Marion Oliver “Mo” Brown

UNION- Mo Brown, 73, passed away Thursday evening, August 29, 2013 at his residence. He was born on August 30, 1939 in Union County, South Carolina. He most recently resided in Garden City Beach, SC. He was the son of Lois M. Brown of Union, and the late Lewis T. Brown, Sr.

Mo graduated from Union High School where he lettered in several sports and was recently inducted into the Union County Athletic Hall of Fame. He served in the Army National Guard in the late 50's. He was a retired textile executive and most recently operated an antique store, Old Country Antiques. He was a former member of the Gaffney and Union Rotary clubs where he had served as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother, Mo is survived by four children: Brad (Kim) of Dewy Rose, GA; Motte (Beth) of Debary, FL; and Jason “Petey” Brown of Boiling Springs, SC and one daughter Marian “Pooh” Peeler (Will) of Roebuck, SC. He was a loving “Papa” to ten grandchildren: Raleigh, Eric, Sophie, Grace, Henry, Luke, Oliver, and Olivia Brown and Jase and Jackson Peeler. He is also survived by a brother Wayne (Debbie) Brown and two sisters JoAnn Davis (George) and Judy Wood. He was predeceased by his father and two brothers Lewis T. Brown, Jr. and Ronnie Brown.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Richard Lancaster.

Active pallbearers will be Mitchell Jenkins, Chuck Malone, Eric Brown, Wayne Brown, Jr., Timothy Childers, Bill Peeler, Hubert Sanders, Matt Childers. The following are asked to be honorary pallbearers, Reese and Barry O’Dell.

Visitation will be from 1:30 until 2:45 PM Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 W. South St., Union.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, SC 29303.

The family will be at the home of his daughter at 208 Raspberry Ct., Roebuck, SC.

Mr. Terry Alton Blackwood, age 50, of 668 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Blackwood was born in Union, SC on October 30, 1962 a son of Frankie Earls Ivey and the late Billy Franklin Blackwood, Sr. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Brooke Blackwood of Abbeville, SC and Amber Blackwood of Union; one sister Sherri Todd and husband David of Fletcher, NC; two grandchildren, Mason Harvey and Ava Grace Blackwood of Union, SC. He was predeceased by a brother Billy Franklin Blackwood, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by President Jay Larsen and Joseph B. Larsen. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Earls, Jackie Earls, Jr., Jackie Earls, Sr., Jason McAbee, Stanley Howell, and David Todd.

Visitation will be held from 1:45 until 2:45 PM prior to the services.

Peggy Anne Browning Duncan
Union, SC


Peggy Anne Browning Duncan, Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Devoted Friend joined her Lord and Savior on August 24, 2013. Peggy was born November 24, 1929 in Spartanburg, SC, to William Edward Browning and Corinne Ormand Browning. Peggy grew up in SC and NC where she attended Central High School in Charlotte, NC and later attended Limestone College in Gaffney, SC. She was married to the late Robert McDow Duncan of Union SC.

While attending Limestone, Peggy made close friends who introduced her to her husband Rob. Peggy and Rob married at Meyers Park Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC and later settled in Union, SC; where she spent the remainder of her life.

Peggy has been active in her church, First Presbyterian of Union, where she served in many roles. She served as a Shepparding Group Leader, President of Women of the Church, and most recently she helped with providing flowers for Sunday Services. She is remembered by many in Union as a loving preschool teacher having taught at First Presbyterian, Duncan Acres Methodist and Public School, most recently Monarch Elementary. She also served on many community committees and organizations such as the Junior League, the Friends of the Library, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Peggy was always a selfless worker and will be particularly remembered for helping to organize the decorating of Rose Hill, the home of a former SC Governor, for Christmas.

Most knew Peggy as the friend who was always there, driving to doctor’s appointments, making hospital visits, and always being there when needed. She was a most loved and cherished friend and will be greatly missed.

Peggy is survived by her sister Doris Broadway and twin brother Bill Browning and wife Catherine Browning; children Robert M. Duncan, Jr. and grandson Mac Duncan; daughter Laura Koning and husband Thomas Koning and granddaughters Claire and Paige Koning. Peggy is predeceased by husband Robert M. Duncan and brother, Donald Browning.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 29, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Keith Morrison and Rev. Robert Alexander. Burial will be held at Presbyterian Cemetery. Peggy’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

John F. “Frank” Boughman
Union, S.C.


