Ruth O. Crocker
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Ruth O’Shields Crocker, widow of Arthur W. Crocker, Jr., of 801 E. Main St., Union, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Crocker was born in Union, a daughter of the late William Berry O’Shields and Martha (Mattie) Jones O’Shields. She was a graduate of Union High School and Robinson’s Business College in Spartanburg. Mrs. Crocker began her career working as the first receptionist for WBCU Radio and then worked in the finance department of United Merchants, Union Plant. Later, Mrs. Crocker was co-owner of Economy Office Supply where she retired.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church and a devoted supporter of missionary works both local and abroad. Mrs. Crocker was a talented musician having played piano for the primary department at her church and played for the youth programs at Green Street Methodist Church and West Side Baptist Church. She also was honored and enjoyed to play piano for weddings and revivals.

Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Ann Jones Crocker Carmichael and husband Randy of Walterboro and Jane Elizabeth Crocker of Union; a son, David William Crocker of Landrum; and a granddaughter, Catherine O’Shields Carmichael of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Crocker was predeceased by two sisters, Grace O’Shields and Erlene O’Shields Brady and husband Rev. R.R. Brady.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the First Baptist Church Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Frances Boyd Koger Sanders Holmes
Jonesville, S.C.

Frances “Frankie” Boyd Koger Sanders Holmes, a resident of Jonesville, SC for almost a century, died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the age of 102, at Carmel Hills Retirement Community in Charlotte, NC.

Frankie was born in Charleston, SC on November 10, 1910 to Robert Boyd Koger, Jr. and Alice Easterlin Koger. She moved to Jonesville with her parents and sisters, Josephine and Merle (later Mrs. Frank Berry of Reevesville) when she was ten months old. She loved and called Jonesville “home” for the rest of her life. She was the last surviving member of her birth family.

She was married to Fred Guy Sanders, Sr., from June 1, 1933 until his death on Janruary, 24, 1966, and to Whitman Ben Holmes from November 19, 1970 until his death on April 23, 2006. She was also predeceased by her beloved sons, Francis Boyd Sanders and Fred Guy Sanders, Jr., granddaughter Kim Sanders Ford, and great-great grandchildren, Evan and Lana Ford.

From time to time, Frankie would say that a certian person, for a reason that was special to her, would always have a “special place” in her heart. There were too many there in the end to name all of them, but to name only a few, always close at hand or in treasured memories were friends since childhood, Marjorie Fowler Ammons (“I held her in my arms when she was just a baby. She was my best friend”) and Lois Thompson Foster (“No one loved the Koger family more than Lois, and we loved her.”), as well as Mr. Ruben Lindsay and the brave young 12 year old Menno Smith, Alice’s son, who together rescued her from the deep, dark, narrow and muddy ditch she had accidentally fallen into on the cold winter evening of December 16, 1926.

Frankie also wanted to say: “To everyone who helped me or my family along the way, even with just a kind word or smile, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you.”

Frankie is survived by a son, Ronald Koger Sanders of Arlington, VA; daughter-in-law, Salle’ Sanders of Stanfield, NC; a son, Guy’s Clemson roommate, Willie Archie (“In my heart, he is one of my sons.”) and wife Jackie; cousin, Mary Thomas Bruch (“She’s like a daughter to me.”) and husband Bob; granddaughter, Krystal Beckner and husband Jeff; a grandson, Mitchell Sanders; step-grandson, Ricky Martin; step-granddaughter, Leigh Anne Martin; grandson-in-law, Roger Ford; and other beloved relatives, including great and great-great grandchildren, and treasured friends.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Dr. James Ivey.

In lieu of flowers, the family believes Frankie would be honored by a simple thought of her and any act of kindness to another person, in keeping with the words of her favorite hymn “Others” which she adopted long ago as the motto for her life, or to any living creature, in view of her love and compassion for all living things, especially the dogs and cats she rescued. “Others, Lord, yes others, Let this my motto be. Help me to live for others, that I may live like Thee.”

