William T. Scales, Sr.

Mr. William T. “Willie” Scales, Sr., age 82, widower of Betty Heatherly Scales of 126 Newport Dr., Union, went home to his Heavenly reward, Wednesday, November 27, 2013.

Mr. Scales was born in Union, June 1, 1931, a son of the late William H. and Marie Estes Scales. He was a 1949 graduate of Union High School where he was a member of the football team, and was a 1957 graduate of the University of South Carolina. Between graduating high school and college, he served four years for his country with the US Air Force.
Mr. Scales retired as Administrative Manager of Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and continued to work a number of years with Holcombe Funeral Home. He was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer, Chairman of the Board and a MYF Leader. Mr. Scales served his community as a past President of the Union Co. Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Union Co. United Way and had also been one of the original founding Board Members of Union Academy. He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge , a Mason and remained a devoted Gamecock fan.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol S. Whitener and husband Allen; a son, William T. “Billy” Scales, Jr. and wife Michelle all of Union; two granddaughters, Kristin Caroline Whitener and Savannah Marie Scales. Mr. Scales was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn S. McCullough.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 29, 2013 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial with Military Honors will be a Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Gerald “Junebug” Alman, Joey Nichols, Robbie Littlejohn, Benjy Brown, John Nave and Paul Hennessey.

Visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Friday prior to the services.

Stobo Clifton West

Mr. Stobo Clifton West, age 84, husband of Dorothy Lovingood West of 971 Philippi Church Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at his home.

Mr. West was born in Union, September 15, 1929, a son of the late Luther Bailey West and Lillian Alexander West.  He was a self-employed repairman and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. West was a veteran of the US Marine Corp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: DeLee Ballard of Lancaster and DeLinda Ensley of Arizona; three sons: Joe West and special friend Rhonda Bailey of Union, Gene West of Mississippi and DeWayne Garner of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Mary W. Vinson and husband Charlie of West Springs; a brother, Ralph West and wife Sandra of Union; two grandchildren: Brian Gregg of Lockhart and Michelle West of Florida; two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. West was predeceased by a brother, James West.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 29, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ray Vinson, Eddie Vinson, Butch Carter, DeWayne Garner, Willis Ballard and Larry Dean Lemons.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Friday at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Virginia Diane Howell Belk, age 56 of 2117 Crossroad, Sharon passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at the home of her mother, Virginia Howell.

Mrs. Belk was born September 13, 1957, a daughter of Virginia Ogle Howell of Sharon and the late Bergin Howell. She was formerly employed as a security officer for Coatex in Chester and had also worked at Triangle Veterinary Clinic in Union. Mrs. Belk was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters: Kota Belk of Lowery and Sandra Freeman of Union; three grandchildren: Peyton Elizabeth Edwards, Zachary Gage Freeman and Victoria Raine Freeman; three sisters; three brothers; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, November 28, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Sammy Baines. Burial will be in Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Parkins, Larry Lemons, Daryl Miller, Tommy Childers, Darrell Johnson, Gerald Howell, Christopher Edwards and Sid Wylie.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

James Alfred Moore

Mr. James Alfred “Al” Moore, age 75, husband of Joyce Tankersley Moore of 139 Alfred Moore Rd., Union, passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Moore was born in Union, SC September 1, 1938, a son of the late Woodrow A. Moore and Fannie Lawson Moore. A barber for fifty years, Mr. Moore was retired owner and operator of Main Street Hair Care. Mr. Moore was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75 and a former member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge. Mr. Moore was also a Shriner. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Rev. Dr. James Alfred Moore, Jr and wife Karen of Washington, NC, Michael Moore and wife Tammy and Joe Dean Moore and wife Michelle all of Union; a sister, Beverly Adams and husband Theron of Union; five granchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, November 24, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Guy Langston. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Michael J. Moore, Blaine Moore, Hobie Moore, Stuart Warren, Kyle O’Kane and Danny Grady. The following are asked to assemble at the chapel at 3:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort: Halon Ducket, Donald Crawford, Bill Wingo, Raymond Addison, Sammy Wilson, Mike Bennett, Johnny Turner, Dick Stalnaker, Robbie Smith, Jamie Knight and Jennie Malone.

Vernon H. Bright, Sr.

Mr. Vernon Harrison Bright, Sr., age 90, widow of Eveline West Bright of 1823 Starbrooks Dr., Charlotte, NC, passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC.

