December 24, 2016 Miss Barbara Jean Hughes, age 84 of 107 W. South St., Union, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Heartland of Union. Miss Hughes was born in Union, April 7, 1932, a daughter of the late Everett Holmes Hughes and Jean Sanders Hughes. She was a graduate of Union High School and received a bachelor's degree from Furman University. Miss Hughes was owner and operator of West Main Laundry and had also worked at the USC-Union Child Development Center. She was an active lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she assisted in the Nursery Dept. as long as her health permitted. Miss Hughes was a member of the D.A.R., a sustaining member of the Union Co. Junior Charity League and an avid supporter of Meals on Wheels. Surviving are a brother, Douglas H. Hughes and wife Carol of Union; several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Kim Blackwell and husband Lynn of Jonesville and Jessica Justice and husband Nathan of Union; and many dear friends including her neighbor Kathy Stepp. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 26, 2016 at the First Baptist Church Chapel conducted by Rev. Ron Davis and Rev. Ralph Brown. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Lynn Blackwell, Peyton Blackwell, Jack Kelly, William Holcombe, Jim Stepp and Tommy Genoble. Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00PM Monday at the church chapel prior to the services. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff and nurses of Heartland of Union, caregiver Sarah Plemmons, Dr. David Keith and Dr. Lance Miller for their care and concern of Miss Hughes during her illness.