Shirley M. Stamey
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Shirley Martin Stamey, age 65, wife of Ray W. Stamey of 569-1 Timberlake Rd., Union, passed away, Saturday June 29, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stamey was born in Union, Janurary 11, 1948, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucille Greene Martin.  She retired after more than 25 years with Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant and was a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church.  Mrs. Stamey was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Angela Hicks and husband Roy of Union; two sons, Tony Stamey and wife Kimberly of Union and Joey Stamey of Chester; a sister, Dorothy Millwood of Chester; two brothers, Doug Martin and Dean Martin both of Union, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Wilksburg Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Sean Sellars and Rev. Charline Lanier.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Paul McCutcheon, Timmy Martin, Chris Hicks, Randy Nichols, Hunter Jordan, Joe Hicks and Richie Barnes.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Doris Rochester Erwin, age 76 widow of Willie D. Erwin of 465 Eaves Rd., Whitmire, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Erwin was born in Union, February 1, 1937, a daughter of the late Haskell and Ollie Hutcherson Rochester.  She was a homemaker and formerly had worked in retail sales.  Mrs. Erwin was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia LaForme and husband Bert of Chesnee, four sons, Jerry Erwin and wife Sadie of Whitmire, Danny Erwin and wife Kathy of Union, David Erwin and wife Terri of Laurens and Billy Erwin of Pacolet; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Chaplain Dennis Spencer and Rev. Robert Branch.  Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Erwin, Jeff Erwin, Michael Erwin, Pat Johnston, Johnny Reynolds, William Wilson, Christopher Todd and Corey West.  Staff and nurses of Medi-Home Hospice are asked to sit in a group. Mr. James Larry “Bo” Matthews, Jr, age 37 of 200 Blackwell Rd., Inman, SC passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Matthews was born in Spartanburg, SC August 26, 1975, a son of James Larry Mathews, Sr of Union and Phyllis Tynor Smith Matthews of Inman. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother and father are his wife, Jessica Bailey Matthews; a step-mother, Jean Matthews of Union; a daughter, Morah; two sons: James and Jeremy all of Inman; a sister, Amy Cromer of Union; two brothers: Tim Matthews of Lyman and Mike Bush of Duncan; a mother-in-law, “Ma” Penny of Inman; maternal grandfather, Harold Smith of Spartanburg and a special friend, Daniel Henderson of Inman.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, June 28, 2013 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Rev. Michael Henderson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 6:00 PM Saturday evening at his home, 200 Blackwell Rd., Inman.

Martha Karen Gregory

Ms. Martha Karen Gregory, of 680 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, passed away suddenly, Monday, June 24, 2013 at her home.

Ms. Gregory was born in Columbia, SC a daughter of Shirllene Meggs Gregory of Union and the late Harold Thomas Gregory. A graduate of Lockhart High School and Spartanburg Technical College, she was a Registered Nurse. Ms. Gregory was employed with Wallace Thomson Hospital as an Intensive Care nurse for over 20 years. She attended Lockhart United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a sister, Mary Shue and husband Don of Concord, NC; a brother Richard Gregory of Lockhart; three nephews, Ben and Nick Shue of Concord, NC, and Patrick Gregory of Florence, SC she loved these boys like they were her own, one of her greatest joys was being their “MyMy.” Also surviving are her Uncle Joe Meggs and wife Dot of Jonesboro, GA. Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by one brother, Tom Gregory.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 28, 2013, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Donna Eidson. Visitation will be held immediately following the services at the cemetery.

Mrs. Catherine L. Smart Wright, age 86, widow of James Cecil “Red” Wright of 440 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

Mrs. Wright was born in Forest City, NC, March 8, 1927, a daughter of the late Martin and Frannie Bell Tessinar Smart. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant. Mrs. Wright was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for the first and second graders.

Surviving are a daughter, Sherin Adair and husband Elbert of Forest City, NC; four grandchildren, Jeff Wright of Union, Bryan Adair and wife Tracy of Boiling Springs, Ben Adair and wife Jennifer of Lexington, NC, and Brad Adair and wife Leslie of Tryon, NC; and 9 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wright predeceased by a daughter, Charlene Chastain, two sons, James Dennis Wright and Charles Grason Wright and two grandsons, David Grason Barrett and Timothy Randolph Barrett.

