Edith C. Blackwell

Mrs. Edith Carter Blackwell, age 97, widow of William Marvin Blackwell, Sr., of 208 Bennett St., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 29, 2013.

Mrs. Blackwell was born in Lockhart, December 12, 1915 a daughter of the late John and Dorcas Grice Carter. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant. Mrs. Blackwell was the oldest living member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School in the Primary Dept. for thirty years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons, William M. “Bill” Blackwell, Jr. and Kenneth Earl Blackwell and wife Cindy all of the home; a granddaughter, Carolyn Annette Blackwell, two step-grandsons, Nathaniel Conder and Brian Conder; and two great-granddaughters: Ayvah and Lily Conder. She was predeceased by nine sisters; Alice Gorman, Rosalee King, Elizabeth Beatty, Virginia Bargerstock, Kate Gravely, Ethel Hall, Ruth Gowan, Beatrice Plemmons, and Mary Farr and one brother: James Floyd Carter.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz and Rev. Terry Mitchell. Burial will be at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff and nurses of Medi Home Hospice, especially to Destiny, Beth, Jenny, Dennis and Jennifer for their care and concern of Mrs. Blackwell during her illness.

Kevin W. McCarley

Mr. Kevin Whaley McCarley, age 42 of 108 Merriman Ave., Union, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. McCarley was born in Union, March 9, 1971, a son of John David McCarley and Margaret Whaley McCarley of Union. He was a 1989 graduate of Union High School, attended the University of South Carolina, Columbia and was an Academic Honor Exchange student to the University of Northern Arizona. Mr. McCarley received his Bachelor of Science degree from Limestone College and received his MBA degree from Winthrop University.

He was previously employed as a project manager with DeWolff, Boberg and Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm. His work led to travels in England, Wales, Canada, Australia, South America and throughout the United States. Mr. McCarley was an avid Gamecock fan and auto enthusiast. He maintained his love of playing tennis competitively, since having played at Union High School where he had been offered several scholarships in the sport.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Julia McCarley Bass and husband Alan of Myrtle Beach; a brother, J.D. McCarley and wife Amy; a niece, Abby McCarley and nephew, Cody McCarley all of Union.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Union conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be David Kingsmore, Phillip Jett, Jackie Earls, Roger Caldwell, Cody McCarley, Mikey Callahan, Ethan Pendleton and Reese Pendleton.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM Saturday to form the honorary escort: Rod Knight, Tony Moss, Dean “Chip” Mason, Curtis Owens, Monte Means, Brian Davis, Jason Steele, Lynn Woods, Dennis Gregory, Kevin Hendrix, Davey Betenbaugh, Dean Gregory and Johnny Brown.

Charles Marvin “Butch” Parker, age 59, and wife Gretchen Dawn Eury Parker, age 51, of 2809 Furman Fendley Hwy., Jonesville, passed away, Sunday, July 21, 2013.

Mrs. Parker was born in York, SC, April 17, 1962, a daughter of the late Joseph Jacob Eury and Pauline Smith Eury. She was a graduate of Northwestern High School and was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, two sons, three sisters, Crystal Koch and husband Eddie of Charleston, Melissa Cole and friend Steve Dinges of Lancaster and Cami Maggart of Myrtle Beach; six brothers: Keith Ashe of Hartsville, Dean Ashe of Fountain Inn, Frankie Queen, Charles Queen and Steve Eury all of York and David Eury of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Parker was born in Gastonia, NC, January 23, 1954, a son of the late Paul Abraham Parker and Laura Ellen Penley Parker. Mr. Parker had worked previously as an automobile machanic. Survivors include three daughters, one son, three grandchildren, a sister: Brenda P. Franklin of Prosperity and several nieces and nephews.

Butch and Gretchen were much loved by their family and friends, and they will be dearly missed by all.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Franklin, Daniel Cole, Billy Franklin, John Eury, Johnny Paul Franklin and Steve Dinges.

The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the services.