Mr. John Franklin “Frank” Boughman, age 57, widower of Penny Fisher Bougham, passed away at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Boughman was born in Union, January 25, 1956, a son of the late John Henry and Mary Walsh Boughman. He was a retired textile worker and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Boughman was a member of the Santuck Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are a sister, Debra Wilson; two brothers, Jerry Boughman and Dennis Boughman and wife Karen all of Union; an aunt, Pansy B. Bourne of Union; three uncles, George Boughman of Union, Timothy Boughman of Daytona Beach, FL and Ben Walsh of Ferguson, NC; nieces and nephews, Ashley Wilson, Brooke Wilson, Deidre Wilson, Heather Wilson, Alexis McGowan, Ayden Boughman, John Turner, Matthew Fisher and Maise Fisher.

Mr. Boughman was predeceased by a sister, Mary Laura Boughman and an infant brother.

Graveside services will be held 12:00 noon, Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jim Wiseman.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Debra Wilson, 316 Wilson Rd., Union, where they will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Nannie Lou S. Nance

Mrs. Nannie Lou Stewart Nance, age 90, widow of Robert L. “Buck” Nance, Jr., formerly of Whitmire Hwy., Union, passed away August 21, 2013 at Skylyn Place in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Nance was born in Union, April 20, 1923, a daughter of the late Dalton and Eloise Estes Stewart. She had worked with Milliken Co., Excelsior Plant during WWII and retired from Her Majesty of Union. Mrs. Nance was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she also retired as a caregiver with the children’s Daycare Center.

Surviving are a daughter, Marcia N. Wilson and husband Jack of Spartanburg; a sister, Sara Belue of Rock Hill; two granddaughters, Marie Nance Heckard and husband Richard of Rock Hill and Lindzey Neely and husband Rev. Hudson Neely of Nashville, TN; three great-grandsons: James and Harris Heckard and Wilson Neely. Mrs. Nance was predeceased by a son, Robert Hal Nance; two sisters, Jumelle Estes and Myrtle Ferguson and three brothers, Paul, Guy and Fred Stewart.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 23, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman, Rev. Hudson Neely and Mr. Richard Heckard. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Marion Stewart, Chris Stewart, Jim Stewart, Mike Nance, Perry Harmon, Eddie Jolly, Billy Medford and Barry Sims.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 7:30 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

SFC (Army Retired) Acie E. “Bill” Blanton
Union, SC


Mr. Acie Edwin “Bill” Blanton, age 81 widower of Nellie Waldrop Blanton, formerly of Union, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 18, 2013.

A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Blanton was born in Woodruff, May 24, 1932, a son of the late Joseph Franklin Blanton and Grace Leake Blanton Mason. Mr. Blanton retired from the US Army in 1971, having served most of his career with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served one tour of duty in Germany and one tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. Some of his service awards include the Master Parachutist Badge, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal, four awards of the Army Good Conduct Medal along with many others. He had several letters of Commendation and letters of Appreciation.

Mr. Blanton was member Mt. Joy Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Brother Hood Director and other offices in the church. He was a member and Past Master of the Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge # 203. He also was a member of the Vietnam Veteran of America, Inc. Chapter No. 0644, and a member o the American Legion, Post # 0087 of Buffalo.

Mr. Blanton was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are a daughter, Linda B. Jolly of Union and her fiancee, Robert Lecroy of Pacolet; five grandchildren, Blake Varner and wife Lacey, Ashton Jolly Harris and husband Shane, Derek Jolly, Dustin Blanton and wife Stephanie and Daniel Blanton; three great-grandchildren, Natalie Harris, Kenny Blanton, and Bradein Teague; nieces and nephews, Robert M. “Bobby” Blanton, Jr., Lynn Blanton Newman, Melanie Blanton Teague, R.E. “Buddy” Gallman, III, Andrea Gallman Justice and Jeff Atkinson. Mr. Blanton was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Melvin Blanton, two sisters, Louise Jones and Ruth Blanton Cooper, and three brothers, Joseph “Skinny” Blanton, Leander Blanton, and Robert M. “Bob” Blanton, Sr.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West, Rev. Wayne Cooke and Rev. Dr. Robert M. “Bobby” Blanton, Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites and Full Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Atkinson, Trent Atkinson, R.E. “Buddy” Gallman, Jr., R.E. Gallman, IV, John Justice and Brent Whitener.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the church Wednesday prior to the services.

