Mrs. Janice Elaine Jenkins Allen, age 73, of 309 North 3rd St., Lockhart, widow of Eldridge Bryan “Tiny” Allen passed away Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Allen was born in Union, October 6, 1940, a daughter of the late Wardlaw and Janie Lee Cudd Jenkins. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a trained Licensed Practical Nurse. Mrs. Allen had worked at Hope Hospital in Lockhart and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart where she was a member of the Adult Two Sunday School Class and a member of the WMU. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are two daughters, Patti Elaine Turner and husband David, and Penni Allen Manus all of Union; a sister, Wanda Stein and husband Glenn of Lockhart, two brothers, Larry “Luke” Jenkins and wife Brenda of Lockhart and Dean Jenkins of Central; three grandchildren, Nick Turner, Triston Manus, and Maryashlee Manus; and her best friends, Kay Revels and Linda Williams both of Union and Pam Smith of Lockhart. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by a sister, Jennie Woodsby.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, November 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Lockhart conducted by Rev. Ben Hill, Rev. Brian Childers and Rev. Dr. Don McCutcheon.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Monty Allen, Mike Allen, Scott Vlock, Jason Childers, Hank Parker, Arnold Childers and Phil Bagwell.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

David L. Gibson
Lockhart, S.C.


Mr. David L. Gibson, age 75, husband of Jimmie Roberts Gibson of 408 Mill St., Lockhart, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Gibson was born in Union Co., July 23, 1938, a son of the late Russell S. and Sally Childers Gibson. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Duke Power. Mr. Gibson was a retired from the SC National Guard and was a veteran of the US Coast Guard. He was a member of Lockhart First Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, a former member of the choir and had served as a Deacon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, John David Gibson and wife Melissa, one brothers, Billy Dean Gibson; a sister, Frances Belk all of Union; three granddaughters, Karen Gibson, Layla Gibson and Elizabeth Gibson. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by two sisters, Nellie Mae Dabbs and Alpha Hanna Wood; six brothers, Carl R. Gibson, Buck Gibson, Glenn Gibson, Little Jim Gibson, Ed Gibson and Olin D. Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, November 1, 2013 at Lockhart First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ben Hill and Rev. Dr. Don McCutcheon.  Burial will be at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Gibson, Eddie Gibson, Steve Robinson, Luke Jenkins, Scott Vlock, Wesley Belk, Casey Watkins and Pat Fowler.

Members of the #2 Sunday School Class of Lockhart First Baptist Church along with William Vinson, Jantzen Childers, Arnold Childers and Robert Lawson are asked to serve as the honorary escort.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Brian E. Bennett, age 42, husband of Kellie Williams Bennett of 155 Spencer Rd., Jonesville, SC, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 26, 2013.

Mr. Bennett was born July 26, 1971, a son of Larry and Lynda Harvey Bennett of Jonesville. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School, Spartanburg Methodist College and Wofford College. Mr. Bennett was employed with the Union County School District as a Teacher’s Assistant for Special Needs Education. He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir, a former Deacon and a former Sunday School Teacher.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a brother, Richard Bennett and wife Ellen; two nephews, Kevin Bennett and Michael Bennett; a niece, Brook Kelly and a grandfather, Rev. Austin Bennett all of Jonesville. Mr. Bennett was predeceased by his grandparents, Eddie and Thelma Harvey and Cleo Bennett. Brian was a loving and devoted husband, son and brother.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 1, 2013 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will be in the West Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Greg Powell, Tyler Petty, Tim Justice, Mike Gault, Scott Garrett and Andy Bogan. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM Friday to form the Honorary Escort: David and Betty Jo Taylor and members of the Brothers and Sisters in Christ Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Carrie Belle Turner Harris, age 95, widow of Woodrow W. Harris, formerly of Lockhart, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Brookview Health Care, Gaffney, SC.

Mrs. Harris was born in Hickory, NC September 30, 1918, a daughter of the late Raymond Howe Turner and Perna Meeks Turner. She retired from Lockhart Mill and was a member of Lockhart Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Harris Butler of Gaston, SC; a son, Bobby D. Harris and wife Janice of Lockhart;a brother-in-law, Claude Boling of Inman; four grandchildren: Sherri Harris Birch, Bobby Scott Harris, Jerry Butler, Jr and Michael Butler; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by two sisters, Irene Turner Boling and Hazel Turner Day and three brothers, Raymond Turner, Vernon Turner and William “Bill” Turner.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, October 28, 2013 at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by Rev Steve Lemons.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 PM Monday at SR Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the service.

