John Dillion Eversman, Jr.

Mr. John Dillon Eversman, Jr., “Jack” age 86, husband of Judith Thomas Eversman formerly of Union, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Mr. Eversman was born in Pineville, KY, January 12, 1927, a son of the late John Dillon Eversman and Ellen Allston Eversman. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill and retired from Milliken & Company. Mr. Eversman was a member of Grace United Methodist Church , a volunteer with Union County Meals on Wheels and a former member of the Union Lions Club. Mr. Eversman was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. He was predeceased by a son, John Dillon Eversman, III and a twin brother, Robert Eversman.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lynn E. Zeringue and husband Stephen of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter-in-law, Anne Menna and husband John of Knoxville, TN; three grandsons: John Dillon Eversman, IV of Atlanta, GA, John Joseph Zeringue and Andrew Stephen Zeringue both of Mt. Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Judi Eversman of Pittsburg, PA; a niece, Patti O’Hara and husband Jerry of Peachtree City, GA and a nephew, Robert Eversman of Madison, WI.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. David Bauknight. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Maurice Cordell, Gene Logan, Gus Jeter, Rick Matthews, John Brown and Charles Jeter.

The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church immediately following the committal service.

Judy Mincey Sprouse
Lockhart, SC


Mrs. Judy Mincey Sprouse, age 70, wife of Donald R. “Don” Sprouse of 312 North 3rd Street, Lockhart passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Sprouse was born in Winnsboro, SC April 14, 1943, a daughter of the late Julian Wade Mincey and Nellie Burckhalter Mincey. She retired from Conso Products and was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sprouse loved her family, animals and was an avid craft maker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a beloved pet, Sara; nieces: Renee Denton of Union, Mary Munn, Lynn Eddington both of Rock Hill, Jeanine Dodson of Fayettville, NC and Vickey Mincey of Sunset Beach; two great-nieces, Amy Magee of Rock Hill and Kelsey Granger of Baltimore, MD plus a number of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Sprouse was predeceased by two sisters, Susan Mincey Denton and Grace Mincey Self; two bothers, David Mincey and Richard Mincey and also three other siblings.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Farmer and Sammy Webber.

Visitation will be 11:30-12:30 PM Tuesday in the church prior to the service.

Joyce Garner Blakely
Columbia, SC


Mrs. Joyce Ann Garner Blakely, age 77, loving wife of Bobby F. Blakely of 2105 LeGrand Rd., Columbia, SC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 28, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Blakely was born in Kelton, SC November 27, 1935, a daughter of the late Davis Roy Garner and Bessie Adams Garner. She was a 1953 graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from District 2 School System in Columbia. Mrs. Blakely was a member of North Trentholm Baptist Church in Columbia. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to her husband of fifty-seven years are a son, Bobby F. Blakely, Jr and wife Gail of Prosperity; five grandchildren: Tamala Mooneyhan and husband Jon of Lugoff, Heather Powers and husband Daniel of Ermo, Jessica Backman and husband Dan of Lexington, Brittney Penn and husband Thomas and Blake Timmons and wife Katie all of Columbia; three great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way; three sisters: Nathalee Comer of Hendersonville, NC, Betty Harvey of Jonesville and Patsy Garner of Columbia and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Blakely was predeceased by three sisters, Thelma Thrasher, Margaret Howell and Lou Jean Knox and five brothers: Wilbur, Everette, Hershal, Thomas Leondard and Donald Garner.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 30, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Dr.  Kenneth Johnson and Rev. Joe Copeland. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Michael Wilkins "Mike" Strain
Shelby, NC