Buford “Jim” Guyton

Mr. Buford “Jim” Guyton, age 82, husband of Louise Callahan Guyton of 110 Jenkins Street, Union, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Guyton was born in Buffao, SC August 18, 1930, a son of the late Ailene Guyton Plemmons. He retired from Monsanto in Greenwood and was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. Mr. Guyton was a Veteran of the US Air Force and had served in the South Carolina National Guard with the Union and Jonesville Unit. He was first married to the late Patty Wilson Guyton.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Vikki Goldenberg and husband Saul of Alantana, Fl, Mary Jo Shope and husband Joe and Kathy Robertson and husband Tommy all of Buffalo; two sons: Johnny Knox and wife Stephanie of Wellford and Kedd Guyton of Charlotte; two brothers: Joe Plemmons and wife Joyce of Buffalo and Jerry Plemmons and wife Ruby of Union; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Guyton was predeceased by two sisters, Peggy Gregory and Norma Nance and a brother, Ted Plemmons.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, July 26, 2013 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Lewis, Rob Capps, Wayne Cooper, Jason Shope, Tommy Robertson and Mike Gregory.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday evening at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mr. William H. “Bill” Jones, age 86, of 5984 Hwy 308, Laurens, SC, widower of Lucille West Jones, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at National Health Care of Clinton.

Mr. Jones was born in Union County, SC April 29, 1927, a son of the late William J. Jones and Bertha Fowler Jones. He retired from the Union County Sheriff’s Department after twenty years of service. Mr. Jones was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and was a Life Member of Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge having served as Past Master.

Surviving are a son, Ronnie G. Jones and wife Sara of Laurens; four sisters: Edith Proctor of Jonesville, Ethel Palmer and husband J.T., Johnnie West, Betty Grady and Leila Shirley and husband Freddie all of Union; four grandchildren: Angela, David, Tracey and Cristie, eight great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Brent Knox. Mr. Jones was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Sue Knox and two sisters, Ruth Montgomery and Dorothy Cooke.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Sheriff David Taylor, Neil McKeown, Ret. Chief Deputy Roger Gregory, Deputy Tommy Cudd, Lt. Terry Humphries and Deputy Russell Roark.

Members of the Men’s Sunday School Class # 2 of Fairforest Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group. Former and present employees of the Union County Sheriff’s Department are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Mrs. Betty Jo Moore Turner, age 80, of 3025 Lockhart Highway, Union, widow of Reford Turner, went to be with the Lord, Monday, July 22, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Turner was born in Union, on July 10, 1933 a daughter of the late Coley and Fannie Bell “Orr” Moore. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Torrington and Company. Mrs. Turner was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Christine Woody and fiancee Will Johnson of the home; one sister, Nadine Dix of Myrtle Beach, SC; two great-granddaughters, Kaylee Woody and Charlie Johnson both of the home; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by a son, Charles Turner and a brother, Bobby Moore.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Victory Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. David Burrell and Rev. Robert Scott.

Mrs. Rosemarie Faulk “Jackie” Garner, age 56, wife of Truett Hamblin Garner, Jr of 120 Old River Rd., Pacolet, SC passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013 at her home.

Jackie was born in Macon, GA October 14, 1956, a daughter of the late Jack Faulk and Anna DuPree Faulk. She was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Skull Shoals Baptist Church. Jackie was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Crystal G. Sexton and husband Haskel of Moore; a son, Chris Garner and wife Tonya of Atlanta, GA; two sisters: Tina F. Sanders of Macon, GA and Lisa H. Willhite of KY; a brother, Tommy Faulk and wife Loretta of Macon, GA; six grandchildren: Anna M. Garrett, Austin Garner, Haskel Sexton, III, William H. Sexton, Christian T. Sexton and Adam J. Greer and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Loretta Faulk and Rev. Learell Faulk. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jack Fitzhugh Burnett, JR. age 78, husband of Lucille Davis Sizemore Burnett, of 395 Old Buncombe Rd., Union, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013 at his home.

A lifelong resident of the Cross Keys/Sedalia Communities of Union County, Mr. Burnett was born May 25, 1935 a son of the late Jack Fitzhugh Burnett, JR. and Mary Louise Sparks Burnett. He was retire from the Milliken and Company having worked at both the Excelsior and Gillespie plants and was a former member of the SC National Guards. An active member of Padgetts Creek Baptist Church, he served as Chairmen of the cemetery committee and was a trustee of the church.