Mr. Bright was born in Buffalo, April 13, 1923, a son of the late John T. and Burdia Dobbins Bright. He was a graduate of Union High School and a 1952 graduate of Wofford College. Mr. Bright retired from Eastern Airlines, after which he worked with local car dealerships in the Charlotte area in sales and transportation. He was a veteran of the US Air Force having served during WWII and was a Mason and Past President of the Charlotte Shrine Club.

Surviving are a son, Tim Bright of Charlotte; a sister, Alma Gibbs of Union; two brothers, Bobby Ray Bright and wife Marilyn of Union and Tommy Bright and wife Ann of Clyde, NC. Mr. Bright was predeceased by a son, Vernon H. Bright, Jr.; four sisters, Louise B. Moss and husband C.H. Moss, Ruth B. Millwood and husband “Wink” Millwood, Evelyn B. McLane and husband Ed McLane, and Annie B. Cagel; a brother, Fred T. Bright and wife Lillie Mae; and a brother-in-law, Clyde Gibbs.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Shawn Ingle and Keith Geohagan. Burial with Military Honors will be at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Bright, David Barber, Toney Rector, Randall Mims, Steve McKee and Stuart Jones.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the chapel and also following the committal services at the cemetery.

Mrs. Meredith Jean Lowery, age 39 of 726 Rice Ave. Ext., Union, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013.

Mrs. Lowery was born in Newark, DE, June 15, 1974, a daughter of Stephen Druley of Conover, NC and the late Karen Johnson Druley.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband Jeff Goodwin and a son, Caleb Goodwin of Union; two sisters, Heather Turner of Greer and Allison Shealy of Saluda, SC; a brother, Todd Druley of Conover, NC.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jim Cunningham.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the church.

Dorothy P. Rash
Hendersonville, NC


Mrs. Dorothy Mae Patton Rash, age 84, widow of Arvil G. Rash, formerly of Union, passed away November 3, 2013 in Hendersonville, NC.

Mrs. Rash was born in Inman, April 23, 1929, a daughter of the late Carl and Pauline Epley Patton.  She was retired from textiles and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Rash was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Union and Fruitland Methodist Church in Hendersonville.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma House of Hendersonville and Lisa Austin and husband Terry of Union; a son, Jeffery G. Rash and wife Debra of Union; two sisters, Marcella Ellis of Lockhart and Edna Seay of Clover; two brothers, Steve Patton of Enterprise, AL and Connie Patton of Cowpens; five grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Mr. Jerry Warren.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services..

Mrs. Jennifer Michelle Canupp Moss, age 36, wife of Stephen Dewayne Moss of 4058 Walnut Street, Smyrna, SC, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Moss was born in Lockhart, SC November 29, 1976, a daughter of David R. Canupp and Martha Shrader Canupp of Sharon. She had attended York High School and was a member of Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two sons: Christopher Dewayne Moss and Alex Patrick Moss both of the home; a sister, Dina Marie Griffin of Savannah, GA; a brother, David Scott Canupp of Sharon and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Craig Marshall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Shane Dover, Michael Nivens, Jonathan Nivens, Frank Hoffecker, Kevin Rowland and Justin Fowler.

Mrs. Sadie Louise Edwards Howell, age 83, widow of James Arthur Howell, of 423 E. Main St., Union, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at her home after a short battle with cancer.

Mrs. Howell was born in Union, June 14, 1930, a daughter of the late John Clarence Edwards and Roxie Clark Edwards. She attended Jonesville High School and was retired from Ace Sweater of Union. Mrs. Howell was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Ann Howell Alexander and husband Frank of Union; a sister, Peggy McNeace of Middlesburg, FL; two grandchildren, Kim Balkum and husband Bill of Union and Shanna Alexander and friend Steve Corn of Landrum; and three great-grandsons, Will Balkum, Ethan Balkum and Ben Balkum.  Mrs. Howell was predeceased by three sisters, Agnes Adams, Margaret Cason and Bernice Griffin, and two brothers, J.E. Edwards and George Edwards.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Scott Cobb.  Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Loyd H. “Bud” Roberts, age 73, husband of Shirley Napier Roberts of 926 Sardis Rd. Union, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mr. Roberts was born in Whitmire, April 9, 1940, a son of the late Unice Kay Roberts and Ruth Livesay Roberts. He retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five daughters, Teresa R. Dehart and Janice R. Varner and husband Wayne of Buffalo, Sandra R. Inman and husband Rodney of Lockhart, Michelle Roberts of the home and Ruth R. McDade of Union; three sons, Charles “Buddy” Roberts and wife Pam and Harold Harris and wife Tracey of Union and Jerry Harris and wife Wendy of Laurens; three sisters, Kathy Hand, Murtice Vaughn and Janice Hilton and husband McDaniel all of Kingsport, TN; two brothers, Unice Roberts and Dwight Roberts and wife Jeanette of Blackwater, VA; a brother-in-law, Haskell Bledsoe of Duffield, VA;15 grandchildren: Steven Dabbs, Megan Roberts, Ada Roberts, Angie Varner, Robert “Aron” Varner, Jessica “Nicole” Inman, Rodney “Bubba” Inman, Jacob McDade, Brittany Harris, Danielle Harris, Paige Harris, Brooke Harris, Anna Harris, Kristen Harris and Mackenzie Harris and two great-grandchildren. Vivian Babb Johnson