Michael Wilkins "Mike" Strain, age 62, of Hickory Creek Apartments, Shelby, NC, died Thursday afternoon, September 26, 2013, at Cleveland Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Mike, a son of Sarah Violet Wilkins Strain of Shelby, NC and the late Samuel Butler Strain, was born February 23, 1951, in Spartanburg, SC. He was a 1970 graduate of Shelby High School and attended Gaston College. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. Mike, an avid outdoorsman, especially loved fishing, hunting and exploring all the beauty of God's creation. More than anything, Mike enjoyed spending quality time with his dear family and friends. Showing kindness and sharing his life with others were traits Mike exhibited to both friends and strangers.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, Sarah W. Strain of Shelby, are his son Michael Wilkins "Wilkes" Strain, Jr. and wife Erin of Garner, NC; two brothers, Samuel Butler "Bee" Strain, Jr. and wife Martha of Shelby and Dr. Brian McCullough Strain and wife Charlotte of Roanoke, VA; his sister, Jennifer Simmons Strain "Sissy" Holcombe and husband William of Union, SC; his nephews, Captain Samuel Butler Strain, III and wife Jeni of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Alexander McCullough "Alex" Strain of Roanoke, VA; and William Eugene "Will" Holcombe, Jr. of Union, SC; his nieces, Sarah Jessee Strain of Asheville, NC, and Sarah Simmons Holcombe of Union, SC; and his great niece, May Elizabeth Strain of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00PM, Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby, NC. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. Pete Gilbert.

Active pallbearers will be Charles Holley, Milton Rachels, Lem Rachels, Justin Ledford, Travis Glover, Butler Strain, Alex Strain and Will Holcombe.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the committal service.

Mr. Earl F. Smith, age 74, widower of JoAnn Vinson Smith of 776 Fairview Church Circle, Union, passed away September 25, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Union, February 5, 1939, a son of the late Woodrow and Aileene Orr Smith.  He was a retire construction foreman and was of the Baptist faith.  Mr. Smith was a veteran of the US Air Force.

Surviving are two daughters, Tammy S. Cannon and husband Danny and Donna L. Smith all of Union; two sisters, Ann Hindman and Judy Davis both of Union; three brothers, Wayne Smith and Ken Smith both of Union and Ricky Smith of Hendersonville, NC; three grandchildren, Benji Tucker and special friends Julie Mathis, Brooke Crawford and husband Phillip and Kyle Smith and wife Brooke; six great-grandchildren, Cale Crawford, Luke Crawford, Kynlee Smith, Taegen Bishop, Aubrie Tucker and Jaelyn Davis.   Mr. Smith was predeceased by a son, Danny Smith and a granddaughter, Shannon Tucker.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, September 27, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Scott Cobb.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Smith, Clayton Smith, Nick Small, Terry Hollingsworth, Benji Tucker and Kyle Smith.  The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort: Teagan Bishop, Phillip Crawford, Kyle Crawford and Luke Crawford.

John Ellis Wells, Jr.
Taylors, SC


Mr. John Ellis Wells, Jr, age 80, husband of Lois Moss Wells of 5325 Mountain View Rd., Taylors, SC, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Wells was born in Taylors, SC August 24, 1933, a son of the late John Ellis Wells, Sr. and Eller Bayne Wells. He was a member of the Church of God in Union and was a carpenter by trade. Mr. Wells was a Veteran of the US Navy and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons: Donald Ellis Wells and wife Jean of Taylors, Ronnie Eugene Wells and wife Karen of Piedmont, Troy William Wells and wife Claire of Pickens and Charles Wayne Wells, Sr. and wife Bobbie of Taylors; five grandchildren: Lisa Goldsmith and Cindy Adams both of Lyman, Rocky Wells of Pickens, Charles Wayne Wells, Jr. and Crystal Jones both of Travelers Rest; and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Wells was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Diane Wells and a grandson, Ronald Joshua Wells.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 26, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with Military Honors.

Joel Franklin Frost, Jr.
Spartanburg, SC


Mr. Joel Franklin Frost, Jr., age 52, husband of Joan Bishop Frost, of 126 Sunrise Rd., Spartanburg, passed away, Friday, September 20, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Frost was born in Union, SC on September 19, 1961, a son of Joel Franklin Frost, Sr. of Buffalo and the late Patricia Willard Frost. He was a 1980 graduate of Union High School. Mr. Frost was employed with Costco of Spartanburg and had previously worked at Paragon Plastics in Union. He was of the Baptist Faith and an avid golfer.