Having farmed his entire life, Mr. Burnett had served as a commissioner for the Union County Soil-Water Conservation District and had been active with the Union County Farm Bureu. He also was bee-keeper and was active in the Union County Bee Keepers Association. Proud of his community and its historical heritage, Mr. Burnett enjoyed giving tours of homes, churches and cemeteries that trace their history to pre-Revolutionary War America. As a member of both the Palmetto Preservation and Union County Historical Societies, he was instrumental in the restoration projects at Blackstock Battlefield, Cross Keys House and maintaining several family cemeteries, particularly the Quaker Cemetery. As an original organizer, he helped oversee the building of the Cross Keys Fire Department.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Mary Jo B. Sanders and husband, Maxie; 3 sons: Jack F. Burnett, III and wife Tina, Jim Burnett and John Burnett all of Cross Keys; a sister: Pasty B. Allen and husband, Jimmy of Cross Keys; step-daughter: Elaine Sizemore Chitwood of Union and a step-son: Ricky Sizemore and wife Lynne of Roebuck; grandchildren: Kevin Sanders of Gilbert, Lacey Burnett of Union, Jonathan Burnett and wife Meagan of Lowerys, and Jenny Burnett of Union; great-grandchildren: Jada Miller, Jaiden Burnett and Natalie Garner and 2 step-grandchildren: Tyler Sizemore and Kelsey Sizemore both of Roebuck.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00AM Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were: Jason Allen, Jeff Allen, Mike Scales, Ricky Smith, Ruben Gilliam and Billy Lawson. The following were asked to assemble at the church 10:45 AM to form the honorary escort: Commissioners of the Union County soil and water conservation, Union County Historical Society, Mr Burnett’s Sunday School Class, Willie McBeth and Willie Booker.

The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday, July 22, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Geraldine Hawkins Baber, age 77, of 108 Baber Street, Union, wife of the late James Robert “Bob” Baber, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Baber was born in Union, SC., October 7, 1935, a daughter of the late William A. And Laura Galloway Hawkins. She retired from Milliken and Company-Monarch plant after 29 Years of service.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Kay Youngblood and husband Bean and a son, James L. Baber both of Monarch; Grandchildren: Christi L. Tweed and husband Jeff of Jonesville, Melissa Womick of Spartanburg and Ashley Weber and husband Mark of Simpsonville; great-grandchildren: Garrett Tweed and Presley Tweed both of Jonesville.

Mrs. Baber was predeceased by 5 sisters: Mary Foster, Helen Johnson, Margaret Sailors, Betty Davis and Dorothy Alma Hawkins; 2 brothers: William “Bill” Hawkins and Horace Hawkins.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Gonzalee Childers.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Barbara P. Hord

Mrs. Barbara Parks Hord, age 75, wife of the late Rev. James Hord, formally of 1001 West Main Street, Union, SC., passed away peacefully Saturday, July 20, 2013 in North Augusta at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Hord was born in Union, SC., December 16, 1937, a daughter of the late Horace Parks and Evelyn Adams Parks. A graduate of Union High School she recieved her degree in Christian Education from Asbury College. She was a retired Christian Missionary with World Gospel Missions where she worked along side her husband. She enjoyed cooking and catering for her family, friends and neighbors. Mrs. Hord was a Lifelong member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, a member of the Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class, Eugenia Smith Circle and the church choir. For a number of years she served as a delegate to the annual conference of South Carolina Methodist Church. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and an avid gardener. a graduate of Union High School and Asbury College with a degree in Christian Education.

Mrs. Hord is survived by 2 daughters, Amy H. Leonhardt and husband Mike of North Augusta and Lisa H. Layton husband Jamie of Southbury, CT; a daughter-in-law: Aileen M. Hord of Boiling Green, VA. 6 grandchildren: Jared Leonhardt, Libby Leonhardt, Taryn L. Urane, Kyle Layton, Mike Hord and Robbie Hord. She was predeceased by a son: James A. “Jimmy” Hord, Jr. and a brother: Keith Parks.