Timothy C. Wylie, Jr.

Mr. Timothy “T.C” C. Wylie, Jr., age 94 of 203 Springdale Drive, Union, widower of Teny Stone Wylie, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Heartland of Lexington, West Columbia, SC.

Mr. Wylie was born October 29, 1918, a son of the late Timothy C. Wylie, Sr. and Lula Goff Wylie. He was a graduate of Columbia City Schools and the University of S.C. Mr. Wylie was a retired Pharmacist and owner of Plexico Wylie Drugstore for thirty-five years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church; a member of the BPO Elks Lodge #1321 and had served in the American Legion. Mr. Wylie was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II.

Surviving are a sister, Margaret W. Sox; a niece, Mary Lynn Sox; a great-niece, Casey L. McIntosh and a great-nephew, Christopher “Kipper” McIntosh all of Lexington.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, October 28, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev David Bauknight. Members of the Table of Wisdom of Bantam Chief and the Hardee’s Bunch are asked to sit in a group as special pallbeares.

Visitation will be held following the service in the Parlor of Grace United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Virginia “Jennie” Harmon Happerfield, age 80, widow of Frank B. Happerfield of 137 N. Church St., Union, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Happerfield was born in Union, July 16, 1933, a daughter of the late Dewey Caldwell Harmon and Marie Starnes Harmon. She was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Winn-Dixie Stores. Mrs. Happerfield was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and the BPOE Does.

Surviving are two daughters, Vicki H. Nash, and Cheryl H. Morris and husband Stephen all of Union; a brother, Arthur Harmon and wife Ann of Union; three grandchildren, Heather Nicole Nash, Haley Denise Nash and Stephen Bradley Morris; and two great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Shay Lawson and Kaitlyn Savannah Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Unity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Cribb. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:45 PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.

Mr. Jimmy Arthur Rhinehart, age 65 of 199 Hill Top View, Union, widower of Cheryl Todd Rhinehart, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013.

Mr. Rhinehart was born in Union, SC February 16, 1948, a son of the late Troy Rhinehart and Mildred Propes.

Surviving are three daughters: Patricia R. Gregory and husband Matthew of the home, Tina Deyoung and husband Danny of Woodruff, and Pam Morgan of Whitmire; three sons: Jimmy Ray Rhinehart and wife Misty, Jimmy Rhinehart, Jr all of Union and Roy Rhinehart of Woodruff; three sisters: Deloris Phillips and husband Rev. Dewayne Phillips of Pauline, Rosemary Silvers and husband Rick of Whitmire and Marie Rhinehart of Pauline; a brother, Donald Lee Rhinehart of Union; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Vickie Beheler of Union and a brother-in-law, Monty Todd. Mr. Rhinehart. Mr. Rhinehart was predeceased by a daughter, Lynn Rhinehart and a brother, Troy “Pee Wee” Rhinehart.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 25, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Dewayne Phillips.

Mrs. Suzette “Suzy” Murphy Linder, age 57, wife of Charles Dennis Linder of Pensacola, FL passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, FL.

Mrs. Linder was born in Union, SC December 9, 1955, a daughter of Margaret Murphy Smith of Carlisle and the late Wayne R. Murphy. She was a graduate of Union High School and was a member of the former West Side Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Valerie Westbrooks and husband Craig of Pacolet and Kacey Linder of Pensacola, FL; a brother, Jay Murphy and wife Pam of Jonesville; five grandchildren: Tyler, Ashley, Kyle, Kaylen and Reed; a step-daughter, Heather Woods and husband Robbie of Union; a step-son, Chris Linder and wife Susan of Pacolet; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Linder was predeceased by a brother, Michael Murphy.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 24, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Mrs. Deborah Lynn Gilkison Weeks, age 44, wife of William Carroll “Bill” Weeks, of 2249-A Lockhart Hwy, Union, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Weeks was born January 21, 1969 a daughter of Anne Hawkins Gilkison of Union and the late William Gilkison. She was formerly employed with Conso Products and with Diversico with Milliken & Co. Mrs. Weeks was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother, are a daughter, Marissa Parks and husband Michael of Union; a step-daughter Melissa Ownby of Greenville; a son, William N. “B.J.” Gilkison, III and wife, Scarlett of Union; a stepson James Eric Weeks of Greenville; four sisters, Penny Revis and husband Harold, Peggy Gilkison, Elizabeth “Faye” Lee and husband Terry, and Melissa Howell and husband Kenneth all of Union; four brothers, William N. Mrs. Eva J. Carter, age 97, widow of Edgar T. Carter, passed away at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Monday, October 21, 2013 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Carter was born in Union, SC September 16, 1916, a daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Robinson Johnson. She was retired from Milliken & Co.– Monarch Plant. Mrs. Carter was a former member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church before moving her letter to Morningside Baptist Church after making her home with her niece, Margaret Williford.