Surviving in addition to his wife and father are, a sister Trevor Frost, of California; his mother-in-law, Joyce Bishop of Union; two nieces, Angel F. Wilson of Laurens and Joy Frost of Charlotte, NC; two nephews, Jacob and Jonah Bishop of Taylors. He was predeceased by a brother, Victor Frost.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Fred W. Howard, Sr.
Union, S.C.


Mr. Fred Wallace “Buddy” Howard, Sr., age 80, of 522 Toluca st., Union passed away Friday, September 20, 2013 at his home. Mr. Howard was the widower of Anita Gregory Howard.

Born in Lockhart, June 6, 1933, Mr. Howard was the son of the late Claude Wallace Howard and Mabel Roberts Howard. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and retired from the S.C. Dept. of Corrections. Mr. Howard also worked for Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean Conflict and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a member of the Al Smith Sunday School class. Mr. Howard was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy H. Lawing and husband Terry of Union; a son, Fred W. Howard, Jr. and wife Penny of Whitmire; four grandchildren, Stacy B. Lawson and husband Rev. Chad Lawson, Tori Lawing, Sarah Nicole Schrimpf and husband Andrew, and Seth Hensley and wife Stephanie; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Lawson and Elisha Schrimpf; two sisters-in-law, Deane Rector of Union and Becky Rose of Columbia; extended family members, Carol and Jeff Willis and his beloved dog, Fred. Mr. Howard was predeceased by three sisters, Helen H. Black, Ann H. Harris, and Ruth H. Greer; two brothers, Earl Howard and Ralph Howard. He was also predeceased by his special friend and companion Sara Nave.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Chad Lawson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Jean Garrett Duncan, age 78, widow of James Harold Duncan, of 204 Canterbury Rd., Union, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Duncan was born in Woodruff, September 30, 1934 a daughter of the late Tommy and Fannie Lawson Garrett.  She was a graduate of Woodruff High School and Cecil Business College. Mrs. Duncan was retired from Conso Products and had worked at the Union Church of God Day Care.  She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Tiffany Black and husband Greg; two sons, Jimmy Duncan and wife Renae and Robin Duncan and wife Angie all of Union; an adopted son, Wayne West; one sister, Nellie Wright and husband Parke of Pageland, SC; six grandchildren, Wendy Duncan, Jamie Bumgarner and husband Scottie, Casey Duncan, Deanne Smith, A.J. Duncan and Emily Ramsey and husband Robbie; five great-grandchildren, Brett Gruver, Cameron Mullinax, Cheali Bumgarner, Elizabeth Johnson and Emma Brown.

Margaret Webber Montgomery

Mrs. Margaret Webber Reardon Montgomery , age 91, of 127 Froggy Lake Rd., Union, widow of D.B. Montgomery, went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 20, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.

Mrs. Montgomery was born in York County, SC March 17, 1922, a daughter of the late Samuel Pinckney Webber, Sr and Nancy Mitchell Webber. She had attended Lockhart Schools and retired from Carolina Community Action at the age of 84. Mrs. Montgomery was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, a former choir member and a former Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Montgomery was first married to the late James Reardon, Sr.

Surviving are four sons: Bill Montgomery and wife Sandy, Jay Reardon and wife Glenda, Chuck Montgomery and friend Connie Porter all of Union and Marvin Montgomery and wife Anita of Lockhart; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Montgomery was predeceased by two sons: Barry Reardon and Phil Reardon; a sister, Lil Crick; two brothers: Jr. Webber and Howard Webber and a grandson, Chris Montgomery.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Donna Eidson and Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday evening at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Thomas Earl Lipsey
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Thomas Earl Lipsey, age 72 of 510 Forest Street, Jonesville, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Lipsey was born in Union, SC June 10, 1941, a son of the late Jess C. Lipsey and Aullion Fowler Lipsey. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and retired from Kohler Products. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a niece, Vickie Alexander who was reared in the home and numerour other nieces and nephews. Mr. Lipsey was predeceased by two sisters: Avonelle L. Rector and Joann L. Roberts and two brothers Mack Lipsey and Harold Wayne Lipsey.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, September 23, 2013 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Roger Byrd.