Mrs. Annie Mae Whitlock Waldrop, age 94, widow of Ralph Waldrop of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Waldrop was born in Whitmire, October 28, 1918, a daughter of the late William Jackson Whitlock and Lillie Stone Whitlock.  She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Waldrop was the last surviving member of six sisters and one brother.

Surviving are two daughters, Doris Jolly and husband C.B. of Union and Faye Eaves and husband Bobby of Greer; one son, Roger Waldrop and wife Faye of Woodruff; six grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Hebron Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brian Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Brent Wilson DuPre
Jonesville, SC

Mr. Brent Wilson DuPre, age 58 of 304 Harris Street, Jonesville, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. DuPre was born in Union, SC February 25, 1955, a son of Dorothy Burgess DuPree of Jonesville and the late James Henry DuPree. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School, Spartanburg Technical College and was attending Believer’s Institute for Biblical Studies. He was a member of Morningstar Baptist Church in Pacolet where he was a member of the choir, the Young at Heart’s and the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the World’s Missions Body. Mr. DuPre was a former Paramedic.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Joye Malone DuPre of Kings Mt., NC; a daughter, Courtney DuPre Robles and husband Clemente of Greenville; two sons: Kieran Daniel DuPre of Weaverville, NC and Lance Craig DuPre of Columbia; two grandchildren: Jasmine Wall and Ophelia DuPre of Weaverville, NC and two brothers: Rick DuPree and wife Sherri of Pea Ridge and Chris DuPree and girlfriend Susan Kaminski of Spartanburg.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Andrew Carrigan and Rev. Shannon Faulkner. Burial will be at Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Frances Crumley Kimbro age 79 of 131 Park Drive, Jonesville, SC passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at her home. Mrs. Kimbro was formerly of Carlisle and was the widow of Billy Ray Kimbro.

Mrs. Kimbro was born in Georgia November 30, 1933, a daughter of the late William Nelson Crumley and Nora Taylor Crumley. She retired from Springs Mills in Lancaster and she and her husband were previously owners and operators of Kimbro’s Grocery in Carlisle. Mrs. Kimbro was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church and was a loving mother and Na-Na to all children.

Surviving are two daughters: Judy Yount and husband Ronnie of Union and Robin Cremeans and husband John of Jonesville: eight grandchildren: Steven Yount and wife Tyger, Melissa Hancock and husband Jonathan, Vicki Glenn and husband Mike, Deborah Henderson and husband Tim, John G. Cremeans and wife Candy, Coco Cohen, Peaches Cohen and TyRonn Cohen; eight great-grandchildren: Ella Yount, Lillie Hancock, Sarah Glenn, Sam Glenn, Blaine Gonzalez, Tucker Henderson, Hannah Cremeans and Amelia Cremeans; two great-grandchildren: Andrew Gonzalez and Max Gonzalez; a special sister, Ruby “Cootie” Jones of Spartanburg and three other sisters, Mary Ruth Smith of Lula, Ga, Ethel Tucker of Laurens and Montene Wylie of Chester; three brothers: William Crumley of AK, Charles Crumley of Whitmire and Steve Crumley of Union. Bruce Brasington

Mr. Robert Bruce Brasington, age 62, husband of Sandra Chastain Brasington, of 1429 Meansville Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family, Monday June 24, 2013 following a 16 month battle with brain cancer.

Mr. Brasington was born in Union, January 12, 1951, a son of Frances Mitchell Brasington of Union and the late Malcolm R. “Mickey” Brasington. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended the University of South Carolina and Lander University. Mr. Brasington was employed with INA-USA, Spartanburg and was an active member of Fairforest Baptist Church.

He served his church as a Deacon, former bus driver for church activities, and a member of the choir. Mr. Brasington was a leader in the Royal Ambassadors for several years and had served as Brotherhood director. He worked with Carpenter’s for Christ having traveled on mission trips to Germany, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mr. Brasington was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 33 years are a daughter, Melissa Brasington Cardwell and husband Eric of Union; two granddaughters, Mallori Cardwell and Molli Cardwell; a brother, Mitch Brasington and wife Peggy of Eagle, CO; his in-laws, Carlton and Mary Jane Chastain of Union and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory, Mr. Michael Cohen, and Rev. Robert Scott. Burial will be at Union, Memorial Gardens.

