Mr. Carl Hennis Lewis, age 90 of 114 Boyd Street (Monarch Community), Union, SC, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at his home after an extended illness. Mr. Lewis was the widower of Sara Eaves Lewis. Mr. Lewis was born in Woodruff, SC December 7, 1925, a son of the late Carl R. Lewis and Pearl Wells Lewis. He retired from Torrington Company, Tyger River Plant after twenty-three years of service and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mr. Lewis was a Veteran of the US Army Paratroopers having served with the 13th and 82nd Airborne Divisions during World War II in France. He was a member and had served as Chaplain of the VFW Post 3122 and a member and Chaplain of Torrington Retirees Group. Mr. Lewis was a founding member of the Monarch Fire Department where he had served as Assistant Fire Chief and EMT with Gregory and Johnson Ambulance Service. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol serving as Captain and participating in several rescue missions and was a member of the Union County Airport Commission. Mr. Lewis was an avid photographer. Surviving are two daughters: Gail Lewis Betenbaugh and Carol Lewis Hughes (Doug) all of Union; grandchildren: Dena M. Palmer (Brian Lancaster) reared in the home of Buffalo, Richard L. Betenbaugh (Dorothy) of Union, Christopher M. Betenbaugh (Kelly) of Jonesville and Wendy B. Childers (Tommy Hart) of Union; great-grandchildren: Jessica Justice (Nathan), Luke Childers, Charlie Betenbaugh, Gavin Betenbaugh, Haleigh Palmer, Nicholas Palmer, Sara Hart and Emma Hart; great-great-grandchildren: Rosalie Justice, Nathan Justice; numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Lewis is also survived by a brother, Ralph E. Lewis of Columbia; a sister, Reba L. Gambrell of Rock Hill; a sister-in-law, Mamie Bailey (Dwight) of Simpsonville; and a brother-in-law, Bobby Eaves (Faye) of Greer, SC. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Lewis, brothers, James Lewis, William Lewis, Thomas Lewis, Donald Lewis and a son-in-law, Charlie Betenbaugh, Jr. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Larry Plyler and Mr. Torance Inman. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The Honor Guard of Union County Fire Fighters Association will serve as the active pallbearers. The following are asked to sit in a group: Torrington Retirees, past and present member of Monarch Fire Department, Julia Adams, Missie Mullinax, Elaine Robertson, Myria Cogdill and Jerry Robertson.