Surviving are a sister, Zora J. Vinson, of Union, SC and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by one brother, Hoyle T. Johnson, five sisters, Mary J. Dawkins, Frances J. Wood, Helen Johnson, Marion Johnson, and Dolly J. Bobo Revels.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM, Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Aulbrey Calvert.

Visitation will be held prior to the services from 3:00 until 3:45 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rachel Anne Rentschler, age 37, of 2427 Wallace Ave, Spartanburg, widow of George Scott Rentschler, passed away at her home.

Mrs. Rentschler was born March 9, 1976 in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of Harrod L. Basham of Union and Melissa Young Basham of Fernandina Beach, Fl.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a son, Brock Andrew Rentschler of Union. She is predeceased by a brother, Harrod Basham, Jr.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Donald Steve Sprouse
Jonesville, S.C.


Mr. Donald Steve Sprouse, age 76, of 280 Sprouse Rd., Jonesville, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 at Wesley Court Assisted Living in Boiling Springs.

Mr. Sprouse was born in Union, June 27, 1937, a son of the late Oatzel and Ethel Sprouse Sprouse.   He was a retired truck driver and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mr. Sprouse also was a veteran of the US Navy.

Surviving are a daughter, Angela Plemons and husband Harold; a son, Steven Sprouse and wife Jureda all of Jonesville; two brothers, Henry Sprouse and wife Marlene and Eugene Sprouse also of Jonesville; and two grandchildren, Emily Jade Plemons and Jacob Plemons.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2013 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey.

The family will be at the home of his son, Steven Sprouse, 3137 Furman L. Fendley Hwy., Jonesville, where they will receive friends after the memorial service.

Charlie "Frank" Bobo, Sr.
Union, S.C.


Mr. Charlie Frank Bobo, Sr., age 88, widower of Elizabeth Wilson Bobo, of Oakmont Residential passed away, Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Bobo was born in Cross Keys, January 5, 1925, a son of the late Elmer Franklin Bobo and Kate Stevens Bobo. He was a graduate of Cross Anchor High School and retired from Big A Auto Parts. Mr. Bobo later retired from NAPA of Union. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII and was the recipient of three battle stars.

Mr. Bobo was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church and had served as a Deacon, Chairman of Board of Deacons, Treasurer, Sunday School teacher and mentor. While a resident of Oakmont, Mr. Bobo felt he was called to serve his Lord by ministering and witnessing to his fellow residents and friends. Mr. Bobo also enjoyed wood working and studying WWII history.

Surviving are two sons, Frank Bobo, Jr. and wife Linda of Union and Steve Bobo and wife Vicki of Greer; a daughter, Loraine Mellette and husband John of Blythewood; a brother, Bill Bobo and wife Kate of Laurens; six grandchildren, Charlie Bobo, III and wife Eileen, Angela Varner and husband Tad, Jonathan Bobo and wife Mary Beth, Matt Bobo and wife Brooke, Beth Mellette and Melissa Mellette; five great-grandchildren, Charlie Bobo, IV, George Bobo, Kayley Bobo, Philip Bobo and Alex Bobo and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Bobo was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Greg Barefoot, Rev. Dr. Jim Ivey and Mr. Jerry Gossett.

Burial with Military Honors will be at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Charlie Bobo, Jonathan Bobo, Matt Bobo, Tad Varner, Alan Bobo and John Bobo.