The family is at the home, 510 Forest Street, Jonesville where they will receive friends.

Mrs. Donna Lynn Gregory Kicidis, age 59, wife of Paul M. Kicidis, Jr., of 207 Birchwood Dr., Union, passed away September 18, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Kicidis was born in Union, January 4, 1954, a daughter of the late Ray Spencer Gregory and Betty Lawson Gregory Kirby. She was the step-daughter of the late Bill Kirby.

Mrs. Kicidis was a graduate of Union High School, the University of South Carolina-Union and received her Master’s degree from Winthrop University. She was employed with the Union Co. School District in the guidance department and had also worked in the guidance department at Spartanburg Methodist College. Mrs. Kicidis was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she had served as an Elder.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Angela Gail Kicidis and friend Brady Fuller; a son, Michael Kicidis and wife Stacy; two grandchildren, Kristin Kicidis and David Kicidis; a sister, Belinda Jenkins and husband Joe; two brothers, Johnny Gregory and wife Kim and Tim Kirby and friend Cassie Rose; her father-in-law, Paul M. Kicidis, Sr.; a niece, Ashlyn Kirby and a nephew, Wesley Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Ryan McCoy, Landon Williams, Andy Wetmore, Ronnie Green, Chuck Douglass and Chris Kicidis.

Mrs. Jean Barnett Shetley, age 83, widow of Joe Thomas Shetley, Sr., passed away September 19, 2013 at the home of her son in Chester.

Mrs. Shetley was born in Union Co., September 11, 1930, a daughter of the late Joseph H. Barnett and Lois Jett Barnett. She retired from Her Majesty and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Barnett was a member of the B.H. Tucker Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a son, Rev. Joey Shetley and wife Patti C. of Chester; grandchildren, James T. Shetley and wife Jane E. of Union and Meris S. Jenkins and husband Rev. Jonathan Jenkins of Gerton, NC; great-grandchildren, Autumn Shetley and Aiden Shetley of Union, Mackensie Jenkins and Kaleb Jenkins of Gerton, NC; a number of nieces and nephews including Wayne and Elsie Todd and Elaine and Andy Pettit.  Mrs. Shetley was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Todd and two brothers, Troy Harrill and Dick Harrill.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz, Rev. Jonathan Jenkins and Mr. James Shetley.  Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Amy Nicole Edens Beard, age 41, widow of Dale Keith Beard, Sr. of 108 Hancock St., Union, passed away Monday September 16, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Beard was born in Union, December 15, 1971, a daughter of the late Samuel and Charlene Foster Edens. She had attended Fairforest Baptist Church and was a devoted mother and homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Dale Keith “D.J” Beard, Jr. of the home; a brother, Samuel “Sammy” Edens, Jr.; an aunt, Evonne F. Stephens; her maternal grandfather, Charles Foster; a nephew, Eric Edens; two cousins, Scott Varner and Michael Varner all of Union; a step-daughter, Julie Beard; a step-son, Josh Beard both of Woodruff; special friends, Crystal Anders and Tim Richards; and D.J.’s aid, April Keisler.

A memorial services will be scheduled for a later date.

The family will be at the home, 108 Hancock St., Union.

Ophelia Adams Albritton passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Born February 6, 1919 in Red Level, Alabama, she was the youngest daughter of the late Benjamin and Emily Connell Adams. Mrs. Albritton attended the University of Alabama where she majored in Textile and Clothing Design. She married the late Marvin Albritton in 1941, and following her husband’s graduation from law school, she returned to Andalusia where she remained a vital force in her community and church. She used her artistry and vision to enhance numerous areas of public life, and these abilities can be seen in the steeple and porte-cochere of the First Presbyterian Church in Andalusia. A devoted wife, mother and faithful friend, Mrs. Albritton was a true lady, and her grace, kindness, and gentility touched all of those with whom she was acquainted.