Services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, July 22, 2013 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be: George Parks, Hunter Parks, Kyle Layton, Jared Leonhardt, Mike Hord and Robbie Hord. Members of the church choir and Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Leo B. Henderson, Jr., age 87, loving husband of Norma Vaughn Henderson, of 1400 West Main Street, Union, died unexpectedly, Thursday, July 18, 2013.

Mr. Henderson was born in Union, SC on September 24, 1925 a son of the late Leo B. Henderson, Sr. and Viola Adams Henderson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Henderson was retired from Conso Products Company and was a member of New Life Baptist Church where he had served as a church deacon, greeter, usher, and tape ministry volunteer.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Michael Henderson of the home; two daughters, Teresa H. Penland and husband Ronnie and Pam H. Elliot and husband Stanley both of Union; one grandson, Shane Henderson and wife Jesse of Surfside Beach, SC; two great granddaughters, Summer Owens of Union and Savannah Henderson of Surfside Beach, SC; three step grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren; one brother, Bobby Gene Henderson and wife Juliene of Jonesville and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Lois Inman and 4 brothers, Vernon, Floyd, Paul, and Lewis Arthur Henderson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, July 20, 2013 at New Life Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Rev. Ron Culbertson. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

John Avery Gilchrist

Mr. John Avery Gilchrist, age 44, of 2251 Thompson Quarters Road, Sharon, went to be with the lord, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his home.
Mr. Gilchrist was born January 9, 1969, a son of Della Camron Gilchrist and the late James F. Gilchrist. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and attended Winthrop University. Mr. Gilchrist was employed with Lockhart Power Company for 18 years as a hydro electric operator.
 He was a member of Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church, PCA where he was an Elder, a deacon, supervisor of the cemetery and a member of the Annual Antique Tractor Show committee. Mr. Gilchrist was also a member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge #244 and was a past Master.

Surviving in addition to his mother are; a brother, Tim Gilchrist and wife Debbie of Sharon; a sister Barbara White and husband Earl of Sharon; a special nephew, Jimmy Gilchrist and wife Carla; two special nieces, Rebecca Gilchrist and Rachel Gilchrist and fiancee Mathew Trent; two nephews, Christopher and Adam White; special friends, Susan Greer and son Wesley.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 2:30 PM at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by Pastor Craig Marshall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:30 PM in the Church Sanctuary prior to the services.

Patricia A.  "Pat" Kingsmore

Patricia A. Kingsmore, 71, a native of Union, South Carolina, and Poquoson, VA resident for 29 years, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 15, 2013. She was a devoted Air Force wife and homemaker, and “loved to cook for & serve others her food.” Pat was a member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, Yorktown, and an honorary member of the Poquoson Kiwanis Club.

Pat was predeceased in death by her parents, S. Edward Jr. & Helen Holcombe Austin. She was the cherished wife of Ken for 52 years, who survives her. Also surviving is one son, Scott Kingsmore of Lexington, SC; a brother, S. “Ted” Austin, Jr. (Mary Jo) of Chickamauga, GA; a sister, Elizabeth Miller (Lamar A.) Of Jonesboro, GA; a granddaughter Brittany Vittone of Great Lakes, IL; ten nieces & nephews; nine great-nieces & nephews; and three great-great-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6-7:00PM, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, immediately followed by a Celebration of Pat’s life at the church at 7:15PM by Dr. Michael T. Condrey. An additional Celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 20 at 3:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Keith Morrison. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Little was born at the Little Family Home, Jonesville, South Carolina October 23,1927. He was one of the six children of the late Robert Cleveland and Myrtle Gault Little. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School, Wofford College, and received his Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. He did further graduate work at Furman University, Converse College, Marshall College and Western Carolina University for an Educational Specialist Degree.

He served as a teacher and Principal at St. George High-School, St. George, South Carolina 1948-1956, and at Jonesville High School 1962-1982.