Mrs. Vivian Babb Johnson, age 86, widow of William Johnson, Jr., passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Heartland of Union.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Buffalo, September 14, 1927 a daughter of the late Robert Babb and Hazel Brooks Babb. She was a 1944 graduate of Union High School and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant. Mrs. Johnson was a published author and gifted artist.

Surviving are two daughter, Carmen J. Jeter and husband Hugh of Union, and Donna J. Palmer of Charleston, and husband Darryl Palmer of Union; three sisters, Laura Childers and Barbara Lawson both of Buffalo, and Lucille Hubbard of Denver, NC; two brothers, Ted Babb and C.L. Babb and wife Judy all of Union; two grandsons, Collin Palmer and Jason Palmer both of Spartanburg and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Lynn Ford.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 PM Monday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Frances Mae Deal Crocker, age 91, widow of Ralph Lemond Crocker, passed away, Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Crocker was born in Cowpens, November 27, 1921 a daughter of the late Pence and Isabelle Deal. She was retired from Milliken and Co. and was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia C. Palmer and husband Robert D. of the home; a son, Jerry K. Crocker and wife Cathy of York; a sister, Hopie Ashe of York; two granddaughters, Tammy Lancaster of Mrytle Beach and Wendy Stephenson of York; three grandsons, Todd Crocker of York, Tyler Lawson of the home and Dillon Lancaster of Rutherfordton, NC; and three great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home for their care and concern of Mrs. Crocker during her stay.

Mrs. Ruby Lee Adams Meadows, age 82, of 1106 Brown’s Creek Church Rd, widow of Arlen Meadows, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Meadows was born in Union, SC on June 27, 1931 a daughter of the late Rueben B. and Lena Garner Adams. She was retired from Milliken & Co. Monarch Plant. After retirement, she worked part-time at Fairview Diner. Mrs. Meadows was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church and the Judy Hayes Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Howell and husband Michael of Inman; a grandson, Jason Michael Howell and wife Kimberly of Woodruff; a granddaughter, Stacie Gillespie and husband Shane of Greenville; four great grandchildren, Cameron, Bennett, and Emerson Howell, and Ethan Gillespie; a special nephew, Wayne Garner and wife Peggy of Union; a special niece, Francis Alman and husband Buddy. Mrs. Meadows was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn G. Matthews and a brother, Fred Garner.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan West and Rev. Steve Lemons. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James Alman, Ricky Alman, Brian Garner, Kevin Garner, Kevin Chalk, and Charles Adams.

Mrs. Anita Horne Langley Knight, age 65, widow of William Dean “Bill” Knight, formerly of Buffalo, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Knight was born in Whitmire, January 29, 1948 a daughter of the late Decatur F. “D.F.” Horne and Lillie Mae Lackey Horne. She was a graduate of Whitmire High School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Knight was known lovingly by her family and friends as “Nee-Nee”.

Surviving are a daughter, Shelly Langley of Spartanburg; a son, Phillip Langley of Lancaster; three sisters, Mary Ellen Waldrop of Buffalo, Kathy Rodgers of Jonesville and Bobbie Shytle of Inman; a granddaughter, Adaya Podvin of Spartanburg and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery. Mrs. Knight’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

The family will receive from 1:30 until 2:45 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside services.

Miss Margie Lee Summer, age 85, of Union, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Miss Summer was born in Union, SC January 12, 1928, a daughter of the late Ollie Orestus Summer and Bertha Brock Summer. She retired from Milliken & Company- Ottaray Mill after forty years of service. Miss Summer was a member of the True Gospel Life Church.

