Union, SC

Betty Vinson Stokes, 88, of 111 Churchill St, Union, was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on Thursday, December 28th, 2023 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.  The last surviving member of her immediate family and the youngest of eight children, Betty was born on August 18th, 1935 to the late Daniel Clarence and Emma Price Vinson and grew up in Whitmire, SC.  She married the late Billy Stokes on October 20th, 1950 where they shared 34 years of marriage prior to his passing.

Known as Mama, Nanny, and PaPaw to those she loved, Betty cherished her family and raised her children on the family land in Tuckertown of lower Union County.  Tuckertown represents family and Betty ensured that generation after generation could enjoy the family land. She loved nothing more than seeing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren happy and she never shied away from telling you how proud she was of you or giving solicited or unsolicited advice.

Betty retired from Cone Mills after numerous years of service and went on to be the sole caregiver of her mother-in-law for many, many years.  She was of the Baptist faith, most recently a member at Fairforest Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Terrie Malone of the home, and sons Thomas Stokes (Robin) of Newberry, and Chris Stokes (Pam) of Union.  Betty is also survived by grandchildren Lee Chastain (Mandy) of Pauline and Tom Stokes (Pam), Joseph Chastain, Kacie Ashmore (Robert), Jenny Stokes, Zach Stokes, and Isaiah Stokes all of Union, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by 3 brothers, Clifford, Carl, and Donald Vinson and 4 sisters, Alice Cheathem Stanley, Nellie Thompson, Dora Lane and Louise Moss, one granddaughter, Cynthia Chastain, and a son-in-law, Danny Malone, and her father and mother-in law, Aughtry and Sarah Stokes.

Services will be held on Sunday, December 31st at 2:00 at Holcombe Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.  Burial will follow in the family plot Kelly's Chapel Cemetery in Carlisle, SC.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons Lee, Jameson, Tyler, Drew, and Johnathan Chastain and Tom, Zach, and Isaiah Stokes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of one's choice.

The family will be at the home.

Hebrews 13:5 "Let your conversations be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have; for he hath said, I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE, NOR FORSAKE THEE."