He was married to Florence Edelyn Rogan Little of Greeleyville, South Carolina and was the father and father-in-law of three children, Edelyn Little Moore and the late Donnie Moore Jr., Eugenia Little Taylor and Bruce Taylor and Susan Little Scales and Mike Scales. He was the dearly loved Grandfather of Carrie Moore, Stacey Taylor, Rev. Emily Scales Sutton and Marc Sutton and Matthew Scales and Dr. Kristi Ford Scales. He was also blessed with a great-grandson Wylie Matthew Scales.

His activities included service as President of the Pre-Chemical Society and Business Manager of the College Yearbook at Wofford. While in St. George he was the teacher of the Young Adult Class of St. George United Methodist Church and Secretary of the Jaycees. He sponsored the first annual published at St. George High School. He was a member of the Official Board and teacher of the Adult Sunday School class of the Harleyville United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Ruritan Club and served as President of the Dorchester County Education Association.

Since returning to Jonesville in 1962, he has served as President of the Union County Education Association, delegate to the National Education Association, member of the Higher Education Commission for the University of South Carolina-Union and a member of the United Fund Board. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of Conference II, Class A, South Carolina High School League and was Treasurer of the Jonesville Ruritan Club. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church where he served in numerous capacities including Church School Superintendent, Teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, President of Methodist Men’s Club, Church Treasurer, Trustee and Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

As a volunteer for the Retiree’s Assistance Program of the Insurance Division of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board, he helped many retirees with insurance problems and was recognized by the state as an outstanding volunteer in 1996. He was always interested in helping others by being of service in any way that he could to those in his church, family and the community at large.

A member of the Daniel Morgan Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, he had served as a genealogist for the chapter. He is a descendent of Jonas Little and John Palmer of Union County, both of who served in the American Revolution.

Funeral Services for Mr. Little will be held at 6:30 PM Friday, July 19, 2013 at New Hope United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service in the church fellowship.

Mr. Christie Allen “Al” Christiansen, 87, of Virginia Beach, VA, died June 29, 2013 at the Lake Taylor Transitional Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Al was born May 22, 1926 in New York, NY, a son of the late Lt.Cdr. (US Coast Guard) Christie Thomas Christiansen and Ellen Olda Danielson Christiansen. He was a member of Emanual Lutheran Church and had previously lived in both New Orleans, LA and Savannah, GA.

He is survived by his brother, Thomas Edward Christiansen and wife Joann; sisters, Rachael C. Cartwright, Alma C. O’Shields, and Ellen C. Taylor and husband Robert. Also surviving are nephews, Andrew Cartwright, Carson Cartwright, Chris and Phillip Christiansen, Jiggs O’Shields, Billy Taylor, Robert T. Taylor, Jr., and nieces, Melinda Davis and Laura Taylor; and his best friend, Vernon Piland.

Funeral services were held July 2, 2013 at the Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veteran Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia

Susie B. Palmer

Mrs. Susie Black Palmer, age 90, resident of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Union, passed away, Monday, July 15, 2013.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Union, July 28, 1922, a daughter of the late Sam R. Black and Belle Knox Black.  She was formerly married to the late Henry Palmer, Sr.  Mrs. Palmer was an active member of Fairforest Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, served on the Hostess Committee and the Benevolence Committee, and was active with Vacation Bible School.  She enjoyed organizing and participating in the Nursing Home Ministry of the church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary P. Gossett and Judy P. Parris; two sons, Ed Palmer and wife Barbara and Gene Palmer and wife Robin all of Union; a step-son, Henry Palmer, Jr. and wife Gayle also of Union; three sisters, Nancy Black, Lorene Black and Helen Meredith all of Chester; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.   Mrs. Palmer was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Blue Ridge Hospice for their care of Mrs. Palmer.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory and Rev. Tim Driggers.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers, Wayne Palmer, Clay Palmer, Bobby Gene Palmer, William L. Carter, Spence Palmer and Brad Palmer.  Members of Mrs. Palmers Sunday School class are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Wednesday prior to the services at the church.

Mrs. Laura Keller Perrin, age 94, widow of Clarke Wardlaw Perrin of Union, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Laurens County Hospital.

Born March, 21, 1919 in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth Wharton Keller. Mrs. Perrin was a graduate of Converse College and then taught school in Florence, SC. She was the secretary of First Presbyterian Church, Union for a while, then became a long time employee of Vocational Rehabilitation of Union County Schools.