Surviving are two sisters: Brooks S Varner and Gearline Summer; a brother, Frank Summer all of Buffalo; a sister-in-law, Norma Lee Summer; a brother-in-law, Robert Strait of Jonesville; nieces and nephews: Shannon Summer Smith and husband Boris raised in the home, Dianne Anthony, Storm Anthony, Dale Summer, Christy Casey and husband Chris, Dee Anthony and wife Beth, Billy Anthony and wife Lona, Jonathan Culp, Caitlyn Horne and husband Matthew, Jacob Casey, Kailyn Casey, Emily Anthony, D.J. Anthony, Corey, Zachary and Dakota Anthony, Dillon and Faith Smith and Daniel Strait of the home. Miss Summer was predeceased by two sisters, Ola Roberta Summer and Beth Summer Strait, two brothers, Charles Orestus Summer and Forest Earl Summer, a brother-in-law, John Walter Varner and a nephew, Steven Summer.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 16, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ken Holcombe. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Miss Summer’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at Holcombe Funeral Home.

Walter W. White
Woodruff, S.C.


Mr. Walter W. White, age 78, formerly of Union, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Woodruff Manor. Mr. White was the widower of Annie Campbell White.

Mr. White was born in Union, October 6, 1935 a son of the late Claude Theodore White and Eula Russell White.  He was retired from General Motors.

Surviving are three sons, Billy White and Kenneth White both of Union and Donald R. White of Jonesville.

A memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

Herbert Theron Lipsey, Jr.

Mr. Herbert Theron Lipsey, Jr., age 56, of 5458 Foxcroft Dr., Fort Lawn, SC, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Lipsey was born in Union, February 16, 1957 a son of the late Herbert Theron “Tye” Lipsey, Sr. and Dorothy Lanier Lispey Tiner.

Surviving are his wife, Debbie Lipsey of the home; two daughters, Jessica Renee Lipsey of the home and Crystal Gail Ledford of Simpsonville; one son, Willie Andrew Lipsey and wife Kim of Greenville; two sisters, Debra Atkins of Pauline and Rose Lipsey of Union; two brothers, John Lipsey and wife Trudy of Union and Jerry Lipsey of Pauline. Mr. Lipsey was predeceased by two brothers, Chuck Lipsey and Michael Lipsey.

The family will hold a private service at a later date.

William E. “Bill” Owenby

Mr. William E. “Bill Owenby left us November 9, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was married for sixty-four years to his wife, Jane Wood Owenby.

Mr. Owenby was born December 10, 1928, a son of Inez Toney Owenby and J. F. Owenby. He was a member of First Baptist Church since 1949. Mr. Owenby was a GED graduate of Union High School and had attended Wofford College. He was a Veteran of the US Navy having served aboard USS Little Rock in World War II. Mr. Owenby was an insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance Company. He loved his church, his family, many friends and his pets. Mr. Owenby was a Wofford and Clemson fan and was happy when trying to play golf.

Surviving in addition to his wife Jane are three sons: William Barry Owenby and wife Valerie of Alexandria, VA, James Christopher “Chris” Owenby and wife Tongaa of Ulan Bator, Mongolia and John Preston Owenby of Spartanburg; two brothers: Jerry Owenby of Lancaster and Warren Ezell Owenby of Goodsville, TN; a brother-in-law, Joe Davis of Spartanburg; four granddaughters: Ruth Owenby, Rebekah Diaz, Joy Owenby and Abigail Owenby; three great-grandchildren: Logan Diaz, William Diaz and Jordan Diaz and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Owenby was predeceased by a sister, Doris Jean Davis and four brothers, Carl “Red” Owenby, Toney Owenby, James Owenby and Arthur Owenby.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Thursday, November 14, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Union conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. Rick Pendleton and Rev. Chris Owenby. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jim Coleman, Mickey Wingo, Neil Howell, Thad Strom, Bobby Hicks and Ben Wages. Honorary pallbearer will be Gene Logan.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 PM Thursday in the fellowship hall of the church prior to the service.

Lt.Col. (Ret.) James Stuart Bunch

Lt.Col. (Ret.) James Stuart Bunch, age 71 of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, passed away, November 5, 2013.

Col. Bunch was born in Los Angeles, CA, January 23, 1942, a son of the late Paul Stanley Bunch and Dorothy Ann Suhr Bunch. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Southern California and was retired from the US Army having served two tours of duty in Viet Nam.