Charles Herbert Gibson

Charles Herbert Gibson peacefully passed into eternal rest June 22, 2013 at the East Cooper Hospital in Mount Pleasant, SC. surrounded by his loving family in whom he took great pride over the many years of his life. He was 89 years of age and would have been 90 years of age in July. He loved and is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 70 years, Marian Alexander Gibson. Both he and Marian grew up in Lockhart, South Carolina and finished high school there. He is predeceased by his father John B. Gibson, his mother Sallie Howell Gibson and 9 brothers and sisters.

Herbert or “Herb”, as his friends called him, was a World War II Veteran and took great pride in having served our country in the U. S. Navy for 4 years during wartime as part of what has been described as the “greatest generation”. His wartime service found him serving as a signalman aboard a destroyer escort in the early years in the European theatre after his voluntary enlistment and later aboard the U.S.S. Midway, an aircraft carrier just prior to his discharge. It was shortly after his voluntary war time enlistment in the U.S. Navy in 1942 that he married his childhood sweetheart “Marian” whom he dedicated himself to for the remainder of his life.

Following World War II Herbert worked with the Life of Virginia Insurance Company for 37 years. Though dedicated to his vocation, he and his wife Marian were faithful and active members of the Lockhart First Baptist Church for many years where he served for a lengthy period of time on the Board of Deacons, as a Sunday School teacher, as a member of the church choir, and as a leader with the Royal Ambassadors. His singular Christian faith, dedication, loyalty, honesty and hard work over the years served as the cornerstone of his life. These traits were the anchor of his life and served as a beacon not only for his life but for those of his immediate family as well, especially his two sons who loved him dearly. His strong, positive, character traits survive him and are an inevitable part, however great or small, embedded within the hearts and lives of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His legacy is celebrated, embraced and received by his surviving sons, Stan F. Gibson and Don C. Gibson, both of whom reside with their wives, Glenda and Mary, respectively, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

For most of his senior years Herbert and Marian have been members of the Philippi Baptist Church located in their home community where they resided many years before moving to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to be close to their family. He often spoke of the warmth, love and support of the wonderful people of their church family at Philippi. For this love and care the family is and shall remain forever grateful.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 25, 2013 at Philippi Baptist Church, located 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, SC., with internment services to follow immediately thereafter in the church cemetery. Afterwards, the family will receive visitors, friends and loved ones in the Church Fellowship Hall for visitation and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the general fund of Philippi Baptist Church.

Emory C. Hornsby
Union, SC

Mr. Emory “Bud” Hornsby, age 72, husband of Ann Bells Hornsby of 3472 Lockhart Hwy., Union, died Saturday, June 22, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Hornsby was born in Besoco, West Virginia December 31, 1940, a son of the late Owen Pete Hornsby and Clara Bolen Hornsby. He was a graduate of Stoco High School in Coal City West Virginia and retired from the South Carolina Army National Guard. Mr. Hornsby was a member of the Church of God and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Andrea Hornsby Kirchner and husband, Karl of Spartanburg; a son, Charles Hornsby and wife Juanita of Spartanburg; two sisters, Drema Nelson and Gale Dunford and husband Ernest all of West Virginia; two brothers, Ed Hornsby and wife Walley and Jim Hornsby and wife Peggy all of Virginia; three grandchildren: Kristin Kirchner of Spartanburg, Tyler Hornsby of West Virginia and Alleigha “Gabby” Hornsby of the home. Mr. Hornsby was predeceased by a brother, Trace Hornsby.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Browns Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. John Lee. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Clyde Anthony Murchison, Jr.

Born August 9, 1922, Clyde Anthony Murchison, Jr. began his new life in Heaven on June 21, 2013. He was welcomed there by his parents, Clyde Anthony Murchison, Sr. and Sallie Cox Murchison, his beloved wife Ann Holloway Murchison and his son, George Holloway Murchison.