The staff and residents of Oakmont Residential and members of the Jim Smith Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Mr. Marvin J. McAbee, age 76 of 103 Lakeview Heights, Union, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McAbee was born in Union, November 16, 1936, a son of the late Gettis and Lula Prince McAbee.  He was a veteran of the US Air Force  was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a son, Eddie Prince and wife Amanda of Buffalo; a sister, Shirley Sherbert and husband Oren of Enoree; two granddaughters, Brooke Holloway of Greenwood and Sally Prince of Buffalo and three nephews.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 21, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Greg Barefoot.

Ms. Melissa Lynn Watts McFalls, age 43 of 212 Cumberland Ave., Greenville, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Ms. McFalls was born in Greenville, August 19, 1970, a daughter of Shelby Jean Thrift Watts of Spartanburg and the late James Lloyd Watts.  She was employed with the Event Staff at the Bi-Lo Center and attended Triune Church of Greenville.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Crystal M. Millwood and husband Wesley of Union; four sisters, Barbara Jean Graves of Greenville, Wanda Lee Motley of Lyman, Becky Ann King of Woodstock, GA, and Audrey Joy Wells of Union; three brothers, Timothy James Dempsey Watts, John Wesley Watts, and Jim-Paul Trinity Watts all of Union, and three grandchildren, Logan Fowler, Parker Fowler and Corbin Millwood.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Monday, October 21, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

Mr. John Andrew Lowe, age 51 of 146 Hart Street, Pacolet, SC passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Lowe was born in Spartanburg, SC a son of the late Harold Craig Lowe, Sr. and Virginia Louise Coffee Lowe. He attended Dorman High School and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are two brothers: Craig Lowe and friend Lillian Crawford of Pacolet and Eddie Lowe of Spartanburg and  a cousin, Ann Malone of Spartanburg. Mr. Lowe was predeceased by two brothers, Randall Bill Lowe and Samuel Judson Lowe.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the home of his brother, Craig Lowe, 211 Bryant Rd., Pacolet.

Paul G. Candler
San Francisco, CA


Paul Candler, 48, artist, son, teacher, brother, thinker, friend, dreamer, passed away on Wednesday,October 9, 2013 in San Francisco, CA. Paul, a graduate of Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, was an explosive bundle of dichotomies; intense and mild, compassionate and
harsh, obsessive and cool, free and compulsive, selfish and caring, destructive and creative. His uniqueness will be forever missed and never forgotten by his friends and family.

Paul, an accomplished artist working in the field of digital design, was an arts educator who taught in university and community-based settings, and was the curator of three exhibitions of comics art. A lifelong fan of underground comics and graphic artists, in 2002 he curated the exhibition Raw, Boiled, and Cooked: Comics on the Verge for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. It was a dream come true for him to gather and exhibit the works of some of his artistic heroes.

Paul was an avid collector of art, music, books, games, comics, and much more. He has taught drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and origami in community-based workshops, private schools, Ringling School of Art and Design, and has taught comics history at the San Francisco Art Institute.
He has volunteered his time leading children’s tours of art exhibitions at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. He enjoyed reading and volunteered to read at the Lighthouse Center for the Blind.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Margie Greene Candler of Greenville, SC, and his sister, Susan and her partner, Laura Stanton, and their daughter, Eliza Rain Stanton-Candler of Greenville, SC. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Davis Candler, of Philadelphia, PA, his maternal grandparents, Allen and Hazel Greene of Union, SC, his paternal grandparents, Bea and Paul Candler of Greenville, SC, and his beloved black Labrador, Xerox.

A Memorial Service celebrating Paul’s life will be held in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, 639 North Main Street, Greenville, SC at 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 20, 2013. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A memorial service will be held in San Francisco, CA at a later date.

Paul was a non-traditional person, and in honor of him the family request casual dress for the memorial service, rather than business or Sunday attire.

Mr. Johnny Mitchell Jones, age 64, husband of Kathy Motts Jones, of 1011 Main St., Buffalo, passed away October 14, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born in Pendergrass, GA, September 5, 1949, a son of the late Harry and Gertrude Bruce Jones. He was retired from Wellington Leisure Products of Jonesville and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ernie Weathers of Buford, GA; and two grandchildren, Cody Franklin Bennett and Jennifer Bennett. Mr. Jones was predeceased by a son, Frankie Weathers.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 18, 2013 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Jerry Ford and Rev. Paul Manis. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 7:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening also at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.