Surviving are a daughter, Laura Gault and husband Jim; two sons, Darin Bunch and wife Sarah and Kevin Bunch all of Spartanburg; a sister, Pat Ferreira of Houston, TX; five grandchildren, Bryson Gault, Bowen Gault, Caedmon Bunch, Davia Bunch and Acen Herron.

Funeral services are being scheduled for Arlington National Cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Vaughan Mitchell, age 86, widow of Haskell Donald “Hack” Mitchell, Sr, formerly of 304 Buffalo West Springs Hwy, Union, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Union County, SC , April 4, 1927, a daughter of the late James Vernon Vaughan, Sr and Maggie Palmer Vaughan. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons: Don Mitchell of Union and Lynn Mitchell and wife Melissa of Jonesville and two grandchildren, Rob and Anna Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by sisters, Berta M. Vaughan and Louise V. Riddle and brothers, Palmer “Slim”, Broadus T., Willie Hope “Shank”, and James Vernon “J.V.” Vaughan, Jr.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Stuart Allan Black, age 53 of 127 South Street, Buffalo passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Black was born in Decatur, IN July 5, 1960, a son of the late Jerry Wheeler and Sharon Turner Wheeler Black, and the step-son of the late Robert Black, He was employed with Brown’s Roofing and was a Veteran of the US Army. Mr. Black was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

Surviving are a finance’ Elaine Horne of the home; a daughter: Nikki Brown Walker; two grandchildren: Jade Walker and Kaleb Walker all of the home; a sister, Melissa Lawson and husband Phillip of Blacksburg; a brother Dean Black of Vanwert, OH; special friends: Shorty Smith, Larry Black, David Cohen, Bo Gregory, Robby Gregory and Roy Revis, and a special friend and boss, Tack Brown and a special father, Jimmy Dean Williams. Mr. Black was predeceased by a sister, Roberta Waldron and a brother, Forrest Black.

Mr. John Edward Craig, age 93, husband of Lucille Stewart Craig of 1562 Old Buncombe Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg.

Mr. Craig was born in Union, SC October 10, 1920, a son of the late John Craig and Bessie Bailey Craig. He retired from Magnolia Finishing Company in Gaffney and was a member of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Mr. Craig was a Veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II Sea Bees and also retired from the US Navy Reserve.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, Lewis Craig and wife Frances of Moore; two nieces: Melissa Schoeffel of Charleston and Teresa Hoffberg of Union and a great-niece, Katie Schoeffel of Charleston.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 8, 2013 at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Anthony Schoeffel, Dan Burnett, Reid Stone, Stephen Stone, Charles Craig and Robin Jones.

Mr. Charles N. Foster, age 93 of 262 Pineland Rd., Union, widow of Elizabeth Cargill Foster and Edith Marcy Foster, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Foster was born in Union, SC December 26, 1919, a son of the late Ernest Foster and Elizabeth Foster. He retired from Carlisle Finishing; a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II where he served in England, Germany and France. Mr. Foster was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, and a Sunday School Teacher for forty years.

Surviving are a daughter, Evonne Varner Stephens of Union; a sister, Helen Gist and husband Bob of Union; four grandchildren: Scott Varner of Union, Mike Varner of Buffalo, Sammy Edens of Virginia and Ricki Escalante of Union; five great-grandchildren: Eric Edens and Fiancé’ Chelsea of Union, D.J. Beard of Spartanburg, Zach O’Shields, Faith and Grace Escalante all of Union; a daughter-in-law, Terri Foster of Buffalo; a brother-in-law, Albert Cargill of Colorado; three nieces: Mary Beth Bower of AL, Wanda and Gloria Cargill both of Colorado; a nephew, Thomas Cargill of AL and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Foster was predeceased by a daughter, Janice Charleen Edens, a son, Charles Rickey Foster, a sister, Ruth Nash, a brother, Leroy Foster and a granddaughter, Nicki Beard.

A Memorial Service will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 8, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan Gregory.

Mr. Charles H. Lawson, age 80, husband of Sylvia Barber Lawson of 929 Steadman Farm Drive, Inman, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lawson was born in Buffalo, SC November 20, 1932, a son of the late Floyd Lawson and Lola Brooks Lawson. He was a 1952 graduate of Union High School and also a graduate of North Greenville College. Mr. Lawson retired from Pet Dairy and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guards. He was a member of Inman Mills Baptist Church and had served as Music Director for various churches.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons: Paul Mitchell Lawson of the home, David Brian Lawson and wife Lisa, Tim Lawson and wife Michelle all of Boiling Springs and Chris Lawson of the home; a sister, Polly Smith and husband Wayne of Union; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by a son, Charles Terry Lawson; a sister, Bebe Malpass and two brothers, Harold Lawson and Danny Lawson.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Haynesworth Van Epps, III

Mr. Haynesworth Van “Sonny” Epps, III, age 88, widower of Millie Douglass Epps of 108 Cherokee Ave., Union, passed away peacefully, Monday, November 4, 2013 at his home.

