Anne Ayers Hames

Anne Ayers Hames, age 97, of Union, SC, passed away on March 12, 2022, of natural causes in her home. She was born on December 18, 1924, in Toccoa, GA, to Annette Brice Ayers and William Parker Ayers. She grew up in Carnesville, GA, and graduated from Franklin County High School in 1941. She attended Tift College in Forsythe, GA, and graduated in 1945 with a BA in Science with an emphasis in chemistry. She earned a master's degree in education from the University of North Carolina in 1946. She worked as a chemist for DuPont in Sylacauga, AL, and then in East Chicago, IN. She transferred to the DuPont nylon plant in Chattanooga, TN, and met her future husband, Dr. Boyd L Hames, a resident at Erlanger Hospital. They were married on March 22, 1952, and moved to Union, SC.

Anne was active in the Women's Circle of Hope and the Altar Guild at Grace United Methodist Church. She was a founding member of the Union Cotillion Club and the Friends of the Library, and a sustaining member of the Junior Charity League of Union County. She was a member of several bridge and book clubs. She also served as a volunteer at Wallace Thompson Hospital and at the Union County Mental Health Association.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband Boyd, a brother, William Brice Ayers, a sister, Dr. Sara Ayers Bagby, and one grandson, William Walter Hames III. She is survived by her four children, Walter (Jan) of Austin, TX; Joe (Anne) of McKenzie, TN; Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC; and Charles (Margaret) of South Orange, NJ; six grandchildren, Charles Wesley Hames, Rebecca Hames (Wayne Mitchell), Kate Cummings (Corey), Virginia Zasadny (Sam), Holland Hames (Meenjung Shin), and Julia Hames; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family is grateful for the staff and caregivers of Comfort Keepers and Compassus Hospice, who cared for her with affection. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S Church St, Union, SC 29379, the Friends of the Library, 300 E. South St, Union, SC 29379, or the Union County Historical Society, 127 W Main St, Union, SC 29379.

A service of death and resurrection will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 22, at Grace United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Lee Phillips. Burial will precede the service at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville, SC.