The funeral services will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Andalusia, Alabama at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at Andalusia Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be in the church sanctuary from 10 to 10:30 AM prior to the services on Saturday.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Kenneth and Emily (Albritton) Hill of Union, South Carolina; her granddaughter and husband, MAJ Christopher and Alice (Hill) Haas of Harker Heights, Texas; and a grandson, Benjamin C. Hill of Charleston, South Carolina.

Mrs. Maudine Wilder “Dean” Hickman, age 81, wife of Lonnie C. Hickman of 1084 Cedar Grove Rd., Jonesville, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.

Mrs. Hickman was born in Lawrenceville, GA October 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Charles Sanford Wilder, Sr., and Gertrude Montgomery Wilder. She had attended North Georgia College and retired as Office Manager of Cardio-Pulmonary Associates. Mrs. Hickman had also previously worked for other medical offices in Spartanburg. She was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church where she was a member of United Methodist Women; a member of the DAR Fairforest Chapter, the UDC Hames Chapter and was an avid reader. Mrs Hickman was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs.Hickman was predeceased by her eldest son, Richard Lonnie Hickman.

Surviving in addition to her husband Lonnie are three daughters: Janice Hickman Helms and husband David of Swansea, SC, Barbara H. Evans of Leesville and Rebecca Hickman McCraw and husband Henry Robert McCraw, Sr. of Gaffney; a son, Thomas Carlyle Hickman and wife Deirdre of Hollis, New Hampshire; a sister, Erma Wilder Johnson; a brother, Charles Sanford Wilder, Jr and wife Shirley all of Lawrenceville, GA; eight grandchildren: Wilder Hickman, Langdon Hickman, Deana Black, Hillary Webber, Sara Hilley, Jessica Baker, John Davis and Jennifer Summey; seven step-grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Don Alexander. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

 Mrs. Nadean Holcombe Vinson, age 88, widow of Joseph Fred Vinson, formerly of Mt. Tabor Church Rd., passed away, Wednesday, September 11, 2013.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Union, August 15, 1925 a daughter of the late Marvin Boyd Holcombe and Mamie Mauk Holcombe. She attended Kelly Pinckney High School and was  formerly employed with Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant.  Mrs. Vinson was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where she was a member of the Joy Club.  She attended Southside Baptist Church while she was a resident of Spartanburg.

Surviving are a son, Gene Vinson and wife Rita of Inman; a grandson, Larry Vinson and wife Donna of Spartanburg; a brother, W. Hope Holcombe and wife Carrie of Jonesville; three great-grandchildren, Cameren Vinson, Chase Vinson and Chloe Vinson; several nieces and nephews including Margie Hall and husband Walter of Spartanburg.  Mrs. Vinson was predeceased by a sister, Vivian Farr and a brother, Gordon Harold Holcombe.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 13, 2013 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Gideon M. Long, Jr. (Veteran)

Gideon M. Long, Jr., of Spartanburg, died on September 10, 2013. He was 85 years old. Patriarch of the Long family, Reverend Long impacted countless lives as a pastor and friend. Having lived a rich and full life, Gideon will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was born in Greenville County of South Carolina to Gideon Madison Long (Monyo), Sr. and Ruby Lee Hooker. He attended Columbia High School. He was a graduate of Bob Jones University and earned graduate degrees from Southwestern Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina in 1951. He served as Corporal in the South Carolina Air National Guard in the 157th Fighter Squadron.

Pastor Emeritus of Philadelphia Baptist Church, he also served as Pastor of First Baptist Church, Lyman, South Carolina for 21 years. In addition, he was Pastor at Cudd Memorial Baptist Church in Spartanburg and Parkview Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, Florida. Having retired in 1993, Rev. Long never left the ministry, as he continued service as Interim Pastor at many churches.