Madison C. Greene, Jr.
Union, S.C.


Mr. Madison C. “Butch” Greene, Jr., age 70, husband of Donna Sue Wetmore Greene of 100 Halden Dr. Union, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, August 16, 2013.

Mr. Greene was born in Union, November 22, 1942, a son of the late Madison C. Greene, Sr. and Frances Webber Greene. He was a graduate of Union High School, attended Spartanburg Technical College and was a retired machinist. Mr. Greene was also a past member of the Army National Guard. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Greene was a Christian by the Grace of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Donna are two daughters, Jennifer Greene of Greenville and Lisa Morris and husband, Rubin of Buffalo; and one special granddaughter, Jordan Morris.

A private Graveside service was held Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 PM., Monday, August 19, 2013 at the home, 100 Halden Dr., Union, SC.

Mr. Arthur Franklin “Frankie” Smith, Jr., age 52 of 6491 Hwy. 56, Pauline, SC., went high upon that mountain to be with the Lord peacefully, Friday, August 16, 2013.

Mr. Smith was born June 27, 1961 in Union, SC., a son of Edwina Pruitt Smith and the late Arthur Franklin Smith, Sr. He was a graduate of Dorman High School and a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Arthur Franklin “Trey” Smith and wife Hannah of Pauline and Adam Smith of Columbus, NC; and a grandson, Teagan Smith of Pauline. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a daughter, Anna Denise Smith.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clint Smith.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Mrs. Lisa Ann Swanson Kirby, age 56, wife of Boyce C. “Bo” Kirby of 139 Whispering Pines Dr., Buffalo, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Vermont, May 12, 1957, a daughter of the late Garry G. and Beverly J. Tucker Swanson. She was a graduate of Union High School, a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Katherine Brackins Kirby and Amanda Gibson Kirby both of Union and Elizabeth A. Kirby of NC; a son, Joshua B. Kirby of Spartanburg; a sister, Joel Browning of GA; two brothers, Bret Swanson and Grae Swanson also of GA; four granddaughters and five grandsons.

A celebration of life service will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Ron Towery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

Mrs. Margaret Hart, age 92, of 208 Hart Road, Jonesville, widow of Mark Carlisle Hart, went to be with the Lord. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Hart was born in Union, May 4, 1921, a daughter of the late Hoyle and Lula Garner Garner. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Youngblood of Cross Hill and Margaret Ann Ledford and husband Marion of Spartanburg; four granddaughters, Joie Lynn Lister and husband Ray of Greer, Tara Youngblood of Moore, Marcia Johnson and husband Mike of Simpsonville, and Nikki Hart of Chester; four grandsons, Jim Hart and wife Julie of Union, Scott DuBose and wife Stephanie of San Diego, CA, David Ledford and Erika Wright of Inman and Evan Ledford of Spartanburg; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Julia Howell of Jonesville; and three special friends, Jane Ledford, Pearline Adams, and Aliceteen Harris all of Union. Mrs. Hart was predeceased by one son, Jim Hart, one grandson, Robert Hart, and two sisters, Dot Howell and Natalee Garner.

Funeral services will be held, 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Glenn Ribelin and Rev. Dr. Jim Spencer. Burial will immediately follow at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the committal service in Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Mr. Charles “Doc” Lancaster, Jr, age 63 of 1815 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville, SC, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at his home. Mr. Lancaster was born in Union, SC November 12, 1949, a son of the late Charles Lancaster, Sr and Joyce Knopp Lancaster. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and had attended USC Union. Mr. Lancaster was a retired truck driver with Milliken & Co. He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Christie Tweed and husband Jeff of Jonesville; a son, Christopher Kelly Lancaster of the home; a sister, Linda L. Tucker and husband Jerry of Pauline; a brother, Frank Lancaster and LaJuan Lancaster of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Garrett, Pressley, Jaycub, Saydee and Karmym; a niece, Cassie Lancaster and three nephews: Rockey Lancaster, Jason Neely and Chad Neely. Mr. Lancaster was predeceased by a son, Jeremy Lancaster.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton.

Clifford Anderson

Mr. Clifford Anderson, age 87, husband of Mary Ruth Robinson Anderson of 202 Walker Street, Union, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Anderson was born in Union, SC September 22, 1925, a son of the late Major Anderson and Maggie Sinclair Anderson. He retired from Wellington Leisure Products and was formerly Parts Manager at Derrick Motors and Roper Chevrolet. Mr. Anderson was a member of McCutcheon Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a life member of Masonic Lodge#75, York Rite Body and the Hejaz Shrine.