He is survived by his children, Clyde Anthony Murchison, III, Margaret Murchison Fitz and Thomas Edmunds Fitz, Jr. The lives he has touched the most are his surviving grandchildren, Morgan Fitz McDonald and Brent Alan McDonald, Anne Roddey Fitz Templeton and William Shane Templeton, Sarah Margaret “Meg” Fitz Griffith and Robert Benjamin Griffith, Leslie Claire Murchison, and Lauren Holloway Murchison, and his great-grandchildren Thomas Whitaker McDonald, Della Kathryn McDonald and Madison Grace Templeton. Also surviving are his sister, Sarah Alice Murchison Mathis and Archie Madison Mathis, and their children.

Mr. Murchison received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering, from Clemson University, as a member of the class of 1944. He marched in the Clemson Band and helped initiate the Tiger Rag as the official fight song. During his time at the University, he served our country in World War II. He was a 1st Lt. L Co. 272nd Infantry Regiment who fought in the 69th Division. He deployed into the European Theatre of Operations and served as Platoon Leader and Company Commander. Post graduation, he remained an active member of the Clemson Alumni Association because of the deep impact his brothers in uniform made on his life.

He worked for Milliken and Company for 39 years as an Industrial Engineering Director. He moved with his family to Union, SC, in the late 1950s. He was active in the community, serving on several boards including: Union Day School Board of Trustees, Union County Health Care Foundation Board of Trustees, and Spartanburg Area Mental Health Board of Trustees.

His life was lived with a joy that encouraged all in his path. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Union, SC, he served as a life deacon, Chairman of the Finance Committee and was a fervent supporter of singing his favorite hymns throughout the day. He was a founding member of Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Mr. and Mrs. Murchison also coordinated several domestic and foreign Lay Renewal activities of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

Mr. and Mrs. Murchison’s favorite personal haven was in Beech Mountain, NC and they cherished the time spent there with family and friends. He found rejuvenation in hiking off the path and “talking trash”. Their connection with Mount Calvary Baptist Church served as a spiritual retreat and place where deep and lasting friendships were made.

His body has left us but his memory will remain forever. In parting, he said to us, “Happy Day. Gone to Heaven. Praising the Lord and waitin’ for y’all.” Yes, Ole’ Pop, Tad, Chief Watley and our favorite Ole’ Soldier, we will meet again. We’ll be practicing our secret handshake until we, “Hang it up,” with you together in Heaven.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Union, SC, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. The family will have special seating arrangements for Clemson’s Class of 1944, the “ROMEO’s” lunch group and for his Sunday School class. The family will receive friends at the front of the sanctuary following the service. Mr. Bobby Eugene Fowler, age 76, husband of Brenda Lee Fowler of 141 Carroll Circle, Pacolet, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Fowler was born in Union Co., February 24, 1937, a son of the late Ernest Boyd Fowler and Bernice Gossett Fowler. He was a dedicated employee with Spartanburg School District Three and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Fowler was a proud member of Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer of the Sunday School Dept., Usher, and was an active member of the Men’s Bible Study and the Montgomery Men’s Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Wayne Eugene Fowler; three sisters, Martha Wells and husband Mitchell, Betty Linder and Ruth Conselyea; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Fowler was predeceased by a son, Keith Earl Fowler, three sisters, Mildred Thompson, Lunette Owens and Mary Gentry, and two brothers, Foster and Boyd Fowler, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kelly G. Snelgrove. Burial will be in Pacolet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Alvin D. Wood, age 71, husband of Jo Parks Wood of 1045 Fairview Circle, Union, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Wood was born in Union, July 23, 1941, a son of the late Thomas and Ruby Eubanks Wood.  He was retired after 41 years as employment supervisor with Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing.  Mr. Wood was faithful member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Melody Lancaster and husband Derrick of Spartanburg and Roxanne Ridings and husband David of Union; a son, Robin Wood of Union; a sister, Sue Millwood; a brother, Charles Wood and wife Bonnie all of Union; five grandchildren including two reared in the home, Jennifer Robinson and husband Nick and Zack Wood all of Union;  along with, Hannah Rodriguez and husband Phillip of Union, Rebeccah Lancaster and Tanner Lancaster both of Spartanburg; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Mason Rodriguez and his devoted pet, Freddie Pancake. Mr. Wood was predeceased by a son, Alvin Wood, Jr.