“Miss Laura” was a gardener, bread baker and an artist, and she enjoyed sharing her many talents with family and friends. Mrs Perrin was an active member of First Presbyterian Church until moving to the Presbyterian Home in Clinton.

She is survived by her two daughters, Georgia Anne Perrin of Spartanburg and Robin Perrin Brown and husband , CAPT C.L. Brown, USN (ret) of Georgetown; two grandsons, David C. Brown and Robert P. Brown; and a brother, Dr. Thomas F. Keller. Mrs. Perrin was predeceased by two brothers, John Wharton Keller and Marvin Keller.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Keith Morrison. Burial will be in the old Presbyterian Cemetery.

Mr. Larkin N. “Bud” Burgess, age 81, husband of Lula Mae “Toots” Turner Burgess of 152 Sprouse Rd., Jonesville, SC went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Larkin was born in Union County, SC March 30, 1932, a son of the late Arthur V. Burgess and Ida Stines Burgess. He was owner and operator of Larkin Burgess Used Trucks. Larkin was an active member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He has served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, choir member and served on the cemetery committee in various churches and was also a Mason. Larkin loved his Lord and was loving and devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-two years are a daughter, Vicki B. Addis and husband Brent; two sons: Dennis Burgess and Mike Burgess and wife Gigi all of Jonesville; a granddaughter, Sarah Burgess; grandsons: Ray Burgess and wife Kelli, Blaine Addis and wife Amber, Daniel Burgess and wife Ashley and Chris Burgess and wife Jennifer; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Horne and Marcella Smith and husband Ike; a brother, Bruce Burgess and wife Peggy; a mother-in-law, Pauline F. Turner; a sister-in-law, Brenda Brown; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Teague and a special adopted family, Clarence and Dale Cook and their children Chris, Matt and Bruce. Larkin was predeceased by two sisters, Blanch Palmer and Vivian Owens, two brothers: Howard Burgess, Sr and L.J. Burgess; a grandson, Matthew Brent Addis and a great-grandson, Andrew Brent Addis.

A celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00 PM Monday, July 15, 2013 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Harold Ray Varner, age 65, husband of Marlene Quinn Varner of 272 Pineland Rd., Union, died Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Varner was born January 24, 1948  in Union, SC., a son of the late Paul Varner and Mary Manley Varner.  He was a graduate of Union High School and employed at Webb Forging for nineteen years. A former member of the South Carolina National Guards, Mr. Varner was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed spending time at Lake Greenwood; fishing with friends and singing karoke.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Scott Varner of Union and Michael Varner of Buffalo; a step daughter: Melissa Jarrett and friend, John Sousa of Buffalo; grandchildren: Tyler Gregory and wife, Stacey and Emma Jarrett; great-grandchildren: Cliff Gregory and Ariel Gregory; a sister: Barbara Ramsey and husband Steve of Buffalo; three brothers: David Varner and wife Sheila, Bob Varner and wife Cathy and Ray Varner and wife Jerri all of Buffalo; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hazel A. Cudd, age 71, wife of Buddy John Cudd, S.R., of 1238 South Jonesville Hwy., Jonesville, S.C., went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Cudd was born in Union, SC., October 26, 1941, a daughter of the late James “Jim” Austin and Sarah McManuss Austin. She was a graduate of Union High School, The University of South Carolina-Union and Greenville Technical College. Mrs. Cudd worked at Austin Rehabilitation as a physical therapist assistant and a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cudd was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

 Surviving are two daughters, Penny C. Epps and husband Audie of Union, and Amy C. Mr. Lawrence Worthley “Pa” Burgess, age 85, of 1080 Meadow Wood Rd., Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 9, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife of 63 years, Livia Price Burgess.