Surviving in addition to his wife,are a son, Donald Wayne Anderson of Union; two grandsons: Michael Anderson and wife Lawayne and Richie Anderson all of Buffalo; four great-grandchildren: Wayne Anderson, Jared Anderson, Cheyenne Anderson and Jace Anderson; two sisters: Hope Smith of Union and Trudy Cooper of Whitmire.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 10, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb. Entombment will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.

Active pallbearers will be Dale Robinson, Brian Robinson, Gene Robinson, Mike Robinson, Jared Anderson and Zach Arthur. The following are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers: Bobby Vaughan, Dr. Thomas Young, J.D. Bright, Eddie Edwards, Danny Hawkins, Howard Whitehead and Mike Carter.

Roy Lee Revis
Spartanburg, SC


Mr. Roy Lee Revis, age 70, of Spartanburg, passed away at his home of August 2, 2013.

Mr. Revis was born in Union, July 9, 1943, a son of the late Rev. Lloyd Dever Revis and Eula Lee Pack Revis.  He attended Union High School and had work in the textile industry.  Mr. Revis was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Brandi Revis and Ashley Hooper; two granddaughters, Emily Foster and McKenzie Revis; three sisters: Doris Harrison of Boiling Springs, Carol R. Wilburn and Louise Smith; and one brother Harold D. Revis all of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Revis was predeceased by a sister, Laverne Cavander and two brothers, Maxie Revis and Charles Revis.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.

James “JT” Palmer, Jr
Union, SC


Mr. James T. “JT” Palmer, Jr, age 93, husband of Ethel Jones Palmer of 604 N. Pinckney Street, Union, passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Palmer was born in Union, SC February 4, 1920, a son of the late James T. Palmer, Sr and Mary Vaughan Palmer. He retired from Milliken & Co - Excelsior Mills and was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Palmer was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where he served as usher as long as his health permitted. He was also a member of DAV, the American Legion Post 22 and VFW. Mr. Palmer was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Julie P. Garrett and husband Jeff of Lexington, NC; two granddaughters, Melissa Garrett Bracey and husband Alex of Mt. Airey, NC and Caroline Garrett of Lexington, NC. Mr. Palmer was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters: Vaughan Palmer, Clyde Palmer, Frank Palmer, Ralph Palmer, Azilee P. Vaughan, Lillie Ruth P. Gibson and Rhoda Nell P. Bentley.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 5, 2013 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Wayne Cooke. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Eddie Gibson, Steve Gibson, Bobby Hyatt, Monte Cooke, Hunter Cooke and Mike Palmer.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helen Allison McSwain, age 90 of 3477 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy, Union, widow of Arvell McSwain, passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. McSwain was born in Union, SC November 1, 1922, a daughter of the late Will M. Allison and Bertha Petty Allison. She retired from Conso Products and was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a nephew, Ronnie Swanger and wife Elaine of the home. Mrs. McSwain was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Hope and Betty Gregory.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 5, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bill Vanderford. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. James C. Howell, age 74, husband of Joan Copeland Howell of 3061 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Mr. Howell was born in Union Co., September 24, 1938, a son of the late William Henry “Babe” Howell and Emma Lavonia Gregory Howell. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, the Buffalo Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, Loyal Order of the Redman and was very active with Shriners.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 53 years are two sons: Terry Howell and Eddie Howell and wife Sherry all of Buffalo; two grandchildren: Cole Howell of Buffalo and Melissa Becker and husband Mike of Hartsville, TN; two step-grandchildren: Trey Clark and Nate Clark; three great-grandchildren: Brice Holden, Reina Becker, Anna Becker and one sister, Willie Howell Kirby. Mr. Howell was predeceased by two brothers, Woodrow Howell and Bill Howell and five sisters, Virginia “Jennie” Brown, Evelyn Knox, Roselee Morgan, Fannie Ruth West and Mertie Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Ron Towery and Rev. Kevin Dalton. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will Jimmy Warr, Dean Mills, Tracy Smith, Bill Rabb, Tony Peay and Mark Mills.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM Saturday to form the honorary escort: Henry and Elizabeth Manness, Myrtle Littlejohn, Jimmy Manness, Felston Ridings, Tammie Warr and Teressa Rabb.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