Rev. Long's greatest treasure was his family. He was married to the late Lois Cherry of Dothan, Alabama for 52 wonderful years. They had four children and six grandchildren. Children are: Cherry Garasi (Michael), David Long (Rachelle), Mark Long (Leigh), and Carol Hall. Grandchildren are: Michael Tadlock (Amanda), Katie Long Brantley (Rick), Melissa Tadlock, Daniel Hall (Sarah), Madison Hall, and Helen-Grace Hall. Rev. Long married Betty Hooker of Spartanburg in 2009. Step children are Allen Hooker (Vickie), Robert Hooker (Anna Jane), and David Hooker (Elaine), and Betty’s grandchildren: Matt, Blythe, Whitney, Benjamin, Abbey and Samuel.  Rev. Long has one brother, Daniel Long of Gainesville, Florida.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Pauline, conducted by Rev. George Jones and Rev. Eddie Cooper. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors after the service at the church. Pallbearers will be grandsons, sons-in-law, and step sons. The family is at the home.

Mrs. Melinda Freeman Robinson, age 49, wife of Marty Robinson, of 455 Deepwater Road, Union, passed away suddenly Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Robinson was born in Union on November 18, 1963 a daughter of Alex “Buddy” and Shirley Joyce Lawson Freeman. She was a 1982 graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Robinson received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and received her Master’s of Education from Converse College. She was employed by the Union County School System for the past 24 years, she was currently a third grade teacher at Buffalo Elementary School where she had taught for the past 17 years. Mrs. Robinson was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. She was an avid volunteer with Union County Relay for Life- American Cancer Society.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Marah Alexis Robinson and a son, Jacob Anthony Robinson, both of the home; in-laws, Alvin and Sylvia Robinson of Union.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM, Friday, September 13, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon.

Mr. George Edward “Eddie” Simmons, Jr., age 69, husband of Betty Jo Johnson Simmons, of 142 Fairforest Heights, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mr. Simmons was born in Union, SC on April 6, 1944 a son of the late George Edward Simmons, Sr. and Daisy O’Shields Simmons Maness. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Torrington Company, Tyger River Plant. Mr. Simmons was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. He played on the first Dixie Youth District 2 Championship Baseball team, as well as numerous baseball and softball teams throughout his life.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Dawn S. Fallaw and husband John of Union; a brother, Tommy Simmons and wife Suzette of Prosperity; two grandsons, John Simmons Fallaw and Grayson Edward Fallaw. Mr. Simmons was predeceased by his step-father Loyd Maness.

Mrs. Mildred Louise Farr, age 87, of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mrs. Farr was born in the Monarch community of Union, June 13, 1926, a daughter of the late Jake and Madru McKeown Wynn.  She retired from Torrington Co. and had previously worked of Milliken Co., Monarch Plant.  Mrs. Farr was a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a grandson, Richard Farr and wife Vanessa of Union; a granddaughter, Fran Greene of Taylors; three great-grandchildren, Herman Farr, Kayla Farr and Chelsey Farr; three great-great-grandchildren, Jonathan Gossett, Taylan Tucker and Amiya Farr; and  special cousins, Marian English and James Austin. Mrs. Farr was predeceased by a son, Phillip Eugene Farr.

Hydrick L. “Jack” Kirby
Hendersonville, N.C.


Hydrick L. “Jack” Kirby, 92, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Mr. Kirby was born in Union on Dec. 13, 1920, a son of the late Hydrick L. Kirby, Sr., and Virginia B. Kirby. He was a 1939 graduate of Union High School, attended Clemson College and graduated from Presbyterian College. He participated in the ROTC program at both colleges and was a member of the Precision Marching Drill Team at Clemson. He worked at Kohler Company in Spartanburg for 16 years before transferring to Kohler’s Brownwood, Texas, plant. He worked there for three years before joining Eljer Plumbing Ware in Tupelo, MS as a staff member for six years. Mr. Kirby retired to Hendersonville, N.C., in April of 1986. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville where he was an ordained deacon.

During World War II, Mr. Kirby served in the First Infantry Division-also known as the Big Red One- in Europe. He was Rifle Squad Leader and was awarded the Purple Heart three times.