James Daniel Gault
Jonesville, S.C.

Mr. James Daniel “Danny” Gault, age 62, husband of Sharon Tharp Gault of 2757 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Gault was born in Lockhart, October 9, 1950, a son of the late John Daniel “J.D.” Gault and Mary Ellen Childers Gault. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School, received his BS in Education from USC-Upstate and his Master degree from Converse College. Mr. Gault was employed by the Union County School District as a teacher at Sims Middle School and had coached Girls Varsity Softball at Union Co. High School for a number of years. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he had served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, served on the Pastor-Parrish Relations Committee and was a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Gault was also a member of the S.C. Coaches Association, Coaches Association of Women’s Sports (CAWS), the S.C. Education Association and was a Boy Scout Master.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ian Daniel Gault of the home, and two brothers, Derrell Wayne Gault and wife Robbie of Lockhart and Samuel “Rick” Gault of Inman.

Services celebrating the life of Mr. Gault will be held 11:00 AM Friday, June 21, 2013 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bobby Gene “Q-Ball” Franklin, age 63, 185 Rogers Town Rd., Jonesville, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Franklin was born in Union, October 5, 1949 a son of the late Jim and Lois Sanders Franklin. He was a retired truck driver in the logging industry and was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Viet Nam War. Mr. Franklin was a member of Gilead Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Jami Lingerfelt and husband Tim, and a son, Shane Franklin all of Piedmont; five sisters, Willie Rogers of Union, Jessie Cobb of Easley, Elizabeth Ivester of Jonesville, Donna Boulware of Buffalo and Jimmie Vaughn of Gaffney; one brother, Joe Franklin of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Skilyer, McKenzie, T.J. and Destiny, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Ellie Mae.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Randy Burgess. Burial will be at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

W. Darrell “Bud” Jolly age 80, husband of Mary Orique Jolly of 205 Hillcrest Avenue, Union, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Valley Falls Terrace after an extended illness.

Mr. Jolly was born in Union, SC May 13, 1933, a son of the late Wallace William Jolly and Olive Lucille Croy. He attended Union County Schools and also North Greenville College.

Mr. Jolly was former owner and operator of Jolly’s Carpet. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was also a member of the Union Shrine Club. Mr. Jolly was a Veteran of the US Marine Corp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Terri Lindeman and husband Bill of Atlanta, Ga; a son, Billy Jolly of Atlanta; three grandsons: Matthew Lindeman and wife Ashley, Michael Lindeman and wife Danielle and Christopher Lindeman and wife Julie; three great-grandchildren: Parker, Claire and Anna Kate Lindeman; two brothers: Delano Jolly and wife Sharon of AR and Bill Jolly of NV; a nephew, Greg Leishman of Union and several other nieces and nephews; special family members: Marion and Pam Bailey, Kent and Andrea Walker, Mary Elizabeth Walker, Collin Walker, Brian Bailey, Hunter and Brianna Bailey all of Union and Sergio Souza of Brazil. Mr. Jolly was predeceased by a sister, Charlene Fowler and a brother Olin D. Jolly.

Mr. Cogdill was born in Fairfield Co., October 20, 1940 a son of the late H.R. Cogdill and Marie Hutto Cogdill. He was a graduate of Mt. Zion Institute of Winnsboro and from business college in Columbia. Mr. Cogdill was retired as manager of Kimbrell’s Furniture Co., where he began his career in 1961. He was a former member of the S.C. National Guard and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Deborah Edwards and husband Dean of Spartanburg; a daughter-in-law, Myria Cogdill of Union, widow of Mr. Cogdill’s late son, Michael Ray Cogdill; two sisters, Betty Collins and husband Wilbur of Winnsboro, and Annette Kennington of Columbia; two brothers, Charles Cogdill of Lake Wateree, and William Cogdill of West Columbia; four grandchildren, Jessica Edwards, Colby Edwards, Betsy Robinson and David Sinclair; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Robinson, Nathan Robinson and Amanda Sinclair.