Mr. John E. Sexton, Sr. age 79, widower of Barbara June Posey Sexton, of 220 Carem Rd,. Union SC passed away, Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Sexton was born in Cripple Creek, Virginia, July 20, 1934, a son of the late Sam C. Sexton and Lola Hawks Sexton. Mr. Sexton was a member of McCutcheon Presbyterian Church and had served in the U. S.  Army where he was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was retired from Carlisle Finishing Company.

Surviving are a son: John E. Sexton, Jr., of the home; a sister Lois Ayers of NC.; three brothers: Doug Sexton and wife Joyce of Galax, VA., Don Sexton of West Virginia and David Sexton of Galax, VA., four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Mr. Sexton was predeceased by a son, Tony Sexton.

A crypt side service will be held 2:00 PM  Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton.

Visitation will be held  immediately following the service at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Peyton Elizabeth Gill of the home; a maternal-grandmother, Tami Renee Ragan of Pacolet; a maternal-grandfather, Keith Earl Ragan of Spartanburg; a paternal grandmother, Carla Michelle Gill of La France; maternal-great grandparents, Leneda and Richard Cassel of Pacolet; a maternal-great-grandfather, Ken Bailey of Lake Greenwood; a maternal-great-grandmother, Judy Coxey of Cowpens; an aunt, Kristen Ragan of Pacolet; an uncle, Dylen Ochiltree of Wellford; and several great aunts and uncles.

Mrs. Laura Elizabeth Cookson (La-La) Latham, age 77, wife of Thomas William “Buck” Latham, of 367 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., went home to be with the Lord, Thursday October 10, 2013.

Mrs. Latham was born in Lockhart, October 13, 1935, a daughter of the late George and Bessie Sealey Cookson. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the Union County Sheriff’s Dept. Mrs. Latham more recently had worked with Union Co. Communications. She was a member of Lockhart Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and Clerk of Sesessions. She previously served as a Sunday School teacher and President of the Women of the Church. Mrs. Latham was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Eugenia L. McKnight and husband John of Union; a son, Donald Ray Latham and wife Mary Ann of Sharon; three grandchildren, Jennifer Dingeldein and husband Donnie, John McKnight, III and wife Molly and Donna Latham of Blacksburg; and four great-grandchildren, William Gage Dingeldein, Noelle Elizabeth Dingeldein, Issac Latham and Makayla Leanne McKnight. Mrs. Latham was predeceased by two sisters, Cornelia Farmer and Loretta Queen.

Mrs. Ruth Rogers, age 93, of 202 Hillcrest Drive, Union, widow of Jessie Silas Rogers, Jr., passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Rogers was born in Union, SC on October 20, 1919 a daughter of the late Sheffie Columbus “Shep” and Ethel Bentley Stines. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Rogers was retired from Milliken & Co. Monarch Plant. She was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church. As long as her health permitted she was a member of Jimmy Smith Sunday School class and the Winnie Couch Circle.

Surviving are her twin sons, Donald Rogers and wife Marilyn and Ronald Rogers and wife Rosa; three grandchildren, Erin Bullman and husband Shane, Julie Thomas and husband Jason, and Christopher Rogers; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Morgan, and Ryan Bullman and Ian and Ivy Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Paul Stines and one sister, Ellen Nelson.

Graveside Services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ralph Brown and Rev. Gregory Barefoot. The family will receive friends immediately following the committal services.

Mr. Norman Dean Moore, age 80, of 1906 Mudbridge Road, Jonesville, widower of Rosa Lee Haney Moore, passed away Monday, October 7, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Moore was born in Union, SC on January 20, 1933 a son of the late Dave and Zettie Mae Paris Moore. He was retired from United Merchants Buffalo Plant. Mr. Moore attended Monarch Assembly of God. He loved to cook and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are three daughters, Lynn Steele and husband Michael, Joyce Greene and friend Tubo Owens, and Lisa Thomas and husband Mark; three sons, Joe Dean Moore and wife Marie, Terry Moore, and Ray Moore and wife Sherry; two sisters, Leoma Hicks and Brenda Paris; twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren. Mr. Moore was predeceased by a brother, John Moore.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Mr. Moore’s grandson’s will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Carrie Louise Haas Martin, age 100, widow of M.D. Martin, formerly of Spruce St., Union, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Martin was born in Gaffney, May 5, 1913, a daughter of the late William Adam Haas and Melinda Lucinda Gaffney Haas.  She was a graduate of Limestone College and retired from the Union Co. School District having taught 3rd grade at Foster Park Elementary School. Mrs. Martin was a member of First Baptist Church and was the last of eight children in her immediate family.