Survivors include his wife of 34 ½ years, Jane Fullbright Whisnant Kirby; two stepsons, Greg Whisnant of Columbia, Md., and Jeffrey Whisnant and his wife, Lisa, of Seneca; four step-grandchildren: Byron Whisnant and his wife, Jocelyn of Texas and Evan, Jared and Aubrey Whisnant, all of Seneca; and one step-great- grandson, Septon Whisnant of Texas. Mr. Kirby was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Frances Adams Kirby; his parents; a sister, Marguerite K. Bradley and a brother, Harold W. Kirby, all of Union.

Mrs. Rachel Reeder Lawson, age 78, widow of William “Cotton” Lawson, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013. Mrs. Lawson was first married to the late Bobby Brooks, who was killed in action in the Korean Conflict.

Born in Union, November 11, 1934, Mrs. Lawson was the beloved only child of the late Robert Samuel Reeder and Sara Johns Reeder. She was a proud member of the class of 1952 and treasured each reunion with her friends. Mrs. Lawson loved being a legal secretary and spent many years with the Long-Whitney Law Firm.

Mrs. Lawson was a dedicated Christian who faithfully served Mon Aetna Baptist Church and Philippi Baptist Church. Proverbs 3:5-6 were her life verses and she lived them for all to see.

She met every one with a smile, had an infectious laugh, and sacrificially gave of herself, time, talents and money to all. Once you met her you were family, and you were never the same.

Surviving are a son, William “Ricky” Lawson and wife Susan; two daughters, Roslyn Kingsmore and husband Jimmy, and Robin Owensby and husband Ron all of Union; three grandchildren: Rev. Steven Robert Owensby and wife Caroline of Enoree, William Reeder Owensby and wife Brandi, and Richard Lynn Owensby all of Columbia; and four great-grandchildren, Robert, Rachel, Roslyn and Rebekah Owensby all of Enoree.

Ms. Carol Wilson Millwood, age 75, of 118 Highland Drive, Union, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013 at her home.

Ms. Millwood was born in Union, SC on April 21, 1938, a daughter of the late Bruce O. and Sarah Louise Blain Wilson. She was a 1955 graduate of Union High School. Ms. Millwood was retired as manager of Revco Drugs and had previously worked as manager of the Glamour Shop. Recently she had worked alongside her sons at The Café in Jonesville. Mrs. Millwood was a member of Greater Union Church.

Surviving are a two daughters, Dawn M. Lee of Charlotte, NC and Tammy M. Moore and husband Mike of Union; two sons, Todd Millwood and Hank Millwood and special friend Petie all of Spartanburg; two sisters, Anice W. Clark of Suffolk, VA and Linda Coleman and Tad of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Sarah Lee, Charles Lee of Mint Hill, NC, Michael Moore and special friend Alex, and Blaine Moore and wife Danielle all of Spartanburg, SC; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. O’Dell was born in Union, SC on November 13, 1930 a son of the late Walter and Kate Lackey O’Dell. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from Broad River Electric as a service technician. Mr. O’Dell was a veteran of the US Army - Signal Corp during the Korean Conflict. He was a faithful member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted. Mr. O’Dell was a Mason with Lockhart Lodge #244 and was a Shriner.

Mrs. Eva Randall Harris, age 87 of 113 Jefferies Street, Union, widow of Joseph Moody Harris, Jr., passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Harris was born in Union, SC June 21, 1926, a daughter of the late John Stanley Randall and Cora Lee Randall. She had attended Union County Schools and retired from Milliken & Co - Monarch Plant after 48 years of service. Mrs. Harris was a member of McCutcheon Presbyterian Church where she served as President of the Presbyterian Women of the Church.

Surviving are three daughters: Glenda H. Adams, Rita H. Canupp and husband Landy, and Debra H. Cannon and husband Lindsey; a son, Joseph Marion Harris; a son-in-law, Graham A. Mrs. Marguerite Lawson “Mama Rea” Burgess, age 84, widow of Horace Manuel “Pee-Wee” Burgess of 3032 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, September 2, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Burgess was born in Union, July 11, 1929, a daughter of the late Sam and Nora West Lawson. She was retired from Spartan Foods and was a member of Putman Baptist Church. Mrs. Burgess was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first in her life.