He was born in Cherokee Co., April 30, 1928, a son of the late Forrest and Emeline Self Burgess. Mr. Burgess was a long time farmer and had retired from Torrington Co. Tyger River Plant and was formerly employed with Milliken Co., Monarch Plant. He was a faithful member of Putman Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and served in various leadership positions within the church. Pa lived most of his life in the Meadow Woods community where his greatest joy was his church, his farm, camping and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Kay Ratliff and husband Russ, Judy Mathis and husband Rick and Nancy B. Heatherly all of Buffalo; one sister, Evelyn B. Lawson of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; Stacey Ratliff, Lance Ratliff, Ashley Ratliff, Shane Mathis (Lara), Emmi Vanderford (Robbie), Michelle McCowan (Scott), Christy Beheler (Mike), April Hicks (Chris) and Wayne Heatherly; twelve great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kyle Boineau, Kaleight and Lindsey Ratliff, Larissa, Levi and Luke Mathis, Taylor and Carson McCowan, Candice Beheler, Jackson Hicks, and Chase Heatherly. Mrs. Smith was born in Union, August 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Adam B. Vinson and Josie Racine Alred Vinson.  She retired from Boyd Management as a property manager and attended Lakeside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a two daughters, Tammy S. Cannon and husband Danny and Donna L. Smith all of Union; a sister, Jewel Vinson Lee of Union; three grandchildren, Benji Tucker, Jr., Booke Crawford and husband Phillip and Kyle Smith and wife Brooke; six great-grandchildren, Cale Crawford, Luke Crawford, Kynlee Smith, Taegan Bishop, Jaelyn Davis and Aubrie Tucker; a special aunt, Loretta Sanders and several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Carla Elliott and husband Neal. Mr. Grady Keith Rogers, age 53, of 805 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., formerly of Spartanburg, passed away suddenly, July 4, 2013.

Mr. Rogers was born in Spartanburg, October 23, 1959, a son of the late Chubb and Eleanor Barrett Rogers. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and a former construction worker.

Surviving are a daughter, Shanna Williams; a son, Brandon Rogers both of Union; two sisters, Denise Holmes of Texas and Pat Smith of Spartanburg; two brothers, Jeff Rogers and Pat Smith both of Spartanburg; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Marion A. Williams, age 78 of 121 James Street, Spartanburg, SC passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Williams was born in Spartanburg SC February 6, 1935, a son of the late A. M. Williams and Emma Alverson Williams. He was a graduate of Union High School and  was a retired business owner and operator of Jud-Mar Homes of Spartanburg. Mr. Williams was a member of Anderson Mill Baptist Church; was a Veteran of the US Army and had served with the South Carolina National Guard-Union Unit. He was also a Shriner and a Mason.

Mrs. Gault was born in Union, SC April 23, 1943, a daughter of Eva Randall Harris of Union and the late Joseph Moody Harris. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken & Co. Mrs. Gault was a member of McCutchon Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Helen Hamilton Hope, wife of the late Dr. Harold Pagan Hope, Sr., passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 at her home in Union, SC.

Mrs. Hope was born on January 4, 1912 in Spartanburg, SC, the daughter of Dr. Fred Parham Hamilton and Mattie Louise Littlejohn Hamilton. She was educated in the Spartanburg School system, graduated from Winthrop College and taught in the Union County Schools. Mrs. Hope was active in First Presbyterian Church and her community throughout her life.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Harold P. Hope, Jr. and wife Jane of Charlotte, NC, Robert Hope and wife Nancy of Union, and son-in-law, Dr. Charles Jordan of Florence, SC. Mrs. Hope is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Harold Hope III and wife Kate, Dr. William Witherspoon Hope and wife Caroline, Dr. Nancy Hope Goodbar and husband Neal, Robert Hope Jr., and wife Rebecca, David Hope, Charles Jordan and wife Jenny, Robert Jordan and wife Stephanie, and Helen Jordan Campbell and husband Pierce. Also surviving are her thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hope was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Hope Jordan, and two brothers, Kenneth Littlejohn Hamilton and Frank Moultrie Hamilton.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Union, SC conducted by Rev. Keith Morrison and her nephew, Chaplain Frank Moultrie Hamilton. Grandsons will serves as active pallbearers.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the love and care given by Annette Phillips, Lorinda Robins, Judy McLain, Linda Bobo, Corrie Sartor and Tommi Allred, throughout Mrs. Hope’s illness.

