Mrs. Carolyn Cook Alexander, age 99, formerly of 107 Churchill Street, Union, passed away, Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Eden Terrace Senior Living in Spartanburg.
Mrs. Alexander was born September 7, 1926, to parents James Rosemond Cook and Nelle Cooksey Cook in Gaffney, SC. She was a graduate of Gaffney High School and earned a degree in Childhood Education from Limestone College in 1946.
Carolyn married Henry Galt Alexander on September 30, 1950 and the pair resided in Gaffney prior to moving to Union, SC, where they would raise their family. Mrs. Alexander worked as a teacher before becoming a school librarian retiring from Buffalo Elementary School in Buffalo, SC. Her love of books and education was passed down to generations of students she taught, including all three of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Alexander was a 50+ year member of the Fairforest Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as an active member of Grace Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She also volunteered at Wallace Thomson Hospital for many years. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed participating in her book club with her friends. Carolyn loved to travel with family and friends, especially on the family’s annual beach trip to Garden City for many summers. Her family could always count on Gran to have a puzzle waiting to be worked, a frappe in the freezer and a bowl of chocolates by the door to be shared.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Gene Palmer & her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Shirley Cook. She is survived by her three children, Sally Palmer, Chip Alexander (Kim), and Charlie Alexander (Deb) as well as grandchildren Neely Swygert (Barrett), Thad Palmer (Lacey), Christina Cunningham (Matt), Caroline Colbert (Zach) and Galt Alexander and great-grandchildren, Sawyer Cunningham, Landyn Cunningham and Lila Jean Palmer.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Grace Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Nels Ledwell. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the Church Fellowship Hall.