Mr. Charles Vernon Hancock, age 73, devoted husband of Ruth Smith Hancock of 548 Sugar Creek Rd., Buffalo went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 10, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Hancock was born in Union, SC August 18, 1939, a son of the late Dudley Lee Hancock and Willie Mae Mize Hancock. He was a faithful member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and choir member. Mr. Hancock enjoyed singing gospel music, wood working and making others smile. He had served with the South Carolina National Guard - Union Unit and was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills in Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Deborah (Donnie) Crawford of Buffalo; a brother, Thomas “Red” (Peggy) Hancock of Union and a very special sister-in-law, Gloria Jean “Dodie” Smith of the home. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hancock was predeceased by a baby sister, Alta Ruth Hancock.

Mrs. Hortence Hollingsworth Sinclair, age 78, widow of Melvin Sinclair, of 120 Sinclair Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday June 9, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Sinclair was born in Union, January 29, 1935 a daughter of the late Lawrence Cuspert Hollingsworth and Lillian Willard Hollingsworth.  She was retired from Union Co. High School where she worked in the cafeteria and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Lynn Sinclair of Spartanburg and Dennis Grant Sinclair and wife Terry of Greenwood; one brother, Henry Hollingsworth and wife Pat of Union; three grandchildren, Lacy Sinclair of Columbia, Carly Brown and husband Russell of Atlanta, Rev. Brandon Sinclair and wife Shaunda of Greenwood and Nathan Sinclair of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Maci Grace Sinclair.  Mrs. Sinclair was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Arthur B. “AB” Moss, Jr age 90, husband of Helen Irene Stehle Moss of 600 Forest Street, Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 9, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Moss was born in Jonesville SC April 7, 1923, a son of the late Arthur B. Moss, Sr and Belle Crocker Moss. He was retired from the Label Corp. in Jonesville and was formerly employed for forty years with JP Stevens Plant in Jonesville. Mr. Moss was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and was a Veteran of the US Army Air Corps. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-three years are a daughter, Denise Silvey and husband Larry; a son, Arthur Moss, III all of Jonesville; a grandson, Shane Silvey and wife Jessica; a great-grandson, Lucas Silvey and a beloved pet dog, Judy. Mr. Moss was predeceased by brothers, Larry Moss, Bobby Gene Moss, sisters: Mae Holt, Sarah Rector, Dorothy Spencer and Frances Hickland.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Daniel Johnston and Rev. James D. Spencer, III.

Mr. Jackson was born in Georgetown, Washington DC October 11, 1932, a son of the late Wade Jackson and Irene Schaffer Jackson. He retired from Safe Way Bakery and was a Veteran of the US Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Gayle Wright and husband Ronnie of Pauline; two sons: James D. Short, Jr and wife Lisa of Alexanderia, VA and David B. Jackson of Fairfax, VA; a sister, Francis Fletcher; two brothers: Robert Jackson and Paul Jackson all of VA; two grandchildren: Teresa Tucker and husband Dennis of Ottaray and Carolyn Kirby and husband Jerry of Pauline: four great-grandchildren: Scott Wright, Brittany Wright, Grace Kirby and Logan Yarbrough all of Union. Mr. Brown was born in Union, February 28, 1962, a son of the late James Clinton “J.C.” Brown and Virginia Howell Brown. He was employed with Brown’s Roofing Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Jessica Scott and husband Kevin of Union and Shannon Brown and fiancee Kevin Haydock of Pacolet; one son, Billy Brown, Jr. and wife Rochelle of Union; a grandson, Jordan Haydock; two sisters, Teresa Humphries and Elaine Horne both of Union; three brothers, Clifford Brown and wife Betty, Dean Brown and Jerry Brown and wife Sherry all of Union. Mr. Brown was predeceased by a brother, Freddie Brown.

Mr. Barnett was born in the Bogansville community of Union Co., January 20, 1944 a son of the late Homer and Nellie Brewington Barnett.  He was formerly employed with Southern States Packaging.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Arlene Barnett of the home; two sons, Donald Barnett, Jr. and wife Barbara and Shane Barnett both of Buffalo; three sisters, Fay Faircloth and Frances Owens both of CT, and Rose Gureton of Buffalo; four brothers, Paul Barnett of Blacksburg, Jerry Barnett of FL and Johnny Barnett of Clover and Stanley Pollander of Buffalo; five grandchildren, Angel Walden, Aaron Barnett, Misty Barnett, Jacob Barnett and Amber Barnett; five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Alice Ruth Stines Quinn, age 72 of Brittany Manor Apts., Union, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Oakmont Nursing Center.