Surviving are two sons, Hugh Martin and wife Terry of Spartanburg and Lynn Martin and wife Dorie of Suffolk VA; two grandchildren, Doug Martin of Suffolk, VA, and Angela Martin Kobrick and husband Thomas of New York, NY. Also surviving are  several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Emory.   The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 AM  at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home prior to the graveside services.

Mr. Roger Dale Lipsey, Sr., age 62, widower of Sybil Bradburn Lipsey, of 322 Spencer Rd., Jonesville, passed away Saturday October 5, 2013 at the home of his daughter.

Mr. Lipsey was born in Union, February 5, 1951, a son of the late Willie Austin Lipsey, Sr. and Mary Pearl Baldwin Lipsey.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Spartanburg Technical College and  was formerly employed with Timkin Co.  Mr. Lipsey was a veteran of the US Army (Military Police) having served a tour of duty in Korea during the Vietnam War. He loved natured and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are a son, Roger D. Lipsey, Jr. of the home; a daughter, Amanda Jill Adams and husband Jason of Jonesville; three sisters, Peggy Henderson of Jonesville, Shirley Moss of Union and Della Whitt of Pacolet; a brother, Millard Lipsey of Union; and three grandsons, Jason Adams, Jr., Austin Adams and Preston Adams. Mr. Lipsey was predeceased by five brothers, Joe Leonard Lipsey, Jerry Lipsey, Willie Austin Lipsey, Jr., Ronnie Lipsey and Marvin Lipsey.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Medi Home Hospice and Destiny Moss for their care and concern of Mr. Lipsey during his illness.

Mrs. Waunet Smith Petty, age 92, formerly of Buffalo-West Springs Highway, passed away, Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Petty was born in Union, SC August 20, 1921 a daughter of the late Amos and Mae Lawson Smith. For 49 years she was married to her husband the late Robert H. Petty. Mrs. Petty was retired from United Merchants Manufacturing. She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church where she had participated in Adult Choir and Senior Citizens of Buffalo United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted.

Surviving are a son, Michael R. Petty; one granddaughter, Amanda Lowe and husband Eric of Honea Path; one son Christopher Petty and fiancee Lauren Evans of Piedmont; one great-grandson, Garrett Lowe of Honea Path; two brothers-in-law, Glenn P. Caldwell of Buffalo and William (Bill) Petty of Greenville. She was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Caldwell and Margaret Robertson.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, October 4, 2013 at Buffalo United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Ron Towery and Chaplain Vernon Thornhill. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Claude Bernard Bobo, age 84, husband of Sybil Turner Bobo, of 110 Springdale Drive, Union, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mr. Bobo was born in Union, SC on June 9, 1929 a son of the late Bernard and Bessie Sanders Bobo. He was retired from Torrington & Co. where he worked as a supervisor. Mr. Bobo was a veteran of the US Army where he served in the Korean War. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Morningside Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. Mr. Bobo was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Mrs. Alice Fowler Harris, age 93, widow of Dewey Harris, formerly of 1605 Jonesville Hwy., Union, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Harris was born in Jonesville, June 28, 1920, a daughter of the late Herbert Fowler, Sr. and Dessie Horne Fowler. She was retired from McLellan’s Five and Dime and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary H. Ivey of Union; a sister, Mamie Addis of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Debbie I. Trammel and husband Steve, Cindy Ivey and Kim I. McNease; three great-grandchildren, Brooke T. Sherbert and husband Dan, Dylan McNeace and Marissa McNease; and two great-great-grandchildren; Laine Ivey Sherbert and Brent Grayson Sherbert. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by four sisters, Pauline F. Turner, Ruth F. Knox, Nellie Fowler and Daisy Bell F. Buice; five brothers, Jennings Fowler, Eugene Fowler, Nathaniel Fowler, Herbert Fowler, Jr. and Hoyt Earl Fowler; and her son-in-law, Haskell G. Ivey.