Mrs. Burgess was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter Annett Ketz and husband Tony of Inman; two sons, Terry Burgess and wife Margie and Jerry Burgess and wife Joyce all of Buffalo; 5 grandchildren and spouses, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and spouses, 12 step-great grandchildren, 1 step-great-great grandchild and one adopted grandson. Mrs. Burgess was predeceased by a granddaughter, Debbie Revis Betenbaugh and a brother, Marion Lawson.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rick Henderson and Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Gene Revis, Maxx Revis, Daniel Revis, Dylan Lawson, Billy Burgess, Terry Burgess, III, Cody Greer and Josh Lydia.

The following are asked to assemble at the church 2:45 PM Thursday to form the honorary escort, Marshall O’Shields, Bruce Lawson, Mike Ivey, Donald Babb, Russ Ratliff, and William Mosley.

Mrs. Burgess will be carried to the home of her son, Jerry and Joyce Burgess, 3022 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Mary Bailey Langley Arthur, age 82, of 508 East Main Street, widow of E. John Arthur, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Arthur was born in Union, SC on July 27, 1931 a daughter of the late E.E. and Mary Ruth Bailey Langley. She was a graduate of Union High School and Winthrop College where received a degree in Early Childhood Education. Mrs. Arthur was retired after 30 years from Union County Schools, Excelsior Elementary School, where she taught Kindergarten and 1st grade. Mrs. Arthur was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where she had sung in the choir. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Sigma Chapter, the Union Lions Club and the Union Cotillion Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Lucille Cody and husband Robert with whom she made her home; a son, Ned Arthur and wife Pam of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Ellis Langley and wife Peggy of Union; two sisters, Ann Rollins of Abbotstown, PA and Erma Lee Hunt and husband Dan of Winston Salem, NC; two grandchildren, Lauralee Jolly and husband Lee and Adair Craig and husband Brett; three great-grandchildren, Robert Lewis Jolly, Thomas Arthur Jolly, and Lilee Beth Jolly; her nieces and nephews, Dennis Langley and wife Cindy, Donna Anthony and husband Tommy, David Langley and wife Mary Beth, Leanna Dixon and husband John, Danny Hunt, Beth Groden and husband Mike, Kathy Rollins, and Kim Kamens and husband Adam; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Bauknight. Burial will follow at Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Langley, David Langley, Ty Anthony, Andy Nelson, Danny Hunt, and Tommy Anthony.

Visitation will be held 6:00PM until 8:00PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Pauline Fowler Turner
Jonesville, SC


Mrs. Pauline Fowler Turner, age 100, widow of J.D. Turner, Sr, formerly of Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Turner was born in Union County, SC November 19, 1912, a daughter of the late Herbert Fowler, Sr and Mary Dessie Horne Fowler. She attended Jonesville Area Schools and retired from JP Stevens Jonesville Plant. Mrs. Turner was a life time member of Gilead Baptist Church . She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. “Mama Turner” was not only a Mother to her children, but to all of her family and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are two daughters: Lula Mae “Toots” Burgess and Brenda T. Brown both of Jonesville; two sisters: Alice F. Harris of Union and Mamie F. Addis of Jonesville; nine grandchildren; 17great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by a son, J.D. Turner, Jr, a daughter, Helen Howell, three sisters, Nellie Fowler, Ruth “Piney” Knox and Daisy Belle Buice; a twin brother, Eugene “Buck” Fowler and four other brothers, Jennings “Jim” Fowler, Herbert “Herb” Fowler, Jr, Nathaniel Fowler and Hoyt Earl “Tom’ Fowler; a daughter-in-law, Pat Farr Turner; three sons-in-law, David Brown, Wade Howell and Larkin Burgess; a granddaughter Paula Howell Heatherly and a great-grandson Matthew Brent Addis.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 3, 201 at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Eddie Saxon. Burial will follow in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Burgess, Blaine Addis, Ray Burgess, Charles David Brown, Harold Fowler, and Kevin Garner.

Visitation will be held 6:30 until 8:30 Monday evening at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel.
