Carlton Ray Chastain

Mr. Carlton Ray Chastain, age 89, husband Mary Jane Hopkins Chastain, of 543 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Friday, June 20, 2025, at his home.

Mr. Chastain was born December 24, 1935, in Ninety-Six, SC, a son of the late William Carlos Chastain and Ethel Dills Chastain.  He and his family moved to Cleveland, GA in 1938 and in 1950 moved to Union.  Mr. Chastain retired from Torrington & Co. and had formerly worked at Milliken & Co—Monarch Plant.  He was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church until his health declined, he had served as a Deacon and helping wherever he could.   Mr. Chastain loved building, gardening, farming, and helping other people.  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 68 years are three children, Sandra Chastain Brasington, Jimmy Ray Chastain and wife Debbie, and Lisa Chastain Martin and husband William (Shoney); five grandchildren, Melissa Brasington Cardwell and husband Eric, Kathleen Chastain Scott and husband Robert, Brandon Chastain and wife Lauren, Sara Marie Chastain Gregory and husband Brian, and Carlee Crawford, eleven great-grandchildren, Mallori and Molli Cardwell, Ryan, Sadie, Jase, and Joanna Scott, Chloe and Charyle Chastain, and Cayla, Hannah, and Peyton Gregory, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brothers, Vick T. Chastain, Willard Chastain, Arlin Chastain, and Vernon Chastain; two sisters, Mavor (Susie) Sosebee and an infant sister; and a son-in-law, Robert Bruce Brasington.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, June 23, 2025, at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Scott.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Sosebee, Mike Chastain, Brandon Chastain, Ricky Chastain, Ryan Scott, and Wayne Chastain.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the church.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the love, kindness and care given to Mr. Chastain, given by Teresa Glenn and Melissa Harger.

Father, throughout my life you've been a friend, a helping hand through thick and thin, and though at times I've been a bother, a guiding light has been my Father.

Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Rd., Union, SC 29379.
