of New York; a niece: Jan C. Stiles of Greer; and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Arthur was predeceased by two brothers: Harold G. Crocker, Sr. and Rev. Bobby G. Crocker.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. James W. Crocker, Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Greg Barefoot.. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 2:45 PM Sunday at Mon- Aetna Baptist Church prior to the service.

Mrs. Carolyn Price Godfrey, age 71, wife of Abrain Christopher Godfrey of 1097 Monarch Hwy, Union, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Godfrey was formerly of Woodruff.

Mrs. Godfrey was born in Enoree, SC September 24, 1941, a daughter of the late John Henry Casey and Carrie Cathcart Casey Robinson. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Trudy P. Lipsey and husband John of Union; a sister, Jackie Olivera of Texas; a step-daughter, Hazel Rice and husband Marcel of Woodruff; seven grandchildren: John Lipsey, Jr. and wife Karen, Jethro Lipsey, Marie Lipsey, Candice Glover, Constance Glover, Christoper Waters and Jerome Waters; six great-grandchildren: Mikala and Tyelar Lipsey, Jadalyn Procter, Averi Clark, Ayonna Waters and Shyndrezz Neal. Mrs. Godfrey was predeceased by a grandson, Roscoe Lipsey.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Rev. David Lewis, Rev. Carrol Caldwell and Rev. Buster Ball. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joseph “Joe” Fant

Mr. Jospeh Connor “Joe” Fant, age 76 formerly of 296 Meansville Rd., Apt H2, Union, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Fant was born in Union, SC January 7, 1936, a son of the late Joseph Preston Fant and Minie Mae Bryant Fant.. He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Sam Fant of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Louise “Lou” Fant of Union and a nephew Perry May of Spartanburg. Mr. Fant was predeceased by three sisters: Helen Foster, Vera May and Lois Woody and six brothers: Iley Fant, Frank May, William “Bill” May, George May, James May and Claude May.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 13, 2012 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Vernon Thornhill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Carroll H. Gregory
Prosperity, SC

Surrounded by his loving family, Carroll H. Gregory, age 79 years, departed this life to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, October 6, 2012. A native of Union County, SC and in declining health for several weeks, Mr. Gregory died while in the Palmetto Health Heart Hospital in Columbia, SC.

The son of the late Sara Frances and Broadus Gregory, Carroll (as he was known to all his friends) of 633 Bonner Baxter Pl., Prosperity, SC (Lake Murray) is survived by his much loved wife of 25 years, Carol Greene Patterson Gregory, one daughter, Julie G. Gallman (David) of Union, a sister, Mrs. Dora G. Bell of Union, and a brother, Jerry Gregory (Beverly) of Columbus, NC. Also surviving are two dear granddaughters, Rebecca and Carolina Gallman, and a sister-in-law, Joan G. Edwards Johnson (David) of Spartanburg. In addition are step-children, David G. Patterson of Union, Vickie S. Edwards of Surfside Beach, John R. Patterson (Heather) of Union; Step grand-children: Jessica Henderson (Leif) of Murrells Inlet, Dale Patterson, Cori Ward and Cathryn Patterson, all of Union; one step-great granddaughter, Hazelei Henderson; nieces: Amy Henderson (Gerald) of West Columbia and Cindy Bell of Atlanta, GA.

Mr. Gregory was a 1952 graduate of Union High School where he played football and basketball. He also attended North Greenville Jr. College where he continued playing football. He retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Plant, after 39 years of service. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Union and also attended the Chapel by the River on Lake Murray. A Mason and a former officer in the Shriners, he was also a former officer in the Elks Club of Union.

Carroll had a great love for his wife, his children, grandchildren, and all of his extended family. He knew how to enjoy life, loved sitting on the porch at his lake home, watching the sunsets, listening to both religious and country music (especially Patsy Cline), visiting with friends and neighbors. He was a friendly, self-proclaimed "people-person" and proved it in his relationships. In his prime he was an avid fisherman and hunter. All the family enjoyed the results when he "cooked up a batch" of his fishing catch of the day.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Mrs. Dora G. Bell of 2839 Whitmire Highway, Union, SC. Visitation will be held at Holcombe Funeral Home on Monday, October 8, from 6-8 pm, with the funeral being held at Hebron Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at 2 pm. Burial will immediately follow in the Church Cemetery. A memorial service for his friends at the lake will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 8am at the Chapel by the Lake on Lake Murray.

Pallbearers will be: Rudolph Kneece, Miles Riley, Richard Sanders, Dale Patterson, Leif Henderson, and Tony Bailey. The Cone Mill retiree group will act as honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Clady Mae Evans Parks, age 84 of 186 Parks Lane, Union, widow of David Jesse Parks, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Parks was born in Kershaw, SC April 24, 1928, a daughter of the late John David Evans and Susie Mae Coker Evans. She retired from United Merchants-Union Plant after forty-three years of service. She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Donna Davis and husband Bobby Joe and Cindy Gaston and husband Tim; a son, David Stanley Parks and wife Deborah; a sister, Doris Jett all of Union; seven grandchildren: April Moore, Hunter Davis, Rebecca Dennis, Stanley Gaston, Bob Davis, Nick Davis and Lori Willis Richards and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Parks was predeceased by two sisters: Agnes Griffith and Margaret Alman.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 5, 2012 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Members of the Madeline Holcombe Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mrs. Frances McDaniel Hogan, age 79, widow of Willie Lee Hogan, formerly of Union, passed away October 2, 2012 at Woodruff Manor after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Union, September 7, 1933, a daughter of the late William Sims McDaniel and Julia Lenora Hord McDaniel. She was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are three daughters: Geraldine Burnette, Cynthia Cook and husband Sammy; and Angela Gail Hogan all of Union; two grandsons: Monty Cooke and wife Tabitha and Jeffrey Cooke and wife Laura all of Union; five great-grandchildren: Hunter Cooke, Holden Cooke Devan Cooke, Jeremy Cooke and Katie Cooke; a niece reared in the home, Shirley M. Farr of Union. Mrs. Hogan was predeceased by two sisters: Elizabeth Hogan and Nellie Smith; two brothers: Copeland McDaniel and Malcolm McDaniel.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Paul Timothy Campbell
Lockhart, S.C

Mr. Paul Timothy Campbell, age 61, of 211 South 2nd St., Lockhart, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Campbell was born in Lockhart, February 7, 1951, a son of the late Williams and Alice Young Campbell. He was a retired logging truck driver.

Surviving are two daughter: Miranda Campbell and Misty; a son Shane Allen all of Lockhart; four grandchildren: Bryanna Horne, Cayden Horne, Alaina Campbell and Lance Cannon; and several brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Betty Shaw Haney, age 81, widow of James E. “Shakey” Haney formerly of Union, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 30, 2012.

Mrs. Haney was born in Union, March 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Hight and Lillian Lawson Shaw. She attended Union High School and was a retired from Conso Products. Mrs. Haney was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter: Susan Phillips and husband Charles M. Phillips with whom she made her home in Fletcher, NC.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jerry Lawson. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services.

Memorials may be made the Union Co. Relay for Life, c/o Beth Lancaster, 800 S. Pinckney St., Union, SC 29379.