Sonny was born in Jonesville, December 12, 1924 a son of the late Haynesworth Van Epps, Jr. and Lucille McWhirter Epps McKinney. He was a 1943 graduate of Blue Ridge School for Boys in Hendersonville, NC. During World War II, from 1943 to1946, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Philadelphia as a Pharmacist Mate.

Following his tour of duty, Sonny entered Presbyterian College in Clinton, and graduated in 1950. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Upon graduation, Sonny returned to Union and began work at the Union Coca-Cola Bottling Co., where he was Vice-President and Sales Manager. He later retired from the S.C. Dept. Of Social Services.

Sonny was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. For over 50 years, he was a member of Investors Twelve and the Union Elks Lodge.
Surviving are two children; a son, Haynesworth Van Epps, IV and his wife Choon Lee Ang of Spartanburg and a daughter, Kendall Epps Alexander and her husband Edward Click Alexander of Lexington; and a       granddaughter, Catherine Marks Alexander also of Lexington.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. David Bauknight.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Mrs. Mary Sparks Gossett, age 91, widow of R.P. Gossett of 302 Springsdale Dr., Union, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2013 at National Health Care in Clinton.

Mrs. Gossett was born in Union, November 11, 1921, a daughter of the late William Levi Sparks and Katie Marie Hewitt Sparks. She was a graduate of Union High School and had  worked as a delivery driver with Burgess Cleaners in Union for 30 years and retired from Her Majesty as a supervisor after 16 years. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Mary Lybrand Sunday School class and the Eugenia Smith Circle.  Mrs. Gossett was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Tamison G. Ward of Union; a grandson, Heath Ward and wife Erica Boyd Ward of Spartanburg and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Gossett was predeceased by a son, Brent Gossett; two granddaughters, Deidre LaTrae Ward and Megan Suzette Ward and four brothers, Arthur, Clyde, Robert and Ralph Sparks.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, November 8, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Mr. Don Shetley and Rev. Merritt Wentz.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Mrs. Evelyn Elizabeth Sumner Addison, age 94, widow of James Harley “Jay-Bird” Addison, Jr., passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Addison was born in Union, December 22, 1918, a daughter of the late Murphy and Elease Leonhardt Sumner. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken, Co. Mrs. Addison was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member of the Keen-Agers Club. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Jo Carol Smith and husband William of Union; a son, James Harley “Sonny” Addison, III and wife Linda of Gastonia, NC; four grandchildren, Donna Cody and husband Don and Ricky Smith and wife Amy all of Union, Rev. Dr. Ridgeway Addison and wife Sarah of Washington, DC, and Heather Breese and husband Chris of Gastonia, NC; three great-grandchildren, Kayla Cody, Brett Smith and Brooke Smith; several nieces and nephews and a special family member and care-giver, Alien Smith.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff and nurses of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home and Hospice Care of South Carolina, for their care and concern of Mrs. Addison during her illness.

Luther Pierce Hendon, II
Boerne, Texas


Mr. Luther “Pierce” Hendon, II, age 65, passed away October 24, 2013, at his home in Boerne, Texas. He was born October 28, 1947, in Marietta, Georgia to Luther P. and Lorene Hendon. Mr. Hendon was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Keith Hendon.

He is survived by his wife of 45 ½ years, Deborah; daughter and her husband, Lori and Rev. Tim Manning and their children, Hayden, Ron Anders, Kaylee, and Peter; daughter and her husband Robin and Maj. David Watts and their children, Mary Beth, Isabelle, and Makayla; son and his wife, Trey and Leslie Hendon; sister, Tena Warren; and brother Larry Hendon and Jimmy Hendon.

Pierce was instrumental in the planning stages for the High Point Academy Charter Schools in Spartanburg, South Carolina and Forth Worth, Texas. This project will affect the lives of thousands of children from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The Spartanburg school has been approved and will open Fall of 2014. Pierce’s passion was the aquaponic and hydroponics lab the school is preparing to set up. In the mid 1970's, he served as Minister of Youth and Music at First Baptist Church of Union.