Mrs. Quinn was born in Union Co., March 22, 1941, a daughter of the late Henry “Porky” Stines and Addie Mildred Martin Stines. She was a member of the Union Church of Christ and was a homemaker. Mrs. Quinn was the widow of Benjamin Issac “Benny” Quinn.

Surviving are a sister, Ida Sparks of North Carolina; special friends, Terry and Tara Hale and their children, Noah Morris and Saskia “Sassy” Hale.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Union Church of Christ conducted by Minister Doug English and Minister Curtis Gilbert. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Jack Turner Garner
Union, S.C.

Mr. Jack Turner Garner, age 55 of 211 City View Circle, Union, passed away at his home Friday, May 31, 2013.

Mr. Garner was born in Union, June 20, 1957 a son of Louise Kelly Garner Cribb of the home and the late Jack G. Garner. He was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of Unity United Methodist Church. Mr. Garner worked in the automobile body repair having worked most recently with Brian’s Body Shop.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a sister: Elizabeth “Libby” G. Allison; his wife, Teresa Allison Garner both of Union and several aunts, uncles, cousins and very close friends.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

The family will be at the home, 211 City View Circle, Union, where they will receive friends.

Wilbur F. Smith, Jr.
Union, S.C.

Wilbur Frasier Smith, Jr., of Santuck, beloved husband of June Jeter Smith, died on May 31, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Born December 9, 1918, in Orangeburg, SC, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Wilbur Frasier Smith, Sr., and Blanche Edwins Smith. He graduated from The Citadel, held a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, and did further graduate work at Florida State University.

During World War II, Mr. Smith participated in both the European and Pacific Theaters, where he attained the rank of captain. He was a combat veteran, participating in two major landings and five major battles.

After a career in business, he became a math teacher, an assistant principal, and the guidance director at Union High School. He served as Program Coordinator for the Title III Regional Office Education Development Center in Spartanburg. He continued his career as Director of Special Services and Adult Education in Anderson School District #5 before returning to Union as Superintendent, a position he held from 1971-1984. He served on the Winthrop Consortium of School Superintendents and was a member of the South Carolina Association of School Superintendents. Mr. Smith was appointed to two terms on the State Board of Education and as a member of the Governor’s Committee for Equalization of Educational Finance.

A faithful member of Carlisle Methodist Church, he served as a trustee, board chairman, lay leader and taught Sunday School for many years.

Among his honors were the SC Art Education Association Presidential Award and the Wilbur F. Smith Band Invitational contest at Union High School.

Mr. Smith was a long-time member and former president of the Union Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow. He served on the Board of Directors of the Union County Chamber of Commerce and as Farm Bureau director. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion and the Union County Soil and Water Conservation.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 66 years, June Jeter Smith, a daughter, Susan Jeter Smith White (Thomas), a son, Wilbur Frasier Smith, III (Carol), two grandsons, Ryan Frasier Smith (Abigail) and Martin Allen Smith (Laura Lee), three great-grandchildren, a sister, Loulie Smith Paul of Austin, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Martin Calhoun Smith.

Visitation will be held at the Holcombe Funeral Home in Union from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2013. A graveside service will be conducted at the Jeter Cemetery in Santuck, Union County, by the Reverend Amie Shaver and Reverend Carl Harris on Monday, June 3, 2013, at 11:00 a.m.

Active pallbearers will be Robert A. Jeter, Clarence A. Jeter, Manning Thomas Jeter, III, Evans Crocker, Whitney Smith, Barry Smith, Thomas Gelwicks, and Les Brown.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Smith’s memory to Carlisle Methodist Church (P.O. Box 35; Carlisle, SC 29031), the University of South Carolina at Union Scholarship Fund, Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, or to a charity of one’s choice.