Doris Jean Gault Johnson

Mrs. Doris Jean Gault Johnson, age 81, widow of Robert Malcolm “Buddy” Johnson, Jr., passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Union, January 20, 1932 a daughter of the late Herbert and Lillie Mae Gault Gault. She was retired from Conso Products and was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Faith Circle and the Mary Lybrand Sunday School class of Duncan Acres. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Varner of the home; special nieces, Cetora Kerr and Marie Knox of Union and a special nephew, Graham Gault of Union along with many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by six sisters, Pauline Foster, Virl Bentley, Dorothy Lipsey, Ruby Gault, Margaret Haney and Phyllis Abrams; and six brothers, Cecil Gault, Albert Gault, William Gault, Russell Gault, John Daniel “J.D” Gault, and Paul Dean “Nennie” Gault.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Toney Gault, Robert Bentley, Bennie Ray Hilderbrand, Frankie Greer, Willard “Snowball” Hucks and James Owenby.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hazel Vaughan Moore, age 87, widow of Edward Moore of 2680 Lockhart Hwy., Union, passed away July 3, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Moore was born in Union, March 31, 1926 a daughter of the late Charles D. “Duck” Vaughan and Bessie Lawson Vaughan. Mrs. Moore was a homemaker and a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy M. Boulware and husband Howard of Union; a son, Dennis E. Moore of Columbia; 4 grandchildren, Michael Tyler and wife Mindy of Jonesville, Mitchell Tyler and wife Erika of James Island, and Mark Boulware of Union andKaren B. Roberson and husband Steve of High Point, NC; 4 great-grandchildren, Cody Boulware, Camryn Tyler, Conner Tyler and Matthew Roberson; and a brother, Charles Vaughan of Whitmire. Mrs. Moore was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Davis, two brothers, Jake Vaughan and Paul Vaughan and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Babb Moore.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Greg Barefoot and Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Tyler, Mitchell Tyler, Mark Boulware, Steve Roberson, Cody Boulware and Conner Tyler. Members of Oakmont Singers are asked to sit in a group.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 2:45 PM Saturday prior to the services at the church.

Mr. Ted Arthur Little, age 70 of 2319 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Little was born in Pea Ridge, March 25, 1943, a son of the late William and Daisy Proctor Little. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and formerly employed with Kohler Products. Mr. Little was a former member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Billy Little of Union; a brother, Roy Little and wife Brenda of Jonesville; his former wife, Edna Ruth Little of Gaffney; two step-sons, Jeff Harris and wife Elizabeth, and Billy Wayne Harris all of Gaffney; a step-daughter, Pam Duvall and husband Mike of Gaffney; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Little was predeceased by a brother and his wife, Robert and Kathy Little, a step daughter-in-law, Jane Harris and a grandson, Jason “J-Bo” Osment.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 5, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Alan West. Visitation will be held in the church following the graveside services.

Active pallbearers will be Willard Farr, Matt Farr, Tony Farr, Jeff Harris, Billy Wayne Harris, Freddie Bowie, Randy Gregory and Shawn “Boney” Haney.

Mr. Little will be carried Friday morning to the home of his brother, Roy and Brenda Little, 1046 Jonesville-Lockhart Hwy., Union, where the family will receive friends.

Johnnie Ruth Faulks

Mrs. Johnnie Ruth Faulks, age 77, wife of Walter Faulks, Jr of 112 Poinsette Street, Union, SC passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Faulks was born in Union, SC September 17, 1935, a daughter of the late Roy Austin and Alice Mae Peahuff Austin. She retired from Milliken & Co-Monarch Plant and was a member of Union Church of God. Mrs. Faulks was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Marie English and husband Joey of Union; two sons: David Faulks and wife Lisa of Union and Joey Faulks and friend Brandy Russell of the home; two sisters: Lois Grant of Union and Nellie Alexander of Woodruff; a brother, Russell Austin of Union; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and special caregivers, Michael Crowder of the home and Beverly Jennings of Union.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Dr. Aubrey Calvert.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 103B Boyce Street, Union, SC 29379.
